Task Force responded to another fire outside 710 S. Fifth St. The fire was contained to trash debris, which was outside that location, and extended to a private vehicle parked outside, causing fire damage to the left rear of the vehicle. Video surveillance was recovered that shows an unknown male allegedly starting the fire by igniting the trash with what appears to be a lighter. The male then left the area on foot and was last seen north on Fifth Street, then west on Bainbridge Street. There were no reported injuries during this incident. Next, on Feb. 12, at approximately 4:25 a.m., on the 700 block of South Fourth Street, an unknown male was captured on surveillance video allegedly trying to open vehicle doors and looking at properties on the block. A short time later, the suspect returned, running in the opposite direction, and approximately 10 minutes later, a fire was observed in the rear of the Famous 4th Street Delicatessen. Engine 11 extinguished the fire, which caused cosmetic damage to the restaurant’s brick exterior, as well as melted phone lines. SPR Contact Lindsey Nolen at lnolen@newspapermediagroup.com.

Owner of John’s Roast Pork John Bucci never thought it was possible for a roast pork sandwich to taste better than the one made by his grandfather who opened their family shop in a wooden shack off Snyder Avenue in 1930. However, today, upgrading to what he jokes is a “cinderblock shack, the taste of the family’s iconic roast pork sandwich has found a way to become even better and has won the most votes for the best roast pork sandwich in South Philly. “My grandfather came to America from Italy with his roast pork recipe. It’s a hard meat to work with because it’s bland, but my mother always said simplicity is what makes it great, Bucci said. “We’ve gotten a $8,000 oven that cooks at constant low pressure and that has definitely added to the recipe. He added the way his family makes their roast pork involves a 2.5-day process in which they roast the pork, let it sit overnight in the fridge to cool, strain the gravy so the fat comes off, slice the pork through a meat slicer and ultimately marry the meat with the gravy. Although it’s a lot of work, Bucci says this process has helped the sandwich become even juicier.

Taking it personally Also receiving the most votes for the best cheesesteak in South Philly, Bucci knows exactly what makes his version of the classic sandwich so unique. Having lived above Larry’s Steaks during his days as a St. Joe’s

student, he remembers learning a thing or two from helping around the shop, but when his father found out what he was doing in his spare time he said, “We have our own sandwich shop, why don’t you just start helping out here? And that’s just what he did. Taking on the family’s cheesesteak as his personal project, Bucci made it his mission to improve his father’s version of the sandwich. In doing that, he started making sure nothing was fried or cooked in advance, and everything is made PHOTO BY LINDSEY NOLEN fresh to order. “If we don’t have any customers, our grill truly sensational taste. For the local stromremains completely clean, Bucci said. boli lover, Stogie Joe’s is a must try. “We’ll put everything on it for you, and we don’t use cheese wiz, it’s fake cheese. Instead Primo performance we use five to six slices of American, mild provolone or imported sharp provolone. While it took a few years for the quality of the shop’s new and improved cheesesteak to catch on, three years ago Bucci had to extend shop hours 7 a.m-3 p.m. to 9 a.m.-7 p.m. to meet the demand. Although it might take a little longer for John’s to make a fresh cheesesteak than places that mass produce them ahead of time, he says to believe him that his sandwich is worth the wait. PHOTO BY LINDSEY NOLEN

Crispy news Winner of the best stromboli in South Philly, Stogie Joe’s credits its thin crust as what makes the turnover one-of-a-kind. Manager Joe DiOrino says while other places make strombolis very doughy, customers love the tavern’s thin and crispy style. Additionally, their homemade dough, which is made daily, fresh Italian lunch meats and side of marinara help complete the famous “Stogie Joe Stromboli, a favorite among regulars and new customers. “Nothing is made frozen and we use only the best Italian meats, said manager Crescenzo Ciliberto, who is known as “Chris Chill by his friends and coworkers. “Our strombolis are crispy on top and seasoned with salt, pepper, garlic powder and oregano and brushed with olive oil. Other than that, the secret is that they’re made with love. Whether it’s because of this secret ingredient, biting into a “Stogie Joe stromboli which is filled with Boar’s Head hot pepper cheese, sopressata, hot capicola and salami — all the flavors come together to create a

hoagie has consistently remained the Italian. Another popular hoagie, for those who enjoy spicier foods, is the diablo hoagie. “We’ve been recognized for our hoagies for consecutive years, and it’s such a big accomplishment, especially with a lot of good competition around, Fabrizzio said. “Some places have even tried to imitate our hoagies, and imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Rolling with it

In the opinion of Johnny Chang’s manager Cindy Xie, what makes her standard Chinese restaurant’s sushi the best sushi in South Philly is simply its freshness and consistency throughout all of its classic and inventive rolls. She added another important element that keeps customers coming back is the restaurant is kept extremely clean. Offering more than 25 speciality rolls, Xie noted the two most popular rolls among customers are the ichiban roll and the volcano roll. All rolls are made fresh to order. “The ichiban is the most popular because people like the cooked shrimp in it, Xie said. Nestled in the back of the restaurant’s small, intimate setting, sushi chef Eric Hong, who has been working at Johnny Chang’s Preparing to celebrate its 25th anniversary for two years, prepares all the rolls himself. this July, Primo Hoagies has had a big year. To add to it, Primo Hoagies has been named best hoagie in South Philly. Audrey Fabrizzio, manager of the Ritner Street location, remembers being in fourth grade when her father, Richard Neidre, opened the shop’s first location right there on Ritner. Years later, she is beyond excited the Primo name now has more than 100 stores and officially opened one inside Citizens Bank Park this year. Fabrizzio explains that what PHOTO BY LINDSEY NOLEN makes Primo Hoagies stand out is undoubtedly the family atmosphere among the staff Having studied sushi-making while in culiand the tender love and care that is put into nary school in New York City, he explained each sandwich. he enjoys what he does because he loves to “I never thought in a million years we’d each sushi himself. Hong added his favorite have this many stores and be inside the ball- sushi involves anything with cooked maki park, Fabrizzio said. “The difference is that in it. each of our employees makes each hoagie as if they were going to eat it, rather than Egg citing news just making it to make it. T&N Homemade Kitchen, 1820 W. Offering both breaded and roasted wings, customers are given eight sauces from which to choose. “Arty makes all of the sauces from scratch and believes in the perfect wing size,” Penrose said. “My uncle was always the life of the party, and that’s what we’re trying to accomplish with our bar. Because of him, we have to offer the most amazing wings.” Included in the wing sauce options are Tollman Joe’s sweet and spicy, buffalo (mild, hot or nuclear), general tso, chipotle cilantro, mango salsa jalapeno, garlic parmesan, thai coconut curry, golden monkey BBQ and ponzo (Asian spicy citrus). Additionally, wings can be ordered in sets of 10, 20, 30 or 50.

first meal of the day, the breakfast sandwich has earned some serious praise as the best in South Philly. “I say it feels pretty good,” Michael Tuono, who shares ownership with Tommy Deeney, said. “All the hard work we do has paid off.” Breakfast is served starting at 7:30 a.m., with the prep work typically beginning an hour earlier. Tuono said they sell about 100 breakfast sandwiches a day. The bacon, egg Ribs are a hit and cheese on your choice of bread is the the go-to item. Another popular and a little different item is the Italian sausage with broccoli rabe, red potatoes and sharp provolone on a seeded roll. Calorie-watching customers tend to go with the protein sandwich of turkey bacon, egg whites, Swiss cheese, spinach or broccoli rabe on wheat toast T&N has been around since 1984, with Tuono and Denney taking over ownership five years ago. While on vacation, said. they were directed to a place right outside of Williamsburg that served the “best BBQ Winning wings around” and inquired how their ribs were made. After learning from its cooks how to slow cook a rib, today the Barbatos’ restaurant, Bomb Bomb Bar B Que Grill, has earned the title of best ribs in South Philly. “We didn’t want to just be another Italian restaurant, and we loved BBQ,” said Debbie, who is also known as “Mama Bomb.” “We use our own liquid rub made from about 10 different spices, including spiced paprika, garlic and BBQ spice, that we get P H O T O P R O V I D E D B Y T O L L M A N J O E ’ S from Chicago, and Frank’s sauce creations including a bacon bourbon BBQ sauce and Named after Joe (Tollman) Paul, winner a hot Louisiana style sauce.” of Wing Bowl VIII in 2000, Toll Man Joe’s Originally opened by her husband’s grandhas been named the best wings in South parents in 1951, Debbie additionally credits Philly. In Murray’s opinion, her restaurant offers the “whole package.”

The popular Mexican restaurant Cantina Los Caballitos can be spotted off East Passyunk Avenue due to its colorful and authentic Mexican appearance. Yet, just as tradition as its appearance are the restaurant’s tacos, which have been voted as the best tacos in South Philly. Making up each taco are two corn tortillas typically topped with onion and cilantro, and a variety of other toppings and proteins. Additional toppings include pineapple salsa, regular salsa, pico de gallo, guacamole, corn, fresh jalapenos, pickled jalapenos, black beans and Mexican and white rice. Important to note, all salsas, pico de gallo and guacamole are made fresh in-house. As for protein options, customers can choose from grilled or pulled chicken or shrimp, fish, pork or beef. For vegetarians and vegans, protein options also include black beans, vegetables, tofu and seitan. “We have a wide array of protein options,” manager Meredith Murray said. “We have great gluten-free and vegan options so that there’s something for everyone.” She explained what truly makes Cantina’s tacos the best is they’re so customizable, and because everything is fresh. Murray noted her personal favorites are the shrimp tacos and the pork tacos because of their signature tastes and freshness. Also winning “best quesadilla,” Murray explained what everyone loves most about them is, of course, the melted cheese. Typically, each quesadilla is made with shredded jack cheese. However, much like Cantina’s tacos, the quesadillas can also be customized. Restaurant-goers can opt to add soft or mild Mexican cheese, cotija, queso fresco, Oaxaca cheese or chihuahua cheese to their meal. Again, a vegan option exists and includes subbing these cheeses for Daiya cheese. “The quesadillas also have a variety of

Foodies, and non-foodies, for that matter, frequent the avenue when looking to grab a bite. We are talking the popular South Philly strip that has earned national recognition in terms of food. Name a food, and you will likely find it here. Deconstructed guacamole salad and sweet potato risotto, for instance, are two of the more popular items available at Fuel, 1917 E. Passyunk Ave. Rocco Cima opened the cozy spot in 2008 as part of East Passyunk Avenue’s revitalization. It continues to earn high marks from patrons as the best vegetarian spot. “Our team is so excited and appreciative of all our great patrons for naming us best vegetarian,” Cima said. “Our Passyunk

The catchy “Recharge Yourself” slogan keeps the customers coming. So does the fact that all menu items are under 500 calories. Having a great location also helps. “Being born and raised in the area, it’s a great site especially during the spring and summer months to see tons of people walking the avenue and eating outside. We are definitely lucky to have such a destination in our backyard,” Cima said.

riences inspired by its Philadelphia legacy. Sande Friedman, content and training manager at Di Bruno Bros., credits the company’s reputation as a result of its offering high quality products, made with integrity (often in-house) and that are infused with the story of the people who made them. “We began with a modest shop in the now-iconic South Philadelphia Italian Market in 1939; today, we employ more than 350 proud team members and have evolved into a community-driven enterprise with our five retail locations, catering, import and ecommerce divisions, Friedman said. She explained people get excited to come to the DiBruno stores time and time again because of their fun, smart and interesting staff members. She credits these members of the staff as the driving force behind the company’s day-to-day success. Furthermore, she believes the constant new culinary additions to its shelves keep customers coming back. “Finding and sharing food discoveries is our passion, and keeping our shelves stocked with new and quality items sets us apart and keeps people coming back, time and time again, Friedman said.

through. Louis Sarcone, Jr. says what makes Sarcone’s bread the best bread in South Philly is simple - tradition. “Since my great grandfather opened up, it’s been like playing whisper down the lane, Sarcone said. “If you don’t listen to the generation before you, something gets lost in translation. Sarcone’s sticks to the basics when it comes to ingredients, using mainly salt, water and yeast. The lack of chemicals in the bread is what causes it to become hard not long after being baked. “There are people out there who don’t like their bread hard the next day and think they’re being ripped off, and there are people that understand that when you buy an Italian bread, you don’t have chemicals in it, Sarcone said. Sarcone’s has many imitators, but none have been able to master its seeded Italian bread, what Sarcone calls a customer favorite. Other bakeries have even taken to naming their seeded bread after Sarcone’s. Sarcone’s favorite? The flat round bread. “Instead of taking six hours to make, it takes seven, Sarcone said. “You can taste the brick the best because it takes the longest.

When Sylvio DiCristo founded J.C. Chinese in 1957, he was committed to serving fresh, delicious food. Sixty years later, his children, Joe and Renae DiCristo, are continuing this tradition. “Everything is handpicked for freshness. We’ve been doing it that way for 60 years, Renae said. While it is the winner of the best egg roll in South Philly, J.C. Chinese is a popular spot for anyone craving late night Chinese food. Renae says egg rolls are the most popular item on the menu. Back in the days when Chickie’s and Pete’s was a little corner bar in Northeast Philly, Pete had purchased a lot of seasoning to make crabs. But the crabs were not being sold during the winter months, so it was time to do a little experimenting. Pete decided to come up with a special recipe (only Pete knows it) featuring a secret blend of seasonings. After playing around with it for seven to eight months, the Crabfries were officially born. They’re now available across the country - in Kansas City, Florida, Ohio, the Carolinas, the Jersey Shore and numerous other places. Additionally, he only uses the freshest ingredients, despite the sometimes higher costs. “I use expensive ingredients when other people are more concerned about the bottom line and not about the taste, Cacia said. Dating back to when his grandparents, Sam and Jean Cacia, opened the shop on April 9, 1953, Cacia’s has also distinguished itself through its exclusive use of a brick oven. Today, Cacia’s remains one of the few bakeries remaining that uses an authentic brick oven, possibly helping lead to its stand-out reputation. “Our oven was built in 1944, and is different from electric ovens because it bakes at a hot consistent temperature and cooks more evenly and crispy, he said.

Located in a small neighborhood setting, the restaurant is operated by the fourth and fifth generations of the Dispigno/Rubino family, and is now under the culinary control of chef Shawn Gallo. Although Gallo has only been a part of the staff for the last 25 years, he still uses the gravy recipe that was established by Francesco more than a century ago. Staying true to this recipe, Gallo uses only the freshest quality tomatoes, basil and makes the gravy from scratch each day. “Once the gravy starts to boil, we let it cook for another hour or so, said Gallo, who wouldn’t give away any more information about the restaurant’s secret recipe. “Most people taste the gravy by ordering the homemade raviolis or the veal parmesan. Gallo added the veal, his personal favorite, is the restaurant’s best seller, and said it’s so tender it cuts through almost like butter.

have nothing against Sylvester Stallone. I thought the first Rocky movie was great. I was less in love with the 100 sequels that followed. I hate to break it to the tourists who plan to visit Philadelphia, but Rocky isn’t real. If you’re coming to this great city to pose next to the Rocky statue or eat a cheesesteak, we’ll gladly take your money. But forgive me if I question your tastes. I know it’s heresy as a guy who’s lived all his life in South Philly to come down on Rocky, but geez, when is enough, enough? By the way, many of those scenes in the first Rocky movie weren’t filmed in South Philly, but Kensington. We know the difference. Rocky isn’t as phony as that terrible movie “10th and Wolf, which was filmed in Pittsburgh, but it isn’t 100 percent authentic either. What? They couldn’t find enough grit to film the entire movie in South Philly? Anyway, you might legitimately wonder what has brought on my rant about Rocky. After all, the matter of placing the Rocky statue at the foot of the Art Museum has already been litigated. And Vincent van Gogh lost to Stallone on that one by a unanimous decision. But along came the NFL to put the relevance of the Rocky statue in the national spotlight again. The NFL insisted on holding its annual draft in Philadelphia this year — that’s the good news. The bad news is that, according to reports, the NFL insisted the draft be held on the parkway encompassing the Art Museum. And not because pro football fans are known for their love of the Dutch masters. The NFL commissioner apparently chose the Parkway over the South Philadelphia sports complex because he wanted the event to be held in the proximity of the Rocky statue. I’m not aware of Rocky’s connection to the NFL. He might have been a fullback for the Washington Native Americans, but I think that was John Riggins. You would think the NFL Draft would have a more meaningful connection with the actual area where this city’s football team plays its games. Games played in the eternal quest of a Super Bowl (or is it the Holy Grail)? The Super Bowl seems more elusive. Turns out Rocky not only beat van Gogh, he beat the NovaCare Complex on a technical knockout. Don’t get me wrong. Most of the folks who live in the sports complex area are probably happy this weekend’s NFL Draft will inconvenience the hoity-toity people in the parkway area and not themselves. We South

Philadelphians fervently believe in our own role as destiny’s victims. Despite getting extra security, some part-time jobs and a street cleaning crew out of the uneasy compromise that also brought us clogged traffic and sports bars that serve $10 fries, we cling to our selfimage as The Oppressed. We don’t want anything else down here anymore. Not a casino, not shops and not restaurants, even if these entrepreneurs promised us more marble statues of lions to place on our front lawns. If the city fathers (and mothers) and the NFL are on board with holding the annual draft within cozy distance of the Rocky statue, so be it. But your columnist sees this decision as just another factor that blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Or as Kellyanne Conway would say, this is just another example of an alternate fact. Too many people visiting Philadelphia think Rocky is real. No. Ben Franklin is real. Ben actually did fly a kite in an electrical storm. At least I think he did. Ben Franklin was a real hero. Rocky did not fight somebody called Apollo Creed. And even if he did, he wouldn’t be as important as Ben Franklin. Real stuff happened in Philadelphia. Think Independence Hall. The Liberty Bell. True — Bill Conte didn’t write a terrific score for the historical events. Don’t confuse real heroes with fake heroes. Like the folks who visit Boston and rush to see a saloon called Cheers and expect Ted Danson to be serving beers behind the bar. Or those tourists who go to New York to visit the observation deck of the Empire State Building not because it’s great seeing Manhattan from the observation deck, but because that’s where Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan were supposed to meet in “Sleepless in Seattle. What next? Someone asking Bill Nye “the Science Guy where the planet Krypton is located? Am I just a nitpicker? Is it really important why tourists come to a city so long as they enrich Philadelphia’s coffers? I think it is. The blurring of lines between what is real and what is not might have helped elect Donald Trump president. A society that can’t distinguish between what is real and fiction is a society that can and did elect a reality TV star as its president. You want a real Philadelphia boxing champion? We have Smokin’ Joe Frazier. Those of us living in South Philadelphia can visit 17th and Ritner streets. There you’ll find a plaque dedicated to the great light heavyweight champion Tommy Loughran. Loughran was not only real, he lived in our neighborhood. He’s part of our history and he’s been too long forgotten. By the way, we are a lot more than just cheesesteaks, too. There are muscles, and then there are mussels. Readers weighed in on the latter subject, naming the Scannicchio’s the best in this taste showdown. “That was surprising because there are a lot places that have mussels of some sort, chef owner Christian Varralli said. “I am happy to hear the old-school way is still the best. He uses wild mussels, which are “much cleaner versus the farm-raised variety. There are a variety of ways to enjoy mussels at this corner BYOB located at 2500 S. Broad St., including Seafood Scannicchio, which is the famous seven fishes dinner. We are talking lobster, clams, mussels, shrimps, scallops, calamari and lump crab over linguini. The antipasti version features the mussels in red, white or fradiavalo sauce. The popularity of the mussels dates back to the days when Christian’s father, John, owned Scannicchio’s previous location in Atlantic City, New Jersey. “They were known for their mussels, Christian said. -B.G.

Face it, there are plenty of great places to enjoy pasta around the neighborhood — we are talking about South Philly here. When SPR readers were left with the difficult decision to select one place for best homemade pasta, P&S Ravioli Co., 1722 Oregon Ave., stood out from the pack. “We are definitely humbled and honored, Franco DiGiacomo, one of the second-generation owners, said. “We want to thank all of our loyal customers for voting for us. Sure, one could argue that ravioli is in the name, but this success story dates back to the 1960s when the DiGiacomo family, brothers Primo and Secondo, emigrated from Abruzzi, Italy, and opened a small store at 22nd and Moore streets. Fifty-one years later, the ingredients such as premium durum flour and imported cheeses from Italy help make the pasta products the talk of the town. The P&S team handles the grating process. The ravioli and the meatballs are the big movers. “They are old family recipes, DiGiacomo said. “We make them like you would make them at home. They are just made in bigger batches.

According to Gus Isgro, owner of Isgro’s Bakery, the secret to making a great cannoli is the ability to keep the shell crisp, but not so crisp it hurts when biting into it. Having won the best cannoli in South Philly, and having become known across the country for his shop, it’s clear Isgro knows what he’s talking about. “The perfect cannoli is a combination of filing and shell that melts in your mouth when you chew it, the third-generation pastry chef said. “As you chew it, the cannoli should absorb the moisture from your cheeks and get softer. We fill ours fresh for each customer so they have confidence that they can last up to a day or a day and a half without getting soft. Using the recipe his grandfather, Mario Isgra, brought from Italy and began using when he opened the shop in 1904, he refuses to sell anything less than perfect to retain the high quality attached to his family’s name.

Through this quality control, Federal Donuts has retained numerous repeat customers, many of whom are customers of the brand’s original location in South Philly. Although there are typically nine rotating flavors of the cake donuts in the shop at any given time, the flavors often tie in with the season or time of the year. The two latest flavors being offered are sea salt caramel and triple chocolate. “Our top seller is the cinnamon brown sugar donut because it’s made hot and fresh to order with an old-school cinnamon flavor that a lot of people enjoy, said Henneman, whose personal favorite is the light and fluffy strawberry lavender donut. “We’ll begin to offer more fruity flavors as we get into summer.

When Matty and Cristina Beningno, owners of Potito’s Bakery, 1614 W. The vanilla cupcakes with buttercream and jimmies are the top seller, while the red velvet cupcake with cream cheese icing is also popular. The double espresso and Italian Market signature drip coffee are the best sellers, while the iced coffee with coffee iced cubes tends to be popular during the warmer months. “For over 20 years, our customers have enjoyed these as their favorites. Nanci Italiano has been running Italiano’s Water Ice out of her home for as long as she can remember. Her mother started the stand more than 40 years ago, and she has since taken over. “She wanted to open a little water ice stand for the neighborhood, Nanci said of her mother. “To me, all my customers are like my family. They’ve been there since the beginning. Many of those customers also spoke up when it came time to vote for best water ice in South Philly. When asked to elaborate on Italiano’s secret to being the best, she summed it up with one word — love. “It’s doing what you do and loving it, Nanci said. “It wasn’t just a business, it was a passion and a feeling of excitement. Nanci says Italiano’s was the first shop to use the term “gelati — referring to eating water ice and ice cream together. The Italiano family simply took the “o off of “gelato and replaced it with an “i to represent their last name. Decades later, Nanci has never sacrificed quality for convenience. To this day, Italiano’s still uses hand-dipped premium ice cream and squeezes lemons by hand. A decision on if or when Italiano’s will open for the season has yet to be determined. A>@

This open, friendly space features a bar with 24 beers on tap, comfy leather orange booths paired with small tables to create a restaurant ambiance, with a menu featuring comfort foods such as meatloaf, pizza and chicken. Come Saturday, April 22, the garage door will be open daily, at least while the weather permits, as Washington Avenue’s newest foodie destination — Chick’s, 11805-07 Washington Ave. — opens to the public. Gina Cedrone-Narducci, a former String Theory Schools teacher and administrator, is starting a new career in the restaurant biz with husband Phillip Narducci, who has previous experience in the food and entertainment industry, and who will help on the management end. The gastropub and pizza shop is named in honor of Phillip’s father — Frank “Chickie Narducci Sr., who had his life cut short in 1982. “My wife is retired and wanted to do a little something, Phillip said. The passion project, which has been more than a year in the works, has involved gutting the more than 2,800-square feet of space. Besides talking about bringing the continued on page 18

continued from page 16 “Wow! to food, contractors have been working around the clock, getting the place ready for its big public unveiling. It’s not uncommon to find members of the management team holding brainstorming sessions in the makeshift office space, which is being transformed into a smaller space for customers looking to grab a quick bite. Take-out and delivery service is in the works, too. But the food, especially the pizza, is going to be the conversation piece here. The kitchen staff is led by executive chef Fred Ryan and pizzaioli Jennifer Choplin, with both being familiar faces on the Philly culinary scene. Choplin, who was trained by Brigantessa co-owner Joe Cicala, and Ryan, formerly of Devil’s Den and White Dog Cafe, are putting the finishing touches on a menu featuring “upscale comfort food. Chick’s Burger, made with short rib, chuck and dry-aged brisket and finished with a special sauce, panko-crusted chicken parm with ricotta and red gravy on a garlic roll and Pho mussels in a lemongrass broth with bean sprouts are just a few of the dishes guests can looking forward to enjoying. General manager and beverage director Ilona Ahearn, who began her restaurant career at The Victor Cafe, and assistant manager Jayne Campbell are the other members of the management team. They share the common goal of making Chick’s the new go-to spot for breakfast, lunch, dinner or a late-night snack. The restaurant opens at 11 a.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends for brunch. The hours for the take-out section are 7 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays and 7 a.m.-1 a.m. weekends. “People looking for a place to hang can come here, enjoy some good food and be part of our family, Gina said. Grand opening bash Instead of simply reading about Washington Avenue’s hottest new foodie destination, come check out and taste what Chick’s is all about. The Narduccis are introducing Chick’s to the public in true South Philly fashion – a block party. It’s one of those starts at 4 p.m., and ends whenever festivities. The outside offerings will include free pizza and cannoli. Inside, there will be cocktails and a full menu available for purchase. There will plenty of entertainment, too, with The Business, The Cultour, DJ Johnny Looch, 2017 South Philly Review Difference Maker Felicia Punzo, Ben Marsella, Sonny Averona Jr., Gabby Delisi along with Antonia & Dan. All about Science April 21-29

B

he Philly Science Festival is back with more interactive programs than ever before. Attendees are invited to partake and be inspired by a variety of activities geared to inspire with experiments meant to demonstrate the role and importance science has in everything we do. The festival offers an array of interactive and unique activities designed to highlight the importance of science within our everyday lives. In previous years, the festival has surpassed expectations, now it’s taking place at several local locations with science institutions playing host across the city, and even state lines into New Jersey. Once again, the festival will host major free festival events on Saturday, April 22, which include such programming as; Be A Paleontologist, Science Slam, and Family Science Sunday. And stargazing will be available for the Citywide Star Party on April 23. New to the programming list this year, the Be a Scientist program has invited attendees into the labs of some of the most highly trained ecologists, marine biologists and paleontologists in surrounding areas. For the New Jersey location of Be a Scientist at Rowan University’s Edleman Fossil Park, people can dig along actual scientists for fossils millions and millions of years old. Guests of all ages are encouraged to be inspired by a variety of activities, experiments and demonstrations all while learning from local experts and scientists. There are countless family-friendly interactive programs as well as several planned for guests 21 and up. All of which will culminate in a massive Science Carnival across the river, on April 29 at Penn’s Landing. Free. Drafting up plans 2/D3 A>/2/@=

nough of the appetizers. Let’s get to the main course of this offseason for the Eagles, which just happens to take place on April 27-29 in Philadelphia (you know that because you’ve experienced the traffic and travel headaches already). For the Eagles to reach the level of a championship-contending team, they have to crush the NFL Draft. It is the foundation of every team’s chances for success, and the Eagles understand that very well. They’ve invested in a rebuilt personnel department, headed by Joe Douglas, and they have eight picks and, well, they know they need to use them well.

So where are the target areas for everything that goes down one week from now? Here is a look at the team’s positions of need. CORNERBACK Pretty obvious, right? The Eagles are lacking here, and the needs are significant. Secondyear man Jalen Mills returns after a promising rookie season, and Ron Brooks hopes to make a return from injury. Other than that, the Eagles have a bunch of guys. Look for cornerback to be addressed at the top of the draft, although not necessarily in the first round, and in later picks. RUNNING BACK In a draft filled with talent in the offensive backfield, the Eagles are going to have options throughout the weekend to bring in another playmaker. And the odds are they’re going to do it. Do they take a running back at No. 14 overall? Could happen, although the Eagles haven’t taken a running back in the first round since Keith Byars in 1986. The Eagles want a three-down back who can block, who can catch the football and who, of

course, can run it. This is a great draft to have a need at running back. DEFENSIVE END Wanted: A great pass rush. And the Eagles didn’t have it last year. And Chris Long isn’t the long-term answer. The Eagles need another threat in addition to Brandon Graham off the edge. First round? Could happen if the names come off the board right. Think how good the Jim Schwartz defense would be with a stud pass rusher added. WIDE RECEIVER Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith are important additions and they’re expected to revitalize the passing game, but the Eagles are still keeping their eyes open. Jordan Matthews has one year remaining on his contract. Jeffery is here on a one-year deal. Nelson Agholor has not found his game at the NFL level. Does that sound like long-term security at this position? LINEBACKER Don’t rule out linebacker if the right name is there at No. 14 in the first round. The Eagles are awfully thin at linebacker. A playmaking

linebacker would also add to this defense. Jordan Hicks is a player and so is Nigel Bradham. Mychal Kendricks? He played very little last season. The Eagles need help here, too. SAFETY With Malcolm Jenkins and Rodney McLeod as the starters, the Eagles are really solid. Behind them? Not so much. There are a slew of good safeties in this draft, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Eagles add one, even as early as rounds three or four. DEFENSIVE TACKLE The addition of Tim Jernigan is a big plus, and he should team nicely with Fletcher Cox inside as attacking tackles. But the Eagles could be looking for more, especially in light of the reported pectoral injury to Beau Allen that could sideline him until the middle of the season. It all starts up front, and the Eagles will try to add to the depth at defensive tackle at some point in the draft. A>@ Comment tures.

YHU VLQFH :UHVWOH0DQLD 0DWW DQG -HII +DUG\ KDYH EHHQ WKH WDON RI WKH SURIHVVLRQDO ZUHVWOLQJ ZRUOG The brothers returned to World Wrestling Entertainment on April 2 in front of nearly 80,000 fans in Orlando, Florida, to win the tag team championship. Ever since, the duo have been starring on Monday Night Raw, and have been superstars on social media. But before they become full-time WWE wrestlers, they have a few dates they were already committed to, and one of them is when they come to Philadelphia to take on Tommy Dreamer and Bubba Ray Dudley at the 2300 Arena at House of Hardcore 25. “It’s funny, this is the 25th one and every one continues to get bigger than the previous one and that’s by design, said Dreamer, the promotion’s owner. “Every time we go out, we try to make it a memorable event. We’re fans. We want to cater to the wrestling fans because that’s who I am. I still love wrestling and I want the fans to love wrestling. This will be the third straight time Philadelphia will feature Dreamer against Matt Hardy in the main event. And it couldn’t have come at a better time with the Hardys returning to WWE. “I’m glad they’re doing so well, and I’m glad they’re still able to wrestle and fulfill their previous bookings, Dreamer said. “Vince McMahon, he’s old school. When

I first came after the original ECW, I had a bunch of events I was signed for, and he allowed me to do them. He’s old school, if you commit to something, he lets you finish it. The main event should be a great spectacle, but Dreamer never wants his shows to be a one-match event, and this show should be no different. Also slated to appear at the event are Pentagon Jr. against Sami Callihan, as well as former WWE star MVP and Brian Cage. The event will take place 24 hours after House of Hardcore debuts in Metuchen, New Jersey. That show will be highlighted by Dreamer against Matt Hardy. The weekend will begin a strong run for HOH, which includes a five-date tour of Australia, and the company’s debut in Chicago. Dreamer started HOH in 2012 and he’s steadily grown it every time. “It’s definitely growing, Dreamer said. “We draw bigger crowds than any promotion outside WWE. That’s not saying anything about other promotions, I’m a wrestling fan and I like many other promotions, but we’re trying to make sure what we do is special. He’s also giving an outlet for future stars to hone their craft, even if it means they might not be wrestling with the promotion for long. Rhino starred for Dreamer in the early days of HOH. He was signed by WWE. Tony Nese had wrestled on every HOH card until late last year, when he, too, was signed by the top promotion. Even announcer Vic Travagliante, the voice of HOH, has gone on to WWE. Losing talent to the conglomerate can be a challenge because it means he has to find new stars, but Dreamer is still happy to see his friends succeed. “When Tony Nese signed (with WWE), I was very happy because he’s a guy who worked for it, he deserved a break, Dreamer said. “I don’t like to lose these guys, but I’m happy to see him go on to get that break. Losing Vic was very tough because

he was huge for what we did. “In the original ECW, I didn’t know who would leave, but I knew I would be there. Now I’m committed to House of Hardcore. DREAMER IS HAPPY his baby is growing up. And he’s very happy the promotion is doing so well in Philadelphia, where Dreamer, whose real name is Tommy Laughlin, made his mark in the original ECW. Every time he returns to the 2300 Arena, which was previously known as the ECW Arena, he gets just as excited as he did when he was cutting his teeth in the sport. “I still always say Tommy Laughlin was born in New York, but Tommy Dreamer was born in Philadelphia, he said. “I still do the same routine every time we come to Philadelphia, the same routine that Paul (Heyman, former ECW owner) would do. Wrestling at the arena has always been very special to me, and it’s a special place for the fans. It’s why I’m so happy that the building has been able to be the base for House of Hardcore. Philadelphia is special to me and it’s our home base. Making it to show No. 25 with seven more on the horizon means House of Hardcore is continuing to be a success. But Dreamer’s focus is on having a strong weekend in New Jersey and Philadelphia. After that, he’ll continue to pour his heart and soul into the promotion. “This main event has a lot of subplots, Dreamer said. “That’s all booking. We had me against Matt, me against Matt in a cage, and now it’s the Hardys against me and Bubba Ray. The Hardys are hot right now. Everyone is special, but this one should be a lot of fun. The show begins at 8 p.m. That morning, also at the 2300 Arena, there will be a convention, where fans can get pictures and autographs with wrestlers, including Ric Flair, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Ricky Steamboat.
