CHECK OUT THE WINNERS IN NEXT WEEK’S EDITION
Cuba Libre Eddie Tully aims to seize the awkward (Part ‘dos’)
I
f you are to believe the tour guides, Hemingway is still revered in Cuba. We visit one of his former homes. We are not allowed inside. We must be content to peer through the windows, and it is difficult to see very much at all. The grounds outside the home are surprisingly not very well maintained. Although I am a fan of Hemingway, the visit is uninspiring. Hemingway won a Pulitzer Prize for his short novel, “The Old Man And The Sea.” We are taken to the small fishing village that inspired his tale of the old man’s struggle to catch a giant marlin. Our visit is brief. The tour guide explains that there is not much to see. Except for the occasional tour bus, it seems that the sleepy life of the village has not been disturbed by the fame of Hemingway’s novel. The ocean glistens. The few Cuban men in the village seem indifferent to our visit. At night, many of the tourists on our ship opt for tours of once-famous night spots such as the Tropicana and Café Paris. We decide to explore on our own. Havana is described as one of the world’s safest cities. And it certainly feels that way. Late in the evening on this weekday night, not much was going on in the main plaza. There are some street musicians, See CARDELLA, page 9>>

Entertainer lost his brother to suicide in 2015, now he’s hoping to help families avoid the same tragic circumstances By TOM BECK SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
S
outh Philly-based entertainer Eddie Tully will receive the “Lifesaver of the Year” award from the Philadelphia chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Friday night, March 9, at the AFSP’s annual Save a Life Gala. Tully lost his brother, Christopher, back in 2015 shortly after it was announced that he was missing. After a three-week search for Christopher, his body was found on the bank of the Schuylkill River. His death was ruled a suicide. “It’s kind of bittersweet,” Tully said of earning the award. “I feel honored to be recognized for spreading the word about suicide prevention and being an advocate for the AFSP, but the tragedy behind it is sad.” Tully, who works as a DJ, has a sizable social media following. He often used his platform to promote AFSP’s message. “Anything we’d do he would promote it through his platform,” said Garden Logan, the publicity chair for AFSP. “He’s a very well known personality in the city. It’s nice to see him jump in and help us. It helps you heal when you help other people.” “Losing a sibling is devastating. My parents losing a child is devastating,” Tully said, who noted that he works hard to help make sure other families don’t have to go through the same thing. “At least I know that my brother didn’t die in vain. Op-Ed Stop the war on deer, urges letter writer
T
South PhillyReview
E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N
he numbers are in for the unrelenting and unjust war on ‘’nuisance’’ deer. Overall, 3,469 deer have been killed since 1999, according to Philadelphia’s Commission on Parks & Recreation. The contract killing of deer by Anthony DeNicola began in Wissahickon Valley Park only. The killing of deer expanded to Pennypack Park in 2001, including Fox Chase Farm. Three more park areas followed later. Pennypack Park alone has seen the deaths of a reported 1,731 deer to date. Since 2001, the federal government has been the deer killer. The numbers themselves tell their own story, one of the ineffectiveness of this onslaught. Deer have been killed not only within park boundaries, but also on land under the jurisdiction of the City of Philadelphia. The killing goes on intermittently over four solid months each winter Ethologist, ecologist and evolutionary biologist Marc Bekoff, Ph. D., once remarked that the word “cull, which is used here, deflects attention from the act of killing and gives a false sense of acceptability. Deer are also demonized using terms like “rats with hooves to make the killing more palatable. This 19-year-long killing spree has perpetuated and reinforced an ingrained and irrational human prejudice against deer. For the last 17 years, the killing of deer has been carried out by a federal taxpayer-supported agency described as a “deer SWAT team, which is euphemistically named Wildlife Services. One congressional representative commented, “That is a world unto itself. And that’s a world we are not allowed to see into. Journalists themselves are barred from witnessing “culls. Philadelphia Advocates for the Deer suggests a healthy dose of reality on the matter. Think good riddance to the propaganda which has fueled this onslaught. Open hearts and minds to a deer’s life experience. Take an honest look at deer biology/ ecology, which together will do wonders to engender appreciation, empathy and respect for these abused animals. Don’t miss mention of the many ecological benefits of deer, information the pro-kill camp won’t disseminate. And, of course, we humans must own our role in all of this. Interestingly, in its own brochure, Living With Deer, Montana’s state wildlife agency states, “The best solution may be a greater understanding and tolerance of deer. To be noted is the preparation for the killing which includes baiting with corn, sometimes
placed dangerously close to busy roads. This practice presents a risk to motorists as well as deer. Baiting also concentrates deer in small areas where disease can be spread. What’s more, ingesting corn can kill a deer in days or weeks later due to complications. The sudden (keyword sudden) introduction of this carb for consumption is potentially toxic because it cannot be properly digested at the time. Any of these actualities may be considered unintended consequences or collateral issues. The cost of doing business perhaps. It’s been said that the greatest danger to the future of all wildlife is apathy. Complacency is enabling this horror and equals consent. Where’s the outrage? Bridget Irons Chestnut Hill

TULLY: South Philly man lauded for suicide awareness efforts
<<Continued from page 1 At least someone else doesn’t have to go through this tragedy.” Tully talked a lot about the stigma behind talking about suicide. He likens it to a disease or an illness, like Alzheimer’s or lung cancer. There’s no stigma about talking about it if you have those sorts of diseases. Why should there be stigma if you’re suffering from depression? “Just like any other illness that attacks the body, it’s something that can be healed and prevented,” he said. “I think all people suffer from depression in some way, shape or form and it’s hard for some people to identify it early on.” Tully thanked the AFSP for helping mold a message that would leave an impression on people. “I think understanding the warning signs, being able to open up the dialogue, I think the AFSP has helped me get that message out to people,” Tully said. The AFSP has recently launched a campaign called Seize the Awkward, which is about empowering young adults to use an awkward moment as a time to jump in and talk about issues that might seem tough at first. “The conversation may be messy or awkward – but opening up can be a good thing,” said Stephanie Coggin, vice president of communications and marketing for AFSP, in an email to the Review. “When it comes to mental health, awkward silences don’t have to be a bad thing. Embrace the
awkwardness and use it as an opportunity to reach out to a friend.” According to Coggin, 76 percent of the time when teens are struggling with something, they’ll talk about it with their friends first. Through research, the AFSP learned there was a readiness among the 16 to 24 age group to do something, but they needed the tools to recognize risks and warning signs, how to have a conversation and how to get to support and resources. She said it was important to “trust your gut” when bringing up the subject around other people. “If you notice that a friend or family member is acting differently than they normally do – ask them ‘Seems like you haven’t been yourself lately. What’s up?’ or ‘Are you OK? I’m here if you want to talk.’ Listen. Follow-up. Stay in touch.” Tully said one of his favorite memories of his brother Chris was the 10-year New Year’s Day tradition they started in 2004 of giving a six-foot tall trophy to “the people’s favorite” Mummers String Band. “We tried to bring it back to the street and literally have the people in the cold vote on who their favorite string band [was]. Every year we gave away a trophy to South Philly’s favorite string band.” If you or someone you know is going through a hard time and contemplating suicide, call 1-800273-TALK. e’ve gotten so accustomed to calling it Ss.Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., that we need an old-time photo to remind us of the all-girls school, St. Maria Goretti. Fast forward to present day and the girls basketball team is ready to chase another championship — the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA crown. is not trimmed and looks unkempt. We dutifully follow the guide along a narrow dirt path where we are interrupted frequently by tour buses trying to get to the parking area. I am still distracted by the students’ concert we just attended. From this day forward, I will always think of Cuba and those kids anytime I hear “Yesterday.â€? Cuba Libre is a simple mixed drink. Cuban rum in Coca-Cola, a twist of lime, and maybe some Angostura bitters. Cuba Libre translates to “Free Cuba.â€? But despite its charm and the smiling, unfailingly courteous Cubans we met, Cuba is not yet free. Raul Castro, we are told is expected to “retireâ€? on April 19 of this year. Fidel’s brother loosened some of the chains on his people. Our guide tells us proudly that Cubans can now buy and sell houses. Some elements of private enterprise have emerged. And the Castros have been lauded for their national health-care program. I am told that Cuba exports doctors these days. Ironically, the restored capitol of Cuba’s government overlooks a square surrounded by aging structures. Perhaps Raul is reminded every day of his failed promises. Along our tour, many hospitals and clinics are pointed out with pride. One of the guides tells their tour that even facelifts and transgender surgeries are free. As is the Cuban educational system, including higher education. Those who can’t qualify educationally for college are sent to trade schools. But unemployment is high. In the plazas, you can see men sitting on curbs or walking idly in the streets. Cuba has its homeless too. Once the Soviet Union could no longer support Cuba, the Revolution was exposed as a failure. Cuba is an island of broken promises. The American embargo also failed. Cuba is still a communist dictatorship. The Cuban people are the victims. Even her best baseball players have deserted her. Cuba deserves better. She deserves better than Batista or the Castros. Those kids playing “Yesterdayâ€? deserve better. Cubans are resilient. Cuba Libre! Free Cuba!

<<Continued from page 1 and small crowds gathered at several of the cafes. Our feet quickly tell us that they have had enough walking on cobblestone. We call it a night and return to our cruise ship. The next day we will spend at sea. And then we will head for Cienfuegos, Cuba. It turned out to be worthwhile. Despite the restrictions on our travel to Cuba, immigration enforcement is surprisingly relaxed. You are whisked through the metal detectors staffed by an almost totally female workforce. The women are pretty and young, their uniforms are short tight-fitting skirts and black patterned stockings. Yes, I noticed. There is no restriction, incidentally, on the amount of alcohol and cigars a tourist can bring home. The America First theme of the Trump Administration has not imposed restrictions. Yet. It is another day and that means another eighthour mandatory tour (although because of the ship’s cruise schedule, the time of the tour is considerably shortened). Upon entering the terminal at Cienfuegos, we are separated into groups for various cultural exhibits. We are seated in a modest, nondescript building. The room contains an empty bar. We are treated to a concert by five Cuban college students. The group is collectively known as Avanti. Four of the students are female. The instrumentation is various woodwinds, plus a French horn. The kids are bright, attractive and talented. Eager to please us with their skill. Their program is mostly classical and Cuban in origin. Each student takes a turn introducing the selections. And as a nod to the West, the kids include “Elephant Walk by Henry Mancini and “Yesterday by Paul McCartney. Looking at these kids, you can see the promise of Cuba. You hope they will become the generation that will see that promise finally fulfilled. The main attraction in Cienfuegos is the botanical gardens. We see many beautiful and interesting varieties of trees. But strangely, the “gardens aren’t gardens at all in the strictest sense. The grass

t’s that time of year in which high school seniors are finalizing college decisions. Younger students are likely proud of the strides they have made in the classroom from September to now. Others may have faced personal hardships that presented unexpected challenges in and out of the classroom. No matter what the story is, each of these students is very deserving of recognition. Teachers, counselors and administrators, do you have a Rising Star in your classroom? If yes, it’s time to share the stories of these first graders through high school seniors you feel are worthy of Rising Star consideration. The South Philly Review and Grays Ferry-based Young Chances Foundation are once again teaming up to recognize your standout candidates. The only requirement is the student must reside in South Philly or attend a South Philly school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 Zip Codes. Parents and guardians, we know you believe your child is well deserving of being included on this list, but nominations need to come from the school. Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are

We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. If you have a Rising Star who fits the bill, send us a nomination letter, 250 to 350 words, describing what makes your candidate stand out from the pack. What is the reason(s) for nominating this student? What academic achievements has this student achieved during the 2017-18 school year? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? These are just a few questions meant to help get the conversation started. All of the nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee, with the winners appearing in the special June 6 Rising Stars edition. Please submit nominations by Tuesday, April 30. Nominations can be submitted via email, news@ southphillyreview.com, or mail, South Philly Review, attention Bill Gelman, 2 Executive Campus, Suite 400, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.

Donatucci seeking reelection to Pa. House’s 185th District
tate Rep. Maria P. Donatucci of Philadelphia, announced she is seeking her fifth term serving residents of the 185th Legislative District in the Pennsylvania House t of Representatives. y “Representing the 185th district has been a e great joy and passion of mine. It is an honor to be o a voice for Philadelphia and Delaware County in s Harrisburg. In the most recent legislative session, h I have had the distinguished honor of serving as t chair of the Philadelphia Delegation where I’ve had additional opportunities to play a more inte, gral role in preserving and protecting the interests s of our great city of Philadelphia,” Donatucci said. d Born and raised in South Philadelphia, she first o took office following her special election win in - February 2011, filling the seat vacated by her late n husband, Robert Donatucci who represented the district from 1980 until his untimely passing in November 2010. t Donatucci is a member of the Appropriations, e Labor and Industry, Liquor Control, Transporta- tion and Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees. The fourth-term legislator
credits her membership on these committees with giving her a seat at the table to directly impact key legislative initiatives that allow her to continue to fight for workers’ rights and advocate for improved public safety, common-sense gun safety measures, and education. DONATUCCI “I am privileged to support a variety of meaningful and diverse legislative initiatives. I will continue my support of unions and to fight for working families to enjoy living wages, equal pay for equal work, and paid sick leave,” said Donatucci. Protecting Pennsylvania’s most vulnerable citizens, including senior citizens and children, is also among her legislative priorities. “I look forward to a positive campaign, meeting residents of the district and learning more about how I can best serve their interests at home and in Harrisburg,” said Donatucci.

Out of sight, out of mind ‘The Vanishing of Sidney Hall’ tries to tell story of a wayward author’s befuddled life, but the true mystery lies in what exactly went wrong behind the camera By Logan Krum SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
T
he year 2018 is becoming a blockbuster season. By the time April comes, audiences will have already been clobbered by a rampage of giant animals, interdimensional travel and an alien invasion. Which is why a quieter release like “The Vanishing of Sidney Hall seems appealing right now. It was released at the beginning of March by the remarkably consistent A24, whom we can thank for “A Ghost Story, “Lady Bird and “The Disaster Artist, among many others, just last year. The film’s complicated structure asks viewers to follow the life of an author battling demons at three different points in his life, interweaved sporadically rather than chronologically. The ambition, and it is a lofty one, is to pose one question: What went wrong with Sidney Hall? Unfortunately, viewers are more likely to ask, what went wrong with “Sidney Hall? It’s a big question, because most of the pieces seem like they’ll work. The premise itself is an irresistible mystery box. The film opens as Hall (Logan Lerman) reads out a grotesquely sexual creative writing piece to his high school class-

mates, who listen in bemusement. He wants to be a writer when he grows up – and, apparently, he succeeds, because not long after we flash forward

a few years to his very own book signing for his debut novel. We’re asked to follow a lot at the same time. We see the beginning of a somewhat off-putting romance with his next-door neighbor (Elle Fanning) as we watch their marriage crumble years down the line. We see a classmate approach Hall for a mysterious favor as the premise of Hall’s debut novel resembles the classmate. We also see an unnamed detective attempting to track down Hall in the furthest timeline, where Hall has lived up to the film’s title. The complex knots might be too difficult for director and co-writer Shawn Christensen to untangle in his second feature directorial project. Ultimately, the movie’s head-scratching structure doesn’t prove to be necessary, and probably would have been better in a chronological flow. Christensen appears to be ahead of himself in trying to use time as a storytelling device. It’s rarely done or pulled off – Christopher Nolan’s “Memento, 2000, is among the most notable examples of a movie with events that peel backward. Whereas “Memento “simmers into an explosion at its ending-beginning in a way that rewards rewatch, “Sidney Hall “simply withholds information from the viewer as a substitution for clever-
ness. At 26, Lerman has moved past teen films like the “Percy Jackson series and “Perks of Being a Wallflower and into deeper stuff like 2014’s intense war story “Fury. Here is the first time his cracks are on display – while solid in the tormented teenager/young adult phases (his forte), he’s less believable as a surrendered adult. The wig and fake beard don’t help. Fanning’s portion of the script has her behave like no human ever has – she leaves Hall fan letters for his stories published in a school newspaper she doesn’t go to, and mutely scampers away when he spots her at his mailbox. She does seem to adapt to the tri-timeline challenge with more poise than Lerman once she’s afforded realism. The film isn’t irredeemable. Darren Morze’s music is beautiful, swelling at the exact right moments. At every 30-minute mark, the film weaves together significant events from each timeline. Sabine Hoffman’s editing giving a bravado of importance. It’s just a shame Christensen chooses to reveal unimpactful information at these moments. The story is too far ahead of Christensen – too much of what’s unimportant is developed early, and key information isn’t revealed until too late. Clever plotting is one thing. This just isn’t fair.

Let the local high school March Madness begin South Philly is well-represented in the PIAA basketball tournament that tips off Friday By Bill Gelman
PIAA Schedule
SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW
C
an they do it again? The “they” would be the Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School boys basketball team – the defending AAA champs. The Saints enter Pennsylvania’s high school version of March Madness riding a streak of four straight state titles. The squad will begin its latest championship pursuit on Saturday (March 10) at a familiar site – Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philly. The 18-6 Saints, who are the No. 1 seed out of District 12, will open tournament play against SteeltonHighspire out of District 3. Tip is 5 p.m. Neumann-Goretti, 1736 S. 10th St., is hungry for another title after falling to St. Joe’s Prep in last month’s home Catholic League quarterfinal game. They turned things around last weekend by winning the District 12 AAA championship with a 78-49 victory over Dobbins. Should the Saints return to the state final, they would play at the Giant Center in Hershey on Saturday, March 24 at 2 p.m. Mastery South, 927 Johnston St., also made the field. The 14-8 squad will take the court on Saturday against Wyoming Seminary, the No. 1 seed out of District 2. Tip time is 6 p.m. at Wilkes University in Wilkes-Barre. The opposition enters the contest with a 21-4 record. The winner will play again on Tuesday against the winner of the NeumannGoretti/Steelton-Highspire contest. The Academy at Palumbo, 1100 Catharine St., girls basketball team will travel to Freedom High School in Bethlehem on Saturday for a PIAA 5A firstround game against Southern Lehigh out of District 11. Game time is 6 p.m. The local squad enters postseason play with an 8-12 record while the Spartans are 24-2. The Universal Audenried High School, 3301 Tasker St., girls basketball team has secured a spot in the 4A bracket, and will open tournament play on Saturday against Lower Moreland out of District 1. Tip is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Jefferson University. The Grays Ferry-based squad is 15-10, which includes a 66-33 loss to Bonner-Prendie in

Neumann-Goretti junior guard Kiara Koger advances the ball during the Catholic League championship game last week. Saturday’s District 12 4A championship game. Prep Charter High School, 1928 Point Breeze Ave., is also representing South Philly in the 4A bracket. Like Audenried, the 13-6 squad has a firstround game on Saturday against Bishop McDevitt out of District 3. The Lady
Huskies will travel to Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg. Tip is 4:30 p.m. Should any of the local teams advance to the second-round, games will be played on Wednesday (March 14) at a site and time to be determined. The Neumann-Goretti girls basket-
ball team enters the PIAA tournament ready to turn things around after dropping back-to back games. The more recent defeat came at the hands of Public League champion Imhotep Charter, 62-59 in overtime, in Saturday’s District 12 3A championship game. But the PIAA tournament provides
the 17-7 Saints with a fresh start as they begin pursuit of a fourth-straight championship. Neumann-Goretti, the No. 2 seed out of District 12, will travel to Jefferson University on Friday (March 9) for their opening-round contest against 19-7 Pine Grove. Tip is 6 p.m. The girls 3A second-round game will follow a Tuesday-Friday format, with the final taking place March 22 at the Giant Center in Hershey. NeumannGoretti and Imhotep, District 12’s No. 1 seed, could meet again in the semi-final round on Monday, March 19. Time and location will be determined at a later date. The bracket also includes another South Philly school in 19-1 Mastery South. The Public League squad will travel to West York High School for a 6:30 p.m. game against 13-13 York Catholic out of District 3.

EAGLES INSIDER
Strong roster core gives Eagles an edge next season
B
etween now and when the NFL free-agency period opens on March 14, you’re going to hear a lot about the players the Eagles are going to lose and the players that they can’t afford and perhaps even about a rumored trade scenario or three to consider. Don’t let that stuff take away what’s important: The Eagles, even as they are crunched up against the salary-cap wall and will be incredibly challenged to hang on to the handful of major contributors who are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents, have an enviable roster situation that should allow them to contend in 2018. “Look, we know we have a lot of work to do. We know that we can’t sit around with a smile on our faces because we won the Super Bowl and think everything is going to be fine next year, Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said. “At the same time, we have a roster that we like very much. We have a great situ-
Dave
Spadaro
ation at quarterback. We have running backs under contract who were extremely productive for us. We have both lines of scrimmage signed through next year, a group of wide receivers that we’re excited about and a secondary that we think is growing together. “At the end of the day, we’re going to continue to build the roster by being creative and adding talent and at the same time developing the talent we have on
the roster. Put this Eagles team on the field right now – minus the projected unrestricted free agents – and match up against the rest of the NFC East and maybe even the entire NFC in the same scenario and the Eagles would look pretty good, right? Led by their quarterback picture, with young star Carson Wentz rehabbing his knee injury, with Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Nick Foles under contract through 2018 and with third-string-
er Nate Sudfeld, who Roseman said at the NFL Scouting Combine last week had “starting upside as a quarterback in this league, and you understand why the Eagles are optimistic. They’ve got Jay Ajayi and Corey Clement in the backfield. The wide receivers are all under contract and two of the kids, Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson, are expected to take big steps forward, just like the entire 2017 rookie class.
If winning at the line of scrimmage is what matters in the NFL, then the Eagles are in line to win big again. They return an intact offensive line. The defensive line is stacked with the starters and second-year man Derek Barnett vying for more playing time in Year 2. It is true, though, that salary-cap space is at a premium. That Roseman and the Eagles were able to wheel and deal and maneuver and bring in as much help as they did last year was remarkable, and a primary reason Roseman was named the NFL’s Executive of the Year by the Pro Football Writers’ Association. What should you expect when free agency starts on March 14? Truthfully, not much. But I said the same thing last year and Roseman proved to be a wizard. The Eagles may add a player here and there, but they’re largely going to go with what they have, and what they have is a roster that is in need of some help, no question about that, but also one that is chock full of talent and promise.

he legacy of Roy Halladay will now have a permanent mark in Phillies history, as he will posthumously be inducted into the 2018 Phillies Toyota Wall of Fame on Saturday, Aug. 4, at Citizens Bank Park, 1 Citizens Bank Way. “This will be a very emotional evening as we not only honor the memory of Roy Halladay, but also pay tribute to his extraordinary accomplishments on the mound as he becomes the 39th inductee of the Phillies Wall of Fame, said David Buck, Phillies executive vice president. The induction ceremony will take place prior to the 7:05 p.m. game at Citizens Bank Park during Toyota Phillies Alumni Weekend festivities taking place Aug. 2-5. Phillies players who were part of Halladay’s career, as well as Halladay’s family, will participate in the ceremony to honor the beloved “Doc. Halladay, who died tragically in November 2017 at the age of 40 after his plane crashed into the Gulf of Mexico, will be one of only four Phillies to be inducted into the Wall of Fame without a fan vote, joining Charlie Manuel, Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton. To be a member of the Wall of Fame is one of the highest honors bestowed upon a Phillie. “Braden, Ryan and I are so honored to have Roy remembered in this way, said Brandy
Halladay. “He will be in great company with other Phillies legends who are on the Wall of Fame. The decision made by the Phillies to induct Roy without a fan vote makes it even more meaningful. I look forward to fans and the community coming out to celebrate this special occasion with us. In addition to the Wall of Fame ceremony, a flag bearing his No. 34 will be flown at Citizens Bank Park for the 2018 season as a tribute to Halladay’s contributions to the club. Halladay amassed numerous accolades in his four seasons with the Phillies (2010-13) and overall in his career. On May 29, 2010, Halladay pitched the 20th perfect game in Major League Baseball history, as the Phillies beat the Florida Marlins, 1-0. It was the second perfect game in Phillies history (Jim Bunning pitched the other on June 21, 1964). On Oct. 6, 2010, in his first postseason start, Halladay threw the second no-hitter in postseason history against the Cincinnati Reds in Game 1 of the NLDS. Halladay is the only pitcher who has tossed a regular-season nohitter and a postseason no-hitter in the same year. During his four seasons with the Phillies, Halladay won the ‘10 Cy Young Award and was selected to two All-Star teams, including being named the starting pitcher in ’11. He also led all major league pitchers in complete
games (18) and ranked fourth in the National League in wins (55). Joining Halladay on the Wall of Fame will be Pat Gillick, who will be the first executive inductee into the Wall of Fame. “The decision to honor Pat Gillick as the inaugural executive on the Wall of Fame was a unanimous one for the Phillies, said Buck. “Pat’s illustrious career and impact on the game is one to be celebrated with fans, and we look forward to recognizing his amazing contributions to baseball on this historic day. Gillick is in his 13th year with the Phillies. In that time, he has served as the team’s general manager and president, and also as a senior advisor. He originally joined the Phillies as senior vice president and general manager on Nov. 2, 2005. During his time as GM, he built the club into back-to-back NL East champions (200708) and ’08 World Champions. The championship was the third of his 27-year career as a major league general manager and the second in the history of the Phillies franchise (the other being 1980). He was also inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2011, becoming just the fourth individual elected whose career has been defined nearly exclusively as a team architect.

NOTICE OF PROPOSED GAS COST RATE INCREASE To Our Customers: As part of its annual Gas Cost Rate (GCR) filing, Philadelphia Gas Works (PGW) is filing a request with the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) to increase the GCR portion of your bill effective September 1, 2018. Customers are notified of the annual rate increase or decrease by providing this notice for the annual GCR filing on March 1. PGW is requesting a projected rate increase of $0.1512 per one thousand cubic feet (Mcf) based upon a comparison between the GCR effective March 1, 2018 ($3.8857 per Mcf) and the projected rate in its annual GCR filing ($4.0369 per Mcf). This notice describes PGW’s gas cost rate request, the PUC’s role, and what actions you can take. The GCR is designed to recover the cost of natural gas that PGW purchases from gas suppliers and does not include a profit margin. The rate will be recalculated to show actual costs on a quarterly basis. Customers are notified of this quarterly rate recalculation by a message on each customer’s bill after the dates of each quarterly filing. The quarterly filing dates are March 1, June 1, September 1, and December 1. The rate may change if the recalculated rate is different by more than 2% from the rate that is approved. PGW Gas Cost Rate Increase PGW has requested an overall rate increase of approximately $4.8 million per year. If PGW’s entire request is approved, the total bill for a typical General Service (GS) Residential Heating Customer using 76 thousand cubic feet (Mcf) of natural gas per year would increase from $101 to $102 per month or by approximately 0.9%. The total bill for a typical GS Commercial Heating Customer using 338 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $351 to $356 per month or by approximately 1.2%. The total bill for a typical GS Industrial Heating Customer using 742 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $783 to $793 per month or by approximately 1.2%. The total bill for a typical Municipal Service (MS) Heating Customer using 1,239 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $1,146 to $1,162 per month or by approximately 1.4%. The total bill for a typical Philadelphia Housing Authority (PHA) Heating Customer using 238 Mcf of natural gas per year would increase from $258 to $261 per month or by approximately 1.2%. To find out your customer class or how the requested increase may affect GS, MS, and PHA bills, contact PGW at 215-235-1000. The rates requested by PGW may be found in PGW Gas Service Tariff Number 2. You may examine the material filed with the PUC, which explains the requested increase and the reasons for it. A copy of this material is kept at PGW’s Main Office at 800 W. Montgomery Avenue, Philadelphia, PA, and can be reviewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. It is also available at www.pgworks.com. The PUC’s Role The PUC is the state agency that approves rates for PGW. The PUC will examine the requested rate increase and can prevent existing rates from changing until it investigates the request. PGW must prove that the requested rates are reasonable. After examining the evidence, the PUC may grant all, some, or none of the request. The PUC may change the amount of the rate increase requested by PGW for each customer class. As a result, the rate charged to you may be different than the rate requested by PGW and shown above. Actions You Can Take to Challenge PGW’s Request to Increase its Rates ADULT SERVICES Adult Miscellaneous
