Last Chance Inn

n baseball when your team trails in the bottom of the ninth inning, an old-time announcer used to refer to it as “Last Chance Inn” time. Score enough runs to survive or lose. There’s reason to believe that our public schools have entered the Last Chance Inn. Philadelphia public schools are facing a crisis. You’ve heard that so many times it doesn’t register anymore. It’s kind of like when the little boy who cried wolf. Why pay attention this time around? But there’s reason to believe that this time, the wolf really IS at the schoolhouse door. The real question in Philadelphia is: Does anyone really care? Last July, Mayor Kenney took back the fate of the schools from Harrisburg. Think what you want about Kenney, you can’t doubt his passion for the city’s public schools. Kenney didn’t attend public school, but sometime, somehow, saving the city’s school system has become his magnificent obsession. Now that’s as close to a thankless task as you can get politically in this state or this city. The political constituency for the city’s public schools may not be small enough to fit on the head of a pin, but it’s close. Despite the boundless enthusiasm of advocates such as Councilwoman Helen Gym (and former teacher and contributor to this newspaper, Gloria Endres), dealing with the needs of the public schools has seemingly exhausted the patience of politicians and voters. Forget about whether that’s fair to the 135,000 students who attend our public schools, it’s the political reality in Philadelphia. It’s the reality the mayor faces in his latest efforts to fund the schools mainly through a property tax hike. When you advocate for tax hikes and cuts that will require sacrifice from the city’s residents, your argument for their needs must be credible. The salvation of the public school system has become a hard sell even for those of us who want them to be saved. Tax increases are never popular. The failure of the soda tax to raise the projected goal of $92 million doesn’t help. I would argue, as does the mayor, that even though the projected revenue from the that tax fell 15 percent short of its goal, it did raise $78 million for the city’s pre-K program. By 2028, the soda tax will have funded pre-K for an additional 5,500 students. You can focus on the shortfall of 1,000 students, as one local columnist did, but without the soda tax, NONE of the students would be able to attend pre-K. When the soda tax was proposed, its critics correctly predicted the shortfall. But many of them also suggested the better alternative would’ve been to raise property taxes. Now that the mayor is proposing to supplement school revenue by doing just that, many of these same critics have reversed themselves. The biggest obstacle to the credibility of public school advocates is that the school administration has badly mismanaged its budget. There’s a per-

ception that the school system is top-heavy with high salaried administrators. The Ackerman factor is still with us. The deceased former superintendent of schools, Arlene Ackerman, was tone-deaf when it came to public relations. She collected a fat buyout when she left. The public perception of wasteful spending is still impacted by Ackerman’s controversial tenure. I had a recent conversation with an employee of the public school system - someone whom you’d expect would be sympathetic to the plight of public schools. She told me that she and her friends who send kids to the public schools have already been hurt by the hike in the price of soda. They don’t want an increase in their property taxes, she continued. We don’t need more administrators with academic degrees, collecting big salaries, she said, or words to that effect. If she represents the base of support for public schools, the political case for supporting the city’s public schools is in trouble. The fact that the majority of our public school students are non-white is likely a factor in the small base of support for the city’s public schools. But minorities themselves, in increasing numbers, are fleeing the public schools for charter schools. Public school advocates correctly point out that the funding for charter schools has largely come at the expense of the public school system. It’s true that during the past year, Harrisburg has improved the formula for distributing funds, but that redistribution applies to NEW state funds only. The public school constituency can’t count on support from parochial school parents. They have their own problems coping with fewer schools and increasing tuitions. There is also a school of thought represented by Ernest Owens, a writer for Philly Mag, who recently detailed five ways to raise the money for schools WITHOUT raising taxes. Owens advocates cutting the city payroll, eliminating the DROP program, reducing the 10-year tax abatement, improving the collection of back taxes, and going after scofflaws. The mayor should be applauded for taking accountability for our public schools. He says we can’t depend on D.C. or Harrisburg to ride to our rescue. Kenney has convinced me. But there are too many others not convinced. The mayor should take his case directly to the people via town hall meetings and a televised prime-time press conference. The mayor cares. But he must convince you. Otherwise public school students will be checking into Heartbreak Hotel.

eing that we are stuck in what seems to be a never-ending nor’easter season in which trees and wires may not survive one of those massive wind gusts, this picture caught our attention. We are not sure what the weather was on this day, believed to be in May 1933, but it seems the wind played a factor in this tree’s unfortunate fall into the swimming pool at 10th and Mifflin streets. It was so powerful that it crashed through a brick wall, too. The scene of the damage was the now defunct St. Mary’s Cemetery.

t’s that time of year in which high school seniors are finalizing college decisions. Younger students are likely proud of the strides they have made in the classroom from September to now. Others may have faced personal hardships that presented unexpected challenges in and out of the classroom. No matter what the story is, each of these students is very deserving of recognition. Teachers, counselors and administrators, do you have a Rising Star in your classroom? If yes, it’s time to share the stories of these first graders through high school seniors you feel are worthy of Rising Star consideration. The South Philly Review and Grays Ferry-based Young Chances Foundation are once again teaming up to recognize your standout candidates. The only requirement is the student must reside in South Philly or attend a South Philly school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 Zip Codes. Parents and guardians, we know you believe your child is well deserving of being included on this list, but nominations need to come from the school. Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are

What is the reason(s) for nominating this student? What academic achievements has this student achieved during the 2017-18 school year? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? These are just a few questions meant to help get the conversation started. ews Flash: Spring is almost here. Six days for those who are counting. The closed sign at the neighborhood water ice stands will soon switch to open. Call it the spring chill, any of us will take over a nor’easter. This week’s issue serves as your advance planner for the season, featuring an expanded events calendar of concerts, theater and special events taking place around the area. Of course the Phillies will be returning from Clearwater, and fans will soon hear the home plate umpire shout “Play Ball!” at Citizens Bank Park. The home opener is Thursday, April 5, at 3:05 p.m. against the Miami Marlins. We will save the talk of the Phillies chances of making the playoffs for another issue later this month. But the events guide is just one part of this exciting, jam-packed issue. This week’s issue also includes the results from the Readers’ Choice poll that appeared in the paper and online over the last couple months. Each of the local businesses were excited to hear the news, and were appreciative that you, the loyal readers of The South Philly Review, helped them get to No. 1. Many are repeat winners while others are first-timers to the Readers’ Choice winners list. It doesn’t matter what the business is, these places would not make the cut without the support of local residents. Some of the categories were extremely tight in which one or two votes made the difference. It was like watching a sudden death shootout between the Flyers and Penguins. Others blew away the competition in their field. So many other places received votes, but did not crack the top three in their respective category. The important thing is the South Philadelphia community is made of so many successful businesses that it’s impossible to feature them all in one issue. Think of it like the Oscars in which 10 outstanding films compete for one prestigious crown – Best Picture. The Readers’ Choice issue is just a way of getting the community involved and giving their favorites from the south side of Philly a well-deserved pat on the back. Some are new, like Best New Restaurant, while others are long-standing places that some may consider South Philly institutions. Each of them has a winning story to share. he readers have spoken, now it’s time to honor some of the businesses and people that make South Philly stand out.

Manager Joe DiOrio said he was “happy” and “grateful” toward the Review’s readers for voting Stogie Joe’s, bar menu as being the best in South Philly. “I think the whole idea is that it’s really fresh, homemade, quality food and drinks that are affordable for people,” said DiOrio. “From a lawyer to a little kids Tball team, anybody can feel comfortable sitting at the bar. You’ll make a friend.” DiOrio said what really makes Stogie Joe’s bar menu the best is the pizza and the antipasto salad with meats and cheeses. “What really makes it is the housemade red wine herb vinaigrette,” he said. For the 10 years it has existed, Stogie Joe’s, 1801 E. Passyunk Ave., has proven to be one of the best bars in the neighborhood for grabbing a cold post-work brew or to watch the game. The bar was mentioned in a 2014 Huffington Post article that listed Philadelphia as one of the seven best cities for pizza in the United States. “Some of the best include Stogie Joe’s, which serves square pizza with the cheese buried beneath a tangy sauce,” the article read. What is it that sets Stogie Joe’s apart from the rest? It’s “the feel,” DiOrio explained. “It’s almost like a ‘Cheers’ type of atmosphere,” he said. “You come in here and you most likely wind up knowing somebody or making a friend.” Rounding out the list of best bar menus in South Philly was Bar One, 767 S. 9th St., and Toll Man Joe’s, 26 E. Oregon Ave., which finished an appetizing second and third, respectively. ISGRO PASTRIES

One-hundred-fourteen years. Looking over this year’s list of Readers’ Choice winners in the food category, the number alone makes Isgro Pastries, 1009 Christian St., stand out as the granddaddy of the South Philly-based businesses on this list. The title is fitting, being that the late Mario Isgro, grandfather to current owner, Gus Isgro, and great grandfather to AJ and Michael Isgro, who run the day-to-day operations, opened the store in 1904. Of course, there is also the number one, as in the Readers’ Choice winner for bakery. “It’s a great honor being that we are in South Philly,” AJ Isgro said. “It shows us we are on the right track because we wouldn’t be here without our customers.” The funny thing is, there was a time when AJ had no intention of answering questions about the family business. He got a master’s degree in biology, and had every intention of going to medical school, at least that was the career plan. “Working here for my family was right under my nose the whole time, apparently,” he said. Isgro has established such a following that it should come as no surprise that three generations of families are coming through the front door. Some visit every morning for a fresh-baked danish, while others come for a cannoli, rum cake, limoncello cookie, fresh fruit tart or other pastry of choice. We can’t forget about the cherry pie that earned the brothers some TV time on “Good Day Philadelphia” last month for National Cherry Pie Day. The busiest time of year tends to be Christmas time, especially the two days before when AJ said there is typically a three-hour wait with a line that wraps around the corner. Cookie tins tend to be a popular item during the holidays. This four-generation bakery continues to adjust with the times, too, making use of online ordering services like caviar and Uber Eats to help meet customer demands of those who don’t want to make the trip into the Bella Vista neighborhood. The baking starts before 4 a.m., and continues throughout the day. With more than a century of baking experience, the Isgro family has mastered the art of producing delicious results. Termini Bros., 1523 S. 8th St., baked a piece of the second-place pie, and Varallo Brothers Bakery, 1639 S. 10th St., got a taste of third.

Appetite for success

Stogie Joe’s Tavern may have only been around since 2008, but it has the feel of a long-time neighborhood bar. In fact, it was one of the progenitors of East Passyunk’s revitalization, partly responsible for making the neighborhood the desirable place to live it is.

“That’s awesome,” Primo Hoagies’ South Philly store manager Bill Jess said when he learned his store earned the best Italian hoagie honor in the Review’s Readers Choice Awards. “We’ve been waiting to hear back from you guys because every year this is the most important award we can win. It’s our customers, and our actual neighborhood means more than any other award we could possibly win. It’s the only one that matters.” Primo, like a lot of hoagie spots, uses Thumann’s meats and cheeses. But what really sets it apart is the bread, which, unlike a lot of hoagie spots, the company bakes itself. One other thing that makes it unique: you’re not going to break the bank for a sandwich. “We’re the lowest price around here,” said Jess. Rich and Colleen Neigre, who opened the store at 1528 W. Ritner St. more than 25 years ago, still own the place. “They all started making sandwiches, and his main thing was he used the best bread and meat he could possibly get,” Jess said. “He started selling to his buddies and then decided to open a store.” Jess said that every now and then Primo’s will mix up the formula, “but sticking to the actual original basics is what keeps us No. 1 year after year.” In addition to the quality of the hoagies and their ingredients, the other thing that really sets Primo’s apart, Jess feels, is the customer service you’ll find at the store. “We have a great relationship with the local neighborhood,” he said. “We appreciate every new customer. It takes years to gain one, and it takes a second to lose one. Every new customer is treated like one who’s been coming for ages. There’s no difference.” Ricci’s Hoagies, 1165 S. 11th St., and Pastaficio, 1528 Packer Ave., sandwiched their way into the second and third place spots, respectively.

and we appreciate their input - we’re here for them, after all.” Chick’s, 1807 Washington Ave., raised a glass to second place, while Mattei Family Pizza, 1260 Point Breeze Ave., took a slice of praise in third.

Taste of something new

There is no doubt the South Philly restaurant scene is hot, so hot that new places are opening on a regular basis. The new restaurant category ended up being one of the tighter Readers’ Choice races, but in the end, Barcelona Wine Bar, 1709 E. Passyunk Ave., claimed the prize. The tasty Spanish tapas, and of course wine, registered high marks with customers. “It’s an honor to be acknowledged for this award. It’s truly a testament to our team, their hard work, and our commitment to this community,” general manager John Scott said. Barcelona took over the space previously occupied by A Man’s Image, which Abe Mandel owned for 60 years. The restaurant concept existed in other parts of the country. Including the New England area and Washington, D.C., before moving into the East Passyunk Crossing neighborhood. The newcomer on the avenue participated in

BARCELONA WINE BAR the recently wrapped up East Passyunk Restaurant Week. Scott and his team are excited about being part of the vibrant avenue scene. Customers come in throughout the day to enjoy tapas items or a glass of wine at the bar. Some are people they have gotten to know from neighboring businesses. “We have developed relationships with the local businesses that we really value, such as the hair salons, the cleaners, and the other shops the people working right around us have become some of our regulars and often recommend us to their customers,” Scott said. Pulpo, hanger steak, patatas bravas along with the jamón and manchego croquettes are some of the most popular items. With spring almost here, chef Will Shaw and his team plan on adding ramps

and some soft shell crab, but the exact date has yet to be confirmed. “One of the things I love most about what we do is how we’re always changing the menu based on what’s fresh and exciting while staying true to our concept - and our classic Spanish dishes are, of course, a constant on the menu.” Scott said. Shaw is one of the newer additions to the Barcelona team, replacing executive chef Paras Shah, who ran the kitchen when the restaurant opened last year. “Chef Will has a great approach to managing the kitchen and creating new dishes. He’s also willing to listen and take into account guest feedback, which has been very impactful,” Scott said. “Our guests like to get involved in South Philly,

For the second year in a row, City Pizza has been crowned winner of the Review’s Readers’ Choice Award for pizza. “I’m very happy with it,” the store’s manager Bruce Nagel said. “Customers seem to like it.” And there’s a lot to like. Nagle said some of the most popular items on the menu include the shop’s pulled pork pizza and the pizzazz. And of course there’s always good old plain and pepperoni. Even better, there are locations at Front Street and Snyder Avenue and 16th Street and Oregon Avenue. For those looking for a slight twist on the typical plain pie, there’s the “old style” pie, which features crushed tomato gravy, sliced mozzarella, and fresh garlic and parsley in a thin-crust square pizza. If you order it on a Thursday, it’s $1 off. Other selections from the menu include the buffalo chicken pizza, the meat lover’s pizza and the smothered fry pizza, which is a fresh, hand-tossed pizza smothered with french fries, three cheeses, bacon and ranch dressing. The business has had the same owner, Bob Petril, it’s had since it opened in 1993. That’s why, according to Nagel, the food is just as good now as it was then. “It’s the best way to have a business – don’t change the people and the food doesn’t change,” he said. “Same recipes and you don’t change anything. Successful sandwiches

Deep in the heart of South Philly, along the 1500 block of Packer Avenue, Pastaficio fixes hoagies, hot sandwiches, salads and inside outs daily. According to SPR readers, they make the best specialty sandwich in South Philly. “It’s an honor to get the award from people from South Philly,” said Anthony Messina, co-owner of Pastaficio, 1528 Packer Ave., along with Frank Sangiuliano. “We have a big South Philly clientele.” Messina and Sangiuliano never really intended on becoming the kings of the South Philly specialty sandwiches they’ve become. In fact, when they first started, all they wanted to do was make homemade pasta. “We were just going to do homemade pasta and prepared foods,” Messina said, “but people started asking us for sandwiches and the sandwich business kept growing from there on in.” Pastaficio still makes homemade pasta and also added chicken cutlets to the menu, which Messina said are “really popular.” In fact, in honor of the Eagles’ recent Super Bowl win, they’ve added a new item to the menu called the “Philly Special.” It features chicken cutlets doused in BBQ sauce, topped with American cheese. Like many other business owners, Messina stresses that consistency is the biggest reason why customers keep coming back. “If you put out the same product every day they know it’s going to be the same sandwich,” Messina said. “We use quality ingredients.” Also, Abruzzi bread and Thumann’s meats don’t hurt either. SPR readers voted John’s Roast Pork, 14. E. Snyder Ave., into second place while Cosmi’s Deli, 1501 S. 8th St., finished third.

Hot news Concetta Varallo and her husband John are no strangers to success. For the past 15 years, their restaurant, Ristorante Pesto, 1915 S. Broad St., has been a South Philly staple for high quality, fine Italian food. Before that, they owned a restaurant called Io E Tu at 9th and Dickinson, which was also a neighborhood favorite. “We owe it all to the customers,” said Concetta. “A lot of family members and friends have been with us for throughout the 15 years.” Ristorante Pesto, the Readers’ Choice winner for South Philly Restaurant. is arguably South Philly’s closest thing you’ll find to the kind of authentic Italian food you’d find in Italy. That’s because John Varallo was trained in the culinary arts in Naples, Italy. One of the couple’s daughters, Maria, is also a chef at the restaurant. They have two other daughters as well: Gianna, who works as a bartender at Pesto and Christina, one of the restaurant’s bussers. The restaurant is located right in the heart of South Philly.

“We loved the area. It was close to all the sporting the events and theater of the arts,” Concetta said. At Pesto, customers will experience THE BUSINESS a lot of things that make their dining experience unique. For instance, all the food – including the pasta – is homemade, customers get free appetizers and the serving sizes are generous. “We always give out containers because nobody seems to finish everything,” said Concetta. The restaurant has plenty of options to choose from as well. Perhaps too many, which is never a bad problem to have. “We have a five-page menu and 20 specials,” boasted Concetta. One of the most sought after dishes at Pesto is the cavatelli pasta, which features lobster, shrimp and crab meat in a rose sauce. Rachael Ray bestowed the title of “best pasta dish” upon it during an episode of her TV show. Because the restaurant is No. 1 (out of 3,629) on TripAdvisor’s best restaurants in Philadelphia, the Varallos have welcomed in people from all over the world, including Romania, Australia and Kenya. Rounding out the top three in the list of South Philly’s best restaurants is Villa Di Roma, 936 S. 9th St., which came in second, and Scannicchio’s, 2500 S. Broad St., which came in third.

The local band scene has nothing to do with selling out the Wells Fargo Center or Theater of the Living Arts. Would it be exciting? Of course. But in this case, we are talking about the groups performing at community events, weddings, nightclubs and other smaller venues. The Business, a group 11 musicians strong, continues to hit a winning tune with readers of the South Philly Review. “We love it. We are proud to be from South Philly. We are proud to win the award,” vocalist and band leader Danny Vanore said. “However many times we can win it, we want to win it.” Vanore is one of the four remaining members from the original seven. Tom Nataloni, lead vocals, Andrew Carrozza, saxophone and Manny Capizzi, bass, are the others. The cover band performs everything from Elvis to Justin Timberlake, and has been doing so for a long time – 30 years, to be exact. “When I started this band, Tommy and Andrew were 16,” Vanore said. “We have a tight friendship, even when we disagree on something.” Over the years, Lea Davis, lead vocals, Antonia Brunetti, lead vocals, Greg D’Agostino, guitar, Steve Tabilio, drums, Sean Finn, keyboards, Barry McCommon, trombone, and Jimmy Boyle, trumpet, have come aboard. You don’t necessarily want to go, but like the human body, car engines, brakes and tires require a little TLC. Frank Saur and his team at 11th Street Auto, 820–22 S. 11th St., seem to have customer service down pat as they are back in the top spot in this Readers’ Choice category. “I am extremely excited,” Saur said. “I want to thank the customers for taking the time to vote for us. It means a lot.” The business, which was started by Saur’s father, William, has been around for more than four decades, handling everything from oil changes to brakes repairs to the other maintenance that may come up. Sometimes appointments are scheduled, other times customers come in to deal with one of those “oh no” situations. “We make sure everything is being done the way it’s supposed to be done,” Saur said. The 11th Street Auto repair team includes four mechanics, who Saur said do exceptional work. Taking a car in for service, at times, can be extremely stressful, so when customers drop off a car, he does his best to comfort them like a doctor would when a patient is not feeling well. “I tell them we are going to figure this out for you, and get you back on the road safely,” Saur said. “We understand the stress that they are under.” Others times, customers dread the phone call. You know the one in which your car needs … and

it will cost … When it comes time to make the call, Saur, who has been part of the business since 1976, shares all the information with the customer, including any work that many need to be done. “I tell them, this is what we are going to do and why we are going to do it,” Saue said, “I never push them to make a decision. I always tell them to take all the time they need to think about it.” Sometimes the car is simply not worth fixing. But if it, Saur and his team will be there ready to handle the repairs. Readers invested in PFCU

It was more than 65 years ago when Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, which won the Readers’ Choice Award for best bank, first opened its doors in 1952. It initially opened as a credit union for Philadelphia’s municipal employees, but since then so much has changed. “We’ve grown exponentially now that our charter allows us,” said the credit union’s spokeswoman Karen Eavis. Nowadays anybody can open an account at PFCU as long as you live, work or study in Philadelphia. Or even if you have a family member who does. PFCU has more than 11 branches, but the South Philly branch - located at 929 Snyder Ave. - has been there almost 10 years. Eavis says Philadelphians prefer PFCU over many banks because, unlike credit unions, which are nonprofits, banks are profit-driven. “Credit unions work for our members,” she said. “We return our products back to our members on higher dividends on their savings. Many people find, according to Eavis, that people find PFCU to be an attractive credit union for low interest rate auto loans and because there are no high fees. “We’re honored to receive the award,” said Eavis. “it’s nice knowing that it came from the readers. We serve the people in the community.” In addition to winning the award, the credit union is proud of its commitment to the community. Feeding expectations

“It’s all about the food.” Ask Carmen D’Aquilante, owner of Swan Caterers/Waterfall Room, 2015 S. Water St., about what it takes to run a successful catering hall, and that will likely be his immediate response. The food is leaving a lasting impression in the form of a Readers’ Choice Award. “I am ecstatic because the people chose me,” he said. Of course he mentioned “the food.” D’Aquilante does not want one of his customers asking a significant other to go grab a pizza after a five-hour function. “A lot of guys don’t concentrate on food. They put the makeup on to make it look good,” D’Aquilante said. “You have to be consistent in this business.” He added quality, quantity and decor as the other important factors. Being a catering hall, the Swan Caterers team is ready to do whatever it takes to meet his customer’s needs. It includes preparing ethnic Chilean dishes for a Chilean customer who was getting married there. When asked about the food at a tasting, D’Aquilante was told “This is better than the food I get back home.” The Waterfall Room, complete with a dance floor, has a capacity for 225 guests, and can be set up for weddings, reunions, anniversary parties, corporate events, as well as just about any other occasion people are looking to host. There is additional tent space complete with hardwood floors and chandeliers, and is available March through December. The Swan Caterers success story is one that has been going strong for 52 years, and was started by Carmen’s late father, Frank D’Aquilante, who opened the original Swan Caterers at 1500 W. Shunk St., and the space remains available for functions today. Carmen started in the business at age 12. “My dad would tell me ‘you are as good as your

D’Aquilante’s other daughter, Joy, fills in when needed. D’Aquilante also noted his 94-yearold mother, Flo, still gets her two cents in about the business. Galdo’s, 1933 W. Still got the groove When some people hear the word “dance,” they immediately respond “no, thank you” or just walk away in fear of making a fool of themselves. But whether they are parents or students or the grandmother who comes in from Ocean City, N.J., Douglas is leaving a lasting impression in the form of the Readers’ Choice Award for dance studio. “I am very grateful,” Douglas said of the award. “We are constantly trying to change with the times.” It includes adding a Ninja Warrior obstacle course inside the gym following the popularity of the hit NBC reality show “American Ninja Warrior.” The class stresses upper body and core strength, including jumping the right way, climbing tires and going through them. While Douglas enjoys the training part, he has no intention of trying out for the show. “No, I am cool with that,” he said with a laugh. “That’s got to be your whole life. You’ve got to eat, sleep and drink that.” DanceAdelphia is his life. It’s a business mother and grandmother started more than 60 years ago, and he is just building upon what they started. Besides teaching classes, Douglas takes a personal interest by preparing children for life. “I stress body language. What you say with your body is how you come off to people,” he said. “Kids get things so instantly that if they don’t get it right away they get frustrated. If you peruse the winners of this year’s Readers’ Choice Awards, you’ll find South Philadelphians tend to prefer the small, local, mom-andpop businesses around the neighborhood. It can be difficult for large corporations to earn the respect of blue collar Philadelphians, but that’s exactly what Planet Fitness, a company started in Canada and headquartered in Hampton, N.H., did. “With all the competition here it’s a great honor,� said the South Philly branch’s manager Brian Turner. “It’s a great accomplishment.� The gym located at 2350 W. Oregon Ave. is open 24/7 with only a few exceptions on major holidays. Besides its around-the-clock accessibility, it only costs $10 a month to join, and it’s geared particularly for those who need an extra kick in the butt to get to the gym. “We’re a very user-friendly gym,� Turner said. “We have free fitness instructors who teach members how to use the equipment and get them started. It’s a huge aspect.� Not to mention, on the first Monday of every month, members are treated to free pizza and bagels. For just an extra $12 a month, members can get the black card membership, which’ll get you access to massage chairs, tanning beds, 20 percent off Reebok products, half price cooler drinks and more. “It’s a low-cost gym, Turner said. “We try to make customers feel welcome when they come in, and the staff is very friendly.� The gym is a relative newcomer on the Philly scene; its grand opening was on Dec. 31, 2008. The winning look Diane Bosco continues to a very successful career of making people look and feel good about themselves. Thirty-one years, to be exact. The clients ranging from infant to age 94 are leaving Hot Waves, 1200 W. Ritner St., feeling good as the location has earned Readers’ Choice recognition as the top hair salon. “It’s exhilarating because we work very hard to sustain our position in the city to stay current and be a fashion-forward salon,� Bosco, Hot Waves founder and artistic director, said. “Frankly, I couldn’t do it without my staff. I have an amazing team.� The Hot Waves team consists of nine hair designers and two others working the front desk. The hair salon business is a highly competitive one, as South Philly residents could easily travel

to Center City or South Jersey to have their hair done. Bosco uses the slogan “an uptown salon with a downtown address� to keep the customers coming. Bosco operated four locations at one time, including one at Second and Christian streets that was open for 19 years. It closed in 2009. The others were in Packer Park and on the beach in Florida - it was literally on the beach. Bosco decided consolidating operations back to the original location was the best for business. Bosco also enjoys sharing her experience and expertise with the hair designers who are fresh out of school. She holds a weekly class that touches on everything from how to hold a comb to being a successful businesswoman. As long as they have the “passion, desire and ability to do the work,� Bosco is ready to share her educational tips. “It takes time to get to the end goal,� she said, Outside of the salon, her team will be partici-

In this case, we’re referring to Armando Rey Jewelers, 816 S. 9th St., the 38-year-old business where customers can come and purchase a ring before popping that all-important question. Rey was happy to hear about his loyal customers voting him as their preferred jeweler in the Readers’ Choice Awards for the second year in a row. “We are very honored to be selected for the second year in a row,� owner Armando Rey said. “It just means the world to us. We just love our customers.� Besides doing repairs on the premises, Rey handles custom designs and latest styles. In terms of those engagement rings, Rey said he notices a difference with the way things are done today. Years, ago, he said, the guys would come in, pick something out and just surprise his soon-to-be significant other. Over the last decade, he noted, more and more women are coming into the store to pick out options, so it becomes a semi-surprise. “We try to help them pick out the perfect ring,� Rey said. “We want it to be something so special that they treasure it for a lifetime.� He recalled one customer who purchased a ring Continued on page 28>>

Family members were inside the store waiting. The rings are just one aspect of the business, which is busiest around Christmas time, while Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day are a couple of the other jewelry-shopping occasions. In terms of customers, Rey, and his wife, Alice, have reached the point where there are three generations of family members coming into the store. Fittingly, their daughters, Lauren and Deanna, come in and help out mom and dad when they can. Olivieri Jewelers, 2523 S. When it comes to clothing, Deborah Scipione knows a thing or two. A career in the fashion industry has a little something to do with it. In 1992, Chique Bebe specialized in children’s clothing. She kept it opened until 2004, at which put she switched gears and opened Bianca Simone, 1740 E. Passyuunk Ave. Fourteen years later, cus-

tomers are still loving the fashions as it claimed the Readers’ Choice prize for specialty shop. The store name’s is a tribute to her late mother, Bianca Simone, whom she lost to cancer more than 16 years ago. “My mother’s style and character gave me the inspiration for Bianca Simone,” Scipione said. “She was a beautiful person inside and out. I couldn’t think of a better name. “I knew with her on my side, I couldn’t lose.” When it comes to ladies clothing, the store has just about every age and occasion covered. Besides clothing options for infants, teenagers and women, it’s the go-to place for Holy Communion, prom, mother of the bride and mother of the groom dresses. With Easter fast approaching, Bianca Simone is ready to help customers look their Easter Sunday best. When a customer steps into Bianca Simone, it’s all about sending them home looking and feeling good. Scipione uses her experience in the business to meet the needs of her shoppers. “They will never be disappointed in the service I provide and the quality of my product,” she said. “I would like to thank them.” Molly’s Books and Records, 1010 S. 9th St., put second place in the books while Di Bruno Bros., 930 S. 9th St., was presented a third-place special.

Super-market moment No matter where you reside, supermarkets are a necessity. Sure, going out to eat is fun, but having a fully stocked pantry, refrigerator and freezer opens the door to so many more options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. Residents have their preferred go-to spot,

but the overall feeling among readers is that ACME is their grocery shopping destination of choice. There is clearly a demand in South Philly with locations at 10th and Reed, 19th and Johnston and Snyder and Swanson. The latter of the trio is the newest, having opened last September. “ACME is honored to be chosen as the South Philly Review Readers’ Choice winner for favorite supermarket, and is thrilled to continue to bring the very best of ACME to South Philadelphia for many years to come,” said Dana Ward, senior communications coordinator for ACME markets, said. Today, it’s a “one-stop shopping experience” for customers that includes grab-and-go deli items, fresh cut fruits and vegetables, beer and wine, as well as special desserts from the bakery. Shoppers get rewarded, too, via MyMixx digital coupons, MONOPOLY and Sunoco gas rewards. While each location carries the same products, customers tend to frequent one location. The Passyunk Square-based store was the preferred spot among Readers’ Choice voters. No matter which store shoppers choose, the team is ready to meet customer demand. “Our store directors are community focused and are continuously working with their neighbors to provide services and product offerings to the unique taste of each community,” Ward said. ShopRite of Whitman Plaza, 330 W. Oregon Ave., bagged a second-place finish, while ShopRite of Oregon Avenue, 23rd Street and Oregon Avenue, checked out in third.

Mystery, intrigue of another NFL off-season is underway

W

hat made the 2017 Eagles’ Super Bowl season so special is that the locker room functioned as never before. A team-first, no-egos approach worked wonders for the team on the march to winning Super Bowl LII. Head coach Doug Pederson worked hard to create that culture, and the effort paid off with a championship season. Well, that team is no longer these Eagles. As free agency opened in the NFL, the Eagles were aggressively making moves and challenging the roster. Faced with tough decisions in the NFL’s salary-cap world, the Eagles made some moves met with concern. Salaries were jettisoned. Trades were made.

The old gang ain’t coming back together for 2018. The debate in the next many weeks as the Eagles continue to upgrade the roster – they certainly believe they are doing just that – is going to be whether, for example, the Eagles have made themselves better along the defensive line with Michael Bennett. And just how much will the Eagles miss wide receiver Torrey Smith’s speed and

big-play ability in the offense? But the real question is what happens with the Eagles’ in-house chemistry? How can they possibly duplicate that remarkable esprit de corps from last season? That the Eagles lost so many players with season-ending injuries and had ready replacements in place to keep the team winning all the way through the Super Bowl was, certainly, a credit to the coaching staff for developing the players and making sure they were put in positions to play well, and it’s also very much a kudos to the players themselves for filling so many holes created by the injuries. brotherhood that put the team first in every regard, and we saw how that commitment made a difference on the field. The Eagles never flinched in the face of adversity. They never let a world of doubters seep into their team structure. That team structure is going to be different in 2018. It’s too early to say whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing. It’s just a different thing now. No question it’s tough for fans to see some of the favored players leave town, players who were here long enough to make an imprint in the region’s fiber. Unfortunately, that’s business in the Not For Long. The Eagles won a Super Bowl on Feb. 4. Less than six weeks later, the shine from the Super Bowl has

faded into reality: It’s on to next year for everyone. This is football version of the chicken-vs-egg theory. How much of winning is talent? How much is chemistry in the locker room? The Eagles want to replicate what they did in 2017 in every way and that includes locker-room culture. With 53 players and 53 different personalities, an NFL locker room is unlike any other. It is a bubbling cauldron of emotions every day. What the Eagles have done, out of necessity mostly, is change the dynamic. As much as on-field ability is a factor, so is the fit in the locker room. Let’s see how that develops as the roster changes in the next couple of months.

hen the NCAA Tournament brackets were announced on Sunday, Ss. Neumann-Goretti boys’ basketball fans were paying very close attention, and for good reason, they were waiting to hear where and when the University of Miami, University of Kentucky and Villanova University would be playing later this week. Miami senior guard Ja’Quan Newton and his teammates learned that they received an at-large bid and the No. 6 seed in the South Region. The Hurricanes will open the tournament tomorrow in Dallas against No. 11 LoyolaChicago. The game is scheduled to start at 3:10 p.m. (truTV). His team is coming off a quarterfinal loss to the University of the North Carolina in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Newton is averaging 7.1 points, 2.5 assists and 2.4 rebounds per game. Should Miami advance, they would meet either No. 3 Tennessee or No. 14 Wright State in Saturday’s second-round action. Freshman guard Quade Green and

Former teammate Dhamir CosbyRoundtree, a freshman forward, is coming off a championship weekend of his own as his Villanova Wildcats defeated Providence, 76-66 in overtime, on Saturday to claim the Big East Conference championship at Madison Square Garden. The freshman forward, who only played three minutes of the game, has averaged 11.6 minutes in 34 games. His Wildcats are the No. 1 seed in the East Region and will play the winner of the First Four contest between No. 16 LIU Brooklyn and Radford. Tip time is 6:50 p.m. tomorrow (TNT) in Pittsburgh. Barring a major upset, Villanova will face either No. 8 Virginia Tech or No. 9 Alabama in the second round.

he Ss. Neumann-Goretti boys basketball team, the defending Class 3A state champs, has its sights set on securing a spot in this weekend’s quarterfinal action. First, they need to eliminate Wyoming Seminary in tonight’s second-round contest. Game time is 7:30 p.m at Bethlehem Freedom High School. The Saints opened tournament play with a 80-59 victory over Steelton-Highspire on Saturday. Noah Warren led Neumann-Goretti with 28 points. The Neumann-Goretti girls basketball team is looking for a repeat of its own, and a win against Loyalsock Township last night after press time would put them one step closer toward that goal. The quarterfinal round will take place on Friday (March 16) against the winner of the Saint Basil/

Holy Redeemer contest. The Saints opened the Class 3A tournament with a 69-32 victory over Pine Grove. Several other South Philadelphia-based teams were eliminated in last week’s first-round action. In boys basketball Class 3A action, Mastery Charter South lost to the previously mentioned Wyoming Seminary, 62-47. In other Class 3A news, the Mastery Charter South girls basketball team was defeated by York Catholic, 62-40. The Prep Charter girls basketball team fell to Bishop McDevitt, 78-26, in the first round of the Class 4A tournament. Universal Audenried competed in the same bracket. While the result was much closer, 44-42, Lower Moreland is the team that advanced to the second round. In the girls 5A bracket, Southern Lehigh defeated the Academy at Palumbo, 76-20.
