s South Philly evolves and booms into 2015, there are a handful of projects in the works that will define its neighborhoods’ landscapes into the future. There’s a proposal for a 113-unit mixed-use apartment complex at 2401 Washington Ave., and the Mt. Sinai Hospital

that lays vacant at South Fourth and Reed streets may soon be demolished. But the project that’s nearest to fruition, one that will add a much-desired green space to South of South, is Carpenter Green at 17th and Carpenter streets. “This is something that I’ve been working on since 2008, Lauren Vidas, the chair of the South of South Neighborhood Association (SOSNA) board, said. “It started off as survey where we

asked ‘What do you want SOSNA to focus its eff forts on?’ One of the amenities that people thought was lacking is green space. SOSNA’s Clean and Green committee did a good amount of legwork but, because Julian Abele Park at 22nd and Carpenter streets was very fresh, was mostly rebuffed by then-City Council ASS 5@33< 23D3:=>3;3<B ^OUS ,,

To the Editor: Thanks to Bill Chenevert for his report on the proposed charter school applications for sites in South Philly (“To charter or not to charter, Jan. 29). Indeed, Hamlet had less of a dilemma than the School Reform Commission has in approving any of the 40 applications. The confusion mounts. No wonder the SRC has asked for an extension until June so they can complete their review of all applications, including three new charter proposals for South Philadelphia. Here is an excerpt from the current evaluation of one of them — String Theory — for a new arts centered charter to occupy the

shuttered Abigail Vare Elementary School at 1621 E. Moyamensing Ave. It relates to their academic plan for designing curriculum. “However, the applicant did not provide a clear and cohesive, locally developed curriculum. Everything from the curriculum maps to the assessments to the lessons are to be completely designed by the teachers. Additionally, the applicant emphasizes that teachers should be creating innovative lessons with crosscurricular connections. This type of teaching would be incredibly time intensive. Discussion of professional development for teachers was limited and did not sufficiently address how teachers would be

supported to design their own curriculum. The application also did not address what supports teachers would receive to interpret and utilize student data to inform their instruction. That is just one snippet of the review that lists deficiencies in the plan by String Theory, which currently manages the two Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School campuses on South Broad Street. Obviously, they put their proposal together in a hurry to make the Nov. 15 deadline. They want to begin classes at Vare, hopefully by fall of 2015, with 600 students from kindergarten to fifth grade. But none of their proposals are detailed or carefully constructed. In case anyone wants to know, here are the names of all the evaluators reviewing String Theory. Two of them are from outside the district. The team leader, Carly Bolger, a charter school advocate from Chicago, was once the New Jersey director of the Department of Education’s charter school office. She was recruited by then acting commissioner Chris Cerf, formerly of Edison Schools, Inc., to help with the expansion of charter schools. So we already know what her agenda is. Others on the team include Megan Reamer, district charter application process manager; and evaluators: Donna Best, consultant, formerly from the N.J. Department of Education; and finally, Roger Haynes and Joe Alberti from the School District of Philadelphia. Critics of this process point to the fact that so many of these “volunteer evaluators are outsiders with no background in Philadelphia schools. The SRC put off for seven years accepting charter school applications for valid financial reasons. They cannot even keep district schools open for lack of funds. Did I mention that String Theory presented a budget of more than $6 million to fund their school in the first year? The report did not list the source of this funding. If you wonder why the SRC is forced even to look at these charter school applications, you can thank Philadelphia Republican state Rep. John Taylor, who added an amendment to the cigarette tax law that

requires the SRC to consider all applications for charter schools. It also permits new charter applicants to petition the state Charter Appeals Board if they are rejected by the SRC. That was never allowed before. This guarantees that charter schools will be forced on the School District of Philadelphia. At the present time, thanks to former Gov. Tom Corbett, there is no state reimbursement for charter school allotments. The biggest concern, as Chenevert reports, is how the School District can afford all this expansion of charter schools? Obviously, the goal behind all this churn is to transfer funding from the cash-strapped district to private, so-called nonprofit education managers. And for parents who may be attracted to such schools, the main concern is the perennial stumbling block of special admission requirements. 5Z]`WO 1 3\R`Sa A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

AO[ VS Wa To the Editor: The media’s advertising ad nauseam that Sam Smith is gay does him a disservice. Why even mention his sexual preference? Shouldn’t it just be Sam Smith won a Grammy? By stating he’s gay, one is differentiating him from the other winners. One is essentially segregating him because he won a Grammy Award. If one insists on making it an issue, then one needs to refer to the other winners as heterosexual. Most Americans, I hope, do not care if he’s gay or straight! He’s a musician, an entertainer, first and foremost! In fact, every time one mentions if people are gay or straight, he or she diminishes who they are or what they have accomplished. It almost sounds like one believes he won a Grammy Award, despite him being gay. Sexuality does not define who a person is! But it does define those who find it necessary to define others. Stop trying to make it an issue. It’s not! 1V`Wa 2]gZS A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

nthony Nicodemo, instead of facing a retrial that would have begun Monday, pleased guilty Friday to third-degree murder and related offenses in the slaying of Gino DiPietro. The 43-year-old /\bV]\g <WQ]RS[] entered his plea in a Common Pleas courtroom and received a 25- to 50-year sentence in state prison from Judge Jeffrey Minehart. On Dec. 12, ’12, someone gunned down DiPietro as the latter stood by his pickup truck on the 2800 block of South Iseminger Street, with a witness memorizing the license plate number of a black Honda Pilot SUV that sped from the scene. Within an hour, authorities identified the vehicle and located it in the back of Nicodemo’s Packer Park residence. Police took the now-convicted individual in custody and recovered a .357 Smith & Wesson gun behind the driver’s seat of the SUV after obtaining a search warrant. Ballistics evidence later proved the gun a match for the murder weapon. As part of his plea deal, prosecutors dropped a first-degree murder charge, with conspiracy and weapons offenses joining the third-degree murder offense. Published reports noted that authorities are still searching for a motive and the gunman. To report information, call the FBI at 215418-4000, or visit philadelphia.fbi.gov.

The Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI are trying to track down a man who robbed a Center City bank then left behind a grenade in South of South. The at-large figure, whom authorities are considering armed and dangerous, entered Susquehanna Bank, 1845 Walnut St., at 4:50 p.m. Feb. 3 with what appeared to be a green grenade in his right hand. He presented a demand note to a teller and after obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, he fled on foot, heading westbound on Walnut Street then southbound through Rittenhouse Square. The Police Department’s Ordinance Disposal Unit determined the item to be an inert replica grenade upon discovering it on the 2000 block of Fitzwater Street. Authorities stated they might offer a reward for information leading to the man’s capture, with tipsters able to remain anonymous. To report information, call the FBI at 215418-4000, or visit philadelphia.fbi.gov.

>]W\b ]T b`]cPZS Police arrested a Point Breeze man for shooting another male. At 1:14 p.m. Feb. 2, authorities responded to a report of gunshots in the area of the 1300 block of South Ringgold Street, observing ballistics evidence and a blood trail at the intersection of South Ringgold and Reed streets, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They also learned the victim had received transport, via private auto, to HUP, where personnel treated him for left elbow-situated gunshot wound. Witnesses told detectives that a fight had occurred in the Last One Lounge, 1401 S. Ringgold St., just prior to the shooting. Video surveillance depicted the complainant inside the bar, with an unknown male pulling up in a dark-colored vehicle. The latter then supposedly walked into the bar

FEB?9; H;FEHJ and immediately began punching the victim, leading to a fight. The two figures exited the establishment, with the offender allegedly returning to his ride to grab an unknown object, Tolliver said. He supposedly chased the complainant northbound on Ringgold Street from Reed Street, where, out of range of the camera, a shooting occurred. The reported aggressor then used his car to flee the area, with the complainant doing the same. Later that day, authorities learned from several law enforcement sources that identified the shooter as a trick dirt bike rider named Prince Lewis, also known as Tustroke Prince. At 6 a.m. Friday, detective and SWAT served search and arrest warrants at the man’s home on the 1200 block of South 22nd Street, arresting Lewis without incident. They charged the 28-year-old with possession of an instrument of crime, firearms violations, recklessly endangering another person, simple and aggravated assault and attempted criminal homicide. He had bail denied and awaits a Feb. 24 preliminary hearing.

An investigation by the Philadelphia Police Department and the FBI discovered that in December ’09, Garcia and Joanis entered into a scheme by which they agreed to rob suspected drug pushers. The defendants would often stop and frisk individuals who were allegedly loitering, and if they recovered any drugs, they would detain the figures and steal some or all of their money. On other occasions, they would call on an accomplice, who, at their direction, would summon a suspected drug dealer for a meeting in the latter’s car. The person would then buy a small amount of drugs, usually crack cocaine, and then leave some of them in plain view on the floorboard of the vehicle. After the phony buyer would exit, the defendants would arrive in their patrol car, stop the dealer and arrest him after seeing the contraband. The investigation also noted they would then steal the peddler’s profits and split it among themselves. When committing these offenses, they wore their police uniforms and openly carried firearms. To conceal their actions, Garcia and Joanis falsified reports by failing to disclose their use of the accomplice, fabricating the reason for the stop and electing not to divulge some or all of the confiscated cash. Along with his jail time, Garcia, based on a ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Legrome Davis, must pay a fine of $5,000 and a special assessment of $900 and will have five years of supervised release.

he first floor of The Ethical Society building in Rittenhouse Square was packed with Helen Gym’s friends and family, media, and public school supporters on Monday afternoon as Gym announced she would run for an at-large City Council seat. The founder of Parents United for Public Education is seen as one of the most vocal advocates of public education in Philadelphia. Enthusiasm and an endorsement from the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers’ president Jerry Jordan were emphatic. “The Federation of Public Teachers enthusiastically endorses [Gym]. We will support her campaign with the same energy and commitment that she has shown in her fight for quality public education in Philadelphia, Jordan said. “Helen is by far the most qualified to speak to the challenges facing public schools. Sadie Sprague-Lott, a 2014 South Philly Review Rising Star and resident of the 700 block of South Ninth Street, was there to vouch for Gym, too. The senior at Science Leadership Academy said “I’m here today to tell you about one of Philadelphia’s most dedicated, fierce and tireless advocates – she’s passionate about making things better for all of Philadelphia and puts her whole heart into everything that she does. Sprague-Lott was at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Pennsport resident on the 100 block of Emily Street, Cameron Kline has broken a new glass ceiling barrier in City Hall. In his second week on the job, he now holds the distinction of being the first openly gay District Attorney Com-

munications Director and Spokesperson. As he put it, there’s a lot going on at Seth R. Williams’ offices in Center City – 900 employees spread over multiple buildings, the DA’s office is a very large office to head up all communications. But Kline had good training. In 2002, he began as the communications head of the School District of Philadelphia. “I liken it a little to my baptism by fire when I joined the School District of Philadelphia – it was probably the hardest and most challenging thing up to that point in my career, he said.

But Kline is excited for what the DA’s office means on a city-wide goal: “To keep Philadelphia safe and make sure the law’s applied appropriately and get the bad guys off the streets. The Illinois native is a self-proclaimed “political dork, and he says he always knew he wanted to find a way to give back to his community. “I’d always been somewhat interested in politics and public service. Working in the governor’s office in Illinois was an amazing experience, Kline said. “I see politics as a way to give back and do good, and I love it – it’s exciting. He got invested in his new neighborhood’s voting wards and civic association, met his City Council District Councilman Mark Squilla and soon found his way to state Sen. Larry Farnese’s office as his press aid after a communications post at PECO. Kline’s status as the first in the LGBT

community to take this job is his doing, meaning he’s emboldened by the ongoing march toward complete equality. Putting his sexual identity out there for public consumption is a brave move, one he’s taking on gladly but with a little hesitance. “When I came out, I decided that I was going to be out all the way. I couldn’t live my life in a way that wasn’t true to who I am, he said. That stance led him to return his Eagle Scout medal to the Texas-based national headquarters of the Boy Scouts of America with a heartfelt letter co-written by his father (also an Eagle Scout). “I want to do everything that I can to make equality real in our communities, he said. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. They’ve been our biggest cheerleaders on this project, and he has been extremely supportive in terms of pushing this project along, Vidas, a resident of the 1500 block of Montrose Street, said. “He introduced a bill to rezone the property, [which would] rezone the property to green space – to preserve it as a green space. It legitimizes our efforts. This is not a neighborhood pipe dream. This is on its way to becoming a reality. Though hesitant, Vidas said she hopes work will begin within six months. “Ideally, we’ll be able to get Phase 1 soil down, make it flat, and hopefully that will get done in the next couple of months. Once we do that, we’ll be able to start to activate the space. With Edwin M. Stanton School, 1700 Christian St., and a renewed interest in South Philly neighborhood schools, having Carpenter Green across the street wouldn’t hurt. Also, with a large residential development diagonally across the street in Carpenter Square, and a brand new development project green-lit across 17th Street from Carpenter Square, a green space is starting to feel like an emergency need. “When SOSNA came to the Councilman in 2012, they had compiled a great number of signatures from around the neighborhood expressing support for the maintenance of this particular lot as green space, Steve Cobb, Johnson’s director of legislation, said. “Part of the motivation for maintaining this as green space was the lack of dedicated parks space in the Graduate Hospital neighborhood. PORTRAIT PHOTO BY COREY CARTER

B?<;IJOB;I most open to an absurdist approach. “Language is undoubtedly important to this work, he said of the century-old comedy. “Because of that, it offers characters searching for greater meaning to life and dealing with the struggles of that quest. Despite some views that absurdist material is overly dense, that is the intent of the genre. Regardless of the classification of the work, one need not struggle to tab Johnny, the son of an underwear magnate whose house serves as the setting for the done-ina-day play, as a disciple of pragmatism and a honer of narrow views. In reviewing his IRC credits, Stanger considers the character, who becomes a suitor of Lina, another figure who beholds bending his will as a betrayal of his ideals, a characteristic that counters how the actor conducts his own life. “It’s fun to take on such individuals to gain a sense of how much we can miss if we shun change, he said. “Even as performers, actors, actresses, whatever, I think we do audiences a disservice if we’re not fully engaged in pushing ourselves and being vulnerable. Acceptance of those elements of his craft has helped Stanger to deem the absurdist canon a perfectly sane selection for those

looking to grasp the core of humanity. Having abandoned his comfort zone for the discipline’s demanding environs, he loves that, unlike Johnny, he can welcome such occasions not as chances to tremble but as opportunities to revel. “I enjoy every moment of what I’m doing, Stanger said. “Looking at this city, I believe there’s great work to be had and even greater people to be around when making wonderful pieces of art. THE INDEBTED INDIVIDUAL initiated his interest in acting as a Devon denizen, with middle and high school roles ramping up his curiosity. Not necessarily seeing the endeavor as his future vocation, he experienced his epiphany as a sophomore, halting his hesitation to test his talent more vigorously. “I realized this is where my heart is, Stanger said of his stage-situated affinity. “Despite doubts initially, I think there’s something to be said to sticking with something that makes us feel alive no matter what odds we face. Concentrating on classical acting as a registrant at Allentown’s Muhlenberg College, he commenced his comprehension of the complexity of his calling, but he did not shudder, as his peers helped him to

Stanger has also spent roughly one year showing the strength of his timbre as a voice-over artist and narrator, dubbing his Havertown-based tutelage as offering a subtle medium for conveying ideas. Using the same principles behind his acting acumen to garner gigs, he anticipates delving more into that realm following the completion of “Misalliance. “I’m really excited about whatever might come along, he said of linking his established passion for acting with his budding beckoning to voice-based undertakings. “If I can continue to expand, I’m going to call myself fulfilled at the end of the day. Stanger would like his evolution to breed enthusiasm for directing, deeming that potential pursuit a product of immersing himself in all elements of theater, thanks largely to the IRC. “Many actors think they can give direction as well as they can take it, he said. “I want to test that theory. SPR For tickets, call 215-285-0472, or visit misalliance.bpt.me. value the vocation as a craft. Growing up not far from Philadelphia, he knew of its thriving theater community and relocated here to figure out how he could fit in with its focus on potent productions. “I’m still working on determining exactly how to do that,â€? he said with a laugh, “but what I can say is there is such camaraderie among everyone, especially the performers based in South Philly, that it’s easy to be energized when taking on a new project.â€? Certainly thankful for all of his parts, including turns for Bella Vista-based Luna and Flashpoint Theatre Co., he claims the IRC as his most highly regarded employer, lauding Brock, the company’s producing artistic director and the overseer of “Misalliance,â€? for bringing to life classics and new pieces. Well beyond his initial apprehension over attempting to mesh with the entity’s emphasis on staging “illuminating, challenging and humorous interpretations of absurdist-leaning plays,â€? per the “Misallianceâ€? press release, he cherishes the troupe’s inclusivity and looks forward to listing more productions on his rĂŠsumĂŠ. “Everyone has a say in helping us to present the best work that we can,â€? he said. “There’s comfort in knowing your voice matters.â€?

admit it up front, I like Jim Kenney. I like that he’s one of us. I liked when he first entered City Council, and a former editor of this newspaper alerted me that after she interviewed him, she thought Kenney was one of the best things that had happened to South Philly politics. I liked when he took an interest in the quality of life in our neighborhoods when no one else seemed to care. I’ve watched him over the years develop into a politician who not only looked out for our interests, but refused to cater to our own biases. As his vision broadened over the years, I watched him show the same interest and compassion for other areas of the city the same way he’s shown for our own. He took stands on issues that were anything but easy — protecting the rights of the gay, lesbian and transgender community, decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana and fighting to end the stop and frisk procedures that cause the minority community and police to come into needless conflict. While doing so, he’s never forgotten the needs of the working folks in this city and the necessity of labor unions at a time when our middle class is fast disappearing. I liked seeing him in the lounge at Palm where my wife and I and other just plain folks could walk up to him and easily talk about the things that affect this city. Philadelphia is what Kenney cares most about. It’s where he’s lived all his life, where rubbing elbows with the people around here is what keeps his inner flame going. I’ve read the criticisms and I’m sure Jim has, too, when he made the announcement that he was resigning his council seat to run for mayor. He’s too angry, implied Daily News columnist Stu Bykofsky, and a loner. Nobody’s got his back in Council, wrote Bykofsky. Ironically, in the same edition of that newspaper, it was reported that one Republican councilman, Dennis O’Brien, crossed party lines to all but support Kenney’s candidacy, as did Democratic 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla. As for the anger issue, sometimes one man’s anger is another man’s passion. Some people just have a lower tolerance for fools. I often disagreed with Frank Rizzo, but I never heard anyone confuse his passion for anger. During the much-praised (and deservedly so) two terms that Ed Rendell served as mayor,

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` S d W S e Q ] [

he could read the riot act to you with the best of them, but I didn’t hear anger being a disqualifying issue. But hey, if you see it as anger, maybe a little “anger is needed in City Hall — anger at the intractable problems we face while too often it’s politics as usual. I’m not dismissing Bykofsky’s concerns. One of the problems that has dogged Mayor Michael Nutter’s administration is a lack of a good working relationship with City Council. The same problem hurt Mayor John Street, ironically someone who as president of City Council had been an important factor in helping Rendell succeed. Even further back, the battles between then-Mayor Bill Green and Council practically destroyed his administration. One can’t overestimate the need for the mayor and City Council to work in harmony to get things done. Kenney has the experience. He knows how council works. He above all, should know he needs Council to be a cooperative partner for a successful administration. Kenney will not be able to afford to be intractable if he wants his agenda passed. His challenge will be to make sure his passion is contagious and not destructive. I once wrote that what this city needs to energize its politics is a viable two-party system. I worked for Sam Katz when he ran as a Republican for mayor and lost twice mainly because he couldn’t overcome the 8-1 registration edge of the Democrats. I voted for Republican Arlen Specter when he came close to winning against the mediocre James H. J. Tate and ending the Democrats’ stranglehold on this city. But if the last time around is any indication, the Republican Party in this town is not ready to run anyone who can win or maybe even deserves to win. Even if Katz decides to run this time, word has it that it will be as a Democrat. So, yes, I’ve given up on the Republicans in Philadelphia because in large part they have given up on themselves. Another account by Chris Hepp in Sunday’s Philadelphia Inquirer lamented that we have too many old folks in the race. Maybe Hepp has a point, but he larded the argument. I’m not against young blood entering our city politics, but Joe Clark, whose tenure began the reform movement that took this city out of the political dark ages, was 51. Dick Dilworth, as the writer admitted in his article, was just a month younger than Jim Kenney when he took office. Kenney is 56. Rizzo was 52 when left the police commissioner’s job to become mayor. Those of us who admire Kenney have watched and waited for him to take his shot. And he has taken the risk, resigning a safe council seat to do so. Kenney has often appealed to our better angels around here. In doing so, he has rattled some chains. Kenney’s passion is just what this mayor’s race needed right about now. SPR

Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) balances unbridled desire and practicality in her dealings with Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan). N 0g @ 9c`b =aS\Zc\R Movie Reviewer

ifty Shades of Grey is a wild dance of distress and satisfaction. Indeed, the film, like the E.L. James fan-fiction phenomenon on which it’s based, deals in the specifics of BDSM, wherein pain and pleasure walk hand in tied-up hand. But the balance of ease and unease in this kinky offbeat romance is much more potent in regard to a woman’s personal and sexual agency. For a while, the gradual surrender of virgin Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) to gazillionaire Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) is icky to a fault, especially when one considers that such female subservience has been rabidly devoured by female readers the world over. The movie picks up steam (and palatability) when it becomes more of a balance of power, and Anastasia, a college student who connects with Christian after conducting an interview for her school paper, begins to negotiate the terms of her crush’s precise tastes for herself. After being deflowered by a man who showers her with gifts but “doesn’t do romance, Anastasia is given a literal contract outlining how she’ll be the “submissive to his “dominant, meaning she’ll get kissed, but bound and gagged, too. Knowing she has this chilly, self-professed misanthrope enchanted, Anastasia finds she has straps to handle, too — the reins on Christian’s typical wants and his heart. Any time director Sam TaylorJohnson pauses to focus on how Anastasia might “change her brooding beau, or how said beau has come to be such a stoic, Comment at southphillyreview.com/opin- compulsive sadist (cue the troubled childhood backstory), “Fifty Shades becomes ion/cardella.

an unbearable cheese fest. But when Anastasia is exerting her authority, and “holding on to her free will, the movie excels at exploring the dynamics of gender roles. As the female lead, Johnson proves herself a true discovery, perfectly cast for both Plain Jane awkwardness and liberating sexual allure. Dornan, conversely, is a veritable catastrophe, his nonexistent acting skills stripping him of appeal. The flaw isn’t enough to derail the film, but given the subject matter, it throws a rather large wrench in the gears.

For film buffs, Roger Ebert was a a superhero, which makes watching his deterioration in the biographical documentary “Life Itself all the more heartbreaking. How could this tireless titan become so vulnerable? Ultimately, the film is a celebration of Ebert’s resilience, personally and professionally. Director Steve James (“Hoop Dreams), who knew Ebert well, renders his legacy with a loving touch. +(* Comment and see the trailers for this week’s movies at southphillyreview.com/arts-and-enterr tainment/movies.

n 2007, chef Gene Giuffi and his wife, Amy, opened Cochon BYOB, a charming French bistro in Queen Village. Although duck and rabbit are on the menu, Giuffi gives a strong nod to pork. I enjoyed my dinner there. Their second restaurant was Blue Belly BBQ in Bella Vista, a tiny eat-in, take-out place that I also liked. In November, Giuffi made a big decision; he decided to trade in barbecue sauce for excellent marinara, and open Square Pie. Giuffi grew up in Brooklyn, where he cut his teeth on square Sicilian thick crust pizza. He wanted to bring a piece of his childhood to South Philly. The crust differs from Chicago thick crust because it is prepared in small batches of dough that undergo a long fermentation. Thus, the crust is more akin to homemade bread than thin, crunchy crust. This neighborhood shoebox is kitted out with red walls, colorful artwork, red and white checked tablecloths, along with white linen napkins. Like Cochon, it is a BYOB, and seats about 20 people. We had to wait only about 20 minutes on a busy night, and sat at the bar. We watched two chefs pat fresh dough into square pans, top them with ingredients and bake them in the oven. We began with ensalata ($11), which was a mix of fresh romaine, marinated artichokes, pickled eggplant, oven-dried tomatoes, shredded provolone and a perfectly hard-boiled egg topped with a red wine vinaigrette. Although the ingredients were crisp and fresh, I felt too much vin4Oab 0`SOY Celebre’s Pizzeria: 1536 Packer Ave., 215-467-3255, celebrespizza. com, $ Millie’s Luncheonette & Ice Cream: 1441 W. egar was used in the dressing. Sometimes a marinade contains too much vinegar as well, so if they were first rinsed and then dressed, the salad would not have made my lips pucker as much as it did. If there is an award for arancini ($12), Square Pie wins it easily. I have eaten them all over town. Arborio rice is mixed with bits of prosciutto and roasted red peppers

and mozzarella, covered in crumbs and deep fried. They were crisp and golden on the outside and creamy inside. They sat on a pool of what I think is the finest homemade marinara in the city. I asked one of the chefs what kind of tomatoes were used in making the sauce. “The can says Jersey Fresh, he said of the good news. Jersey tomatoes make one fine marinara. The perfectly seasoned sauce was not sweet. The pies come in small and large sizes. We sampled Salciccia ($12 and $15) and

Porchetta ($14 and $17). The first was prepared with tasty sausage, roasted peppers, sautÊed onions, fresh mozzarella and topped with tomato sauce. Sausage and peppers is a true Italian culinary marriage. It makes for a delicious appetizer, but when mixed with onions and topped with cheese, it is one fine mixture for a pizza. Keep in mind, these pizzas do not have the crunch like their cousin from Naples. Still, it is a matter of taste. Sicilian thick crust pizza is akin to fine homemade bread with pizza toppings. The porchetta pie was topped with Giuffi’s famous pulled pork, which was highly seasoned, sautÊed fresh spinach, garlic and provolone. This combination worked as beautifully as the sausage pie. There are five pastas on the menu, as well as side dishes. I watched one chef prepare some pasta dishes, and want to make a return visit to try them. Square Pie is the first of its kind in South Philly. People were picking up pizzas throughout our dining experience, and as soon as tables opened up, those waiting in line were seated. The family-friendly is open Tuesday through Saturday. Lunch is served noon to 2 p.m., and dinner is off fered 5 to 9 p.m. Three tips of the toque to Square Pie. SPR

Palladino’s on Passyunk Owner/Chef: Luke Palladino Opened: Dec. 18, 2014 1934 E. Passyunk Ave. 267-928-4339 lukepalladino.com/Palladinos

is Palladino’s on Passyunk, which marks the this-side-of-the-Delaware-River debut of internationally acclaimed chef Luke Palladino, whose name now shines brightly on his East Passyunk Crossing marque. The newcomer to the booming neighborhood foodie scene is quickly developing a comfort zone. “The community has been really great to me, he said. “They are very welcoming. He gutted the former Colombo’s space, which was damaged in an August 2012 fire, and has transformed it into an upscale Italian steak and seafood house. Palladino, who calls the Jersey Shore home, has worked with the likes of well-respected chefs Emeril Lagasse and Todd English. He also enjoyed a late-1990s stint in Venice where he served as executive chef and partner at the internationally celebrated Ristorante al Covo. Things are literally heating up this month, as Palladino is previewing his Sunday brunch menu

this weekend. “I think there is a need for it, the Culinary Institute of America grad said of the menu that will include Kobe beef hash and eggs, bread pudding French toast and Italian eggs Benedict. For some, operating the avenue hot spot would be enough, but Palladino also has a namesake 60-seat restaurant in Linwood, N.J., and runs Luke Palladino Catering, a full-service catering and event planning enterprise. The constantly commuting chef is sharing his Spaghetti Carbonara dish, which is one of the specials on his Valentine’s week bill of fare. “It’s a great, hearty winter dish, he said. “It’s really delicious. Later this month, Feb. 22 to 28 to be exact, Palladino will be making his East Passyunk Restaurant Week debut, offering three courses for $35. “There are a lot of different options, he said. “We want people to come check us out.

Bring four quarts of water to a boil, plus 2 tablespoons of salt. Set a large pan over mediumhigh heat, and pour in the olive oil, followed by the pancetta. Cook until the pancetta is crispy and golden brown. Add the sausage, and brown, then add the minced garlic. Pull the pan away from the heat. Meanwhile in a bowl, beat the eggs with the cream, nutmeg and lemon. When the water comes to a boil, cook the pasta until al dente. Drain the pasta, and add it to the pan with the pancetta and sausage. Add the egg and cheese mixture, parsley and half of the cheese; toss vigorously until well combined. Serve at once, and pass with the remaining cheese. +(* Comment at southphillyreview.com/foodand-drink/features.

ccording to acquaintances, Christopher Gedraitis could captivate quite easily, which made the 30-year-old’s March 23, 2006 death from an undiagnosed heart condition a wrenching reminder of the brevity of life. Aware of the eternity of influence, though, they decided to honor the Whitman product, who used his love of sports to mentor many area competitors, by creating the nonproff it Friends of Beast, based on their loved one’s lifelong nickname. Continuing their crusade to complement his kindness, they united in Northern Liberties Saturday for their ninth annual Beast Day fundraising venture for youth athletics. “He was such a compassionate, giving guy, committee member Todd Burnside said at McFadden’s Irish Pub & Johnny Utah’s Saloon complex. “I knew him for more than a decade and loved witnessing how selfless he was. The Far Northeast inhabitant noted the native of the 300 block of Tree Street valued volunteering to transform children into champions on and off their respective playing surfaces. Heading into the weekend occasion, he and his peers had raised approximately $150,000 for Philadelphia and South Jersey youngsters, with local

entities such as the Two Street Warriors Catholic Youth Organization, the Edward O’Malley Athletic Association and Burke Playground benefiting. “Every occasion we have had has reinforced what was at the heart of what he loved, which was contributing to the community, Burnside said as guests, adjacent to a banner bearing Gedraitis’ image, purchased chances for auction items. “I know we’re all better people for having had him in our lives no matter how well or for how long we knew him. The inaugural celebration occurred nine months after the young man’s passing, with the first few gatherings proving rather informal. Realizing the growth of the mission, Burnside and others elected to establish a nonprofit, with the since-shuttered Finnegan’s Wake as the predecessor to McFadden’s. Whereas the early functions possessed a somewhat solemn and somber quality, recent affairs have become more celebratory and abounding in recollections of how the fallen figure gregariously gave of himself. “Being together can maybe bring back the pain of losing him, but the turnout makes us feel better, sister-in-law Karen Gedraitis said of commending his advocacy for local athletes’ immersion into their sports and acceptance of responsibility. “He’s been gone for nearly nine years,

so it’s wonderful to see that he still means so much to so many people. The denizen of the 2100 block of South Howard Street tabbed the honoree a friend who felt that giving to others helped him to feel stronger about himself. “He had a great personality, she said, noting that he became the third member of his clan to carry the “Beast moniker, following his father and brother, the latter being her husband. “It takes away a bit of the sting of not having him here, though we’d rather be making new memories with him, that’s for sure. AS ADMIRERS OF Christopher Gedraitis’ altruistic feats exchanged stories, Burnside, who shared a home with the difference maker in North Wildwood, elaborated on the expansion of Friends of Beast, with 2015 as a potentially huge year. “It’s vitally important to help kids to gain more exposure to sports and to have so many people who think the same way here tonight is so rewarding, he said of the crowd, which he hoped would surpass 400 by the end of the four-hour festivities, which included the talents of local musicians. “This gives us a sense of how many lives we can inspire because Chris wanted to help as many people as he could. That was one of his gifts. In being benefactors, too, he and his col-

*," -*",/leagues, who in a release stated “Beast was fiercely loyal to his friends, co-workers and his neighborhood, have loved helping Keystone and Garden State inhabitants, endowing able-bodied and disabled children with equal opportunities to mature as athletes and future leaders. Burnside stated that although Gedraitis loved baseball and hockey, the organization has not limited its scope in touching lives, especially given that his friend played football at St. John Neumann High School, formerly 2600 Moore St. “My immediate impression is that he was a guy who was a pleasure to be around because he was always in a good mood, attendee Tim Cairy said. The resident of the 2800 block of South 17th Street spent two years as a teammate to Gedraitis and garnered many examples of his polite nature, including his offering assistance to Cairy’s father, the equipment overseer for the Pirates’ gridiron club, in lining McNichol Field. Making his third appearance at Beast Day, Cairy, invoking guest and committee person Dan Stevenson, a 2013 South Philly Review Difference Maker and resident of the 1900 block of South Second Street, said the evening celebration definitely matched the scope of what Gedraitis would have wanted to generate money for the next generations of accomplished athletes. That his friend served as the inspiration for the fundraiser meant much to Cairy in that the night proved how valuable everyone still deems Beast’s gentle personality but also gave him a hint of sadness in that his acquaintance had his influential life cut way too short with so many youths in need of support. “That’s where we have to step up, the Marconi inhabitant said. “It’s a wonderful cause that’s going to continue to inspire. “We are starting to branch out more, Burnside said, revealing the organization will hold a Neshaminy-situated event next month. “Chris made us proud. We’re just looking to keep his sense of sacrifice going strong. SPR For more information, visit facebook. c o m / p a g e s / B e a s t - D a y - Fr i e n d s - o f Beast/367888373239127.
