Our religious appliance

E

e’ve reached a point in our lives where all our appliances need to be replaced. One by one, the shiny dishwasher, the refrigTom Cardella erator - that was once state of the art - the gas range (we still call a “stove) and even the little portable radio that sits on the window ledge in our kitchen are breaking down. In this way, we seniors become like newlyweds — badly in need of house furnishings. There is a big difference between newlyweds and seniors. There are ways that some newly married couples may at least partially furnish their homes through gifts. There’s the bridal shower (multiple toasters received may be traded in for other useful household items), wedding cash and even the traditional housewarming gifts. Seniors badly need similar options. I suggested to my wife that we divorce and remarry so we can purchase the new gas range we needed. That’s when I found out that after 52 years of wedded bliss, my wife no longer considers me a serious source for creative solutions. Undaunted, I suggested that we strike up a deal with another needy senior couple.

re Nash, founder and CEO of Nash Automotive, sat on the witness stand testifying to the integrity of his former employee, Taylor Edsel, as Edsel stood trial for setting fire to the company’s alternative fuel automobile factory. Edsel was a convicted arsonist. As a boy, he had burnt down his family’s house and killed their dog. But he was reformed, Nash said. Edsel had done his time in a juvenile lockup, completed a reentry program and returned to society as a productive member of the workforce. But as Nash’s testimony progressed, it began to unravel under acute questioning from

Edsel’s defense attorney. Although he dutifully recited his seemingly scripted lines, Nash’s delivery told a completely different tale. He lurched forward in his seat, gnawed at his fingernails, rubbed his face profusely and turned beet red while fumbling over his words. It was like someone had posted a sign on his forehead that read “GUILTY. Alone, that probably wouldn’t have been enough to convict or even charge Nash with setting fire to his own factory, but it surely was enough to absolve Edsel of the crime and to win the Philadelphia mock trial championship for Roman Catholic High School earlier this month. “We’re kind of known for coming up with these outrageous cases for the defense, said Roman co-captain Christian Dellavella,

who alternates between prosecutor and defense attorney roles in the courtroom drama that is mock trial. The strategy seems to be working. Presented annually by Temple Law’s Legal Education and Participation Program in partnership with the Philadelphia Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Division, the John C. Bradway High School Mock Trial Competition involves about 50 teams from throughout the city and its suburbs. Working attorneys judge each of the individual performances on a list of criteria in calculating team scores. Roman, on the strength of its unorthodox presentation of the prescribed criminal case, emerged as the victor for the fourth conASS @=;/< ^OUS ,,

2SaS`dW\U ]T a][S Z]dS To the Editor: Tom Cardella’s recent column “Kenney Unloved (March 16) ended with the suggestion Kenney has turned his back on Mummers. Based on two years of interaction with this administration on Mummers issues, that characterization is both unfair and untrue. For seven years, the Second Street community has struggled to keep the Second Street parade safe and enjoyable, but foremost safe. That is impossible without the man hours and resources dedicated to the associated tasks by city departments. It is no small amount of work or dollars spent. The Second Street Safety Committee meets numerous times throughout the year with public safety officials on planning and implementation strategies. These include police, public property and parks and recreation. Are there still problems? Yes, and there will be every year when you get over capacity crowds like we do. But the level of cooperation and dialogue that we have with the police and other departments would be hard to match. There are of course issues that still rile the Mummers like the ever controversial

Bad for business If House Bill No. 685 becomes law, you won’t read this newspaper anymore. Hard-working people will lose their jobs. Small business owners will suffer. Communities will see a part of their identity vanish overnight. House Bill No. 685 would prohibit the unsolicited delivery of newspapers in Philadelphia. It also would create a ripple effect that bill proponents callously ignore. Many of your friends and neighbors work at these newspapers writing stories, selling advertisements, designing artwork,

and ask readers to respect these guidelines: r -FUUFST NVTU CF MBCFMFE BDDPSEJOHMZ J F -FUUFS UP UIF &EJUPS OFBUMZ IBOE written or typed and limited to 350 words; r 5IF XSJUFS T GVMM OBNF QIPOF OVNCFS with area code and complete address must be included for verification purposes. delivering the papers, etc. Many of your friends and neighbors indirectly depend on these newspapers for employment, from the agent who handles the newspaper’s insurance to the waitress who serves hungry reporters at the local diner. House Bill No. 685 would kill these jobs and more as money disappears from many segments of the local economy. The carnage doesn’t end there. Small business owners rely on these newspapers for effective and affordable marketing plans that bring customers through their doors. A small business can target residents in its neighborhood, offer a coupon or sale, and increase business — all without busting the budget. If passed, House Bill No. 685 takes away this valuable tool, making it even more difficult for a family to establish and grow their business. Beyond the negative economic impact and financial hardship House Bill No. 685 would thrust upon thousands of Philadelphians, the bill aims to kill institutions that have served residents for decades. These newspapers hold government responsible for its actions and offer a voice to many who feel powerless. Some people lack the financial means to regularly purchase paid publications or buy a computer. Still others lack the skills to uncover news and information on the Internet. These newspapers are the only connection for many, especially the poor and elderly, to their government and community. The newspapers House Bill No. 685 would kill aren’t faceless, corporate chain stores in a mall. Generations of Philadel-

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m phians have celebrated their children’s triumphs, mourned the loss of beloved individuals and gained a greater sense of community through their pages. These newspapers are the history books of the neighborhoods that collectively make Philadelphia the city it is. They are living, breathing contributors to their communities and vital pieces of this city’s fabric. Tell your legislators to stand up for jobs, give small business owners the tools they need to thrive and leave your newspaper alone. Tell them to reject House Bill No. 685. FEEDING ON ITS own success and the knowledgeable guidance of alumni, Roman’s mock trial program has grown over the last decade from about 10 participants to this year’s crop of 47. That’s enough to field four varsity teams and a JV. They hail from diverse corners of the city. On the title-winning “A squad, co-captain Joe Doherty of Fox Chase portrays Nash, the duped auto industry magnate, while Josh Picciotti from 17th and Ritner streets is the defense attorney under whose

direct examination Nash crumbles. Bensalem’s Joe Pizzo portrays Edsel, the defendant who may or may not be falsely accused — he’s innocent when Roman stages the defense. Mount Airy’s Paul Keene is an expert witness with a British accent who testifies to the likelihood that Edsel has become a recidivist. Packer Park resident Justin Vespasiani plays the father of the defendant who witnesses his son fleeing the fire scene. Ryan Frank of Mayfair is a prosecuting attorney, while Nick Hamilton of Pine Valley is a defense attorney. Steven Patton, a real-life assistant district attorney in Philadelphia and 2008 Roman graduate, is the head coach while John Pensabene is the varsity coach and faculty moderator. The program has nine coaches in all. As a group, their commitment rivals any sports team or extracurricular activity at

Roman. Their preparations for the season began near the end of last school year. They meet for about four hours each Saturday in addition to after-school sessions as needed, usually when competitions are imminent. “Seven of us haven’t had a week off from mock trial since June, Vespasiani said. That’s when they first got their hands on the case materials for a series of competitions presented by the Empire Mock Trial program. In October, they traveled to Empire’s “World Championship in San Francisco and placed second. They’ve also competed in three college-sponsored tournaments at La Salle, Penn and the University of Pittsburgh. Roman’s “A team won two of the college events, while one of its other varsity teams won the third. “We have the largest mock trial program in the state, Pensabene said. At the city tournament, all four of Ro-

man’s varsity teams advanced to the final 16. Three made the quarterfinals and two made the semis. The eventual victors knocked out another Roman squad in the final four. Team members reap a multitude of benefits from their participation. In general, it’s a great way to develop their public speaking and acting skills. It also looks good on a resume, Keene said. The travel appealed to Vespasiani, while Picciotti wanted to meet new people. Winning was the big draw for Pizzo. “I think it’s just the idea of getting a (championship) ring, he said. The program isn’t for the faint of heart. There’s little room for stagnation on a roster packed with go-getters. “I think it’s for an A-type personality, people that always think they’re right, Doherty said. “People who like to argue. A>@

D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 We exchange houses and hold housewarming parties. A few months after the house party, and with our stash of new appliances, we move back into our old homes. I don’t think Seth Williams is in any position to prosecute us, do you? As I suspected, my wife ignored even this flash of brilliance, and in fact, was moved to utter a rare profanity directed my way. We purchased a new gas range. “We don’t need a bunch of bells and whistles on our new stove, my wife told the salesman “Not the way she cooks meat loaf, I added. That’s when I discovered that my wife no longer pretends that I’m the wittiest guy in town. The grates on the burners of our new range weigh at least 25 pounds each. Both of us have begun a weightlifting program just so we clean the top of our new range in the future. The cost of this range is almost equal to a new battleship, give or take a few decks. The instruction booklet for our new range is as lengthy as The Affordable Care Act. “That’s a lot of instructions for making an occasional meat loaf, I remarked, confirming my wife’s suspicion that I was about as useful as a Donald Trump tweet. Some of the instructions deal with various uses for the timer. Did you know if you’re in Beirut, this oven senses that what you will need most of all when you arrive home is a homecooked meal? The oven reads your brainwaves, adjusts for time zone differences, and the moment you enter the home, a freshly cooked — in our case — meatloaf awaits you. OK, I’m exaggerating a bit. But what I’m not exaggerating about is that our new gas range has a Sabbath setting. The Sabbath mode on our new range is a routine feature in many new home appliances these days. It allows Shabbat-observant Jews to use the appliances on their religious holidays and comply with what is known as Kashrut law. What we learned

N southphillyreview.com

was that, according to Kashrut law, raw food may not be cooked on the Shabbat. The food must be cooked beforehand and kept warm until eaten. Appliances such as our new range with a Sabbath setting have a safety feature that shuts off the heat after a certain number of hours. The appliance becomes useful for those observing these religious laws. Our history of religious observance in our own religion is spotty at best. It felt strange to own an appliance that is more religious than ourselves. We likely will not get into heaven, but we take some comfort in knowing that maybe our new gas range will get there. Maybe if this range has an atheist setting, I can cook anything any way I wished because I’ll wind up in hell? It got me to thinking that if we’re going to use appliances to enforce Jewish Sabbath laws, why not do the same for other religions? During this time of Lent, wouldn’t it be useful if Christians owned a “stove that would shut off before you broke your fast? A Jewish-Muslim oven could refuse to cook pork. You could even include a recording that would scold you if you tried to do so. I pitched these ideas to my wife while she was struggling to set the correct controls on the new range. I really believe the woman is losing her sense of humor. For some unexplained reason, the Sabbath setting has some relationship to whether our new gas range registers temperature in fahrenheit or Celsius. Inadvertently, we had turned on the Sabbath setting and now the temperature was registering in Celsius. I suggested that we might have to attend services at a synagogue for the range to agree to convert to Fahrenheit. I suspected that, at the least, we would spend the rest of our lives trying to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. But we finally figured out a way to turn off the setting. I swear the gas range now gives us a reproachful look. But the meatloaf always turns out fine. Note to Kellyanne Conway: this new range can spy on you. A>@

Museum research fellow, is the other lead curator. The show will run through Nov. 26 and showcase the profound impact that violence and destruction have had, and continue to have, on the many war-torn regions of the world. It will also serve as a way to highlight the importance of the preservation of the ancient sites across the Near East and Mediterranean, while exploring the movement and displacement of its people. Besides the more than 50 objects on display, the exhibit will feature a range of Arabic manuscripts from the University of Pennsylvania Libraries, music and sounds of the Near East and documentary film clips. Contemporary artwork from Syrian artist Issam Kourbaj — considered to be a modern-day response to the artifacts and exhibition themes — will be displayed throughout the exhibit, too. The opening festivities will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11 a.m. followed by a special celebration of Syrian and Iraqi culture, including regional folk music, talks and more. The event will be free with general admission.

Her interest in the archaeology and heritage of the Middle East has also led Al Kuntar to become a National Geographic emerging explorer, participating in its “Saving the Past initiative. Having moved to South Philly in 2012, Al Kuntar works as a research fellow at the Penn Museum where she also serves as a co-director of the Safeguarding the Heritage of Syria and Iraq Project — run by the Museum’s Penn Cultural Heritage Center, the Smithsonian Institute and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. IN HER TIME living in Philly, Al Kuntar has found the city’s character and diversity make her feel as though she fits right in. While she’s never felt like a foreigner in the city, she recognizes that oftentimes there is still a disconnect between U.S. citizens and persons of Muslim or Middle-Eastern descent. “There has actually been a Syrian com-

munity in South Philadelphia since the ’80s and ’90s when they first settled here for economic reasons. One of my mother’s friends and her kids came here when the youngest was a child, Al Kuntar said. “It was good getting to reconnect with them. To spread awareness of Middle Eastern culture, she hopes to further use her cocurated exhibit to teach attendees more about the people of this region of the world in addition to its history. She believes people should be introduced to this part of the world, just as they are western civilizations — without prejudice. “I want to show through my exhibit positive images of existence and change the stereotypical view of the land as violence and dark, Al Kuntar said. “This exhibit is one of a kind in connecting the past to the present. The land is so diverse and rich in terms of culture. It’s sad to think of these places being destroyed. Equally as passionate about the preservation of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern artifacts, Ristvet hopes to use their co-curated exhibit to convey to others what can be done to help. Frank’s Savory Artichoke Stew

News from Toll Man Joe’s

W

hat are you doing with that random can of artichokes sitting in the pantry? That is if you have one. If not, this may be the time to purchase some, as Frank J. Gallo Jr. makes them the central focus of his Savory Artichoke Stew. Yes, spring is here, and the idea of making such a hearty dish may seem a little out of season. Debating over this minor detail is simply a waste of time. Here’s the only word that should matter: Enjoy!

Pieciuk said. “We make everything from scratch, from our bread to our walnuts and broccoli rabe. Nothing is bought already prepped, and I pick my own produce so that I can inspect it. In sticking with the healthier menu item trend, PrimoHoagies will be offering vegetarian options and a new “hoagie in a bowl option — imagine a salad with classic “hoagie fixings on top. It will also be offering three of its new hoagies, the Bada Boom, made with long hots, the Bada Bing, topped with broccoli rabe, and a popular buffalo cutlet. Getting back to ballpark basics, many of the existing Citizens Bank Park concessions are also trying to incorporate new twists to their existing menu items. For example, Wayback Burgers has decided to nix its cheesy pork roll burger this year, replacing it with a new “wiz with burger on a pretzel bun. “We’re just trying something new relative to the market, Nikki-Lynn Boath, marketing coordinator at Jake’s Franchising, LLC., said. “Cheese Whiz and pretzels are both trendy in Philly, so we thought it would be a good combination. Also serving up something new, Seasons Pizza, which opened at the ballpark in 2008

and credits itself as the Phillies’ World Series-winning good luck charm, will offer chicken parm and baked ziti slice options. With quality ingredients and fresh-made dough each day, owner Tarek Bahgat says he hasn’t heard one complaint about his pizza yet. Federal Donuts is entering its fifth year in the ballpark with a new, wildly-popular cookies n’ creme-flavored doughnut, in addition to its cinnamon brown sugar item. Executive chef and partner Matt Fein said that since the vanilla bean doughnut has been on the menu for years, it was time to change things up. Referred to as “the next step in the evolution of stadium food and beverage service by Aramark’s general manager at the ballpark, Kevin Tedesco, another big change this season will be the introduction of Zoom Foods behind section 126. To improve the guest experience and speed of transaction time, self-ordering kiosks will enable fans to swipe their credit or debit cards and receive a receipt. Much like a built-to-order kiosk system, the receipt is then taken to a pick-up window to trade in for a customer’s order. “There really is something for everyone this year, Canpagna said. A>@

And since then, the Eagles have been blessed with the likes of Wilbert Montgomery, Ricky Watters, Duce Staley, Brian Westbrook and LeSean McCoy.

But as the Eagles dig in for the NFL Draft, they look at their depth chart at running back and see they are thin. Very much so. Ryan Mathews, a talented and productive player when he’s on the field, simply isn’t on the field very much. Darren Sproles is a remarkable specimen at 5-feet-6, but he’s not a workhorse running back. Wendell Smallwood showed signs in his rookie season that he could be a nice back in the league, but is he really in the category of the legacy of Eagles backs from the past? We’ve got a month to go before the draft comes barreling down the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and attracts upward of 200,000 NFL fans to the city, and you can be sure running back is an important position to address as the Eagles look at their roster. Since the ill-fated decision by former head

coach Chip Kelly to trade McCoy to the Buffalo Bills for linebacker Kiko Alonso prior to the 2015 season, the Eagles have been in a quandary at running back. Kelly tried to fix it by signing Mathews and DeMarco Murray in the aftermath of the McCoy deal, but Murray wasn’t a fit for Kelly’s scattershot offensive scheme (he had a Pro Bowl season in Tennessee in 2016 after the Eagles traded him to the Titans) and Mathews has missed six games in his two seasons as an Eagle, carrying the football 261 times. So what’s next? There are veteran running backs on the street, led by future Hall of Famer Adrian Peterson, should the Eagles be so inclined to go in that direction. The draft is said to be stacked with talent at running back, so maybe the Eagles restock there.

Whatever they do, this much is certain: The Eagles must re-establish the rich history at the position. The fancy-schmancy NFL is all about throwing the football, and adding receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith will help this team’s passing game. But without some ground and pound, the Eagles can’t keep pace. So put this one on the must-have list: Fix the running back position. The Eagles have a history here, and, more important, they have an offense that wasn’t good enough on third-andshort situations or in touchdown opportunities in the red zone in 2016. While the NFL game has changed, and the big-time passing game is now in vogue, the oldschool ground game can’t be forgotten. The Eagles have a need, and they have to make it a priority to fill it in the next month of time. A>@
