Kenyatta Johnson just became the 15th elected Philly Democrat who also serves as an elected ward leader.

(In Yiddish — to “kvetch is to complain)

n days gone by (or if you prefer days of “yore), there was a radio commentator Tom Cardella by the name of Gabriel Heatter. Heatter always opened his show by saying, “There’s good news tonight. If Heatter were around today, I wonder where the hell he would find the good news? Although, as I understand it, KYW Eyewitness News is promising to include more uplifting news in its coverage. Hey Ukee and Jessica, how many times can you run a story about a fireman rescuing a kitten? So in a country that’s trying to decipher the definition of “extreme vetting, I will do what I do best. Extreme kvetching. How can Gov. Tom Wolf and his legislature solve any problem if they can’t figure out a simple way to buy an alcoholic beverage in this state? I know I should be thankful for the recent changes enacted in the state liquor stores. One change is that you may now purchase wine at our local supermarket. But really, do you have to be a conservative Republican to think that it would be easier to just privatize the sale of liquor and beer? We’re ASS CARDELLA ^OUS ! ,,

WKH QHLJKERUKRRG &RXQFLOPDQ .HQ\DWWD -RKQVRQ Pennsylvania law prohibits an elected official from holding two offices at once. In short, you can’t double dip from the state treasury. But an elected, unpaid position as a ward leader? It’s practically a tradition here in Philadelphia. Johnson is the 15th elected Democrat who

also represents one of Philadelphia’s 66 wards. Collectively, ward leaders and their committee people pack a big punch in local elections. They’re the ones working outside polling places on Election Day, pushing candidates in down-ballot races and allocating “street money to foot soldiers who help get out the vote. Though that path never materialized, he still has had ample cause to cast his eyes to the heavens thanks to his affinity for Christianity. The devout believer has honored his faith by composing “God Has a Way, a gospel music collection that he dubs “a debut album 56 years in the making. “I’ve always thought that eventually one very fortunate door would open for me and that I’d be there ready to walk through it, the Pennsport resident said not far from his Center City law firm job. “It’s not the destination but the journey that truly counts, and I have had a very educational march to where I am now. Groom has wed himself to the tireless promotion of the seven-track homage to his maker since its release last May. Recent regard for the songs and their availability through such titans as CD Baby, iTunes and Spotify have helped to reinforce his mission to “break all the rules, especially how old you got to be to be a superstar. “People can beat themselves up over wondering when it’s going to be their time, the soon-to-be-57-year-old said. “That’s futile, though, because you can end up losing sight of all the wonderful things that happen to you each day. To the Editor: Rachel Garber’s response (“Granting a fair start, Feb. 9) to my letter on the 2017 March for Life in Washington, D.C. is impressive. She managed to list every boilerplate objection ever lodged against pro-life advocates like me: We care about children ONLY before they are born. We never support any services to children or poor women. We have a problem with public schools, and so forth. She might be shocked to learn that a lifelong child advocate and educator like me agrees with every program on her list that supports children and families, including: pre-natal care, pre-K, school lunches

and education itself. Other civilized nations like Finland already model universal health care that begins before birth, with free public education from early childhood to college. Bring it on! As a cancer survivor, I fully support women’s health services like cancer screenings, including mammograms. The government can certainly pay for contraceptives, but may not force individuals or organizations with religious objections to supply them. The Hyde Amendment prevents using federal money for abortions. Every health service that Planned Parenthood provides, besides abortion, can be supplied at com-

munity health centers. Why not install more of them in every neighborhood? We have a great one right here in South Philly at Broad and Morris streets. We must decide what path we want our country to take. Being pro-life includes promoting comprehensive sex education to prevent unwanted pregnancies (as well as sexually transmitted diseases), lifelong universal health and human services to families, and fully funded public education. Or we can embark on the slippery slope of death that promotes on demand abortions, infanticide, assisted suicides and the death penalty. I say we choose life. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

Dreaming of a change To the Editor: Since the election, many of my friends have mentioned that they have “voter’s remorseâ€? after casting their vote for Donald Trump. Is it any wonder? In less than four weeks, our new president has managed to alienate and frustrate several world leaders with his outrageous comments as well as jeopardize the lives of thousands of immigrants and refugees with his travel ban. (Yes, it is indeed a “ban.â€?) Our country is in a state of real and undeniable turmoil. Alternative facts cannot dispute the truth. Our national security is threatened because Mr. Trump has delusions of grandeur and ambitious goals to 1:3/@E/B3@ 63@3 E3 1=;3( BVS >VWZZWS >VO\ObWQ Wa `SORg T]` a^`W\U govern the United States comparable to b`OW\W\U O\R a] O`S bVS >VWZZWSa eV] Z]ORSR bVSW` #! be a “great leader. Why don’t the Trump supporters see anything wrong with this picture? America has been the most respected country in the world for decades. It has thrived continuously because of the enduring principles of the U.S. Constitution. As citizens, we must not tolerate Mr. Trump’s discrimination of people regarding race, ethnicity, religion or sexual identity. His cabinet appointees clearly reflect his lack of diversity. Isn’t it frightening Steve Bannon is a member of Mr. Trump’s inner circle? Hopefully, one of three scenarios may prevail in the near future. Mr. Trump may resign when he and the GOP controlled Congress recognize that he lacks the intelligence and leadership skills to govern our country. Or, if and when he releases his tax returns, investigations may disclose that conflicts exist with him personally and his many companies which would justify impeachment proceedings. Finally, a federal indictment for his business ventures may be a mechanism to terminate his presidency. A woman can dream, right? Carol A. woman was pronounced dead following a multi-car accident in East Passyunk Crossing Saturday, and police have a suspect in custody. Police have arrested Anthony Russino, 59, from the 2600 block of South Jessup Street, and charged him with involuntary m a n s l a u g h t e r, homicide by vehicle, driving under the influence, tampering with evidence and related offenses. At approximately 3:09 p.m., the operator of a 2014 silver Honda Accord was traveling northbound on the 1800 block of South 13th Street when it allegedly struck four other vehicles, three of which were parked and unattended, Officer Tanya Little of Police Public Affairs said. The operator of the Accord is believed to have exited the vehicle and attempted to remove his license plate before he fled the scene on foot. Caroline Morgan, 56, sat in the driver’s seat of a 2012 Silver Fiat at the time of the incident, Little said. She was transported to Jefferson hospital by PFD Medic 43 prior to police arrival, where she was pronounced dead at 4:36 p.m.

A former Neumann-Goretti basketball player is believed to be one of the victims from Saturday’s double shooting in Queen Village. On Sunday, at approximately 10:30 p.m., 3rd District Officers responded to a hospital case at Jefferson Hospital for a report of a male shot in the leg. Officers located a 16-year-old male who informed police that while standing outside in the courtyard with friends on the 900 block of South Fourth

Street, he heard several gunshots and started running, then realized he was shot in the leg, according to Officer Tanya Little of the Police Public Affairs said. He was transported to Jefferson hospital by private vehicle, and listed in stable condition. At approximately 12:23 a.m., 3rd District Officers responded to Pennsylvania Hospital for a second shooting victim — a 22-yearold male who informed officers that he was standing in the same location with friends when he heard five or six gunshots. The individual, according to published reports, is current Towson University senior forward and co-captain John Davis. Police, as of press time, had not released the names of either victim. The latter victim ran home, and noticed he was bleeding from his right knee He was transported to Pennsylvania Hospital by private vehicle and later transported to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center by medics in stable condition with a gunshot wound to his right knee. The Public Affairs department released a report matching the location of where Davis was shot. Davis was in town for Saturday’s game at Drexel University, which his Tigers won ,69-65. He did not disappoint his hometown crowd, turning in a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Following the game, the former Neumann-Goretti student, according to published reports, attended a family outing, During Tuesday’s Colonial Athletic Association teleconference, Towson head men’s basketball coach Pat Skerry announced that the senior forward and co-captain will miss the remainder of the season, “His health is fine, Skerry said during the call. “He’ll be able to play next year overseas, but he won’t play the rest of this season. He’s been a leader for us and a good role model for our guys. We are forever grateful for John. He’s done a lot of more for our program than what we were ever able to do for him. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms. John Pollono’s latest play focuses on a group of women in a blue-collar family struggling to rise above their means. ing the last two or so years. Because the writing has taken off so much, I’ve been so busy. Especially writing features and working in TV. Then this acting job came along and I kind of lucked into it. And I’m a big fan of the show, but I haven’t been actively pursuing acting as much. And sometimes that’s what happens when you don’t actively pursue something, you end up getting the opportunities. That was certainly the case here. It’s been really fun. It’s a great set, I mostly work with Sterling [Sterling K. Brown] on that show and he’s just awesome. The way I originally met and knew him was seeing him in plays. And there are a lot of playwrights who write for the show.

KENYATTA continued from page 1 Ward leaders push their party’s official slate of endorsements to voters. However, historically, in primary elections where Democrats and Republicans run against their own kind, ward leaders take endorsements into their own hands. Let’s say someone wants to get involved in ward-level politics. Who would dare make political rivals with their own councilman who they’d have to work with going forward? Reached by PW (SPR’s sister publication) on Tuesday, Johnson chuckled at that very question. “For me, it’s all about public service, he said. “At the end of the day, beyond the

CARDELLA continued from page 1 not being radical here. We’ve given up on bringing this state into the 21st century. But for starters, how about Pennsylvania entering the 20th century? Here’s just one example of the state’s bizarre law. We watched the recent Super Bowl in a bottle shop on East Passyunk Avenue. The shop sells wine and beer. Since it doesn’t sell food, patrons may bring in their own or have the food delivered. So far, so good. Let’s say, you have a few folks in your group drinking wine. The store sells wine by the bottle, so you figure you can purchase a couple to get you through the vision of seeing NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell handing the Super Bowl Trophy to Tom Brady again. However, if you buy a bottle of wine in the store, the law says that you can’t drink it in the store. You may only drink wine purchased by the glass. No doubt this is the result of a compromise between those who favor privatization and those who worry about the multiple constituencies that would offend. This is the kind of thing that gives compromise a bad name ‌ A showdown is on the horizon in Philadelphia, and I’m not referring to the soda tax fight. There is little doubt in my mind that President Trump will cut off federal funding to sanctuary cities such as Philadelphia. I’m sure that such a move would prompt testing the funding cutoff in court. Anyone who tells you they know how a judge would rule in such a situation is blowing smoke at you. Lawyers will tell you no one knows how a court will decide. Forget for a moment whether you back the mayor’s pro-sanctuary city stance or you are against it. If a cutoff in funding is upheld, Philadelphia would lose big bucks and I don’t think we’re going to try and get it back by increasing the soda tax, even if by then, it hasn’t been tossed by the court. This dark cloud on the horizon is already being noticed by Council President Darrell Clarke. Clarke is already hinting that he

would be in favor of complying with the feds. Kenney remains adamantly opposed to what he considers “cavingâ€? to the demands of the president. Until now, Philadelphia’s status as a Sanctuary city has not generated much heat. Also, it is important to note that Kenney and City Council have had a lovefest compared to some past relationships. But the reality is that absorbing or replacing the loss of funds could change all of that. Philadelphia, like most big cities, can’t afford to lose federal funding. Would voters stand firm in providing sanctuary for refugees if it means the city making financial sacrifices? And if an expected outcry from their constituents would ensue, how would members of Council react? Stay tuned. ... The state Senate has voted to make abortions legal for up to only 20 weeks rather than the current 24-week period. As of this writing, Wolf says that he would veto such a measure if it came to his desk. Let’s be honest. Prolife groups will not be satisfied until abortion is completely banned (although some would make exceptions in the case of rape or incest or life of the mother). It seems evident that the change would really be about what recent changes in other states are about — making it more difficult to get an abortion. The supporters of the change claim that technological advances over the years show that a fetus is now viable outside the womb at 20 weeks rather than 24. But there is no scientific evidence to support their argument. Maybe that’s why the bill was approved by the state Senate without any testimony from medical experts. And as such, the bill is just another example of politicians distorting science to support their agenda. ‌ There have always been a lot of reasons to hate the Philadelphia Parking Authority. But the recent investigative reports in the Inquirer about top officials grabbing big bucks by compiling huge amounts of comp time just boggles the mind. And you thought you couldn’t be surprised about anything the PPA has done in the past. ‌ A>@

f Earl Groom Jr. had fulfilled his initial desire to become an architect, he would have revelled when looking skyward in planning and executing lofty designs. We have what we’d like to accomplish, and

B?<;IJOB;I then we have God saying it’s his will that’s going to move us at the right moment. Through the impressive record — which he dedicated to his mother, Ethel M. Groom, who died in 1998 — the confident chronicler explores the virtue of writing “from the inside out. Groom believes everyone will identify with at least one element of the album’s contents. Enamored with the thought of reaching new heights through music, Groom finds it apt that he has looked to his allegiance to religion to scale any barriers to success. “I wake up each day, and that’s a miracle, right? he said. “People often lack perspective with respect to what they have, and I’m just trying to prove that if you persist, you’re going to have fruits come from your labors. As his efforts have begun to bear rewards, Groom has grown even more fond of the care and consideration that one must give to a passion, noting the constant pursuit of a goal will make the actualization of it that much more amazing. With his age as proof of his patience, he looks forward to pushing the thinking that age is just a number and that, as he said twice in explaining his quest for stardom, the cream always rises

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

to the top. “You must, must, must, must, must believe in yourself, Groom said of never wavering from the possibilities inherent within a dream. “And when you find the means to give that vision even more power and direction, don’t you dare think about lapsing into old ways of thinking about whether it’s all worth it. You owe it to yourself to know that you’re on the road to greatness through God. THE JERSEY CITY native said that as the youngest of three children, he always wanted the lion’s share of attention to go to him, with music eventually replacing architectural interests as that which could build his esteem and cause a few curious ears to bend his way. Realizing as a high school sophomore that tunes would help to tout his talent, he set himself to wondering how he could situate himself in the creative universe, with Los Angeles eventually proving an irresistible lure. “It can be so time-consuming to find out what is right for you, Groom said of the struggle to gain stability in professional pursuits, friendships, and relationships. His 15-year West Coast residency yielded

him acting opportunities as well. . “For me, I think we’re all on a little roller coaster ride known as life, and you have to be very discerning as you apply yourself to situations and fight through predicaments. Music will forever be the majestic means for the performer to be a diligent deliverer of positive messages and has allowed him to land gigs for, among others, the Los Angeles-based Shrine Auditorium and The Wiltern, the New York-situated 13th Street Theatre, and Philadelphia destinations Broad Street Ministry, Chris’ Jazz Cafe, The Raven Lounge, and World Cafe Live. While those sites have helped him to actualize his childhood dream of having ample attention come his way, Groom has realized their greater benefit, namely, the opportunity to give praise for his lot in life. “It’s great to convey your personal journey and realizations through songs, he said. “I’m especially blown away by my chances to try to comfort people no matter their situation. That’s a natural byproduct, I’d say, of writing from the heart. We all know the right thing to do, of that I’m sure, and it’s those detours that get us in trouble. If music can be a reminder that

you got to go on, you know I’ll be opening my mouth until the day I die. Whenever he utters heartfelt encouragement, Groom figures to find inspiration for future releases, as he noted his catalog is “quite extensive. Not looking to rush beyond this brainchild, he considers “God Has a Way a celebration of the wonders of working on oneself in the search for growth. He feels, creatively, that this is his “Thriller, a reference to Michael Jackson’s landmark 1982 release. Having called South Philly home for a considerable time, he appreciates its tight-knit nature and certainly could see observations made from his time here finding their way into his work. “No matter where you find inspiration, run with it, Groom said. “Let yourself be the one who determines how much you invest in your calling. Look at me. Fifty-six years old, and I’m not giving up on anything. A>@ Visit cdbaby.com/cd/earlgroomjr. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Gina’s Vegetarian Bean Soup

Getting your nutritional kicks

F

ans of frigid temperatures have not been able to enjoy many bragging rights this winter, but perhaps Mother Nature is just practicing patience. If the matriarch does decide to dish out some harsh elements on her children, Gina Lucas will have you reaching for a comforting bowl of her Vegetarian Bean Soup. The Passyunk Square resident certainly knows how unifying such a concoction can prove, saying that preparers should enjoy her submission with a friend on a cold day. With such a sentiment, even lovers of warm weather might find themselves wishing for a polar vortex.

n Irishman and a Palestinian open a bar in Philadelphia... No, this is not the start of a joke. It’s the beginning of a beautiful friendship, one that grew over the next two decades and would come to define the spirit of one of the city’s most successful bars. Beyond the foamy pints and mixed drinks, the laughter and the music, the friendship flourished and endured as a testament to the goodwill of men brought together in the City of Brotherly Love. Wajih Abed, the handsome, forever-smiling gentleman from Ramallah on the West Bank of Israel, and his business partner, Fergus Carey, the rogue from Dublin. Wajih and Fergie — everyone knows them by their first names. The flowers and condolences began arriving at Fergie’s Pub on Sansom Street in Center City almost immediately after a sign went up on the front door on Feb. 4, announcing that Wajih had succumbed to cancer of the larynx at the age of 71. “He’s leaving a huge hole, said Fergie. “He’s leaving a lot of friends. In the stack of snapshots that Fergie showed me in the pub’s second-floor office, there are scores of family members and barroom acquaintances hugging Wajh, a broad smile beneath his trimmed mustache. Fergie might be wearing a tattered T-shirt and shorts; Wajih, looking like Omar Sharif, impeccably dressed. “He was the ultimate host, Fergie said. “He brought old-school class to this place. Wajih had come to America as a teenager, already married with a wife and child he’d left behind until he got settled. He started selling carpets on the street in the early ’60s while

his older brother managed the old Middle East Restaurant on Chestnut Street. “I remember when he came to Bookbinder’s [the former seafood restaurant on 15th Street] looking for a job, any job,â€? said Constance Bookbinder, the owner’s wife. “My husband, Sam, offered him a job as a bar boy. Eventually, he let him make drinks.â€? He was only 18. “I was working at Wanamaker’s at the time,â€? Bookbinder said. “I’d come to the restaurant after work, all dressed up, and sit at the bar and talk with Wajih all night until Sam could have dinner. Then we’d get a table and Wajih would send over a drink — orange juice and gin, mostly gin.â€? There were other jobs. He bought a couple of pizzerias in Jersey. His wife joined him, they had more kids (“He sent all of them to college on a bartender’s salary,â€? Bookbinder said.), and then she passed away. Fergie — already a well-known bartender at McGlinchey’s, just down the street from Bookbinder’s — first met Wajih in 1994, and the two decided to go into business together, renting a space on Sansom. “It wasn’t until we were walking back from Michael Singer’s [the rental agent] that we decided what to call the place,â€? said Fergie. “I suggested the name, and then we put an American flag and an Irish flag out front. He joked that we should put up a Palestinian flag, too, but we never got around to that‌ “We opened on a shoestring, but the place was an immediate success,â€? Fergie continued. “My parents were so happy he was my friend and my partner. He was 49 and I was 31. Me and my friends, we thought he was ancient. He was such the father figure to everybody.â€? The years passed, the Guinness and Jameson poured freely, the bar’s rep as one of the city’s best Irish pubs soared. Wajih’s influence could be seen in small oddities around the bar: the Italian wedding soup on the menu of an Irish bar, Celine Dion on the jukebox. But more importantly, there was his smile from behind the bar, greeting firsttimers and reg’lars alike. It was the smile of a man who came to America, earned an honest living, raised a family and built an enduring, beautiful friendship. “He loved,â€? said Fergie, “and he was loved.â€? hen one acquires distinction in the restaurant business, an outsider might feel tempted to believe the individual will eventually rest on laurels and look to coast through his or her career. With a rĂŠsumĂŠ that includes affiliations with the Garces Group and Starr Restaurants, Juan Lopez-Fernandez could count as a candidate for such consideration if he were not blessed with a desire to improve each day on the job. Since Sept. 9, he has been striving to strengthen his culinary journey as one of four owners, including wife Mallory, behind On Point Bistro. “I just love presenting delicious food and seeing the looks on happy faces,â€? the 35-year-old said inside his Point Breezesituated establishment. “I really enjoy what I’m doing, so that’s a very good thing, especially with this place since we had wanted something to call our own for a long time.â€? Dubbing the dining destination “an American bistro with a Mexican touch,â€? Lopez-Fernandez loves that the location has helped him to honor his heritage and to establish a rapport with community members. “The idea has been there for so long that we know what it takes to appeal to people,â€? the chef said. “I think that passion is consistent throughout our menu.â€? Lopez-Fernandez elected to share the recipe for On Point Bistro’s Fresh Corn Pancakes and the steps for a delectable honey corn butter, as proof of that enduring diligence. “It’s very popular,â€? he said of the item that he has listed under the brunch favorites section. “Ordinary pancakes are fun, sure, but it’s nice to taste something different.â€?

DIRECTIONS: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, combine all the dry ingredients, and gently mix them. Melt the butter in a medium saute pan before combining it with all the wet ingredients. Mix until they are completely combined. In a large mixing bowl, combine the wet and dry ingredients, and mix until no clumps are left. They will produce a smooth liquid consistency. Let the batter rest for 24 hours before using. When cooking each pancake, allow for three minutes on one side and one minute on the other.

DIRECTIONS FOR HONEY CORN BUTTER: Cut the corn off its cob. Melt the butter in a medium saute pan, add the corn, and cook for approximately 10 minutes on medium heat. ou may not know his name, but you’ll definitely know his voice. Gary Michael Cappetta was the man who introduced thousands of professional wrestling matches. He worked for the World Wide Wrestling Federation, now known as World Wrestling Entertainment, the National Wrestling Alliance, which went on to be known as World Championship Wrestling, announced the first-ever match to be broadcast on ESPN when he was with the American Wrestling Alliance and still occasionally throws on the suit to announce special matches across the country. Cappetta, born and raised in Central New Jersey, has been all over the world announcing wrestling matches, but it’s fair to say his roots are in the Philadelphia area. He got his start announcing wrestling in Wildwood at Convention Hall, but it wasn’t long before he was announcing in front of nearly 20,000 rabid fans at the Philadelphia Spectrum. “I was just a ring announcer, I would announce the name, weight and place they’re from, Cappetta said. “If you watch an hour show, I was on maybe 1 minute, 45 (seconds) but I’ll meet a lot of fans, and I believe I had the connection with them. I was around a long time, and I am a wrestling fan. Cappetta was just a ring announcer, but he happens to be one of the most wellknown ring announcers and for many wrestling fans, he was the soundtrack to the beginning of some of the greatest matches in wrestling history. On his very first night, he was able to announce his all-time favorite wrestler and the man he referred to as his hero, Bruno Sammartino. He was front and center in Germany when Mick Foley lost his ear in a historical match against Big Van Vader. In fact, Cappetta helped the now-WWE star retrieve the ear following the match. Cappetta has done it all, has seen it all and has plenty of stories about his days in the strange but always entertaining business that draws great ratings on television and has for decades. On Feb. 19, at 3:05 p.m. (the start time an

homage to what time wrestling would start on TBS in the 1980s and 1990s), Cappetta will put on his one-man stage show “Bodyslams! & Beyond. The show is based off his successful autobiography, Bodyslams: Memoirs of a Wrestling Pitchman. The show will take place at the CSz Comedy Club, 2030 Sansom St. FOR CAPPETTA, WHO was always entertaining in the ring, whether he was setting the stage for the main event on pay-per-view, or pitching next month’s list of matches during his days at the Philadelphia Spectrum, this is another chance to entertain and give back. The highlight of the show will be Cappetta talking about his career, and, hence the name, he promises the show will go beyond where his book takes you. The part Cappetta is looking forward to the most is helping independent wrestling promotions. As part of his nine-show tour, which opens in Philadelphia, Cappetta will have an independent wrestling outfit on hand, including stars of the promotion. In Philadelphia, wrestlers from the Monster Factory, based in Paulsboro, N.J., will be there

to introduce themselves to the fans. “I think independent wrestling is the lifeblood of the sport, Cappetta said. “They’ll be there, people can interact with them. They can talk about upcoming (shows). I want to give back, and independent wrestling is the future stars of professional wrestling. But the main event will be Cappetta’s stories. He’d love to give you a quick preview of what he’ll be talking about, but that’s not entirely possible. A pro wrestling historian, Cappetta has spent enough time around the sport to pick up tricks from the guys he announced. They would feed off the audience and after feeling them out, they’d do their best to give the crowd exactly what they want. That’s very similar to what Cappetta will be doing during his tour. “Stories like Mick Foley’s ear and the time I woke up and saw wrestlers in a knife fight in England are my greatest hits and they’re stories people always want to hear, Cappetta said. “I have an outline for the show, but once I get up there, I’m going to feed off the audience. The good news is Cappetta will probably have a story for every wrestling fan. “I worked for the WWWF and WWF, and then I was on the road with WCW, Cappetta, who doubles as a school teacher in New Jersey, said. “I have stories with Mick Foley, I traveled in a car with the Undertaker. Some of the best stories are ones when you’d have three wrestlers in a car, traveling together. In WCW, it was in my contract that I would travel alone because at times, I needed my space, but there were times when guys would travel with me, and those are where the best stories come from. The show will be a great way for historians to learn a little more about the sport. And if you’d like more than just the oneman show, Cappetta is offering a bonus plan. Tickets to the show are $20, and for a $40 fee, you can gain early entry into the show, take part in a meet and greet with Cappetta, get a copy of his book, and enjoyother perks. A>@

The curious case of Nelson Agholor 2/D3 A>/2/@=

verybody loved him. Why wouldn’t they? Nelson Agholor was a superstar at the University of Southern California, ending his career there with more than 3,500 allpurpose yards and 24 touchdowns in his career with the Trojans. The NFL regarded him as a polished wide receiver capable of making an instant impact as a rookie in 2015. When the Eagles drafted him with the 20th overall pick that year, Agholor brought with him to Philadelphia poise, confidence and, the scouting report read, the kind of explosiveness to thrive as a catch-andrun big-play-maker in the league. That was three years ago. Seems like a lot longer than that, right? Agholor has not been a big playmaker for the Eagles in his two seasons. He’s caught 59

Does as a rookie. he fit at all? Last year, Agholor ran into problems off the The Eagles have made it very clear that they field just as the team ended its spring practice intend to surround quarterback Carson Wentz sessions. He struggled through the preseason, with more weapons. Is Agholor in the plans? and then rebounded with the best game of his “My focus is to go out every day and have a career – four receptions, 57 yards, including a great practice and stack them one on top of the pretty 35-yard touchdown catch from Wentz in other and get myself ready to play to the best the win over Cleveland. Then Agholor followed of my ability each and every week, Agholor with four more catches against Chicago.

Maybe, just maybe, he was turning a corner. It didn’t happen. Agholor wasn’t a consistent contributor in the offense in 2016. He was able to get open often enough, but he wasn’t consistent catching the football. Worse, he made some critical mental mistakes at crucial times. Agholor was even benched for a game against Green Bay to get his “head straight. So as the Eagles evaluate their wide receiving corps, what do they see in Agholor? “He’s a talented player who just needs to relax and go out and play football, head coach Doug Pederson said. “He’s got to get back to that. Agholor is likely to be back with the Eagles, even as they upgrade the position. He should have a chance to reverse his fortunes in the summer. It could be his last chance in Philadelphia. If he doesn’t connect and take the leap forward, it would be a costly swing and miss for the Eagles in their draft history, a first-round pick whom they desperately need to step up his game.
