ver the course of four days and nights, Neighbors Invested in Childs Elementary (NICE) was very busy. From a Progressive Dinner Party with three stops throughout Newbold on Saturday to Tuesday evening’s Educational Mayoral Debate at G.W. Childs School, 1599 Wharton St., 2013 South Philly Review Difference Maker Megan Rosenbach has been busy. The resident of the 1500 block of South 15th Street hosted the entrÊe course of the Dinner Crawl at her home on Saturday and introduced WHYY/Newsworks senior education writer as the debate moderator on Tuesday in the Childs auditorium.

In circular fashion, NICE is in fact currently raising money to improve the auditorium and bring it up to 2015 standards of technology, and it’s where five mayoral candidates spoke on issues facing Philadelphia’s struggling schools. NICE recently raised funds with volunteer power to create and establish a much-needed library at the K-8 building. Now they’re turning their eye on a slightly larger project – the auditorium. “Our motive is to always be listening and listening to what their needs are, Rosenbach told her packed living room, and celebrated Kim Smith, a resident on the 1200 block of South 15th Street, an alumnus of Childs who’s sent her two children through the school.

Smith also directs assemblies and arts performances with directing and arts education experience. “She runs basically any performance. She is the center of all the school performances that happen there and we want to make sure that the students have space, Rosenbach said. The $11,000 project is reportedly $3,000 under way, half of which came from 2nd District City Council candidate Ori Feibush. “I found out the Councilman’s office is going to be helping us with capital, too, Rosenbach reported. “We don’t have any technology, Smith said, noting that the electric in the room doesn’t reach the stage and their current projector is falling apart and barely mobile.

She explained they have an outside agency that visits the school to teach strings, drums, horns, saxophone and flutes, “all of that, she said. But they get music or art once a week for 45 minutes and, come fall of the ’15-’16 school year, they’ll be choosing one over the other. Smith is running a “Youth Job Ready Workshop for ages 14 to 22 with 2nd District City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson Saturday at the Dixon House, 1920 S. 20th St. Jonathan Fineman, a fifth grade teacher from the 1500 block of South 15th Street, says the Childs principal Eileen Coutts is doing great things, including bringing 250 hours of volunteer services care of Comcast and ASS <713 230/B3 ^OUS ,,

Noting NICE’s library success, Fineman said “We can see the fruit of this already and now we have a wonderful library for the kids to use – it’s exceptional and I’m happy to be a part of it. It’s these friends groups that are keeping neighborhood schools alive and thriving despite plummeting public school funding, budget crises and a tenuous relationship with the School Reform Commission. Dare Henry-Moss, a resident of the 1500 block of South Juniper Street and member of the Friends of Jackson School group, says she and her husband hope to send their 1-year-old son Simon to Andrew Jackson School, 1213 S. 12th St. But that’s not her only reason to get involved. “I’m definitely hoping to send him to Jackson school but even more than that I’m hoping to give support to all the neighborhood schools and watch them be successful, she said. “I really believe the heart of the community is the neighborhood school and the health of the school is the health of the community. IT WAS THESE community organizations supporting schools that sponsored the mayoral debate on Tuesday night: NICE, Friends of Jackson, South Philly Schools Coalition and Public Citizens for Children and Youth to name a few. PCCY helped to prepare questions for the debate, which ranged from charter schools, the SRC, funding formulas, what a mayor can do

for schools in Harrisburg and standardized testing. Jim Kenney, the 23-year City Council vet and longtime South Philadelphian, along with Doug Oliver, Mayor Nutter’s former press secretary, and state Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams seemed most even, knowledgeable and invested in communicating their goals. Milton Street and Nelson Diaz met with little favor, and Lynne Abraham did not attend. All the candidates unanimously rejected Mayor Michael A. Nutter’s proposal to raise property taxes by nine percent and, with the exception of Diaz, said they’d help the District’s request to bridge the funding gap. Perhaps of most interest is the question of charters, and the candidates are mostly mixed. Oliver said “I can see there are a lot of parents that like choice,â€? but said pitting charter versus district schools is not the answer and that charters should “only open in neighborhoods that don’t N 4c[] 4O[WZg 0`O\QV( Sleepy-time Stories 10 a.m. and Minecraft Club 2 p.m. March 28; Toddler Storytime 10 a.m. March 31; Arabic Class for Children 5:307 p.m. April 1. 2437 S. have a quality education choice. “If we could fix charter reimbursement, I would have less of a problem with charters, Kenney added, noting his involvement in Independence Charter. “I am not an enemy of charter schools, I am a fan of public schools. As for the SRC, Diaz says it “has become another patronage mill and the voucher system is a profit-making system. Oliver said it should work like the FDIC or the TSA, saying the SRC should function like a regulator. “I don’t have to worry about which bank I put my money in, and I don’t have to kick the tires before I get on a plane, he explained. When talk of securing funding from the state legislature arose, Street gave one of the most provocative quotes of the night. “There are 75,000 blacks and 25,000 Hispanics [in the District]. white taxpayer dollars to educate some black people, he said. Then he added “wake up and smell the veggie burgers. Diaz also offered one of the most outrageous suggestions of the night - “open bars for millennials 24 hours to collect more of their tax potential. Standardized testing provided some derision, as well. With a newly introduced set of Keystone exams necessary to pass for graduation, the candidates are split on the topic. Kenney called it a “testing-industrial complex. It is a business. Teachers spend more time teaching to the test than worrying about teaching to the students. Oliver called testing “antiquated at best and useless. Diaz and Williams seemed to support it, suggesting they got to where they are today perhaps because of their performances on them. Williams trumped a statistic of “a quarter billion dollars he’s secured in his tenure for the District since ’10 at least a half-dozen times, saying “I perform it. It was my legislation. It’s mine so I take credit for it. And Street wants to “stop the violence so badly that he repeated the mantra at least a dozen times. In closing statements, Kenney said “teachers and principals are not the problem and the “poverty to prison pipeline is something that we want to see stop. Oliver concluded, “I want to give you my word and my promise that I will fall down on my face to make sure that our kids are educated and bridge the gap between this very divided city that we have right now. +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. ichael Norris originally envisioned journeying through life as a journalist, owing to his curiosity for chronicling powerful tales and commending those behind them. Thanks to a vocational variation, the Bella Vista inhabitant ventured into the arts realm, developing an immediate affinity for its focus on inclusivity. Lantern Theater Co. will honor the 50-year-old’s advocacy through Saturday’s A Touch of Tango benefit, giving others a chance to write about him as a Luminary Award designee. “I’m thrilled to have the recognition and even more eager to fraternize with so many others who likewise believe in the vitality of the artistic community, the resident of the 900 block of Fitzwater Street said of his impending prize, which he claims as the vice president of external relations for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. “I treasure my col-

leagues’ efforts to promote sustainability within our field, and I’m thankful they thought of me. Norris and actor/director Peter DeLaurier will collect kudos at the Old City-situated Hotel Monaco Philadelphia, with the former figure looking to land deeper commitments to further art’s scope among Philadelphians. He has acquired such enthusiasm by assisting 425 member organizations, with 10,000 additional backers also fostering the fortification of Philadelphia as a primary player on the creative stage. “I’d say it relates to my perception of myself as a good collaborator, Norris said of his passion for promoting the Alliance, his three-year employer. “There are so many amazing artists among us, so whatever moves we can make, we have to be diligent and tap into as many resources as we can find.

As arts entities still experience financial frustration due to the Great Recession, Norris noted although the integrity within the creative community will never be in jeopardy, a dearth of dollars could cause even more strife. His intense personality never figures to let that occur, with Lantern personnel enamored with his insistence on persistence. “Frankly, it’s no fun solving easy problems, he said with a laugh. “Much of my work involves overcoming challenges to the future of these disciplines that I have come to love. Sometimes that has called for reframing our approach to securing support because in the long run, arts are a wonderful source for understanding ourselves and others. FOR A MAN with such expansive ambition, Norris has humble beginnings, hailing from Chester County’s Atglen. Through crafting characters and penning stories as an elementary school pupil, he developed his compelling calling toward journalism, citing the field’s ability to help him to understand “the sense of capturing life, real stories and interesting people. “I saw it as a way to view so many ex-

periences and catch other perspectives, he said of journalism’s pull, which lured him to Philadelphia, where Temple University inspired inquiries. “In many ways, it’s akin to theatrical observations because we’re looking for those moments when we can feel lasting connections with people. Norris partially channeled his energy through a three-year TV Guide stint, handling fact-checking duties for the behemoth. Leaving for an editing position with a Who’s Who directory, he came to chronicle corporate and government personalities, interacting with development directors who helped to heighten his exposure to and comprehension of the arts and the nonprofit sector. Experiencing a touch of existential angst upon becoming unemployed, he elected to apply his communication and writing skills to the nonprofit world. “I fit right in with that world, Norris said of his “happily accidental line of work, which yielded initial positions with the Walnut Street Theatre and the Arden Theatre Co., the latter a key stop in his formation, as development director and director of external relations posts encouraged him to think about Philadelphia’s entire cul-

the theater community has won a large part of his heart and that mostly anything that encourages fondness for the simultaneous complexity and simplicity of the human condition can appeal to him. Owing to his welcoming and helpful disposition, Lantern overseers made their overture to him in the fall, with the humble yet sensible leader accepting the laurels. Set to give a compact speech, he hopes his words and actions, as well as those of fellow enthusiasts, will have lasting influence. “The future is always on everyone’s mind, Norris said. “The present is just as critical. His own current existence receives further validation through husband Matt Varrato, whom he wed two years ago. With domestic and professional bliss secured, he wishes to have Philadelphians broaden their definitions of happiness, too, and is certain supporting community establishments and performers will intensify their contentment. “Attend the arts, he said. “Be active in the scene. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. ’m thinking of entering the race to become the Republican nominee for president. Oh, I know you Republicans are thinking we do not need no stinkin’ liberal socialists in our party. If Cardella wants to run for president, let him do it as a Democrat. Fair enough, except I can not beat Hillary Clinton because she looks slightly better in a pants suit, and I too have a private e-mail account. Besides, the Republicans are more open to longshot (some may say “crazy) candidates. I certainly qualify as a long shot. And I am at least as crazy as Rick Santorum (just ask my wife). I even have my issue — deport illegal immigrants. I have a plan to get rid of all of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in this beloved country of ours. I am just lusting to go head to head with Jeb Bush and his squishy idea that illegal immigrants should be coddled. When my plan is carried out, no one will be asking for a cheesesteak in any language but English. No longer will you have to hear that recording, “Push one for English and two for Spanish. There will not be a need for the No. 2 button. You want specifics, I’ll give you specifics. I plan to organize a special squad of 10,000 immigration enforcement officers to handle the round-up and deportation of illegal immigrants. Note — Let’s acknowledge right away that Milt Romney’s idea that 11M illegal immigrants would deport themselves is sheer folly. Nobody’s leaving this country where they can have a minimum wage job as a gardener, short order cook or nanny with all the glamour that entails to go back to their own country where “The Bachelor might not be on prime time TV. So yeah, we need a small army of about 10,000 well-trained enforcers. I figure the average number of illegal immigrants in a family is about five. Doing a quick calculation, make that 2.2 million illegal families in the United States. It probably would take two members of our special squad about two hours to round up and escort a family to a deportation center (you want to give it a fancy name — call it an “Outgoing Hospitality Center). Figure on two squad members working a 40 hour week, which means they can round up say, 20 families per week. Divide the 10,000 enforcement squad into 5,000 twoman teams. Stick with me here. That gives you a total of 100,000 families a week over a 22 week period for the entire round-up of

illegals. Note: I know some PC types do not like the word “illegals, but what is the plural of illegal anyway? Efficiency requires that we take an illegal family directly to an airport for deportation. Let me just stop things for a moment here. Nobody, least of all this candidate, is talking about treating these illegal families shabbily. I am proposing that we allow each child to take their favorite “American toy (made in China) back with them. Parents should be allowed to take all their belongings, and their favorite Ricky Martin recording. Favorable references will be provided by their American employers. OK, back to the airport. Air transport will have been pre-chartered and waiting on the runway. I told you this is going to be run efficiently. We are Republicans. Each jet will need to make two roundtrip flights per day to Mexico (if illegals have frequent flyer miles, they may be used to help defray costs). I figure that makes a total of 80 families a day or 400 a week per jet. To accommodate the 100,000 families rounded up each week, we would need 250 jets — here my math starts getting a bit fuzzy, but I will hire an accountant to flesh out the details of my plan. Admittedly costs of rounding up illegals can escalate if some of the families decide not to cooperate in being deported and go into hiding. We also have to figure on another disturbing statistic that I read somewhere that one out of every three deportees is back in the United States within 30 days. But I have got that covered because in addition to rounding up illegals, I’m planning to build a great wall along the 2,000-mile border using the same architecture plans as was used to build the Great Wall of China. We could turn our own great wall into a tourist attraction, charge admission, and sell American-made souvenirs to help defray some of the costs. I have been to the Great Wall of China and saw the Chinese peddlers doing very well selling Chinese souvenirs (most which were posters of Chairman Mao). We will have to get Congress to change the law that right now makes the U.S. born children of illegals American citizens, the problem being that it is currently against the law to deport those kids. We don’t want to be stuck with a bunch of American immigrant kids who need adopting. My rough estimate is that it will take about $100 million to implement my plan to round up and deport all 11 million illegals currently in our country — that’s excluding the cost of building the Great Wall of America. Be assured, there will not be a tax increase to cover my plan. Maybe we can eliminate Medicare to help pay for it. Do not forget the illegals can help pay by contributing their frequent flyers miles. ith Palm and Easter Sundays only days away, reverent residents will frequently reflect on the themes of renewal and resurrection. While souls definitely deserve these blessings, we should never ignore reviving our taste buds. Diane Pecca plays this week’s savior with her recipe for Crustless Ricotta Pie with Lemon. The resident of the 2300 block of South 16th Street, who received this creation from her baking-loving grandmother, noted that kith and kin will take to this immediately, though she contends it is best when one-day old because the ingredients come together and the pie’s texture forms. No matter how many hours it has accumulated, everyone will be declaring “Thanks be to pie. +(*

ore than a year ago, a devastating fire forced Hawthornes, one of South Philly’s most beloved Sunday brunch spots, to close. It re-opened about two months ago, and I quickly placed it on my list. Several weeks ago, during a Sunday snowfall, we were told there was a 45-minute wait for a table, as the place does not take reservations. Flash forward a few weeks, and I came to the conclusion that a half-hour wait would be just fine. Patrons can sip a mug of hot strong dark roast coffee, sit by the enlarged fireplace or do what we did — become acquainted with one of the most distinct beer purveyors in town. The cases are stocked and so are the small shelves and bins that reminded me of perusing a wine store. Thirty minutes later, we were seated and sipping coffee. The menu has a few new additions, including specials, such as chocolate chip pancakes with mint green cream cheese or a corned beef and Swiss cheese omelette. What I most enjoy about Hawthornes is someone can order a hefty turkey sandwich, chicken and waffles or select from a number of egg dishes. I felt like a kid in a candy store and immediately got big eyes. as there were so many options. I decided on a cheddar

cheese omelette ($12). This glorious creation arrived golden and glistening; a true French omelette is difficult to find. The cheese melted inside created a marvelous, gooey and creamy experience. The cooks top the omelettes with tiny bits of chopped tomato and chives. Ovenroasted potatoes are prepared with smoked paprika, which imparted a lovely flavor. They are roasted with small dices of onions and peppers that caramelize in the oven. They just needed a bit of salt. I could not stay another day, to laugh, to love, to work or play. Tasks left undone must stay that way. I found that place at the close of day.

March 10, 2015

If parties have left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Ah yes, these things too I will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow; I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life’s been full, I’ve savored much, good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief, don’t lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up your heart and share with me – God wanted me now, God set me free.

20, said. “There was no way we were going to forget about that in the championship game. Like the sniper, rookie coach Andrea Peterson had been desiring a second encounter with Seton-La Salle. With her first wish fulfilled, she reverently observed her charges obtain her other request, a blemish-free run. “We feel like we’re on top of the world, the revered leader, who flew to Atlanta Tuesday to receive regard as the Naismith Trophy National Coach of the Year, said. “For these young women, this is an unbelievable experience. It’s exactly what we wanted. HAVING RETURNED MOST of last year’s contributors, the Saints, with Peterson succeeding 2011 South Philly Review Difference Maker Letty Santarelli, sought to saddle every foe not only with a comprehensive defeat but also an undeniable understanding of the power of selfless play. As the year unfolded and double-

digit annihilations became commonplace, nobody could deny that an unforgettable year could be theirs. “They’ve always believed in their skills, especially defensively, Peterson, having gained great admiration for their tenacity last year as an assistant coach, said of the belief that quickly helped them to distance themselves from the rest of the parochial pack. “We had incredible chemistry when we began, and that only grew as they realized how special they are. Tearing through the Catholic League, they captured their second-straight league plaque Feb. 23, downing Archbishop Wood 50-45, and third-consecutive City championship Feb. 28, overwhelming Imhotep Charter 71-28. In preparing for the state playoffs, the Saints knew that no matter the opponent or the location, each matchup could test their might as much as their limbs. “Overall, we just wanted to go out and play to reflect how much confidence we’d gained, Aborowa said. “We learned to

apply pressure every time we touched the ball. No loose possessions and no lack of concentration. Trinity and Minersville became the first two victims, with the Saints registering 40- and 35-point victories. In March 13’s quarterfinal, they needed every bit of their tenacity to down Dunmore 64-61, taking their first lead of the contest with three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter thanks to a Timbers three-pointer. A more customary result occurred March 17, with Holy Redeemer absorbing a 77-41 drubbing in which junior guard Kimayah Smalls notched 18 points, senior guard and Georgia Tech University signee Ciani Cryor netted 17, senior sharpshooter and Towson University-ticketed guard Sianni Martin contributed 12 and Aborowa and Timbers added 11. “Heading into the final, the seniors wanted to go out on top, Peterson said of culminating their roles as conquerors. “The fact that we were able to get it done against the team that ended last year’s dream was very fulfilling. With more experience, resolve and passion, this year’s athletes clinched their eternal placement in the Neumann-Goretti annals, with Aborowa feeling especially proud that she could contribute to their maturation and learn from it, too. “This is a family, she said of her immersion into the system. “I’ll think about that for a long time. “We prepped ourselves to be the best, Timbers, who will also attend Towson, added. “We put it all together, and now we have a perfect record as a result. Set to part with a wealth of talent, Peterson looks forward to molding the remaining roster members and enjoying another season as the hunted. “We’re definitely eager, the coach said. “It’s great to look forward, but it’s awesome right now to look back on what we achieved. Nothing can really compare with this. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

hen she begins studies at the University of Texas this fall, Christina Aborowa knows she will often find herself reflecting on her senior campaign at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., and when she does, the theme of her club as a family will hold the most significance. On Friday, she and her extended clan finalized a legendary ledger by throttling Seton-La Salle 79-34 at Hershey’s Giant Center to score the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA title — the first in program history. “We wanted to make a statement and go undefeated, the forward said of the 30-0 squad, which, in addition to acquiring local love, has collected kudos as the nation’s top team. “We had unity and that grew with each game. Aborowa and the Saints mercilessly displayed the depth of their solidarity in the state championship tilt, a rematch of last year’s duel in which Seton-La Salle’s 58-50 triumph cost them a perfect slate. With determination marking every play, the hoops heroes raced to a 43-16 halftime lead. “That is pretty amazing, Aborowa, who deposited 13 points, said of the fact that she and her mates could have emerged victorious even by going scoreless in the second half. “It didn’t matter to me who we played because we were going to go hard versus anybody. “I actually wanted to play them again because I hate losing, and they’re the only ones who had been able to beat us, senior guard A.J. Timbers said. “We knew we needed to get on them early and be dialed in from the tip. Relying on their immense work ethic and athleticism, the Saints, with six AllCatholic selections, including Aborowa and Timbers, exorcised last year’s result with perfect execution, stemming mostly from their family-first mentality. “Throughout the year, we knew we couldn’t play or think selfishly for one minute, Timbers, who led all scorers with

ane Martin possesses many abstract blessings, including confidence, intelligence and patience. On Friday night, the junior guard combined those assets with his concrete physical gifts to propel Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St., to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AAA title, with a 69-67 triumph over Archbishop Carroll High School granting the East Passyunk Crossingbased program its fifth state championship in six seasons. “We all work hard, and I really matured as the year went on, so I wanted to be a big factor, the 6-foot-3 presence said of scoring 26 points at the Hershey-situated Giant Center. “It was important for me to help us to prove that even as the names change, we still have a really good team year in and year out. Despite their institution’s revered reputation, Martin and his mates had cause to come out with extra vigor, as a team dinner the previous night at coach Carl Arrigale’s home included watching a title game preview show in which most prognosticators predicted a Carroll victory. Accustomed to condescending perceptions of their ability to continue as a juggernaut, which intensified with Feb. 23’s 64-59 Catholic League championship game loss to Roman Catholic, the Saints maintained their philosophy that their best will always be excited about matching and eventually exceeding their foes’ top efforts. “Many people saw Carroll as the hot team, Arrigale, the 2015 South Philly Review Readers’ Choice High School/ Youth Coach of the Year honoree, said of the Radnor-based Patriots, fellow members of the Catholic League. “Obviously, it was going to be a great game, and our guys really showed their composure. The resident of the 2900 block of South 15th Street noted his charges entered the state tournament with a “bunker mentality and gladly welcomed the pressure of

dealing with opposing fanbases as much as thwarting Carroll. Seeking to silence their cheers, Arrigale, who registered his 405th win in the title tilt, credited the players’ consistent attention to every facet of the duel with the Patriots, including containing star forward Derrick Jones, who will attend the University of NevadaLas Vegas. Throughout the campaign, star guards Lamarr Kimble and Quade Green, both First-Team All-League selections and the former a future St. Joseph’s University Hawk, often received most of the publicity. In the championship matchup, though, Martin and fellow junior Vaughn Covington showed they can impress the press, too. “I always feel I have to prove myself, Martin, a Second-Team All-Catholic, said of having transitioned from offering a supporting role last year to seizing momentum as a starter this season. “I knew

they would try to converge on Quade, so I saw some openings and took advantage. “We liked being the underdog, Covington, who contributed 17 points and five assists three nights after having paced the Saints with 21 points in their 75-67 semifinal win over Imhotep Charter at Philadelphia University, said. “That just added fuel to the fire. SINCE BECOMING PART of the PIAA pageant in 2009, the Saints have been a behemoth, with Friday’s triumph endowing them with their fifth title in seven tournaments. Carroll nipped them in their inaugural bracket meeting, the school’s lone win over the locals in the last 32 contests. “They’re definitely one of the best teams in the entire state, Arrigale said of the very familiar foe. “To beat someone like that to be able to celebrate with these kids is fantastic.

at southphillyreview.com/blogs.php Following the Catholic League final loss to Roman Catholic, which Covington said left a bad taste in their mouths, the Saints, denied their seventh-straight parochial plaque, claimed the City title by defeating Imhotep 77-74 on a Green buzzer-beating three-pointer. Having annihilated Gettysburg 77-29 and Manheim Central 72-44 to open their state slate, they needed to summon their resolve March 13 to overcome Bishop McDevitt-Harrisburg 76-71 in the quarterfinals, with Green tallying 22 points and Martin complementing him with 19. “We always think positively, so I think after the quarterfinal, we were determined to win it all, the latter sniper mused. Having notched another victory over Imhotep, they knew no matter their institution’s long record of success against Carroll, the Patriots would remain loyal to their strategies and would look to lead the revolution against the Saints’ dominance. They secured a 27-24 halftime lead over Arrigale’s bunch, but a 19-9 third-quarter edge put Neumann-Goretti ahead 43-26 heading into the final frame. “We listened to him all year long, so we knew if we stayed focused, we’d get a win, Covington said of receptivity to Arrigale’s passionate plan to add another jewel to Neumann-Goretti’s crowded crown. The final eight minutes of action proved a thrilling stretch, with Carroll knotting the affair at 48-48 with 4:10 to go. The remaining time became a display of gusto and guts for the Saints, who, thanks to going 21-for-29 from the line for the game while Carroll bricked 15 out of 25 attempts, left Hershey with sweet memories and a different taste in their mouths. “Every year, we want to win three championships, Covington said. “We didn’t do that this year, but we have the momentum going into next season. “We intend to come back strong, Arrigale, whose club, at 29-2, tied Roman for most victories in the city, said. “We have a great nucleus coming back. We’re never going to rest on our laurels. SPR Contact Managing Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

To the Editor: I read with great interest Bill Chenevert’s report on the tapestry art project recently completed at the Southwark School (“Silkscreening selfies, March 19) collaboration with the Fabric Workshop and partly funded by the Coby Foundation, a New York-based organization that supports textile and needlework projects for nonprofits like schools. What was particularly impressive was the comment by Southwark art teacher Aaron Kalinay about how art transcends language. This is especially valuable in

a diverse school like Southwark, where many languages are spoken. Art, as Kalinay attests, is a universal language similar to mathematics. With budget cuts depriving schools of so many resources, this was indeed a great opportunity for teaching many skills through art to children from different backgrounds. Using natural dyes to color their prints, for example, was both a science and a social studies lesson. I was also happy to read how the perspectives of students from different cultures are incorporated into the arts program at Southwark, and how this particular project was a blend of many talents.

Kudos to the art students at Southwark and their innovative teacher, Mr. Kalinay, for producing this splendid portrait tapestry. Well done. 5Z]`WO 1 3\R`Sa A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

BVWa QOZZa T]` O ^O`ORS An open letter to Mayor Michael Nuttter: The Ss. Neumann-Goretti boys’ and girls’ basketball teams have won [Pennsyl-

vania Interscholastic Athletic Association] state championships. In addition these two teams have become a dynasty. The school band, the students, parents and the South Philly community came out for this. The Neumann-Gorettti girls were [ranked as] the best basketball team in the country. If the City can give the Taney Dragons a parade for going to the Little League World Series but not winning it, then they can give a parade for a true champion. 8]S 1W`SZZZO A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters

“It’s big of her to forgive him. If it was me, I wouldn’t have, but that’s good for her to be the bigger person. Demetrius Holloway, West Philadelphia

The 2015 South Philly Review Rising Stars issue will hit doorsteps June 4. It means the nomination process will be getting under way the first week of April. Teachers, guidance counselors and other school administrators will need to fill out a questionaire for a student to be considered. The pupil must reside in or attend a South Philadelphia school. Complete details will come in next week’s issue. -By Bill Gelman “It was way out of line to say that about a kid. It shows her character to forgive him. t 8:46 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a radio call for theft from automobiles in the area of the 700 block of South Front Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Upon arrival, they discovered front driver-side windows from five Hondas and one Acura broken, with the vehicles’ air bags missing. Canvassing the environs, they found similar scenes on the 300 block of Monroe Street, with a damaged Acura and Honda; the 400 block of Fitzwater Street, with seven compromised Hondas; the 700 block of Christian Street, with three altered Hondas; and the 300 block of Catharine Street, where an Acura and a Honda swelled the count to 20 automobiles. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/ forms.

8cabWQS T]` O XcdS\WZS Police arrested a Point Breeze man for supposedly stealing a minor’s phone. As first reported in the March 19 South Philly Review as “Taking from a child, a boy and his brother were in Stephen’s Barber Shop, 1267 Point Breeze Ave., at 5:30 p.m. March 10 when an unknown figure grabbed his cell phone and bolted out of the establishment. The youth gave chase on foot, catching up with him at 20th and Wharton streets. The offender turned around to the victim and, pointing a black gun at him, threatened “I will shoot you, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Singletary, the 33-yearold head of Congregation Baptist Church, 2500 Wharton St., could not convince the magistrate to offer clemency, as Stengel, according to published reports, cited the individual’s difficulties in paying traffic tickets and child support as proof of perpetual oversight.

’m lucky. Why? “Because I get to come here, Ronoldo, a 9-yearold fourth grader living on the 700 block of Morris Street, said. He was easily one of the most enthusiastic and inquisitive students at Mighty Writers El Futuro, 1025 S. Ninth St., on Tuesday afternoon when SPR paid the brand new bilingual learning hub in Bella Vista a visit. He and his sister, Karina, a 10-year-old fifth grader, go to Christopher Columbus Charter School, 1242 S. 13th St. From 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays and for a couple hours on Saturdays, Ronoldo and Karina will visit Laura Karabell, El Futuro’s program director, to get help with homework, read books, play games and write from assignments, in two languages. “A week from yesterday was our first day open, Karabell said of the March 16 grand opening. “It’s been building. I think we had seven kids the first day, and now we’re at 13. We have four second-graders in this class. I’m getting a new sixth-grader today. We’re just trying to get as many people in as possible. The Mighty Writers program, with a center in West Philly and one at 1501 Christian St., focuses on 7- to 17-yearolds and offers its programming for free. “Our mission is to teach Philadelphia kids to think and write with clarity so they can achieve success at school, at work and in life, is how the online mission statement reads. “We offer daily afterschool academics, long- and short-term writing classes night and weekends, teen scholar programs, mentorships, SAT Prep courses and college essay writing classes. Ronoldo pulled out a copy of “The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley. “We’re reading this aloud right now it’s really cool, he said. Like the mission statement says, Karabell says they offer a mix of programming

every afternoon to meet the kids in the middle. “We want them to have a place that they can come and feel safe and loved and feel motivated and feel comfortable to share what they’ve written, which can be very hard. [There is] a mixture of homework help, which we do in the beginning, snack, read aloud and that kind of thing, Karabell explained. The organization has sectioned off a front section with tables and chairs, a white board, full bookshelves and supplies, and then there’s a sizable section perfect for running around and games. On Tuesday afternoon they were just finishing up a treasure hunt. “We want kids to write with clarity and think with clarity so they can make smart decisions which will help them to be successful. It can be hard to teach students how to think but it can be a little easier teaching them how to write and those are very correlated, Karabell, who taught elementary and middle school Spanish at the Montgomery School in Chester County, noted. Plus there’s “space for kids to move around and get their yah-yahs out if they have to - after school it’s important for them to play a game and run. They’ve been sitting a lot.

nounce that “our doors are open at our first bilingual writing center for kids. Noting support from parents, kids and other community organizations, he wrote “thanks to you, our believers, we were able to create this Mighty writing space for Latino kids from the city’s Italian Market neighborhood in warp speed. “We’d been working with this community for a couple years now on Saturdays at 15th and Christian. We began about three years ago looking for funding, Whitaker explained. “We’re not just helicoptering in. He noted that for many of the students at El Futuro, they are the ones who’ve picked up English as a second language, not their parents. “I think the kids pick it up through television, through the culture, through the school. When you’re young you can learn that stuff - when you’re an adult it’s a whole different battle, Whitaker added. He also suggested that, despite a history of Latino cultures existing in the shadows, things are changing and for the better. “We’re trying to reach the kids we need most. The resources are scarce. I think this community, in large part, has been in the shadows for a long time. I think that’s starting to change as the numbers get bigger, and I like to think that feelings change IN MIGHTY WRITERS executive director about all that stuff, he said. “Over time in South Philly, we’ve seen Tim Whitaker’s e-mail, titled “Mightiness Goes Bilingual, he was proud to an- more children of immigrants participat-

ing in our programs, Rachel Loeper, Mighty Writers’ education director, said.. “There’s a huge growing Mexican population in South Philadelphia, and we wanted to go right where they are. Loeper also explained that a fortuitous connection in the community has been with Puentes de Salud based out of Southwark School, 1835 S. Ninth St. And Nora Litz, a Mexican artist and Mighty Writers board member, helped build a marriage between the two organizations that’s fed the momentum for El Futuro. “We’ve kind of worked together to have a summer camp at Southwark and at Mighty Writers for the past two years. Those made us really start looking to start building relationships in the community to take it to the next level, Loeper said. She added that students come in at all ranges of skill, from kids who desperately need help with schoolwork to young writers who identify as poets and journalists. “We can do that enrichment piece with them, she explained. Noting the difference between Mighty Writers as a day care and an academic program, Whitaker said “this is not a drop-off service or a babysitting service. It’s kind of like a clubhouse feeling, like a warm feeling. Echoing that turbo speed comment before, he says the El Futuro space will be humming in no time. “You have to sort of crawl before you can go running down the street, but we like to move quickly. By summer, we should be pretty busy. As for those kids? They are pumped. Nayeli, a seven-year-old at Andrew Jackson School, 1213 S. 12th St., was all smiles and eager to say hello. She was palling around with Jordi, a 10-year-old fifth grader and Pedro, a 9-year-old third grader, who go to George W. Nebinger School, 601 Carpenter St. Alexis, a 10-year-old fifth grader at Center City’s Independence Charter was nearby. Ronoldo’s buddy Victor, a 10-year-old fourth grader with him at Columbus said “we’re in the same grade and our teachers talk to each other a lot. “Oh my God, they’re so excited, Karabell said. “This is a direct quote, on Monday [a Mighty Writer] said ‘we learn here AND it’s fun! And I said ‘Yes, yes exactly! +(* Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.
