It couldn’t have been Tom Cardella Mom. She’s been gone quite a while now. Maybe I only thought I saw her. But it sure looked like her. Her birthday was on March 7. Maybe our memories are like alarm clocks set to go off at certain times to make certain that we don’t forget people we love. It’s not unusual for me to think I see loved ones long after they have gone. I don’t know how many times I think I’ve seen Dad driving around town. His white hair peeking out from the Jeff cap tilted on his head. Wearing his tan Members Only jacket. Serious behind the wheel. yon, with its wide open spaces and paucity of public amenities. Even the port-o-potties can seem miles away. This year, event organizers are striving for more of a cozy, old Dublin tone and have rerouted the festive mile-long march for the first time in more than two decades. The shops, pubs and restaurants of Market East, along with City Hall, Dilworth Park and Independence Hall, will be the new backdrop for a tradition that pre-dates the nation it-

self. “We’re going to be on this route for the next two years, that’s for sure. And as a board we’d like to stay here for a long time, Bill Ivers, president of the St. Patrick’s Day Observance Association, said. The parade, which will include a strong South Philly representation, is taking place on Sunday (March 12) at noon. Second Street Irish Society Pipes & Drums, Second ASS >/@/23 ^OUS & ,,

Toruk is making its Philadelphia premiere through Sunday, March 12, at the Wells Fargo Center. The show is inspired by James Cameron’s record-breaking 2009 fantasy/science fiction movie “Avatar. “Our show is a prequel to the film, Gagnon said in a phone interview from Cleveland, where “Toruk played before Philadelphia.

There are 40 artists in the cast — consisting of one actor, one singer, one percussionist, one kite specialist, one boomerang specialist, one contortionist, six puppeteers and 28 acrobats. The stage is 85-by-162 feet. Twenty-five semi-trucks are needed to transport all of the on-stage and behind-the-scenes equipment. Forty video projectors are in use. “It’s a really large show. It takes up the whole hockey rink, said Gagnon, who will head to Hartford, Connecticut and Dayton, Ohio for shows after the Philadelphia run. The show mixes visuals, puppetry and stagecraft with a cinematic score. It takes place on the moon of Pandora, thousands of years before the events depicted in Avatar and before any humans set foot on Pandora. The show follows the story of three young Na’vi adults and the first flight of the great Toruk creature that rules the Pandoran sky with its 40-foot wingspan. It is narrated by

a Na’vi storyteller. Large-scale effects include an earthquake, a starry sky, ocean waves and a volcano eruption. To bring audience involvement to a new level, Cirque du Soleil has launched an app. Gagnon encourages all guests to download the app. “It helps the whole audience get immersed in the show, she said. Gagnon plays one of the Na’vi, a race of extraterrestrial humanoids who inhabit Pandora. They are about 10 feet tall, with long tails, pointed ears, triangular faces, flat noses, golden eyes and eight fingers and eight toes. Gagnon and the other Na’vi speak in a language invented by USC linguistics professor Paul Frommer. “It’s really exciting to play, she said. Gagnon described the show as being for everyone, from kids to senior citizens. “It’s definitely an immersive experience,

she said. Gagnon will be coming to Philadelphia for the first time. She’s looking to do some touring, and also plans to check out some local coffee shops and yoga studios. “I’m really excited to see the city, she said. “It’s exciting to explore each city. In all, there will be seven shows: Thursday at 7:30 p.m.; Friday at 3:30 and 7:30 p.m.; Saturday at 4 and 8 p.m.; and Sunday at 1 and 5 p.m. A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

here is no doubt about it, South Philly is a foodie mecca. Name a food — we are talking burgers, cheesesteaks, crab cakes, gravy, water ice — and you will likely find several satisfying options between South Street and the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Picking a favorite place may not be as easy as it sounds. You could easily create an NCAA Tournament-like bracket filled with the top places from around the south side of town. Who would get the No. 1 seed in the cheesesteak bracket? Let’s leave that field-of-64 scenario to the NCAA selection committee. After all, Selection Sunday is just days away. Local basketball fans will soon find out where and when the defending NCAA champion Villanova Wildcats will be playing next week. But the basketball conversation and debate can be saved for when you are filling out the office pool.

Back to food. Tallying votes for food places in each of the categories was far from an easy task. You may notice that this week’s ballot looks slightly different from the previous version. Yes, even newspapers can have an Oscar-like mixup. There are countless places deserving of a spot on the ballot, but there is only room for five per category. Now, it’s up to you, our loyal readers, to weigh in on these tasty topics. The final say is in your hands. There may be some foods your avoid, and that’s fine. Skip the category. Weigh in on as many categories as you would like — this is meant to be something fresh and fun. The ballot will appear in the next two issues (March 16 and 23), too. Voting can also be done via e-mail (bgelman@ bsmphilly, com) or by visiting southphillyreview.com/contests. Each of the 32 winners and their winning item will be featured in the special Food

Issue, hitting doorsteps April 20. There is a special event in the planning stages, and we will announce the details once they are available. All previously submitted ballots will count in the voting process. Now that we have set the table for this exciting issue, it’s time to sit down and start voting (see page 10). If you prefer voting online, visit southphillyreview.com/contests. The submission deadline is 5 p.m. March 27. -By Bill Gelman

Rediscovering FDR Park To the Editor: Last week’s cover photo of Friends having Fun in FDR Park (March 2) says it all! Your blood pressure will lower and your Joy Index will skyrocket when you come down to the serene, safe and peaceful FDR Park. Did you know we have the only fishable (‘catch & release’) lake in Philadelphia? Have you visited the gorgeous American Swedish Historic Museum (available for tours, weddings and special events)? FDR has golf and tennis — including lessons for both. There is a world -famous skate-park, and more species of birds than you can imagine. Bike, Boat & Surrey rentals start again mid-April. FDR Park has fresh air, happy people and many volunteers and partners who work hard every single day to improve the park for all to enjoy. Please come down, especially if you have not been here in years. FDR Park is cleaner, safer and more lively than you remember. Sign up for news alerts (fdrpark.

Vote out soda tax supporters To the Editor: As everyone may have read about, Pepsi is laying off 80 to 100 workers due to the beverage tax. This was, in a word, predictable. The interesting point is the typical liberal class warfare-type answer from Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney and his administration. Here are their comments. “The soda industry sunk to a new low today, city spokeswoman Lauren Hitt said. “They are literally holding hostage the jobs of hard-working people in their battle to overturn the tax. Pepsi reported nearly $35 billion in gross income and $6 billion in profit last year.... The idea that they can afford to do that but ‘must lay off workers’ should make every Philadelphian very skeptical of whether these layoffs are actually due to the tax. This shows the arrogance and lack of accountability from our mayor. It is obvious that he and 13 members of City Council don’t care what effect this tax has on the residents of Philadelphia. As I have said before, only the voters can hold these people accountable. I hope the residents of Philadelphia see what is going on in front of them and make a choice in upcoming elections to vote for people who are in it for the people. David Lee Northeast Philly

PARADE continued from page 1 Street Irish Society Step Dancers, St. Gabriel’s Irish Society, the Grays Ferry Irish Society and the Second & Jackson Irish Association will all be marching. Although other cities, namely Boston and New York, lay claim to the oldest St. Patrick’s Day parades in the world, Ivers is convinced that Philadelphia is the rightful holder of that title. Philly’s public march began in 1771, whereas previous observances in other cities were generally private religious affairs befitting a feast day for Ireland’s patron saint. By contrast, Philadelphia’s very public parade has grown to include about 200 marching groups ranging in size from a couple dozen to several hundred. And perhaps 80,000 spectators will line the route, which will begin at 16th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard, circle the south side of City Hall and proceed eastward on Market Street to Fifth. CARDELLA continued from page 1 acknowledge that I’m there. They just go about their business, whatever that business is when you’re gone. You would think if they were ghosts they could at least wave or nod in my direction. Sometimes I catch up to these visions, and they don’t look anything like the people I have mistaken them for. Mistaken identity, not ghosts. It’s the times I lose them in a crowd or see them riding a bus that passes me by — when I never do see who they actually are — those are the times that haunt me just a little. And then I settle back into whatever routine I’m in that day. It’s the same way when we see loved ones in our dreams. Vivid. Like they’re reaching out to us. Sometimes to comfort us. Sometimes to warn us. So real we could touch them. Dreams that stay with us through the rest of the day. I think they bother us — or I guess you could say haunt us — more than if we’d seen them on a busy street corner. I remember one time — I guess I was 8 or 9 years old — walking somewhere with my parents. Something was bothering me and I blurted it out. “Suppose we’re just part of a giant’s dream?,â€? I said to them. Both of my parents looked at me kind of puzzled. Mom was always the more expressive of the two. I think Dad always thought I was kind of weird, but I always knew he loved me ‌ even when he showed it by shadow boxing with me, much to my annoyance. “Does that thought scare you,â€? she wanted to know. “Well, yes,â€? I remember replying. “What happens when he wakes up?â€? I’ve revisited my childhood concern from time to time during my life (I think Dad was right. I am kind of weird). I don’t always find the thought of being part of a giant’s dream frightening anymore. Some-

times when life gets tough or somebody gets elected president who you think has us on the road to destruction, it can be comforting to realize that all the scary things were just part of the dream of some giant. When the giant wakes up, we wake up from our nightmare and vanish into nothingness. Sometimes nothingness can be a good thing, can’t it? Have you ever been in a hospital with a loved one who’s just died? I was once. It was on a sunny day in May. The family packed up his things and put them in a bag. We left and walked out into the blinding sunshine of a beautiful spring day that had just been rendered meaningless. I sensed that all of us felt as if we had left our loved one behind. For years after I passed that hospital, I would get the urge to take that elevator up to his hospital room. Just to look inside the room and satisfy myself that he wasn’t still laying there. I never did. But it was then that I realized that death doesn’t always bring closure. Maybe nothing brings closure. The day was overcast. The wind still had a bit of winter’s bite. Like most human beings, I put depressing thoughts out of my head. Concentrated on the few things I had to pick up at Trader Joe’s. Soon, the sun peeked out from behind a cloud. I thought about the fact that in less than a month another baseball season would roll around. The chances of late-season snow diminished by the day. Trader Joe’s was crowded. They were out of the chunky no-stir peanut butter. I found the fresh tasting orange juice. The one I love so much. “Gently pasteurized to extend the shelf life. Life was good. Maybe the new guy in the White House would figure out just enough about governing so we could survive his four years in office. The ghosts had disappeared. And the giant was still sleeping.

For those looking to make this treat extra special, Pecca suggests making extra glaze, and pour it over vanilla ice cream.

ean Arsenault is pouring a pint of Old Stoop Rye Ale. His wife, Erica, is making change at the counter. His twin brother, Andy, is sanitizing metal fittings from one of the fermenters. The tasting room is packed with couples draining pints and diving into plates from a food truck parked out front. This is the weekend routine at Brewery ARS, the new micro that opened earlier this year at 1927-29 West Passyunk Ave. Small and hyper-local, it’s open for business just a handful of hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, serving fresh, very well made beer brewed in batches that can be measured in gallons, not barrels. “We’re not looking to take over the world, says Andy, showing off a tidy line of stainless steel tanks. “We just want to make good beer. Ah, the optimistic mantra of startups: If only I make a high-quality product, customers will beat a path to my door. Lately, skeptics have clucked that that’s not enough — that the explosive growth in small breweries across America has made it impossible for start-ups to get a foothold. How can a small company find room on the beer shelf in an industry controlled by a cutthroat distribution network? It’s even harder when those shelves are lined with the likes of Goose Island IPA,

Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager, Elysian Zephyrus Pilsner and Breckenridge Vanilla Porter — all made by AnheuserBusch. Yet, on this cold, sunny afternoon, I can see a future for small brewing here at Brewery ARS. That’s largely because of its scale. Though the brothers are ambitious, this is not a huge operation with a high overhead. It’s a storefront carved out of a former mechanic’s garage and tucked in among small shops and rowhouses. The neighborhood is changing from its traditional South Philly ethnic base as it attracts young couples priced out of Center City, yet it bears little resemblance to far trendier East Passyunk Avenue on the other side of Broad. With a scarce supply of nearby on-street parking, the room is filled with mainly locals who walked here: young guys in ironic fedoras and women in ski caps, some with their kids in strollers. The tap list is a row of cartoonish sketches drawn by Sean: World’s Apart American Pale Ale, Antique’n Simcoe Ale, Ashland Robust Porter, Wayne’s Pale Ale. “That’s named for our father, he says. “A portion of the profits go to Parkinson’s research, which he has. The vibe is easy and lowkey. “Chloroform by the French rock band Phoenix is playing on the Bluetooth speaker. People are eating and drinking and talking, but this does not feel like a bar. The beer was brewed on the premises, but this does not feel like a brewpub. It is soft-spoken and unpretentious, and most of all it feels like a part of the neighborhood. On a day when Trump is roiling America with another series of caustic Tweets, the tasting room feels like an oasis. Nursing my Old Stoop, a bitter, aromatic ale with the kind of balance and clean finish that shows off the brewery’s focus on quality, I can’t help but think that Philly could use more places like this. he most consistent thing about the 2016/17 Sixers is their inconsistency, not to mention a stunning level of bad luck. What NBA team — or really any pro sports team — has three players they picked in the first round, not play a minute of his or her rookie season? I can’t think of one either. Between 2013 and ’16, the Sixers took Nerlens Noel (via trade in ’13), Joel Embiid (‘14) and Ben Simmons (No. 1 overall pick in ’16). With Simmons now out for the season, the Sixers earned that most dubious distinction. This year the Sixers struggled early on rolling to a 4-18 record. There were more than just a few whispers the Sixers were tanking again. Then the team woke up and went on a 10-3 run at the beginning of ’17, elevating expectations along with the birth of Embiid Nation. Not so fast Sixers fans, put the cat down. Now Embiid’s knee injury has ended his season, and any slight chance for a playoff run. It got worse when the team traded popular players Ersan Ilyasova and Noel. But one thing Sixers fans can look to for a ray of hope is the emergence of rookie forward Dario Saric, selected with the No. 12 overall pick (swapped with Orlando, which took Elfrid Payton) in the ’14 NBA Draft. Because he had signed a 2+1 contract with the Turkish team Anadolu Efes, the Sixers had to wait until this season to catch a glimpse of their young star. It appears to have been worth the wait. The 6-foot-10, 223-pound Croatian is blossoming into one of the most promising players in the league. Playing limited minutes because of the log jam of players at his position, Saric was averaging just over 24 minutes a game. He still averaged 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. Now with all the trades and injuries, over the 10 games preceding March 1, Saric is up to 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. “I try to find myself with my new role, Saric, who is still finding his way with his English, said “I try to play, try to run, try

to catch the rhythm of the game which is the most important thing in basketball. But I am not shooting good enough from the three-point line right now, I need to get better at that. Maybe it is my legs, they are not the same as they were at the beginning of the season. I played 35 games last year. It is not my ability, I should be doing better. I hope to in the next game. Saric has a humility about him. Growing up in Croatia, he has lived in a part of the world that is anything but stable. For the 22-year-old, it is all about his team. “We give 100 percent always, Saric said after scoring 20 points and pulling down 11 rebound in a 120-112 win over the Washington Wizards. “We try to win. If somebody messed up on defense, if somebody is late (on an assignment), you always know your teammate has your back. We also share the ball. We attack from the wing, from the inside, from the pick and roll, we attack from the fast break, we have so many options. SARIC TALKED ABOUT a teammate, another big, Richaun Holmes, and his new role as the team’s main rim protector now that

Noel is gone. “I think he has jumped into Nerlens’ (Noel) situation, his role,â€? Saric said. “He is really playing both ways. Everybody knows he is around the rim, finishing around the rim. He has stepped up in Nerlens’ place. ‌ He can play defense and on offense can set good screens and shoot long shots as well.â€? Holmes said he relishes the role Saric described. “Shot blocking is something I’ve been doing for a while,â€? Holmes said. “I just go out there and protect the rim.â€? His teammates, including Robert Covington, have watched Saric since he fled the violence going on in Turkey to join the Sixers a year sooner than expected. Covington talked about Saric’s expanding role. “Dario has done a lot throughout the year,â€? Covington said. “You see glimpses of it throughout the year. Dario is a very special player. He’s able to do so much on the court. ... You saw every aspect of his game. You’ll see him guard, defending, rebound and make the plays on the offensive end. That’s what Dario does. Now that he’s going to play more, he’s in the starting lineup, that’s really going to help him take his game to another level. It’s just a matter of him embracing (his new role) and keep working.â€? Sixers head coach Brett Brown said Saric was known in basketball circles for many years as a prospect and is glad the Sixers took a chance with him. “You’ve all heard me talk about him under the roof that he was raised to play basketball,â€? Brown said after the win against the Wizards. “If you really knew his pedigree in Croatia and his family tree, and the notoriety and profile he has had since he was 12, then 14, then he enters this country. He’s a professional basketball player and he’s been that for a while.â€? Saric says he likes his team, and believes the future is bright. “I believe in these guys,â€? Saric said. “They can play really good basketball.â€? *

he Eagles have their quarterback in Carson Wentz. He is, based on what we’ve seen from a full season of play, a nodoubt-about-it franchise player around whom the Eagles plan to build. Having that kind of confidence in a quarterback is a big part of the NFL’s winning picture. Another huge part is the head coach, and in Doug Pederson, the Eagles have a man who started his 2016 blazing at 3-0 and then ultimately adjusted to 7-9 at season’s end. What do we know about Pederson? What is the next step he must take for the Eagles? It’s impossible to predict as the Eagles open free agency and the first real step in their quest to improve all corners of their roster. But this much is true: The second season for an Eagles

Even after a playoff loss, the future was bright. Kelly’s Eagles started 9-3 in ’14, but he lost three straight games in December and missed out on the postseason. It was downhill for the single season remaining in Kelly’s tenure. The moral of the story? Whatever you think of Pederson, and he gained points for hanging in through a lot of adversity in his rookie season, we’re going to find out quite a bit more in’17. In fact, it’s fair to say that the second season of an Eagles head coach says more about his legacy than any other. Reid’s Eagles evolved, leading to his longterm success. Kelly’s philosophies did not, and he’s out of the NFL. For Pederson, the challenge is right there in front of him with a franchise quarterback and a very difficult NFC East ladder to climb. A>@
