t seems pretty clear that a largescale digital evolution continues in American culture and, in fact, is picking up steam. The future is online, for better or worse. And it also seems that it’s essential for South Philly youths to be prepared for a world in which they’ll need
to type well, use a computer, work with various technologies, and generally develop a complex digital vocabulary. That’s where code.org comes in, and at St. Gabriel School, 2917 Dickinson St., computer technology teacher Brien Nunn is teaching with a forward-thinking curriculum that’s both powerfully useful and widely resonant with a student
body who are, often times, more technologically-advanced than their parents. On Friday, SPR visited a fourthgrade class where Nunn’s also teaching typing skills with typing. com. That site and code.org are not only huge hits with his students, but they’ve also been taking a newfound love for typing and coding home because they can continue to
work on classroom projects from computers in their living rooms. “A kid learned something in my classroom and then goes home and shows it to their parents and wants to implement it at home? This is obviously a concept that’s connecting deeper than I thought it would, Nunn, a recent Millserville University graduate and Media-area ASS CODE ^OUS ,,

By Tom Cardella I was complaining to Uncle Nunzio the other day about the price of growing older. “I have a doctor for every body part, By Phyllis Stein-Novack Most chefs agree it is best to let ingredients speak for themselves. When too many ingredients appear on a plate, it is difficult to taste and enjoy the chef’s creation. This adage went through my mind during lunch at The Little Lion, a charming new restaurant located inside a former bank in Old City. After a ghastly bout of flu, I was finally able to go outside in the sunshine and fresh air.

Letters: To the Editor: I love when locals show their love for South Philly! On Monday, this publication closed the voting period for the 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards, and I must say that I am quite proud of the diversity of responses. I am pretty good at keeping secrets, so you will have to wait until our March 17 Spring Guide to learn the victors’ identities. I thank you for your diligence in honoring local businesses and individuals. Joseph Myers South Philadelphia Review editor

To the Editor: I made an attempt to watch the Sunday night’s Academy Awards but, quite honestly, couldn’t get past the appalling racist banter disguised as satire by host Chris Rock, and so it was turned off. I usually enjoy watching for the fashion and hairstyles since I’m in that profession, but I certainly did not consider this entertaining, so I decided to boycott the show as well. I was very happy to hear about Leonardo DiCaprio “finally winning his long-awaited and deserved award but equally disappointed to find that Sylvester Stallone was not chosen for what will probably be his last portrayal of the be-

“I can’t wait for it to come. I’m not a person for the cold weather. I’m ready for it to be baseball season. Anthony Salerno, 1600 block of Shunk Street
loved Rocky character in “Creed. I have always considered myself a movie buff, but right now I find there are not many films theater- worthy. The last movie I considered epic was 2014’s “Unbroken, a true story of an American war hero that, by the way, did not receive one nomination that year. These actors are making millions of dollars for just one performance and even though the ticket prices have gone up quite a bit, we still continue to support what may someday become a dying art form. Certain actors have such huge egos that they have the nerve to cry the blues about being treated unfairly. I see them all as a big bunch of sore losers. Why are we not giving more high honors to the dedicated people who diligently strive every day to find the cures for cancer and so many other dreaded diseases? There are ordinary, working class individuals who perform brave and courageous acts every day with no praise or notoriety; they are known as unsung heroes because that is exactly what they are. Some of these actors are so pampered and self-centered that they actually believe their own hype, but, in reality, it is all just an illusion. There are people who are much more worthy of recognition, so come down from your pedestal, and pray that your fans won’t decide to boycott you. Be thankful that your craft is still considered relevant because unfortunately with Netflix, On Demand, Fire TV Stick and many other ways we can view a movie, the possibility that theaters may someday become obsolete is not out of the question. I have always loved and supported the arts and would love to see them live on, but from the extreme narcissism and racial slurs I’ve been hearing lately, it is very apparent to me that the class and charm of “Old Hollywood is lost and gone forever. Debbie Russino South Philadelphia
“It’s a great time of year. I want to see stuff blooming. I look forward to better weather and definitely no snow. Sophia Hummel, 2300 block of Pierce Street
Kelley’s congregants To the Editor: Kudos to Theresa Selvaggi (“An aboveaverage Joe, Feb. 25) for her spot-on review of Rev. Joseph Kelley! Unknowingly, he single-handedly brought me back to church, as for years I was one of those “twice-a-year Catholics (Christmas and Easter). But, one day, something (my guardian angel?) told me to get up and go to Mass. As it turned out, Rev. Kelley was the celebrant that day. It was interesting to hear how he smoothly blended in the words of the Gospel with current events. It was, and continues to be, quite amazing. Over the years, Fr. Kelley’s homilies have gone right to the heart and mind, and so many of his sermons are met with applause and, yes, standing ovations. It amazes me how he can present homilies without looking at notes and without any hesitation in his words. And his flair for comedy is becoming legendary. I’ve lost count of the number of times the stories about his family have had the faithful laughing heartedly. Even with all the responsibilities he has with running two parishes (St. Monica and St. Edmond), he always has time for someone who needs a shoulder to cry on. And he certainly knows how to turn those tears into laughter. I am honored to consider him not just my parish priest, but a friend. As he is always faithful to God, his country, his family, his city, and his parishioners, we are extremely lucky to have him. He is, short and sweet, a local treasure. God bless him and keep him well. Rosary Casiello South Philadelphia

outh Philly will never lack for character or characters. Residents of and visitors to this stretch of the city will always find reasons to revel for their lot in life. While I enjoy chronicling the aspirations and achievements of today’s crop of inhabitants, I do often ponder what wonders might have come from living among and/or interviewing the figures listed below. I have certainly met some notable individuals during my life, but the more, the merrier. Here then is a list of South Philadelphians whom I wish I could have met. 10) Harry Harp: I love a good dose of difficulty occasionally, but I crave comfort most of the time. Being the father of a four-year-old who loves to stay hydrated, I have St. John Neumann High School product Harry Harp, the inventor of the flexible straw, to thank for my never becoming bent out of shape when my son is thirsty. 9) Paul Arizin: An alumnus of St. Monica School, this sharpshooter starred at Villanova University and logged 12 years playing for the Philadelphia Warriors, making 10 All-Star teams, claiming two NBA scoring championships, and winning the 1956 league champion. Though he died a little more than nine years ago, I would still pick him to launch crucial jumpers before I would even consider a current 76er. 8) Irvin Kershner: I do not care how many “Star Wars films come to delight our eyes. NOTHING will ever top “The Empire Strikes Back, the fifth episode in the saga. The Whitman product directed 14 other films, but the geek in me would want to hear about how he felt when giving James Earl Jones his cue to say “No, I am your father. 7) Edward “Babe Heffron: Anyone involved in the protection of my country merits my respect, so this Pennsport native, whose World War II feats as a mem-
ber of the “Easy Company, part of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, inspired the “Band of Brothers miniseries, would receive a salute and two very eager ears if he were still alive. 6) Mario Lanza: Born Alfred Arnold Cocozza, one of Bella Vista’s finest logged only 38 years on this earth; however, he filled them with such memorable experiences and performances that he has started to change my mind about opera, with which I have never had a strong connection. 5) Marian Anderson: How many people have you known who so easily make apparent that they are rare gems? This South of South native, whom conductor Arturo Toscanini lauded as having a voice that “one hears once in a hundred years, was one such polished paragon of perfection. 4) John Marzano: Hailing from Passyunk Square, John Marzano played for three teams, including my beloved Boston Red Sox, in his career. Nearly eight years after his passing, his name lives on through an eponymous scout league and in the stories of those who admired his tenacious approach and sincere gratitude for having a shot in the big leagues. 3) Larry Fine: Louis Feinberg, known professionally as Larry Fine, had been my favorite Stooge long before I learned he was born in Queen Village. When I had that fact pointed out to me, I mentally replayed so many of his gags and thought, “Of course he’s from South Philly. We patented silliness. 2) Frank Rizzo: Most of these figures, including Rizzo, were alive at some point in my life, so I heard of their successes and controversies first-hand. This largerthan-life figure has many admirers and detractors, ensuring that nobody will ever forget the large influence he wielded in this city. 1) David Brenner: Easily my favorite comedian as I grew up, Brenner received an evaluation similar to what I gave Fine when learning he hailed from South Philly. I conducted a phone interview with him in December 2013, generating 75 minutes of material. He asked about the length of our conversation and said he normally engaged in much shorter talks, saying the duration is a testament to my skill as a journalist. I am NEVER deleting that interview. Rest in peace, Mr. Brenner and the figures above you on this list. Thank you for your influence. SPR

he Philadelphia Land Bank may have become a reality with legislation that passed in the winter of 2013, but fast forward to the present, and things are really starting to progress in terms of Philadelphia’s activation of vacant, often blighted, lots. With news early last month of the Women’s Community Revitalization Project’s (WCRP) plans to coordinate with Citizens Acting Together Can Help (CATCH) to provide affordable housing on an approximately 32-residence collection of two large plots in Point Breeze, SPR checked in with WCRP, the Land Bank, and 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s office to hear about the future of the Land Bank in South Philly. The Philadelphia Vacant Property Review Committee approved the transfer of two parcels to WCRP – 1308-1344 S. Capitol Street and 1400-1428 S. Taylor St. “This development will provide affordable housing opportunities for low-income renters, who are particularly vulnerable when area rents rise sharply, Johnson said in a statement. “We must continue to work to advance smart development policies that establish Point Breeze as a neighborhood of choice for everyone. “There’s a couple hundred in South Philly, Steve Cobb, Johnson’s director of legislation, explained. “To date, he’s transferred 150 properties and we’re transferring as the agencies are able to process them. The process requires a transfer of deeds from various previously established city agencies to the Land Bank, and it’s executed via legislation from councilpersons. To be clear, most of the property getting transferred into the Land Bank are empty, vacant lots – not necessarily blighted or dangerous structures. In a big map of the 2nd District, Cobb confirmed the empty lots are primarily concentrated in a couple pockets of the district: Point Breeze and Grays Ferry. There’s nearly nothing south of Snyder Avenue or north of Washington Avenue. But be-
tween 25th and 31st streets, between Alter and Tasker streets, there’s quite a clustering. Cobb noted there’s been far more interest in the South Philly properties than the district’s Southwest Philadelphia properties. “The Councilman’s optimistic about the Land Bank. It has a planning apparatus, it can formulate a coherent plan for the lots in the city, Cobb said. According to the Central Philadelphia Development Corp. and Center City District, a report says “Point Breeze has experienced the steepest rise in rental rise of any Philadelphia neighborhood over the last two years. “We welcome new folks but we want to stay and make sure people have what’s needed in their communities, WCRP executive director Nora Lichtash said through a statement. “We forget that our city is home to over 400,000 individuals living below the poverty line. Over the phone, the mostly North Philly-situated community organizer told SPR “we don’t want anyone to feel bad about coming to our neighborhoods, but no one wants to be pushed out or kept out. There’s a welcoming spirit at our core – we don’t blame new residents, but we want to make sure that they know that people have been living and working and worshipping there for many years. In a spring ’16 report from the Philadelphia Coalition for Affordable Communities, from ’00 to ’12, South Philly’s “Change in Median Home Sale Price has skyrocketed 184 percent, “Median Gross Rent rose 18 percent, while “Median Household Income went up four percent. WCRP has completed 12 developments in Philadelphia in its 28 years – 250 units representing $65 million dollars of investment. But it’s worth mentioning their expertise lies in working with public entities to secure tax credit funding and affordable housing funding to get new brick and mortar developments built. “We’re not new at this, Lichtash said. “We’re taking the responsibility of raising the money and building the development and making sure we follow all the rules of our funders and financers.
THE PROJECT COMES as a partnership with CATCH, which focuses primarily on housing veterans, homeless veterans, and individuals with special needs. The agreement that WCRP and CATCH have entered into guarantees CATCH clients one-third of the Mamie Nichols Townhomes. “We’ve been on the ground in Point Breeze for a very long time, CATCH president and CEO Raymond Pescatore said in a statement. “Even casual observers can see how fast things are changing. This project is about uniting new and old residents to create a healthy, diverse community for everyone, regardless of their income level. We’re also particularly excited about dedicating a portion for our veterans, who deserve a place to live after serving their country. The Land Bank will continue to work in concert with City Council staff and non-profits like Habitat For Humanity. “What Cobb and Johnson have asked us to do is to try to pinpoint properties in [Point Breeze and Grays Ferry] that are now publicly owned and coming into title with the Land Bank to create developable sites, Nicholas Scafidi, interim executive director of the Land Bank, noted. “The whole purpose of the Land Bank is to take vacant, blighted property and turn it into productive use and put it back on the tax roles and get rid of the blight. That’s the effort we’re undertaking throughout the city but very specifically in the second Councilmanic district. Cobb, Lichtash, and Scafidi stressed that market-rate housing is essential, as well, but that the Land Bank may have an especially strong capability to impact neighborhoods that need support. “There are many, many people who are working class people with good-paying jobs who qualify for affordable housing. There’s no doubt that there are people in need of supportive housing services, Scafidi, who was born on the 800 block of South Delhi Street, urged. “There’s a variety of purposes for the Land Bank, some of which involve increased tax revenue and others are about the community, Paul Chrystie, the Land Bank’s communications director, said.

Map provided by the Land bank.
The Land Bank isn’t entirely about affordability, it’s also about easing and smoothing the process of smart development that’s approved by a City agency. Cobb points to Carpenter Green, 17th and Carpenter streets, the Ralph Brooks Tot Lot, 20th and Tasker streets, and Habitat for Humanity’s builds on the 2300 block of Greenwich Street as success stories of pooled and transferred land to communityoriented projects. “There’s great potential here, Scafidi said. “One of the real beneficial efforts is developing assemblages, taking properties owned by all the various housing agencies and getting all those properties in one place. It’s one-stopshopping: once [interested parties] have identified that they’re interested in properties, they can come to the Land Bank to process the sale or purchase. For many, the hope is that the Mamie Nichols townhomes are representative of the kinds of projects that will continue to come as a result of the Land Bank. “We’re so excited about working in South Philly, and we really respect the people who work there, and we’re here as guests but people are really excited about the idea of truly affordable housing, Lichtash said. “There’s a need for affordability and I think we’re doing it and showing that it can be done. I think we have a chance in Philly. SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

resident, said. “I love it because coding with K-8 students, I never thought that I would have the opportunity to balance the curriculum – I never thought it would be something I could teach. These sites know how to cater to kids, too: there are Disney themes (“there’s a “Frozen one with Elsa doing figure eights, said Nunn); Hot Wheels, Minecraft; Star Wars; and comic book-style character games. “What turned me off [from coding when I was younger] was the sitting and memorization, and this takes that away, Nunn explained. “This flips it and turns it into a game. Code.org says more than 220 million people have been served in over 180 countries through 200,000 hours of code. In a Frequently Asked Questions section, the 501(c)(3) organization aims at demystifying coding and computer sciences. “Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity, according to the site. The mission is “dedicated to expanding participation in computer science making it available in more schools, and increasing participation by women and underrepresented students of color. They have some pretty hefty supporting companies, too: Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and the Boys & Girls Club of America. The school’s principal is proud of the work happening in Nunn’s classroom. “As technology continues to advance us, it is important that we keep up with those changes, Sister Noreen Friel said. “With the introduction to coding in Mr. Nunn’s fourth-grade computer class, we are insuring that our students are provided with both the information and instruction needed to succeed not only here at St. Gabriel’s, but also anywhere after to further
to success for coding: trial and error. He’ll start by running a set of coding prompts he’s stacked thus far to see if it “works, then he’ll go back to add more coding until he’s completed the game. It’s smart and applicable to more than just coding. One of the really charming aspects of Nunn’s class, that’s not especially academic, is that the kids type and code to Kidz Bop pop tunes like Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off and Shawn Mendes’ “Stitches. One student makes a request – Justin Bieber’s “Sorry. The younger pupils type to Disney – it clearly adds another bit of enthusiasm to his class. Rick Sowell, of the 2900 block of Reed Street, completed an impressive run of Flappy Bird coding and got to print a certificate of completion. He loves this class “because I get to do code.org and type. Does he want to be a programmer some day? “Maybe he said, but certainly beamed with pride holding his Hour of Code certificate. Even when his certificate of completion showed up on his screen, Sowell was given the option of Tweeting or sharing on Facebook his accomplishment. Nunn said the web expands his teaching capacities. “With the internet, it’s great. There are great resources online for new teachers, he explained and, another thing he’s been surprised by, is the support from alumni. “For being a Catholic school and a school that at one point was supposed to be closed, the generosity from alumni and the neighborhood and companies and businesses looking to reach out and donate have been overwhelming. They’ve blown my mind. No doubt his students surprise him with their enthusiasm for coding at the age of 10, too. SPR

A Dickinson Square West resident is proving that processing life’s layers stands as a major key to obtaining singing success. ŽÊ0g 8]aS^V ;gS`a Review Editor

any people make music for the financial windfall that could come from their efforts, but, fortunately, most practitioners pronounce themselves as advocates for communicating and connecting with listeners and audiences. Sophie Coran has always allowed companionship through chords to inspire her presence within the music industry and recently released a video for “Tell Me, a track on the 25-year-old’s
June-issued “Better extended play. “I definitely look to affect people through my songs, the resident of the 600 block of Fernon Street said of her output and identity as a storyteller. “There are so many unique experiences out there, but what ties them all together is that they’re molding who we are. That’s what I try to convey. The Dickinson Square West denizen has packed a ton of experiences into her compact lifespan and constantly addresses the depth and influence of the most educational occasions. Exploring
the workings of the heart will forever count as a thorough lesson provider for everyone, and Coran accounts for such an investigation through “Tell Me. “It’s such an important song for me, she declared of the piano-driven desire to obtain answers from a romantic interest. “The matter had made me crazy and upset, so I wrote this as a pep talk to myself, and I’m happy with where it fits in my maturation as a singer and a person. The London-shot promotional video finds Coran courting comprehension
of loyalty when love comes calling. Also a reflection of the frequent sting that parting from people engenders, the tune serves as a wonderful example of the severity of her infatuation with crafting camaraderie with as many people as possible, as she feels music can be a balm for one’s setbacks. “The song was a good way for me to find closure because sometimes we learn that our perceptions and reality aren’t the same, Coran said. “I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished through it, and I usually end my sets with it. I think

it gives insights into my search for that bond between me as someone who has gone through loss and other people who are looking to move on from their struggles, too. I like analyzing how we all process stuff and find common ties. Music is my way to do that, and something has clicked with my writing where I feel my observations are going to take on new meaning. I’m excited, to say the least. HAVING CALLED DICKINSON Square West her turf since July, Coran has used the period to fall even more in love with her birth city. Hailing from the Art Museum area, she has long admired Philadelphia’s artistic possibilities and looks forward to helping the music scene to achieve additional national renown. “It’s a really cool place to be, and it’s very conducive to feeling inspired, Coran said of the metropolis. “There is quite a vibe here, and I think so many people are willing to explore how they can maximize what the city has to offer, especially creatively. Her own creative impulses began at age 2 when she asked for a piano. Com-

mencing lessons three years later, she soon came to consider the instrument the irrepressible siren willing her to tackle intense emotions and feelings. “I tried the flute, violin, and guitar, but the piano was the perfect means for me to get at what I wanted to say, Coran said. “To this day, it’s still my undisputed source of making connections with people and looking at what’s in my heart to put out there. Following enrollment at Girard Aca-
demic Music Program, 2136 W. Ritner St., and Central High School, she actualized her dream to test her talent in New York City by studying composition at the Manhattan School of Music. A quest for supplemental contentment and curiosity took her to Europe, with time in the United Kingdom proving especially enduring in shaping her artistic sensibility. “I thought, ‘Wow, this is where I really want to be,’ the singer/songwriter said of her time over the pond. “It really helped me to grow and become a better writer and observer. Capturing the 2014 Shure Songwriting Award for “Out of Focus, Coran continued to evolve through her United Kingdom tenure and returned to Philadelphia last summer with an enhanced appreciation for the rewards of tenacity. “Music is always going to be a tough business, and it’s easy to become discouraged, she said. “I keep seeing every stop as a possible source of inspiration, and I love when I can stop, look around, and realize I’m very fortunate. Coran confided that “Tell Me, one of four tunes on “Better, whose overall sound Music Dash dubbed “very mel-
low and relaxing, jazzy at some points, cute and romantic in others, will share much in common with her new material in that it and the eventual compositions will remind listeners that they need not fret over feeling frustrated and that they must persevere, especially if they believe that their sought-after joys will lead to lasting happiness. Set to head back over the Atlantic Ocean for a March 22 gig at London’s Century Club, excited over the prospects of finishing her first full-length album by this time next year, and thrilled at the possibility of doing mini tours in Boston and New York City, she is certainly putting her money where her mic is. “We all have things to say, and I don’t want to keep quiet, Coran laughed. “I love this journey because I know it’s all about finding my place and being some kind of companion for other people, too. was complaining to Uncle Nunzio the other day about the price of growing older. “I have a doctor for every body part, I griped. “And they’re all specialists, Uncle replied while peeling the skin off an orange. “Yeah, I agreed, “one for my left buttock and one for my right. Talk about the age of specialization. “And now we have this Crazy March season? Uncle asked. “It’s called March Madness. You know, the basketball tournament. Uncle won last year’s pool by closing his eyes and picking the winners. The year before, Uncle’s friend Vito won, and he’s never seen a basketball game. I got to thinking. “Madness is a good word to describe the 2016 Republican Presidential Primaries. Donald Trump may wind up as the Republican nominee for president. Back in the day, like before last summer, the thought of la Donald running for president would’ve been cause for checking for lead in the water supply. But even lead in the water supply is fast becoming the norm. Uncle’s theory is the lead in our water supply IS responsible for Donald Trump’s popularity. Lead does affect the human brain, so maybe he’s on to something. “What about Trump’s high unfavorability ratings? I asked him. “Bottled water. The rest of us drink bottled spring water so we don’t get the effects of lead in our brains. Apparently, the Republican establishment has been wasting time trying all kinds of political tricks to derail Trump’s candidacy. All it had to do was hand out cases of Poland Spring to Trump supporters and warn them off their water supply. Maybe that’s why Sen. Marco Rubio is always reaching for a bottle of water when he speaks. Rubio has the worst case of dry mouth in political history (although President William Henry Harrison also suffered from the same problem, but he died a month into office) and so a promising life with dry mouth abruptly came to an end. I’m not sure I buy Uncle’s lead poisoning reasoning for Trump’s success. Why would the affect be felt only by Republicans? I may be biased (and I freely admit I am), but the Democratic debates seem much more reasoned and based on the issues than do the Republican versions. TOO MUCH DEBT?
Ž a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [ wandered into the Republican Party of today, and Ben Carson just yawns and fiddles with the sleep number on his mattress. I know Hillary doesn’t know if she’s being fitted for an orange jumpsuit any day, but that’s the norm for a Clinton. And Bernie, a self-declared Democratic Socialist, would ordinarily be considered the crazy one, but suddenly Sweden doesn’t sound so bad when he’s addressing a crowd of supporters. So here’s my theory-Dumb voters. I know it’s heresy to think of a bunch of American voters as being idiots. After all, if America is an exceptional country, it would seem to follow that exceptional people inhabit it. Well, many of us are exceptional. We’re exceptionally dumb. You might ask, are you excluding yourself from the dumbest among us? Yes, because I’m not the one yelling USA! at Trump rallies. Let me make myself perfectly clear, as one of our former presidents used to say (I might add it took dumb voters to re-elect Richard M. Nixon after we already knew about Watergate). There are clear examples that stupidity has become the hallmark of the ’16 Republican race. Trump supporters say they like la Donald because he’s not afraid to say what’s on his mind. It’s on record that Trump has changed his positions on almost every major issue over the years. The inescapable conclusion about Donald Trump is that he changes his mind whenever it benefits him. He has one core belief and that is Donald Trump. Everything else is open to a deal. Nothing he says, no matter how contradictory to what he said yesterday, matters to the zombies who are supporting him in the primaries. It shouldn’t be necessary for the Republican establishment to take him down. Republican primary voters should be accomplishing that mission at the polls. Here’s where stupidity intervenes. Cruz acts as if he never heard of separation of church and state. He’s dependent on Biblethumping voters to get him to the White House. In my lifetime, he is the most disliked candidate among his peers. Cruz has a better chance of becoming the next Jerry Falwell than he does of becoming President of the United States. After all, stupidity does have its limits. The Republican establishment candidate is Rubio, he of the problematic salivary glands. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie had Rubio’s number--Marco is a robotic right wing ideologue--a young man with old and demonstrably flawed opinions. If the Republicans couldn’t win with credentialed establishment candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain, the idea that Rubio is their hope in ’16 is sufficient evidence of stupidity. Uncle says Republican primary voters are just pazzo this year. I say too many of them are uninformed, blinded by their anger. Just plain stupid. SPR

he United States Declaration of Independence states “... that all men are created equal. Nobody can boast that soups share the same designation as humans, as most of us can recall some lackluster experiences with unappealing bowls. Joanne Gotto comes to the rescue of residents tired of wretched creations by sharing her recipe for White Bean, Kale, and Chicken Soup. The inhabitant of the 1300 block of Morris Street noted the offering, which makes four to six servings, has won the acclaim of her family. Strive for equality with her kin, and raise your spoons to the East Passyunk Crossing dweller’s generosity. SPR

ost chefs agree it is best to let ingredients speak for themselves. The bartender mixed a fine Bloody Mary ($11), not too spicy and with the right touch of horseradish. I am still trying to figure out why a slice of candied bacon was placed in the drink. The Little Lion’s focus is on Southern food. I have traveled extensively throughout the South and know Southern food is quite simple yet satisfying. The menu is divided into four sections: small shares; Bennys & sweets; ruffage; and plates. It appears Rachael Ray had a hand in determining these headings. We settled into a comfortable booth in the back room. There is a bar with outlets should one need to charge a phone. This is a nice service to offer. From the small plates, we selected fried green tomatoes ($9) and stone-ground grits ($7). Both starters were well done. Several meaty slices of green tomatoes were coated in crumb and deep fried to a crisp golden brown. They were served with bacon jam, buttermilk ranch dressing and pimento cheese. I deemed the dressing unnecessary. A bit of jam and pimento cheese would suffice going forward. The grits were piping hot because they were served in a generous individual cast-iron skillet. I usually prefer my grits straight with lots of butter, salt and pepper. The addition of cheddar cheese was just right. It did not overwhelm the creamy grits. I enjoyed the addition of mustard greens on top of the grits. They were neither mushy nor chewy. The addition of vinegar when cooking greens is a true Southern custom. These were delicious. A bit of bacon came with the greens. Butter lettuce is one of my favorite salad greens. The butter lettuce salad ($11) was thoughtfully split for two in the kitchen. Unfortunately, we received ordinary mesclun blend. There was no butter lettuce in the salad. Endive, thinly-sliced apples and pears with crunchy toasted pecans, tiny crumbles of Stilton cheese, figs, and candied bacon were tossed in a maple cranberry vinaigrette. The salad needed salt and pepper. It was overly sweet and overdressed. There were too many ingredients used in the creation of this dish. I have never heard of pit ham. It, too, was

overly sweet. The ham club sandwich ($11) looked more like tea sandwiches rather than a hefty club. The ingredients listed on the menu are pit ham, smoked bacon, onion spread, butter lettuce, heirloom tomatoes and Swiss cheese served on multi-grain bread. The bread should have been toasted. It was rather cool to the taste. Smoked ham and cheddar quiche ($11) may have been delicious had it not arrived ice cold. It was sitting on a pool of creamy onion sauce that only made the pastry soggy. The potatoes were cold as well. The manager apologized and asked if I wanted another dish. Gently scrambled eggs were a little overdone, but the homemade biscuit was the star of the plate. It was warm and slightly toasted on the outside. I spread on some butter and enjoyed. The pit ham is weird. It is shaved paper thin and way too sweet to my taste. I longed for a serving of good old-fashioned country ham. The manager told us I could order a dish and that it was his treat. Good strong coffee ($2.50) served in oversized cups with a saucer completed our meal. Service was excellent. Our waitress answered our questions and took care of everyone in the room. Although the meal was uneven, I would return to the location. Two tips of the toque to The Little Lion. SPR

ith more than a decade as a resident of the 1900 block of Porter Street, Stacey DiPlacido obviously adores enlisting Girard Estate as her home turf, but her affinity for Bella Vista does not lag far behind. Since 2011, the affable individual has served as the executive chef at The Fitzwater Cafe, 728 S. Seventh St., helping the location to generate considerable renown as an offerer of pleasing plates. “This neighborhood and the characters it has really interest me,â€? the 40-year-old said from her place of employment. “I love that we’re able to create so many connections with our customers and that people are receptive to the feel that we’re going for here.â€? The South Philly native credits her Italian upbringing for her being “obsessed with food.â€? Thanks to her patriarch’s culinary acumen and sessions with female relatives, she knew food preparation would become her calling, though time at Peirce College halted the actualization. “I’m glad that I found my way into this world,â€? the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College alumnus divulged. “I think it’s super cool to be a female in this business, too, and I just want to be the best that I can because I respect food and the ingredients and how they mesh.â€? Having acquired admirable experience at locations such as Caribou Cafe and the since-shuttered Pigalle, DiPlacido came to The Fitzwater Cafe, under the ownership of Richard Santore, also the proprietor of The Saloon Restaurant, 750 S. Seventh St., to further her focus on establishing camaraderie and engendering longevity on the part of the location’s patrons. With ample praise from diners and industry behemoths, the space continually captivates the executive chef, who decided to shares its Crème
BrĂťlĂŠe French Toast recipe. “It’s easily our top item,â€? DiPlacido beamed of the delight, which America’s Best Bites profiled through a Dec. ’11 television segment. “We definitely fetch compliments on it, and that’s a huge plus since French toast is a favorite for so many people.â€? The cafe handles 25 orders for the gem on weekdays and twice that many come Saturday and Sunday. Because of its breakfast identity and dessert qualities on account of the whipped cream and the sauce, she suggests that guests ask for a meat option to forge a balance of salty and sweet elements. “If you stick with just the French toast, though, we think you’ll be pleased,â€? DiPlacido said. “Either way, we’ll be happy to serve you.â€?

The recreation leader bore a constant smile when selling tickets and became the picture of relentless anticipation in discussing how clans can continue to benefit from the tutelage of his peers. “We want to make it a memorable occasion each time someone comes here, the resident of the 1100 block of South Seventh Street said between sales. “Going forward, that’s going to become an even stronger goal for us. The Bella Vista denizen revealed that the organizers will place the night’s proceeds into an account for the construction of a new rink. Because of neighboring development, he and Rizzo staffers know they will soon need a new home, but nobody is approaching the process fearfully. “We’ve had wonderful interactions over the years with local leaders, DiFlorio said of figures that include Mayor Jim Kenney and First District Councilman Mark Squilla. “We’re proud of what we offer here, so the plan, like with stadiums, is to build something new before taking anything down. There’s no definite timeline but being prepared is what we owe to the community since they’re the ones who keep us going. HAVING OPENED IN 1979, Rizzo Rink has established a venerable reputation as a fosterer of dreams and a unifier of families. For the last 31 years, athletic
programs geared toward aiding character development, teaching values, promoting sportsmanship, and seeing successes and setbacks as equally instructional have helped South Philly youths, in particular, to contribute to the fabric of their communities and to become better in numerous pursuits as well, with Beth DeStephanis noticing that Patrick has grown as a listener through his two years as a registrant. “My time here has been great, the St. Monica School student declared as other excited youths walked by to enjoy carnival games, head to the dunk tank, and test their target accuracy skills like National Hockey League players at All-Star Weekend. “I’m always happy when I come to Rizzo Rink. Returning to the ice, he and his sister, who might follow in her sibling’s skates by pursuing hockey, too, flew around the rink with ease and excitement, leading their parents to count their blessings as members of the Rizzo Rink family. Ray DeStephanis, whose Roman Catholic High School Cahillites varsity soccer club made him a happy head coach in winning the Catholic League title last fall, was an especially proud papa as Keira navigated a few tricky turns like an Olympic champion. While the DeStephanis constituents have enjoyed a solid tenure with Rizzo, the Carter family, consisting of father Peter, mother Rita, and their children, 10-year-old Alice and 12-year-old
Bobby, made their first stop at the rink Saturday night. “We heard about the event from some friends and since the kids just finished their time heading to the Blue Cross RiverRink, we thought we’d look into this as a possible way to keep their interest up, Joe Carter said of his offspring. “Judging by what we’re seeing tonight, we made a wise choice. The inhabitants of the 2300 block of Federal Street skated as a foursome, with Alice saying that she wants to take lessons there and “be as good as Dorothy Hamill because she’s my skating hero. Whether nourishing possible professional outlets or simply bonding with family and friends, the attendees at the threehour reminder of Rizzo’s influence on Pennsport and beyond supported DiFlorio’s belief that no matter how committed or competent he and his colleagues are, they need the enthusiasm of patrons to pronounce themselves a viable community presence. “We definitely love supporting Rizzo Rink, Beth DeStephanis said. “As our kids grow older, we want them to continue to see that anything is possible. Their time here is a great reflection of that. ne could say the third time proved the charm for Beth DeStephanis when she made her tertiary appearance at Rizzo Rink, 1001 S. Front St., Saturday evening had her first two experiences there that day not also been incredibly delightful. The resident of the 200 block of Daly Street and her family capped their busy involvement with the revered recreational space by attending the Rally4Rizzo, a fundraiser that will assist in the future erection of a replacement space. “We’re absolutely in love with coming here, the Whitman inhabitant said of her kin’s connection to the Pennsport spot. “It’s such a welcoming environment, and the instruction is fantastic. She and husband Ray, who also took to the ice, beamed as their children, four-year-old Keira and seven-year-old Patrick, joined dozens of youngsters in enjoying a night of late winter wonder. Having already witnessed her daughter’s skating lesson in the morning and her son’s hockey game in the afternoon, she had nothing but praise for the idea to generate money for Rizzo’s sustenance and growth. “I’m also a teacher, so aside from taking joy as a mother in seeing their progress, I evaluate what being here does for their maturation, the matriarch said. “I know Rizzo Rink is having a great effect on them and other children.
