omedian Michelle Wolf was a big story last week. You would think in a week when the leaders of North and South Korea officially ended their war, a lame performance by Wolf at the White House Correspondents Dinner would hardly cause a ripple. You would be wrong. How may of you watched the White House Correspondents Dinner on cable TV or C-SPAN? How many of you knew there was a TV channel called C-SPAN? How many of you stayed up until 10:35 at night to watch Michelle Wolf? How many of you had ever heard of Michelle Wolf before she appeared at the White House Correspondents Dinner? The White House Correspondents Dinner has always been based on the questionable premise that it’s a good thing when members of the news media socialize with the Washington political establishment. Probably the same folks who thought the world was clamoring for NEW COKE. To this highly combustible mix, add a comedian who is paid to poke fun at the president and the assembled politicians. What could possibly go wrong? (White House Correspondents Dinners are so bad, I almost would prefer to attend a Trump rally. Almost.) The wisest decision Trump has made so far is to stay away from these disasters. The ideal comedian for the event would’ve been Bob Hope, but he’s dead. SPR readers choose Top Docs of South Philly

W

ith political primary season in full swing, this edition of South Philly Review puts the focus on nominations of another sort – your choice for the area’s best medical professionals. We asked and you responded, highlighting local general practitioners and specialists who stand out.

Dr. Michael J. Attanasio, DO

Dr. Michael J. Attanasio, DO, a board-certified Doctor of Osteopathy in family practice, has more than 22 years of medical experience. A graduate of Villanova University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, the South Philly-based physician focuses on the Patient Centered Medical Home model, providing care for patients even beyond the walls of his practice. This approach aligns with the ideas behind osteopathy. “The reason I went to osteopathy school is because there’s a philosophy that persists that emphasizes hands-on and touching and caring and being part of a patient’s life,” he said. In 2015, his practice, Ritner Medical Associates located at 17th and Ritner streets, was one of the first practices in South Philadelphia to receive the NCQA Patient Centered Medical Home Recognition. Attanasio, who has has spoken at PCMH Congress on various topics related to the stresses and successes of Primary Care, continues to perform rounds at Methodist Hospital, St. Monica’s Manor and Pennsylvania Hospital. Although he can be found treating patients around the city, Attanasio says there’s no place he’d rather serve than South Philly. “I just can’t imagine practicing anywhere besides South Philadelphia, he said. “What I was searching for that’s really embodied in there - I’m still really in a community in South Philly. I don’t want to leave the neighborhood, because I really feel like I’m connected to the people.” By establishing a family practice, he not only builds long lasting relationships with his patients, but thoroughly immerses them in preventive care. While he’s humbled for the recognition as a Top Doc, Attanasio says the success of his practice stems from his staff. “If you want to do the things we want to do every day,” he said, “you can’t do it with just the doctor trying - it’s a full team effort.” 1701 W Ritner St, Philadelphia, PA 19145 (215) 336-2145

Dr. Joseph P. Badolato, DO Dr. Joseph P. Badolato, DO, has been practicing medicine for 35 years. The East Passyunk-based doctor specializes in family practice and primary podiatric medicine, according to the Jefferson University Hospitals website. He earned his medical degree at Philadelphia

Badolato is described as going above and beyond to ensure patients’ health and satisfaction by patients who nominated him for Top Docs. “His bedside manner, courtesy, concerns and caring ways for his patients and their families is second to none,” reads a nomination letter. “He is very passionate about his work!” 1818 East Passyunk Avenue Philadelphia PA 19148 (215) 468-2553

Dr. Barry Bravette, MD “It’s quite an honor to be looked at in this light, especially in this part of the city where there are such a large number of doctors and especially cardiologists,” Bravette said upon learning he won the award. “I truly appreciate that people considered me for this award.” Bravette has been at Jefferson University Hospital in South Philly ever since he interned there in 1985. He also completed his residency and fellowship there. “The most rewarding thing is just forming bonds with people who become more than patients,” he said. “They become people who we share interests.” 1703 S. Dr. Katie M. Dougherty, DO Dr. Katie M. Dougherty, DO, a graduate of Maria Goretti Catholic High School and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, has been practicing medicine for more than 20 years. Dougherty is board certified in both family practice and primary podiatric medicine. She is affiliated with both Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. While studying at Rosemont College, the South Philly native found an aptitude for osteopathics, growing interest in the idea of intently listening and touching patients while examining them. “I think the holistic approach to medicine was always an interest of mine,” she said. “It’s such an intuitive part of my training.” She promotes preventive care, encouraging her patients to take vitamins to avoid having to take prescriptions. Dougherty is also a strong advocate for young people thinking about going into medicine. She feels it is crucial, especially for young women, to have role models in the field. Serving South Philly led to her building enduring relationships with patients.

“I think unless you were born and raised in South Philly, you don’t get the compassion that we naturally have. I treat my patients like family because they’re like family to me,” she said. “I think that’s the intimacy and uniqueness of South Philadelphia.” As far as being considered a Top Doc, Dougherty has reciprocal admiration for the community she treats. “I think the privilege is all mine because I enjoy the patients so much,” she said “I’m compassionate about patient care. It’s mutual respect.” 2534 S 18th St, Philadelphia, PA 19145 (215) 463-4363

Dr. Peter Honig, DO

Dr. Peter Honig, DO, has been practicing medicine for 32 years. The Newbold-based doctor specializes in family and community medicine and primary care, according to the Jefferson University Hospitals website. He earned his medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by an internship at Delaware Valley Medical Center. Honig, who is board certified in family practice and hospice and palliative medicine, is affiliated with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Honig is described as a concerned doctor who makes patients feel like friends by a patient who nominated him for Top Docs. Along with attending to physical health, Honig expresses care for patients’ emotional wellbeing, too. “He listens so patiently and answers with good advice,” reads a nomination letter. “I love him and am very thankful for his good service.” 1805 S Broad Street Philadelphia PA 19148 Phone: (215) 467-7666

Dr. Asif Hussain, MD

After stops at Northwestern University for undergrad, eight years of medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, and working as the medical director for Jefferson-Methodist Heart Center, Hussain decided to open his own private practice in cardiology in 2011. He’s very proud of becoming one of Philly’s top docs. “I’m surprised and I’m very grateful,” he said. See TOP DOCS, page 8>>

emocrats must regain control of the House and Senate in Harrisburg because what happens there affects our daily lives. In the past, low voter turnout led us to lose influence over the state agencies and institutions that are supposed to be working for us. So please fellow Democrats, step up alongside us on May 15th and vote in the primary election. We will be enthusiastically joining our South Philly neighbors in voting for Elizabeth Fiedler for state representative in Pennsylvania’s 184th District. We know that Elizabeth will truly act as the eyes, ears, and voice for South Philadelphians in state government. We need her in Harrisburg fighting to make college education affordable again. We, and many of our friends and neighbors, recognize that a college education offers boundless opportunities to build a better future. Pennsylvania’s state colleges fill a critical role preparing Pennsylvanians to lead and succeed. Yet our poorly funded state college system means our graduates are now burdened with one of the highest levels of tuition debt in the nation. Moreover, many parents have depleted their savings trying to send their kids to what should be state-supported affordable schools. Fiedler will work to remove this costly burden from the backs of the people. She will fight to make non-tax-paying corporations and other fat cats in our city and state contribute, again, their fair share to the operations of the commonwealth. This increased and more equitable approach will help ensure adequate funding for our fine college system and other programs that benefit everyone in our city and across the state. Inky report raises stink on public notices Publishers, sheriff’s office incensed over recent inquiry on cost-benefit of sheriff sale ads By Kerith Gabriel SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

L

et’s just say it’s been a weird week inside the Philadelphia Office of the Sheriff. The city office, spearheaded by Sheriff Jewell Williams, has been forced to prove its worth after a Philadelphia Inquirer report raised questions into allegedly egregious spending from the Sheriff’s Office to host monthly and quarterly sheriff sale advertising in daily and weekly newspapers, as well as other community publications. The aftermath led to Terry Egger, publisher of Philadelphia Media Network, which owns the Inquirer, Daily News and Philly.com, attempting to

distance the company itself from its own sheriff sale ad revenue, coincidentally on the week the Daily News was scheduled to host a 16-page insert. Egger noted that PMN will honor its agreement with the Sheriff’s Office, but ran the insert pro bono. The Inquirer received $1.6 million in sheriff sale ads last year – a hefty share of the $8 million pot divided among 20 regional publications. Those publications include two Newspaper Media Group holdings: Philadelphia Weekly and the South Philly Review. The initial report and subsequent distancing from PMN officials incensed not only Williams but many leaders of Philadelphia-based publications, who claim the Inquirer report sought to devalue the worth and effectiveness of diverse, eth-

nic community newspapers in its hosting of sheriff sale advertisements. The group of newspaper leaders was led by Mark Segal, head of the Philadelphia Multicultural Newspaper Association and owner and publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, who penned an op-ed that was submitted to the Inquirer’s Editorial Board. Segal claims the op-ed which ran in the paper’s May 2 edition was a shell of his original submission. Segal also noted the original Inquirer report failed to include numbers indicating that sheriff’s sale ads got a better return for the city from free community publications – which charge a lower rate than the Inquirer on a monthly basis at no cost to readers. “We need to make the point and have [the InSee ADS, page 24>>

Dr. Norman Tabas, DDS According to his website, Dr. Norman Tabas “is proud to have been providing innovative and attentive dental care to the South Philly community for more than 30 years. He graduated in 1980 from The Temple University

School of Dentistry with his dental degree. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and the Southern District Dental Society. “Dr. Tabas has been my general dentist for over 20 years, a nomination letter read. “I have recommended Dr. Tabas to my friends and relatives, and all are pleased with the thoroughness of his work. 2534 S. Dr. Kenneth Wasserman, MD

Even though Wasserman was born and raised in New York City, he still loves South Philly, a place he’s been since 1988. “I went to med school at Hahnneman, he said. “We did a lot of rotations in South Philly. What’s great for Wasserman is that he gets to combine two of his favorite practices: dermatology and baseball. Why baseball? Because in addition to owning his own private practice in South Philly, he’s the official team dermatologist of the Baltimore Orioles. In addition, he’s actually the co-founder of the MLB’s skin cancer screening initiative, which encourages all players to get checked for skin cancer. 1817 S. Pa. voters set to head to polls in May 15 party primaries By Tom Waring SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

D

emocratic and Republican voters will head to the polls next Tuesday to nominate candidates for U.S. Senate, governor, lieutenant governor, U.S. House, the state Senate and state House. Voters will also choose members of state committee and two city committee people per party, per division. Independents and members of minor

parties will be able to vote on three proposed amendments to the city’s Home Rule Charter. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For a sample ballot or to find information on polling locations, call 215686-1590 or visit philadelphiavotes. com. ... In the race for U.S. Senate, two-term Democratic Sen. Bob Casey Jr. is unopposed in the primary. Casey will face the winner of the

Republican primary between U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta and state Rep. Jim Christiana. Barletta has the state party’s backing. ... Gov. Tom Wolf is unopposed in the Democratic primary. The Republican candidates are state Sen. Scott Wagner, Allegheny County businessman Paul Mango and Allegheny County lawyer Laura Ellsworth. Ellsworth last week unveiled her first television commercial, a 30-second spot that starts with her turning off

CARDELLA: Politically ‘incorrupt’

<<Continued from page 1 the rich and famous, barbs that landed with all the sharpness of cotton balls. In recent years, the dinner has become a place where comedians come to die. Last year it was Larry Wilmore. 2018 gave us Michelle Wolf … the perfect icon for this uberpartisan year. While conservatives damn Wolf, liberals have made her a martyr to their cause. With a delivery that had all the charm of nails on a chalkboard, Wolf slammed the usual political suspects. Even the news media was deservedly not immune. She especially went after White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Some – I was one of them – thought she also attacked Sanders’ personal appearance. Others didn’t interpret it that way. I’m willing to give Wolf the benefit of the doubt here. Sanders is fair game. From her podium at press conferences, she seems to enjoy sparring with members of the news media. By the nature of the business, she gets the last word. She should be able to take it. But wonder of wonders, Wolf seems to have done the impossible. She’s Sneering Sarah a sympathetic object of pity to many folks, who thought she was sooo brave to stay in the room during Wolf’s verbal attack. Wolf liberally sprinkled her monologue with the P-word and F-word. She was as blue as the chords on a BB King guitar solo. What she wasn’t was funny. You can use profanity to emphasize a point or even to make that point funnier. But when you’re not funny, that profanity just comes across as either gross or mean-spirited. Profanity can be a crutch for unfunny comedians. Wolf’s performance was just another example of how coarse our culture has become. The “hip” folks among us tend to see those who cringe at comedic profanity (funny or not) as old fuddy-duddys. This duddy roars at Sarah Silverman and Chris Rock. Humor is complicated. What makes one person laugh can make another person yawn or wince. I understand that. Whether or not Wolf was funny, though, didn’t seem to matter to

her defenders. She attacked their favorite targets, Trump and his White House. But that’s a low bar for any comic. Add one more “low.” You can quote a Trump tweet and get a laugh. Sorry, Michelle, you get no credit for barely clearing that very low bar. On the other hand, conservatives are experts at fake outrage. The Right is aghast at Michelle Wolf’s four-letter words. What if the kids were watching? Right? Hell, you don’t seem to mind Trump’s behavior. Didn’t you still vote for him as your president after hearing him brag about grabbing women’s private parts? I don’t remember you complaining when he mocked a disabled reporter at a campaign rally. Does the possibility of his going around having sex with porn stars and playmates while his wife was pregnant and buying their silence give you any pause at all? Hell, Michelle Wolf is just some comedian promoting her new late-night NETFLIX show. Donald Trump is sitting in the White House turning the office of the presidency into a reality TV show. Please save your outrage for where it belongs. Enough already. Let’s be clear. I’m not blaming Michelle Wolf for the debacle. The real debacle is that she has become just another partisan political issue. I’m blaming you liberals and conservatives who see every issue as part of the partisan divide. You who automatically lineup on the issue based on your politics instead of the facts. And who, pray tell, is responsible for booking Michelle Wolf for the White House Correspondents Dinner? I’m blaming you too. Michelle Wolf just did what she does. That’s her act. But your job is to know your audience. Apparently, you don’t. There must be a better way for the organization to give out scholarship money without embarrassing itself. How about a charity softball game? Maybe a dunking stool manned by Kellyanne Conway or better yet EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt? I’d pay money for a toss at Pruitt.

a TV showing negative ads from Wagner and Mango. She speaks of creating jobs, improving education, breaking the opiate epidemic and reducing taxes and education. “Mr. Mango and Sen. Wagner might be confused by this spot,” said Ellsworth spokeswoman Brianna Buczkowski. “Laura talks about putting people ahead of politics, creating jobs, bolstering education and reforming Harrisburg. Their attack ads never bother with those things, and they might need a refresher course on the actual issues

people care about.” Also last week, Ellsworth captured the backing of the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Patriot-News, of Harrisburg. The Inquirer on Sunday said Ellsworth “brings depth to her understanding of the issues facing the state.” “Her understanding of the state’s priorities – job creation, education, workforce development, among others – is supported by fact-finding and realistic thinking that goes beyond sound bites,” the newspaper said. racie is a super sweet, 6-yearold Cane Corso/mastiff mix who was found as a stray tied to a pole! How anyone could do that to her we’ll never understand! Her sad past has definitely not defined how her future will play out! Gracie is a big sweet love at 97 pounds and has been waiting for 10 months to find her forever family! She is a total gentle giant. Gracie adores children and has no trouble plopping herself right on their lap! She loves spending some time playing outside, or just snuggling on the couch. She is also house trained, crate trained, spayed, microchipped and up-to-date on her vaccinations. Her current foster family has nothing but good things to say about Gracie. PRIMARIES: Party picks, city Home Rule Charter up for ballot

<<Continued from page 9 In the Patriot-News editorial, the paper said Ellsworth “has the character, temperament and vision to lead Pennsylvania Republicans into what’s widely expected to be a difficult fall campaign against Democratic incumbent Gov. Tom Wolf.” The newspaper decried the continuing attack ads traded by Wagner and Mango, and noted Ellsworth has refrained from negative advertising and praised her recently released TV spot. “The advertisement offered her as a commonsense alternative to Republicans weary of the mud-slinging between the race’s putative front-runners,” the newspaper wrote. The endorsements come as Ellsworth’s campaign spends $500,000 on positive TV ads. Her campaign claims an internal poll shows her rising rapidly, with about 25 percent of voters undecided. Ellsworth, in the midst of a statewide campaign swing, said, “Each day seems to suggest an increasing momentum for my campaign, proving that voters want real policy solutions, not negative rhetoric and empty promises.” The Wagner campaign, with backing from the state party, has knocked on more than 73,500 doors and made some 431,000 phone calls focused on getting out the vote. Pennsylvania Republican Party chairman Val DiGiorgio said, “Leaders from every county and all of our extraordinary volunteers are looking forward to carrying this momentum past May 15, when we will turn our focus to defeating America’s most liberal governor, Tom Wolf.” Wagner was recently endorsed by Making America Great Political Action Committee, a grassroots conservative organization of 4,000 members that is dedicated to electing candidates who champion small government policies. Meanwhile, Wagner has launched a 30-second statewide TV ad highlighting his fiscal conservatism. Wagner, who owns a waste management business and a trucking company, says, “Pennsylvania is a great state filled with good, hardworking people looking to get ahead. But Tom Wolf wants to raise taxes and take more of your paycheck. I’m Scott Wagner. I sign hundreds of paychecks each week. I see first-hand how much state government takes. I’m blunt, outspoken and determined. I’m a garbageman. You

won’t always agree with me, but know this, I’m on a mission to protect your paycheck and cut your taxes, and I will always put you first.” Last Friday, Wagner reported that he raised $912,000 during the second finance filing period of 2018. He has $2.2 million cash on hand. “The support I’m receiving has me energized to close out my quest for the Republican nomination and then continue to draw the contrast between

how I want to protect the paychecks of hardworking Pennsylvanians with Gov. Wolf’s tax-and-spend agenda,” he said. ... Wagner is supporting businessman Jeff Bartos for lieutenant governor. Mango is teaming up with Washington County Commissioner Diana Irey Vaughan. The other Republican candidates for lieutenant governor are longtime conservative activist Peg Luksik and small

business owner Kathy Coder. Ellsworth has not made an endorsement. There are five Democrats running for lieutenant governor. The field consists of Lt. Gov. Mike Stack; Braddock Mayor John Fetterman; Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone; Nina Ahmad, a former Philadelphia deputy mayor; and Raymond Sosa, who has worked in emergency management and response and

human rights advocacy. Wolf has not made an endorsement. U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders was in town last Friday night, rallying outside City Hall for Fetterman, mayor of a tiny borough in Allegheny County. Sanders said, “For more than a decade now, John Fetterman has been an outstanding progressive leader in Pennsylvania. From early in his career, he has stood with the working families of the state as he advocated for a $15 per hour minimum wage, Medicare for all, ending the failed war on drugs and marriage equality. As mayor of Braddock, John has had the courage to address the striking levels of income and wealth inequality in his city, his state and in our country. John has also been an outspoken defender of women’s health, immigrant rights, racial justice and LGBTQ equality. John is part of a new generation of progressive leaders who are not only prepared to stand up to Donald Trump and his Republican allies, but are offering real solutions to the problems facing working people, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor. We need candidates like John Fetterman in every state, at all levels of government.” ... Philadelphia voters will decide on three proposed amendments to the Home Rule Charter. The questions are below: “Shall The Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to require an appropriation in each annual operating budget of $500,000, or such greater amount as Council decides, to the Police Advisory Commission or any successor body or bodies?” “Shall the Educational Supplement to the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to restore local control by confirming the Board of Education’s independent responsibility to administer the School District of Philadelphia, providing for public participation in the Educational Nominating Panel process, revising eligibility requirements, requiring City Council confirmation of School Board appointments, requiring a stated reason for removing a School Board Member and establishing a Parent and Community Advisory Council?” “Shall the Philadelphia Home Rule Charter be amended to provide for mandatory training for all City officers and employees regarding sexual harassment in the workplace?”

Arrie P. Brannan As I relax in my retirement years, I’ve been reecting on my 41 years at Lou & Son Deli at Warnock & Shunk. I started out knowing nothing, and learned as I went along. God blessed me with a good family that helped me when I needed it, and we did well. I have good memories of the many customers and friends I made over the years. My son, Daniel, is in charge now. He has modernized the store to keep up with our fast paced way of life. It does my heart good to see the business thriving.

he Philadelphia Water Department clarified at the Newbold Civic Association meeting last Monday night that it will be adding two underground storage basins on the grounds of Guerin Recreation Center at the corner of 16th and Jackson. The “green stormwater infrastructure being added is a part of the PWD’s Green City, Clean Waters program. The storage basins are designed to hold excess rainwater to prevent it from entering the city’s sewage system. The key reason it’s important for Philadelphia to keep excessive amounts of stormwater from entering its sewage system is because of the city’s combined sewer system. Many more modern cities have a separate sewer system, which means there are two sets of pipes underground: one for stormwater, and another for wastewater. In these cities, the stormwater goes through the appropriate pipes, which leads back to a natural body of water, such as a river or a lake. Wastewater, which is water that comes from resident’s drains, goes

through a separate set of wastewater pipes, that lead to a water treatment plant. In combined sewer systems, like the one Philadelphia has, wastewater and stormwater get mixed together. When storms happen in cities with combined sewer systems, the water level rises underground in the pipes, which have built in dams. If the water level rises over the dams, the stormwater/wastewater mix leaks into rivers, causing water pollution. According to PWD Community Outreach Specialist Becca Fagan, the basins are designed to hold the first inch and a half of rain in the basin. “Basically what we’re doing is we’re just digging deep holes into the ground and filling them with gravel, she said at the meeting. “What they do is they capture the stormwater that’s running off surrounding streets around Guerin as well as the stormwater that’s on the rec center. And it catches that from going into our sewer system. And it basically prevents our sewer system from overflowing in large rainstorms like we’ve seen in the last few weeks. In addition, Fagan said PWD was depaving part of the concrete grounds of Guerin, which lies along 16th Street. The area will become a grassed over play area.

Huppman said that’s the biggest factor in why so many adults still enjoy collecting trains. “In a lot of cases it’s what we remember as children, he said. “Trains were widely advertised and were a big thing at Christmas time. Everybody had a train under the tree. Huppman said all of the major brands will be on display at the event, including Lionel, Dorfan and American Flyer. In addition to the display of trains, there will also be a designated area for kids where they can race trains and play with them. Vendors will also be selling replacement parts for toy trains at the event. Free parking will be available. The Train Collectors Association has about 30,000 members. Its headquarters is in Strasburg, Pa., a town known for its many train attractions. For more information ,visit adtca.com.

CARPENTER GREEN: Effort to build natural space gains traction

<<Continued from page 1 sparked among SOSNA members about revamping the neglected parcel of land, which, at the time, was blighted with two abandoned homes. For SOSNA, the premise of Carpenter Green, which is designed by Maser Consulting, was to not solely satisfy sustainable and economic objectives, but for the project to serve as a family park. “Re-activating public space – giving it back to the neighborhood – that was really the key,” said Christopher Stromberg, a board director and architectural designer of SOSNA. The region, which is home to about 15,000 people, has experienced various fiscal, socioeconomic and demographic changes over the last two decades. “There’s been a tremendous amount of resurgence and development in this neighborhood,” Stromberg said. Since 2000, the 19146 Zip Code, which includes Southwest Center City, Pointe Breeze and Grays Ferry, saw a 51 percent increase in household income, a 106 percent increase in higher education and a 404 percent increase in median home value, according to a recent study by RENTCafé. After a few years of advocating, the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority, which owns the land, approved the project, commencing phase 1 of the plan, which entailed infrastructure improvements, including demolishing the buildings, clearing the sight and working with the Philadelphia Water Department to install rain gardens. SOSNA also worked with the city in changing the land from multi-family residential to park zoning. “One of the things we’re trying to promote is having projects that are responsible development and then also provides some sort of amenities,” Stromberg said. “We really push commercial, mix-use projects.” Stromberg says Carpenter Green is SOSNA’s largest project to date as far as budget and size. The first phase, completed three years, ago was funded through a $100,000 government grant. The second phase, which is set to break ground within the next month, recently totaled nearly $225,000 worth of funds from various organization, developers, companies, government agencies and residents through more than two years of fundraising. Contributors included $50,000 from the state’s Department of Community

and Economic Development and $25,000 from Councilman Kenyatta Johnson’s office through the PRA. Another $50,000 was donated by the Goldenberg Group – developers behind the Carpenter Square complex, which is also located at 17th and Carpenter. SOSNA, which receives funding from the Community Development Corporation Tax Credit Program, provided $10,000. After recently reaching the goal, SOSNA went out to bid, hiring Reed Street Buildings as the contractors. Phase two includes all of the hardscape, like leveling the site, pouring concrete paths, installing benches and building the central plaza with adjoining sprayground – the epicenter of the park. Stromberg says the surge of families in the last five years especially inspired this hydro playground aspect. “Because our demographic has changed dramatically, we wanted to have safe, clean places for families and kids to go play,” Stromberg said. The third and final phase, which kick offs in the early fall, involves the mass planting of all greenery, comprising of lawns, woodland gardens and various street trees native to the Philadelphia region. From Blackeyed Susans to Blue Wood Asters, the native woodland and rain gardens will be abundant with an assortment of flora. A shed will also be built to house electrical equipment, including potential PA systems for summer cookouts and other events. Peppering the landscape with color, Lyft, which gifted $25,000 to the project, is investing an additional $25,000 for an art installation with design firm Groundswell – the creative force behind the illumination at Spruce Street Harbor Park. Currently, the two entities are proposing a circle of interactive lights around the sprayground that glow when touched. The pair is pitching other forms of public art, like murals, as well. Bridging blocks along 17th Street, Carpenter Green will be the hub of an

already booming intersection, as the recently built Carpenter Square complex, which was also supported by SOSNA, is diagonally southeast of the park. The street-length urban plaza features townhomes, condos and, soon, a Melograno restaurant scheduled to open this summer. In February, Edwin M. Stanton School built a vibrant playground – located across from the northeast corner of the park. “It’s all hinged in the ‘trifecta’ – we call it,” Stromberg said. The grand opening of Carpenter Green is scheduled for October with expected attendance from officials such as Johnson and Mayor Jim Kenney. While construction budgets have been reached, fundraising is ongoing, as additional funds will help cover past expenses, ensure unexpected construction costs are covered and provide support maintenance, planting and programming. Stromberg says SOSNA is grateful not only for the city’s support but for the nearly 30 to 40 residents who used connections and contributed ideas for Carpenter Green during monthly meetings over the past few years. “It’s been a community effort,” he said. “An army of people to make this happen, so everybody is super excited about it.”

ADS: Report causes stir

<<Continued from page 7 quirer] admit to what they did was privileged bias reporting to benefit themselves at our expense,” Segal wrote via email. He also vowed to make a request to the Board to have its staffers undergo “bias sensitivity training.” A response from the Inquirer’s Editorial Board was not returned at the time of this report. However, in addition to ruffling the feathers of many community publications, some which the Inquirer report prove greatly benefit from the ad revenue, Williams emphasized his own scorn from the report. At the meeting with regional news leaders, Williams said that reports about him and his office rarely show “the good his office does for the city,” and that he’s “getting sick and tired of having his name dragged through the mud” – a common refrain from elected officials who receive unflattering press. Looking at recent numbers provided by the Office of the Sheriff, it’s apparent why he was none to pleased at the recent report. According to

that April 30 insert provided by the Sheriff’s Office and distributed by the Philadelphia Daily News, sheriff sales have directly provided a total of $28.5 million for both the city ($15 million) and $13.5 million back to more than 100 individuals in excess funding. And with the Office not hosting the listing of these sales online, Williams noted the benefit for people of all types, specifically ones that “don’t read the Inquirer,” from the hosting of these ads in free newspapers. On May 2, Grant-Cardenas Communications, the public and media relations arm of the Sheriff’s Office largely responsible with the placement of sheriff sale ads in various publications, sent out a release on the heels of recent city budget hearings in which Williams testified that since taking office, his team – which includes 408 employees, including 314 uniform personnel with a proposed annual budget of $24.5 million – has amassed $250 million in revenue for the city across a variety of facets – primarily sheriff sales.

T.J. McConnell leads Sixers to Game 4 win over Celtics By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he 76ers motto, Trust the Process, was put to its biggest challenge this week, and so far, so good. Sixers head coach Brett Brown used a strategy Monday night that you might see only in movie about a high school basketball team. The 76ers were down 0-3 in their Eastern Conference semifinals against the Boston Celtics and facing elimination. Like in the movies, the coach turned to the little guy at the end of the bench to save the day. And that’s exactly what happened when Brown called on third-year guard T.J. McConnell to start in place of struggling starter Robert Covington. The Sixers defeated the Celtics, 10392 extending the series to Wednesday night in Boston (8 p.m., TNT). Boston leads the series, 3-1. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound McConnell was outstanding, scoring a career-high 19 points on 9-of-12 shooting in 39 minutes. He added seven rebounds, including two off the offensive glass, and five assists. The former University of Arizona standout said he learned he was starting when he arrived at the arena midafternoon. “We were going into walkthrough at the arena, it was around 2 o’clock, and I walk out onto the floor and our assistant coach, Lloyd Pierce, actually notified me first,” McConnell said. “I just switched my mindset around to knowing I’ll probably be playing a little bit more minutes and just have to be ready.” McConnell used his speed and defensive instincts to pester Boston’s ball handlers all night, often with a fullcourt press. His coach said it was the right move to make, especially with their collective backs against the wall. “The obvious is the obvious,” Brown said. “It’s the way he plays, it’s an injection of energy that you immediately know you’re going to get with him.” His teammates and opponents offered their thoughts on McConnell’s play.

AL THOMPSON/South Philly Review

Sixers third-year point guard T.J. McConnell started his first playoff game as a Sixer, playing 39 minutes and scoring a career high 19 points. McConnell also pulled down seven rebounds (two offensive) and dished out five assists with no turnovers. “He had a great effort offensively and defensively,” said forward/center Ersan Ilyasova, who scored six points in 17 minutes. “He brings a lot. He comes from the bench and scores 19 (points). It was huge for us, especially with him, especially on the defensive end. Nobody can get an easy score on him, he is full of energy.” Boston head coach Brad Stevens said he was impressed with the backupturned-starter. “He was great,” Stevens said. “He was a tough guy. He’s a heck of a basketball player, and obviously, we didn’t do a great job of defending him, and his impact was tremendous.”

Ben Simmons, who scored 19 points, pulled down 13 rebounds and had five assists, was asked how McConnell is able to pick up everyone on the team and play with so much energy. “It is just something not everybody has,” Simmons said. “That fire within. He’s not the biggest or most athletic

guy, but he has an energy that he brings every night and is a huge part of this team. Tonight was a night where he really stepped up. He gave us the energy that everyone else was able to feed off of.” Joel Embiid, who scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, probably paid McConnell his highest compliment, simply saying he’s a pro, and that’s what he is supposed to do. “He just did his job,” Embiid said. “Like Ben said, not everybody has it. He played what, 39 minutes tonight? He didn’t take any plays off, he was pressing full-court the whole time, doing his job, running the offense, getting guys involved, making shots, layups and just doing his job.” Rookie Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists. Al Horford played nearly 35 minutes but took just six shots, making four for 10 points. He pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked three shots. He said the Celtics never recovered from the Sixers’ 10-0 run in the third quarter. “I just felt like they were really fighting, they were very resilient,” Horford said. “Teams are going to make runs they made, we just didn’t match it. We couldn’t match it, and they created that separation, and it was tough after that.” The Sixers did a lot of things well during their first three games against Boston, but they had not been able to transfer those positives into victories until Monday night. There is a big difference between believing you can accomplish something and knowing you can do it. Will that help the 76ers Wednesday night knowing they can beat Boston in a playoff game? “It does help a lot,” Ilyasova said. “Obviously, in order to beat those guys, we don’t know, we have to play smart, offensively and defensively. I think we did a good job to not let them make three-point shots, and we closed out the game the proper way. Whatever it takes, whatever it takes to win Game 5,

we need to do. It’s going to be tough.” It’s probably good the key players on the Sixers roster are so young. They don’t know what they are up against trying to be the first NBA team to rally from an 0-3 deficit to win a series. The Celtics did their homework on how to defend the Sixers’ three-point offense, and so far it’s been effective. Boston’s perimeter defenders have been able to jam shooters Marco Belinelli, J.J. Reddick, Dario Saric, Covington and Ilyasova, cutting off their screens and forcing bad shots. In game three, the 76ers were 9-of30 from beyond the arc. Covington missed all five of his three-point attempts. The Sixers didn’t shoot well in Game 4, either, hitting just 7-of-26 from beyond the three-point line. But Saric was able to muscle his way for a game-high 25 points, and the 76ers hit the boards well again, pulling down 53 rebounds as a team compared to 43 by the Celtics. Their 16 offensive rebounds created extra shots that the home team took advantage of. McConnell’s aggressiveness helped the Sixers come up with six steals. “We ended up with 15 turnovers, the offensive rebounds were enormous for them,” Stevens said. “The extra possessions, neither team shot it great, but they were really good tonight and hats off to their team, hats off to Brett (Brown) and his staff, they were terrific.” Game 5? Game 6? Game 7? Simmons said his team is hungry to make history. “I’m not ready to go home and start my vacation, definitely not,” Simmons said. “I texted Jo before the game and we spoke about it. We want to be here. The time is now. It’s going to take a lot. But that’s just the way our mindset is. We know we’re the leaders of this team.”

As Patents on Sex Drugs Expire, a New $1 Pill Takes the Spotlight A patented pill costing less than $1 a dose stands to help millions of men with failing sex lives; no prescription will be required By Ray Wilson Associated Health Press AHP− A new sex pill is set to take the spotlight with the Cialis patent expiring next month. But unlike the former, it won’t require a prescription and is priced just under a $1 a dose. The new pill called Vesele is part of a new class of performance enhancers for men, which work instantaneously on the body and mind triggering arousal and firmer, harder erections.

all men need to get going. And when taken regularly, many men say they are energized and aroused all day.”

Great Sex At Any Age With the conclusion of their latest human clinical use survey trial, Dr. Esber and his team are now offering Vesele in the US. And regardless of the market, its sales are exploding. Men across the country are eager to get their hands on the new pill and according to the research, they should be.

Formulated with a special compound known as an “accelerator”, Vesele can transport its active ingredients faster and more efficiently into the blood stream, where it begins to work its magic.

In the trial above, as compared to baseline, men taking Vesele saw a staggering 85% improvement in erection hardness over a four-month period. Their erections also lasted twice as long.

The patented ingredient blend initiates a process known as vasodilation, which causes arteries and vessels throughout the body to expand. This allows blood to flow directly to penis and genitals, resulting in harder erections which last longer. Cialis and Viagra are based around a simlilar concept.

These same men also experienced an astounding 82% increase in the desire for sex (libido/sex drive) and an even greater improvement in overall satisfaction and ability to satisfy their partners.

But what makes Vesele so remarkable, and what these other sex pills can’t do, is that also directs a small portion of this blood flow to the brain, which creates feelings of intense arousal. In laymen’s terms, users become incredibly excited and turned on. This is why the makers of Vesele say their pill has worked so effectively in clinical trials. It stimulates the two most important organs for great sex, the penis and the brain.

The Brain Erection Connection Until now, medical researchers did not fully understand the brain-erection connection. It has now been made clear with Vesele. When both are supplied with a constant blood flow, men are harder and firmer for longer...and have unbelievable sex drives. “Most of the research and treatment methods for men’s sexual failures have focused on physiological factors and have neglected the emotional ones. For the leading sex drugs to work, like Cialis and Viagra, you need visual stimulation” explains Dr. Henry Esber, the creator of Vesele. “And although they work for some men, the majority experience absolutely no fulfillment during sex. According to research published by the National Institute of Health, 50% of men taking these drugs stop responding or can’t tolerate their side effects...and on top of that they spend $50 per pill and it doesn’t even work half the time. This is what makes Vesele so different and effective. It floods the blood stream with key ingredients which cause arteries all over the body to expand. The patented accelerator speeds up this process even more. The result is a rush of blood flow to the penis and brain, helping to create an impressive erection and a surging desire for sex. Often, this is

Many men taking Vesele described feeling horny and aroused through the day. The anticipation before sex was amazing. They were also easily turned on. Their moods were more upbeat and positive, too.

Faster Absorption into the Blood Stream Vesele is made up of three specialized ingredients: two clinical strength vasodilators and a patented absorption enhancer often called an accelerator. According to an enormous amount of clinical data, each is very safe. Research shows that with age, many men lose their desire and interest in sex. They also struggle to produce an erection firm enough for penetration. And although there are many theories as to why this happens (including a loss in testosterone) one thing is certain, inadequate blood flow is virtually always to blame. That’s why sex drug manufacturers focus on blood flow, it makes your erection hard. But what’s more surprising, and what these manufacturers have failed to consider, is that lack of blood flow can also kill your sex drive. That’s because blood supplies energy for the brain. This energy is required for creating brainwaves that cause excitability and arousal. Studies show the Vesele stimulates the entire cardiovascular system, including the arteries that lead to both the brain and penis. The extreme concentration of the ingredients combined with the accelerator ensures that this process starts quickly.

Expiring Patent Opens the Door to a New Sex Pill: Vesele is a new pill that cost just $1 a dose does not require a prescription. It works on both body and mind to increase arousal and erection hardness. ygen to the brain and genitals are the same in men and women. “In our most recent study, women taking Vesele saw a stunning 52% improvement in arousal and sex drive. Perhaps more impressive, they also experienced a 57% improvement in lubrication. You can imagine why some couples are taking Vesele together. Everything feels better. Everything works better. Everyone performs better. It’s truly amazing.”

A New Frontier of Non-Prescription Sex Pills With daily use, Vesele is helping men (and women) restore failing sex lives and overcome sexual lets downs without side effect or expense. Through a patented absorption enhancer, the Vesele formula hits the bloodstream quickly, resulting in phenomenal improvements in erection firmness and hardness. By boosting blood flow to the brain, users also experience sexual urges and arousal they often haven’t felt in years.

Where to Find Vesele This is the official release of Vesele in Pennsylvania. As such, the company is offering a special discounted supply to any memory loss sufferer who calls within the next 48 hours.

Recent Studies Show Positive Effects on Women

A special hotline number and discounted pricing has been created for all Pennsylvania residents. Discounts will be available starting today at 6:00AM and will automatically be applied to all callers.

In the same study referenced throughout, Vesele was also shown to have an amazing (and somewhat surprising) effect on women too. That’s because the same arteries and vessels that carry blood and ox-

Your Toll-Free Hotline number is 1-800-571-9819 and will only be open for the next 48 hours. Only a limited discounted supply of Vesele is currently available in your region.

The sexual benefits of Vesele are also multiplied as its ingredients build up in the system over time. This is why many men take it every single day.

Local wrestling favorite brings new promotion By Joe Mason SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

M

att Tremont has done it all. When he was younger, Tremont was a huge professional wrestling fan. He would watch it whenever it was on TV, and then he started going to the events at the ECW Arena in South Philadelphia. There, he became even more inspired by the sport, so he decided to become a wrestler. The fan favorite dubbed “Bulldozer” went from the bleachers to the ring for Combat Zone Wrestling, a promotion that was based in Philadelphia. He started from the ground floor and eventually became the promotion’s champion. As he grew as a wrestler, he also learned the ins and outs of promoting, and two years ago he started his own promotion, Hardcore Hustle Organization, where he wears every hat from wrestling to booking the shows and setting everything up, including finding the talent, collecting the tickets and booking the arena.

He also opened Bulldozer Collectibles at the Berlin (New Jersey) Farmers Market, where he and his girlfriend sell all kinds of wrestling merchandise and collectibles. “We are there four days a week and we have everything,” Tremont said. “A lot of people come in and they are WWE fans, they don’t know anything about independent wrestling. They’ll come in and I’ll have my matches on TV there, and they’ll put it together. “We sell tickets to our shows there, H2O. Plus, it’s a chance for wrestling fans to come in and look around. If they can learn about what we do, that’s just a plus. The independent wrestling in this area, in the Tri-State area, is the best and it’s very good right now.” On June 2, Tremont will take part in a dream match when WildKat Sports and Entertainment returns to the Philadelphia area for the second year in a row. Tremont will wrestle in a threeway match against Wildkat star Danny Flamingo and former ECW star Sabu. It all takes place at the 2300 Arena, also known as the ECW Arena. Hardcore wrestling fans are excited because it’s a chance to watch Sabu,

who was one of the biggest daredevils during ECW’s days, against Tremont, who is now the king of hardcore wrestling in the Philadelphia area. Throw in the talented Flamingo, and you have a match that could steal the show. Also on the show will be Northeast grad Rory Gulak going up against PJ Hawx, the son of Wildkat promoter Luke Hawx, and an appearance by Lincoln grad Stevie Richards. Hawx has also challenged ECW star Shane Douglas to a grudge match in a feud that has been percolating for many years in the Philadelphia area. “Luke knows what he’s doing, he puts a lot into his brand, so I’m excited to be there,” Tremont said. “I’m really excited because this will be the first time I’ve ever wrestled Sabu, and I’ll be doing it in his building. I don’t know a lot about Danny Flamingo, but if he wasn’t a great wrestler, Luke wouldn’t have him on his show. But if he doesn’t like hardcore wrestling, he could be in trouble. “This is my first time wrestling in Wildkat, but I pay attention to them and it’s good. They have great wrestlers, they draw great crowds and people

love it. When I saw who was going to be on the show, I was hoping I’d get to wrestle Sabu, so I’m happy that’s what I’m doing.” Tremont has a reputation for being very violent. Although he’s a good guy (he tried to be a bad guy, but the fans wouldn’t accept it and still cheered him), he’s been through wild wars while wrestling for CZW and various other promotions across the world. But a special match in October may have been his finest and most violent yet. Tremont went all the way to Japan to take part in an exploding barb wire match against Japanese legend Atsuhi Onita. “I got blown up and wrestled in barb wire, but I felt great after,” Tremont said. “The only Americans who ever did that were me and Terry Funk. That’s incredible company to be with. It was something I really wanted to do. It was definitely a bucket list item.” Since sitting in the ECW Arena as a fan, Tremont has done it all. And he wants to continue wearing as many hats as possible so he can enjoy a long career.

“In the past year, I’ve slowed down my (wrestling schedule) as much as possible so I can stay healthy and focus on the other things,” Tremont said. “I still wrestle every weekend, but I don’t do (two matches) every weekend. I’m trying to stay as healthy as I can while still doing the other type of things I love. We also have DoubleStomp Video, a production company that handles a lot of other wrestling shows, their videos.” And while Tremont is a one-man wrecking crew in and out of the ring, he has help from his girlfriend, Crissy Scafiro. “I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for her, and I mean that,” Tremont said. “Not only is she the nurse who helps take care of the wrestlers, she helps me in everything I do. When I’m on the road, she works the store. She handles everything. I couldn’t do any of this without her.” For tickets to Wildkat’s return to Philadelphia, visit www.wildkatwrestling.com/ For more on Tremont’s store, visit facebook.com/BulldozersCollectibles.

Can the Birds repeat? Key role players will have to soar

S

ome of the storylines for the Philadelphia Eagles season ahead are already established: Can quarterback Carson Wentz recover in a timely fashion to again be a superstar at the position? Does Jason Peters have enough gas in his tank to be great at left tackle? And so on. The biggest one: What do the Eagles need to do to become the ninth team in NFL history to win back-to-back Super Bowls? We’re a long way from the start of the regular season, but the Eagles are going to need wall-to-wall contributions from the roster to repeat. And while Wentz and the stars of the team will largely dictate the success, there are some under-the-radar players who bear watching. Here is a list of five to

eye …

CB Sidney Jones A secondround draft pick in 2017 after tearing his Achilles tendon six weeks before the draft, Jones played only in the regularseason finale against Dallas in his rookie year. He’s all the way back physically and he had a chance to get a taste of NFL action in that Dallas game and now Jones is being counted on to take a quantum leap. Like, maybe becoming the best cornerback on the team already. The

Dave

Spadaro

Eagles love everything about Jones, who has size and speed and toughness in his game. Had he not been injured, Jones would have been a top 10-to-15 draft pick in 2017. Instead, the Eagles gambled on him and then nursed him back to the field very slowly. This season, the Eagles get back the payment on the gamble. Jones has a chance to be outstanding.

OG Stefen Wisniewski Truth is, Wisniewski was signed by the Eagles prior to the 2016 season to provide depth at both guard positions and the center spot. Well, it hasn’t exactly gone as planned. Wisniewski started six games in ’16, 11 in the regular season of 2017 and all three playoff games. He’s the odds-on favorite to start at left guard in 2018. And with

a schedule that includes a bunch of games against bigger, stronger defensive tackles, Wisniewski is a key figure lining up next to Peters.

RB Corey Clement Clement accepted more and more responsibility as an undrafted rookie and, lo and behold, there he was in the Super Bowl catching four passes for 100 yards, including a sensational touchdown. The next step for Clement is to become more involved in the running offense, which should be a natural transition. Clement and Jay Ajayi form the 1-2 punch in the backfield for the Eagles. They’ll each get plenty of touches.

DT Haloti Ngata Plans, plans, plans. The idea when the Eagles signed grizzled veteran Haloti Ngata in March was to have him

play 20 or so snaps each game and eat up space and running backs. But when news broke last week that starter Tim Jernigan had back surgery to repair a herniated disc, Ngata’s role changed. He’s going to play. He’s going to have to dust off the magic that made him a five-time Pro Bowl player. Does he have that in him?

WR Nelson Agholor

Agholor had his breakout season in 2017 and then shredded defenses in the playoffs with 15 catches, including nine in the win over New England in Super Bowl LII. Just how good can Agholor be? Can he be that game-changing slot receiver to connect with Wentz? It’s something to watch as Agholor reverses the disappointment of his first two NFL seasons.
