hen Emily Goodman was in high school, she remembers the hands-off approach and lack of academic and emotional support from her counselors. Hoping to change that mold, and since becoming South Philadelphia High School’s counselor, she has dedicated her work to becoming a stand-out mentor, ultimately earning her a “Teacher as a Hero award this spring. One of just 10 local teachers to have received the award that

honors outstanding educators in the Delaware Valley, and which is sponsored by the National Liberty Museum in Philadelphia and State Farm Insurance, Goodman always knew she wanted to become involved in a career that allowed her to work with kids. Upon graduating Harriton High School, she took her first steps to fulfilling her goals by obtaining an undergraduate degree in human resources education and public policy from the University of Delaware, and later received her master’s degree in secondary school counseling from Villanova University.

“Initially I got a job where I was working in the mental health field and where I shadowed kids with special needs, Goodman said. “Being put in a classroom really led me to wanting to be in a school setting. That’s why I chose to go to grad school for my master’s. After securing the necessary educational requirements, Goodman went on to intern at Germantown High School in 2008. There, she met Linda Singleton, then a counselor at the school, who immediately became her mentor. “[Singleton] helped me figure

out my own way and from my experience [at Germantown High School] I knew I wanted to be in an urban school setting where I could help underprivileged kids who didn’t have an opportunity unless someone brought it to them, Goodman said. “Not long after my internship, a friend told me about an opening at a South Philadelphia middle school and I was immediately interested. After connecting with the thenprincipal, Otis Hackney, who now serves as the chief education officer for the Mayor’s Office, she was offered a ASS 5==2;/< ^OUS &,,

The store she is talking about is Edie’s Children’s Corner, 200 McKean St. Mom opened it in March 1953. Outfitting infants and toddlers along with students (school uniforms) became a way of life for Weinstein. The children and their parents were

more than just another customer — they were considered family and friends. Ava still cherishes these stories, which provide great memories of the amazing woman she called “Mom. Sunday will be the first Mother’s Day in which Mom is not around, having passed away in November after living a long and prosperous life. “This Mother’s Day is going to be very difficult for me, she said. In terms of age, that information remains part of the off-the-record conversation. Edie worked well past retirement age, and was still doing the bookkeeping in her final days. “The girls who worked in the store were like her family, and they felt the same way, Ava said. Some of them had been with her for 20 to

30 years, including Pat who retired a few years ago. Terry, meanwhile, continues to uphold the Edie’s traditions including personally fitting the clothing for the children. There were times when customers came in to purchase clothes, but didn’t have the money to pay for them. Instead of telling them to go away, Edie was one of those store owners who would say, “Don’t worry about it, you will pay for it later. Some of those families are still coming in today. One lady recently came in and said “I remember coming in with my grandmother. Now I come in with my niece. While Edie may be gone, Ava, who is a social worker, is the owner of Edie’s. We are talking about a corner business that has been in the family for more than 80 years. Prior to it being a clothing boutique, it was

Mollie’s Hair Salon, which was owned and operated by Ava’s grandmother, Mollie Gorewitz. “We feel very emotional about the location, she said. “It’s very important to keep it going. My mother put her heart and soul into it. I grew up in the business. The plans are to keep it going as long as possible, with the store open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Through it all, as a daughter, employee and now owner, Ava picked up valuable life lessons, with her mom providing guidance and advice. Valuing family and friendships was a big part of it. “One thing I would like to share about my mom’s legacy is that she would tell everyone to be kind to each other and spend time with your loved ones, Ava said. olice Officer Antonio Mayhew, a 30-year-old, 10-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department’s 1st District, was arrested Wednesday, May 3 by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit as a result of an investigation conducted by the department for a domestic-related incident. According to the police department, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross has since suspended Mayhew for 30 days with the intent to dismiss at the end of the 30 days. According to police, on Tuesday, May 2 at approximately 1:45 a.m., while on-duty and operating a marked police vehicle, Mayhew left his area of assignment and was involved in a domestic incident on the 5200 block of Market Street. During the altercation with his wife, Mayhew struck her in the head with his fist as she sat in the driver’s seat of her vehicle. The female complainant left the location in her vehicle and Mayhew pursued her in his police vehicle with his lights and sirens activated. The female complainant was involved in an accident with an uninvolved civilian vehicle at 61st and Walnut streets. The operator of that vehicle sustained critical injuries as a result of the accident and was admitted to an area hospital. As a result of the investigation by Internal Affairs, Mayhew is facing one count each of aggravated, terroristic threats and misapplication of entrusted property, as well as two counts each of simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and official oppression, police added.

*22'0$1 FRQWLQXHG IURP SDJH counseling position in 2009. However, it was always her goal to return to counseling at the high school level, and in 2014, South Philadelphia High School principal Kimlime Chek-Taylor gave her that opportunity. “High school always felt like home to me, Goodman said. “It’s a job from the heart and I love it. YET, RIGHT AROUND the time Goodman made her transition to counseling high school students, South Philadelphia High School and the Edward W. Bok Technical High School merged, with all programs taught at South Philadelphia. Due to this transitional time in the two schools’ history, Goodman recalls there being a mix of students with issues ranging from graduation rate and secondary education goals to behavior and attendance. “The student population wasn’t up and flourishing, so changing that became my No. 1 focus, Goodman said. “I made my first priority to get the graduation rate up,

since it was at less than 50 percent when I started. Goodman organized daily and weekly meetings with students, put together group activities such as trips and college and career readiness programs, as well as partnered with the competitive grant program of the U.S. Department of Education, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. In working with the GEAR UP program’s site coordinator, Tamika Jones, the two established parent meetings, guest speakers, enrichment programs at the Community College of Philadelphia and Temple University and offered credit profiling assistance. “We aimed at taking the students through the whole high school to college readiness process, including SAT/ACT prep, because they had not had much continuum of that through their four years prior, Goodman said. “I also thought to myself ‘What do these kids want that they cannot do because their circumstances won’t let them?’ Goodman came to organize a series of new, high schooler-approved events. For example, she set out to throw a Prom Drive Tea Party, where more than 500 new and gently used prom dresses were donated,

along with jewelry and accessories. The event also served as a lesson on manners, confidence and self-esteem to female students. A countering event for the male student population, “Scholastic Swag, featured a workshop on resume writing, professional attire and communication skills. Additionally, she has hosted a Dream Bar, where students set short- and long-term goals; a Male Symposium with guests from different careers and experiences; and a Commitment Ceremony where all incoming ninth graders signed a commitment pledge to graduate in four years. “Before students would voice that they were overwhelmed with career or college options and that they were lacking the support they needed. They would even call or email the school after graduation asking for help, Goodman, a Center City resident, said. “Now, they know they’re able to depend on me to help take care of them academically. Goodman, 35, has additionally built “incredible relationships with them, and has ultimately helped the graduation rate rise to 70 percent her first year counseling at South Philadelphia High School, and now to roughly 88 percent.

“I always have their backs and do my absolute best to support them and find them opportunities, Goodman said. “I’ve established myself in a way that there’s nothing these kids are afraid of to come talk to me about, and in addition to the students, I stress good relationships amongst families and the community. Moving forward, although Goodman has typically counseled two grades at a time, working with them from freshman year as they progress through senior year, beginning in this fall she will be the primary counselor for all grades. Despite an increased caseload due to budgetary constraints, she plans to continue doing her best to meet the needs of all South Philadelphia High School students. “These kids are a part of the future of society, and we need to help make sure they will go on to do positive things in their lives, Goodman said. “Normally my ‘thank you’ comes from seeing my students excel in their lives, but having received the ‘Teacher as a Hero’ award has been very surreal. In my occupation, public recognition is often uncharted territory, but it’s beautiful to be recognized. SPR

BOYW\U ab`WRSa OUOW\ab QO\QS` A local resident participated in the Broad Street Run as a tribute to her mother

hen South Philly resident Meredith Rebar was just 12 years old, she lost her mother to a year-long battle with lung cancer. In remembering her mother’s fight and the impact the disease had on her own adolescence, Rebar has dedicated her life to spreading cancer awareness and, in doing so, ran the Blue Cross Broad Street Run on Sunday, May 7. “Losing my mother at such a young age was so traumatic, and being a kid I didn’t fully understand the impact, Rebar said. “It’s all still clear in my mind, and I remember how hard it was watching someone you love lose their battle after fighting so hard. Rebar, who was then raised by her father, John, went on to graduate high school and attend Penn State University. In 2007, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in marketing with a minor in film/cinema/ video studies. “After a career fair at Penn State, I met a couple of representatives from the American Cancer Society and they said they were recruiting people to fundraise and event plan, Rebar said. “I never knew you could work for the organization before, but I really enjoyed fundraising and event planning and it was a cause close to my

heart. Rebar’s first job out of college was with the American Cancer Society. For three years, she helped host relay for life events and felt as though she was doing her part in giving back to something so near and dear to her heart. “It was such a great experience. I met people I’m still friends with who I consider some of my closest friends, Rebar said. “It’s such a great community, and I still keep in touch with a lot of the volunteers and staff members today that I used to work with as well. From there, she found employment with the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization. With the goal of working every day to make cancer issues a national priority, for two years she proceeded to work with ACS CAN to “fight back at the legislative level. “I worked with the federal and statelevel legislators and I focused on southeast Pennsylvania. I set up meetings with them in hopes to get them to support different cancer issues, Rebar said. “There were some legislators that had lost someone to cancer themselves and thus were great cheerleaders and really understood it, while in a power position and able to make a difference. While working with ASC CAN, another meaningful impact that was left on Rebar involved the DetermiNation program, the American Cancer Society’s “nation of athletes determined to end cancer. Although she didn’t consider herself to be in shape around the time she learned about this program, Rebar decided it was yet another way that she could do her part in fighting the disease.

JOINING THE DETERMINATION team and its inspiring movement, Rebar decided to take part in its effort to combine athleticism and fundraising. She began to training for her first Blue Cross Broad Street Run in 2015. “I hadn’t run more than 3 miles before the race, so it was tough, Rebar, who raised $500 that year for DetermiNation’s cause, said. “I had trained with a fitness group and the DetermiNation team prior, but I wasn’t in shape. Although I was super slow, I felt really accomplished afterward. Wishing to continue participating in the Broad Street Run with DetermiNation for years to come, Rebar continued training. Along with helping her raise cancer awareness, she also kept running and training to improve her health and help prevent herself from someday receiving a cancer diagnosis. “I was athletic through school and college and then got out of school and got away from being active and healthy, Rebar said. “Making the decision to run helped force me to get healthy again. I’m actually healthier now than I was in high school. In her second year participating in the run, she improved her time and was able to increase her fundraising efforts to $1,500. Set on continuing this trend, before this year’s Broad Street Run, Rebar, who lives at 11th and Snyder, woke up early, put on her DetermiNation t-shirt, placed a DetermiNation temporary tattoo on her cheek and took the SEPTA to the DetermiNation tent at the starting line, mentally preparing herself along the way. Crossing the starting line, Rebar, 31, set a personal goal of completing the race in under two hours, which she did finishing in 1:58:00. Additionally, this year, which is also the 20th anniversary of her mother’s death, she raised the most money to date, harnessing $2,500. “The race is one of the coolest ways to

see the different neighborhoods and parts of the city, Rebar said. “It’s also a great way to meet others who have gone through similar experiences. It is truly comprised of such a great community. Helping to commemorate her accomplishment, Rebar’s husband, and 10 to 15 members of her family and friends, came together that morning to make up her cheering section. Also in attendance on the race’s sideline was her father, who donates to DetermiNation and who comes in support from Douglasville each year his daughter has participated in the Broad Street Run. “It means so much that he comes each year and donates, Rebar said. “My dad has always been my cheerleader, and he and I are super close. He went through losing my mom as well, he knows I’m doing it for my mom. This is close to his heart as well. Although in the time since she began running in the race she no longer works for ASC CAN, Rebar plans to continue her participation in the Broad Street Run for as many years as the DetermiNation program hosts a team. In addition to this run, which is the largest 10-mile road race in the U.S., she will also participate in the Philly 10k in August and the Philly Half Marathon in November. “DetermiNation is something I feel very strongly about, and as long as it is involved in these races, I will be too, Rebar said. “There’s such a huge community of racers and people supporting DetermiNation and acknowledging we’re trying to do. She continued that, between the runners who are currently going through treatment, who have overcome cancer or who have lost someone to the disease, this common thread is what holds them all together and motivates them to complete the race. Above all, each runner aims to make a difference and for their own reasons fight to end cancer. SPR

“One thing I would like to share about my mom’s legacy is that she would tell everyone to be kind to each other and spend time with your loved ones, Ava said. he 80-plus-degree days will be back before we know it. When it comes time to cool off, a tall glass of water may not be enough to resolve the thirst-quenching moment. Mildred Lloyd-Henderson prefers to go with something a little more seasonable and fruity — her Citrus Ginger Ale Punch. Some may decide to spike it with a little vodka. With the recipe meant to be shared, consider making it for an upcoming graduation party or gathering. Be sure the bowl is chilled as Mildred said never use a punch bowl at room temperature. SPR

Pizza Palooza — the event formerly known as the Pizza Olympics — returns following a two-year hiatus. The location, Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., remains the same. Pencil in Thursday, June 22 from 6-9 p.m. for this can’t-miss event. Like a pizzaioli coming up with a tastebud-pleasing pie, we are freshening up the concept. The days of voting for best pizza, crust, sauce and topping are over. This summer night out on the town is about two things: enjoying delicious pizza and entertainment. Come enjoy a slice or two from some of the neighborhood favorites. Maybe there will be a new pizza shop you

have been dying to try, but haven’t gotten around to it. This is a golden opportunity to collect pizza menus for the next take-out night. The lineup of participating pizza vendors will be announced over the next several weeks via southphillyreview.com and Facebook. Maybe it will start a pizza debate or two. Ready to join the party? All you need to do is purchase tasting tickets to South Philly’s biggest pizza bash of the year. The $10 ticket includes eight tastes, while the $15 ticket is good for 16 samples. Additional sampling tickets will be available for $1 apiece. This is a standing-room-only event unless you reserve a table for 10 in advance. The cost is $500 and will include 16 tastes per person and 10 drink tickets for the table. Email events@newspapermediagroup. com. Guests must be 21 or over to attend. Pizza Palooza is being presented by Liscio’s Bakery, and sponsored by Methodist Hospital and Metro PCS. Visit nmg.ticketleap.com/pizza to purchase tickets in advance. A>@

Blueprint to victory: Build the lines 2/D3 A>/2/@= There is almost nothing sexy about playing along the line of scrimmage in the game of football. It is a man’s area, and the men in there live a violent, nasty and punishing profession. Linemen are the “big uglies, as some have said, and they are also the key to success in the NFL Drafting defensive end Derek Barnett in the first round of the NFL Draft two weeks ago was an example of the Eagles’ commitment to the line of scrimmage. Barnett joins Brandon Graham, a first-round pick in 2010, and Fletcher Cox, a No. 1 pick in ’12, as projected

starters up front. On the other side of the ball, tackles Jason Peters and Lane Johnson are among the highest-paid players at their positions in the league, center Jason Kelce has a long-term contract and guard Brandon Brooks was a high-paid free-agent signee last year. Build the lines. Build a winner. “You have to win up front to win in the National Football League, Eagles head coach Doug Pederson says. “We feel like the offensive and defensive lines are two of our stronger areas. We feel like we’re in good shape up front. And when you have those pieces in place, everybody around the lines improves. With that said, just how good are the Eagles

at the line of scrimmage? On offense, they should be among the league’s best, but so much depends upon the play of 35-year-old left tackle Jason Peters, a seven-time Pro Bowl player as an Eagle. Does he have another season of high-level play in his body? If Peters goes down, can Johnson slide from right tackle to left tackle and can secondyear man Halapoulivaati Vaitai step in and play at a high level at right tackle? If the answers are “yes, then the Eagles will fly on offense. They’ve upgraded their wide receivers in free agency (Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith) and in the draft (Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson), and while there are ques-

tions about the running game, a strong offensive line usually means the running game will be OK. On defense, the Eagles need an immediate contribution from Barnett and they think he’s up to the challenge. “He is a dynamic player who is a natural pass rusher, vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas said. “I can’t wait to get him in here and see how he develops. Are there holes this year? For sure, there are questions. Cornerback is still a position to keep an eye on. Depth at linebacker needs to materialize. The running back position lacks a clear-cut, go-to player. But the Eagles think they are ready to improve upon last season’s 7-9 record because, among other things (and Carson Wentz’s development is at the top of the list), they think they’re going to win at the line of scrimmage. Win there, the Eagles say, and they will win on the scoreboard, too. A>@
