Oregon Ave., has organized a veterans benefit on Sunday, May 7 from 2 to 8 p.m. Yet, rather than reflecting on servicemen who lost their lives, this initiative will help veterans who are homeless, along with sending proceeds to the Police Survivor’s Fund and the Fire Widow’s Fund. At the event, boasting the tagline, “a good time for a good cause, Toll Man Joe’s will offer draft beer and boxed wine. Additionally, a variety of finger foods, roast beef and pasta, all made inhouse, will be available. howcasing talent is not a new thing for Dawn Noel. Her award-winning talent dates back to her childhood days in the old neighborhood where she earned the titles of Little Miss Sunshine and Little Miss Philadelphia. Those who want to learn what Noel has been up to since those days at 15th and Porter streets can simply IMDB her. The awards are a little more prestigious these days. The actress, writer and producer is making a name for herself in Hollywood, winning the Audience and Best Actress Awards for “22 Years at the 2016 Los Angeles Movie Awards. The award-winning short film is now in the Philly spotlight as a screening of “22 Years will take place at the Philadelphia Independent Film Awards tomorrow night (May 5) from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the International House Philadelphia, 3701 Chestnut St. Noel is especially excited at the opportunity to come home and share her nomination for Best Short Film with family and friends in the area. “We’re really excited because we’ve been to film festivals all over the world, but it took a second for Philly to accept our film, Noel said. “I’m so excited for my family and friends to see where I started, where I’m going and where I will continue to go. I feel really proud of this film, and I hope Philly comes out to support us. The 16-minute short film, in which Noel is the producer and star, is based around the experience of a young woman named Avi who receives an unexpected call from her past. After not hearing from her estranged father for 22 years, one day she receives an email from him asking her to reconnect. Having spent more than two decades creating a life for herself without him, she questions whether to embrace the opportunity or to leave her father in the past. “This is my story, Noel, who worked on the film for three years, said. “The film has a little bit of truth to it, but it’s still a work of fiction. I used feelings and emotions from my own personal life in combination with a borrowed story from a family member, while embellishing it to have it make sense and to be more dramatic. While the plot of “22 years may not be identical to Noel’s own experience, she believes the story line is relevant and relatable to most people because every parent and child go through their ups and downs. In her own life, this was no different. Although her father was there for her physically during her stages of growing up, she was able to channel the emotions from their differences into her role as Avi in “22 Years. “My family was old school to some degree, and me being an artist, I just saw things from a different perspective, Noel said. “I was always a little ‘out there’ as an artist, and I never saw color, race or gender. Sometimes parents and children just don’t get along, and there was a point in my life where my father and I didn’t see eye-to-eye for awhile.

To the Editor: First of all, let me give Tom Cardella a high-five with my right hand for being the soldier that he is. Please heal quickly, Tom. It is so interesting that you discovered that the Latin word for left is “sinister, which in our language means menacing. You might also like to know that the Latin word for right is “dexter, which is the root of dexterity or skillful use of the hands. (You cannot win, Tom.) Seems there is much going on in the City, as spring emerges, including South Philly’s East Passyunk Crossing. Thanks to Lindsey Nolen for the report on the Flavors on the Avenue festival (“Street Festival of Flavors, April 27) that was held on Sunday. Yum! Also thanks to Editor Bill Gelman for covering all the neighborhood bases. As a retired teacher, I was particularly pleased to read about the young arts activists from Kirkbride School who went to City Council to demand more funding for arts education in the school district. Arts education is not a frill but a necessary component of a well balanced curriculum. The arts expand the mind in ways that cannot be achieved elsewhere. So kudos to them and their teachers. Oh, by the way, Tom, kudos is derived from the Greek “kydos, which means praise or renown. Feel better! Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

The value of Best Value To the Editor: When I took office more than a year ago, I pledged to run a city government that delivers efficient, effective services to every single Philadelphian. Part of that promise involves modernizing the way the city hires contractors and purchases goods. To accomplish that, I need your help. The existing rules on contracting and procurement – unchanged since 1951 — are sorely in need of an overhaul. The rules force the city to award contracts to the business with the lowest price deemed responsible to carry out the work. Equally important factors — particularly quality of work, past performance and diversity — cannot be considered. On May 16, Philadelphia voters will have the opportunity to change those outdated rules, by voting on an important ballot question in the city’s municipal primary election. Known as “Best Value, this proposal would allow the Procurement Office to award public works contracts based on overall best value to the city rather than price alone. Best Value would apply to big construction projects undertaken by the city that are designed to improve the lives of residents, businesses and tourists alike. I’m convinced it will open the door to more continued on page 6

continued from page 4 qualified businesses than ever before. These businesses know how to get the job done the right way and can provide the highest quality service for every contract. Right now, unfortunately, some of these contractors feel shut out of the process due to the antiquated laws. Other cities have long seen the true value in Best Value — of the 20 largest U.S. cities, 18 now practice it. Only Philadelphia and Indianapolis do not. The federal government and the commonwealth of Pennsylvania are also guided by Best Value practices. It’s time for OUR city to catch up. Best Value just makes sense. It will allow the city to get the most of every dollar spent, and include more of the local and minority-owned businesses that contribute so much to our regional economy and the hardworking fabric of our city. These are the same businesses and work-

ers that keep our wheels spinning, our infrastructure moving and make Philadelphia strong. Adopting Best Value is the next layer of the foundation that will make our city stronger. It is, quite simply, the best value for taxpayers, business owners and anyone who believes in better days ahead for Philadelphia. On May 16, I urge you to vote “yes for Best Value. Jack O’Neill is the only candidate for District Attorney who actually prosecuted homicide cases. Think about that for a minute. Philadelphia has one of the highest homicide rates of any big city in the country, yet only Jack O’Neill has prosecuted homicide cases during his decade of service as a prosecutor in the D.A.’s office. TOLL MAN JOE’S continued from page 1 Band, South Philly String Band, Woodland String Band, 2nd Street Irish Society and Pipe and Drum. Tom Penrose, who co-owns the sports bar along with his wife, Laurie, set out around the New Year to find a charity they could fundraise for and support. However, after recieving backlash on Facebook during the November election for providing catering services to both Democratic and Republican parties, the owners decided they wanted to find a non-profit organization that had no political affiliation. “We found that the election cycle was polarizing that when catering to either the Democrats or Republicans, the opposite side would feel strongly against it, Tom Penrose said. “So, when we were looking to get behind a charity right after Christmas, we knew we wanted to find something that let us give back to the community and create a more positive outcome. IN SEARCHING FOR organizations, he first went through all previous donations the restaurant had given out. Through this,

Penrose, an Army veteran who served from 1984 to 1987, realized that his restaurant had donated Thanksgiving dinner last year to the Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House. “We wanted to find a veterans organization anyway since I’m a vet, but we also realized that there are a few homeless veterans who live behind the property on Interstate 95, so the Comfort House was a natural fit, Penrose, 51, said. “I met with William Champion, the treasurer of the organization’s board of directors, and they do fabulous work, and we thought this was something good we could really get behind. The mission of the Comfort House is to provide homeless veterans a chance to start over, and become productive members of society. The organization provides homeless veterans with shelter and meals, and helps them to connect with the Department of Veterans Affairs to find other agencies that can help them obtain their benefits and more long-term assistance. After Penrose committed to helping the Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House and to organize this benefit, he decided to expand the charity to support the Police Survivor’s Fund and the Fire Widow’s Fund as

Regardless of whether these numbers hold true, he plans to make the benefit an annual event in the years to come, creating a positive outcome and spreading awareness.

Is that what Hollywood needed right now — remakes? I’m having trouble figuring out what the difference is between a franchise movie and a remake? Is “Fast and Furious 3 a remake or a franchise series? It’s not as if Hollywood is intent on remaking great movies? They’re not remaking Casablanca. They’re remaking Jumanji. Has there been a clamor to remake “Jumanji? I must’ve missed it. Even Broadway has become nothing but remakes, or as they call them on the Great White Way, “revivals. They’re bringing “Hello Dolly back with Bette Midler. In the latest version, Midler is still a yenta, but in a bath house in New York. For a while, Charles Dickens was a hot commodity on Broadway. All you had to was put some music to a Dickens novel and you had a box office smash — “Oliver, “Nicholas Nickleby, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood, “A Christmas Carol. All hits. Now “Hamilton will probably start a new trend. We’ll probably see a string of musicals about each of the founding fathers— Washington, Jefferson, Ben Franklin. And hip-hop music was so big in “Hamilton, figure on seeing it used again. Jefferson rapping with Sally Hemings would be a natural fit. Me, I don’t have time to see musicals on Broadway or even to go to the movies often. Why? I don’t mind telling you. I’ve been fixated on Trump’s first 100 days. I barely got this gig tonight—the promoter was going to just run a tape of a Sean Spicer press conference. Critics say Trump is not growing into his role as president. I respectfully disagree. Not once has he taken another ride on that TMZ bus with Billy Bush. Incidentally, Trump just found out that Billy Bush wasn’t the 43rd president. And he’s learned how to delegate. When in doubt, he lets Jared and Ivanka make the decisions. Jared and Ivanka are to Trump what Cersei was to Tommen in “Game of Thrones. You want the crisis in North Korea solved, Ivanka will allow Kim to share 25 percent of the profits in her new clothing line. Jared will get Kim a better haircut and ownership in an NBA franchise. (From then on, NBA will stand for Nuclear Ban Agreement). And instead of worrying about ICBMs raining down on them, Angelenos will wind up eating more Korean BBQ. Liberals underestimate Trump just like

they did Ronald Reagan. While liberals were making fun of Reagan for “Bedtime for Bonzo, Reagan became president, got re-elected, got Sinatra to become a Republican, and got an airport named after himself. It’s going to be the same with Trump. Mark my words. On any of the big issues of the day. Trump has the liberal media confused. Take the border wall for example. Trump started big. Mexico will pay for the $30 billion wall. Then, he said, well, they’ll pay for it later after we put a down payment on building the wall or I’ll shut down the government. Now, he postponed thinking about the wall until September because illegal border crossings are down over 60 percent (Trump is so loopy even the Mexicans don’t want to come here). Presto. Trump takes credit for reducing illegal immigration and being reasonable by not shutting down the government. I predict he’ll do the same thing with health care.Trump has the media confused on where he stands on health care. I’m not confused at all. He wants to repeal Obamacare and create a new plan with lower premiums and better care for everybody. Hell, That’s M&Ms candy. You have your great tasting chocolate without it melting in your hands — although, I have to ask: Unless you’re under 6 years old, was having chocolate melt in your hands ever a pressing problem? Anyway, Trump knows that he’s given Paul Ryan an impossible task. But he dislikes Ryan and wants to see him fail. To Trump, Ryan’s only redeeming feature is he’s a safe prom date for your daughter. This is a guy who couldn’t get to first base with an intentional walk. Health care’s failure becomes Ryan’s failure. Continuing Obamacare with its increasing prices and lack of competition is the Democrats’ failure. And Trump walks away and says “I told you so.! Trump has cleverly set the bar so low that if he stays away from Twitter for a couple of days, they want to put him on Mount Rushmore. His biggest accomplishment the first 100 days is to get Spicer a navy suit. While liberals swear at Trump, more than 90 percent of his voters still swear by him. “The only question left is which airport they’ll name for him in 2024. (At that point the dream ended. Or was it a nightmare?) A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

howcasing talent is not a new thing for Dawn Noel.

B?<;IJOB;I THE AWARD-WINNING ACTRESS, dancer and producer credits this open-mindedness from which her family disconnect arose to her educational experience in the arts. Having attended the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Noel spent her teen years mostly in Center City, where she began to see her friend groups change and amass great diversity. “I definitely have my roots in South Philly, but I was just so adventurous and wanted to travel the world and get of that box that a lot of people live in, Noel said. “[Center City] sparked a need for me to be around different people and cultures. She continued her education by achieving her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of the Arts and soon after began dancing professionally for Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Co., Ballet Hispanico and Elisa Monte Dance companies. From there, she moved to New York City, making her mark on Broadway with the groundbreaking musical, “The Lion King. “I was so excited when I landed my first Broadway show, Noel said. “To this day,

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

‘Lion King’ is my favorite show, and it definitely was a dream come true. Also, so many of my friends were in the show, so it was nice to work with people I knew. Noel has toured with Madonna and Jennifer Lopez as a featured dancer, gained television and commercial roles — including “All My Children, “NCIS and “Glee — and has appeared on the big screen. Proving her success in her latest endeavor, she won Best Actress for “22 Years at the Charlotte Black Film Festival, International NYC Film Festival, Women’s International Film Festival and Velvet Rope Film festival. “I love what I do. There’s so much of the world to see, and some people just get stuck, Noel said. “I always knew that as an artist I wanted to change people’s lives. I wanted to give them a different perspective on life. Noel added that along with her adventurous spirit, the desire to change someone’s perspective as they leave a theater has continued to be the driving factor in her work. Thus, she hopes as people watch “22 Years, they can think back to a situation where they too can relate to the film and the emotions it evokes. A>@

When talking about the film “22 Years, Fred Thomas Jr. needs to be included in the conversation. The former resident of 15th and Wharton streets plays a prominent role as the film’s director. Although he now resides in Los Angeles, he too credits the City of Brotherly Love as helping shape him into the person, and director, he is today.

“There is no place like South Philly, Thomas said. “I had the best childhood growing up in the streets of Philly, and it made me a well-rounded person. Being a black city kid attending Catholic school and who was able make friends with Italian and Irish dudes, and yet hang on some of the tough corners of my neighborhood and find the good in people who made bad choices, helped with my development in making the right choices as a teen. Thomas recalls experiencing vast support from family members, including his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and neighbors. Through this support and the opportunities he had to witness true “South Philly events, such as a championship parade on Broad Street, he grew to understand strength and camaraderie, which instilled within him a drive to push forward to achieve his goals and believe in himself. Growing up in the former St. Rita’s Parish and attending St. John Neumann, the now 47-year-old has always found an interest in directing. Thomas remembers getting the other kids at St. Rita’s to perform skits he’d mimic from “Saturday Night Live,

After graduating from Neumann, he attended Lincoln University for his undergraduate degree, and then went on to complete a variety of internships at places such as Society Hill Playhouse, WYBE and MTV. “I wanted to get my hands on film equipment to make movies, so I applied to Temple’s grad program,â€? Thomas, who attained his master’s degree in film and media arts, said. In the years since obtaining his master’s, Thomas has been nominated for seven NAACP theater awards and won awards for “Best Director,â€? “Best Playwrightâ€? and “Best Producerâ€? for his play “12’x9.’â€? He also founded Temple University’s Black Media Collective, was one of the original friends who spawned the Budweiser “Whassup Guys!â€? from the iconic Budweiser campaign, directed a play for the show R&B Divas LA called “Divaloguesâ€? and produced several plays with Don B. Welch Productions. Despite having worked on projects all over the U.S., from New York to Los Angeles to Atlanta, Thomas crossed paths with Dawn Noel when a mutual actress friend, Anisa Nyell Johnson, introduced the two. Realizing he went to school with Noel’s brothers, and that they grew up just

15 blocks apart with many overlapping friends, helped spark their friendship that ultimately led to his involvement in the film “22 Years. “She pitched me her story and I liked the theme and what she wanted to say about the process one can go through to forgive, Thomas said. “So we figured this may be a great Philly collaboration, and we decided to team up. Thus, returning home to Philly for its premiere at the Philadelphia Independent Film Awards brings Thomas an equal sense of excitement. “Performing in Philly is always amazing, Thomas said. “I was there a few years back with my play ‘12’x9’ which I wrote and directed. We performed at Freedom Theatre and the response was overwhelming. He added that, for other South Philly kids hoping to become a director, he advises they watch lots of movies, read lots of scripts and books while writing down what is liked about each and to talk about movies with others. Additionally, he suggests visiting museums and seeing art, get outside to view nature and take in all surroundings. “First direct what you know to hone your skills and start adding other pieces of the world to your craft and style, he said. “Most of all believe in yourself and find your passion. A>@

W DOO EHJDQ LQ 6RXWK 3KLOO\ Âľ It doesn’t matter if he is on Geator Gold Radio or hosting a show in another state, when Jerry “The Geator with the Heaterâ€? Blavat takes a walk down memory lane, he will likely have a story or two to share about growing up in the neighborhood. It doesn’t matter if he is headlining at the Kimmel Center or hosting a radio segment, he never forgets where it all began. “You never forget who took you to your first dance,â€? he said. “South Philly is my home.â€? On Friday, May 12, Blavat is bringing it back home for a special occasion — A Night with the Geator presented by Liscio’s Bakery at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. Attendees will enjoy a walk down memory lane with stories about the songs Blavat grew up listening to, while teaching his favorite dance moves. The Geator knows them all. The man, after all, was winning Bandstand dance contests at age 13 — contestants were supposed to be 14. By age 14, he was on the dance committee. He would head to West Philly at 3 p.m. following the school day at Southeast Catholic and later Bishop Neumann. Blavat was who picked the music for host Bob Horn to play. Where there is music, the Geator is never too far behind. “We all appreciate music,â€? he said. “I am a lucky guy. Through my music, I have the ability to bring people together, make peo-

ple smile and make people feel young. Like a well-aged wine from the Napa Valley, the Geator is legendary when it comes to the South Philly scene. His face is one of the many famous ones painted on the South Philly Remix Mural at 1532 S. Broad St. that was unveiled last year. Frankie Avalon, Eddie Fisher, Fabian Forte, Bobby Rydell, Al Martino, Chubby Checker, Charlie Gracie, James Darren and Danny Cedrone are the others. While many of them have moved outside the area or passed away, some five-plus decades later, the Geator keeps the party going several nights a week. No matter where the gathering is — Memories in Margate or a St. Monica grade school reunion — don’t expect to stay seated. After all, Blavat, who was a member of Bishop Neumann’s first graduating class in 1958, has been doing this since his teeen-age years when he hosted dance parties at the Dixon House. These days, “Heat Wave by Martha and the Vandellas remains one of the biggest hits at his events, and it includes a rap that he created to go along with the song. For now, there is no slowing him down. “Anything that is good never grows old, just like the Geator, he said. A>@ Tickets for A Night with The Geator are $35 in advance ($45 at the door) and include entertainment, as well as a dinner buffet from Penns Landing Caterers. They can be purchased at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., today (May 4) from 1 to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, May 10th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit nmg.ticketleap. com/blavat to purchase tickets online.

hen talking about the best basketball players ever to come out of South Philly, Lionel Simmons is a name that belongs at the top of the list. He has the numbers and results to back it up. Look back at the all-time history of the South Philadelphia High boys basketball program, and Simmons appears at the top of the scoring list with 1,539 points. He would lead the Rams to a Public League championship and continue making an impact playing for the La Salle University Explorers before going on to play professionally for the Sacramento Kings. Now, the player known as the L-Train is circling back to where the story begins. On Sunday, May 21, Simmons, Class of 1986, will headline the Southern 2017 Athletic Hall of Fame Class. Gerald Scott (1970) and Tarez L. Williams (1984) will be inducted, too. The annual dinner and ceremony is taking place at the Adelphia Restaurant, 1750 Clements Bridge Road, in Deptford, N.J. When talking about his career at Southern, the 1986 Public League championship game is one of those moments that stands out above the rest. The Rams defeated University City for the title thanks to a dominating performance from their offensive leader. His final stat line included a double-double of 21 points and 18 rebounds, earning MVP honors in the process. But it’s what he did on the collegiate scene that put Simmons in the national spotlight. He finished

his La Salle career with 3,217 points, which ranks third all-time in NCAA history. He scored in double figures in 115 consecutive games, which is an NCAA record. As a result, the individual accolades kept coming his way. As a senior, he received two of college basketball’s most prestigious prizes — the Naismith College Player of the Year and the John R. Wooden Award. The Southern Hall of Fame is just the newest on a long list that includes the National College Basketball Hall of Fame, the Big 5 Hall of Fame, Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame and La Salle Athletic Hall of Fame. Williams was best known for her speed — recordbreaking speed. She broke the school record while running in the 4x100 at the Penn Relays. She still holds Southern records in the 100- and 200-meter dash.Williams is also the first female athlete in school history to receive a full athletic scholarship, attending North Carolina A&T State University. Scott made his mark as an All-Public running back. During the 1969 season, he was all-state and allscholastic as a defensive back. On offense, he averaged 145 yards per game. He played in the All-City All-Star Game, and received the Sullivan Award for the best Public League athlete. Scott also earned AllPublic recognition in baseball as a three-year starter at second. One of the career highlights was playing at Connie Mack Stadium for the city title. A>@ -By Bill Gelman

Because, while the Eagles think they’re going to get some immediate impact from the 2017 draft class — No. 1 pick, defensive end Derek Barnett, and third-round draft pick, cornerback Rasul Douglas, both will have opportunities to

start right away — there is also the element of future years in the draft equation. “You have to think of not only 2017 but the years beyond this season, executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said over the weekend. “We have to see how this plays out and how these players develop and fit into our system and what we’re doing here. That’s why the key player in the entire draft for the Eagles could be their second-round pick, cornerback Sidney Jones. He was on his way to a top 10 to 15 pick when he blew out his Achilles tendon during a workout at the University of Washington on March 11. Jones slid in the draft into the second round, and the Eagles eagerly selected him, fully aware that his 2017 season is in jeopardy.

With Jones and Douglas, the Eagles think their cornerback deficiencies could be solved. It’s just that neither we, nor they, will know for at least another season, and probably longer, if that twosome is the second coming of Lito Sheppard and Sheldon Brown, taken together in the 2002 draft and keys to the team’s heady success over the next several years. “Those two are both very talented players and they’re going to need to be developed just like every young player, vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas said. “It’s going to take some time. We know that with every player. We’re happy to have gotten both. The way the Eagles see it, the first three picks are future cornerstones. And the other

‘You have to think of not only 2017 but the years beyond this season,’ -Howie Roseman

five picks will have their chances to make the roster, earn playing time and become stars. The thing about the NFL Draft is, you just never know. Taking a 20- or 21-year-old college boy and projecting him into a league of 27-year-old men is always an inexact science. With that, there is the understanding that the Eagles’ roster isn’t complete. There are questions about the running back position — who, exactly, is the team’s go-to player there? Jones’ absence for 2017 means the cornerback room is still thin. The depth at linebacker is still suspect. But the draft for the Eagles, they think, was a success. Maybe not sexy, but a success. As the City of Philadelphia and the 250,000 people enjoyed the show, the Eagles did their work by largely allowing the draft to come to them. Now they’ll find out more, as the draft labels go away and the players take the field and the Eagles find out what they really have from the draft class of 2017. A>@
