RWKHU 1DWXUH \RX KDYH PH SX] ]OHG Just a couple of weeks ago, residents were chatting it up about how February was the warmest on record. We are talking about a month when the average temperature was 44.2 degrees. Here is a another shocking figure — 1925. This is the last time, according to NBC10 Philadelphia, when we experienced the warmest February. The average temp way back then was 42.2 degrees. Who was around to see it? It’s almost like Old Man Winter hibernated through half his season. Well, he is awake now — wide awake — and, at the time of this writing, he tried to cripple South Philadelphia with Winter Storm Stella. Yes, we are talking about a nor’easter following a February in which

we were delighted by 70-plus degree days. This weather pattern is more volatile than the stock market during a recession. It’s been so mild that Home Depot may fall short of its quarterly earning estimates due to poor shovel and snow blower sales. Well, maybe not. Enough of this depressing nonsense. Spring is scheduled to arrive on March 20 (Monday, for those checking). We use the word “scheduled very loosely. The early forecast calls for 41 degrees and sunny. Not exactly what I would call spring-like conditions. The South Philly Review’s annual Spring Guide, on the other hand, is filled with delightful news. Our expanded calendar section features the Phillies schedule — the home opener is April 7 at 3:05 p.m. against the Washington Nationals. There are plenty of South Philly-based festivals,

too. East Passyunk Avenue is holding its annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 8 and Flavors of the Avenue on April 24. The South Ninth Street Italian Market Festival — better known as Philadelphia’s largest block party — is slated for May 20-21. April 8 will mark the 10-year anniversary of the Philly Spring Cleanup. The likes of Metallica and U2 are booked at Lincoln Financial Field. We are just getting started. Enough with the small talk. It’s time to announce the winners of the Readers’ Choice Awards. There was some great interaction from voters. Instead of simply voting for a particiular establishment, many could not help raving about a particular sandwich. Since this is the Readers’ Choice issue, those voices have been heard, as we added an additional writeup for cheesesteak. Sorry, you have to keep flipping through to find out who we are talking about. Here’s a little teaser .... it’s

not who you think it is. The Readers’ Choice section highlights 21 people/places that South Philadelphians have fallen in love with, and support regularly. Hey, with the Villanova Wildcats playing their first-round game tonight, the issue may help with solving that where to order-in from dilemma. So, as we make our official break from winter — it’s coming sooner than Season 7 of “Game of Thrones — we must stop thinking about snow, nor’easters and below-freezing temps. The snow will melt, and it will get warmer. For now, cozy up under a blanket with a hot beverage of choice, and enjoy this year’s Spring Guide. If nothing else, you can start thinking about the sunny and delightful days ahead. A>@ Contact Editor Bill Gelman at bgelman@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 121. za, with a second location at Front Street and Snyder Avenue, continues to please customers with what they describe as “one of the best doughs around. It’s the key ingredient to the crust, which continues to score high marks. The basics — plain or pepperoni — are consistently among the top sellers. The City Old Style Pizza, a thin-crust square pie, brushed with olive oil, fresh garlic and Romano cheese with a layer of thin sliced mozzarella and topped with crushed plum tomatoes, is another popular pie. Hungry for something else? Try the City Steak — a blend of mozzarella, American, cheddar with freshly cooked steak and choice of onions or peppers. Don’t worry, Nagel and the rest of the City Pizza team are ready to handle all of those NCAA tournament time orders. Lorenzo’s Pizza grabbed a slice of second while Francoluigi and Celebre’s Pizzeria shared a taste of third. -B.G.

That ability to adapt, be it for large parties, small gatherings, funeral luncheons, receptions, or other occasions, reflects the evolving identity of the industry, with Rucci quick to compare the past and the present. “At other times, a place could survive because people went there for the food, or the ambience, or the staff, or the cleanliness,â€? she noted. “Today, there are no ‘ors.’ You have to be great in every area to stand out, and we’re there.â€? Emphasizing mutability as another necessity, Rucci, whose 24-year-old spot could accommodate an eye-opening total of 450 patrons, said that no matter which changes she implements, fairness and honesty will always guide her actions, a stance that board member status for the South Philadelphia Business Association confirms. While the other elements are definitely commendable, guests delight in deliberating over the menu items, with Rucci especially glad when they select the crab cakes, a former Readers’ Choice victor, and Popi’s veal products. Revealing that operations are “all about presentation and perception,â€? she loves having this prestigious honor as a reflection of her commitment. “There are many great places in South

Philly, Rucci said, noting visits to a few to gain insights into how Popi’s could improve. “To stand above them all makes me proud. Thank you. Ristorante Pesto seated itself in second, and Villa di Roma cried “Mangia in third. -J.M.

The Garden State resident arrives at the 16-year-old space at 6 a.m. six days a week, and offers a variety of peerless proteins until 5 p.m. on weekdays and 4:30 p.m. Saturdays. He does not deem the schedule at all daunting and thrives on the pressure no matter the time of year, with the Lenten and Christmas seasons as supreme tests of his durability. “The attention to detail is what keeps everyone happy,â€? he said of a mindset that helps him to become not only a preferred purveyor among locals but also a good friend to many of them. “It’s a simple approach for me – Keep quality at its utmost because consumers deserve that consideration,â€? he said. Being ready for their requests has enabled Lombardi, 51, et al to remain relevant and respected at a time when his vocation has become “a dying art.â€? He relayed that many residents feel such loyalty to him that they have taken to confessing guilt over making supermarket excursions on Sundays, the crew’s lone day off. That camaraderie counts for so much for the second-generation owner, who is looking to sustaining the location’s influence by guiding son Vincent as his eventual successor. “Whether someone has come here for years or just stopped for the first time yesterday, I need to make an impression,â€? Lombardi said of sating demands for delectable options, which relationships with six suppliers make possible. “No matter how long I have done this or will end up doing it, there’s never a day where I will forget how proud I feel to have their trust.â€? hen we put together the 2017 Readers’ Choice ballot, cheesesteak was not included among the original 20 categories. We were saving it for next month’s Food Issue, but the voters spoke loud and clean in the voting process, raving about the cheesesteaks from Lorenzo’s Pizza, 900 Christian St. Being that this is the Readers’ Choice Issue, there is always room for one more. “It’s just an honor to be recognized,â€? owner Keith Vello said. “There are a lot of pizza and sandwich shops out there that focus on cheesesteaks. It’s definitely an honor that people voted for us.â€? Keith’s father, George, purchased Lorenzo’s Pizza 39 years ago, and kept building on the already popular location. While other cheesesteak joints around town are considered tourist destinations, this spot, which sits at the gateway to South Ninth Street Italian Market, continue to leave a lasting impression with customers. Vello noted they sell about three to four dozen cheesesteaks during weekdays and eight dozen on Saturdays. Besides making sandwiches, the Lorenzo’s team has a loyal customer base 60 to 70 strong, many of whom they know on a firstname basis. Vello also knows when the mailman comes in, there is a very good chance he is going to order a cheesesteak with fried onions and hot peppers on the :]`S\h]¸a >WhhO

side. He also noted the cheesesteak with fried onions and sweet peppers is a popular seller. Instead of being just another corner sandwich and pizza joint, the ingredients are a big part of what earns Lorenzo’s high praise. Vello said they use high-quality meats, with the rolls from South Jersey-based Liscio’s Bakery serving as the foundation for the award-winning cheesesteak. American is the go-to cheese, but provolone and whiz are also available. All sandwiches are made as you order. There are about 20 seats inside, with additional seating outside, allowing customers to enjoy their cheesesteak fresh off the grill. Vello also noted that they have a strong take-out business. John’s Roast Pork staked its claim for s e c - ond place while Tony Luke’s got a meaty taste of third. -B.G.

sgro Pastries first opened its doors to the South Philly community in 1904, and since 1978 the familyowned

7aU`] >OabS`WSa shop has been operated under the leadership of the original owner’s grandson, Gus Isgro. Alongside other members of his family, Isgro, 1009 Christian Street, constantly seeks to maintain the integrity of his family’s name through producing the highest quality of pastries. There is no doubt that the system is working, as the popular Bella Vista spot has earned bragging rights for top bakery. “People keep coming back because of the consistent quality that we offer,â€? Isgro said. “I don’t change much unless there’s ingredients that we’ve used for years that I can no longer get.â€? Trained by his grandfather, Mario Isgro, who studied culinary arts in Vienna, Italy and went on to open a pastry shop in Messina, Italy, the 69-year-old owner says he takes great pride in his job. With help from his wife, Lucille, sons AJ, 28, and Michael 39, and approximately 18 other employees, Isgro offers only hand-made products still made in the store’s basement. Most often identified with the Isgro name are the thousands of cannolis it puts out each week. The shop’s Italian crème cake is also among the highest ordered products, specially made in a big copper kettle with ricotta and Italian vanilla crème fillings — just like how Isgro’s grandfather used to make it. “I would also recommend our homemade nougat terrone,â€? Isgro said. “It’s really labor intensive, has an intricate formula and is only offered four months out of the year, from October through March.â€? Despite having received offers to sell his products at the Jersey Shore and in casinos, Isgro believes multiple locations would mean having to compromise his oversight and the quality associated with the Isgro

However, in the time since he assumed ownership, Isgro noted that improvements such as better refrigeration have come to help growth and inventory, as well as to lessen turnovers. “It’s so flattering to be recognized for our work, because we try so hard without compromise, Isgro said. “If I gave into compromising a product just once it would be easier to do it again. hen Anthony Messina and Frank Sangiuliano opened Pastificio 12 years ago, they didn’t exactly plan on going into the sandwich business. Manufacturing fresh pasta was the initial focus. Then something happened on the road to success - the sandwiches just took off. When SPR readers were asked to crown the best specialty sandwich in the south side of Philly, guess who landed in the winner’s circle. That’s right, Pastificio, 1528 Packer Ave. “We are honored, Messina said. “In South Philly there are a ton of sandwich places, a lot of well-known places. In these parts, the Pastificio’s Italian hoagie is the talk of the town and beyond, and it includes winning Phily Mag’s Best of Philly honor. Messina noted that members of the Philadelphia Eagles and city officials have stopped in to place orders. Others come from Delaware and around the tri-state area to see what all of the fuss is about. Shipping orders to the west coast is not out of the question.

For those who are not fans of the Italian hoagie, the meatballs, which are rolled and made fresh daily are another popular item. So are the chicken cutlets. “We do a wide variety of sandwiches and specialties, Messina said. “Everything is made in house. PrimoHoagies served up a second-place order while Ricci’s Hoagies earned a thirdplace filling. -B.G.

Granted her request to jettison an Old City post, she has spent a year cashing in on the benefits of helping people to realize their financial goals and dreams through the location, 1544 Packer Ave., this year’s top bank honoree. “There’s such a great feel to this site, Hirsch, also a company vice president, said of representing her employer within the Packer Park Shopping Center. “The fact that we’re extremely busy every single day is a testament to the trust that community members have in us, and that’s not something that we take lightly. With 4,000 accounts, including those for many thriving South Philly businesses, the branch operates under Hirsch’s assertion that banking need not be institutional, meaning that the eight employees are well-schooled in being personable. “I’m here to help everyone grow in confidence, especially our customers, because, let’s face it, talking about money, especially investments, can be terrifying, the manager said. “The rewards of being calm and patient with people are endless, and it’s amazing when you can watch great things happen for them. With two decades in the field, the Marconi East resident knows that those fears and ultimate successes require a sensible institution to address and commend them and has therefore set high standards for her peers, and their seamless ability to exceed expectations pleases her daily. With news of PNC’s designation as residents’ most revered spot, Hirsch expressed joy comparable to that of cared-for customers and looks forward to greater gains as her tenure back home unfolds. “I’m ecstatic, she said. “It proves that

here are you sending your child to preschool? Yes, there are plenty of options here in South Philly. But it seems one place is continuing to make a strong first impression with local readers. The best day care honor goes to, you guessed it, First Impressions. “We feel very honored and excited about being named the top day care in South Philadelphia by SPR readers, Lauren Pauzano-Tuttle, the director of First Impres-

sions, said. “We owe our success to our amazing staff and to our families, both past and present, who continue to support us. Roxanna Bariana and RoseAnne Pauzano opened First Impressions Nursery School in 1984 in Queen Village. They opened an additional Packer Park location in 2004 on 20th and Hartraft streets, and Lauren RoseAnne’s daughter - joined them as director. There are programs for little ones from as young as 8 weeks old up to pre-K. When searching for a day care around South Philly, sometimes the name is all it takes to catch the attention of potential families. When Bariana came up with the name, she had a “vision of this being a child’s First Impression of life outside of home. A big part of that impression is creating a trusting atmosphere in which parents can go off to work and not have to worry about how their son or daughter is doing. The First Impressions staff plays a big role in creating that trustworthy atmosphere. “It is through our dedicated staff, who have been with us for years, that we are able to do this, Pauzano-Tuttle said. “We also focus our attention on academics and providing our students with the ability to succeed and also challenge them to meet their full potential so they excel in grade school. Our families come as strangers, and always leave as part of the First Impressions family! Alphabet Academy registered in second place while Little Beginnings opened the door to the third place. -B.G,

Fast-forward to present day, and Rey, 61, is making a lasting impression with his customers who have crowned Armando Rey Jewelers, 816 S. Ninth St., the Readers’ Choice winner for top jeweler. “It’s a great honor to receive the Reader’s Choice award, and just to be acknowledged by the customers who we service in South Philly, Rey said. “We’re glad that they think we’re special and the best in the area. Before becoming a fixture in the Bella Vista neighborhood, Rey moved into the first-floor apartment of his parent’s house where he officially began gaining accounts and completing projects for other jewelry stores as Armando Rey Jewelers. Although there was no sign in front of his apartment, he spent 19 years there building up clientele and inventory, while working many 16-hour days. “Over the years we built up a lot of customers one at a time, he said. “We built the business up by word of mouth, and with people recommending other people. During those 19 years people who were recommended would just knock on our front door. Then, in 1999, at age 44, Rey opened his store at its present location. It has been a Rey family affair with wife, Alyce, father, the late Renen Rey, and daughter Lauren, 32, helping customers pick out the perfect pieces. Rey’s other daughter, Deanna, a 28-year-old teacher, also assists at the store during the holiday season. “People come back to us because we offer good service, are honest and friendly, Rey said. “We have become friends with most of our customers. lthough its name is Ten Pennies, Ann Catania, the founder of the flower shop located at 1921 S. Broad St., describes the love she has for her shop as priceless. Growing up on 12th and Morris streets, Catania recalls always admiring the home decor her mother and father, Jennie and Joe Messina, had on display. She remembers the beautiful flower arrangements her mother would create, leading her to believe as a child that her family must be millionaires. “Although my mother died when I was 12, I learned in 12 years what some girls can’t learn in a lifetime, she said. “Too many people forget that their parents are the ones who made them who they are, and every day of my life I remember what mine were to me and why I am the woman I am today. It includes running a very successful business, as Ten Pennies has once again earned the Readers’ Choice Award for top florist. “It’s such an honor to win Readers’ Choice because I am born and raised in South Philadelphia and still happy to be a part of this community, even though we do deliver all over the tri-state area, Catania said. “It’s an honor to know that the public chose us. Catania initially followed a different career path. At age 20, she began working in public relations and in the business office

>S\`]aS 2W\S` of the former St. Agnes Medical Center. Also dating her then-boyfriend and laterhusband, Jerry Catania, at the time, when she first had him over to her apartment he immediately asked her where she had bought her flower arrangements. When Catania said she made the decorations herself, Jerry told her that she was extremely creative and too talented to be working in an office. This inspired Catania to open her own business, and in 1980 she did just that. Located directly across from St. Agnes, Ten Pennies began as a silk flower shop, with long-lasting decorations in displays that were designed to resemble a living room, kitchen, bedroom, etc. Six months later, Catania began selling fresh flowers. “We’ve been here for forever and a day, Catania said. “We make sure that, whether a client spend $5 or $500, we treat them all as special and equal, because they’re all just as important to us. Additionally, she explained that 10 Pennies’ motto is that “we would never sell something that we would not like to receive ourselves. “I still have a passion for what i do after all these years, Catania said. “My passion is in pleasing each client so that we have their continued business. Betty Ann’s Italian Market Florist blossomed in second and Petal Pusher filled a thirdplace display. lanning a funeral is never a good thing. The idea of losing a loved one is something none of us enjoy dealing with, but it’s part of life. Residents count on the staff at their neighborhood funeral home to aid them through the grieving process. When asked to single one out, SPR readers voted for MontiRago Funeral Home Inc., 2531-35 South Broad St., as their No. 1 choice. Mark J. Rago, who has been working at the site since age 16, said it’s quite an honor. “It shows the hard work we do is pleasing our neighborhood families, he said. “I am glad it’s noticed, and I am glad we are able to please the families we serve. It’s the most important thing for us. The family relies on their experience and expertise to make the grieving process as easy as possible. “We leave no stone unturned, we address everything, Rago said. It helps having founder Samuel J. Monti, who is now in his early 90s, still active in the business. Rago started learning the business from Monti during his days as a student at St. John Neumann High School. He used to leave school early to help set up the flowers at the funeral home. “What I picked up from Mr. Monti is that you are there to help the families at a terrible time, Rago said. “It’s important that everything is done right and trustworthy at the time of the funeral service. You are going to run into the families, you want to feel like you’ve done right. Monti-Rago went through a complete renovation of the entire facility in 2009, and it offers fully handicapped accessible rest-

outh Philadelphia has its second mayor in my lifetime. But there could not be two more different people than Jim Kenney and Frank Rizzo. The divide between Kenney and Rizzo is as deep as that between Donald Trump and Barack Obama. And like Obama and Trump, they stir the pot of controversy with a righteous certainty. Kenney’s roots in this area go deeper than those of Rizzo who lived here only briefly. But compared to Rizzo, Kenney is largely viewed without honor in South Philadelphia. Kenney’s critics feel that he has betrayed his roots. They remember when he was one of them. Jimmy is the oldest of four kids. A neighbor in the Whitman section. The son of working-class parents. Went to the neighborhood parochial school with them. Smart enough to go to St. Joe’s Prep. Became the first in his family to graduate college. Marched as a Mummer. Unlike some of the area’s other local sons, he didn’t get elected to City Council as the first step toward a prison sentence. This area is forgiving — make that too forgiving — of its political sons who wind up serving jail time. We not only still honor some of our fallen, sometimes we even re-elect them. That wasn’t a concern with Jimmy. He was a bright light from the beginning. A straight arrow. Didn’t get taken down by the Vince Fumo mess. I remember a former editor of this newspaper telling me that she had interviewed two South Philadelphians at that time who’d recently been elected to City Council — Frank DiCicco and Jim Kenney. She was impressed with the intelligence of both men. Thought they were several cuts above the kind of politicians who usually came out of this area. She was right. As an at-large member of City Council, Kenney took a genuine interest in quality-oflife issues. He was passionate. Almost obsessive in his belief that citizens have the right to be free to live decent lives. Stories about Kenney’s dedication to quality of life for South Philadelphians became legendary. He supposedly stopped prostitutes from shopping their wares down here. Kept them away from our neighborhoods. Here’s the rub. Kenney showed an interest in socially liberal causes. No city official has been friendlier to the LGBT community. These are the kinds of causes that don’t especially endear you around here. But a lot of that was largely ignored by South Philadelphians because Kenney did the necessary grunt work required of a councilman. Hell, being a liberal was just one of Jimmy’s “quirks. You could call his office, and have a good chance of Kenney answering

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

his office phone. A lunch pail politician. When Kenney decided to run for Mayor in 2015, the field was crowded. Jimmy was a long shot. But Council President Darrell Clarke — likely the favorite — decided not to run and his main opponent, Anthony Williams, fizzled. Kenney became the surprise Democratic nominee for mayor. As we all know, the Democratic nominee for mayor in Philadelphia is tantamount to winning the election. But the surprise to most political observers was the way Kenney brought together the different elements of the Democratic Party — the unions — the Center City liberals — and all the factions in between. The result was a landslide. Kenney’s agenda has been ambitious. That scared some of the conservative media in Philadelphia. He was compared to the liberal mayor of New York Bill de Blasio, a favorite target of conservatives. Kenney lacked the right temperament. Maybe even drank too much, they hinted. He was a loose cannon with a Twitter account. As mayor, Kenney has shown none of these so-called personality flaws. But policy-wise, the mayor has been the fiery liberal they feared. Even had a public spat with Archbishop Chaput. Kenney has been a local counter force to Donald Trump. He eliminated the policy of arresting kids — many of them minorities — for possessing small amounts of marijuana and replaced that penalty with fines. Much to the chagrin of the soda industry, Kenney got his sugary drinks tax through City Council and into law. The tax will fund an ambitious pre-K program and update recreation centers and libraries around the city. Tax revenue so far has exceeded projections, but the beverage industry is not going quietly. As expected, the tax is being challenged in the courts. The industry claims the tax is costing the city jobs. But perhaps even a bigger firestorm is building over Kenney’s insistence on designating Philadelphia as a sanctuary city. Critics claim that Kenney’s policy has allowed dangerous criminals to go free, although the city’s existing policy is not to release convicted felons. This columnist worries that noncompliance by local governments with federal law sets a bad precedent and is easily abused. But now President Trump has expanded federal enforcement of immigration laws. Wholesale deportation seems his goal. Separation of mothers from their children when apprehended at the border is being considered. Humanity seems to cry out for resistance. The Trump Administration is promising to withhold federal funds from sanctuary cities such as Philadelphia. So far Kenney has stood firm. Kenney’s causes are noble, but they don’t resonate in South Philadelphia. This is still Rizzo country. Trump country. And by the way, have you turned your back on the Mummers, Jimmy? Jim Kenney may well become a great mayor. But they won’t be naming any streets for him around here. Maybe that’s our fault. A>@

Like funeral homes and sandwich shops, there are plenty of South Philly auto mechanics around. But the 11th Street Auto team has built a loyal following that continues coming back. “After all of these years, you have some new people moving in, which keeps it fresh, Saur said. “In some cases we are dealing with the third generation of family members, taking care of their cars. Pinnacle Auto Repairs and Tires pulled into second while Dom’s Auto Repair parked in third. -B.G.

A cut above the rest

E

hen Frank Saur received a phone call last week that 11th Street Auto had earned Readers’ Choice bragging rights for auto mechanic, his first words were “I am thrilled beyond belief.

E

hen SPR reached out to Sherry Lanphear about being the Readers’ Choice for top hairstylist, the news caught her a little off guard. She thought someone was pulling a fast one on her. Nope, this is the real deal. “Well, that’s amazing, Lanphear, who performs her hair services at Laurentius

I am very honored. The 43-year-old took hair styling classes as a high school student, and went on to get a teaching degree. She went on to teach others about hair, but decided she was destined to be a hair stylist. It also helps that the Girard Estate resident, who is now 43, loves being part of the Laurentius Salon team. “There is no other salon in the city that runs quite as nice as this salon, she said. Women make up the majority of her clientele, but Lanphear said she doesn’t discriminate. Men, children and all others are welcome. When a client sits in Lanphear’s chair, it’s all about making sure they leave feeling good about themselves. “When they look better, they feel better, she said. here are a good amount of people out there who hate going to the dentist. For some, it’s fear while others just don’t like visiting the dentist. But there are still a good amount of people who make appointments for a routine cleaning, cavity filling, root canal or other procedure. Drs. William Mestichelli and Michael Barnes, 1903 S. Broad St., have created such a comfort zone that their patients could not stop praising the team in the Readers’ Choice voting.

“We just appreciate all of the people who have been coming to us over the years, Mestichelli said. “It’s the great staff we have that has been keeping people around. He has been a staple in the South Philly dental community for decades, with previous office locations at 1815 S. Broad St., 1727 S. Broad St., and 1905 S. Broad St. — the former home of Angelo Bruno. Like many people in the medical field, Mestichelli has others to credit for giving him his start. Dr. Michael Ruggieri and Dr. John Vivacqua provided a strong foundation to his career path. “I could not have asked for two better people to learn from and be in practice with, he said. He is a product of the Temple University Dental School, who has been practicing in South Philadelphia since 1982. Barnes, his son-in-law, has since joined the team. Daughters Amanda Rabena-McNally and Jaclyn Barnes are the co-office managers. The doctor’s ties to the area include being an avid Phillies fan and season ticket holder. One of his other hobbies includes doing construction — we are not talking about the inside-of-the-mouth variety. It includes doing work inside of his office space. As far as what’s keeping him around all these years, Mestichelli simply enjoys his job. “I’ve had a lot of fun over the years, he said. “It’s more like a hobby for me. Moskovitz Dental Associates enjoyed a second-place filling and Dr. John Del Gaiso of Dr. John’s Pediatric Dental Team flossed in third.-B.G.

Well-scripted

r. Joseph Renzi welcomes patients young and old — we are talking as young as 16 and as old as 101. No matter his or her age, he takes an interest in each and every patient. That caring approach has earned him the top doctor honor in this year’s Readers’ Choice voting. “I am very happy to hear, Renzi said of the news. “It’s so nice and flattering. His office space at 1324 W. Ritner St. is part of the Jefferson Health system. His specialty is family medicine. Speaking of family, his provided the inspiration to join the medical field. His father was a physician while his uncle was a radiologist at Methodist.

“Their experience and dedication inspired me to be the doctor I am today, he said. It includes doing whatever he can to make sure his patients enjoy a healthy and active lifestyle. Renzi is born and raised in South Philly, attending Bishop Neumann High School. He currently resides in Packer Park. Now, his son, Christopher Renzi, is following in his footsteps. “I am overjoyed that my son has recently started at the practice, Renzi said. Dr. Peter Honig placed second and Dr. Joseph Steingard followed in third. -B.G. A>@

All’s fare

Kathleen’s Potato Pie

O

ne potato, two potato ... OK, we can stop at five potatoes, even though you may not be able to stop humming the potato song. Seriously, we are talking about food here, more specifically another recipe contribution from Kathleen Valle, who as you probably guessed, is sharing her Potato Pie offering. The great thing about potato dishes is they work well with just about any main course, including the main staples of chicken, meat or fish. Don’t worry, singing that silly song is not a prerequisite for making Kathleen’s dish.

Eagles free agent signing gets great reception 2/D3 A>/2/@=

their first Super Bowl since the 1980 season. Maybe having that star receiver really made a difference. Well, the Eagles haven’t had anything like that magical Year of Owens (I’m closing my eyes and pretending that the nightmare of 2005, when Owens was banished from the team and ultimately released after the season, didn’t happen), but now, thanks to a creative way of doing business in the NFL’s free agency period, the Eagles just might have themselves a T.O., Part Deaux. By signing Alshon Jeffery to a one-year contract (more on that later), the Eagles have themselves a player who has been a dominating, difference-making wide receiver in his NFL career. Jeffery, very much in his prime at the age of 27, was as good as anyone for two of his five seasons as a Chicago Bear, catching 89 passes for 1,421 yards and seven touchdowns in 2013 to make the Pro Bowl, and then coming back with 85 receptions, 1,133 yards and 10 scores the next year.

N 3Z[e]]R >O`Y ;cabO\Ua The Southwest Philly-based Elmwood Park Mustangs 13-15 travel baseball team is seeking players for the upcoming season. Tryouts begin on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. at 77th Street and Elmwood Avenue. Interested players should report to the field. For additional information, call Brian Franklin, 215 285-1509, or the Cibotti Recreation Center, 215-685-4194.

N <4: 2`OTb 3f^S`WS\QS The NFL Draft will be held in Philadelphia from April 27-29, and to celebrate one of the most anticipated sporting events of the spring, the NFL is transforming part of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway into the NFL Draft Experience, a free expansive outdoor football festival.

His most recent two seasons have been marred by injury (a hamstring in 2015) and a four-game suspension for violating the league’s substance-abuse policy (2016), so Jeffery’s Q rating has dropped. So have his numbers. And, clearly, so did his stock in free agency, because Jeffery signed a one-year deal with the Eagles rather than taking a mega-deal with another team. There simply were no multi-year, breakthe-bank offers to be had. So Jeffery is an Eagle, and it could be a winwin situation. The Eagles need a game-breaking wide receiver. Jeffery needs a big-time quarterback, and part of the reason – a very large part, in fact – Jeffery signed in Philadelphia was to play with second-year franchise player Carson Wentz. “I think Carson is a special talent, Jeffery said. “I can’t wait to get started with him. I think he’s going to help me and I think I’m going to help him. I’m very excited about this. So is the team and so are the fans. With apologies to DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Ma-

clin, the Eagles haven’t been able to replicate the season of bliss from T.O. And while it’s not fair to say that Jeffery’s addition puts the Eagles in the conversation for the Super Bowl, it is reasonable to expect a huge jump in the passing game. “Alshon, at his best, takes over games, said Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman. “We think he’s going to come here and play great football and really improve our football team. We’re excited to have him. And the fans are excited, too. In 2004, the sing-song chants of “T.O., T.O., T.O., T.O. resonated through Lincoln Financial Field and the city’s neighborhoods on game days. It was an instant love affair. Is Alshon Jeffery destined to capture the hearts of a fan base craving a big-time wide receiver? Let the singing begin. A>@
