’ve gotten to the point in my life where it’s easier to look back than look forward. You don’t have to be a life insurance salesperson to know what the actuarial tables contain. A person tends to dwell on regrets at this stage of life. Total up the mistakes and think “what if? I guess I’m lucky because, like the song says, “Regrets I have Tom Cardella a few, but then again too few to mention. I struck gold on the biggest decision most people face in life. With whom to spend your life. There’s a reason I hit the jackpot. Her name is Fran. I’ve spent 52 of my 78 years with Fran. The way things are today, marriages tend to have the shelf life of fresh fruit and vegetables. You tell folks you’re married 52 years and they look at you as if you were astronauts just back from visiting Mars. I don’t know how many times we’ve been asked what our secret is. And with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, slow thinker that I am, I just figured out a quick answer — Fran. This is not me being overly humble, humility never being my strong suit. It’s just being factual in an age where, heaven

was a Wing Bowl virgin on Friday morning, but I had done my homework. I had steeled myself against prejudice. I had read all the bareknuckled takedowns, the love-it-or-leave-it defense blogs, and the vicey essays about Philadelphia’s most famous day of bacchanalia — I was convinced

But it turns out I didn’t need one. The cavalcade of strippers and diehard wing fans bored me. It felt campy, oversaturated. The throngs of blotto dudes egging women to show their breasts at 5 in the morning — you took a Friday off for this? So be it. Not my scene. And so from the press corral on the floor of the Wells Fargo Center, like anyone

who’s ever been bored at a party, I started fixating on the least interesting thing about the softcore mess that is Wing Bowl. Who’s gonna clean it up? I caught a couple of stagehands joking about some milky barf splatter on the hockey glass nearby. “Damn, who the hell threw up on the glass there? one guy said, joining the others in ASS E7<5 0=E: ^OUS ,,

5`O\bW\U O TOW` abO`b To the Editor: Ms. Endres talks about the pro-choice advocates and the Women’s March (“Meaningful March, Jan. 26), citing the supposed women who might have wanted to march for equal rights could have marched in the March for Life in Washington, D.C., but didn’t because they were never born. What strikes me about the anti-choice movement, is that so many of them have such concern for the unborn, yet make life so tenuous for children once they are born. From cuts to wellness programs for children, as well as prenatal care, to cuts to pre-school and other education programs, even after school programs, that can be

game changers for children. It seems the anti-choice only care about the unborn when they are unborn, once the children are born, all bets are off. If they are born into poor families, it’s almost as if the attitude is, it’s their fault for being born to poor parents. Why should the government pay for health care, preschool, etc.? Furthermore, they focus solely on abortion, ignoring the fact that many women, such as myself when I was younger and had no health insurance, depended on Planned Parenthood for free pap tests and breast exams. They also want to make it more difficult for women to obtain contraceptives. I fail to understand why people think they

What are thoughts on the outcome of Super Bowl LI? 7\bS`dWSea Pg 8]aS^V ;gS`a >V]b]a Pg BW\O 5O`QSOc

“I believe that (New England’s) Tom Brady further proved that he’s the best quarterback ever. He was so cool under pressure, as if it were just another game. Michael Martino, 1500 block of Moore Street

have the right to impose their religious beliefs about birth control on people of other faiths. Yes, a lot of pro-choice people, men and women, are people of faith. If you don’t believe in abortions, don’t have one. If you don’t believe in birth control, don’t use it, but MYOB, and stop being so inconsistent and hypocritical. I believe in access to safe and legal abortion. I also believe in wellness health care for children once they are born, funding for early childhood education, free lunches in school, access to quality education, after school programs, and other programs that give BORN children a fair start in life. Rachel Garber South Philadelphia

Continued funding needed To the Editor: Planned Parenthood is the largest performers of abortion in The USA. It performed 328,000 last year. They also provided 10.6 million other services. 35 percent STD testing and treatment, 35 percent contraception services, 17 percent Cancer screening,10 percent other women’s health services and 3 percent abortion services. If the Federal Government defunds Planned Parenthood, individual states would pick up the bill. I am Pro-choice. I voted for Hillary Clinton. To take away these services for women with no other option is foolish. Less access to these services would have dire consequences to women whose care depends on Planned Parenthood. Michael Oscapinski South Philadelphia

“The second half was great. To my friends, I’m going to make this short and sweet, I told you so. Tom Brady was amazing in the clutch. Andre House, 2300 block of Morris Street

NEIGHBORHOOD

WING BOWL continued from page 1 laughs. “I ain’t cleanin’ that up. In between rounds of competitive eating, I would watch the building services guys — the ones with the solemn faces, rubber gloves, and industrial trash bags — do the dirty work. But the mess on stage is only a smudge of stadium-wide barf festival. The Wells Fargo Center staff tasked with mopping up all the spilled Miller Lite and regurgitated chicken parts and Fireballscented vomit are not permitted to talk the press, they said. But this is Wing Bowl, where the rules are made to be broken. “It’s worse than any of the sports games or concerts, man, Kurt, a veteran building services worker whose name is definitely not Kurt but who I am also not trying to get in trouble with his employer, said. How many times has Kurt cleaned up puke since the parking lot opened to tailgaters at 4 a.m.? “I can’t even ... count, he said. “Dozens. In the last few hours, Kurt said he had personally broken up or called security on five fistfights. He had also summoned ambulances. He had watched medics put tubes up the noses of grown men to pump their stomachs. I looked at my watch; it was only 8:45 a.m. Meanwhile, back in the pit, another longtime Wells Fargo maintenance worker (and South Philly native, I should add) shrugged at the turnout this year. He remembers10 years ago when there wasn’t an empty seat in the house at Wing Bowl. “I think people are just getting tired of seeing the same old thing, he said. “Every year it’s the same guys eating chicken wings, the same girls from the same clubs. Indeed, there were many diehard Wing Bowl fans in the audience this year. I wish I could say the drunkenness and the fighting were isolated incidents. Regrettably, the Wells Fargo Center doesn’t keep stats on this stuff. But even without looking for it, it’s impossible not to notice the frequency of throwing up and the throwing down among Wing Bowlers. Even Angelo Cataldi, WIP’s longtime sports-radio personality and Wing Bowl creator, has conceded that the event has skewed far from its original vision, and that people who think it’s trash “have a point.

“Even we have grave misgivings about it, Cataldi told Philadelphia magazine last year. “What it is now wasn’t the plan that we designed 24 years ago. Meanwhile, there have been mixed reports about Cataldi’s retirement and the consequent end of Wing Bowl. Were Wing Bowl to vanish, how much would it be missed? I can safely say that building service worker won’t be shedding any tears. “They said this will be the last Wing Bowl, Kurt said hopefully. “But who knows? They said that last year, too. A>@

D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 knows, facts are in short supply. A friend even urged me to write about our 52 years of marriage. Hence the column. Most of you who bother to read this column every week know that Fran donated a kidney to me almost eight years ago, right around our wedding anniversary. Kind of an expensive gift, don’t you think? Not a gift I could repay with a greeting card and a nice dinner at The Prime Rib, though she would think so. She kiddingly tells folks that she just expects a blue box from Tiffany’s every year in return, but if truth be told, she’d have done it if I did nothing at all but get my health back. And I did. You also likely know that she helped comfort me during my recovery from colon cancer about a year and a half ago. Sat by me during my chemo, pretending she wasn’t as scared as I that I might be wasting her gift of a perfectly good kidney because I’d gotten sick again. What you don’t know is how all this got started. I met Fran at the Department of Public Assistance (folks called it “the welfare office” back then). It was in March 1961. The offices were located at the corner of Broad Street and Oregon Avenue where a public school now sits. She was working as an administrative assistant — she says I like to use fancy titles and prefers the title “clerk” to describe what she was doing. I had just gotten out of the Air Force Reserve, an unemployed radio broadcaster who, out of desperation, had just accepted a job as a caseworker. I noticed her right away. How could you not, her being by far the sharpest girl I’d ever seen (the word “hot” was not yet in our vocabulary, but you get the idea). Being the suave and confident person that I am, it took me three months to ask her for a date. And I needed the urging of a cou-

N southphillyreview.com

ple of buddies at the office to work up the nerve. In fact, one day at lunch, one of the guys said to me that if I didn’t ask Franny “Scratch-a-belly” ( her name was Scroccarelli) for a date, he would. Fran will tell you that her sole reason for marrying me was to shorten her surname. Fran’s folks had a place in Wildwood near the Crest, so we agreed to meet one weekend in July on the beach at Bennett Avenue. She showed up with a girlfriend. I was deeply disappointed. Even I knew three’s a crowd. But she agreed to a date that night sans girlfriend. She wore this knockout form-fitting print dress — I saw a figurative flashing sign that read, “Buddy, you’re out of your league.” The night began a bit inauspiciously when we were walking (didn’t drive then or now) on our way to Dom’s Italian Restaurant, and a rain shower forced us to duck into a laundromat to avoid getting soaked. There are more romantic places than a laundromat. Luckily, the shower ended quickly or this might be a far different column. We went to a nightclub called Hurricane East where the great Brook Benton was appearing, and then to the Riptide for a drink. I knew the bartender. He had newfound respect for when he got a look at my date. The night was nearly over. We were saying “goodnight” in the yard of the R and T Apartments — her parents’ place. A light mist was falling. In those days, it wasn’t a question of whether you’d get invited upstairs, just whether you would get a goodnight kiss on that first date. The headlights of the passing cars showed the rain getting heavier. I looked into her beautiful, dark eyes — eyes like black diamonds. It was now or never, and I leaned forward. Our lips met. And the mist turned into magic dust. Leonard Cohen once wrote “…There were many loves before us. I know that we are not new…” But all lovers believe they are new. Unique. Forever. And in our case, I still believe it. A>@

ane Savadove has long loved celebrating the merits of cerebral texts, contending that “We should not apologize for our brains. Through his 26-year affiliation with EgoPo Classic Theater, he has looked to offer such powerful pages with zero pretension, with the entity’s festival-heavy identity assisting in that venture. The 49-yearold has finally realized a decade-long pursuit by helming “Seagull, a symbolist take on Anton Chekhov’s “The Seagull, the first full-length play in the beloved scribe’s canon. “He’s such a titan in the field, the East Passyunk Crossing resident said of the playwright whose 1895-penned piece is the second element of EgoPo’s Russian Masters Festival. “No matter what setbacks we have, we’ll always want to feel life on our skin again. Chekhov is great at helping us to do that because he writes so viscerally. As the Center City-headquartered company’s artistic director, Savadove cherishes choosing which works will encourage the firing of synapses among audiences. With “Seagull, which is running through Feb. 19 at the Latvian Society Theater, he has called upon many brain cells to give kudos to Chekhov’s vast awareness of humanity’s depth.

“I feel I’ve put everything that I can into it, the overseer said of the project, to which he devoted one year of consideration to fulfill the aforementioned decade’s worth of desires to stage it. “It’s brought me to the point where I feel I could cover his work for the next four years and feel incredibly blessed and content to have those opportunities. Savadove is guiding a South Phillyrich cast, including wife Melanie Julian, in what promotional material calls “a moving portrait of the yearning for human connection. The tale finds the playwright Konstantin, embodied by Newbold resident Andrew Carroll, trying to enhance theater’s possibilities by inventing a form and style quite unlike the tone found in traditional stage-based offerings. The writer’s reliance on symbolism, which works to address “the tectonic plates of our psychic lives, using dreamlike, poetic language and movement to convey often existential themes, as opposed to direct narrative, endowed Savadove with the idea to mesh realities, as his interpretation’s patrons become the audience in Konstantin’s brainchild. That decision brings to the fore considerations of melodrama, Naturalism, and Expressionism and has helped the director to grow more fervently attached to Chekhov’s output. “It was definitely among my dream plays, Savadove said of “The Seagull,

which, he added, offers an amazing introduction into the increasingly popular playwright’s ability to incite a deeper experience of theater. “It’s an essential work in thinking about how we approach and appreciate art and also how we set out to make it. It sets the wheels turning and guarantees you a great mental workout. In that respect and through EgoPo’s training regimen that instills in the performers robust vocal and physical styles of acting, “Seagull stands as a perfect advertisement for the members’ allegiance to the belief that greater emotional truth will become evident courtesy of listening to the body and following its impulses. That satisfaction through sensory awareness certainly gives credence to Savadove’s point about exhausting every means to capture the essence of the plot. “There’s still so much fun to have even if a text calls for you to be mindful of every component, he said. “In fact, I’d argue that responsibility makes it more enjoyable, and I’m in awe because I’m among people who likewise want to give everything to getting at the heart of how art sustains us. THE NEW HOPE native has promoted the

need for bold, director-driven work in Philadelphia since his 2005 arrival here. Forced to flee from New Orleans, where he had hoped for EgoPo to become a long-tenured contributor to the city’s burgeoning theater scene, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he arrived wanting to evolve in his passion for promoting theater as an art form and has come to credit the metropolis for its creative fluidity and emotional integrity. “It can be easy to accept the estimation that we’re not a place that’s bursting with deep thinkers because so many outsiders see us strictly as inhabitants of a blue collar city, the Haverford College and Columbia University, School of the Arts alumnus said. “And, of course, that’s complete nonsense. It’s been my experience that there’s plenty of brain power generated on a daily basis, and I think that’s particularly evident when you look at theater companies and what they’re collectively trying to convey to us, namely, that it’s perfectly acceptable to seek answers and apply your findings for the good of so many. EgoPo, whose name derives from the French for “The Physical Self, has enabled Savadove to educate the masses across the country and abroad, with Indo-

nesia and Croatia as international recipients of its quest to revitalize the great classics of theater and literature. Those stops have intensified what the seven-year South Philly resident deems the company’s rich entrepreneurial identity and has coupled, since the ’07-’08 season when he and his peers staged a trio of homages to Tennessee Williams, with festival pieces to reinforce how innovative and provocative their line of work can be. Their aspirations have yielded lengthy discussions on what will comprise their slate, with this season’s selections, due to our political climate in the wake of last year’s general elections, proving quite apt. “We like to reflect on the zeitgeist to lead us to answers on what we’re going to do, and we’re usually dead right when determining what smells like it’s needed to receive treatment, Savadove said. “We’re hearing so much these days about Russia with respect to government matters, but when you move beyond that, it’s undeniable how amazingly influential its creative practitioners have been. Indeed, the “Seagull release tabs the European land “in many ways, our closest cultural sibling. Savadove et al have relied on that relation to present a fall trib-

ute to Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the current regard to Chekhov and will cap their veneration of vaunted writers in the spring through “Anna, a nod to Leo Tolstoy’s “Anna Karenina. As the artistic director and his contemporaries consider the future of EgoPo, with Savadove having proudly spoken of rising subscription tallies, he can also take delight in his full professor of theater designation at Rowan University, whose vigorous physical training program could certainly transform present students into future hires. “We’re looking to grow by continuing to tour and simply being daring, Savadove said. “You have to be all in if you’re trying to make some ripples. A>@ Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com. Love Potion

Sip on these select brews with your significant other (or solo) on Valentine’s Day.

2

id you forget to book a reservation for Valentine’sDay dinner with your sweetie? Did you forget to get your sweetie a bouquet of roses and Whitman’s heartshaped candy box? Did you forget to have a sweetie? Fear not, for that’s what bars were made for: Drowning your miserable forgettable life. Valentine’s Day alone is an occasion for Seagrams boilermakers and Hot Pockets, an evening of Sinatra on the jukebox and porn on your laptop. OK, it doesn’t have to be that awful. For one thing, plenty of singles have completely fulfilled lives without a partner. Or so I’m told. And you can’t deny that celebrating Valentine’s Day without a significant other will save you big bucks. For example, head to the Taproom on 19th (19th & Ritner) and wash down $1 tacos with pints of River Horse Cherry Berliner Weisse - part of the popular South Philly bar’s AntiValentine’s Taco Tuesday. Or, celebrate Galentine’s Day, Leslie Knope’s all-female Valentine’s Eve party. Jet Wine Bar (1525 South St.) is getting into the spirit with a number of wine deals on Feb. 13, but make sure you get a look at its beer list, too. Schuppenboer Tripel from Belgium and episodes of “Parks and Recreation on the bar’s TV seem like a pretty good way to spend an evening. Here’s a few other area Valentine’s beerfocused specials. Saturday, Feb. 11 - They’ll be firkin around with fresh, cask-conditioned ales at Spellbound Brewery (Mount Holly, N.J.). Look for Double Chocolate Raspberry Brown Ale, Ghost Pepper Mango Pale Ale, Cherry Tripel and Hazelnut Coffee Porter served from small kegs known as firkins. Saturday, Feb. 11 - Down the shore, in the tasting room at Cape May Brewing, they’ll

be pouring pints of the brewery’s tribute to Villanova University’s 175th anniversary, Demisemiseptcentennial Ale, conditioned with cherries and almonds. The day-long party includes Valentine-themed games and a Beer Lover’s Flight, with King Porter Stomp, Biscuits & Honey, and Tall, Dark, and Lager. Tuesday, Feb. 14 - You’ll hear lots of nasty griping at El Camino Real (1040 N. 2nd St.) during its Exs Gone But Not Forgotten evening. Share stories of bad dates and lousy ex-partners over drafts of Stone Arrogant Bastard, Coronado Idiot IPA, Coronado Stupid Stout and Flying Dog Raging Bitch. Tuesday, Feb. 14 - Ladies DJ Night at The Abbaye (637 N. 3rd St.) is a loving evening to benefit homeless women. All proceeds from the sale of Philadelphia Brewing will benefit a women’s shelter, and there’s a $5 suggested donation at the door, with a request for additional donations of women’s personal items. Meanwhile, on a completely different topic, a follow-up to last week’s column on coffee-flavored beer. Here’s another cup o’ joe that I got a taste of over the weekend: Yards Heavy Manners. This somewhat strong (7 percent alcohol) foreign export-style stout has a big fresh-roasted coffee aroma and a very smooth body. You can track it down at Local 44 and Clarkville in West Philly, and Strangeloves in Center City. @BEER_RADAR

Its cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg spices (hold the ricotta) are not particularly gruesome. Instead, this somewhat sweet beer nicely complements a bitter hit of Godfatherstyle revenge.

Talluto’s One Pot Rigatoni

:

oyalty has led to longevity for the Talluto family, whose commitment to quality has made the relatives revered members of the food industry since 1967. As a third-generation upholder of a legacy established in Southwest Philly and flourishing in Norristown, Ridley Park and the 9th Street Italian Market, Angel Talluto Storti is reveling in reflecting on what five decades of diligence have engendered and is excited to reward tenured customers and to attract new patrons through a year’s worth of promising promotions. “We’re so thankful for the fact that they’ve gotten us this far, Storti, the assistant to the president, said from her family’s 50,000-square-foot production facility in Folcroft. “Our anniversary is therefore going to be a celebration of all they’ve done for us because we’re deeply appreciative of how much they rely on us to provide authentic products. The Springfield resident and her kin can credit Joseph Talluto for actualizing, at 67 years young, his vision to peddle ravioli. Storti, who recalled spending weekend time with her grandfather as an unmatched means to gain insight into his passion for preparing provisions, has held various roles in continuing the icon’s mission and attributes the durability to remaining aware of and reverent toward the comforts of tradition. “People like experimentation, sure, but they also like knowing that they can always go out and buy what they’ve come to trust, Storti said, noting the family’s dedication to consumers’ cravings came through when they incorporated as Talluto’s Authentic Italian Food. While always a respected entity, Talluto’s has enjoyed considerable acknowledgment lately, with the time-tested brainchild claiming the 2014 PA Governor’s ImPAct Award and the ’15 U.S. Small Business Association Eastern Pennsylvania FamilyOwned Small Business of the Year honor. Those and solid relationships with grocery stores always figure to make their brand a

winner, with pride in their origins coming through in the anniversary promotions that will all include the numbers “67 in their price. Storti elected to choose the recipe for a new component to the menu, a One Pot Rigatoni that she said will be at the Bella Vista location and the other retail spots some point in the first half of the year.

hen he begins his next athletic and scholastic journey in the fall, likely as a Delaware State University freshman, Myles Carter will take with him the designation of being the Academy at Palumbo’s all-time leading scorer. Along with being able to discuss the diligence that netted him 1,041 career points, the North Philly resident will also speak of the maturation that occurred within him and his basketball brethren through their Hawthorne-based studies and competitive endeavors. “We built something special here, so it’s going to be tough to let that all go, the senior said Tuesday from the school, 1100 Catharine St., one day removed from the Griffins’ 54-49 Class AAAA playoff loss at Bartram. “However, we’ll sustain that wherever we go from here as individuals. The 17-year-old sniper has proven a perfect poster child for the tenacity that fourthyear coach Frank Schneider has stressed since taking the job. Failing to make the team as a freshman, Carter committed himself to becoming a better player, and this year, with four fellow seniors joining him in the lineup, he and his peers became highly revered performers. “If you ask Public League coaches for descriptions of this team, you’d hear ‘hard working,’ ‘smart’ and ‘relentless,’ Schneider said. “It was a super intelligent team that fought through some rough patches to have a great identity. In fact, I have never had a group who left the Palumbo jersey in a better state than these kids. The coach added that this year yielded “probably my proudest season because of the accountability that the roster members had to one another. Their hardwood harmony came as an extension of their academic proficiency, as every starter has registered at least a 3.5 grade point average. Knowing they would not back down from the challenges, Schneider loaded the non-league schedule with showcase and tournament games, with seniors Rahee Ellis and Marquez Cruz especially grateful for the tests. “I think those opportunities make us tougher, Ellis, 17, said of the slate that yielded four wins. “Coach definitely knew

The Eagles reached four consecutive NFC Championship Games from 2001 to 2004, and reached a fifth in the 2008 season. Only once, in the 2004 campaign, did the Eagles advanced to the Super Bowl, where they lost to the New England Patriots, 24-21. A city cried. The hope was that the Eagles had established something — they call it a “process

these days in the world of sports — and that the formula for winning was something the Eagles could sustain for years and years to come.Other than the 2008 playoff run and one-and-done playoff appearances in 2009, 2010 and 2013, however, the Eagles haven’t been a Lombardi Trophy threat. They haven’t won a playoff game since 2008, when Donovan McNabb was the quarterback and Tra Thomas and Jon Runyan played offensive tackle and Brian Westbrook was still making plays and, gulp, Kevin Kolb was the quarterback of the future. Those are old men now, by football standards. Times have changed, right? We’re still waiting. We’re still hoping. Now, another Super Bowl has come and gone. Instead of watching with a fevered pitch and a lump in our throats, we stuffed our faces with chips and dip and drank our sodas and critiqued Lady Gaga for her halftime performance, as if it really mattered. No Super Bowl. No parade. We’re still waiting. The good news is that every team in the

NFL is 0-0 in 2017. And that the NFC East is the musical chairs of NFL divisions, with no back-to-back winner since the Eagles in ’03-’04. Worst to first in the league happens all the time. With that, there is the reality side of it, too. The Eagles have a lot of work to do. They need weapons to breathe explosiveness into the offense around franchise quarterback Carson Wentz. They need more pressure on the quarterback, better coverage in the secondary and better tackling for the Jim Schwartz-led defense. While the NFC East is an open book, the level of competition is hopped up. Consider the rise of the Dallas Cowboys, the resiliency of Eli Manning and the explosive Giants passing game and revamped defense, and the potency of Washington and its weapons. The Eagles need to be good, really good, in this offseason. It’s a quiet time right now for the team, as they attend the college all-star games, dig deep at the late-February Scouting Combine

and line up their plan of attack for free agency when it opens in early March. The players are scattered about around the globe, enjoying their offseason. The coaches and personnel department are preparing for a hugely important period of roster improvement. We’re waiting again, with every bit of hope. Wentz looks to be the real deal, and teams with superstar quarterbacks in the NFL are the ones pounding on the door of the Super Bowl year after year. That Super Bowl party? It’s been planned for decades. It’s going to be the party of the century. All the city of Philadelphia needs is a reason to go crazy, get nuts and let loose with all the energy that we’ve been saving since 1960, when the Eagles last won a world championship. Is 2017 the year? The next couple of months are going to tell a lot about the football team and its immediate chances to win it all. A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.
