recently read “Gone with the Wind for the first time. Margaret Mitchell’s novel has become controversial over the years because of its romantic depiction of slavery under Tom Cardella the Confederacy. What I found in the novel that’s most relevant to our society today is the character of Scarlett O’Hara. In some ways, Scarlett’s battle against the restrictions on women in her era is a forerunner of early feminism. Many of those constraints seem downright inane to us today. Example: Women such as

fter South Philly native Sir Stanley Wojtusik passed away in 2015, members of the Battle of the Bulge Association worried any plans for a battle memorial in the city went with him. Jon Peterson, CEO of American Legion Post 405, the Benjamin Franklin Post, attended the local Delaware Valley chapter meeting on Wednesday, March 29 at the U.S. Coast Guard Station, Columbus Boulevard and Washington Avenue, to share project updates. In a presentation to about 15 association members, Peterson explained the project Wojtusik proposed almost a decade ago has finally taken its first major steps toward being constructed. Peterson said he learned of the project years ago when Wojtusik gave a presentation on it to Post 405 at the Union League, and where he ultimately requested the American Legion help his organization make it a reality. “We said, ‘Sure, we’d love to do what

aving lived in many cities across the globe, Claire Moyer has always considered herself to be a bit of a wanderer. Thus, it was only fitting that upon moving to Philadelphia, she secured a directing role in Inis Nua Theatre Company’s premiere of “Swallow, a performance that travels through time and place to tell its characters’ stories. “Not to sound corny, but I really think we can all find something to relate to in this piece, Moyer said. “It is such an intimate portrait of longing and hope at the most vulnerable points in our lives, and each

character has their own unique voice for what that experience is. In her own life experience, the 31-year old who was born in Tokyo recalls becoming interested in the theater when she took acting classes at the Raleigh Little Theatre while in middle school. She then went on to become more serious about the performing arts during her high school years due to the numerous productions in which she took part. “I loved musicals when I was little, and that’s definitely where my interest started, Moyer said. “During high school, I was lucky enough to have some teachers who really challenged us at both my school and at the local theater. I started doing a lot

more Shakespeare and other classic plays, getting much more serious about the craft of making theater. After high school, Moyer obtained a bachelor’s degree in theater arts with a minor in religious studies from Drew University in Madison, N.J. She also completed actor training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art and earned a master’s degree from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. “The year I spent doing conservatory actor training at LAMDA was a pretty amazing learning experience, but funnily when I came back, I was most excited to apply what I had learned to directing, Moyer said. “That’s when I started more actively

pursuing a directing path. Ultimately, it was this path and desire to direct that led her to spending time in New York, France and to eventually moving to Philadelphia just more than three years ago. After spending the first two years living in West Philly, Moyer transitioned again to Point Breeze and now resides in Pennsport where she plans to remain indefinitely. “I’m on a quiet, friendly street and I like that the area is homey and safe, as well as only a few blocks from a park, Moyer said. “There’s such a nice community of theater artists in South Philadelphia that it felt like such a great area to settle in. It made a lot of sense, and I already felt pretty comfortable from spending time with so many friends

Help for stuttering is available

1ZO`WÂż QObW]\ \SSRSR To the Editor: On Friday, April 7, I received a call from the Harrisburg office of state Rep. William Keller asking me to issue a clarification of a letter I submitted last week (“Against the Billâ€?) about House Bill 685, which would effectively shut down the distribution of the South Philly Review. Apparently, there has been a serious misreading and grave misunderstanding. Let me make this perfectly clear: The primary sponsor of House Bill 685 is state Rep. Angel Cruz of District 180. There are also two co-sponsors - state Rep. Donna Bullock of District 195 and state Rep. Vanessa Lowery Brown of District 190. The bill was introduced on March 3, 2017 and has not yet come up for a vote. There is a strong doubt that it ever will. Keller’s office wanted me to state emphatically, that he is not only NOT a cosponsor of Bill 685 but is also emphatically AGAINST its passage. The only reason I mentioned his name is because he is my representative, and I called his office to tell him of my objection to the bill. If any reader wants to contact the HB 685 sponsor, state Rep. Cruz, his numbers are 215-291-5647 and 215-291-5443. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

aving become one of the most well known panhellenic dance marathons across the country, Penn State University’s “THON has helped raise funds and awareness for the fight against childhood cancer since 1973. In trying to re-create this event at the high school level, Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School hosted a “Mini THON on Thursday, April 6 with the goal of raising $15,000 for the fight against childhood cancer. Ryan Hewitt, student council vice president, approached the administration with his dance marathon proposal at the end of the previous school year. School President Bruce Robinson granted approval for the school to host the event during the following school year. “It seemed like a no brainer; raise money for a cure and bring our students together to boost our school spirit at the same time, Ciarra Bianculli, the student activities assistant, Mini THON advisor and an English teacher at the school, said. “We have been working very hard to meet our goal of $15,000 since August of 2016. Bianculli explained the school’s expectations for the event were pretty high because its senior student advisors wanted the event to not only mean something to the kids and families who would benefit from Four Diamonds,

a charitable organization that’s mission is to overcome childhood cancer by providing care, support and research to children treated at Penn State Children’s Hospital, but to the administration, students, staff, faculty, alumni and community of Neumann Goretti as well. In working to reach its goal of $15,000, the school additionally hosted multiple inschool fundraisers organized by members of the school’s newly formed Mini THON club. These fundraising efforts included “canning at an Eagles game in October, hosting the first “Mr. Neumann Goretti in February and launching a donor drive page in March. “We wanted to show everyone around us how having an event like this in a small school can make a difference, Bianculli said. “We received $6,000 in online donations in just one month. It is amazing to see how many people are willing to donate to such an important cause. After months of planning, preparation and promotion, the Mini THON hosted approximately 135 students in the school’s gymnasium from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. on the night of the event. By its conclusion, the school surpassed its goal by raising $18,141.30. “Mini THON was so much fun, senior class president Camrin Neiss said. “It was awesome to see so many students come together for an important cause while enjoying themselves at the same time. As student council president, it made me really excited to see so many students take a stand. SPR

D;MI BATTLE OF THE BULGE continued from page 1 we can to get the monument established,’ Peterson said. “Since then, we’ve been caretaking some funds from the Battle of the Bulge Association for the monument, and as of January’s financial statement, we have $8,038. Since the beginning of the year, $3,333 has been added to the fund, and the American Legion will hold the money in its account with a separate line number until the monument is ready for construction to commence, according to Peterson. The design that has been put forth for consideration is based on a photograph, and features a bronze soldier behind a blown out piece of wall with grenades and ammo pouches scattered behind him. The dimensions of the wall would be 12 feet wide and 12 feet high, with a five-foot wide base. “I’m pretty proud of what the artist came up with, Peterson said. “We put placemarks on layout for areas in which to put information. Certainly, there would be a story about what the Battle of the Bulge was, and what its significance is to a 15-year-old kid who’s on a field trip to the Franklin Institute. Peterson said the project could cost as much as $80,000. The total would include $24,000 for the cap, tablet base and the rubble, $2,500 for the shipping of 19 tons of granite and $33,000 for the bronze statue and foxhole. Other costs would include plaque-work - which increases in price with images, pictures and engravings - and any other costs the city might incur preparing the site. If necessary funds are secured, Peterson believes the city will donate the cost of the prep work for the site. Additionally, Battle of the Bulge Association member Mike Ciquero, a 90-year-old Rockledge resident and second-generation veteran along with his father and two brothers, is making maps of where members of the Delaware Valley, Lehigh Valley and Baltimore live, and will be selling them to gather additional funds for the monument. “There’s so much history in the Battle of the Bulge, and its veterans are fading fast, Ciquero said. Ciquero wasn’t the only member of the association at the meeting to verbalize his wish to see the battle memorialized. Alex Kane, a 97-year-old Kensington native, said he still remembers how horrible the battle was, but believes it is important for people to understand what he and his fel-

low servicemen experienced. Over the years, he has developed many friendships with other members of the Battle of the Bulge Association, who, he said, also wish to see the memorial established. He called approximately 31 members the Tuesday before the meeting to remind them to attend and hear updates about the project’s future. For the organization, one influential step in proceeding with the project has been gaining the involvement and support of City Council. Previously, the Battle of the Bulge Association had been in contact with the only military veteran currently serving, Councilman David Oh. Councilman Al Taubenberger is now assisting with the project. “We met with Councilman Al Taubenberger on March 16 to discuss Aviator Park and walked the ground, Peterson said. “He is very excited and thinks it’s a great location [for the monument]. Aviator Park is right out the front door of the Franklin Institute, and is adjacent to Logan’s Circle. Aviator Park is home to a World War I monument highlighting veterans who were pilots, which is where it gets its name. It also contains the “All Wars Memorial To Colored Soldiers and Sailors, honoring the service of African American soldiers up to World War I. Peterson and Taubenberger saw the site as extremely fitting for a World War II memorial, especially when the war involved 16.2 million veterans. During the Battle of the Bulge, which took place from Dec. 16, 1944 to Jan. 25, 1945, approximately 20,000 soldiers were killed, according to the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge in Arlington, Va. “There’s literally no dedicated monument to World War II in the City of Philadelphia, and yet our city gave more troops than many other areas of the country and they should be remembered, said Gary Lambert, chapter president. “This chapter of the Battle of the Bulge Association was very active for several decades in putting monuments in every city around the country that had national conventions, but we never managed to have a convention here so we need to get a monument here. Peterson said he is waiting to hear back from City Council for word on final project approval. Once the city approves the project, construction can begin almost immediately and should take no more than a year to complete. SPR For additional information on the memorial project, contact Peterson at editorpost405@gmail.com.

The news was officially announced earlier this week. He was selected through fan voting conducted on phillies.com. The four-time Phillies All-Star and member of the 1980 World Series championship team said he is honored by the news. “My baseball years in Philadelphia were amazing, not just because we won it all in 1980 and came close in 1983, but also because the fans welcomed me from day one,â€? Rose, who become the 39th member of this elite group of Phillies, said. “The team’s great ownership and talented roster attracted me to Philadelphia as a free agent. I knew we could experience great success.â€?

The news of Rose’s induction is worthy of a brief trip down memory lane. We are talking about one of the most popular players in Phillies history. He joined the organization as a free agent in December ’78, and wore the red and white pinstripes through the ’83 season. The Phils enjoyed one of their more successful runs with Rose around. The fiveyear stint included two World Series appearances (’80 amd ’83), with the 1980 win over the Kansas City Royals still ranking as one of the greatest moments in Phillies history. The team also won a division championship in ’81. His individual accolades are equally as impressive, with breaking the National League hits record on Aug. 10, 1981 topping the highlights. In ’79, he led the league in onbase percentage (.418) and singles (159). The on-field ceremony will take place before the Aug. 12 game against the New York Mets. The festivities will kick off on Aug. 11 when Rose is honored at the annual alumni luncheon taking place inside the Diamond Club.

D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 Scarlett were required to eat a full meal before going to parties because it was considered unladylike to do anything more than nibble later at the party. The role of women in our society has changed dramatically since then and expanded exponentially during my lifetime. Many men have been slow to adjust. Guys in South Philly have arguably been even slower to change. And I find it not so farfetched that a future Scarlett O’Hara won’t need a Rhett Butler in her life. The role of women has changed dramatically over my lifetime. My father would not allow my mother to work or drive a car. She desperately wanted to do both, but she gave in to his male pride. Dad felt that a man whose wife worked was a man who couldn’t support his wife. A man whose wife drove a car was a man who was not protective enough of his wife. In short, that man was not a man at all. My mother complained bitterly, but she believed that her role was to respect her husband’s wishes. Their relationship was not much different from those between most husbands and wives of their era. Their marriage lasted 47 years. The right to vote did not come easily for women. That’s well-documented. When my parents were married in 1937, my mother already had the right to vote, but that did not stop my father from pulling the lever in the voting booth for her. She was not happy about that, I might add. After she expressed outrage at his actions in the voting booth, he never made the same mistake again. Perhaps out of defiance, my mother registered Democrat while my father was a staunch Republican. She was as interested in politics, if not more so, as he was. Much to my shame, I also tried doing the same thing the first time my wife and I voted together. I can tell you that I haven’t done it since. Wives and husbands are not allowed in the voting booth together anymore. That’s a good thing for both. Women of my era were not expected to attend college. Women were expected to graduate high school. Get a typing job. Marry a good wage earner. Raise a family. Most of the women I met while attending Temple University in the late 1950s were Jewish. But the expectations for them, as I found out later from Jewish friends, was

N southphillyreview.com

much the same. Many, if not most, Jewish women had the same goal - to meet and marry a good husband - just at a professional level. When I went to work at the Defense Personnel Support Center (also known as the Quartermaster) in the mid-1960s, women executives were almost non-existent. It was an axiom in our personnel office that if you wanted a great clerk-typist, you hired one of the many “girls” graduating from St. Maria Goretti. Many of those women wound up running the office for their male bosses, but without their bosses’ salary. Much of that unjust circumstance has, thankfully, changed since then. Women outnumber their male counterparts attending college today by a staggering 25 percent. During my career, the federal government began offering its clerks an opportunity to attend college tuitionfree. I would like to say that led to equality in the workplace where I was employed. It helped, but there was and is still male resistance to female executives, just as there is in other career fields dominated by men. Ask Hillary Clinton. Women were thought to be taking jobs from men. It was men, not women, who were “supposed to be” the primary wage earners in a family. Women who competed successfully against men for top jobs were too ambitious - substitute the “B” word for ambitious. Women are dependent less on men to raise families today. Single parenthood is no longer as frowned upon as it once was. Adoption and scientific breakthroughs in fertilization have allowed women to become parents without men. Men ought to ask themselves why so many women choose to raise families without them. I mentioned earlier in this column that I thought the problem is becoming especially acute in our area. Many South Philadelphia men have become slow to adjust to the new reality. They don’t like that the women they meet are often more educated than they are. They have trouble dealing with their “changed” women. Tragically, marriages fall apart. Too many young men around here exist in a 1950s bubble. They are like Rip Van Winkle waking up to a changed world in which they don’t have a place. They wait and dream of a return to “the good old days,” but the good old days will not return. Those days were not so good, especially for women. Guys badly need a wake-up call. If you stay asleep, you risk becoming obsolete. A>@

aving lived in many cities across the globe, Claire Moyer has always considered herself to be a bit of a wanderer.

It made a lot of sense, and I already felt pretty comfortable from spending time with so many friends

;DJ;HJ7?DC;DJ in the area. She explained that, since there are just a lot of actors, designers and directors also living in the area, from a practical level it makes her balance between work and life outside of work easier. She noted her South Philly residence has made scheduling meetings and rehearsals more convenient, and she has witnessed the community as a whole be very close and supportive of each other both professionally and personally. IN MAKING A name for herself among fellow arts enthusiasts in her newest city, Moyer became the associate director and literary manager for Inis Nua and has been directing for the company during its last two seasons. “The company had been recommended to me due to my experience in the U.K. since Inis Nua produces new plays from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, she said. “I worked with the company’s artistic director, Tom Reing, as an assistant director and dramaturg on a few projects, and we built a great working relationship which developed into a position with the company.

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

After seeing a performance of “Swallow at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2015, Reing brought the script before Moyer to review. She became interested in the piece for a number of reasons and ultimately decided to pursue an Inis Nua premiere of the show. “I found the story really moving and was excited by the challenge of directing it, Moyer said. “This play is about empathy, about learning to give other people space for their own struggles while being kind to ourselves in the same way. Although as the show’s director she was initially intrigued by this piece because it spends a lot of time exploring the inner lives of its characters, she added it is a challenge to make the performance feel active and alive in that context. Another existing challenge involves the planning and prep work for the show. “I am constantly working toward a deadline, and once that deadline is reached on opening night, I am done, Moyer said. “I don’t get to change anything after that, so I’ve spent months planning and prepping and working toward something, and then

it’s out of my hands. The actors and stage manager take the show from there, and I have to trust them and trust that I have done my work up until that point. Although Moyer added the reality of a career in the performing arts is not by any means easy, with freelance busy periods and dry spells creating a delicate work balance, she remains drawn to the varied nature of each new project. “Each new project is different and varied; it never gets boring, she said. In embarking on her newest project “Swallow, the director says it is made especially unique by its poetic, rather than literal, nature. She added the performance highlights the characters’ stories as they exist in an emotional, rather than everyday reality. “I am drawn to intimate portraits of humanity, particularly stories of women, Moyer said. “I also like plays that are theatrical in that they are meant to be performed on the stage but don’t necessarily resort to spectacle. Meaning she likes stories that are written to be performed live, she added the live ele-

ment presents the opportunity for performers to connect in the same room with their audience for a completely different experience. Another benefit of a live performance, in her opinion, is it asks the audience to become engaged. “I tend toward plays that seek to create the immediate and human connection that film and TV don’t offer, as well as to seek to do so in a way that focuses on the simplicity and importance of human connection, Moyer said. How about joining hundreds of others — strangers and friends — for a Bunny Hop down South Street? While it may sound crazy, this fun-for-all activity is a big part of a longstanding Philly holiday tradition. It’s one of the many highlights to the 86th Annual Easter Promenade, where a crowd of thousands will fill the streets — many wearing bonnets and bunny ears — for a memorable celebration. The parade, which kicks off at 12:30 p.m., will start at the corner of Passyunk Avenue and South Street and continue down to Headhouse Square on Second Street. Henri David, who has been a fixture of

the parade for more than two decades, is back as the master of ceremonies, which includes leading the Bunny Hop down South Street, “It’s just so much fun, and it’s for all ages. We get all of the families involved, he said. Like next month’s Kentucky Derby, fashion plays a huge role in this annual tradition. No, Ryan Seacrest is not going to be standing at the corner of Second and South asking people “Who are you wearing? Instead, children and adults can enter to be crowned Best Dressed, Best South Street Razzle Dazzle or Best Easter Bonnet. Even pets can win big if he or she is looking spiffy. Celebrity judges will announce the winners in 12 categories (Best Dressed Little Boy/Girl, Young Boy/Girl, Teen Boy/Girl, Woman, Man, Family, Pet, plus Best Easter Bonnet and South Street Razzle Dazzle). Loud and colorful attire is encouraged. As the master of ceremonies, David

looks forward to dressing the part. He said his outfit will be “large, fun and silly. “I want people in the last row to be able to see me, he said. “I want them to say, ‘Who is that guy and what is he wearing.’ This free family event will also include special appearances by the Easter Bunny, Mr. and Mrs. Cottontail and others. Patrons will also be able to enjoy live music, candy and other egg-citing surprises. Those looking to do the brunch thing, plenty of the Headhouse Square area eateries will have special menus. David is one of many who is looking forward to another Easter Sunday on South Street. “I love it, he said. “I think with Easter, more than anything else, it’s the kids smiling from ear to ear. A>@ For more information on the Easter Promenade, including restaurant information, visit southstreet.com or call 215413-3713.

I

t looks like spring is here to stay. However, if a sudden cold spurt returns, do not blame your favorite local community newspaper, as predicting weather patterns is not part of our job description. Here’s an idea: Remove the cover from the barbecue for that first cookout. While you’re at it, think about baking a cake for a sweet finish to this memorable meal. We recommend going with Kathleen Valle’s Pina Colada Cake, with or without the rum. The Grays Ferry resident simply described this offering as “a good one.

Soulful songstress Shakera Jones is one of a slew of talented acts headed to Philly this April for the annual Center City Jazz Festival.

pril in Philly is flowers, seasonably warmer temperatures and outdoor happy hours. It’s also Jazz Appreciation Month, highlighted by a single-day celebration of sound on April 29. This year’s Center City Jazz Festival is a potent distillation – a jolt of heady port from an already intoxicating vintage wine served at five different venues across Center City. This year, Time (1315 Sansom St.), Fergie’s Pub (1214 Sansom St.), Franky Bradley’s (320 Chancellor St.), Chris’ Jazz Café (1421 Sansom St.) and Milkboy on Chestnut Street (1100 Chestnut St.), from 1-8pm. Created as a Kickstarter project by Ernest Stuart, a Temple University alum and avid trombonist, the scope of the sixth installment of the event encompasses all micro-divisions of America’s untamed classical music in a fashion similar to its artistic director’s musical career. As soloist-band leader, or as one-time member of Brooklyn-Bhangra act Red Baraat, Stuart has jumped from straight-ahead standards, be-bop, free jazz, samba, salsa and beyond. So too do the acts that fill this year’s festival, as well as its five previous iterations. “CCJF is important because it throws a spotlight on a genre of music that's become increasingly marginalized [while at the same time] recognizing and highlighting the depth and diversity of jazz talent in this city,” said Keith Destefano, the

The legendary jazz sound of Monnette Sudler heads to Philly this April for the annual Center City Jazz Festival. leader of jazz band, Puzzlebox. “It shows there’s a vital community of artists committed to the form and possibly introduces this music to new audiences.” Stuart’s goals for the initial Center City Jazz Fest started from a place of hurt, then healing. “My incentive was the first closing of Ortlieb’s Jazz Haus, a homebase to many of the city’s jazz musicians whom I loved,” Stuart said. “Things were not looking up for jazz in Philly at that time, so I decided to do something to help.”

Saxophonist Tom Moon attended the inaugural fest and was hooked. “I went thinking I'd catch a few people in the afternoon for a couple of hours, but instead ended up there all day and night, seeing artists I knew and artists I'd only heard about the day before,” Moon recalled. “Even when the venues were crowded, the vibe was low-key and chill.” He added: “This event works for a couple of key reasons: The performances happen in clubs, not concert halls – that's big, since so much of this music developed in these kinds of settings. There's something truly wonderful about seeing an intimate performance in the upstairs room at Fergie’s and then returning to the street and being magnetically drawn to some amazing group through the open windows at Time.” Now, after several years of sold-out events, Stuart claims that venues aren't as skeptical as they were when CCJF first began. With events running without a hitch, clubs are willing to do what it takes to accommodate CCJF’s needs. As do the 20 bands and sound studios that ensure the events run on time, a communal vibe that makes CCJF into as much of a party as it is a celebration of music. “There’s a social aspect to all this that doesn't always happen at high-dollar festivals or, for that matter, in other major cities,” notes Moon, who sees the musicians of Philadelphia as endlessly curious and supportive, and numbers himself amongst their ranks. “They're out every night and will be out to soak up what's going on at this festival. In one very real sense, their energy makes the festival.” For veteran Philly jazz musicians such as Moon (whose Ensemble Novo plays the fest) and guitarist Monnette Sudler, they see the CCJF as central to the community that thrives within that six-block circle. “Since it’s based [right in Center City], it will attract visiting jazz lovers to attend,” says Sudler. “I believe the jazz community is buzzing. Promoters are promoting it. More festivals are sprouting up. There are a few jazz clubs that are well known and many underground spots as well. Musicians are plentiful. Unfortunately, the ratio-of-musicians-playing-toplaces-to-work is not balanced. But the love of music is there and people are educating themselves on many levels.” While Moon points out that the “old-heads are marvels and the young players are marvels in their own way,” Jon Smith, the lead for the band Below Zero will feature as one of CCJF’s “young heads” for 2017. Smith, currently recording a double album for winter release, recognizes that fact and raises the stakes. “The more established musicians have taken the newer musicians under their wing and helped us along,” said Smith. “Most of my influences are Philly musicians and in my opinion we have the best musicians in the world. This festival is a show of that strength.” Q TWITTER: @ADAMOROSI

Are the Eagles looking better on paper? WR Alshon Jeffery If Jeffery returns to his Pro Bowl form from 2013 and ’14, when he was one of the best wide receivers in the game, then the Eagles will be a much-improved offense. Jeffery has a huge catch radius, excellent hands and the ability to go up and get the jump balls. If he doesn’t, well, the Eagles are going to struggle in the passing game.
