ore than 10 worthy candidates are campaigning in the Democratic primary for the newly drawn fifth congressional district. Greg Vitali by far is the candidate most trusted by Democrats and Republicans after his many years of serving everyone as the state representative of the 166th district of Pennsylvania. Vitali has gained that trust by his hard work building relationships with people without sacrificing his principles or his values. We all know that Vitali tirelessly defends our clean air, clean water, and green spaces against polluters. Did you know that for more than 20 years Vitali has consistently voted to protect a woman’s right – my right and my daughter’s right – to control her own health care and make her own reproduction decisions? Did you know that for more than 20 years Vitali has consistently voted to protect the safety of our communities by voting for sensible gun laws and most recently calling for the expansion of background checks and banning bump stocks? Vitali is a man who has served the 166th district of Pennsylvania well for more than 25 years. He will serve us well as our representative from the 5th Congressional district of Pennsylvania. Vitali cares about the people he serves. Last fall, he walked door-to-door with me when I ran for commissioner of Haverford Township’s second ward. We went to every house together, and I witnessed firsthand how much people, Republican and Democrat alike, respect and trust him. He talked to them about the Eagles and the Phillies, and he answered their questions with expertise and thoughtfulness. I remember one particular day when an older woman came to answer the door. She was terribly worried because she could not find her keys anywhere. I watched him talk her through her worry until she decided to call a family member. Before we left, he made sure that she had his card so she could call his office for help in the future. Over and over again, I saw how he listens to people, tries to help them, and makes real connections with them. Please support Vitali in the Democratic primary on May 15. He is the one candidate who has proven over many years of service that he will fight for us and our communities in Washington because he cares about everyday folks. rankly, I was not surprised at the recent “racial” incident at the STARBUCKS at Rittenhouse Square. After all, the company has been aggressively promoting their new “Blonde Roast” lately. At this moment I’m trying to confirm rumors that David Duke switched from DUNKIN” to STARBUCKS because of his preference for this pale brew. I flew to Louisiana to confront Duke about the rumor. He told me to “lighten up,” and added an extra creamer to his Grandesized cup. Once I get to the bottom of my investigative reporting on STARBUCKS racial policies, my next assignment is to figure out why their small-sized coffee is called “tall.” For years, coffee companies have been segregating their beans by color, alerting my suspicions. Of course, right-wing evangelicals have been vilifying STARBUCKS for years since they discovered the company’s logo contained a hidden tribute to Satan. Some church leaders objected to the design of their holiday cups because they didn’t express “the true meaning of Christmas.” And didn’t some South Carolinians swear they saw Beelzebub in the foam of their Mochaccinos? I don’t know about you, but I’m happy that the CEO of STARBUCKS admitted their mistake in denying the two African-American men the use of the restroom. Then he did what CEOs do best. Blamed the incident on his manager. STARBUCKS, in accordance with its reputation as a consistently progressive company, didn’t fire their manager. She left by “mutual” agreement. Which is to say, the company agreed to extract her from under the bus where they threw her so she could disappear into the night. I’m told she was heard screaming as she left the store, “It wasn’t racist. I was afraid they wouldn’t remember to lift the toilet seat!” As most national news outlets did, FOX NEWS covered the STARBUCKS incident. But FOX was the only one to claim that the protesters from BLACK LIVES MATTER were actors, not activists. Sean Hannity said he recognized one of the protesters as an extra in the movie BLACK PANTHER. Hannity swears that some of the members of BLACK LIVES

MATTER are Parkland students in black face. President Trump joined Hannity by phone and wondered aloud why anyone would patronize STARBUCKS when you can get a cup of java for a buck at McDonald’s. And he added, “The breakfast sandwiches are better.” Hannity chimed in calling STARBUCKS “the home of bleeding heart liberal elitists.” Sean said he was surprised that liberals weren’t all tea drinkers. Trump congratulated all the “good” people who were part of the white Nazi counter-protesters outside STARBUCKS. Hannity gently reminded the President that there weren’t any white Nazi counter-protesters there. Trump was insistent. “Next, you’re going to tell me I didn’t see those Muslims celebrating the attack on 9/11.” Laura Ingraham made a quick appearance to question the educational qualifications of the two black men who were refused restroom privileges. The Hannity Show ended with all three Foxsters agreeing that the situation could’ve been resolved without protests, if everyone involved had been carrying guns. I have to admire DUNKIN” DONUTS for taking advantage of STARBUCKS bad publicity. Love those new signs in their windows – AT DUNKIN,’ YOU PEE FOR FREE. WAWA’s doesn’t want to be left out. They noted that you don’t have to know what “venti” means when you buy a cup of their coffee. WAWA doesn’t segregate their coffee beans, according to their CEO. I’ve always suspected WAWA of using the same beans anyway in their 110 varieties of coffee. The difference in flavor, I think, is in the creamers. Artificially flavored creamers, as STARBUCKS would likely point out. WAWA’s new advertising slogan is YOU CAN WEE WEE AT WAWA. I’m writing a screenplay about this. I’m calling it CREAMER vs. CREAMER. Hosted by the South of South Neighbors Association, Plazapalooza benefits the upkeep of the Grays Ferry Triangle pedestrian plaza. The event is set for May 12 from noon to 7 p.m.

Plazapalooza set for May 12 By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

n Saturday, May 12, South of South Neighbors Association is bringing back Plazapalooza for its ninth consecutive year. The event serves as a fundraiser for the Grays Ferry Triangle, located at the intersection of South Street, 23rd Street and Grays Ferry Avenue. The plaza at the triangle has existed for five years. According to SOSNA Programs Manager Nicole Koedyker, the event will feature live music, food trucks, a “puppy kissing booth” to raise money for the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, and a wine bar. While parents have drinks, children will be allowed to play in the Kid’s Corner, which will feature activities and games. “We have a couple of local businesses that are very kidfocused, [including] Igloo and Baby WordPlay,” Koedyker said. “Those kids stores on South Street are creating these fun games and activities while their parents can drink a beer.” The event is sponsored by Grace Tavern and Dogfish Head Brewery, and there will be plenty of alcohol and other fun things for adults as well. “It’s a great day to spend time outside,” Koedyker said. The event, scheduled for noon to 7 p.m. will also feature live music from the following five artists: Tall Trees, Montrose Allstars, New Pony, Drum Like A Lady and Ill Doots. Koedyker said the event drew approximately 2,000 people last year. This year, she expects it to draw between 2,500 and 3,000. Work on the plaza initially started in 2012 when SOSNA

members would volunteer to do monthly cleanings at the site. They eventually went around to all the nearby residents and neighbors and asked them about potentially turning the triangle, which at the time was a street open to traffic, into a pedestrian plaza. An overwhelming majority of people – 98 percent, according to South Street West Business Association Chairman Marcus Ferreira – supported the idea, but unfortunately that wasn’t enough. “At the time you needed 100 percent,” Ferreira said, “of the adjacent property owners to approve of the loss of parking and the plaza use.” Luckily, the group lobbied Councilman Kenyatta Johnson to pass legislation that reduced the threshold to 75 percent. The legislation passed, and SOSNA was free to create the pedestrian plaza in the triangle. They subsequently raised $10,000, according to Ferreira, to pay for the foundation of the plaza, which included planters, chairs and tables. “We were able to get a groundswell of support,” he said. Since that time, that particular street has been struck from the city’s map, and has been a favorite local community spot of local residents for its summertime music series and other events that feature pumpkin carving, painting and more. The monthly cleanups still happen at 10 a.m. on the first Sunday of every month. Each Plazapalooza fundraiser generates thousands of dollars that go toward the upkeep of the park. Impressively, not a single chair or table from the plaza has ever been stolen, according to Ferreira. In fact, he said, a new chair appeared once, and it’s still there today. For more information about this year’s Plazapalooza, check out the Plazapalooza 2018 Facebook page.

GRACE MAIORANO/South Philly Review

Last Saturday, dozens of attendees, including Commissioner of Parks and Recreation Kathryn Ott Lovell, state Rep. Jordan Davis, Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, former Eagles linebacker Connor Barwin and Mayor Jim Kenney celebrated the finalization of renovations at Smith Playground – home to the South Philly Hurricanes. The Make the World Better Foundation, a nonprofit started by Barwin, raised more than $3 million for improvements since late 2015.

SMITH PLAYGROUND: Upgrades at West Passyunk park on display

Connor Barwin, has raised more than $3 million for Smith, including resources from the city and state, as well as funding from local organizations, businesses, foundations and private donations, and even institutions such as the National Football League and ESPN. This past weekend’s afternoon of games, competitions and dedications by officials, including Mayor Jim Kenney, served as the official community celebration and ribbon-cutting for the highly anticipated project that stretches over 7.5 acres. “We’re here to celebrate an absolutely incredible transformation of Smith Playground, which was always an amazing place, but now, physically, reflects the amazing activities that happen here,” Kathryn Ott Lovell, commissioner of Parks and Recreation, told the crowd. Throughout the process, the MTWB Foundation partnered with several revitalization and redevelopment initiatives, including the Philly-based Urban Roots and national nonprofit Local Initiatives Support Corporation. The first phase, which was completed in spring 2016, focused on improvements to the rec building, including the

installation of a kitchenette and the first WHYY and Keyspot Media Lab. Phase 2, which started in fall 2016 and just recently wrapped up, included playground upgrades, renovated basketball courts, a new turf sport field, outdoor fitness area, a walking trail and Green Stormwater Infrastructure operated by the Philadelphia Water Department. Aside from improving athleticism, the site concurrently fosters mentorship in the neighborhood’s youth. “We know when we deal with the issue of violence that’s taking place in our communities, it’s important to have our young people to get involved with things to stay positive,” said Second District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, who recalls dust balls once fouling the Smith site. The site sits just behind Wilson Park – the largest Philadelphia Housing Authority development in the City. Officials stressed the ongoing need for similar renovations to break ground in communities throughout Philadelphia, as Ott Lovell noted Rebuild Philadelphia – a 2017 initiative implemented by Kenney, which invests $500 million in parks, playgrounds and rec

Eagles center Jason Kelce signs an autograph for a young fan at the Smith Playground event. centers around the city. “This is an amazing opportunity for us to showcase how you can partner city and state with philanthropy and how you can get things done for the young people in our community,” said state Rep. Jordan Harris. During the fundraising, Johnson’s office donated $820,000, former Mayor Michael Nutter’s office donated $400,000, the offices of Parks and Rec-

reation funded $300,000 and the Philadelphia Water Department provided $600,000, as reported by SPR in 2016. The NFL gifted two grants, totaling $420,000, according to Barwin. A focal point of renovations is Smith’s new stormwater management, which diverts more than 5 million gallons of water from the sewer system every year. The management is part of PWD

and the city’s Green City, Clean Water initiative – a 25-year, multi-billion dollar program to use natural, vegetated practices in communities to manage stormwater and reduce pollution. The infrastructure carries tremendous amounts of stormwater into the soil, redirecting it away from water pipes, which, in due course, stops pollution in the city’s drinking water supply. “This is nature at work, and nature can be integrated into your play area,” said Marc Cammarata, a PWD official. At the conclusion of speeches, youngsters huddled at the 30-yard line for the official ribbon-cutting. From environmental to recreational, the spectrum of renovations at Smith Playground was acclaimed by attendees all afternoon. “We appreciate (MTWB) for not just dropping in from the sky and making some investments here,” Ott Lovell said, “but, for working one-on-one with this community, with these neighbors, with these stewards to make sure that these improvements truly reflect the dreams and aspirations of every single person who lives in this neighborhood.”

Annual South Street Spring Festival returns May 5 By Grace Maiorano

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

eneath a canopy of kaleidoscopic ribbons, sounds ranging from folk dancing to funk fusions – and a myriad of other entertainment – will soon take over South Street. For the sixth year, the South Street Headhouse District is hosting its nationally acclaimed annual South Street Spring Festival on Saturday, May 5, starting at 11 a.m. Spanning from Front to 8th streets, more than 30 local vendors, musicians and more will populate the signature Philly thoroughfare. Considered the kickoff to the city’s series of summer festivals, the pay-as-you-go event was brainstormed more than a half-a-decade ago by the South Street Headhouse District, as the organization recognized the need for a celebration on one of the most historic and distinguished stretches of street. “There had not been a major street festival on South Street for many years,â€? said Mike Harris, executive director of the South Street Headhouse District. “And Brauhaus Schmitz wanted to do a Maifest that kind of mirrored their highly popular Oktoberfest.â€? The event’s hub and hook is its “festival within a festival,â€? as renowned restaurant and South Street occupant Brauhaus Schmitz peppers the afternoon with tons of German flare, encompassing bratwurst sausage, flower headband crafts, a schnapski tent, German-Hungarian dancers, the Heimatklänge Band, and, of course, the iconic 30foot Maypole, marking the staple sight of Maifest. While most elements, like Maifest, return to the festival each year, the South Street Headhouse District highlights new businesses, restaurants, bars, entertainment and activities every year. Harris says in the weeks and months leading up to each annual event, the South Street Headhouse District receives floods of vendor and entertainment applications. “Some things come and some things go, but we try to mix it up,â€? Harris said. Some new aspects this time around include a virtual reality booth, pony rides and a mariachi band, as this year’s festival will coincide with Cinco de Mayo. Harris noted that along with the Mexican holiday, the festival always falls at the same time as the Kentucky Derby, stirring more enthusiasm in the crowd. May 5 is also Free Comic Book Day, and Atomic City Comics, coincidentally another South Street occupant and festival participant, will

feature free giveaways and character appearances in honor of the national event. “It’s kind of this trifecta of other things happening, he said. “It adds to the overall spirit and fun of the day. Gracing three stages, a spectrum of the region’s most popular local artists – from trumpet players to high-energy rockers – will groove throughout the afternoon and into the evening. Performances will be stitched together by tons of other activities, like a taco eating contest and family fun pastimes, like balloon art and face painting. “We always try to have an area where kids can have a concentration of fun things they might want do, Harris said. Although the festival started relatively small six years ago, the day now sees close to 40,000 people every year, drawing attendees from even outside the state, according to Harris. In March 2016, USA Today named the South Street Spring Festival one of the top things to do that season in Philly. Just this year, the Philadelphia Inquirer gave the event similar accolades. “From a brainchild five years ago to being in USA Today – it’s kind of a cool mark of success, Harris said. Being a blend of local neighbors and outside tourists, as well as synthesis of culture, the festival embodies the very nature of the locale it occupies. “We try to keep it much like South Street, Harris said. “We try to keep it independent, bringing in as much we could as best we could to reflect South Street, reflecting our area through art, through music and a variety of interesting things.

Flavors of the Avenue is back with more fun for everyone Sample the East Passyunk food scene from Broad Street to Dickinson Street on Sunday, April 29 By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Flavors of the Avenue Festival will return to East Passyunk Avenue for five blocks and six hours of food, drinks, live music, shopping and free family fun on April 29 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event is put on by the East Passyunk Avenue Business Improvement District. “It’s a lovely day, said EPABID executive director Pam Zenzola. “It’s a very family friendly day because you have lots of strollers and families walking down the avenue. There’s also some young folks who want to have a nice party.

The event, which takes place along East Passyunk Avenue from Broad Street to Dickinson Street, will feature all the mainstays of the East Passyunk restaurant scene, including Bing Bing Dim Sum, Stogie Joe’s Tavern, Le Virtu and more. It will also feature a variety of newcomers to the scene, including Redcrest Fried Chicken, Barcelona Wine Bar, Pistola’s Del Sur and Manatawny Still Works. This weekend’s event will also feature live music from the River Bones Band, Ricky Bacarre and City Rhythm and more along the festival route. At the corner of East Passyunk and Mifflin, Founder’s Brewing, which is a main sponsor of the event, will give away free two-ounce samples of beer.

Zenzola said the event is fun not only because of all the food and music, but also because it’s the first main event of the year. As a result, it’s the first opportunity for residents in the neighborhood to mingle with each other. “For the people who are neighbors and who live in the community it was like ‘hey, have you been?’ she said. “It’s the first community outing of the year. Along with ample food, drinks and music, the Flavors Festival will offer free family friendly activities – including kids art and activity zone at the Singing Fountain, a typewriter station at Dickinson, a kids’ moon bounce and a giant inflatable slide at the East Passyunk Gateway, kids’ crafts with

framing shop Frame Fatale, and outdoor games for kids and adults of all ages. Additionally, boutiques and businesses along East Passyunk will also host workshops, activities and family fun inside their spaces. A helpful hint? Try not to drive if you can help it, Zenzola said. “This is South Philly; parking is a struggle, she said. “So take the subway, ride a bike or walk. If you must drive, however, Zenzola recommends the parking garage next to Constitution Health Plaza, which is on the 1400 block of McKean Street. Zenzola said one of the most important reasons residents should come out is because it’s important to support your local businesses.

“This neighborhood is primarily built on independent business owners, she said. “They are me, they are you. They had a dream and they opened a business. It’s those business owners, Zenzola said, who have helped make the East Passyunk neighborhood one of the most lively communities in Philadelphia. “This avenue, 18 years ago, had a 60 percent vacancy rate and now it’s under 4, she said. “We’re one of the most popular neighborhoods in the city, and a lot of it has to do with these businesses. For more information about the festival go to visiteastpassyunk.com and click “events.

CARDELLA: Hot takes

<<Continued from page 6 Here in South Philadelphia, we’re blaming Mayor Jim Kenney for the STARBUCKS incident. Why? Because we firmly believe that Kenney is behind every evil that has befallen the world since he took office or rather since he came out in favor of moving the Rizzo statue (rumor has it that big Frank drank LINTON’S coffee). I interviewed several disgruntled South Philadelphians on their opinions about the center city STARBUCKS incident. Here’s excerpts from some of my interviews: Dee – “It’s Kenney’s fault. You see him running right away to that STARBUCKS in center city. You never see him visit our STARBUCKS. Niki – “Rizzo would’ve locked all of them up. No questions asked. Ralphie – “I saw Kenney one time at the Melrose drinking coffee. He holds his pinkie finger out when he holds the cup. Chibby – “Maybe Kenney will start taxing the restrooms, too. Denise – “Who cares about STARBUCKS? Is Kenney going to bring the parade back down here? That’s what I want to know. The best thing you could say about what happened at STARBUCKS is that there were white people standing up for the black guys who were handcuffed and perp-walked out the door. It’s likely the first time anyone sitting in STARBUCKS ever looked up from their lap top. It’s good to know that the perception of racial injustice can wake a STARBUCKS customer out of their zombie-like trance. Grounds for optimism. Not even being charged $9 for a Triple Venti, non-fat, caramel Macchiato can stir them. Have we heard the last of the STARBUCKS incident? Will we ever have clean, public restrooms in Philadelphia? Or is it TOO LITTLE TOO LATTE?

EAGLES INSIDER

Eagles will have few picks in draft, but few needs, too

H

owie Roseman and the Eagles are “open for business, Roseman said a week before the NFL Draft, so you can expect during this three-day event that Roseman will have plenty of opportunities to move up, down and all around. That’s the way he works. One of the NFL’s most aggressive personnel decision makers is in his element with the draft upon us. As the Eagles have been so proactive in the months following their first Super Bowl victory, they don’t have all the weapons they usually have at their disposal this weekend. With only six draft picks, the Eagles may be in the unfamiliar territory of letting the draft come to them.

It will be tough to move up, because the Eagles can ill afford to give up draft picks in trades. There aren’t veterans on the roster who appear to have great value in trades for more draft currency. So if the Eagles are going to move, particularly early on, it’s likely to be in reverse to accumulate more picks. In any event, the team has needs to address in the roster. Let’s see what

That isn’t enough. Do the Eagles think that Billy Brown, Joshua Perkins or Adam Zaruba can be that coveted third tight end? All three have ability, but in a tight end-strong draft, the Eagles could very well dip into the talent pool, even early. ‡ /LQHEDFNHU -XVW KRZ PXFK GR WKH Eagles trust middle linebacker Jordan Hicks, who has been injured in two of his three NFL seasons (torn pectoral

muscle in 2015, torn Achilles tendon 2017)? They signed veteran Paul Worrilow and still have Joe Walker, but if the Eagles have a chance to get a standout prospect for the middle of the defense, it will be hard to pass up. ‡ 5XQQLQJ EDFN -D\ $MD\L LV LQ WKH final year of his contract and has a knee with a bone-on-bone condition, so how long can he last playing at a high level? Corey Clement is a young and rising back, but he may be best suited to share the responsibilities in the backfield. The Eagles are always into developing them for three or four years down the line. ‡ :LGH UHFHLYHU 0LNH :DOODFH ZDV a nice pickup in free agency, but if the Eagles can get some speed and versatilLW\ KHUH LWœV ZRUWK D ORRN 0Rœ ZHDS ons, mo’ weapons, mo’ weapons. ‡ 6DIHW\ 0DOFROP -HQNLQV DQG 5RG QH\ 0F/HRG DUH D WHUULILF WZRVRPH but the Eagles could use a waiting-inthe-wings kind of safety and he could be coming in the draft. DA’s office takes to Point Breeze for community listening session By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

M

embers from the District Attorney’s Office took part in a community listening session Thursday night at Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church in Point Breeze. DA Larry Krasner wasn’t present at the meeting. However, the following DA’s office representatives were present: Director of Victim’s Services Movita Johnson-Harrell, Chief of Public Nuisance Task Force Andrew Jenemann, Chief of the Conviction Integrity Unit Patricia Cummings, Assistant District Attorney Jim Dellafiora, Director of Immigration Counsel Caleb Arnold, and First Assistant District Attorney Bob Listenbee. State Sen. Anthony Williams and State Rep. Jordan Harris were also in attendance, however, neither stayed for the entire meeting. “We are here so that we can come to understand the kinds of issues and concerns that you have, Listenbee said at the event. As he introduced himself, Listenbee spoke extensively about Philadelphia’s role in the country’s incarceration problem. “During the campaign, you heard a lot about a broken criminal justice system. A system that for too long had operated under a philosophy we’re supposed to win all cases at any case, seek every mandatory sentence that they could and recommend sentences without consideration given to the needs of the offenders or charges against them, he said. Listenbee went on to say things would be conducted differently. The current DA, he said, would not treat people with substance abuse disorders the same way as people without them, which he believes contributed to why many young people have ended up “in state prison and county jails with records that have barred them from having productive lives. Listenbee said “Philadelphia is the center for some of the worst sentencing practices not only in Pennsylvania, but in the entire United States, while citing Philadelphia’s incarceration rate, which has risen more than 700 percent since the 1970s – even worse than the country’s total incarceration rate, which, he said, has gone up more than 500 percent. During the question and answer portion of the meeting, a resident asked about laws regarding officers reading Miranda rights. “Anybody who watches television or a movie is

Sylvester Stallone films a scene from “Creed IIâ€? along with crew members last week in the Girard Estate area. going to think exactly what you’re saying, which is the minute we get put under arrest, we’re entitled to have our Miranda rights read to us,â€? said Cummings, “but ‌ the whole point of [reciting Miranda rights] is that we’re making sure as a society that cops – and I’m going to say this bluntly – are not beating (up) people and getting confessions or they’re not forcing people psychologically to confess.â€? Cummings said officers are only obligated to read Miranda rights before they interrogate suspects. That way, she said, if someone makes an incriminating statement they will do so “voluntarilyâ€? and “knowingly.â€?

Another resident asked about programs available for the youth in the community to learn about their rights. Nobody from the DA’s office could name a specific program, but they were open to the idea of finding ways to make sure young people are more informed. “In terms of engaging young people, said Johnson-Harrell, “you can call me, we can set up a tour to bring a group of young people into the DA’s office, to see the different units, to see what we’re doing there. It was important the youth understand their rights because police officers, she claimed, are no longer “friends of the youth.

“We want youth to come in because when I grew up, police officers were our friends, she said. “That’s not the case anymore. We need to change that dichotomy. We need to change that dynamic because we all have got to live in these communities together. Another resident asked about issues with long probation sentences. Listenbee said that Krasner prefers the idea of shorter probations because “they get violated and they go back to jail. According to criminologist studies, Listenbee said, most violations of probation occur within the first 12 months, which also contributed to Krasner’s opinion on the matter.

t’s that time of year in which high school seniors are finalizing college decisions. Younger students are likely proud of the strides they have made in the classroom from September to now. Others may have faced personal hardships that presented unexpected challenges in and out of the classroom. No matter what the story is, each of these students is very deserving of recognition. Teachers, counselors and administrators, do you have a Rising Star in your classroom? If yes, it’s time to share the stories of these first graders through high school seniors you feel are worthy of Rising Star consideration. The South Philly Review and Grays Ferry-based Young Chances Foundation are once again teaming up to recognize your standout candidates. The only requirement is the student must reside in South Philly or attend a South Philly school in the 19145, 19146, 19147 or 19148 Zip Codes. Parents and guardians, we know you believe your child is well deserving of being included on this list, but nominations need to come from the school.

Being a straight-A student or valedictorian are both strong points, but not the only criteria being taken into consideration. We also want to hear about the talented individuals who excel in the classroom as well as numerous extracurricular activities. It can be anything from athletics to school clubs to volunteer work. If you have a Rising Star who fits the bill, send us a nomination letter, 250 to 350 words, describing what makes your candidate stand out from the pack. What is the reason(s) for nominating this student? What academic achievements has this student earned during the 2017-18 school year? What does this student hope to be when he/she grows up? These are just a few questions meant to help get the conversation started. All of the nominations will be reviewed by the selection committee, with the winners appearing in the special June 6 Rising Stars edition. Please submit nominations by Tuesday, April 30.
