The story begins with Ellyn Phillips, the fourth president of the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter. In 1984, Phillips lost her husband, Alan L. Phillips, to the disease. A year before, the couple had come to the Greater Philadelphia Chapter for support and through it met a wonderful group of patients and caregivers. The year of her husband’s death, Phillips

orn into a family of entertainers, Fran Prisco began performing in musical theater at age 10 under the direction of his father, the director of the local community theater. Although he had once dreamt of someday gracing the New York City stage, as his career in the arts progressed, Prisco found no better place to call home than Philly. It’s in the City of Brotherly Love, more specifically the Walnut Street Theatre, where he can be seen in “Saturday Night Fever through Sunday, July 16. Although he now lives at 11th and Ells-

worth streets, Prisco was raised in Ardsley, and during his sophomore year at La Salle High School while participating in the school’s musical theater program, he realized his passion for the performing arts. Upon graduating high school, he attended Allentown College of Saint Francis de Sales (now DeSales University) in 1990. “When I was finishing college, I had a teacher who told me, ‘You don’t have to go to New York right away. You can work to build up your regional resume in a smaller city,’ Prisco, 45, said. “I came home from college and began auditioning around Philly. In realizing the city’s potential for employment in the performing arts, Prisco decided to move to Philly and began living

with his brother at 6th and South streets in 1994. He auditioned day after day until he eventually landed his first theater gig, performing the role of Louis the Baker in the show “Sunday in the Park with George at the Arden Theatre Company. “This show was pretty cool because I was only 22, Prisco said. “For years, I was doing a lot of bartending and waiting tables, while working to build my theater resume. I would go to anywhere from three castings in a day to days with nothing, it just depended on the day. It was not until 2007 that Prisco’s career really picked up when he obtained a role on a national tour of the off-Broadway musical, “Forever Plaid. While on tour, he visited the 48 contiguous U.S. states while

embarking on the most challenging experience in his performance career yet. “The national tour taught me to be patient, concentrate more and to become a better listener because I had to work to bear down on the intricate and difficult harmonies within the musical, Prisco said. “After I got back from the tour, I started playing more character-type roles, so not the handsome man who sings the love song, but instead the secondary man who sings the funny song. HE EXPLAINED THAT, just as Igor was to Dr. Frankenstein, because he had always been on the shorter side, he found he was better suited for these roles. After gaining popularity as he once again took on the Philly

To the Editor: Thanks to Review staff writer Lindsey Nolan for her comprehensive report on why the Teacher as a Hero award was bestowed recently on South Philadelphia High School counselor Emily Goodman (“Good work by Goodman, May 11). Let me join my voice in praise and congratulations to this wonderful educator for her heroic efforts to guide students through the rigorous steps necessary to succeed in high school and beyond. The word “heroic especially applies here because of so many hurdles students and staff face in the school district due to relentless budget cuts in recent years. In spite of the many obstacles in her path, Ms. Goodman has dedicated herself to enabling her students to reach their full potential and not only graduate but move on to higher education. It is a stunning achievement that, using a variety of pro-

grams, she has been able to raise the graduation rate at South Philadelphia High School from 50 percent to 88 percent from the time she arrived to the present. Truly amazing! What this article stresses, and what should continually be emphasized, is that students do not reach their goals in a vacuum. Along with supportive families and teachers, they require resources and creative guidance from determined professional counselors like Ms. Goodman. She is an example of what it means to go the extra mile — a priceless inspiration. Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

SEALY continued from page 1 as well as drink specials and the chance to win a door prize, 95 percent of front door proceeds, 100 percent of auction items, 50/50’s, shirt and wristband sales will go directly to Sealy, who resides in Pennsport, to contribute to her medical bills and living expenses while out of work. “Andy has been an employee and a ‘McFamily’ member for years, so it wasn’t even a second thought. As soon as we heard of her situation, we all came together and thought of what we could do, Dale Condi, director of special events and private parties at McFadden’s at Citizens Bank Park, said. “I had to put quotations around ‘Banger’ because that’s one of Andy’s favorite words to use for a big and fun event which her parties always are. This personal battle began in January when she was diagnosed with breast cancer after finding lumps during a routine selfexamination. But following a mastectomy, Sealy learned that because the cancer is metastatic — meaning it can spread from the original site to one or more sites elsewhere — it has spread to a part of her spine and right hip. As a result, Sealy’s oncologist has advised her that there is no need for chemotherapy. Rather, she has been put on a slow, progressive treatment that involves getting a Lupron injection to stop her body from producing estrogen, the hormone that feeds metastatic breast cancer, as well as a Zometa drip to strengthen her bones once every three months. She is also taking Tamoxifen daily, an anti-hormonal pill used to block the female hormone estrogen in the body. “I know it’s going to get harder at some point, and that the median lifespan for someone with Stage IV metastatic breast cancer is three years, Sealy said. “I just try to put a positive spin on everything. All I can control now is my brain and how I handle this. IN CONTINUING TO face her diagnosis with extreme positivity, there was no better way to raise funds and awareness than by throwing another party, this time at the bar she’s worked at for almost a decade. In getting her start at McFadden’s in ’09, Sealy was first hired at the Northern Liberties location after meeting general manager John Bernardo through a friend. Soon after, she switched to working at the ballpark and instantly fell in love with its sporty vibe and its group of employees.

Despite the tough road ahead, Andy Sealy refuses to let her cancer diagnosis keep her down. PHOTO

“To me, McFadden’s is like a big comfy sweater that I love crawling back into, Sealy said. “Since I started, I always come back year after year to work there, even if it’s just for a few Phillies games or events. I never thought I would love it there as much as I do, and to get another family out of it. Yet, that’s exactly what happened. Since her mastectomy, she said she had to borrow fold-up chairs from a neighbor to keep up with the number of McFadden’s friends coming to visit her. One Sunday, during what had becoming an every-otherweek brunch among her friends, Bernardo stopped by just as a friend was mentioning throwing Sealy another party. The idea stuck, and the McFadden’s planning committee began organizing the event. “[Sealy] has been in the industry so long

that she has so many people who love and want to support her in any way possible, Condi said. “She would do the same for any of us with no questions asked. Sealy explained that to her, this love and friendship stemming from McFadden’s had not only brought employees together, but friends of employees as well. She describes it as the link that gave her the big group of friends she has today, and thus the many people who are committed to helping her fight breast cancer. As many of them say, “Cancer picked the wrong girl. After her “Banger, Sealy will undergo her next bone scan next month, and plans to meet with her oncologist a few days later. Although there is no cure for metastatic breast cancer, Sealy plans to continue with her treatment and positive mindset, appreciative as ever for the support her “McFam-

I find it hysterical that people are even interested in my story because I’m just doing what I have to do, Sealy said. “All I want is for the ‘Banger’ to be a great time, and to stress to everyone to feel their boobs regularly, and not to feel crazy if they think they feel something. Instead, go get it checked out because this could happen to anyone. A>@ To purchase tickets to Andy’s “Banger, visit eventbrite.com/e/andys-banger-tickets-33445899586. PHESTIVAL continued from page 1 a pet dog who would run into her cousin’s yard quite often, and that’s how the neighbors were introduced. “My cousins knew that my mom was trying to find someone who knew the Giles, because my mom thought, and rightly so, ‘that ALS belongs in baseball,’ Phillips said. “My cousin gave my mother Nancy’s name and phone number. At the same time, an article appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer in July 1983 that featured a story about my husband’s battle with ALS. From there, a meeting was set up with Phillips, her mother, Rochelle Moss — the president of the National ALS Foundation who subsequently succumbed to ALS as did her father and sister — and members of the Phillies organization. Also present was now-chairman of the Phillies, David Montgomery, and members of the Phillies Community Services team, including Chris Wheeler, Regina Castellani, Vince Nauss and Vicky Dernier, a player’s wife. Although ALS was a relatively unknown and unproven charity at the time, through

dedication, hard work and love, she and her team proved themselves and became the principal charity of the Phillies. Through her work, in 1984 the Phillies hosted their first event in support of ALS — a fashion show that raised $28,000. Four years later, after a few members of the group went to observe a Flyers’ wives carnival, they realized they could fundraise on a much larger scale, and thus introduced the Phillies Phestival in 1989. LOOKING BACK AT how far the Phestival has come, Phillips knows her late husband would be proud. Way before their journey with ALS began, she remembers sitting with her husband in the 700 level of Veterans Stadium during the sixth game of the 1980 World Series when Tug McGraw struck out Willie Wilson to clinch the Phillies’ first World Series victory. “I’ll also never forget when we were on our first date he found out I had Phillies season tickets and he spit out his soup in shock, Phillips said. “It turned out we had both been fans since we were 6 years old. He would be proud of how far we’ve come joining the Phillies and the ALS charity together.

Phillips said her goal is simple: to raise enough money to help provide excellent patient care and help researchers discover more effective treatments and a cure. At this year’s Phestival, which raised $656,500, fans came from all over the state to support the Phillies and the fight against ALS. Stephanie Derr drove to the stadium the morning of the event from Reading to take part in the day’s “phestivities, which included player autographs and pictures, auctions and raffles, games and the chance to throw in the bullpen. “ALS is a terrible, debilitating disease, Derr, who lost a friend to the disease five years ago, said. “Any work toward finding a cure is the best thing ever in my opinion. In addition to supportive fans, many Phillies employees volunteered their time to help ensure the event’s success. Many of these employees, such as Ray Duffy, a Phillies host since 2010, even had a personal stake in the Phestival’s purpose. “My dad and my best friend both passed away from ALS, and I’ve seen the damage [the disease] can do in its later stages, Duffy said. “My dad became like a baby and couldn’t really do anything for himself near the end. It was painful to see him that

way after knowing him as such a strong role model. Duffy, who has volunteered at this event each year since joining the Phillies organization, continued by saying that, aside from supporting a great cause, he enjoys volunteering his time at the event because it’s yet another way he gets to meet and converse with fans. To him, seeing the community come together for a day of fun and for a cause so close to his heart is more than worthy of him time. SPR

Feeling Saturday Night Fever-ish A Bella Vista resident is performing in his 29th show at the Walnut Street Theatre N 0g :W\RaSg <]ZS\ R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

orn into a family of entertainers, Fran Prisco began performing in musical theater at age 10 under the direction of his father, the director of the local community theater.

B?<;IJOB;I performing arts scene, Prisco has been working steadily at the Walnut Street Theatre for the past decade. “I have been very fortunate, and the Walnut Street Theatre has been very good to me, Prisco said. “My first show there, after auditioning for six years, was ‘Singing in the Rain’ back in 2000, and this year ‘Saturday Night Fever’ will be my 29th show here. While for many shows, Prisco had to audition for each role, after he told the theater he wished to play the role of Frank Manero in the musical, they called him to extend him the offer. Having already worked with the theater for so many years, as he has performed in shows such as “My Way, “The Wizard of Oz, “South Pacific, “Last of the Red Hot Lovers, “Sister Act, “The Music Man and “Memphis with the company, he believes they felt confident in his ability to assume the role and portray the lead character’s father, Frank Manero. “I wanted to play Frank Manero because, the honest answer is because he gets to

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

slap his son upside the head at the dinner table. I first saw that scene, and it really stuck with me because John Travolta has his hair messed up and it cracks me up, Prisco said. “There’s so much energy coming off the stage during this show that there’s no doubt everyone’s going to love it. Knowing how far his work within the performing arts industry in Philly has progressed over the years, Prisco is proud of his work and content with his state of employment. In the years to come, he hopes to continue acting, singing and directing while inspiring others through his work. To other aspiring Philly-area performers, Prisco advises that if the passion for the art is there, they remain active and consistent in seeking to find work and opportunities. As in the case of his own life, he believes if the love of the work is there, performers should refuse to give up on their dreams. “You’re going to hear ‘no’ a lot more than ‘yes,’ Prisco said. “Despite a lot of rejection, you just need to stick to it. SPR

Rosina’s Chicken Opera, anyone?

C

hicken can be prepared so many different ways that one could spend hours contemplating what to make for dinner. Will you toss it on the grill, top it with Sunday gravy and mozzarella or fry it? We’re just getting started. When Theresa Strati is in the mood for some poultry, she makes her Rosina’s Chicken. How do baked drum sticks, thighs and wings with homemade potatoes sound? Strati, of the 2500 block of South Juniper Street, has one word: “delicious.

Fry the chicken until its a light golden brown, and remove from the pan. Set aside on a plate for cooling. Add more oil, if needed, and lightly fry (save oil to fry the potatoes). Season the potatoes until they start to lightly brown. Remove the potatoes. and shut off heat Gather chicken and potatoes in roasting pan, and add water to bottom. Foodies get ready for a Brawl

E

KR PDNHV WKH EHVW EXUJHU LQ WKH &LW\ RI %URWKHUO\ /RYH" The question will likely trigger a several-hour debate, and there is a strong chance everyone will have a different answer. How about making a list of every wellknown burger joint around and scheduling a month-long tour to settle it? There is a much easier way to resolve this: Get all the contenders in one place. Welcome to Burger Brawl 2017 — the annual burger-eating bash featuring 60-plus contenders from around the city, including several South Philly spots. The event takes place Sunday, May 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. at Xfinity Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave. (rain or shine). While food, and there will be plenty of it, is the focal point, the concept began as a neighborhood fundraiser for the William H. Meredith School, 725 S. Fifth St. Founders Rob and Maggie Wasserman, who had a son, Jonah, in kindergarten at the time, created it five years ago after the school principal asked parents to get involved. Maggie said to her husband “we need to do some type of event, with the goal of funding a new computer lab at the school. Being in the restaurant business as the owners of Rouge on Rittenhouse Square, the couple reached out to their friends in the restaurant industry, and put together the inaugural Burger Brawl on the school grounds — the first sponsored event ever held on the school grounds. Some 15 restaurants and more than 300 people attended. The burger concept came about after the restaurant was included in a 2006 GQ article “20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die. The event was such a huge success it got moved to the Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., the second year. Like their

family, which now includes four children, Burger Brawl outgrew the site, with Xfinity Live! becoming its new home three years ago. Call the more than 3,000 people and 60plus restaurants the mustard and ketchup of this success story. Burger Brawl still serves as a fundraiser for Philly schools, funding technology packages. It also includes a partnership with The Fund for the School District of Philadelphia to support Superintendent Dr. William R. Hite Jr.’s initiative, The Right Books campaign — making sure students have the right reading resources. Come Sunday, it will be all about the food and cocktails. Besides a bare-knuckleburger showdown, attendees and judges will pass judgment on cocktails, tacos and wings. The field will include a strong South Philly representation from the likes of Good King Tavern, 614 S. Seventh St., Percy Street BBQ, 900 South St., Lo Spiedo, 4503 S. Broad St., The Twisted Tail, 509 S. Second St., Taproom on 19th, 2400 S. 19th St., Sabrina’s Cafe, 910 Christian St., New Wave Cafe, 784 S. Third St., 1100 Social, 1100 Pattison Ave., and Moonshine Philly, 1825 E. Moyamensing Ave. The winners will be determined by a panel of judges led by WIP’s resident foodie and Burger Brawl ambassador Glen Macnow. Prizes will be awarded for the People’s Choice winner in each category — every attendee’s vote counts. Lucky’s Last Chance, 848 S. Second St. and Manayunk, returns as the defending People’s champ for their peanut butter and bacon burger offering. Matt Cord, Marilyn Russell, Steve Morrison, Rahel Solomon and Mike Jerrick will be among the judges. General admission tickets are $45 and include one vote for best burger and a complimentary beverage. The VIP passes are $100 and come with early entry (2 p.m.), access to the VIP lounge, opportunities to meet the celebrity judges and one vote. General admission tickets are $55 at the door. Children 10 and under are free. Parking is free, too. No matter who wins this weekend, Rob and Maggie continue to be amazed by the growth of their schoolyard event. “It has just been a wonderful event for the community, especially for such a good cause, Rob said. RPHWLPHV D JUHDW WHDFKHU FDQ SXW \RX GRZQ WKH SHUIHFW SDWK In Sean Brady’s case, it was the exact opposite. Brady was working on becoming an auto mechanic during his days at Swenson Arts and Technology High School, and after taking some classes, he realized working on cars wasn’t his passion. That’s when he found out exactly what he wanted to do. “I was training just because I loved it, Brady said. “I was doing Muay Thai and then I started taking Jujitsu. I really didn’t think about doing it for a job, I was just doing it, and then someone told me I could do this. Brady is doing it. And on Saturday, the Philly-based fighter will main event his first card when he takes on Tanner Saraceno. The fight is part of a Cage Fury Fighting Championships 65 at the 2300 Arena, 2300 S. Swanson St., and Brady is going for the vacant welterweight championship. There are three title fights on the card, including Anton Berzin, who fights out of Fishtown, taking on Jamelle Jones for the inaugural CFFC light-heavyweight championship, and Joseph Lowry, who spends his days as a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 19, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., squaring off against Mike Pope for the lightweight title. “It’s great because that arena has so much history, Brady, who goes by the nickname “Phighter, said. “It used to have ECW wrestling, but now it has MMA and boxing and it’s a great building to fight out of. Brady has been in his fair share of big fights. Before becoming a professional, he went 5-0 in the amateur ranks, including a victory in December 2011, which was about six months after he graduated from Swenson. Since becoming a professional, he’s a perfect 4-0. But since this one is for the championship, it’s going to be a daunting task. “Tanner is a big guy, he’s a great fighter, Brady said. “I know he’s a wrestler, he was in WWE, but he’s now doing MMA. I’m

training my butt off because I need to be ready to go for 20 minutes. Now that he’s an experienced fighter, Brady is cool and calm when he walks into the cage. But when he first became a fighter, he was anything but poised. “The first time I fought, I almost peed myself, Brady admitted. “I was terrified, the first couple I was super scared. I’m doing a lot better in that, the more you go in, the more comfortable you get, but I was super scared the first time. HE’S MUCH BETTER. His mom, not so much. Brady has an incredible support system, which includes his family, especially his parents and brothers, and his girlfriend. All of them will be at the 2300 Arena on Saturday to watch the fight, but all will have different attitudes while watching. “My girlfriend wants to get in and help me, but my mom gets really nervous, Brady said. “My mom cries. Always. She’s been doing it every fight. I’m a mama’s boy, I love my mom and she loves me. She wants to see me win, but not get hurt. “She goes to support me, I’m really lucky. I asked for 175 tickets for this fight and I sold every one of them. If they gave me more, I would sell more. My friends, family and fans are great. They all come out and really help me. They do more than cheer. Making your way in professional mixed martial arts is tough, and without support, he couldn’t do it. “I have great sponsors, but this is my job, Brady said. “I’m trying to move up. I want to win championships. I’m very fortunate that I can focus on this and make that my career. Winning on Saturday will certainly help him move up in the ranks. Cage Fury Fighting Championships is a reputable league, but every fighter dreams of fighting for the UFC, which is the major league of fighting.

A lot of fighters do everything they can to get to the top of the mountain as fast as they can, but that’s not Brady’s approach. Someday, he wants to get the call, but for now, he’s more than happy fighting in CFFC. The more work he puts in now, the more he’ll be ready when it happens. “Winning a championship is definitely the next step, but right now I’m focused on this fight, Brady said. “The next step would be the UFC, but I want to win the championship and defend it. This is going to be a tough fight. “I want to go to the UFC, everyone does, but I want to take my time, make sure I’m

ready. I want to be more mature and ready when I go. In the future, when his fighting days are over, Brady could see himself coaching, something he already does during his down time. But right now, he’s not worried about the future. He’s just worried about Saturday. “It’s going to be a really tough fight, Tanner is good, Brady said. “I’m working. I want that championship. This is why we do it. Philadelphia is an MMA city with a lot of great fighters. I want to win. A>@ For more information about Saturday’s event at the 2300 Arena, visit cffc.tv/tickets/cffc-65.

Oh, the fame is nice if you make it, and the paycheck certainly makes a difference, and who in the world wouldn’t want to perform in front of 70,000 screaming Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on game days? But to reach that point, many months down

the line, there are dozens of hurdles to first leap. One is this reality: The Eagles have a 90man roster that is winnowed to 53 in September that is, truly, in a constant state of change throughout the season. “You don’t take anything for granted, running back Donnel Pumphrey, a fourthround draft pick, said. “I know that nothing is going to be given to me. I have to earn every bit of it, and that means not making any mistakes. I’m not here to have fun. I’m here to win a job. Defensive end Derek Barnett, a first-round draft pick, is going to win a job. He knows that. But it doesn’t mean his stress level is anything less than his rookie mates. Once you sign up for the duty, the job requirements are demanding.

‘I’m not here to have fun. I’m here to win a job.’ -Donnel Pumphrey

he’s out in the streets looking to pay his rent. Under pressure ‌ “It’s a dream come true to be here, but we also understand the business side,â€? said wide receiver Mack Hollins, a fourth-round draft pick. “This is the profession we’ve chosen. I want to be here for a long, long time.â€? To make it, players have to immerse themselves in long days, along with long nights in the hotel huddled up with the playbook. There is no other way. A slip-up here or there can be costly, because the Eagles, like every team, are constantly trying to upgrade the roster. Players in the NFL get paid real money only when the games begin, and if a rookie doesn’t make the grade,
