Ac\ROg W\ bVS ^O`Y h! A February day that looks and feels like spring. Even though this winter has been on the milder side, sometimes in this dark month on the calendar it can seem Tom Cardella as if spring will never arrive. February is the shortest month on the calendar, but emotionally it seems to be the longest month of all. So on this day, with the temperatures pushing 70, Rittenhouse Square pulsed with life. February had turned into May. It was as if the word had gone out across the city and people came pouring out of their winter bunkers to come together to celebrate being alive. We wandered through the park overflowing with people (unfortunately the trash cans were also overflowing). Young people, old people, gays and straights, black and white and folks of all shades in between had gathered. A crazy quilt of humanity. People walking little dogs and big dogs. Pushing strollers. Fathers carrying children on their shoulders. Lovers holding hands. Older folks walking with canes. Kids perched on the concrete railings. Others sitting on park benches eating frozen yogurt or sandwiches. Some

But it’s still just a fraction of the 10,200 acres of total community green spaces and city-owned parkland that spreads across the city. With spring officially only a few weeks away — recent temps have had many of us already in spring mode for weeks — SPR

caught up with Moria Miller, who oversees strategy and communications for Philly Parks and Recreation. During the chat, Miller discussed seasonal preparations across all Philly’s parks, new happenings, and a few things you may not know about the park system that would further debunk the concrete claim. How do you guys gear up for spring? One way we gear up for spring is through our annual LOVE your Park week (May 1321). It’s a week of events where we spruce up our parks all over the city, but it’s also a celebration of parks where we’ll host movie

nights, dancing programs and other events. We also do something spectacular around Arbor Day and Earth Day; these are all the ways we get our stewards and [Friends of Philadelphia Parks] groups excited about the spring and summer. So what are the top three can’t-miss events Philly Parks and Rec plans to host this spring? [Our traveling beer garden caravan] Parks on Tap opens May 17. We are working on exact locations now, but we are bringing that back after a really successful year last ASS >/@9A ^OUS ' ,,

A former Prep Charter girls basketball player is looking forward to entertaining her hometown fans this weekend when her Harlem Globetrotters play at the Wells Fargo Center.

hen Swish, aka Bria Young, takes the court at the Wells Fargo Center Saturday afternoon, it’s going to be much more than another stop on the Harlem Globetrotters tour through the United States and Canada. This is her hometown. She played her high school ball in South Philly and went on to achieve collegiate success at nearby Philadelphia University. This time, the stage is much bigger — a crowd of thousands cheering her on as she attempts a four-point shot or the dribble slide. Yes, the ticket requests have been made — we are talking about 200 of them. Luckily, her Globetrotters are playing three games at the Wells Fargo Center, so she doesn’t have to worry about saying “sorry to her family members and friends. The Philly stopincludes one game on Saturday (noon) and two on Sunday (noon and 5 p.m.). Unlike the previous stops on the current tour, Young knows this one is going to be one she

remembers for years to come. “As much as I am trying not to have a different mindset, I think I will, Young said. “I hope to make everyone proud, make a couple of [four-point shots] and have fun. She arrived in town early to handle some of the public appearances. “It’s only my third day back and it’s great, Young said during Monday afternoon’s phone interview. Being a member of the Harlem Globetrotters isn’t just about all basketball, all of the time. Players also need to be role models to young children and give back to the community. For the West Philly native, this includes visiting elementary schools to talk with students. Of course, Monday’s appearance at the Blair Christian Academy had an extra special meaning as she was returning to her old elementary school not as Bria Young, but as Swish — the 14th female in Harlem Globetrotters history. Besides chatting it up about growing up in Philly and defying the odds, she was there to spread an important message about the ABC’s of Bullying Prevention in which she explained how to use Action, Bravery and Compassion to combat bullying, “At first I was a little nervous, she said. “Once I walked into the auditorium with all of the children there, my nerves kind of went away. Young’s story is an inspirational one, as the road to becoming Swish — a nickname she acquired after joining

>`]^S`bg WaacS To the Editor: The 8-month-old new South Philadelphia branch library (someday the Mario Lanza branch library) is open seven days a week. The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News also publish daily. Here’s the problem: Newspapers are dropped off on the pavement at the entrance of this complex, which has three institutions in one building. Within 50- to 75-feet from the same entrance is a bus stop and shelter, and the Broad Street subway line. On a consistent basis, a passer-by picks up those newspapers before 7 a.m. that belong to the branch. Here’s a solution: Attach a mailbox (with lock) to the entrance wall. Better yet, fashion a mailbox slot through the wall directly into the library’s inner sanctum. (Commercial businesses have this convenience, why not our public library?) If nothing is done to prevent further thefts of library property, those responsible are guilty of gross negligence, or reckless disregard of the consequences as affecting the property of another. Nicole Argentina South Philadelphia

Recycling tips To the Editor: These tips can lead to a cleaner and healthier city. Don’t throw circulars in the street. Put them in your recycling bin, remove the plastic wrapper. Plastic bags are not recyclable. Take them to Lowes, Target or ShopRite. Styrofoam is not recyclable. Do not overload recycle bins. Do not put used tissues, napkins or paper towels in the recycle bin. Do not put dog waste in sewer inlets or around trees. Put it in a trash container. Rose Rafferty South Philadelphia

Health check To the Editor: One in three American adults — or nearly 80 million people — have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. Research shows that high blood pressure is a contributing factor to major health conditions, including heart attacks, heart failure, stroke and kidney failure. According to the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association, nearly 46 percent of those with high blood pressure are not controlled. Yet, it can often be controlled under the supervision of a doctor with lifestyle changes and if necessary, medication. Check. Change. Control. is an online program that empowers you to learn about, monitor and manage blood pressure through a combination of resources. The hypertension management program utilizes blood pressure self-monitoring to encourage participants to take ownership of their cardiovascular health. The program is available to anyone interested in maintaining or controlling a healthy blood pressure level. “Nationwide, only about half of those with high blood pressure are achieving the recommended blood pressure reading of below 140/90 mm Hg, Charisse Fizer, member of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association Board of Directors of South-Central New Jersey, said. “Improving that rate will save many more lives. Even a 10 percent increase in the number of people treated for hypertension would lead to the prevention of an additional 14,000 deaths each year. The American Heart Association is urging you to track your numbers, but is also urging medical practices and health service organizations to prioritize blood pressure control. Target: BP is a program that supports

physicians and care teams by offering the latest tools, research and resources to reach and sustain blood pressure goal rates of less than 140/90 mmHG within the patient populations they serve. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Working with your health care provider can help significantly improve the nation’s current national blood pressure control rate and help to save lives. For more information regarding Check. Change. Control., please visit heart.org/ checkchangecontrol. To learn more about Target: BP please visit: targetbp.org Charisse Fizer, RN, MSN, American Heart Association American Stroke Association

The Museum is asking those who have friends or loved ones interred at Mount Carmel Cemetery to share a picture of their loved one (and/or the headstone, if available) and a personal story of up to 150 words by posting it on MtCarmelStories.tumblr.com or by e-mailing curatorial@nmajh.org. The project is also open to those whose families were affected by the desecration that occurred at St. Louis’s Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery last week. “We would like those who did this to understand that these are not victimless crimes. The individuals buried at Mount Carmel were human beings with names, stories, and families. They contributed to the world while they were here and continue to do so through the loved ones they left behind. We honor their memories, said Ivy Barsky, the Museum’s CEO, and Gwen Goodman, Director. In FDR Park, we also have second season of Wheel Fun Rentals, an amenity in South Philly where community members can rent bikes (cruisers, surreys, etc.) and boats (paddle boats, kayaks) to enjoy around FDR Park. It’s open weekends and holidays beginning April 18 and we are really excited about that. For the third, our movie nights in the park generally start in late May or early June and that coincides with a lot that goes down within our neighborhood and community parks.

Tell us something unique that most Philadelphians probably don’t know happens in city parks. Within the confines of the city itself we have active working farms. He trekked up four flights of stairs with a basketball in hand, and gave a pass to Young (see page 14). Swish turned and shot the ball through a window and into a hoop for a live audience in the courtyard. Sounds like a remake of the old McDonald’s commercial featuring NBA legends Larry Bird and Michael Jordan.

KDW DUH \RX GRLQJ 6DWXUGD\ QLJKW" Well, Bob Pantano’s answer is the same every week — actually for the last 40 years. Maybe you’ve heard of something called the Bob Pantano Dance Party? We are talking about the first and longest-running radio dance party in the nation. This Saturday night (March 4) is extra special, as it marks the 40th anniversary celebration and live broadcast of the show.

N southphillyreview.com

There is a big night of performances and special guests lined up for this memorable ocassion taking place at The Adelphia Restaurant and Nightclub in Deptford, N.J. “This is a special event we are dedicating to all of the listeners who have been listening for the last 40 years, Pantano, who is a native of Seventh and Federal streets, said. The origins of this weekly dance-thenight-away affair date to the 1960s, when the Bishop Neumann graduate (class of ’67) started spinning at the record hops and then the nightclubs in the ’70s. His professional radio career began on WCAM in Camden in ’71. He pioneered the live-radio broadcast, The Saturday Night Dance Party, in ’77, and has enthralled and entertained Philadelphia audiences with its upbeat dance music. “I just had an idea that I wanted to do a disco party on the air, Pantano, who has enjoyed his share of Geno’s, Pat’s and Federal soft pretzels, recalled. “I wanted to bring it to a nightclub and give it a chance. It could’ve lasted a week or two, but it lasted 40 years. His knack for playing the best record hop tunes of the ’60s, along with the dance club classics of the ’70s and ’80s, has made him a celebrity around the Delaware Valley. The show originates exclusively on 98.1 WOGL and is simulcast on 96.1 WTTH Atlantic City, N.J. and 93.1

WEZW Wildwood, N.J. Forty years later, his audience is stronger than ever. Pantano, who was presented the Person of the Year Award by the Broadcast Pioneers Hall in 2015 and inducted into its Hall of Fame, is No. 1 in his time slot across the board in the overall ratings as well as every age demographic, including the all-important 25 to 54 — for the first time ever, in the latest Nielsen ratings book. Mr. Saturday Night is now the King of Saturday Night among Delaware Valley radio listeners. This king has no plans of leaving the party scene. “Let’s go for 10 more. I am going the distance, Pantano said. “As long as people keep dancing, we will still be playing. A>@

CARDELLA continued from page 1 of the crowd already wore shorts and flip flops — at least the more youthful did. Others were still trapped in the insulated jackets of winter, looking foolishly out of place. A light breeze playfully fooled us into thinking we were 20 years younger than we really are. At one end of the square, a young man in bare feet strummed an acoustic guitar and sang James Taylor songs ridiculously off key. Only on a day such as this could his mangled rendition of “Country Roads be forgiven. At the other end of the square, you could hear the brass sounds of New Orleans Dixieland, and that’s where we headed. A big crowd had gathered as five men dressed formally in black played their joyful music. Some women stepped in and began to dance to the ragtime—not all of them young. Their happiness was infectious. One of the young people took selfies while dancing. No doubt they would soon appear on her Facebook page. When the band began to play the inevitable “When The Saints Go Marchin’ In, one young man stepped into the circle and helped sing the refrain while he stepped lightly with the head jazz master. We saw friends in the crowd and waved. Five or six young black men jumped into the circle, as if on cue (and in retrospect I guess there had been some kind of signal). Their dancing owed as much to their wonderful gymnastics ability as Terpsichore. The crowd clapped in rhythm. The French Quarter and Bourbon Street had been magically transported to Rittenhouse Square. During a break in their performance, the dancers solicited contributions from the crowd with a good-natured rap that assured us that though black, they were unarmed and posed no threat. My wife and some others dropped dollar bills into the hat being passed. The dancers and musicians had earned it. They were our pied pipers, and we were thrilled to be their followers in the moment. We were lucky to find space on a park bench as the band and the dancers dis-

solved and moved to another entrance of the square. Snuggled together, we marveled at the passing parade. We wondered aloud at the crowd’s diversity. Diversity has gotten such a bad rap. Diversity has become a word used to connote an artificial quota. Or diversity is simply mocked by some in this age of cynicism and feared by others. But in Rittenhouse Square on this beautiful Sunday, diversity had shown its true meaning. We were experiencing a reminder that diversity can be real. And when it is real, diversity is a gorgeous thing — a thing that is what really makes America exceptional. Maybe this was only an illusion like the spring-like temperatures in the heart of winter. Maybe diversity is only something that you can find in the City — in Rittenhouse Square, where the atmosphere is non-threatening. Where it is even welcoming. Maybe this magical Sunday is only just that, a magic trick played by the mind — a hope rather than a reality — like the first black man becoming president and being replaced by insufferable smugness and entitlement — a return to yesterday. But neither my wife nor I think so. On this Sunday in the park, it was possible to believe. We need to believe this day is real for our lives to have meaning — for the future to have meaning. And as corny as it sounds, the words of Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A Changin’ sneak into my mind. The darkness that has descended on our body politic is but a temporary setback. Progress does not flow in a straight line. What is happening across this country emanating from Washington is just an attempt to roll back the tide. Maybe what we’re feeling in the park is “the audacity of hope as Obama called it. But in our audacity, as I watch the multi-colored rainbow that surrounds us in Rittenhouse Square on this magical Sunday, I sense the inevitability of these timeless waves that sweep toward us. Those who try to stop the waves stand at the water’s edge. They believe that they can hold back the tide with a wave of their hands. They angrily shout. And while they stubbornly stand there, the tide rolls over them. A>@

hen Swish, aka Bria Young, takes the court at the Wells Fargo Center Saturday afternoon, it’s going to be much more than another stop on the Harlem Globetrotters tour through the United States and Canada.

Young’s story is an inspirational one, as the road to becoming Swish — a nickname she acquired after joining

the Globetrotters thanks to a jump shot that consistently goes swish — was far from an easy one. Her high school career at Preparatory Charter High School, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., did not go exactly as planned as a result of a serious knee injury that she suffered as a teenager, forcing her to miss significant playing time as a Lady Husky. Many athletes would’ve given up hope of his or her professional hoop dreams becoming a reality, but Young was not one of them - even after going through two ACL reconstruction surgeries within a span of six months. “At first I thought it was all over, but a little voice within told me not to give up, so I didn’t and I worked harder than ever before to rehab my knee, is how Swish retells the story in her online bio. Things would turn around. Young would return to the court her senior year at Prep Charter, and helped Prep Charter defeat Central High School for the girls basketball Public League championship - the first in program history. “It was huge for us, not just me, but our program, the 5-foot-6 guard recalled. For Young, those career dreams were getting back on track as she accepted a Division I scholarship to play basketball at St. Francis University, but her stay ended up being a short one as a result of being

homesick. What came next, however, opened the door for Young to put her game on full display. She transferred to Division II Philadelphia University, which she described as “the best decision for me. Young, who majored in Psychology, enjoyed a stellar fouryear career with the Rams that included tallying 1,067 career points and being named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year and helping her team win a league championship her senior year. But she was far from finished. South Philadelphia natives Mike and Joe Richmond helped with lining up the Globetrotters tryout, and as they say, the rest is history. Swish is one of four female players currently on the team, with the others being TNT, who played college basketball at Temple University, Ace, who hails from Harrisburg, and Hoops. In today’s professional basketball world, other opportunities could arise via the WNBA or overseas, but Swish is quite content calling herself a member of the Harlem Globetrotters. “I think the Globetrotters is the job for me. I don’t see myself going anywhere, she said. A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

Disposal dilemma What those troughs on historic barroom oors were really used for

G

RX NQRZ WKRVH XULQDO WURXJKV RQ WKH Ă RRU DW WKH EDVH RI EDUV LQ ROG WLPH WDSURRPV" Well, zip it up guys. Despite the common myth, the fact is those troughs are not, were not and never were intended to be used as urinals. In fact, the troughs are spittoons, a handy place to puh-tooey a wad of slobbery tobacco juice. Common sense alone should tell you they weren’t designed for barstool urination. Never mind the whole socially unacceptable aspect of whipping out one’s wand in a public place. Consider that there’s no backsplash, and the gutters typically measure only about eight inches in width. As anyone who’s ever had to scrub a toilet will tell you, men — especially after a few belts — are hardly expert marksmen. Nonetheless, the myth persists. At Kelliann’s Bar & Grill, 16th and Spring Garden streets, the manager told me the trough was “for urinating, so you didn’t lose your seat at the bar when you had to go.â€? The 25-foot-long trough running along the bar at the 112-year-old Cherry Street Tavern (129 N. 22nd St) is cited by both Wikipedia and the city’s tourism agency as a urinal. Even Philadelphia Weekly repeated the fiction, reporting a decade ago that, “In the good old days men drank, ate and whizzed at the same time.â€? Seriously? I ran the myth past Lou Capozzoli, the owner of Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar in South Philadelphia, where a tiled trough runs along the base of an oak bar. He scoffed when I asked if it was used as a urinal: “I never seen anyone pee in it. My father had the trough installed after buying the place in 1938. If anybody had peed in there, my father would have killed ‘em.â€? Capozzoli continued: “You have to realize

that bars were a lot different back then. They were dirty. Men would toss their stogies on the floor, people would spit tobacco. My father installed the trough with running water — it still works, by the way — and you’d sweep everything into it, then wash it out three, four times a day.â€? The historical record confirms Capozzoli’s memory. The drawing in an 1897 patent for a barroom trough looks identical to the type still found around town, and its description indicates it was intended as a spittoon. Earlier, open sawdust boxes and widemouth earthenware jugs were used for barroom slobber. Early 20th-century saloons weren’t particularly sanitary. A hygiene manual published by Harvard University in 1911 noted, “When a man steps up to a bar in a public saloon, he is apt to rub elbows with the scum of the earth,â€? where the patrons are infested with cankers and “a large percentage of bartenders are syphilitic.â€? But when they had to relieve themselves, men didn’t just casually let loose a stream. They took it to the outhouse or water closet. The trough on the floor, the manual said, was “for use as a cuspidor and a receptacle for the froth that some men insist upon blowing off their mug of beer‌â€? Now, I’ll concede there might’ve been occasions when a barroom patron used one to take an ill-considered leak. This is Philadelphia, after all — a town where Eagles fans once commonly peed in the bathroom sinks of old Veterans Stadium. But let’s put this myth to rest. Those are spittoons, not urinals. A>@

Seven is the other number that the Saints are going to have a tough time forgetting, as in the number of points the East Passyunk Crossing squad ended up losing by in the title tilt, 65-58. For Wood, which is coached by former Neumann-Goretti assistant John Mosco, the victory is a historic one as it’s the first time in the program’s 51-year history that the Vikings can call themselves Catholic League champs. Getting back to the number 13, it’s the largest halftime deficit a champion has overcome. The local squad ended up being outscored 25-11 in the third quarter. Quade Green, a University of Kentucky signee, led the Neumann-Goretti offense with 18 points and sevens assists. Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree, who will be heading to Villanova University in the fall, just missed out on a double-double, finishing with 8 points and 11 rebounds. Sure, this marks a third straight heartbreaking title game loss for the Saints, with the previous two coming at the hands of rival Roman Catholic, but the focus has shifted to the City title portion of the postseason. Eagles getting ready to make key free-agent decisions 2/D3 A>/2/@=

truly have in place to make a real championship run. There are limits to realistic expectations for free agency. The Eagles are ranked near the back of the back in the league in terms of available dollars to spend within the salary cap this season. That takes away options for the sometimes-frenzied spending throughout the NFL starting on March 9. The Eagles are also intent in avoiding “BandAid fixes for holes on the roster, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said weeks ago. But free agency is just the start, followed by the NFL draft in late April and including the ever-possible trades or other creative ways to build a roster. Roseman is a wheeler and dealer, and he has a roster with some very definite needs. What areas will the Eagles target? Here is a list of some areas that, throughout the next several weeks, the team is sure to look to improve.

fter a two-month, and then some, quiet period, the Eagles are going to unveil their roster plans for 2017 starting with the NFL’s free-agency period when the new league business year opens on March 9. It’s been an agonizing period of time since Jan. 1, when the team ended the ’16 season with a final-game win over the Dallas Cowboys. Wake up and smell the new season, then. A 7-9 record in ’16 was both promising and disappointing, as the Eagles missed the playoffs. They haven’t been in the postseason since ’13 and haven’t won a playoff game since the ’08 season, when they advanced to the NFC championship game. In what may or may not be an active freeagency period, we’ll get our first real taste of A key to-do in this offseason is to, the Eagles just how many pieces the Eagles think they keep saying, “surround quarterback Carson

Wide receiver

Wentz with weapons. A glaring need exists in the wide receiver spots. How the Eagles do it is the big mystery. They aren’t likely to be in the game for the big-money free agents at wide receiver, and there is going to be plenty of competition for the reasonably priced help. One thing is certain: Having two or three additions come in and help the wide receiver spots would be an ideal scenario. A lot of firepower is needed.

Cornerback The team released starter Leodis McKelvin in February. The other 2016 starter, Nolan Carroll, is slated to be a free agent himself. This position sets up for change in a big way. About the only certainty is that second-year man Jalen Mills is in line for serious playing time.

Running back

some pressure off of Wentz.

Defensive end The lack of a consistent pass rush hampered the Jim Schwartz defense in 2016. He needs another threat off the edge. This may not come until the draft, but a difference-making kind of player would take the defense to a new level.

Linebacker Where’s the depth? The Eagles love Jordan Hicks in the middle and Nigel Bradham is a cog at the strong-side position. Mychal Kendricks has played very little here the last two seasons. What’s up at linebacker, traditionally a strong spot for Philadelphia? Is that too long a list for a single offseason? Perhaps. The Eagles have to be really, really good in this offseason and score on a high percentage of their additions and get this team smack-dab in the middle of the playoff scene, a neighborhood the Eagles want to hang out in on an every-season basis. A>@

The Eagles have a long history of stellar running backs, from Ricky Watters to Duce Staley and then Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy, but the position is in need of rejuvenation. The Eagles need to find themselves a go-to back for the offense. As much as wide receiver is a Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/feaneed, running back is just a tick below to take tures.
