Congrats to Vlad!

n my mailbox this morning, I found a recording that claims to be a conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. Please understand that I have not been able to independently confirm the authenticity of this recording. Fox News has already labeled it “fake.” You, dear reader, may judge for yourself. The transcript: TRUMP: Hello, Vlad? PUTIN: Da. TRUMP: Congratulations, bro! Your fourth freakin’ term as president. You did it! PUTIN: Da. TRUMP: You won 76 percent of the vote? OK, I guess. But, Vlad, be real. Without the deep state against me - plus CNN, the Times, the Washington Post, I get 90 percent. Easy. PUTIN: (silence). TRUMP: I mean you’ve got Pravda and Izvestia. All I’ve got is Fox News and sometimes even Hannity needs to criticize me to make it look good. You know, “fair and balanced” and all that crap. PUTIN: (chewing). TRUMP: Sometimes I’m forced to make s—t up. Do you ever have to make s—t up? PUTIN (flossing his teeth). TRUMP: Neither one of us is as lucky as Xi (columnist’s note - president of China See CARDELLA, page 9>>

Doing the Easter Sunday hop to South Street Easter Promenade remains long-standing holiday tradition for local family By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

“W

hat are we doing for Easter?” When the holiday arrives on Sunday, April 1, you will not hear any member of the Dilks family

ask the question. There is no reason to since everyone knows about the standing tradition in place – one that dates back to the time when Marlo Dilks was 3 or 4 years old. The Easter Promenade on South Street – Philadelphia’s largest Easter celebration that is now in its 87th year, is where they’ll be along with hundreds of other people of all ages. There will be an Easter Bunny sighting, too.

RoseRita DePiano, her aunt, started taking Dilks some 30-plus years ago when the event was held on Rittenhouse Square. “It’s a nice thing to do after church. We’ve been doing it forever,” DePiano said. “It continued from there and never stopped.” Whether it has taken place on Rittenhouse See PROMENADE, page 4>>

best? In South Philly, the best way to settle the great gravy debate is to hold a friendly competition, more specifically the Fourth Annual Italian Red Gravy Cook-Off hosted by the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association. Do you think your recipe has what it takes to win the judges’ choice or crowd favorite honors? Well, amateur chefs, here’s your chance to showcase your gravy in a blind-tasting event. Competitors will need to prepare approximately two gallons of homemade sauce, vegetarian, seafood, red meat or other variety. The East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association will provide pre-cooked pasta in chafing dishes on the day of the event. All red gravy submissions will be served in a four-ounce tasting cup to attendees and judges. Contestants receive two complimentary tickets to the event. For

Speaking of food, The East Passyunk Business Improvement District is gearing up for its annual spring bash and street festival – Flavors on the Avenue – set for Sunday, April 29. PROMENADE: 87-year-old event has grown along with the family <<Continued from page 1 Square, at The Gallery in Center City or on South Street, the family – now some 20 members strong – is keeping the Easter Sunday routine going. They’ve even showed up on days when those April showers tried to put a damper on things. Some years it included checking out the petting zoo at The Shambles. Marlo and Jason Dilks and their six daughters are looking forward to once again meeting up with the family. “We love it. It has extended to my mother-in-law and sister-in-law, and they live in New Jersey,” Dilks said. “The kids love it. They love it even more if they win.” She is referring to the fashion part of the day in which individuals, families and even pets are crowned Best Dressed, Best South Street Razzle Dazzle and Best Easter Bonnet. In previous years, Fergie, the family dog, earned doggie bragging rights after sporting his Easter Sunday tutu. Nadia, 17, their oldest daughter, has walked away with several Best Dressed awards over the years. Capri, 7, Avana, 6, Chiara, 5, and twins Luciana and Giorgia, 19 months, have joined the tradition along with extended family members. DePiano’s daughter, Chirose DePiano-Maryk, 22, is making the trip down from Penn State University. Marlo’s mother, Mary Fioravanti, lends a helping hand with the clothing as a result of being the owners of a Star is Born, 1821 E.

Passyunk Ave., with DePiano. “She either brings us dresses or we go to her store,” Dilks, who resides in Queen Village, said. Sometimes the decision involves whether to wear a bow, hat or bonnet. Come Sunday morning, the family, dressed up in their Easter Sunday best, will walk to East Passyunk Avenue and Christian Street to meet up with the rest

of the family on the way to services at St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi Church, 712 Montrose St. Then, it’s off to South Street where all the fun begins. Spending Easter Sunday as a family is so important to Marlo and Jason Dilks, the owners of SliCE, 1180 S. 10th St., and P’unk Burger, 1823 E. Passyunk Ave., that they shut down the restaurants for the holiday.

“It’s Easter Sunday, so it’s just important in general,” Marlo Dilks said. “It’s a fun day.” After taking in all of the festivities, the family will likely grab a table at one of the South Street restaurants for an Easter Sunday brunch. Then it’s back to the house to continue the all-day eating. Easter Sunday is one of the rare days in which pizza and burgers are not on the

menu. Looking back, DePiano said she never knew, more than three decades ago, she would still be going to the Easter Promenade with the much larger family. “It’s unbelievable that we are still going every year,” she said. “Every time we think about doing something else we end up coming here.”

Civic groups rallying local efforts for citywide cleanup April 7 event sponsored by the Philadelphia Streets Department aims to beautify neighborhoods By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

n honor of Philadelphia’s citywide spring cleanup event, various civic associations in South Philadelphia are holding events on April 7, the day of the event, to do their part to keep their neighborhoods clean. The spring cleanup event is put on by the Philadelphia Streets Department. Lower Moyamensing Civic Association is holding an event at 10 a.m. at the Francis Scott Key School, where residents and students will be distributed supplies such as brooms, shovels, bags and buckets to help cleanup the surrounding neighborhood. Volunteers will reconvene at the school at 12:30 where snacks and pizza will be fed to the volunteers. Additionally, members of the civic association will present new art display cabinets to the school’s

art teacher at the end of the event. The school is located at the corner of 8th and Wolf. “People get to keep their brooms and the gloves,” said Patti Tahan, Lower Moyamensing’s president, said of the supplies, which was given to the organization by the city. “We even give out bags so that they can continue to clean up every week.” Tahan said that approximately 70 volunteers – including students from Francis Scott Key – showed up to the event last year. “So I’m hoping that we have 85 this year,” she said. Brandy Bones, the vice president and treasurer of the Bella Vista Neighbors Association, said her civic association also plans to distribute supplies such as brooms, shovels, bags and gloves to residents who want to clean up. According to Bones, some use the

supplies to clean up their block, and others will be assigned a “hightraffic area” in the neighborhood to clean up. Representatives from the organization will be distributing the supplies from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Palumbo Recreation Center at the corner of 10th and Fitzwater streets. “We represent the entire neighborhood,” said Bones. “Litter is one of the biggest concerns in the neighborhood. We have good relationships with Palumbo and the city agencies and departments. It’s a natural fit for the neighbors association.”

Bones said the organization typically gets about 40 to 50 people to come to the event each year. Monica Montiel, Passyunk Square Civic Association’s Clean Streets Committee chairperson, said her organization, which she also sits on the board of, is planning to also distribute supplies

to help clean up its neighborhood. Last year, according to Montiel, the city equipped the civic association with brooms, rakes, shovels, and paint – in case anybody wanted to paint the fire hydrants – so it can distribute them among its cleanup day volunteers. Montiel expects the same supplies to be given out. “Everybody has to take part in making their community a nicer place to live,” she said. “South Philly is notorious for having trash everywhere and every little bit

helps.” Registration isn’t necessary for any of the events; residents can simply show up. However, for more information on the city’s annual cleanup day event, visit www.philadelphiastreets. com/philly-spring-cleanup.

Duke has been such a love with his foster daddy. He follows him around to watch his every move, and just can’t get close enough. Duke loves to run around and play with his ball, but sleeps like a log. He rarely barks, but makes up for the silence with his snoring. Duke seems to be submissive with super playful pups! Some may notice his face on the popular South Philly mural while traveling on Broad Street. The entertainer we are talking about is of course none other than James Darren, who played Moondoogie in the popular “Gidget” movies during the late 1950s and early 1960s. He is pictured with actress Sandra Dee, who played the title role in the original film.

The lights are on and shining bright at Palumbo As school’s second musical closes, students, teachers excited about being part of future acts By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

magine trying to start a high school theater program with one key component missing – lighting. Prior to putting on its first spring production last year, it was a scenario the teachers and students at The Academy at Palumbo faced. “We work in a very old building with a very classic old-school auditorium,” Anissa Weinraub, the school’s artistic director, said. “For last year’s musical we didn’t have lights until a few weeks before the production.” “Little Shop of Horrors” was the first show the students put on at that old building located on the 1100 block of Catharine Street. Over the weekend, many of those same students wrapped another Palumbo show, “Urinetown,” with the actors, pit band, crew and audio/lights technicians all being current students. The program is growing to the point in which students are making a lasting impression outside of the school auditorium. Junior Macksud Yillah, who played Bobby Strong, one of the lead roles in “Urinetown” recently won regionals in the National Shakespeare Competition, earning him a trip to the National Shakespeare Festival in New York City where he will perform at the Lincoln Center. The majority of students in the Philadelphia regional competition were from private schools or the surrounding suburbs. “It is a major victory to have someone from the Philadelphia public schools represent our region,” Weinraub said. Yillah is excited about the opportunity. “This is a new experience for me. Something I’m really looking forward to. It will be nice to see other kids from all over the country,” he said. “I’m excited to be able to perform at Lincoln Center, in front of a large audience.” While his early success may make him seem like a child prodigy, he has only been acting for the past two years. “I’m a much stronger performer now, and working with people has got-

Some like Yillah handled the leading role while others like freshman Lola Hodgins, gained a different perspective on theater. “I’ve been in shows before, but I’ve never been in one so unique. Doing a satire is so much fun,” she said. Sophomore Keyon Mosley was the lead pianist. “Playing music for this show is fun and rigorous. It shows the mission of Palumbo in a different light - not just in the classroom, but in the arts,” he said. Many of the advanced theater stu-

dents are currently working on creating an original musical through the school’s partnership with the Wilma Theater. The group will be performing an original show at the Wilma in early May. Many of the same students from this week’s musical are part of this special project. The students in theater class are working with original artists from the Wilma. “The really cool thing about Philadelphia is that it’s a real thriving center of diversified theater,” Weinraub said. Like a stage production, the Palumbo team took several steps to get the program up and running, including a $14,000 Teacher-Leader Collaborative Grant it received last year. Jim Jordan, music director, Monica Wilbur, vocal

director, Alison Marzouli, choreographer and art department, Christian Pedone, set designer, and Kristen Arrivello, art department, are other staff members who have helped get the program up and running. Principal Kiana Thompson also continues to provide support. Besides applause-worthy performances, Weinraub is hoping each of her students uses this experience as his or her opening act as the foundation to future success. “I hope that they are able to feel that their voice matters,” she said. “Express who they are, what they believe and do so with confidence.” Senior Nguyen Dang, who played the lead role of Officer Lockstock in

the recent play, is one of those students who used to be shy, but will soon be graduating with a much more confident outlook on life. “Like teachers have said, they never had heard me say a word - they didn’t even know the sound of my voice. And now, stepping out of my comfort zone has helped me find my passion and my voice,” Dang said. E’lexis Morgan, a senior stage manager, has enjoyed being part of the growth since his freshman year. “I’ve watched this theater department grow from the ground up since I was a freshman. And, through my work here, I’ve grown up at the same time,” Morgan said.

vorite color, right (chuckling). I wear the top coat open. If I button up, I feel claustrophobic. But you? You ride horses and stuff. You keep fit. Bet you never ate a Big Mac? Whaddya eat? Salmon? I like smoked salmon, but it has to be on a New York water bagel with a big shmear of cream cheese. The Jews really know how to eat. Did I ever tell you, my son-in-law, Jared, is Jewish? And I’m supposed to be anti-Semitic? PUTIN (silence). TRUMP: I hope I didn’t offend you. Vlad, you’re not Jewish, are you? PUTIN: Nyet. Mexican. TRUMP: (laughing) A sense of humor. Question. I understand you guys have an Iron Curtain. Is it better than a wall? PUTIN: Da. TRUMP: Is an Iron Curtain cheaper than a wall, I wonder? Let Melania pick out the color scheme. (chuckling). I’m kidding. Maybe the best kidder you ever met. Hey, you didn’t poison that guy in Britain, did you? PUTIN: Nyet! TRUMP: Sorry! Probably just Theresa May getting emotional. Maybe that time of the month … Women! So, about the sanctions we imposed. Little stuff — your borscht, vodka — I understand it’s not as good as Grey Goose anyway — although I never touch the stuff myself…Remember, Vlad, no collusion. Admiration, yes, but no collusion. Hey, don’t believe that crap about me paying off a porn — PUTIN: (Click. Dial tone). TRUMP: Vlad?

PUTIN: ( coughs). TRUMP: With my base, I could have this job for life. But between you and me — and whoever’s listening in (laughs) … the White House is a s—t hole. Not exactly Mar-a-Lago, if you know what I mean? Melania’s tried her best to make it look decent, but the freakin’ Lincoln bedroom looks as if Lincoln actually slept there last night. How the hell did Clinton let big contributors sleep in there? There’s a painting of Mary Todd Lincoln above the four poster (chuckling). Kidding. PUTIN: (silent). TRUMP: So, when you coming to Mar-a-Lago? I know you play a little golf, right? PUTIN: Da. TRUMP: There are some people say I invented the game. And don’t tell me you beat Obama. Even Angela Merkel could beat Obama at golf. Me — I never lost a match — and no, I didn’t cheat. I don’t keep my own score. Don Junior keeps my scorecard. When he’s not shooting lions. And that CNN story about me moving the ball closer to the pin? There was a helluva breeze blowing that day. I never touched the ball myself. PUTIN: (seems to be snoring). TRUMP: (ignoring the snores) You’ll like the chocolate cake at Mar-a-Lago. Best chocolate cake in the world. Xi loved it. Xi doesn’t play golf, though. Says he hates the game. I didn’t know what the hell to do with him when he visited. I think he hates the game because the Japanese guy plays it. What’s his face? PUTIN: (silence). TRUMP: You know I had to use an alias to get your secretary to put my call through today. Yeah, I told her I was “John Miller.” Got a million aliases. You have an alias? PUTIN: (silence). TRUMP: I got one for you. How about Dracula? See, Vlad the Impaler was the real Dracula. Get it? At least that’s what some people say. PUTIN: (silence). TRUMP: I use the alias — if you were wondering — in case the FBI and CIA is listening in. Can you imagine? My own FBI and CIA spying on me? They’re all Obama spies. I heard about it on “Fox and Friends.” You ever have the KGB or whatever you call it nowadays, spying on you? That crap can hurt your ratings! But nobody spies on Vlad, right? You were KGB, weren’t you? I think I heard that in one of those boring intelligence briefings. Hey, I can’t believe you didn’t use the campaign slogan I came up with “Vote for Vladimir or things will go bad, I fear!” PUTIN: (Yawn) Mmmm. TRUMP: Strong, silent type, eh? I envy you. Ex-cop making bid to fight for South Philly at statehouse By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

N

NICHOLAS DiDONATO JR. Security chief at Philly Trans busing firm running for 184th statehouse district.

icholas DiDonato Jr., Democratic candidate for Pennsylvania’s 184th House District, bills himself as an “everyday, hard-working guy.” “I currently work three jobs,” DiDonato, the former Philly cop and DA detective, told SPR in a phone interview. “I do that because I really feel that I have the energy to do it. So I take that to this spectrum in trying to run for a state representative seat because I know my work ethic is there and my passion is there.” Currently, DiDonato is the security director for Philly Trans, a large bus company based in Philly. He also works as an overnight security guard for the Philadelphia Museum of Art and delivers packages as a courier on the weekends. “I feel my candidacy is unique and totally different than any other candidate that’s ever ran in history because I’m an everyday working guy. I go to work every day, I’m not a politician – I don’t ever want to be a politician. I’m not tied to any political groups. This is a total grassroots campaign, and if I win this race I’m going to win this race because of the people. I’m beholden to nobody but the people.”

DiDonato goes out of his way to note he doesn’t feel any of the other candidates can say that they aren’t beholden to “third-party interests.” “Elizabeth Fiedler – I’ve met her – wonderful lady, very nice lady. But I don’t think she has enough tenure to represent our district with her short term tenure here,” he said. “Tom Wyatt, he’s a corporate lawyer...I wonder if corporate’s going to come first before the people. Jonathan Rowan, another nice guy, however, he’s worked for Vince Fumo, he now works for Larry Farnese. I don’t know what will be different from the Bill Keller regime as what’s happening in the Larry Farnese/ Jonathan Rowan regime. I know that I will fight for the people and fight hard for the people.” When talking about his admiration for South Philly, DiDonato said he loved “the strong neighborhoods that we once had.” What’s changed in DiDonato’s view? “I love the small business, the neighborly affection in the neighborhoods. But we have lost some of that, and I really feel that under the previous state representative [Bill Keller] who was there for 24 years, we kind of got complacent. Only certain parts of the district were getting service. I feel if I’m elected state representative I will service the entire district. I want to be able to give everybody representation throughout

the entire district.” DiDonato, a Democrat, supported Republican Beth Grossman in the city’s district attorney race last year, making him unique among the 184th district’s candidates. “You need to look at the candidate, not so much the party labels,” he said. “I believe our city has become a lopsided, one-party system. I don’t think that’s good for anybody. I don’t think that’s good for the Democratic Party, I don’t think that’s good for the Republican Party.” On a local level, DiDonato is a staunch supporter of keeping neighborhoods clean, improving parking and is not a supporter of safe-injection sites. “We need to help these people, but I don’t believe that public injection sites are the answer,” said DiDonato, who did say there should be increased funding for clinics for those addicted to drugs. “I would like to see more funding to educate people who do in the community look down on these people because they are human beings and everybody deserves the chance – compassion. These people are – we need to try to help them. We need to try to educate people and we also need to have clinics to get them the help. If they’re not able to afford the help, then try to find a parttime funding to be able to get them the help that they need and try to tackle this See DiDONATO, page 12>>

City eyes update for FDR Park grounds, facilities By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

hiladelphia’s Fairmount Park Conservancy, in tandem with the city’s parks and recreation department, announced plans to launch a master plan for South Philly’s FDR Park, aiming to repair much of the infrastructure that has worn out after years of heavy use. “There’s certain areas like the older tennis courts that need some attention,” said Fairmount Park Conservancy’s executive director Jamie Gauthier. “There are parts of the golf course that need to be freshened up, and parts of the actual architecture or the actual built environment that needs to be taken a look at.” FDR Park, which is 350 acres in size, is home to man-made lakes, a golf course, the American Swedish Historical Museum, and a range of recreation facilities including tennis courts, ball fields and a skate park. Gauthier said she will find ways to get the community involved in the planning process. Community meetings have yet to be announced, but Gauthier said residents and stakeholders can plan to expect the first meetings See FDR PARK, page 13>>

DiDONATO: Running for 184th statehouse district

<<Continued from page 10 opioid epidemic.” Speaking of health, DiDonato is also in favor of finding ways to implement universal health care. “I would like to find ways to make premiums affordable for all, working towards universal health care for all, but that’s going to take time,” he said. “What we should do is we should form a committee in Harrisburg. We should get all the health-care providers in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to sit down with and negotiate a contract. We need to sit down with them, and we need to talk, and we need to make progress [with] health-care providers, and try to find a solution together so that health care is more affordable.” DiDonato also criticized Mayor Jim Kenney, saying he hasn’t done enough to support Philadelphians outside of Center City. “I feel as though the current administration in City Hall caters more towards Center City than other parts of the city,” DiDonato said. “He is from South Philadelphia, but I believe he’s forgotten South Philadelphia.” The primary for the 184th statehouse district will be held May 15.

Chilly Easter egg hunt gets warm reception

Despite having to wear winter coats and hats, the weather outside was not enough to keep families home for the annual East Passyunk Avenue Easter Egg Hunt. Besides looking for eggs outside of the South Philadelphia Older Adult Center, 1430 E. Passyunk Ave., youngsters enjoyed arts and crafts and a meet and greet with the Easter Bunny.

FDR PARK: City eyes upgrades <<Continued from page 10 some time in June. The organizations involved in the planning will also utilize internet surveys and neighborhood surveys to gather opinions. Residents and stakeholders are also looking to place a booth somewhere in the park where residents can provide input on what they’d like to see. “We’re going to be doing a really extensive look at what needs to be done,” Gauthier added. When asked what specific changes South Philadelphians can expect to see in the park, Gauthier said she wanted to wait until she got input from residents, and she didn’t want to speculate. “I don’t want it to seem like there are any preconceived notions,” she said. “We’re looking at land use and programming at the park and how they can be reflective of the broad array of constituents’ desires.” However, she did call the park an “ecological asset,” and said one of its primary functions – aside from providing an area of recreation – was to absorb water, which improves the city’s ecological footprint. Todd Pride, the president of Friends of FDR Park, said the implementation of a dog park could be an idea for the master plan, which is something he’s heard from residents in the past. “[However], I think the biggest thing that we’re looking for out of the master plan is really the improvements of where the park has had a tremendous wear and tear, like the drive,” he said. “It’s mostly looking to improve or replace areas of the park that have wear and tear.” The planning phase of the master plan is ex-

pected to cost $200,000. A third of the funds comes from parking concessions charged during sporting events, another third comes from a grant from the William Penn Foundation, and the last third will come from Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s office. “FDR Park is a jewel for South Philadelphia communities and a destination for residents across the city, and we want to keep it that way!” said Johnson in a statement. “This planning process is an important next step forward. I’m a strong believer and advocate for revitalizing our parks and recreation projects to improve quality of life for our city, so I’m happy to be supportive.” Gauthier expects the planning process to last approximately nine months. “We’ll be doing engagement through the early summer and throughout the summer and working with stakeholders and residents on what that plan will actually look like,” she said. “We absolutely want, as the friends, to have as much input from the immediate residential community as well as the business community that uses the park,” said Pride. “Parks & Recreation is pleased to have Fairmount Park Conservancy’s support in dedicating time and energy to rethinking current demands on FDR Park and mapping a vision for its next century,” said Philadelphia’s parks and recreation commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell. For more information about FDR Park’s master plan and how to get involved, visit myphillypark. org/what-we-do/capital-projects/ and click on “FDR Park Master Plan.”

We’re looking for ‘Rising Stars’

I

t’s that time of year in which high school seniors are finalizing college decisions. Younger students are likely proud of the strides they have made in the classroom from September to now. Others may have faced personal hardships that presented unexpected challenges in and out of the classroom. No matter what the story is, each of these students is very deserving of recognition. Teachers, counselors and administrators, do you have a Rising Star in your classroom? If yes, it’s time to share the stories of these first graders through high school seniors you feel are worthy of Rising Star consideration. The South Philly Review and Grays Ferry-based Young Chances Foundation are once again teaming up to recognize your standout candidates. The only requirement is the student must reside in South Philly or attend a South Philly school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 Zip Codes. Parents and guardians, we know you believe your child is well deserving of being included on this list, but nominations need to come from the school. Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are

both strong points, but not the only criteria being taken into consideration. We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. If you have a Rising Star who fits the bill, send us a nomination letter, 250 to 350 words, describing what makes your candidate stand out from the pack. What is the reason(s) for nominating this student? What academic achievements has this student achieved during the 2017-18 school year? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? These are just a few questions meant to help get the conversation started. All of the nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee, with the winners appearing in the special June 6 Rising Stars edition. Please submit nominations by Tuesday, April 30. Nominations can be submitted via email, news@ southphillyreview.com, or mail, South Philly Review, attention Bill Gelman, 2 Executive Campus, Suite 400, Cherry Hill, NJ 08002.

Saints 4-peat: F

Neumann-Goretti girls basketball closes out another season as champs

By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

our-for-four. In a baseball or softball game, the numbers are as good as it gets for a hitter. The number is equally as impressive when it’s referring to a head coach’s record in state tournament championship games. On Monday night, Ss. Neumann-Goretti head girls basketball coach Andrea Peterson made a return trip to Hershey for the PIAA Class 3A championship game. Like the three previous seasons, the Saints prevailed with a 63-46 victory over Bishop Canevin – the same school they defeated for the 2017 crown – at the Giant Center. The Saints post-game celebration included the four-finger salute, signifying a championship four-peat. “It’s a great feeling. This group was my first as a head coach so this one had a little more emotion than the others,” Peterson said. “It’s a great accomplishment for these young ladies and says a lot about who they are and the culture they have helped create here at Neumann-Goretti.” The Saints only led by three at the half, 24-21, but made the necessary adjustments in the final 16 minutes to pull away in what Peterson described as a “hard-fought game.” “We knew Bishop Canevin was going to give us a good one. They have athletic players who can do it all. We made adjustments at halftime going to our 2-3 match-up and it got the job done,” she said. “Tatiana Jones and Jabria Ingram were huge last night in the second half. Both struggled in the first half but turned it around in the third and fourth quarter.” The coach told the duo at halftime that the game would be dictated by their play in the final 16 minutes. “They took on the challenge like they have all season and put together an unbelievable finish,” Peterson said. Jones led the Saints with 19 points while Ingram, a University of Hartford signee, finished with nine points and 10 steals. Diamond Johnson contributed 14 points to the winning cause. The Neumann-Goretti players and

The Class 3A state champion Neumann-Goretti girls basketball team had plenty to smile about Monday night following its 63-46 victory over Bishop Canevin. coaches opened the PIAA tournament dealing with the unfamiliar situation of suffering back-to-back losses in the Catholic League title game – 54-39 to Cardinal O’Hara, and District 12 Class 3A championship game – 62-59 to Imhotep Charter. The state tournament presented another one-and-done scenario, leaving no room for error in this Pennsylvania high school version of March Madness. “It’s always tough taking a loss but two in a row will either make you or break you,” Peterson said. “After our

two losses, our seniors stepped up and reminded these young guys what was at stake.” Once the state playoffs came around, the Saints, who finished the season with a 22-7 record, got back on the championship track in the form of a 69-32 victory over Pine Grove. Wins over Loyalsock Township, 79-31, Saint Basil, 47-29, and Dunmore, 66-42, followed. Neumann-Goretti was originally slated to play for the championship on Thursday, March 22, but last week’s nor’easter led to a complete reshuffling

of the PIAA boys and girls basketball schedule. The players ended up getting an unexpected mental break heading into the final. Monday night’s return trip to South Philly included a break of another kind – sleep. “One last bus ride together as this team and having the win made it a better one,” Peterson said. “I will say they played their hearts out because about 45 minutes into the ride they were all sleeping.” Looking ahead, Ingram, Daihah Parmley and Angel Ricks, Peterson’s three

original players, will be moving on, but the coach said the entire group of players was an “amazing group.” “I cannot thank them enough for the amazing four years and allowing me to coach them,” Peterson said. “This group, especially my three originals (Jabria, Daijah, and Angel), have such and amazing bond that will never be broken. They made things easier for me this year, and their support and dedication to the program has helped pave the way for these younger guys.”

EAGLES INSIDER

Eagles add several new faces two weeks into free agency

T

hey were $11 million over the NFL’s salary cap only a few days before free agency began on March 14. The question then wasn’t what the Eagles would do in free agency, it was how in the world would they trim all of those dollars without compromising the integrity of the roster? Well, the Eagles are pretty much through the first phase of the rosterbuilding process and they’ve come out far ahead of the game. Yes, the Eagles lost some key players and some household names, players we’ve come to know and love through the years. But the net-net is that the Eagles have strengthened themselves at key positions – the defensive line, wide receiver – and kept a key defender, linebacker Nigel Bradham. They’ve

navigated the salary cap to give themselves breathing room and flexibility. And they’re in position to actually improve over last year’s Super Bowl roster, with some caveats. The recent legal troubles of newly acquired defensive end Michael Bennett bear watching and certainly the locker room chemistry has been altered and will need to be developed starting when the players report to the NovaCare Complex in mid-April, but there is no denying that the Eagles

have bolstered the roster with some smart moves during the free-agency period. ‡ 3URMHFWLQJ WKDW %HQQHWWœV OHJDO SLF ture clears up in time for training camp and the season, his presence gives the Eagles a boost along the defensive OLQH +HœV D WKUHH WLPH 3UR %RZO SOD\ er who is an excellent pass rusher. He also plays the run physically. Bennett is a high-energy player and a winner, and the Eagles can use him as an end or move him inside to tackle in passrushing situations. The depth chart at defensive end is loaded: Brandon Graham, Bennett, Derek Barnett and Chris Long make up a fearsome foursome of pass rushers. ‡ 6LJQLQJ YHWHUDQ +DORWL 1JDWD JLYHV the Eagles depth at defensive tackle as Ngata, in theory, replaces Beau Allen

He’s a talented young player here on a one-year contract. Let’s see if he blossoms as an Eagle. There’s more to be done. The Eagles need help at tight end, they need another running back and the linebacker position could use more depth. But two weeks into free agency, the Eagles are ahead of the game, and that’s promising for the season to come.

The Neumann-Goretti boys basketball team knows all about what Hershey has to offer from making those annual March trips to the Giant Center. After going 12-1 during the regular season, the Saints opened the postseason with a shocking 54-40 loss WR 6W -RHÂśV 3UHS DW KRPH “We were disappointed,â€? ArULJDOH VDLG Âł:H MXVW GLGQÂśW KDYH D good game that day. We were out of sync for a little while. We had two weeks of practice to figure it out.â€? When it came time to step back on the court for the District 12 AAA championship game, the Saints rediscovered their winning ways in the form of a 78-49 victory over Dobbins. Neumann-Goretti followed it up with state tournament victories over Steelton-Highspire, Wyoming Seminary, Bishop McDevitt and Trinity. While preparing for state tournament games has been keeping Arrigale busy, he has also been keeping a close eye on the NCAA Tournament checking in on former All-Catholic standouts Ja’Quan Newton at the University of Miami, Quade Green at the University of Kentucky and Dhamir CosbyRoundtree at Villanova University.

Newtown’s team was eliminated in the first round by Loyola-Chicago – the Cinderella story of this year’s tournament – on a buzzer beater while Green’s squad was eliminated by Kansas State in the Sweet 16. Cosby-Roundtree’s team, meanwhile, is traveling to San Antonio for the Final Four. Up next is Saturday’s game against Kansas in a battle of No. 1 seeds. Game time is 8:49 p.m on TBS. The freshman forward made the most of his 12 minutes in Sunday’s 71-59 victory over Texas Tech by tallying four points and seven rebounds off the bench. Arrigale reached out via text to say he was really proud. “He played with a lot of energy, Arrigale said. Today, the focus is on helping Neumann-Goretti keep its championship streak intact. Come the weekend, he can pull out those blue and white Villanova pom poms. His daughter, Alexandria Arrigale, happens to be a freshman there. He watched Sunday’s game with his daughter at home. “My focus is on these guys, but my heart is with Villanova, Arrigale said.

MARK CAROSIELLO

Neumann-Goretti’s Dymir Montague put up 15 points in the Saints’ semi-finals win over Trinity, 66-56.
