Battle of the Sexes

ometimes I think the worst thing that happened to women’s sports was when Billie Jean King beat Bobby Riggs in 1973. At that time, King was rated the No. Tom Cardella 1 female tennis player in the world. Riggs, then 55, was 26 years older than King. He had once been a top tennis player, but by 1973, he was hardly that. Riggs was known as a tennis hustler. He came up with the idea of challenging the top female tennis players in the world in what came to be known as the Battle of the Sexes. To set up the series, Riggs publicly claimed that female tennis players were inferior. He would prove it by playing and beating the best of them. Most of us remember that Riggs’ challenge resulted in a $100,000 winner-

Set in 1860s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of an unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher, whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children. In this production, Philippineborn Joan Almedilla takes the role of Lady Thiang, the King’s Chief Wife and mother of the Crown Prince. She is fiercely loyal to her husband and her country. According to Almedilla, growing up she always loved to sing but wasn’t particularly interested in acting. But through her love of music, she stumbled upon the much-coveted role of Kim in the Broadway production of “Miss Saigon.â€? “I always loved music, and through this role I realized the beauty of the theater,â€? Almedilla points out. “Actually, the theater teaches you something about life. It shapes you.â€? Unlike most theater actors who spend years honing their craft, Al-

Yet today she is one of the most sought-after actresses in the theater, having previously landed coveted roles in such productions as “Les MisĂŠrables,â€? “Jesus Christ Superstarâ€? (which brought her to Philadelphia once before), “Songs For a New Worldâ€? and others. Amedilla says she’s now thrilled to have this role in one of her favorite Rodgers and Hammerstein shows. “Lady Thiang orchestrates much that happens in the palace. If anything dishonors the King or her country, it makes her do whatever needs to be done to fix the situation. And she has lots of interaction with Mrs. Anna. In fact, one of her most important duties is to make sure Mrs. Anna understands that behind his rough exterior, the King is a wonderful, kind man.â€? Almedilla also enjoys the opportunity to sing one of the show’s favorite songs, “Something Wonderful,â€? and appear in a show with her young son, CJ, who plays one of the royal children. “It’s a thrill to watch him work, although when he’s rehearsing I

SULQJ KDV DUULYHG Yes, some of you out there — teachers and students — may have started the unofficial countdown to the last day of school (here’s hoping we have heard the words “snow day for the last time). Before we close the doors on another school year, and it will be here before we know it, it’s time to recognize the standout students from the 2016-17 school year. Once a year, in June, the South Philly Review recognizes these individuals in a special edition called Rising Stars. June 8 will be here before we know it. Like other special issues, the Rising Stars is a massive undertaking. We are counting on principals, guidance counselors and teachers to let us know which students are worthy of being included on the nomination list. Call it the Rising Stars talent search. Students in grades first through 12 are eligible. Nominees must be from South Philly or attend a school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 and 19148 zip codes. Yes, a student from South Philly who attends Roman Catholic High School is eligible. Same deal with John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls’ High School, Julia R. Masterman School and all the others. Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are both strong points, but not the only criteria being taken into consideration.

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m Maybe your student has made a dramatic academic turnaround since the first semester or overcome a personal hardship. We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. Is there someone you have in mind? If so, send us an e-mail or letter, sharing as many details as possible about your star pupil. For instance, what is the reason for nominating your student? What academic achievements has the student achieved? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? Remember, sharing as many details as possible is key. Nomination letters can be submitted via e-mail, bgelman@bsmphilly.com, or regular mail, South Philly Review, 2 Executive Campus, Suite 400, Cherry Hill, N.J. 08002, or fax, 215-336-1112. The submission deadline is noon May 8. All entries will be reviewed by the selection committee, with each of the finalists receiving a profile in the June 8 Rising Stars issue. A special event is also in the planning stages. Good luck. E-mail questions to Editor Bill Gelman, bgelman@bsmphilly.com. A>@ -By Bill Gelman

Former Capt. George Kappe was promoted to inspector. Newly-minted Capt. Krista Dahl Campbell was one of 11 lieutenants promoted to captain and was appointed as the new commanding officer of the 26th on March 6. “This opportunity is great and I’m honored to have it and I’m very excited about it, Dahl Campbell said. Dahl Campbell grew up in Lansdale, but she was no stranger to the city she has served for more than a decade. “My grandparents lived in the Lawncrest section of the city, so I was in the city a lot, she said. Dahl Campbell attended Lansdale Catholic High School and graduated from Penn State University, where she studied crime, law and justice. Her first job out of college, a victim advocate, is what laid the groundwork for a career in law enforcement, according to Dahl Campbell. “Being a victim advocate in hindsight was an ideal way to learn about crime before joining the police department. It gave me a really unique perspective to what happens to a victim of crime, she said. “Police show up and do a great job helping in the moment, but there’s so much that victims go through afterwards that police really don’t get to see.

Her three-year experience with a private, nonprofit in South Philadelphia carved out “a special place in [her] heart for victims of crime. While she wasn’t a police officer, Dahl Campbell’s grandmother was a role model for her as she set up for a career in law enforcement. “She lived through the Great Depression and showed me what it was like to be a strong woman, she said. “I always wanted to do my best to make her proud and be like her. In 2005, Dahl Campbell graduated from the Philadelphia Police Academy. Her first assignment was to patrol in the 17th Police District. For six years, she learned the streets of South Philly. “I loved my time in the 17th as an officer, she said. “From there, I made sergeant. Dahl Campbell served as a sergeant in the 12th Police District in Southwest Philly for two years and was promoted to lieutenant and was assigned to patrol in the 9th Police District in Center City. “They were all great assignments and taught me a lot, she said. For the past two years, Dahl Campbell has served in the citywide Victims Services Community Relations Unit. “It was definitely a great fit for me, she said. As captain, victims of crimes are a definite priority. “I certainly believe in community policing, so I’m on the same train of thought as Inspector Kappe, she said, “and I’m also very victim-centered, so I want to make sure that people who have experienced something difficult are taken care of and justice prevails for them. And as far as a relationship with the community goes, expect to see Dahl Campbell out and about. “I’m excited about being able to be out in the community, she said. “Being a captain of a district comes with the ability to interact with a lot of people and community groups, and I really enjoy that. Initiatives will happen once Dahl Campbell “really gets to know the neighborhood, but there is always a focus on “violent crime and property crime. A>@ Comment at police-report.

HESTIA continued from page 1 response, she hopes to use this opportunity as a way to continue building her brand, in addition to promoting the renovations of other, more interesting properties throughout the area. “I want to encourage more people to pay attention to South Philly, Street said. “It’s currently one of the best areas in the country to invest, and it offers world-class amenities. However, it needs more thoughtful renovations that honor the history of the properties, restoring their interesting details instead of eliminating their character. BASED OUT OF 1529 South 11th Street, the 33-year-old Philly-native’s company initially stuck out to The Michael Group based off it’s Instagram account. Always in search of

run-down or abandoned homes to transform into exciting modern spaces, Street admitted that she was both nervous and excited about the chance to showcase her talents on air. . “I studied opera at Temple University and later moving to Italy to perform, so I was used to performing but this was a totally different environment, Street said. “The most challenging part was getting everything done so quickly and learning to feel comfortable on camera. Yet, adding to her experience in deal-

ing with properties and with her ability to turn projects around quickly, when Street returned from her time abroad, she began working with her father in real estate. When he passed away suddenly in 2013, Street chose to start her own construction company, opening Hestia in ’14. “I couldn’t afford to buy nice houses to rent out, so I started buying the run-down properties, she said. “There are definitely some challenges working in a male-dominated industry, but I think women can bring a different perspective to things and hopefully people continue to like my

designs. Although her work is time and resource exhaustive, Street hopes to step-up as a leader in preserving some of the beautiful architectural history of South Philadelphia. To achieve this goal, she chooses a few “special homes to renovate and sell each year, in addition to her renovation projects for clients. “My work over the years has gone amazingly, Street said. “It’s been super rewarding to get to see what is done at the end of each day, and with the support of the community. Hopefully people will like what they see on the show. A>@ For more information about Hestia Construction, LLC, visit: hestiaphilly.com or .facebook.com/hestiaphilly. DYH \RX YRWHG IRU WKH )RRGLH \HW" If you haven’t, what are you waiting for? This is the last week the ballot for “best of bragging rights is appearing in print. The polls close on Monday, with a whole lotta tallying to follow. The response from readers has been amazing. Our Facebook page has been blowing up with people sharing opinions about which place has the best cannoli, breakfast sandwich, water ice, wings around the south side of Philly. In terms of neighborhood bragging rights, well, that news is being kept under wraps for a couple more weeks. We are going to make it worth the wait. Each winner will be invited to showcase their winning item at a special food event taking place on April 20 at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. There’s more. Who misses the South Philly Review’s annual Pizza Olympics? We billed it as the biggest pizza party South Philly has ever seen. Well, keep June 22

open as a revamped version of this slicetasting affair is returning to Penns Landing Caterers with a new name: Pizza Palooza. Sticking with the SPR special event theme, we are teaming up with an old friend to host a special oldies dance party. We are talking about “The Geator with the Heaterâ€? — South Philly’s own Jerry Blavat. Besides the line dancing and playing the golden oldies from the likes of Chubby Checker, Dion, Kenny Vance and The Planotones, Diana Ross and The Supremes and others, this one is booked for a night of good times. There will be a buffet, too. Penns Landing Caterers will be the place to be on May 12. We will be announcing more details, including start times and ticket info, in coming weeks. Of course, we have to give a shout out to our presenting sponsor for these events, Liscio’s Bakery. ‌ Sticking with the save the date theme, the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association is holding its an-

NEIGHBORHOOD

nual spring flea market on April 22. Neighborhood residents, professional vendors, crafters and artists are all welcome to apply for tables. Vendor spaces will be set up along the prime location on South Broad Street between Snyder Avenue and Jackson Street (street side in front of South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St.). The past five flea markets have featured 60-plus vendors and more than 1,600 shoppers. Event proceeds will benefit the civic association. For more information, including reserving a space, visit lomophilly.org/fleamarket. ‌ The Passyunk Square Civic Association will be holding an election for its board of directors at the May 2 general membership meeting. The first order of business is to present a slate of nominees who will be on the ballot for the May election. Attend the April 4 meeting at the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave., 6:30-7:30 p.m. ‌ Can you say YOWIE? We are of course talking about the wildly popular chocolate brand that will be handing out free candy at East Passyunk Avenue’s annual Easter Egg Hunt taking place at the South Philadelphia Older Adult

D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 take-all match against King in Houston on Sept. 20, 1973. Riggs had already defeated Margaret Court four months earlier. King easily beat Riggs in three straight sets. And a myth was born. Adult women athletes could compete equally with men. In 1992, Jimmy Connors defeated Martina Navratilova in another similarly billed event. That means that if you include Riggs’ victory over Court prior to his match with King, males won two out of those three events. But the myth was false. Worse, it has unreasonably raised the bar for female excellence in sports. I am not making a brief for male superiority. My experience is that overall, females are brighter and more capable than their male counterparts. Since the white sports establishment stopped discriminating against minorities, non-white athletes have risen to dominate most sports. In the same way, once laws were passed against discriminating against females, women have risen to the top of many professions. But physical differences in the adult male and female make a difference in competitive sports. King beating a washedup Riggs didn’t change that fact of life. The self-worth of women athletes should not depend on whether they can compete equally with their male counterparts. That notion is patently unfair to women. I don’t care and neither should you that in all likelihood, Serena Williams couldn’t beat the top male tennis players today. Serena is fantastic in her own right. She is arguably the most dominant athlete — female or male — ever in competitive sports. She shouldn’t have to beat a mediocre male counterpart to prove her worth. Take another example. March Madness. The NCAA Tournament. College men and women compete in separate tournaments. The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team won 107 straight regular season games. They are heavily favored to win the women’s tournament again. No one would expect the UConn women to have to beat whichever team wins the men’s tournament to prove they are a great basketball team. The UConn women deserve adulation and fame. The fact that they are not as big and strong as men is evident.

N southphillyreview.com

A fact of nature. Does it matter? Only if you apply the false conclusion reached when King beat Riggs. To wit that adult females can compete equally with males (pre-puberty competition is a different matter). Any argument to the contrary smacks of chauvinism, I would argue. Recognizing the difference between the physical development in men and women after puberty is reality, not chauvinism. It may be heresy, but I think women’s basketball should not be played on the same court dimensions on which males compete. Why should smaller females have to shoot at a basket 10 feet high? The dunk in basketball is one of the most spectator-appealing plays in the game. Wouldn’t the women’s game, which is already growing in appeal, be even a more appealing sport if women could dunk the ball? If you lower the baskets to eight feet, the dunk would become part of the women’s game. I’m betting that women themselves would get greater enjoyment playing if dunking the ball was part of the game. You can also argue women’s basketball puts a premium on passing and play making and should not have to emulate the men’s game. You can even argue that I’m being inconsistent to call for changing the women’s game so it can mirror the male game. I don’t think lowering the basket would lessen the women’s emphasis on playmaking. I would argue that adding the dunk would enhance the game, and would create more appeal. Changing the dimensions of the court for women is linked to admitting the physical differences between adult men and women. It is time that we admit the difference is a matter of fairness not a subtle form of discrimination. Title IX of the U.S. Education Amendments Act of 1972 had the effect of ensuring the equal treatment of male and female athletics anywhere federal funds are used. Like it is with all attempts at removing discrimination, enforcing Title IX is a continuous battle. But there is no more important piece of legislation for women athletes. Title IX provides that women’s programs are equally funded. The opportunity for female athletes to compete is what is important. Not whether adult females can compete equally with their adult male counterparts. It was nice that King beat Riggs. Made for great television. I was rooting for her to beat that blowhard. But to be fair to women, it’s time to put The Battle of The Sexes in perspective. A>@

FFRUGLQJ WR PDQ\ ´7KH .LQJ DQG ,Âľ LV RQH RI 5RGJHUV DQG +DPPHUVWHLQ¡V Ă€ QHVW ZRUNV With a lush score featuring such beloved classics as “Shall We Dance,â€? “Hello Young Lovers,â€? “Getting to Know Youâ€? and so many more, the award-winning musical plays at the Academy of Music through April 2. Unlike most theater actors who spend years honing their craft, Al-

medilla never had formal drama training. “It’s a thrill to watch him work, although when he’s rehearsing I

leave the room and turn him over to the director, Almedilla said. “I’m certainly not a stage mother. I want him to enjoy the experience as much as I do. When they’re not working, Almedilla says she and her son are off exploring cultures in the cities they visit. “That’s why I’m so anxious to get back to Philadelphia to show him all the important things around the city. It’s a beautiful city, and I do love it there. SPR For tickets, show times or more information, call 215893-3333 or visit kimmelcenter.org. Comment at southphillyreview. com/news/lifestyles.

Mary’s Irish Beef Stew

Meet the farmers

D

espite spring having arrived, the warmer weather remains in limbo. Helping to keep warm in the kitchen while the last few weeks of winter weather pass by, Mary Rodden suggests cooking up her Irish Beef Stew. Yes, this meal can be made any day, not just on St. Patrick’s Day. The Girard Estate resident suggests pairing it with a piece of Italian bread or a roll. It makes for a hearty meal.

Arends and Gil J. Arends, along with Gil’s wife, Manuela Villasmil, have partnered to open Puyero Venezuelan Flavor, 524 S. 4th St. The 22-seat restaurant held its grand opening weekend March 17-19, and introduced customers to signature Latin dishes. “Our grand opening weekend was great, and we had a lot of people come by with a lot of excitement toward us, Simon said. “The whole weekend we probably had about 500 people come by, many who had tried our food before at our soft opening. “There’s definitely a certain ‘street vibe’ to South Street with a lot of foot traffic. It also seems to get very hot on that street in particular in the summer, Simon said. “We think it has a hip vibe, and it reminds us of how things used to be in Venezuela and brings back memories. Specializing in quick-serve arepas — crunchy ground maize patties that contain juicy and exotic stuffings — Puyero Venezuelan Flavor aims at providing the community with traditional Venezuelan street food. In addition, the founders hope to build on South Street’s already “colorful vibe, with their open space featuring bright colors, natural woods and unique lighting. From the authentic fried yucca served

with guasacaca to the patacons, churros, tequeĂąos and richly flavored mandocas, Puyero Venezuelan Flavor’s menu has been designed by Claudia Zamora, a passionate Venezuelan chef. Pairing food with flavorful sauces is one of the key elements here. We are talking green mayo, pink sauce sriracha, chipotle ketchup and papaya hot sauce. “With our focus on street food and tradition, we offer a lot of food that is easy to eat for any meal and at any time of the day, like arepas,â€? Simon said. “Our incorporation of tradition also goes beyond the food we offer and reflects Venezuelan culture. It’s a bright and funny culture, so we tried to incorporate that with funny and witty proverbs on the walls.â€? The first-time restaurant owners hope to use the spot to promote cultural and musical events, as well as host special Venezuelan holiday-themed nights. There are plans to introduce lunch and brunch items along with rotating menu items. “We’re really excited to make the most out of this [venture], and we hope that we can bring something new and different to Philly, while expanding what we already bring to the table,â€? Simon said. The hours of operation range are from 11:30 a.m.-10 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday and Sunday; 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Puyero Venezuelan Flavor is closed on Mondays. ro boxer Ray Robinson gave his first interview when he was 7. A newspaper reporter was working on a story about the staggering upsurge of children living in Philadelphia’s homeless shelters and asked Robinson what he’d do if he ever saw his abusive absentee father again. “If I see him, I’ll kill him, he told the journalist, who published the ominous quote verbatim. It was May 1993 and Robinson had been living for about a year in a single room of the Stenton Family Manor with five of his six older siblings and their single mother, a recovering drug addict. The cozy-sounding name of the place belied reality. At the time, the Philadelphia Inquirer described it and venues of its kind as “large, loud, dingy, crowded and, by their very nature, unhappy institutions - a tough place to raise a kid. And an even tougher place to be one. “One single parent with seven kids, you can imagine what that was like, Robinson told the Northeast Times during a recent lunch at a sports bar near his Bustleton apartment. “It was just about hardship. You’d see people on the corner who had nice clothes and always had money, but that was the easy part. You’d also see how they were always getting stopped by the cops. Robinson, who’s ranked among the top welterweight contenders in the world, acquired much of his toughness at Stenton, but that wasn’t all he got. He also managed to cultivate a profound will to improve his condition without resorting to the self-destructive paths taken by many of his contemporaries. His stiff jab and savvy ring footwork would come a few years later. On Friday night, March 24, he’ll be putting it all on the line - his toughness, talent, No. 13 WBC ranking and aspirations of a title shot - when he headlines the first-ever boxing card at the Fillmore in Fishtown. Robinson will battle former Brazilian champ Claudinei “Volcano Lacerda. Hard Hitting Promotions, a local company founded by South Philly resident Manny Rivera and Florida native Will Ruiz, will stage the card. They are the same promoters who brought boxing to the nearby Sug-

arHouse casino for the first time last year. “I didn’t need to get into a bunch of trouble to get into boxing, Robinson said. “A lot of guys get into it because you’re allowed to hit people. For me, hitting people is cool, but I fell in love with the science part: making someone miss, hit without getting hit, swim without getting wet, playing in the mud and not getting dirty. Robinson laughed as he rattled off those old-school training room adages faster than a Mike Tyson flurry. And in an era when top pros seem to make more money feigning each other at press conferences than throwing down in the ring, Robinson is definitely old school. For starters, there’s his name. Long before the world had ever heard of Floyd Mayweather, Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard or even Muhammad Ali, there was Sugar Ray Robinson, a six-time world champion at welterweight and middleweight in the 1940s and ’50s and the guy whom most experts still call the greatest boxer pound-for-pound of all time. He amassed an astounding 175 wins, 109 by knockout, in a 25-year career that included a 91-bout winning streak from 1943 to ’51. “When I was 8 or 9, somebody asked me about Sugar Ray Robinson and I really didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know about him, the younger Robinson said. “So I found a book and read about him. I would love to train to do half the things that man did. For “The New Ray Robinson (that’s his official ring handle), carrying around such a legendary moniker has been less a source of excessive expectations than one of pride and motivation. As an amateur, people called him Ray “Picture Perfect Robinson, perhaps as a commentary on his unblemished boyish appearance. When he turned pro, he meant to drop the nickname. But as he stepped into the ring on Dec. 8, 2006, for his debut at the Paradise Theater in The Bronx, the announcer blurted out “The New and the ad lib stuck. “Growing up, my coach told me, ‘With a name like that, somebody is always going to want to beat you and you’ve got to never let that happen,’ Robinson said. It rarely has. Robinson cut his teeth as an amateur under trainer Howard “Moses Mosely, who not only taught him the finer points of the sport, but became a muchneeded father figure to complement the

positive influence of his mom, Diane. “I not only had a boxing coach. I had a life coach, Robinson said. He took up the sport at age 8 and logged more than 100 amateur bouts. Under Mosely’s guidance, Robinson earned an invitation to study and train at the US Olympic Education Center in Marquette, Michigan, for his high school and post-graduate years. He earned a spot in the USA Boxing Team that traveled to Russia, Turkey, Italy and elsewhere for head-to-head competitions. For the North Philly native, it was a great opportunity to relieve some of the financial burden on his mom - Team USA covered his room and board and paid him a stipend - but it also forced him to get serious about life a lot quicker than many teens. “I was a young jawn up there. I was living in a college dorm and going to high school, he said. “It showed me that as a human being, I can adjust to anything, but it was difficult because I didn’t have family around. It was just me. I had to grow up, make sure I got my homework done, my projects done and train on top of that. He never reached the Olympics, but earned a technical degree in auto repair and set himself up for a pro career. He returned to Philly in 2006, reunited with Mosley and collected 11 wins in his first 32 months at a pro, including appearances in New York, Connecticut, Atlantic City, Illinois and Northeast Philly’s own National Guard Armory. On the heels of that streak, Robinson’s old-school nature kicked in. Rather than signing to fight an inferior opponent to pad his win-loss record, Robinson took on another rising talent in undefeated Brad Solomon, who would claim a majority decision in their December 2009 bout. Solomon later improved his record to 26-0 before losing a NABF welterweight title fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas 11 months ago. Robinson returned to the ring seven months after his first loss to take on another undefeated foe, Shawn Porter, who out-pointed him in a unanimous 10-round decision. Porter later ran his record to 240-1 and secured a pair of world title shots, losing both. For his part, Robinson took 14 months off, regrouped and reeled off 11 straight wins, including victories at the SugarHouse on North Delaware Avenue in October and January. About three years ago, Mosley retired

from the gym and left his prize pupil in the hands of another of Philly’s elite trainers, Derrick “Bozyâ€? Ennis, a Pine Valley resident who runs “Bozy’s Dungeonâ€? on the second floor of Harrowgate Boxing Club near Venango and Emerald streets. “It is like a dungeon. It’s not one of those super clean gyms. It’s one of those rugged Philly gyms,â€? Robinson said. “I like it that way. There’s no air conditioning and when I’m working out, I want to sweat.â€? Ennis’ stable of fighters also includes Jaron “Bootsyâ€? Ennis, his 19-year-old son who has won his first nine pro welterweight bouts and is considered a future world title contender. “Bozy is one of the best trainers out there, a really smart guy. He’s offensive and defensive put together, a really smart coach,â€? Robinson said. “(Mosley and Ennis) have had hundreds of fighters, I feel lucked up having had both of those guys.â€? Still, Robinson feels a bit frustrated, too. Even after his two losses, he had been ranked by all the major boxing organizations. The WBC had him as high as the No. 4-ranked contender at one point. But he’s been slipping down the list - probably due in part to inactivity following an auto accident. But by now, he also knows that internal politics play a big part in signing a big money fight. And maybe opponents fear his southpaw style. “The closer I get to my dream, the farther away it’s seemed because I’ve been ranked for a while now but haven’t gotten my shot yet,â€? he said. “It’s all about finding that pass code to the bank.â€? In light of his humble beginnings, Robinson has already demonstrated a heart of gold. Outside the ring, he runs his own personal training business and raising his 8-year-old daughter Mya, who along with his girlfriend Jaclyne, provide him with all the inspiration he needs. “From how I grew up, the hard-knock life, from how my mom had seven kids and kept us all together, I feel that’s mentally tough like boxing. It was like training for months before you go to war,â€? he said. “And everything is together for me now, which is why I appreciate it more. Now I know if I need a meal I can eat. I’m doing OK for myself, but I want more.â€? A>@ William Kenny can be reached at 215-354-3031 or wkenny@bsmphilly.com. Follow the Times on Twitter @NETimesOfďŹ cial.

From his historic 2013 season in which Foles threw 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions in leading the Eagles to the playoffs, Foles had become

basically an add-on in a trade to a desperate and lousy football team in St. Louis. It was a shocking plummet, and many figured that would be the last we would ever know of Foles, whom the Eagles selected in the third round of the ’12 draft. So it’s interesting that Foles has returned to the Eagles, signed as an unrestricted free agent on March 11, and he will now be employed in the valuable, but reserve, role behind Carson Wentz at the quarterback position. Doug Pederson will be Foles’ fourth head coach in his six NFL seasons (Andy Reid, Kelly and Jeff Fisher) but the terminology and basic philosophy is the same as he had in ’12 with Reid in Philadelphia and in Kansas City last season, again with Reid as the

head coach. “I think Nick is going to fit in well here, Pederson said. “He’s a big, strong guy with a good arm. He’s a good athlete. He knows how we do things around here and he knows his role with Carson. You need depth in the National Football League. You need two quarterbacks who can win games for you. We have full confidence that Nick can win games for us. The lesson here is that you never say never in the NFL, and those who understand how the game is played get it. Doors are never closed. Teams will do whatever they can to improve. Players like Foles, on top of the world in ’13, passed the same people on the way up as he

did on the way down after his St. Louis experience, where one headline, summing up his time there, read, “Nick Foles’ Career In St. Louis Literally In The Garbage. And now he’s back. A young quarterback who in ’13 was “Mr. 27 And 2 and then the Most Valuable Player in that season’s Pro Bowl has experienced the humbling side of the game, and he’s back now where it all started. Foles is no longer the “Franchise Hope — Wentz is that player now —but Foles has his important job responsibilities here. He’s the next man in line, here with the understanding that anything can happen in the NFL. As Foles knows, anything usually does happen. The Eagles are banking that Foles will be ready to roll if needed and he is called upon again to lead the fortunes of a football team in the rugged and unforgiving world of the NFL.
