‘I Love a Parade’
am humming the tune “I Love a Parade” as I write this column. No, silly, not the city’s victory parade for the Eagles that occurred almost two weeks ago. Although it was magical. I’m talking the big military parade that’s coming up at the behest of our commander-inchief. Yep, President Trump has ordered the Pentagon to stage an enormous parade. And, of course, I’ve got some inside information on the spectacle. You and the other Trump-haters may laugh, but this will be a parade with a purpose. The president intends to show North Korea’s Premier Kim Jong Il that not only is his button bigger than Kim’s, but so is his missile. Trump could’ve saved American taxpayers millions of dollars by dropping his parade plans and just showing Kim the size of his hands. But wait, my inside scoop… While saluting the troops, Trump plans to flash proof of his five military deferments. The Trump family crest consists of two bone spurs crossed with yellow stripes and in the left-hand corner, the president’s lucky symbol “4F...” By the way, is our government open or shutdown today? The politicians in Washington have threatened a shutdown more often See CARDELLA, page 7>>

a tour bus can get to become an exhausting routine rather quickly, but for this South Philly resident it’s a dream opportunity. He is one of the cast members in the national tour of “A Chorus Line.” The first leg of the tour opened in California last month, and will conclude in September. For Ruggieri, who
calls Lower Moyamensing home, the opportunity to play Mike marks his debut on the national tour circuit. The experience has included learning the choreography from Baayork Lee, who has performed in a dozen Broadway shows and created the role of Connie in “A Chorus Line.” See RUGGIERI, page 4>>

<<Continued from page 1 “It’s such a great feeling to be taught by the original choreographer. She is so iconic. It’s an amazing, amazing feeling, Ruggieri, 28, said. The actor may not have Broadway experiences on his acting resume, but being on stage is far from a new experience for the former University of the Arts student. His credits include playing the role of Sam in “Ghost, Chris in “Miss Saigon and appearing in the Walnut Street Theatre’s version of “South Pacific. His current role is quite different from the rest. “[“A Chorus Line] is not like other shows I’ve done, he said, “Everyone on the line is a lead. It’s about everyone telling a story of what it takes to be in the business. Besides spending February traveling to Indiana, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Michigan, the commitment involved several weeks of intense training in New York City. Many of the rehearsal sessions went from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. The longer sessions were part of what is referred to as tech week in which the performers get in costume and a do a runthrough with the band and sets. “It was a lot, Ruggieri said, “It gave us an idea of what it was going to be like when we open. The show opened Jan. 26 in California. Some stops are one-day visits while other stops include multiple performances. Later this month, Feb. 23

‘Everyone on the line is a lead. It’s about everyone telling a story of what it takes to be in the business,’ Andre Ruggieri said of his role in the national tour of ‘A Chorus Line.’ through 25, there will be three shows at the Scranton Cultural Center in Scranton. The longer stops may include a chance to check out some of the scenery, but the main focus is on entertaining crowds across the country. Ruggieri, who spent part of his childhood participating in classes at Jason Douglas DanceAdelphia, 1100 Snyder Ave., will be taking his talents overseas in September. The cast found out about the second day of rehearsals that the tour will include performances in Japan. “It’s awesome. he said. “For me it’s the most rewarding show that I have
ever been in. There are likely to be other exciting opportunities down the road as Ruggieri plans on being on stage for years to come. Whether he gets cast in another national tour, hits the Philly theater circuit or ends up on the biggest stage of them all – Broadway – remains to be seen. “Right now, I like where I am, he said. “Broadway would be my ultimate goal.

REMEMBER WHEN
Steering back to the Steer Inn
E
very once in a while we sit back and talk about those neighborhood favorites from decades ago, wishing that they were still around today. Some may drive past the CVS on South Broad Street, and suddenly, out of the blue, say “remember when that was the Steer Inn. If South Philadelphians wanted a hamburger, this was the place to go. We are talking long before the days of Five Guys, Smashburger and other chains that are popular today. This was prime real estate, located footsteps
from Municipal/JFK Stadium, FDR Park, the Aquarama and the old South Philadelphia drive-in. Today, the area is better known as the South Philadelphia sports complex – home of the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. They are the present and future. The Steer Inn, on the other hand, serves as a delicious memory that is likely making many reading this article hungry for a juicy burger. Photo provided by Philly Photos and Video

CARDELLA: Random thoughts
<<Continued from page 1 than the Board of Health dealing with a deli owner on notice with mouse droppings violations. ... I don’t know about you, but I’m getting tired of seeing the steakhouse prices for Japanese Kobe beef. I like the fact that it’s tender. I’d be tender too if they massaged me every day, fed me five meals a day, sent me on a cruise to Tahiti, and had Mandy Moore tuck me in at night. In fact, for what it costs to eat Kobe beef, you could probably get Mandy to at least sing you a lullaby. ... I don’t know Meek Mill. I only got halfway through listening to one of his rap songs before I switched to Sinatra. But the judge sentencing him to prison for minor violations of his parole ought to quit the court and become the new host of “Judge Judy.â€? Yeah, I know he got involved in a minor scuffle with a fan and he exceeded the speed limit on another occasion. Dear strict law and order advocate: You ever lie about the charitable deductions on your taxes or gotten a gotten a “handicappedâ€? parking sticker under false pretenses? I thought so. Meek gets two years in jail? A good thing he didn’t intentionally tilt the pinball machine he was playing or who knows what the judge would’ve slapped him with. But make no mistake about it. My argument isn’t about treating a wealthy rap artist unfairly. This is about the unknown folks languishing in jail. The folks who are not a threat to you or me. This is about the unfair parole system that plays “gotchaâ€? with their lives instead of focusing on keeping them OUT of prison. Why should you care about Mill? Because if the system can get away with putting a guy with fame and power behind bars, just think of how many powerless people this joke of a parole system victimizes. And you – it’s costing you tax dollars. ‌ I just asked Alexa if we can have sex tonight and she answered, “I’ve got a headache. ‌â€? I know I should be cowering under my bed hiding from MS-13, but what the hell does that gang have to do with granting Dreamers safe haven in
this country and a path to citizenship? In order to qualify for DACA protection, you can’t be a member of a gang. Dreamers are not members of MS-13, no matter how hard the White House tries to intentionally mix up the two groups. And before White House Chief of Staff John Kelly suggested that some of the otherwise qualified people who’ve not registered for the program are “lazy asses,â€? he should’ve checked his boss in the Oval Office who doesn’t show up for work until 11 a.m. and spends most of his weekends playing golf with his buddies‌ My urologist just told me that I don’t need to get PSA tests anymore. Apparently, I’m so old that even if I got prostate cancer, I’d die from something else before it killed me. Reporter-turned-politician aims to represent 184th district By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
E
lizabeth Fiedler knew it wouldn’t be easy. “We got health insurance through my job,” Fiedler said, “so that’s one thing that was a really a challenge for me was deciding whether to run.” The “we” is Fiedler and her two young sons, Gus, 3, and 8-month-old Louis. “I personally really struggled with the health-care system, and that’s something that I’ve heard from a lot of people across South Philly at community meetings,” Fiedler said. “[It’s] is a struggle to get good health care.” Fiedler, who is gunning for Bill Keller’s seat representing the 184th district in the state House of Representatives (Keller announced last week he would not seek re-election), is not a single-issue candidate, but she did call health care one of the “big reasons” she was motivated to run. Currently, her sons are covered through CHIP and Medicaid. “I think that in this country all of us – every single person regardless of where we live, regardless of how much money we have – we should all have access to high quality health care,” she told the Review. “I want that for myself and my family and for all of my neighbors and every person.” If you talk to Fiedler, you might recognize her voice; she was a politics and community affairs reporter for WHYY, Philadelphia’s local NPR-affiliate newsradio station. Her old job gave her the ability to get out into the city, meet real people and talk about the issues. “It was a really great opportunity to talk with so many people across Philadelphia, across South Philly about what’s working for them, about what’s not working, what they would like to see government doing.” Opioid addiction is another key issue for Fiedler. She said she heard heartbreaking stories from her neighbors about family struggles with opioid addiction. Many residents asked her to make it a focus of her campaign, so she did. “I very strongly believe that we need to treat drug addiction from a public health perspective – not solely

Elizabeth Fiedler, right, meets with residents of the 184th Legislative District in South Philadelphia. from law enforcement,” she said. “We need to recognize that these folks who are struggling with drug addiction are people.” At one point during the phone interview, Fiedler got a bit choked up when she recalled some of the drug-related stories residents have told her. “Sorry, I’m here,” she said, apologizing for the brief breakdown. “I was just thinking about one of the women I spoke with who really was – she got really emotional when she was talking to me.” But it begs the question: How does Fiedler feel about safe-injection sites? She wouldn’t give a definitive yes or no, but made it clear she was open to the idea. “I want to see Philadelphia become a national leader in the way that we ad-
dress drug addiction,” she said, “and I think [the implementation of safeinjection sites] is one way that could happen.” Fiedler is from Bloomsburg and didn’t make the move into the city until 2004. Some may think of city folks and those who live in rural areas as two completely different types of people, but Fiedler doesn’t see it that way. “There’s so many similarities,” she said about the two different worlds. “Struggles to find jobs that pay a wage that folks can support their family on and not worrying about paying the bills every month. Struggles to find jobs that pay a living wage and health care, absolutely. Access to health care [is one thing] I hear from people out [in the rural parts of the state] all the time and I hear from people in South Philly.” According to Fiedler, there are two
major challenges she faces every day as a politician who’s running for office for the first time. The first is fundraising. Her campaign, she said, raised $53,000 in 2017. “I came from working class,” Fiedler said. “I’m not rich. I’m not used to $53,000. Like, just that number has so many zeros.” Fiedler said she found the idea of raising enough money to run a strong campaign “a little bit daunting,” and talked about the awkwardness of calling people she hasn’t talked to in awhile in an attempt to get them to donate money. “It’s tough to ask for money,” she said. The second major challenge she faces is maintaining “balance” in her private and public lives. “I also have a husband and two little
kids,” she said. “Finding some time on a daily basis between my professional life as a candidate and my family – it’s a work in progress. … It can be a challenge finding that balance and making sure that [you need to] spend time with your family to get good quality [family] time and have some time to rest also.” Louis, who was 3 months old when his mom announced her candidacy, is far too young to understand what’s going on. His older brother, however – he gets it. Kind of. “Gus is much more aware of what’s going on,” Fiedler said. “I’ve tried to explain to him why I’m doing this and I think some of it he really gets. He’s 3, but he understands equality and justice and whether things are fair and so in his own sort of 3-year-old old way, I think he does understand.”

Seeking the Top Docs in South Philly
he South Philly Review changes things up every once in awhile with a special themed issue spotlighting the people, places and things that make South Philly what is today. Poplar editions such as the Spring Guide/Readers’ Choice Awards, Difference Makers, Rising Stars and Mummers Guide are all planned for later this year. Top Businessmen and Businesswomen of South Philly were added to the rotation in 2017, and will return, as well. Now we are adding one more to the growing
list: The Top Docs of South Philly. Face it, every South Philly resident needs a doctor, dentist or specialist to help fulfill the “healthy part of the “Happy and Healthy New Year greeting. Who would you recommend and why? What makes this person stand out from the rest? It can be a primary care physician, cardiologist, OB/GYN, surgeon, or even the local ER doc. We are looking for more than just a name. The final list of docs will be based on nominations from you, our loyal readers and social media
followers. Include as many important details about this person as possible. All of the entries will be reviewed by the SPR staff, with the final list appearing in an upcoming issue. The only rule is the doctor must have an office or residence in South Philly. Please include the doctor’s name, name of the practice (if necessary), office address and phone number. Include your name and contact info, as well, in case we have any questions. The date for the Top Docs of South Philly issue will be announced soon.

Second State Press makes mail an art form Monthly event encourages creative letter writing and artistic collaboration By Melissa Komar SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
I
n this day and age, when communicating with family and friends can boil down to a four-letter acronym to express one’s mood – “TGIF” (Thank God it’s Friday) – to autogenerated phone declines – “I’m in a meeting, call you right back,” – Second State Press is offering, if not reviving, a more traditional way to converse, and it’s not cutting any corners. Every second Sunday, the Kensington-based nonprofit communal printmaking workshop will host Mail Art and Letter Writing Social, a free, public event aimed at pressing pause on technology and putting a pen – or whatever writing utensil or decorative apparatus you so choose – at its studio space. The first social was held on Sunday, Feb. 11, a perfect opportunity to be reflective and sip some tea due to the dreary weather conditions. South Philly resident and Second State Press member Adrienne O’Hanlon searched for a “letter writing” group without any luck when she moved to Philadelphia a couple years ago. In December, she approached the director about hosting one. “Adrienne O’Hanlon approached me with the idea to start a mail art group. She has been connected with artists around the country interested in this topic and approached me about holding meetings at SSP,” said Jenn McTague, co-founding executive director at Second State Press. “This fit right in line with our mission of creating a space to talk about art and building community.” February seemed the most fitting month to launch the initiative. “February is the best month for lettering writing because it combines Valentine’s Day and International Correspondence Writing Month,” O’Hanlon said. “With InCoWriMo, you make a promise to yourself to write and send a letter each day of the month.” A book artist by career, O’Hanlon brought a small clutch filled with half-finished projects to share. “This is a good way to keep my skills flowing,” she said. “It’s good to have a community to do it with to keep yourself honest and send letters out.” O’Hanlon spent some of the social jazzing up a info card from an event she had attended, which she wanted to share with a friend. “Mail art for me is like keeping a sketchbook for other artists,” said O’Hanlon as she added details to the card. Sisters and West Philly residents Juwanna Evans and Aapril Rice discovered the event on Facebook. “I’m a writer and I told myself this year

Below: Sisters Evans and Rice decorate hand-crafted letters during the first social hosted by Second State Press. I would get more artsy,” Evans said. “This allows me to not focus so much on writing and have fun with it.” Rice hoped her mail art would help make amends. “I’m having a disagreement with my significant other and hoping this card will make things better,” she said. “I think it’s more meaningful because it’s made from scratch.” South Philly resident and O’Hanlon’s fiance, Noam Berg, was incorporating music into the mail art. “I help tutor kids at Philly Folk Fest each summer and one of the kids plays mandolin and I do as well,” he said. “He sent me a letter and I’m replying with a letter and a song.” Berg was including a piece of sheet music for mandolin which he wrote a few years ago “to give him the challenge.” The social gave Berg a chance to catch up on correspondences and holiday cards, too. The event is BYO for supplies, but artists can swap or trade materials and papers. Tea “is offered as something to drink and enjoy while the artists are working and participants are welcome to bring other beverages with them,”
McTague said. For Second State Press, creating a community for artists to collaborate is key. “The goal, from an organizational standpoint, is to bring artists together to share ideas, discuss art, and potentially collaborate,” McTague said.
Second State Press, 1400 N. American St., B103, will host Mail Art and Letter Writing Social every second Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m. The event is free and open to everyone. For more details, visit secondstatepress.org, call 215-232-2110 or email info@secondstatepress.org.

he word about East Passyunk Restaurant Week typically starts spreading in January, right after the Center City version wraps. The buzz was slightly delayed this year as a result of the Philadelphia Eagles winning Super Bowl LII. Now that the celebration, Valentine’s Day and President’s Weekend have all passed, it’s time to start talking about food, more specifically where to eat during the sixth annual East Passyunk Restaurant Week. It starts on Monday, Feb. 26, and runs through Friday, March 9. There are 26 restaurants participating – four of which are first-timers. Participating restaurants are rolling out three-course menus for $15, $25 or $35 per person, not including tax and gratuity. Pam Zenzola, executive director of the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District, has been busy uploading the menus to the East Passyunk Restaurant Week website and getting the word out. It has included getting 2017 newcomers Barcelona Wine Bar, 1709 E. Passyunk Ave., and Pistola’s Del Sur, 1934 E. Passyunk Ave., both opened in 2017. Chef Nicholas Elmi, a former “Top Chef winner, is rolling out EPRW special menus at ITV, 1615 E. Passyunk Ave., for the first time. Chhaya Cafe, 1819 E. Passyunk Ave, chef/ owner V. Beuria is the other first-time participant. Zenzola said it wasn’t hard getting restaurants, including new ones, on board. “It wasn’t hard at all, she said. “We are like a big family down here. “How can I be involved? and “What can I do? are common responses. Restaurants along what many consider South Philly’s foodie row have earned national acclaim,
including being named one of the “Top 10 Foodie Streets in America by Food and Wine Magazine. With a wide range of options that include Italian, Mexican, Spanish tapas, Northern European, French and others, deciding where to go is not such an easy decision. The user-friendly EPRW website (eastpassyunkrestaurantweek.com) provides links to each of the participating establishments, what the special menu choices are and what nights it will be available. Noir, 1909 E. Passyunk Ave., Pub on Passyunk East, 1501 E. Passyunk Ave., Stogie Joe’s, 1801 E. Passyunk Ave., and Pistola’s are each offering separate lunch and dinner menus. This is the second year in which EPRW has been extended over 12 days after running as a weeklong event the first four years. “We have quarterly restaurant meetings, Zenzola said. “Quite a few of them said [last year] let’s go up to 12 days. It has been successful Other businesses along East Passyunk, including Manatawny Still Works, 1603 E. Passyunk Ave., help the team as an event sponsor. Rolling out the special menus on nights that may typically be slower, those nights suddenly are not. February and March also tend to be colder months in which residents may prefer eating at home. Zenzola said the Tuesday/Wednesday crowd over the next two weeks may be more like a Friday or Saturday night. Some people will look at one of the menus and say “I have to try that while others will decide this is the perfect time to try a place for the first time. Reservations may be required at many of the participating restaurants. Visit eastpassyunkrestaurantweek.com. Have food news to share? Email news@southphillyreview.com.

Queens of the Catholic League track The Neumann-Goretti girls team made program history at the Feb. 11 championship meet By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
I
magine trying to win an indoor track championship with a roster consisting of just nine girls. Yes, it may sound like an impossible task, but it can be done. Just ask the Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., indoor girls track team - the 2018 Catholic League champions. The Saints won the Feb. 11 event in convincing fashion - a 152-point performance. Cardinal O’Hara, the defending champs, finished a distant second with 85 points. Head coach Lincoln Townsend spent the regular season getting the girls mentally focused on the championship goal to the point where the entire team “expected it.” “When it happened. It wasn’t really a surprise,” he said. “We came into the season with it as one of our goals. One down, one to go.” The Saints’ rise to the top has been a work in progress that included finishing second in the 2017 PCL indoor championship. The East Passyunk Crossingbased squad finished second to O’Hara in that meet. When asked about the secret to the team’s success, Townsend simply responded, “I challenge them more mentally than physically.” It includes getting each of the girls to believe they can be the best at anything. In the past, the Saints had trouble competing in middle distance events such as the 800 and 4X800. This season, several girls answered the challenge, with junior Dasia Wilson’s first-place finish (2:18.98) leading the way. Freshmen teammates Sherisse Peterson (2:24.87) and Kimberly Johnson (2:30.48) followed in fourth and fifth, respectively. The Saints also claimed the top spot in the 4X800 (10:15.75) topping secondplace Cardinal O’Hara (10:46.14). Looking up and down the final meet results, it’s clear that Townsend is getting the most out of each member of the squad. There were several events in which the Saints swept the top two or three positions. In the 200, for instance, senior Sydni Townsend finished first (25.52), followed by sophomore Mykala Perry (25.77) and senior Eliza Brooks

(26.33). Freshman Imira Roussaw rounded out the top five (27.87). The 400 was another strong event for Neumann-Goretti as Townsend (57.09), Perry (57.83), Wilson (58.87) and Jones (1:02.40) recorded a one-two-three-four finish.
Townsend, who also won the 60meter hurdles (9.41), walked away with meet MVP honors. The standout performer also happens to be the coach’s daughter. While her Neumann-Goretti career is winding down, this standout performer still has
a bright future at the University of Pittsburgh where she will continue her athletic career. “My goal is to make sure every one of them gets a track and field scholarship to college,” the coach said. Brooks will be attending Virginia Military Institute. The Saints’ championship performance also included victories in the 4x200 (1:48.14) and 4X400 (4:06.15). Speaking of the 4x400, the unit of Wilson, Townsend, Brooks and Perry have the fastest time in the state this season at 3:49.05. While the Saints have plenty to celebrate this winter, Neumann-Goretti will soon switch gears and start preparing for the outdoor season where they are the defending City and PIAA AA champs. Winning is just the way of life at Neumann-Goretti. The girls basketball
team entered last night’s Catholic League semifinal against Archbishop Carroll riding a streak of back-to-back Catholic League crowns. Next month, the focus will shift to the pursuit of a fourth straight PIAA crown. The boys basketball team has a championship resume highlighted by seven PIAA Class AAA titles in eight seasons, and it includes the current streak of four in a row. “I think that we have so many AllAmericans walking around the school that it’s bound to rub off on each other,” the coach said. “You don’t want to be the team that falls short.” As far as his team’s success, Townsend said the girls “deserve everything that comes their way.” Neumann-Goretti will once again look to go the distance on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Penn State University, site of the indoor state championships.

EAGLES INSIDER
I
Let the off-season quarterback discussion begin The Eagles have an avalanche of riches at QB ... which means they do what, exactly?
t is the most-asked question you hear around the area, other than, you know, “Can you believe the Eagles won the Super Bowl?!?!!?” What is going to happen at the quarterback position for the Eagles? In case you haven’t heard, the Eagles are loaded at quarterback as the current roster stands. Carson Wentz is the franchise player, heading into his third NFL season, rehabbing torn ACL and LCL ligaments in his left knee. His timeline to return for 2018 hasn’t been established, but Wentz has expressed confidence in his ability to be ready on Sept. 6 for the Thursday night opener (Super Bowl winners get all the cool perks). Wentz led the league with 33 touchdown passes at the time of his injury and he has, in a very short period of time, el-
evated himself to the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks. The kid has it all, and the Eagles’ quarterback job is all his when he’s healthy. There is no disputing that. But the Eagles have a boatload of talent along with Wentz in the quarterback room. Nick Foles is coming off a historic three-game performance in the 2017 postseason, lighting up Atlanta and Minnesota before putting on a show of shows as he earned Most Valuable
Dave
Spadaro
Player honors in the Super Bowl LII win over New England with three touchdown passes and one touchdown reception, passing for 373 yards. The No. 3 quarterback is an intriguing prospect by the name of Nate Sudfeld, whom the Eagles added to the practice squad after he was released by Washington last September. Sudfeld was added to the 53-man roster midway through the season and then played three quarters of the regular-season finale against Dallas, completing 19 of 23 passes. Sudfeld was at least impressive enough in that game, combined with some Foles hiccups in games against Oakland and Dallas, to motivate reporters to ask head coach Doug Pederson if he would consider turning to Sudfeld in
the playoffs should Foles falter. Sounds dumb now, doesn’t it? Anyway, the Eagles have an avalanche of riches at quarterback. Which means they do what, exactly? The likely scenario is they stay put with what they have, and Foles and Sudfeld take all the practice reps through training camp and the Eagles prepare to start Foles in the regular-season opener should Wentz need more time to recover from his injury. That’s a pretty darn awesome place to be as far as the quarterback position is concerned looking ahead at this point in the offseason. But, you know, there are going to be variables. Teams are going to inquire about Foles, who has one year remaining on his contract. In a quarterbackneedy league, one in which Cleveland
offered Cincinnati second- and thirdround draft picks for quarterback A.J. McCarron (four career starts) in November, some team(s) out there is going to see if it can get its hands on Foles. The cost? That remains to be seen. Would the Eagles turn a deaf ear to any offer? Why would they? This team needs to make sure the quarterback position is ably manned for the start of ‘18 and any time that Wentz isn’t able to play, but they’ve also got other roster needs and only six draft picks (no picks in the second and third rounds in April). In other words, the Eagles are, as always, open for business. They are operating from a position of strength, and it’s an enviable spot for this football team to maximize.

ymir Montague’s biggest supporter? “My mom,” he said. “She’s everything to me. She’s really been behind me on everything….She’s really the biggest supporter that I have.” But Neumann-Goretti head basketball coach Carl Arrigale is probably a close second. “He’s really stepped up this year now that he’s a senior in a leadership role and he’s been really well-rounded,” said Arrigale. “He’s our leading scorer right now, and he does a little bit of everything for us. He defends, rebounds; he’s had a really, really good senior year.” The senior point guard verbally committed to Holy Family University on Jan. 29. “What went into that decision was that Coach RC [Kehoe] was being for real with me,” said Montague. “He’s been perfectly honest about my game, and he actually put time into recruiting me. [Holy Family has] been here since my sophomore year watching me throughout the JV season and watched me progress as a player, so I felt like that was the right decision to go there.” Arrigale also thinks it will be a good fit. “He probably could have held out and got a Division I scholarship at some point, but I think it could end up being a great, great choice for him,” he said. “I think he’ll fit in there both academically and athletically and the coaches made him feel like he’s part of their future and he felt real comfortable and he didn’t want to wait around and play the game. He just felt like it was right and that’s the place he wanted to spend the next four years.” One of Montague’s biggest mentors was Scoop Jardine, who is also
from South Philly and attended Neumann-Goretti. He went on to play for Syracuse University, and helped take the team to the Elite 8 in 2012. He was introduced to Jardine by a member of the Saints’ training staff. “He kind of took me under his wing,” Montague said of Jardine. “He was basically keeping my head together and keeping it straight and letting me know that it’s business.” Montague, a South Philly resident who grew up on 23rd and Jackson, has always been a skilled, physical player. However, this year he’s grown into a leadership MONTAGUE role, which is new for him. “He’s matured a lot this year,” Arrigale said. “We have three seniors and the other two guys are rather quiet and he kind of accepted the role of being the vocal guy and being a leader. That’s where he really stepped up. The last year he just laid back behind the seniors and just kind of did his thing. Got in, got out. He got out in front of these guys in that leadership role and he’s taking to being our best player and stuff like that, he’s taken the challenge on and he’s really accepted it and he’s done a great job.” “It was a tough task coming from last year being the sixth man off the bench,” Montague said. “[Coach Arrigale] knew I had it in me to [become a leader], so I just had to believe in myself to do it.” Neumann-Goretti lost a heartbreaker to St. Joseph’s Prep in the Catholic League Quarterfinals Friday night 54-40, in which Montague scored eight points. “We picked a bad night to have a bad game,” said Arrigale after the loss. “We played poorly on offense. It’s a shame it happened in a playoff game.” It was the first Catholic League quarterfinal loss and Catholic League home loss for the squad since 2008.
