The Red Silk Pajama Incident

I

touched on this subject in my column “Confessions of a public school dummy” on Dec. 13, 2017. Here is the back story on the red silk pajama incident. It is one of life’s axioms that we remember the indignities we suffer more intensely than our successes. So it is that we visit that sunny spring day when at the age of 13, this public school student was to receive the holy sacrament of Confirmation. The scene: Epiphany of Our Lord Church at 11th and Jackson, a lovely, dignified old church. I didn’t live within the boundaries served by the Epiphany, but both my grandparents did and I gave the church their address. I spent Sunday mornings after church at my grandmother’s house. Grandmom made great meatballs – which I preferred without gravy – a vinegary salad, pasta with melted butter instead of gravy and the piece de resistance, a slice of her homemade ice box cake. My physique resembled that of Spanky in the “Our Gang” comedies, a testament to grandmom’s superb culinary skills. The proximity of the church to grandmom’s house was my See CARDELLA, page 11>>

Candidate for lieutenant governor Ray Sosa speaks at the political candidates forum in Point Breeze last Tuesday.

Political hopefuls pitch Point Breeze voters George W. Childs Elementary School hosts candidates forum By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

hird Congressional District candidates Kevin Johnson (D) and Bryan Lieb (R) as well as Pennsylvania lieutenant governor candidates Ray Sosa (D) and incumbent Mike Stack (D) attended a political candidates forum at George W. Childs Elementary

School in Point Breeze last Tuesday night. Additionally, Diane O’Dwyer, a surrogate for Kathi Cozzone’s (D) lieutenant governor campaign, and Vince Rongione, a surrogate for Nina Ahmed’s (D) lieutenant governor campaign, were also present. Candidates and surrogates were each provided a chance to give brief opening and closing speeches as well as answer questions from the audience. The lone exception to this rule, however, was

Stack, who kicked off the event by giving a brief introduction to the audience about himself without taking questions. He left the event early to attend another event elsewhere in the state. Every candidate for every position on the ballot in Point Breeze for the May 15 primary election was invited to the event, according to Thera Martin, the WURD radio personality who moderated the forum. Op-Ed Philadelphia Parking Authority aims to aid city, says official

W

hen it comes to criticizing the Philadelphia Parking Authority’s annual $50 million payment to the city and School District of Philadelphia, it’s important to look for the facts – and not at a decade-old myth. The original law “promising $45 million” to Philadelphia schools each year was repealed in 2004 and replaced with a new law that “restricted” the PPA from sending any money to the schools until a $25 million threshold contribution to the city was first met. Complicating the “$25 million to the city first” provision was an added proviso that should the PPA’s annual on-street revenue increase, so, too, would the percentage of revenue correspondingly increase that must go to the city first. Case in point is the current fiscal year. The PPA will send $40 million to the city first before a single dollar can go to the schools. This statutory formulabased distribution provision was recently criticized by Pennsylvania’s auditor general as being to the “immense detriment of the School District.” The PPA coordinates it operations with the city, whose Finance Department routinely reviews our budgets and expenses. The PPA is audited every year by an outside independent auditing firm, including three in 2017 alone. With more than 1,100 employees, we operate on an unheard-of 40 perfect profit margin – returning over $110 million combined to the city, state, school district and the National Park Service each year. Based on the 2004 legal requirements, the PPA will give the city over $40 million this year with another $10 million going to the schools from our on-street operation alone – constituting .016 percent of the school district’s overall annual $3 billion budget. The formula for how the PPA distributes its revenue is dictated by state law. Should the law change, the PPA will distribute the revenue as directed. Either way, the city will have $50 million to fund schools from the PPA. The PPA is committed to doing its part to help the city and school district meet their respective funding needs. That’s why we proposed establishing a 50-cent surcharge on every ride provided by transportation network companies – better known to the average rider as Ubers and Lyfts – that currently operate in the city. Last year alone, more than 20,000 registered Uber and Lyft vehicles provided an estimated 90,000 rides a day in the city. The new TNC law requires the Parking Authority to regulate these services – including the removal of illegal operators, investigation of consumer complaints, inspection of

vehicles, monitoring driver qualifications and many other duties. Funding for this oversight and regulation was cut in half last year, leaving a significant gap in the PPA’s ability to oversee the TNC industry. That’s why the PPA proposed replacing the existing funding allocation with a new regulatory fee of 50 cents per trip, which will be added to each taxi and TNC trip in the city. This will create parity in assessment methods between taxis and TNCs, making it easier for taxi owners to reinvest in their business. This change will also adequately fund regulatory operations and eliminate the need to audit the TNCs’ books. Because two-thirds of TNC assessment dollars go to the school district, funding will increase significantly under this proposal from $3 million to $11 million a year. The PPA remains committed to efficiency, transparency and doing the best job possible to serve the people of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties. We’re looking for ‘Rising Stars’

I

t’s that time of year in which high school seniors are finalizing college decisions. Younger students are likely proud of the strides they have made in the classroom from September to now. Others may have faced personal hardships that presented unexpected challenges in and out of the classroom. No matter what the story is, each of these students is very deserving of recognition. Teachers, counselors and administrators, do you have a Rising Star in your classroom? If yes, it’s time to share the stories of these first graders through high school seniors you feel are worthy of Rising Star consideration. The South Philly Review and Grays Ferry-based Young Chances Foundation are once again teaming up to recognize your standout candidates. The only requirement is the student must reside in South Philly or attend a South Philly school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 Zip Codes. Parents and guardians, we know you believe your child is well deserving of being included on this list, but nominations need to come from the school.

Ruby Buffet

Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are both strong points, but not the only criteria being taken into consideration. We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. If you have a Rising Star who fits the bill, send us a nomination letter, 250 to 350 words, describing what makes your candidate stand out from the pack. What is the reason(s) for nominating this student? What academic achievements has this student earned during the 2017-18 school year? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? These are just a few questions meant to help get the conversation started. All of the nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee, with the winners appearing in the special June 6 Rising Stars edition. Please submit nominations by Tuesday, April 30. Nominations can be submitted via email, news@ southphillyreview.com.

CANDIDATES: Hopefuls weigh in <<Continued from page 1 Stack, who has served as Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor since 2015, emphasized his Philadelphia roots during his speech. “I was born and bred in Philadelphia,” Stack, who earned his bachelor’s degree from LaSalle and law degree from Villanova, said. “As a Philadelphian and as a lieutenant governor, I try to stand up for the city, and I think I’ve been very successful and I want to continue to do that.” Stack said despite Philadelphia’s economic influence on the state, the city has been “pushed out of the influential areas – whether it’s with being the chairpeople of committees or in other areas,” he said. One of the most important aspects of his job, he said, was his role with the state’s Board of Pardons, which he chairs. “I have taken that role very seriously in trying to provide second chances for so many people who made a mistake years ago, but do not deserve to have their entire life ruined because of these mistakes,” he said. “Many times they’re related to addiction or just bad timing, a bad situation in their lives and if someone pays that price, I feel it’s unfair in a lot of ways that that person is a good citizen and is doing all the things to be a good citizen that they have a criminal record for the rest of their lives.” Sosa used his time to stress the importance of wellfunded education. “We have some high school students graduating with a sixth-grade reading level,” he said. “We can’t have that.” Sosa said the way school districts are funded in Pennsylvania is unfair. In 2016, the state passed a bill to take into consideration a variety of factors when distributing funding to school districts. Among them were the number of children in the district who live in poverty, the number of children enrolled in charter schools, and wealth of the district. However, the bill has been criticized by many for not addressing the state’s problem of having the most inequitable funding for poor students in the nation, as per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. The state contributes a relatively small amount of funding toward the districts, leaving it to local municipalities to make up the difference. As a result, the wealthy municipalities can afford to make their schools better, while the poorer municipalities cannot. “It’s just not fair right now,” Sosa said. “And that’s why we have schools that are severely underfunded. We have teachers who have to buy their own supplies.” Rongione stressed Ahmed’s immigrant background. Ahmed was born in Pakistan. “When she came to the United States, she did it in the full understanding of what it means to be free and what it means to have a vote,” he said. “She has absolutely no fear when it comes to special interests, when it comes to career politicians … those are not things that intimidate her.” Rongione also stressed Ahmed wants to end the effects of mass incarceration, saying people “who have served their debt to society deserve a second chance.” Rongione also talked about Ahmed’s status as a

woman of color in an attempt to appeal to the mostly minority audience. “Who can you count on to stand up in that room for you?” he asked. “Wouldn’t you rather have a person of color who’s more familiar with the community? Don’t we all deserve that kind of person at the table where these decisions are made? So simply by her presence the conversation will change.” Ahmed also supports a $15 per-hour minimum wage. O’Dwyer, surrogate for lieutenant governor candidate Cozzone, who is a three-term county commissioner in Chester County, stressed Cozzone’s experience and gender. “Gov. Wolf needs someone with the experience to get to work on day one to support and advance his policies, and Kathi can be that hard worker,” she said, also adding “women need better representation in Harrisburg, and Kathi is the only woman in the race who has elected governor executive experience.” Congressional candidate Johnson used his time mostly to talk about creating better paying jobs and health care. “Health care should not be a privilege,” he said. “Health care is an American right, and I’m going to fight for that right for every person.” Johnson also said he’s in favor of a $15 per-hour minimum wage. Lastly, congressional candidate Lieb encouraged locals in the heavily Democratic city of Philadelphia to be open-minded about his Republican label. “There’s a stigma that Republicans don’t like to listen to anyone besides Republicans. Let me be very clear: I’m running a campaign that’s going to listen to you. If you care and love Philadelphia and want to move our city forward, I’m going to listen to you whether you’re a Democrat, an independent or a Republican. That is not political talk. That is from the heart.” When asked if he’d be willing to accept funding from the NRA, Lieb said “yes.” “If the NRA approaches me and they want to do things that help support our community, then I’m going to listen,” he said, noting he believed in Americans’ right to bear arms. “They’re protecting our Second Amendment, and each of us have a right to the Second Amendment.” However, he did say the country should “have a more stringent policy to obtain a firearm.” He also stated he would work to enact term limits in an effort to do away with “career politicians,” and he is against sanctuary cities. “I’m not for sanctuary cities because why are we protecting people who are here illegally?” he asked rhetorically. The event was sponsored by Neighbors in Action, The Point Breeze Community Development Corporation, East Point Breeze Neighbors, Neighbors Invested in Childs Elementary School, Washington Avenue Property Owners Association, South of South Neighborhood Association and the South Philadelphia Homes Organization.

he 1st, 3rd and 17th police districts will hold their first annual South Division Memorial Bike Ride at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, to honor fallen officers throughout South Philadelphia. “The three districts in South Philly thought it would be a good way for our [Police District Advisory Council] and our command to do together, said the 17th district’s Community Relations Officer John O’Connor. While the event is meant to honor all fallen officers in the area, three in particular will be recognized on the day of the event: Charles Knox from the first district, whose end of watch was August 30, 1992; Ronald Trumbette from the 3rd district, whose end of watch was June 23, 1975; and Harry Davis from the 17th district, whose end of watch was April 6, 1970. The bike ride will start at 1800 Washington Ave. and go through all three districts. “Our honor guard is going to be there for the start, O’Connor said, “and we will have someone

Chick’s Gastropub to mark first year with CHOP benefit

S

Eatery celebrating business milestone with April 22 event to aid cancer research By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

outh Philly’s Chick’s Gastropub is celebrating its one-year anniversary by having a fundraiser for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s pediatric cancer research on Sunday, April 22, from noon to 7 p.m. “We have the top-of-the-line of people in the city [as far as] DJs and bands, and we’re having a big outdoor festival and, of course, entertainment,” said

Philip Narducci, the bar’s owner. “We wanted to give something back to the community.” The event will be held on Washington Avenue between 18th and 19th streets; according to Narducci, police will have the block barricaded off. Narducci calls his bar a “pioneer” of the gentrifying Point Breeze neighborhood, and he’s particularly grateful to the neighbors for welcoming him into the neighborhood. “All these neighbors have been with us from day one,” he said. “People have

been good to us.” The event will feature live entertainment from DJ Jerry Blavat, DJ Johnny Looch, the Steve Calabrese Band, recording artist Felicia Punzo and more. A 20- by 30-foot stage is going to be built for the event for the artists to perform on. In addition to the music, the event will feature a Budweiser bar truck donated by Penn Beer, which will have a full bar, TVs with satellite and draft beer. A variety of food will be served at the event, including roast beef, roast pork and pizza.

Neither Philip Narducci nor his wife Gina have children, but that didn’t stop them from wanting to do something to benefit the lives of kids in need. “We see these commercials – these children, they’re all fighting for their lives,” Narducci said. Chick’s is a gastropub with 24 beers on draft and an additional 30 or 40 in bottles and cans. The menu is diverse; it features Italian dishes, Spanish dishes, Greek dishes and about 15 pizza specials. It’s located at 1807 Washington Ave.

“Its an industrial atmosphere, but the vibe in here is incredible,” said Narducci. “People say they love it here and that they feel like we’re family here.” The bar won a Zagat award for being one of the hottest new restaurants in the city only about five months after it opened. “People enjoy coming here and our customer base,” boasted Narducci. “You couldn’t handpick a better crowd.” To donate to the fundraiser visit chop. donordrive.com and type “Chick’s” into the search bar.

n Sunday, May 6, the Lovely Baptist Church on 7th and Snyder will celebrate its 100th year of existence. “It’s been a church that really stays with the Bible, said Willia Mae Brown, the church’s longest-serving member. “A lot of churches have folded up but Lovely remains. The 86-year-old Brown has been coming to the Lovely Baptist Church for the past 70 years - ever since she was 15 years old. “Lovely is a beautiful church to belong to, she said. In honor of the church’s century of existence, a black tie banquet will be held April 28 in the church’s banquet hall. The banquet will feature catered food, music, praise dancing and speeches from ministers. The church’s secretary, Diana Collins, called the church “family oriented, and said it leaves people with the “freedom to worship God in a way that he should be worshipped. “If someone died in the neighborhood and that person didn’t have a church to have their service in, the doors were always open, she said. “Rev. [Wilbert] Crew would welcome anyone in. The doors were always open to accommodate people in the South Philadelphia area. Interestingly, Crew is one of only two pastors the church has ever had. Lovely was founded in

1918 by Pastor Nicholas Avent, who served asa pastor until his death in 1961. That’s when Crews took over, and he’s been serving as pastor for thei t past 57 years. “That says something right there, Brown saido of Crew. “Because [pastors] come and go. If the parishioners don’t care for them next thing youw know they’re gone. My pastor is not about money.s T So that’s another good thing about Lovely. While Brown loves her church, she said thatN it, like many churches, is striving to find ways tof T reach out to young people. “What we’re trying to do is to get more of them youth to come in so that they will learn about thep Bible, she said. “We want their opinions aboutt k what the children want from the church. In addition to the black tie banquet, the churcha will have a service on May 3 featuring the Rev.h Edgar Edwards from the Little David Baptistr Church at 7 p.m., and a Joy Night on May 4 at 7y a p.m., which will feature praise dancing and singw ing. B May 6 - the actual anniversary date - will feaa ture a service that begins at 11:30 a.m. At 3 p.m., m guest speaker Edward A. Thomas, pastor of New a Temple Baptist Church, will give a speech. t Tickets to the black tie catered affair on April a 28 cost $50. CARDELLA: Day doesn’t exactly go so smoothly We were told by the nuns that the sacrament of Confirmation meant that you were to become “a soldier of Christ. I must say that I had pacifistic leanings even back then. I never saw myself as a soldier in any way, as my Air Force drill instructors in later years would readily attest. I would have been a more likely candidate as a “coward for Christ. I knew Satan, and Satan had all the weapons on his side. He could hurl thunderbolts. Invoke fire and brimstone. Me – I had a good act of contrition. Vegas would’ve put the odds at 1,000-toone in favor of Satan. It’s likely they were already making book on the match at 10th and Wolf. Part of the Confirmation ceremony includes a question-and-answer session with the visiting archbishop who could randomly call on any of us for an answer, and we had better be ready with the correct answer. I’m not sure what would’ve happened if we couldn’t answer the question, but none of us wanted to invoke the wrath of the nuns who wielded their yardsticks like Morgan on “The Walking Dead. All seemed to go well until we were called to the altar to receive Communion. Maybe it was the motion of my getting up from the pew after kneeling. Maybe it was just meant to be. The red silk pajamas that were such a comfort guarding me from the itchy wool knickers suddenly betrayed me. I am inclined to think it was an act of Satan himself. After all, do you think it was a coincidence that the color of the pajamas was red? Whatever it was, as I kneeled at the altar with my back to the pews, the red silk pajamas slipped to my ankles beneath the knickers. My parents were mortified. The incident might have even prompted a blasphemy from the lips of the good sisters. No word on how Uncle John felt. I was unaware that my red silk pajamas had made an unscheduled appearance and was spared the embarrassment, perhaps proving that self-awareness is not always a good thing. It was the last time I ever wore knickers.

<<Continued from page 1 real motivation for receiving Confirmation at the Epiphany. My Uncle John was my Confirmation sponsor. The sponsor’s role is to walk spiritually through life with you. With Uncle John, that spiritual walk would likely be interrupted by a few card games along the way. I knew many of the other kids’ sponsors. I didn’t feel they were an especially spiritual group. If you had asked them their occupations, many of them would’ve responded, “a little of this and a little of that. The official uniform of the day for boys was a white shirt and navy pants. My mother saw no reason to go out and buy navy pants for the occasion. That was how I wound up wearing my Cousin Nick’s hand-me-down navy knickers. I cut quite a fancy figure in my knickers, if I do say so myself. There was just one problem – the knickers were made of 100 percent wool. Wool itches terribly, prompting me to protest vehemently. I didn’t want to suffer the itches. And, truth be told, I thought knickers were for little boys. I viewed long pants as a sign of incipient adulthood. My mother was having none of it. Her solution was for me to wear red silk pajamas under the wool knickers. Now you might say, surely you didn’t own silk pajamas at the age of 13? I confess that I don’t know if they were silk. The PJs could well have been polyester. But Mom always referred to them as being silk, and in looking back to that day, I see those pajamas as silk. Why would I even own pajamas, let alone silk pajamas at an age where I was on the threshold of puberty? Was I practicing for a career as the next Cary Grant? I think the answer is much simpler than that, although the factual answer has been lost in the passage of time. The pajamas were probably borrowed or handed down just like the knickers. Maybe they belonged to Uncle John, who always tried to be helpful in some way – and usually failed.

Wade rallies Heat to hold off Sixers in Game 2 of series By Al Thompson

Team mourns loss of Hal Greer

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Miami Heat were able to hold off a furious rally by the 76ers late in the fourth quarter and come away with a 113-103 win over Philadelphia on Monday, evening their Eastern Conference best-of-seven series at one game apiece. Game 3 takes place in Miami on Thursday. The Heat took a 16-point lead with 11:04 left in the fourth quarter on a cutting dunk by forward James Johnson. But the Sixers, led by guard Ben Simmons and forwards Ersan Ilyasova and Dario Saric, went on a 16-2 run to pull within two points at 98-96 on an Ilyasova putback with 4:29 left that had all 20,753 fans on their feet and in a frenzy at the Wells Fargo Center hoping their team would pull out a win. Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra made sure that didn’t happen. He put veteran guard Dwyane Wade back in the game and the future Hall of Famer made an immediate impact. The Sixers rebounded the ball on the ensuing Heat possession but Wade anticipated a pass to Saric, stole the ball and passed it to center Kelly Olynyk, who gave it back to Wade for a running dunk with 4:03 left. The Sixers never recovered. “The reason I was brought here was for a game like this,” said Wade, who returned to the Heat when the Cleveland Cavaliers traded him to Miami on Feb. 8. “When they cut it to two, to come back in the game and settle everything down. I’m glad I was able to do that.” Wade, who has come off the bench since his return, said he saw the Sixers use the same passing lane earlier in the game. “I watched that play go down earlier in the game when I was on the bench and when I was in the game,” Wade said. “I told myself if they do that play later, I’m going to steal it.” Wade scored a game-high 28 points and pulled down seven rebounds in 26 minutes. The loss snapped the 76ers’ 17-game winning streak, dating to March 13. It was the second-longest single-season streak in franchise history. The first quarter went much better for the Sixers Monday night, as they

The following was released Monday, April 16, by the Sixers: “The Philadelphia 76ers organization mourns the passing of Hal Greer, an NBA champion, Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer and team legend. Throughout his 15-year career with the Syracuse Nationals and Philadelphia 76ers, Greer solidified his place as one of the greatest basketball players ever. An NBA champion in 1967 and 10-time NBA All-Star, Greer’s legacy includes being the 76ers’ all-time leader in points, field goals, field goals attempted, games and minutes played, culminating in him being named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History in 1996. “Greer was the first player to have

In Game 1, the home team trailed, 35-29, after the opening quarter. To say the Sixers went cold in the second quarter would not do justice to how poorly they executed on offense and defense. Sloppy play and poor shooting plagued Philadelphia, as the Sixers were outscored 34-13 in the quarter, trailing by 14 at the half. The Sixers shot just 33.3 percent from the field, 11.1 percent from beyond the three-point arc. Philadelphia’s shooters produced 18 three-pointers in Game 1, but could muster only two treys on 18 attempts in the first half. Simmons, a Rookie of the Year candidate, recorded 24 points (10-17 FG), eight rebounds and eight assists in 39 minutes in Game 2. He admitted the second-quarter surge by Miami pretty much decided

the game. “The second quarter was definitely where they punched us in the mouth and we didn’t respond the right way,” Simmons said. “We brought it back, but it wasn’t enough. They were making shots, running their plays and, defensively, they did a great job.” The Sixers took 35 shots from beyond the arc for the game, making just seven. The Heat were much more physical Monday night, pressuring the Sixers on the perimeter. JJ Redick, who was 1-of-7 from the three-point line (11 points overall), talked what effect the lack of room given around the three-point line had. “I don’t know,” Redick said. “I felt like we had good threes, we shot good threes. I don’t know. I would have to look at the tape. Eighteen-for-28 is un-

sustainable and on the other end, I think a 2-for-18 first half is also an anomaly. Hopefully, it will balance back out. We’ll shoot high 30s, low 40s for the rest of the series.” Wade said the Heat played Game 1 like it was a regular season game. He said they wanted to play with more intensity and make the young players on the Sixers realize this is the NBA playoffs and make it a “Welcome to the playoffs” moment for Philadelphia. Sixers head coach Brett Brown was asked if this loss was an eye-opening game for his inexperienced players. “You can phrase it in a bunch of ways, but to me, it’s the reality of NBA basketball and it will only get harder,” Brown said. “Our guys will learn more about themselves than they’ve learned in the regular season for however long we play in the playoffs. We haven’t lost since March 13 and this game equals the NBA playoffs. This is a snapshot of what you should expect when a team is going to go down 2-0 if they are unable to find a win.” Brown also said the Heat played like they were desperate. Falling behind 2-0 in the series would be tough to come back from. Saric was asked about the Heat playing like a desperate team. “They were a totally different team than the first game,” said Saric, who scored 23 points, on 8-of-21 shooting.

his number retired by the 76ers organization when the team retired his No. 15 in 1976. To further celebrate his place in team history, Greer also became the first player to be honored with a sculpture on 76ers Legends Walk at the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex in 2017. “In addition to his historic contributions on the court, Greer will forever be remembered as a true gentleman who used the tremendous platform of basketball to uplift and inspire others. “We extend our deepest condolences and send our love to the Greer family during this difficult time. “The 76ers will celebrate Greer’s life and legacy at tonight’s game in South Philadelphia.”

“I think they tried to go over the screens all the time, tried to breathe down our necks. They really wanted to win this game. We were a little bit surprised first and second quarter. In the second half, we started to play, but it was already too late. For the next game, we have to have the same attitude as them.” Saric was asked if the team is looking forward to the return of all-star center Joel Embiid, who has been out with a concussion and a orbital fracture under his left eye suffered in a March 28 game against the New York Knicks. He missed the Sixers’ final eight regular season games and both playoff games. The outspoken center expressed his frustration on social media after the loss, saying he is “....sick and tired of being babied.” Brown admitted the Heat were starting to exploit his absence, especially with Simmons, who was pressured up and down the court all night. He did not have Embiid to dump the ball to. “Of course, Joel is an all-star,” Saric said. “We’re talking about a superstar in the league. We are missing him on every point defensively as well as offensively. Whether people pressure Ben or not pressure Ben, it doesn’t matter. When you have a guy like that on your team and he’s out, of course we’re missing him. I cannot wait for Joel to come back and help us.” Neither can Sixers fans.

EAGLES INSIDER

Key questions arise as post-Super Bowl LII season nears

T

he offseason conditioning program began for the Eagles on Monday at the NovaCare Complex, the official signal that 2018 is here. The Super Bowl? A not-too-distant memory for the players and coaches, but just that – a memory. It’s on to ’18 and with that the tall task of repeating as Super Bowl champions, something that has been done by eight teams in history, most recently the Patriots of 2003-2004. Here are Five Questions To Think About as the Eagles ramp up their preparation for 2018 and get ready for next week’s NFL draft ‌

How Will The Eagles Handle The QB Situation?

Barring any kind of end-of-thepreseason injury that requires another team to trade for a quarterback, it appears that Nick Foles will be an Eagle in 2018, giving the team as strong a

quarterback picture as any in the NFL. Carson Wentz continues his rehabilitation from knee surgery and while there is optimism that he will be ready for the regular season as scheduled, there is no defined timetable. All we know for sure is that, per head coach Doug Pederson, Wentz won’t take part in the spring onfield team drills. That means Foles and Nate Sudfeld will take the majority of the snaps. Both will benefit. And both will be ready for the opening game. Wentz? We’ll see. Don’t count him out for Game 1, that’s for sure.

What Are Realistic Areas To Address In The Draft? The Eagles have only six picks in the NFL Draft, although they are certainly prone to trade and acquire more selections. But the needs on this team are pretty clear: The Eagles need help at tight end, they could use another running back, a wide receiver isn’t out

of the question, a linebacker or two is probably on the “want list and a young safety to groom would be just fine. Oh, and who is the punter for this team? Cameron Johnston is, at the moment. Look him up.

Can The Eagles Repeat Their Super Bowl Chemistry? The locker room has changed, no question. Some big personalities are here – both defensive end Michael Bennett and wide receiver Mike Wallace lead the way – and they’ll have to fit into the culture here. The Eagles won the Super Bowl for a lot of reasons and maybe the most primary was the way the locker room meshed and the teamfirst attitude dominated.

Yeah, um, the Eagles have some muscle coming back from the injury list, and not just Wentz. Left tackle Jason Peters is the starter and, the Eagles say, still very much a star. Middle linebacker Jordan Hicks is a terrific player, but he’s been injured in two of his three NFL seasons. Safety Chris Maragos is on the comeback trail, too, and would be a huge boost to the special teams. In other words, the Eagles have a lot of good going on. Is it enough to get them into the rarified “repeat air of the NFL dynasties?

answer. Defensive end Derek Barnett needs to play a huge role. Cornerbacks Sidney Jones and Rasul Douglas must become big-time contributors. Wide receivers Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson have stiff competition for playing time but both are in the mix. Running back Donnel Pumphrey faces make-or-break time.

With party season on the way, food plan, prep ahead By Tracey Porpora FOR SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

L

ooking to host family and friends this spring and summer for special events that celebrate life’s most important moments? According to the experts at ShopRite’s catering department, it’s easier than you think. “Our goal is to help our customers make their party-planning process as simple and stress-free as possible,” says Lisa Pace-Standridge, catering marketing specialist at ShopRite. “Just because you are hosting a party doesn’t mean you have to do it all alone. Our team is here to assist customers with their needs – whether that means helping to plan the menu and cater an entire affair, or just provide a delicious sheet cake from our bakery, that’s what we’re all about.” Pace-Standridge says the key to party planning is, well, planning. “We understand that when you host a party, there’s a lot that goes into it. But our advice is to keep focused on the big picture. A party is a great time to gather with friends and family and enjoy each other’s company. The food is, of course, a big part of it, but the main idea is that you’re celebrating a special occasion together.” She says would-be party hosts are often daunted by the tasks of orchestrating an entire party from scratch, but with a little advance work, it can be a breeze. “The first step to great party planning is about putting together a guest list that works for you, then you can figure out a theme and create a budget that includes food, drinks and decorations,” she says. “If you’re not sure how much food you’ll need or what kind of menu will work best for your gathering, you can always ask a catering professional for help.” She suggests that if you have guests with specific dietary concerns, you can consult with one of the supermarket’s in-store registered dietitians to find options that will work with their needs. “Party planning is all about pulling together an event that you feel comfortable with. Your guests are going to be appreciative of whatever you do, and if they have a good time, you’re going to have a good time.” Other stress-busting tips she suggests are setting your table in advance, planning out your music, and recruiting family members to help with setup and breakdown. But more than anything, her best advice is simple. “Don’t stress out over getting every detail perfect,” she advises. “When you look back and realize you were able to feel like a guest at your own party, that’s when you’ll know your party was a success.” For more information on catering your next event at ShopRite, call 1-800-Shoprite or visit shoprite.com.
