e just learned what happens when Donald Trump runs into a difficult challenge. He gives up. The president was called on Tom Cardella his promise to repeal and replace Obamacare, and he waved the white flag. Called the whole thing off after just 17 days. Hell, it takes Congress that long just to say, “God bless you! after someone sneezes. This is the problem when you elect a businessman — especially an arrogant businessman used to getting his way. Businessman Trump was always able to intimidate some poor schmucks into obedience by bullying them through ASS CARDELLA ^OUS ! ,,

magine being a sophomore in high school, and telling classmates, family members and friends, “I am going to open a pizza shop.â€? While some may think this sounds crazy for a high schooler, Rickey Sciulli, now 65, is living proof that it can be done, and done successfully. Back in 1967, Rickey, along with his older brother Ralph, now 68, opened the doors to the original Ralph and Rickey’s at Taney and Tasker streets in Grays Ferry. Rickey used some of his time at Bishop Neumann High School researching how to buy a building. At the end of 1966, he used that new-found knowledge to put a deposit on a building. Ralph told his younger sibling, “You go to school, and I will work.â€? Rickey’s response was, “We will work together.â€? Their father, Antonio, helped with designing the pizza boxes. @WQYSg ZSTb O\R @OZ^V AQWcZZW aVO`S O\ OTbS`\]]\ ZOcUV eVWZS `SĂ€ SQbW\U ]\ bVS That was 50 years ago. nce again, according to the emcee, you can forget all your troubles as you enter the cabaret. This time, “Cabaret, the multiaward-winning musical, is being presented as part of the 50th anniversary season of the Roundabout Theatre Co., and is holding forth at the Academy of Music through Sunday (April 9). Joining the master of ceremonies and the girls at the Kit Kat Klub is young singer Sally Bowles, who performs in the rowdy Berlin nightclub as the 1920s draw to a close, and a very dark and tumultuous time begins. Leigh Ann Larkin takes the role of Sally Bowles and says she brings her own interpretation to the character. She says, “I remember seeing the show with Natasha Richardson years ago and falling in love

with it. But I approach Sally from a very original, authentic place. And what’s so exciting about this production is they allow each actress to bring her own original identity to the role. With its lush musical score and wonderful production numbers, Cabaret first looks at a time that is carefree and playful. But then, it all turns dark as the Nazis come to power and the people of Berlin must endure the politically changing atmosphere. “It can be very dark, Larkin says, “and the challenges of hitting such high highs and such low lows in two-and-a half hours can be very challenging. But in the end, the writing is so good that it takes you on an amazing journey. Larkin, originally from Pittsburgh, has played many other female roles such as Petra in A Little Night Music, Evelyn Nesbit in Ragtime, Dainty June in Gypsy and others. “And each time I get to wear the skin of each of the women I play, she said. “I get

to tap into each of their psyches because cinnati College-Conservatory of Music, they’ve all been such great roles, and that majoring in musical theater. Transforming herself into Bowles since has been an amazing gift. January, Larkin says she can’t worry about what she’ll do next because when you’re so immersed in something that’s so demanding, that’s what you have to concentrate on. In addition to being on the stage, Larkin has done some TV and film work, and insists she loves all the work. “It’s so nice to have a career where you can spread your wings and do it all, she said. A>@

OVER THE YEARS, Larkin says there hasn’t been a character she couldn’t relate to in some way. “When it comes to Sally, I can relate to her resilience, her strength, her playfulness, even her vulnerabilities, she said. Growing up in Pittsburgh, Larkin recalls that friends and family saw her potential even before she did. “Performing was just something I always did, but I never realized you could go to school for it and do it as a career. That is not until I reached high school. That’s when my teachers and my parents saw something in me and began encouraging me to take it all seriously. After her high school graduation, she headed to Point Park College for a year before transferring to the University of Cin-

Op-Ed

;OWZ S [OWZ

/UOW\ab bVS 0WZZ To the Editor: Just before writing this letter, I left voice messages with two state representatives, my own district representative, William Keller, and Angel Cruz who is the sponsor of House Bill 685. This bill would effectively stop all circulars, including the South Philly Review, from being left on our doorsteps. The rationale for this bill is that it would not only cause excess litter, but would alert criminals to unoccupied houses — seriously! What is funny about this is that some residents of fully occupied homes do not bother to pick up the paper or any other litter. Of course, I left the same message to both legislators: Do not pass HB 685 for all the reasons cited in last Thursday’s South Philly Review (“Bad for business, March 30). It is too valuable a paper to let die, just to satisfy some lawmaker’s idea of being neat and tidy. Besides, what would we do without the humor of Tom Cardella who correctly notes that seniors like us actually need another shower to replace all those dying appliances we got as newlyweds? It took me more than 40 years to go through two wedding toasters and two “stoves. I just hope I can find a more secular gas range than Tom did, not something programmed

By now, many of you should be familiar with our annual Rising Stars issue in which students are recognized for his or her efforts in the classroom. This is much more than a pull-a-name-out-of-the-hat routine. We want to hear what makes your student stand out from the pack. Keep it short and sweet, 250–350 words max. Candidates will range from first grade through high school. There is only one rule: the student must reside in or attend a South Philly school. n March 31, at approximately 2 a.m., an unknown black male entered the 7-Eleven, 1701 South St., and ordered a pack of cigarettes. When the employee retrieved the item, the suspect stated he had a cup of gasoline, and demanded money. Does the name Barry Ashbee ring a bell? OK, so his name doesn’t roll off the tongue like Bobby Clarke, Eric Lindros, Bernie Parent or Bill Barber. But Ashbee assisted on three goals in the first period, setting a franchise record

for the most assists in a period of a playoff game. It has happened only 86 times in NHL history. On April 4, 1968, the headlines were centered around Parent, as the hall-of-fame goalie held the St. Louis Blues scoreless for more than 53 minutes of a Stanley Cup playoff game at the Spectrum. Some may remember this was the year the old showplace was closed for a month to repair the roof. This moment goes all the way to the days when the Flyers used to play in the Western Division — long before the time when towns like Phoenix, Anaheim and Las Vegas were even considered as possible destinations for NHL franchises. These are many other historic occasions, most notably the 1975 Stanley Cup championship season, in which the Flyers defeated the Buffalo Sabres, that help ease the pain of what has turned out to be another season of what ifs. What if that 10-game winning streak was 15? What if they played more consistently

during the heart of the regular season? Fans spent the final weeks of the season wondering if their beloved orange and black could make the nearly impossible six-point climb in the standings. Wouldn’t have been great if this 50th anniversary season included a postseason chapter? Instead, this milestone season is likely to be soon forgotten. This season featured Bobby Clarke, Eric Lindros and other Fly-

ers greats from past seasons on the ice together for an alumni game against the Pittsburgh Penguins. When the season comes to a halt this weekend, besides trying to play virtual GM, take some time to reflect on the good ol’ days. You know, the days when the postseason was a yearly event. Or move on, and start thinking maybe, just maybe, the next half century will produce more than two championship seasons. A>@

D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 lawsuits. If he wanted something done, all he had to do was order it, whether it was a Big Mac, some orange hair dye or another glitzy property across which he could splash his name. And we all heard from that taped conversation in the bus how easy it was for “The Donald” to get women. You don’t even have to ask permission. Well, guess what? Life in the White House is different. You kind of do have to ask permission — or at least get enough votes from Congress. And it seems as if Congress is more difficult to persuade than the women Trump bragged about. Turns out Congress is less persuaded by celebrity than what you can do for them. When your approval rating is 37 percent and falling, there’s not much you can do. Speaker Paul Ryan tried to dazzle his fellow representatives with a blackboard and chalk. In the end, it was members of his own party who told him where he could stick his chalk. The Trump-Ryan fiasco ended after Congress called their bluff. It took only 17 days for the president to find out that, yes, health care is “complicated.” Forget about the blame game that’s now being played. Trump has reportedly blamed everyone for his failure — from Democrats and Republicans to Jared Kushner for going skiing when his daddy-in-law needed him. Trump owns only one pet — a scapegoat. But here’s the real reason Trump and the Republicans struck out. Americans believe they have a fundamental right to health care. Trump knows that. He acknowledged as much during the campaign. His promise — more folks covered at less cost. No one left “dying in the streets,” as he put it. The problem is the Republican Party sees health care as a burden on the budget, not as a right. The Republican answer when they can’t solve a problem is to shove it off on the states. Think about this: During the Bush years, when did the Republicans show any interest in coming up with a national health-care plan? Never. It was only after Obama and the Dems passed the Affordable Care Act that Republicans became passionate — to repeal the ACA, not improve it. Republicans will tell you that before Obamacare, no American went without health care in this country. It’s bad when you’re full of BS. It’s worse when you believe your own BS. Here’s what Republi-

N southphillyreview.com

cans believe and why they have never really been interested in you getting decent health-care coverage. Prior to the passage of the ACA, they said if you couldn’t afford health care, you could always go to the ER and, as Republicans are fond of saying, no hospital could lawfully turn you away. In a nutshell, that’s the real Republican healthcare plan. Oh, Republicans will pay lip service to competition. If you’re a Republican, competition cures all ills. Competition is never a cure-all, especially in the case of health care. I used to work for the federal government. Competition gives us lots of choices. But our premiums still keep increasing. And in the end, most of us wind up with Blue Cross because that’s the insurance most doctors and hospitals will accept. And as for depending on the ER for routine medical treatment, what you get are overcrowded and understaffed ERs, and all of us wind up paying for the cost. If you wonder why the Republicans never came up with an alternate plan for when Obamacare was finally repealed, it’s because they never really thought they needed any. “Repeal Obamacare” was an easy campaign slogan. Many Republicans secretly hoped it would never get repealed. Even worse, Trump and the Republicans thought you didn’t care either. That’s why some Republicans were so surprised by those raucous town hall meetings. Some of them went into hiding. Anyone seen Pat Toomey lately? The Ryan plan was greeted like a guest who belched at dinner. The Congressional Budget Office figures on the new plan were damning. Polls show Americans prefer Obamacare. Trump is not a detail guy. He never understood the new plan. Thought saying it was “terrific” was enough to sell it since he’s the self-professed master salesman. Ryan tried to mollify Republican dissidents with an amended plan. The CBO reported that the new plan was worse yet. Trump’s interest waned. Without a quick win, he wanted to move on. We know how this story ends. Steve Bannon wanted Trump to force a vote so he could add to his enemies list. Ryan convinced Trump to call off the vote like a bad date. The new Trump strategy is to hope that Obamacare dies. Let Democrats take the blame. Perception is all that matters. Lessons learned - the short attention span of our new president is 17 days. Kushner may have to give up skiing for the next four years. A>@ S O U T H P H I L LY R E V I E W I

nce again, according to the emcee, you can forget all your troubles as you enter the cabaret.

“I get

Bringing back kelly green 2/D3 A>/2/@=

hen Jeffrey Lurie said, as he was about to wrap up his state-of-theEagles news conference during the NFL annual meeting in Phoenix in late March, that he would like the team to use the kelly green jerseys as an alternate color in the near future, social media and talk radio lit up like the Fourth of July. @imawesome said on Twitter, “Kelly green all the way! Echoed @GENTILEEJ1A on Twitter, “Thank Goodness!! Let’s make it happen Jeff!! What is it that makes fans feel such a passion for jersey colors? The Eagles have changed

theirs several times since the Frankford Yellow Jackets wore the colors of Sweden in 1933 — blue and yellow — but it is the kelly green fascination that fuels so many fans’ interest now. In 1996, with Lurie in his second full season as the team’s owner, the Eagles moved away from the kelly green and introduced midnight green jerseys to the fans, with a largely popular reaction. The midnight green was bold and innovative, as the Eagles distanced themselves from a kelly green that bore a striking similarity to what the New York Jets wore. Since then, as the NFL has permitted teams to wear “alternate jerseys twice in each season, the Eagles have gone with the “Back In Black look featuring black jerseys and black pants. In 2010, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 1960 NFL championship team, the Eagles wore that version of green for a game and the fans reacted very favorably. The Eagles, understanding the fans’ love of the kelly green, introduced a proposal to the

N @STS`SSa eO\bSR Referees are needed for a basketball league. Training sessions will include on-

NFL that teams be permitted to also change the helmets as part of the alternate jersey. That way, the thinking went, the jerseys and helmets would match, in kelly green, and the fans would enjoy the whole retro look. “I want to see us use kelly green as an alternate and Thursday night-type of uniform, Lurie said. “The only thing blocking us (is) we can’t use a kelly green helmet yet. So that’s what we’re waiting for. We’re going to keep pushing at it. The only reason we withdrew is we were told it wasn’t going to pass. But they are all well aware of it. Many teams would like to see this. My hope is we’ll be able to get it done, hopefully by next March. What is it about the jersey colors that inspire fans’ emotions so vigorously? Would fans react the same if the Eagles reverted, for a game or two in a season, to the 1970s white jerseys and white helmets and white pants, with the high stripe on the shoulder? Or is it a generational thing? The fans are of the age that they remember the Reggie White and Randall

Cunningham days, when Buddy Ryan was the head coach and the Gang Green defense brought back a franchise that was largely DOA in the years after Dick Vermeil stopped coaching here, and there is an emotional tug thinking back to those days. The Eagles aren’t planning to change their jerseys from the midnight green. They love the colors, and the fans are happy with the look and that’s the way it’s going to be. But Lurie wants kelly green to come back in some capacity, and “the sooner, the better, he said. That’s exciting to the fans. The past is part of this team’s present and its future, and any way to connect the years is a win-win for everyone. In the end, which jersey do you prefer: the midnight green of now or the kelly green from the 1980s and ’90s or even the white-on-white look from 55 years ago? Style matters, as the fans have so eloquently stated. A>@

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank You St Joseph for Favors Granted.
