he last presidency that had this rough a start was William Henry Harrison. Harrison died of pneumonia one month after his inauguration. In the case of the Tom Cardella Trump administration, the new president has shot himself in the foot so often, our last best hope is that his six-shooter is finally empty and some kind soul has hidden the rest of his ammunition. Can we just begin all over again? Is there a reset button in Washington, D.C.? But, of course, there is no reset button for a new president. And while new presidents are often tested — JFK and the Bay of Pigs disaster comes to mind — and survived, the odds are increasing every day in Vegas that Trump will not complete his first term in office. Place your bets. The administration has already lost its credibility. History shows that once credibility is lost, it is almost impossible to get it back. There is literally no one left in the Trump administration, especially the president, who can convince anyone that they are telling the truth. Truth may be the first casualty of war, and it has certainly been the first casualty of the Trump administration. None of us should be surprised. Candi-

So why is he going, you ask? Well, it’s a pretty big deal. Barnes and his teammates will be in Memphis May 10-15 for a very important chess match — Super Nationals, which takes place once every four years. Bregy, 1700 Bigler St., is one of several teams from across the country that received an invite to participate. As one can imagine, Barnes is pretty excited about the upcoming journey. “It’s going to be a great opportunity to play against other kids. It’s going to be a really good tournament,â€? he said. But before they can start thinking about boarding a plane, several team members, including Barnes, will be traveling by bus to Lancaster for a state competition taking place March 10-12. Coach Karen O’Hara, who is an eighth-grade teacher at the school, shares the excitement of her players. “This is an unbelievable experience for them,â€? she said. “Some of them have never been away.â€? Of course, like most overnight trips, there are travel expenses that the Bregy team is responsible for paying. There is a gofundme page (gofundme.com/sendbregy-to-state-a-nationals) set up to help cover the costs. O’Hara, who enjoys playing the game herself, said they are looking to raise about $3,000, which will help pay for lodging and travel.

CHESS IS EXTREMELY popular at Bregy, as some 40 members, ranging from grades second to eighth, gather three mornings a week from 7:45-8:30 to play games. he Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Shubert Organization present the Broadway Philadelphia run of the hit musical The Bodyguard as part of the show’s first U.S. tour. The show runs at the Academy of Music through Feb. 26, and stars Grammy Award-nominated Deborah Cox as Rachel Marron, the role created by the late Whitney Houston in the 1992 film, along with television star Judson Mills in the role of the bodyguard Frank Farmer. The show revolves around Farmer, a former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, who is hired to protect superstar Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge, but they don’t expect to fall in love. “Kevin Costner played the role in the movie, and I’m often compared to him, Mills said. “It’s hard not to use some of the things Kevin used in the film to bring the character to life, but I did get some help from Larry Kasdan (who wrote the Oscar-nominated film). He gave me some pointers on how to approach the role. “But once I digested all that, I decided to start from scratch and allow some elements from my own personality to slowly congeal as the relationships in the show were getting stronger. In any event, even as some people say I even sound like Kevin, I’m just glad they’re enjoying the show. Mills grew up just outside of Washington, D.C. in a little house in the woods built by George Washington before he was president. As a boy, Mills preferred athletics to acting, but in high school he had a drama coach who saw something in him that impressed her. “She had been an actress at one time and pushed me into doing some plays. I did and found I enjoyed them very much, Mill said. “From high school, I went to Barry University in Miami to major in theater. And after one year, I moved to New York and entered the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to better learn my craft. After school, he landed his first audition and spent three years on the soap opera, “As The World Turns. “That’s how it all started for me. I moved out to Los Angeles and have since done a great deal of television work. Aside from numerous guest-starring roles, Mills was a series regular alongside Chuck Norris on the action show, “Walker, Texas Ranger. Mills admits he never did a touring show before, so he’s finding some parts of it very daunting, like all the traveling, waking in a new city and starting over technically every week. “But it also keeps you fresh, which is good because as actors you have to remain open and aware since you never know what’s going to happen next. While this actor wouldn’t mind if more stage work came his way, he’s just waiting and very excited to see what happens next. He said, “I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to working on the stage more. But for the time being, I’m just trying to keep my options open and doing the best job I can. A>@ Comment@southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

@Sa^]\RW\U b] ¡9dSbQVW\U¸ To the Editor: On Saturday, Feb. 18, “Jane Roeâ€?, a/k/a Norma McCorvey, died at the age of 69 from heart failure. McCorvey was the plaintiff in the lawsuit that ended in the landmark 1973 Supreme Court decision, “Roe v Wade,â€? which permitted abortions during the first trimester of pregnancy. Ironically, McCorvey herself never had an abortion. In his extreme rant, (“Extreme Kvetchingâ€?), Tom Cardella takes issue with the proposed state law that would stop abortions for 20-week-old unborn babies. According to him, there is no scientific evidence that a baby with that gestational age is viable. There is evidence of 22-weekold babies surviving with special medical care, but Cardella insists that it is futile to try to save any baby (he keeps calling them “fetusesâ€?) that has not reached the legal 24-week cutoff. The problem with Cardella’s unsophisticated reasoning is that there are several ways to calculate the gestational age of the unborn child. When they do not know the exact date of conception, doctors calculate from the first day of the woman’s last menstrual period. That adds 14 days to the gestational age. Proponents of the bill claim correctly that, since the exact gestational age is not certain, the difference between 20 and 24 weeks is too close to make abortion an option. It is known already that a baby at 20 weeks can feel pain. How horrible to imagine how it feels to be dismembered during such an operation. McCorvey lived long enough to regret her part in the abortion decision. She became a born-again Christian and later converted

to Catholicism. She even became an antiabortion activist. The tragedy of her chaotic life story is that she died knowing that her case resulted in the deaths of millions of unborn children. May she rest in peace. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

The Trump record To the Editor: Barely three weeks into his term of office, the president has already established quite a record. Issuing an executive order banning Muslims from entering the country (an order ruled illegal by four out of four judges so far), pushing a commercial product (his daughter’s clothing line), “draining the swamp by appointing billionaires and multi-millionaires to his cabinet (many from Goldman-Sachs and many terribly unqualified), slandering the judiciary as a whole and specific judges as well, lies about the crowd size at his inauguration and about illegal voting on Nov. 8 (“3 to 5 million people voted illegally), settling a lawsuit against Trump University for $25 million (which he said he’d never do), not suing multiple women who’ve accused him of sexual abuse (which he said he would do), insulting some of our closest allies (Australia and Mexico) while not criticizing the leader of the tyrannical Russian state, not releasing his tax returns. .... This and much more in only three weeks! What more awaits the American people?

Building an alliance To the Editor: I applaud the North American Building Trades and President Trump for quickly setting a tone of cooperation and determination to move our country forward. Within the first few days of taking office, Trump invited leaders of the national unions that comprise the North American Building Trades to the White House for an important discussion on the nation’s deteriorating infrastructure. To Trump’s credit, he stated his administration’s commitment to funding major infrastructure improvement projects across the country and his desire to work with the Building Trades to accomplish the enormous task. Our country’s highways, roads, bridges, tunnels and sewer systems are in major need of repair and overhaul. The closure of the Delaware River Bridge that connects Pennsylvania and New Jersey as a result of a dangerous crack in the bridge’s steel foundation is all the evidence we in the region require to understand the immediacy of the need. The leaders of the Building Trades also

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m deserve our respect for setting aside political differences, accepting the president’s invitation, and showing a willingness to work with the new administration to get our national infrastructure and economy moving in the right direction. It was a great start to a relationship that could prove to be very productive for all of us. Al Taubenberger Philadelphia City Councilman (At-Large)

Beautiful words To the Editor: This letter is from the lady that wrote to Tom Cardella when he wrote about Cuba. But this letter is not about Cuba, It is about the lovely “Valentine for Fran (Feb. 9). It is so beautiful and full of love for each other that I have tears in my eyes. God bless both of you with many more years together with all of the health and happiness you deserve. BREGY CHESS continued from page 1 first-year team members. Like the others, she started out as a club participant. “I like it a lot, Taylor said. “I am just going to states this year. I still have a lot to learn. I am learning a lot of tricks and strategies. The Bregy squad has also competed against other teams from the School District of Philadelphia. Bregy finished fifth in the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess Middle School League standings with 15 points a half point behind Mitchell. Center Citybased Masterman claimed top honors with 24 points. They lost to the No. 4 seed in a recent semifinal match. Chess is one of the many After School Activities Partnerships programs being offered to Philadelphia students. The mission

is to develop high quality after-school activities and resources to empower youth and strengthen communities around the city. Eighth-grader Tyrone Robby is one of the many who looks forward to playing at school. “I have fun with all of my friends, he said. Like being part of a basketball, baseball or soccer team, the players celebrate after achieving something great. For Taylor, it came after achieving her first checkmate in a school district event, and the whole team congratulated her. With two more big events still to come, there will very likely be several more memorable stories to share down the road. A>@

CARDELLA continued from page 1 date Trump lied early and often during his successful campaign for the presidency. He continued his “creative untruths once in office. It is no wonder then that lying has become second nature for anyone representing the administration in interviews and news conferences and that a monstrous lie forced his national security adviser Michael Flynn to “resign recently. Every administration fudges the truth to make itself look good. But in just over a month the symbol of this administration should be Pinocchio. Trump is not Hitler, but in some ways, his presidency seems to be unraveling like two failed presidents — Richard M. Nixon and Lyndon Baines Johnson. In this columnist’s lifetime, both Nixon and Johnson were brought down by lies. Nixon’s presidency ended not because of Watergate, but because of Nixon’s attempted cover-up. The presidency of Johnson did not end with his decision not to run for re-election because of the Vietnam War, but because of the lies told to the American public about that war. It was during the Johnson presidency that the term “credibility gap became popular. The Trump Administration suffers from a credibility gap. Both presidencies were brought down, in part, by aggressive investigative journalism of the New York Times and Washington Post. Both newspapers are venerable institutions of what are known as the “mainstream media. Both the Times and the Post were correctly criticized for their failure — and in some cases, their outright complicity in not exposing the false rationale of weapons of mass destruction leading up to George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq. The term “mainstream media or “MSM fell into disrepute with critics of both the left and right. Trump took on the “crooked media in his campaign. His top adviser, Steve Bannon, later characterized the media as “the opposition. An aroused media has taken the challenge. With the help of frequent leaks from inside the administration, the media have been relentless in their coverage of the Trump administration’s incom-

petence and duplicity. The most explosive story to emerge has been the news that Flynn held discussions with the Russians in the weeks before Trump became president. The specifics of those conversations are still unfolding while this column is being written. However, what is known is that the subject of Obama’s recent sanctions was discussed and that Flynn lied about that fact to Vice President Mike Pence. What is important to note is the president was informed of Flynn’s lies by his then-Acting Attorney General, just a day before she was fired by Trump for refusing to comply with enforcing his executive order on immigration. It wasn’t until Pence complained about being hung out to dry on the Sunday morning news shows for repeating Flynn’s lie, that Trump was forced to act and Flynn “resigned. Why didn’t Trump get rid of him the moment that he knew what Flynn had become? Perhaps, the more important question is did Flynn act alone? If not, whose instructions was he following? Our own security agencies have confirmed the existence of a Russian dossier on Trump. Its factual content, in part, has also been confirmed. Isn’t the president himself then also vulnerable to blackmail by the Russians? Trump has consistently refused to criticize Vladimir Putin. In fact, Trump praised Putin’s leadership. In the face of incontrovertible evidence, the president refused steadfastly to acknowledge Russian attempts to influence the 2016 election and when he did, tried to minimize those actions. Trump also refuses to release his tax returns that could potentially shed light on rumored business entanglements with the Russians. If Trump thinks this story is going to go away because of Flynn’s resignation, he is badly mistaken. If he believes that he can bully the media into submission, he needs to remember Nixon and Johnson. If he thinks the Republican Congress will not bail on him if they believe he has become a political liability, watch his fellow GOPers man the lifeboats. Someone once said that Nixon did have real enemies, but the sword that killed him was handed to them by Nixon. Beware. The swords are out. A>@

Protecting Marron

Following in Kevin Costner’s footsteps, Judson Mills has the task of protecting a superstar singer in “The Bodyguard.

he Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Shubert Organization present the Broadway Philadelphia run of the hit musical The Bodyguard as part of the show’s first U.S. A>@ Comment@southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

eer me up, Scotty. And not just any beer will do. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the landmark sci-fi TV adventure, “Star Trek has its own series of brews produced by a small group of fans based in, of all places, Vulcan, Alberta. In recent months, the group — which calls itself the Federation of Beer — has worked with several breweries to produce sudsy tributes to Star Trek characters. Among their portfolio: The Trouble With Tribbles, a blond ale named for one of the program’s bestremembered episodes; and Red Shirt Ale, brewed in honor of the brave and predictably doomed men and women who donned red uniforms on ill-fated landing expeditions. The latest is Klingon Imperial Porter, a strong, dark ale made by New York-based Shmaltz Brewing that just arrived in the Philadelphia market. Licensed brands are nothing new in the beer world. Over the years, beer makers have turned out bottles of J.R.’s Private Stock, 4077th M*A*S*H Beer and Three Stooges Curly Light. Mostly, these beers were intended for collectors and eBay resellers; the liquid inside was an unremarkable afterthought. Not any more. Beers made in honor of “Game of Thrones, Star Wars and “The Hobbit, for example, were all well-received by even the most particular palates. Same goes for Star Trek beers. “Just like the show itself, creative quality was our first goal, Vern Raincock, one of the founders of the Federation of Beer, said. “If you look at the big picture, Star Trek has been around for 50 years, he continued. “You’ve got some fans who are in the 70s, and others in their 20s who just saw their first ‘Star Trek’ movie. That’s a huge audience, with a lot of differences. So it was important to produce a variety of beer styles that broaden your horizon. That’s no different than some of the concepts that ‘Star Trek’ touched on. Though Raincock has a background in beer distribution, he and the other members of the Federation came together primarily

as Star Trek enthusiasts. Their first brew was a small batch made for Vul-Con, the annual Star Trek convention held in the small Canadian town of Vulcan. Over the years, their enterprise grew with formal licensing agreements with CBS-TV, which holds the “Star Trek rights, and manufacturing and distribution deals with several breweries. The beers are made in limited batches of 1,000 to 1,500 cases, with two or three new brands hitting the market each year. Of course, alcohol and Star Trek go together like Capt. Kirk and an alien hottie. How many times did we see Scotty lay into a bottle of single malt, or Quark, the Ferengi bartender, mix up a Cardassian Sunrise? As for beer, well, there’s always Romulan Ale, the highly potent — and illegal — blue-colored ale. Raincock said he would love to brew a batch, but so far he hasn’t found a proper blue food coloring that will meet U.S. regs. “They did make a Romulan Ale one time in Central America, he said. “By all accounts, it was horrible and in the morning when you peed, your urine was emerald green. I don’t think that’s what they mean by “to boldly go... A>@ @beer_radar Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/ features.

going to be a good game. We just need to continued to stay focused, and everything else will fall into place. With a win, the East Passyunk Crossingbased squad will earn a return trip to The Palestra to face the winner of the other semifinal between Archbishop Wood and Archbishop Carroll. Seniors Chyna Nixon, Ashley and Minika Glenn have played key roles in helping Neumman-Goretti maintain its winning ways. The trio turned in a balanced scoring effort in a recent regular season win over St. Hubert, 79-43. Jones led all scorers with 26 points while Nixon chipped in 18 and Glenn added 11. “These are three young women who have never been put in a position to lead a team, but they have stepped up and continue to push our younger players, Petterson said.

lashback to the 2016 girls’ basketball season. The Neumann-Goretti Saints were riding one of those attention grabbing win streaks. We are talking a 23-0 regular-season mark and 43-straight league victories. But the one game that breaks the winning momentum — a 40-36 loss to Archbishop Wood in the Catholic League championship — provides an added drive to take care of unfinished business. Instead of focussing on the past, coach Andrea Peterson has her 18-4 squad focussed on the present, which would be Thursday’s Catholic League semifinal game against Cardinal O’Hara (6:30 at Philadelphia University). “We’ve had a really good few days of practice, and I know that girls are ready for this game, she said of her second-place LIKE THE REGULAR season, teamwork is ansquad. “O’Hara is a tough team and it’s other strength of this talented squad, with newcomers and veterans both contributing

to the winning cause. “The girls have been great so far, Petterson said. “I am asking some new players to fill roles and step out of their comfort zone. They are an amazing group of young women and I am so thankful I get to coach these kids. When the girls have a break in the action, there is a good chance you will find them rooting on their male counterparts who played in last night’s boys’ semifinal game against Roman Catholic, which started after press time. “They definitely share a unique bond, Peterson said of the two teams. “I don’t think there are many schools in the country that can say both boys and girls team compete for championships every year. Graham combines extreme tenacity with great energy and physical play to excel off the edge. When the Eagles add to the defensive line, Graham’s sack total should hit double digits for the next few years. He is just now entering his prime. So, Philadelphia, cheer up late in February. The Eagles are on the right path. They just have to hit on a lot of the moves they make next to get back into the Super Bowl conversation for the near future. More on that next week. A>@ Comment tures.
