Will Rudy Giuliani be still be Trump’s lead attorney? Who knows? That’s why it’s a lot more comforting to look back instead of predicting the future. Here, then, are things that happened on this date in history – May 16: The historical events are real. The additional comments are my own. 1527 – Florence becomes a Republic. And is called “Flo” for the first time in South Philly. 1606 – 2,000 foreigners murdered in Russia. Just for practice. 1792 – Denmark abolishes slave trade – without a civil war. 1817 – Mississippi steam boat service begins. Drink packages start as low as $15 for a four-day trip. 1861 – Confederate government offers war volunteers a $10 premium. FURNESS: Multicultural Fair marks high school’s diverse makeup

She also says nearly 17 languages are spoken by students in the school, and more than 50 percent of students are enrolled in the ESOL program. According to the Public School Review, minority enrollment at Furness is 89 percent of the student body. First- and second-generation children from everywhere from Nepal to the Republic of Congo walk Furness’ halls every day. “This school is a real international school,” said sophomore Kevin Marara, who is originally from Uganda. “We’ve got people from all around different parts of the world, like Africa, Asia, Europe, so that’s why we are here. We’re like one people.” “(Students) try our foods today, and they like it,” added senior Sofia Sultana, who is Bangladeshi. “They ask ‘what is the food about?’ ‘What is it made with?’ They’re interested to taste it and they support us too.” Partnered with the ESOL program, the school has seven bilingual counseling assistants appointed by the school district who serve in Furness a few times a week. A

s a college student, Lauren Buckley embarked on spiritual Native American journeys throughout the mammoth red mountains of Arizona des-

erts. Although she was studying allopathic medicine, the Media native found herself marveled by majestic and mystical wonders like the Sedona and Grand Canyon, gradually unearthing her aptitude for alternative medicine. “Arizona is such a spiritual place. There’s no way to deny it. You just feel so moved by the energy,” she said. “It draws a real traditional healership – spiritual realm – more than other places. And, so, it felt like that was really a big part of where I got my interest in acupuncture.” Surroundings would come to be a recurring stimulus for Buckley. Over the next several years, the now-Newbold resident collected more than 20 years of traditional Chinese medical training across the world. From skills acquired in San Diego to Sichuan province, Buckley has brought her scope of healing practices

to South Philly. Although Buckley continues to run the main South Philly Community Acupuncture on East Passyunk Avenue, which opened in 2010, the business expanded to Media this year, as well as recently joined the breadth of therapeutic modalities at Healing Arts Collective, located at 9th and South streets. “(Healing Arts Collective) is great, because I can really complement healership with all the other therapists, because there’s such a wide collective of therapists here,” she said. eer Meadows Retirement Community last Friday hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the grand opening of the Bernard Stepanski Veteran’s Li-

brary. A reception followed, with Stepanski’s Veterans History Project video shown. The library is on the fifth floor at Deer Meadows, 8301 Roosevelt Blvd. Stepanski grew up in South Philadelphia and graduated from South Philadelphia High School. He was a World War II Army veteran who fought in the Battle of Manila in the Philippines. He was

a resident of Deer Meadows when he died last October at age 92 Stepanski and his family donated numerous books on history and war that are displayed in the library. The library also features pictures of Stepanski, a table, seating, American flags and flags for the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and POW-MIA. State Sen. Although patients retain their privacy, as the room is divided with full-length curtains, Buckley says this idea of shared spaces induces positive effects on the body. “It’s a more profound feeling of realization and healing. … Feeling the peace of others might even bring you peace. We learn so much from just being around each other,” Buckley said. “It’s holistic, and it’s not compartmentalized – and that’s not how medicine and healing should be, because we don’t heal in parts. We heal in whole.” Seeing more patients at once allows lower prices, as she explains that, to gain the benefits entirely, acupuncture needs to be performed more often when beginning treatment. Buckley, who graduated from the University of Arizona in 1997 with a

bachelor’s of science degree in community health education, gradually gravitated from Western to Eastern medicine even prior to earning a master’s of science degree in oriental medicine from the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine, where she also became licensed in acupuncture. Along with being introduced to holistic medicine by her uncle in the medical field, while studying in the Copper State, she took on many mindfulnessbased classes where she was exposed to healing techniques like massage and meditation. Dr. Andrew Weil, a prolific doctor in alternative medicine, was also teaching at the school during that time, as in 1994, he founded University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. Continuingly moved by the desert terrain, Buckley recalls even feeling inspired by the urban regions of Arizona. “Tusan is a really healing-oriented city,” Buckley said. Following graduation, she made her way back to the East Coast, working at a coat check job in Manhattan while saving up money toward her master’s.

Living in Brooklyn for a year, she was ready to seek new adventure, deciding to earn a degree in the field she felt most passionate toward. Constantly craving a change of atmosphere, Buckley bounced back toward the Pacific for graduate school. “(The school) was right by the ocean – another really powerfully energetic, healthy place,” she said. Once graduating with a MSOM degree in 2002, she, once again, ventured cross-country to the Philadelphia area, reconnecting and eventually falling in love with a friend from high school - her now-husband. The following year, when the couple journeyed to Asia, Buckley was not solely exposed to community acupuncture, but she also dabbled in an assortment of blended allopathic and alternative medicine in fields, including special in pediatrics, gynecology, cardiology, interology and pain management, furthering her study of healing through a mindful lens. “The spiritual part really comes from connecting with other people and just

realizing how important it is to know oneself in order to help treat others,” she said. Honing in on skills in various departments, Buckley says she felt validation in that lessons she learned in the U.S. aligned with the practices taught in China. When the couple moved back to the United States, they lived in Florida where Buckley opened a private practice for two years. After becoming pregnant with her first son, they settled in the Philly area where Buckley revisited her acupuncture business. Seeing a majority of higher socioeconomic classes in private practices, this time, she then wanted to approach the treatment from a community perspective. “Since I’ve lived here since 2007, the way our communities have grown and integrated and come together … it’s really bringing more neighborhoods together and I like to be a part of that,” she said. “....(South Philly is) really becoming such a melting pot, and there’s a big push for building the community,

making it better, connecting with each other, and I feel like this business model allows me to do that.” Even though she has five sons now, Buckley has not lost her zeal for the practice or her patients, sometimes seeing nearly 200 people a week with a growing staff. South Philly Community Acupuncture’s ability to mend is not confined to needles, as the group conducts silent auction donations to schools, animal welfare societies, civil servant organizations, like the police and fire departments libraries, community centers, LGTBQ associations and charities that benefit underserved population. “There’s a real spirituality for me in people telling me their life story and holding that sacred space for them and being a trusted individual for someone coming for help and then I can help them,” she said. “It’s a beautiful thing being in the moment – in people’s joy and sadness. I think that’s been the most spiritual part of the medicine for me.”

esidents of the South Street area recently were treated to a walking tour of four of the street’s legacy businesses. The legacy businesses featured on the tour, sponsored by the Young Friends of the Preservation Alliance and the South Street Headhouse District, included Rocker Head Salon, Eyes Gallery, Cohen and Co. Hardware and South Street Souvlaki. The National Trust for Historic Preservation defines legacy businesses as “small businesses that have existed for more than 30 years and have made a significant contribution to the city’s identity,” according to the organization’s website. “There’s a reason people come here and continue to set up businesses here

and continue to visit,” said Bill Arrowood, the tour guide and assistant director of the South Street Headhouse District. “Almost every Philadelphian... has something they’ve experienced on our street. You cannot say the same for other parts of the city. Not everyone in Philadelphia has a Manayunk story. Not everyone has a Rittenhouse story. But everyone has a South Street story.” After the introduction, walkers were led to the first stop on the tour, Rocker Head Salon, which is located at 608 S. 3rd St., right off South Street. The salon has been in the South Street District for 30 years, and its current location for 25. “I opened here because I wanted to be a part of the neighborhood,” said Rocker Head’s owner Kathy Blair. “I didn’t want to be an uptown salon. I wanted to get to know the people. So I’ve had people come in here since they were 2 years old and now they’re mar-

ried with children. I wanted to be part of the community and I keep my prices low. And a good haircut never goes out of style so I just march right along.” Blair said she named the salon after a doodle she drew once, which looked like a “rocker head.” “I said ‘oh my god, that looks like a rocker head,’” she said. “There ya go! I’ll open Rocker Head.” After Rocker Head, Arrowood led the group to Eyes Gallery, which is a gallery featuring Latin American crafts and specialty clothing. The shop is owned by Julia Zagar and her husband, Isaiah Zagar, who is a famous Philadelphiabased mosaic artist widely known for being the owner and creator of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens, also located on South Street. Eyes Gallery has been located at 402 South St. since 1968. The Zagars came back from volunteering in the Peace Corps in their youth,

and weren’t sure where they wanted to live. Even though they were both from New York City, Julia Zagar said, they opted to come down to Philadelphia to start their own business. “We liked the idea of making something out of nothing – building something that is your own,” Zagar said of her business, which is housed in a building she and her husband used to also live in. “So we bought this building for $10,000 and it had been a rooming house. It was really disheveled. My husband got to work on banging it apart and we spent a year or two making it livable.” After Eyes Gallery, the group was led to Cohen and Co. Hardware, a business that has been in the neighborhood for an incredible 104 years selling hardware. “When somebody comes in and says ‘my father sent me from South Philly. He remembers your grandfather.’ Stuff like that – you can’t put a price on it,”

said the store’s owner Mitchell Cohen. “That’s what keeps us going. With all these big box things and online [shopping], that’s what keeps us going, so that’s what’s really important.” The last stop on the tour was South Street Souvlaki, a Greek restaurant located at 509 South St. Owner Tom Vasiliades opened the restaurant in 1977. “This is the place to be I think,” Vasiliades said through a thick Greek accent. “There’s nothing else like it anywhere in the world.” Vasiliades also spoke to the diversity of his restaurant’s menu as well. “We have a combination of everything,” he said. “We have lamb, we have chicken, we have vegetarian, we have vegan, seafood. Whatever you people want, we have it. And the good thing about the menu is that it’s not that expensive. Anybody can afford it.”

Looking to organize a block cleanup? Here’re some tips By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

E

xecutive Director of Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Michelle Feldman took to the South of South Neighborhood Association meeting Wednesday night to provide helpful tips for organizing block cleanups around your neighborhood. Keep Philadelphia Beautiful is a chapter of Keep America Beautiful, a nonprofit that “inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment.� Among Feldman’s tips were to plan a cleanup around an already ongoing event like Philadelphia’s annual Spring Cleanup every April or on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which is a day many seek to perform a “day of service� to make a positive impact on their local community. Feldman said “thousands and thousands of people throughout the city volunteer� at the Philly Spring Cleanup every year. Feldman said any “date that’s coming up that people know about that has them energized that you can plan around� could work. Another good example, she said, might be the city’s Love Your Park event, which happens every May and every November. This year’s Love Your Park Week is currently happening, from May 12 to the 20. The event’s fall service day will be Nov. 10. Feldman also suggested using various media to reach out to find members. She said social media, making fliers and reaching out to local media outlets, such as hyperlocal papers such as South Philly Review, all work very well. (If you have a cleanup you’re looking

Feldman suggested making sure you have enough brooms, brushes and bags to do the job. Often, there are ways to get these supplies through the city. If you’re a registered block captain, you can get these supplies through the Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (you can get more information at philadelphiastreets.com/pmbc). If you’re not a registered block captain, you can still get supplies through the city’s Community Life Improvement Program. For more information about gettings supplies through CLIP, visit phila. gov/CLIP. “I’ve always been surprised at how easy they are to work with – also the amount of bags that they’ll give you,� Feldman said of CLIP. “At one point, I requested 200 bags or something and I thought my computer screen was going to laugh at me, and it was like ‘yep, here’s 200 bags for you.’� Another suggestion Feldman had was to try to make the cleanup fun with music and games. She said other cleanups have held competitions to see who can find the “weirdest� or “oldest� piece of trash, if it has a date on it. Answer will have to wait on season’s biggest question

T

here really is no answer at this point in time, but the question continues: When is quarterback Carson Wentz going to be ready to play in 2018 for the Philadelphia Eagles? If you ask Wentz, he will say his “goal is to play Week 1. I’m confident I’ll be back and ready to play Week 1 against Atlanta.” If you ask head coach Doug Pederson, you hear a different version. “I’m not going to rush him out there. I’m not going to expose him,” Pederson said. “He’ll be ready when he’s ready, and when we feel he’s ready. Right now, we’re encouraged with the progress he’s making.” Which means what, exactly?

It means we’re not going to have an answer until, probably, early in August, if then. Wentz suffered a torn ACL in his left knee in the Eagles’ Dec. 10 game at the Los Angeles Rams and almost immediately went into surgery. In the old days, a torn ACL would mean a recovery period of at least 9 to 12 months. Players often took longer than a calendar year to recover all the way.

But with today’s modern medicine, the recovery window is much smaller. Wentz, only six months out from surgery, is running. He’s wearing a brace on his knee as he takes part – on a very, very limited basis – in the Eagles’ offseason, on-field program. The progress he’s making on a daily basis is fairly remarkable. Wentz is motivated to get back in the lineup, to run his team once again. Here’s the truth, though, and it’s going to be repeated many times in the months to come: Wentz’s recovery is being measured in dribs and drabs, and added up he’s ahead of the game at this point. Not until August, though, not until he’s about 90 percent recovered, will the Eagles really, and truly

know how close Wentz will be to playing against the visiting Falcons on Sept. 6 at Lincoln Financial Field to kick off the 2018 NFL season. At some point in the next few months, Wentz is going to hit a plateau and his rate of recovery will slow down. Getting from 90 percent to 100 percent is the key point here, and the Eagles aren’t going to send Wentz into game action until he’s 100 percent healthy. Why take any risks? Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Nick Foles is ready to play and we know what he can do in this offense. The Eagles know they can win with Foles, because they’ve won it all with him at the quarterback position. You’re going to read so many stories and hear so much talk in June and July

and even into August about Wentz and his projected return. All of it means a whole lot of nothing. The Eagles must prepare for two scenarios for the start of the regular season. One, they go with Foles after he takes all the first-team reps in the spring Organized Team Activities and through the preseason. Or, they prepare with Foles and then, if Wentz is cleared in the final days/weeks leading up to Sep. 6, work quickly to gain chemistry with The Franchise. Either way, the answer right now to the question of when Wentz will return is that there is no answer. And that’s just the way it is, no matter how many times the question is asked.

The school’s initiative of multiculturalism inclusion spills well past the gamut of cuisine and entertainment featured at the fair, as Furness hosts weekly English classes for parents of students and Saturday enrichment for ESOL students Even beyond the students, the school strives to serve as a community center for international families where they can feel safe. “School typically is one of the places that even people who feel marginalized or threatened by their immigration status – typically, at least feel safe at school,” Lorch said. “So it’s something we really want to reinforce and make sure that they know that, at least in these walls, nothing will ever happen to them and no one will ever come for them or harm them or anything

Several students also worked on a paper mural with the Mural Arts team, which has contributed to Furness for several years. The kaleidoscopic project, entwined with different colors, will soon be on display at the school’s entrance. “It’s symbolic of weaving all the different cultures,” said James Dunn of Mural Arts. “One of the things that Furness has been doing is reaching out with their community partners. The Multicultural Fair is such a big part of the Furness identity, so having other outside partners be a part of it – I think is important.”

<<Continued from page 14 Recently, the cabinet instituted a Building Waste Audit Program, which requires cityowned and operated facilities throughout Philly to submit an annual Waste Audit Reporting Form, focusing on how much waste is produced and where it ultimately goes. After an in-house pilot that focused on 475 municipal buildings, including the East Passyunk Community Center, Esposito says the city found serious omissions in its sustainability system, such as certain departments lacking recycling contracts with the city. “These are things people just hadn’t thought through, because no one asked the right questions,” he said. “Now, we’re asking those questions and we’re realizing ‘what are our gaps?’” Currently, the city has tens of thousands of commercial buildings filling out similar recycling plans forms, which will be converted into the audit plans this fall. Buildings must publicly post their results and install proper recycling signage. A major part of the cabinet’s path to zero waste is engaging the public on waste reduction and diversion, as several EPX residents brought up concerns about litter in their immediate area, particularly from public schools. “There must be some way to reuse or at least more sensibly and sustainably dispose of the food,” said Beth Dougherty, corresponding secretary for the association and the community schools coordinator at Southwark, located at 9th and Mifflin. Along with witnessing poor composite procedures at the school, she notices a lack of recycling in several public schools.

Esposito explained that while every Philadelphia public school has recycling capacity, the official procedures ultimately fall upon individual school administration. He also said the city maintains a food recovery program in all of its rec centers in which food cupboards can obtain leftover items – a system the city hopes to implement in schools. Joseph F. Marino, an at-large committee member for the association, said the East Passyunk Community Center has its own inhouse recycling system, as the center’s leftover food for kids is given to local seniors on fixed incomes. Residents also voiced concerns about trash buildup on storefronts with prepared and packaged food. Leon Malloy, president of the association, said during its zoning meetings, the group stresses the lawful and environmental need for trash cans installed at such businesses. A city law requires cans must be placed within 10 feet of the entrance to the business during the business’ normal hours of operations, according to the city’s Business Services. He also noted the EPX Civic Association gives free recycling bins to residents, which they can access at www.epcrossing.org. “What really makes Philadelphia stand out is – community engagement is not something that was thought of afterwards … we built community engagement into the plan,” Esposito said. The next general meeting for EPX Civic Association is is scheduled for Monday, June 4, starting at 7 p.m. at the East Passyunk Community Center.
