Wanna bet?

L

ast week the U. S. Supreme Court struck down the federal anti-gambling law. South Philly sighed a collective yawn. You mean it was illegal to bet on sports? You from another planet or what? Around these parts, a lot of guys have closer relationships with their bookies than their wives. You might forget the wife’s birthday. But you write poems to your bookie when his birthday rolls around. The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act barred gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports. The only state that was exempted was Nevada. Hey, Las Vegas without gambling would be like Trump without hair spray. The major professional sports and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) all had strongly supported the ban. The Commissioners of the major sports all claimed that legalized betting on their sports would hurt the integrity of the game. And they each said so with a straight face. Hypocrisy – thou weareth a dark suit and wingtips. I wish they worried as much about some of their players beating up their wives and girlfriends. It is estimated that $4.5 billion is wagered illegally every year on the Super Bowl alone. Yet, the “integrity” of the National Football League seems to have survived gambling. The Vegas odds have been a staple of the sports page since the Athens Gazette laid 2-1 on whether Socrates would drink a cup of hemlock. See CARDELLA, page 12>>

May showers couldn’t keep this year’s Super Bowl champions and thousands of others from participating in the inaugural Eagles Autism Challenge at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday. Eagles mascot Swoop led the way as hundreds kicked off the Wawa Junior 15-mile ride that was part of the event.

aturday’s scattered showers could not dissuade the Super Bowl champions, alongside thousands of others, from rallying at Lincoln Financial Field.

While the Lombardi Trophy shined splendidly on display, the more than 3,300 attendees did not simply gather on this year’s NFL titleholders’ turf for more celebration but rather in support of a special cause. Kicking off their inaugural event, the Philadelphia Eagles and Lincoln Financial Group hosted

n Friday, May 18, at approximately 3 p.m., a 2012 Black Mazda CX-9 struck an 11-year-old bicyclist in the 3rd Police District at 10th and Shunk streets. This accident resulted in the fatality of the bicyclist. According to the Philadelphia Police Department, the operator of the car was traveling westbound on Shunk Street. The bicyclist was traveling northbound on 10th Street, crossing in the crosswalk at Shunk Street when he was struck by the car. The driver then pulled up the road and pulled off to the side to call 911. After calling 911, the driver drove to the 3rd Police District to report the accident. Medic No. 11 transported the bicyclist to Jefferson Hospital where he was pronounced at 3:35 pm. The investigation is active and ongoing

with A.I.D. Police said further information will be released as it is made available. According to the district attorney’s office, thi incident is the subject of an ongoing investigation by law enforcement. According to DA press secre tary Ben Waxman, it is highly likely this investiga tion will result in criminal charges. “These kinds of investigations are complex and they do require some time for law enforce ment to look at the facts of the case, Waxman said. “We know the community in South Philly and everyone in Philadelphia is horrified by death of an 11-year-old...We’re very sensitive to that and we just ask for some patience from folks while the process continues. Compassionate Philadelphians chipped in to help pay for the funeral costs of Julian Angelucci the 11-year-old boy who was fatally struck. As o early this week, the GoFundMe page set up by the victim’s sister raised nearly $19,000, exceeding it $15,000 goal.

School’s embrace E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N of cultures a path forward, says writer

A

s the granddaughter of Italian immigrants, it was a pleasure to read the report by Grace Maiorano on the annual Multicultural Fair hosted by Horace Howard Furness High School, featuring the languages, arts and cuisine of over 30 different countries. This piece highlights the reality of schools like Furness and classrooms across the city, which are in the process of acculturating students from all over the world to life in America, while respecting their individual identities, languages and customs. For those who are not familiar with the term, ESOL means “English for Speakers of Other Languages. Teachers must earn special certification or TESOL to work with students speaking dozens of different languages. For those Furness students, who are here on student visas, and want to become naturalized citizens, learning English is a necessity. Unless an immigrant is over 55 or has been a legal resident for at least 15 years, he must read, write and speak English to obtain naturalized citizenship. As the article mentions, the School District may drop some of the ESOL assistance that Furness requires to meet the needs of such a diverse student body. That would be very detrimental, not only to the education of willing students, but would slow down the process of acculturation and a path for some of them to citizenship. Proper funding for this and all ESOL classes in the district must be supported. What is really inspiring about the Furness curriculum is that these students are encouraged to retain their own languages and customs while acquiring English and assimilating into American life. We are blessed to live in a country where people can come from diverse tribes and yet learn to appreciate and peacefully enjoy each others’ culture and language. It is more than a melting pot. It is an American tapestry. Gloria C. Endres

Eagles Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Lurie addresses the crowd gathered inside Lincoln Financial Field during the team’s inaugural Eagles Autism Challenge on Saturday.

EAGLES: Event aimed at aiding autism fight pulls in close to $2.4M

<<Continued from page 1 By the time festivities ended, the fundraiser had collected close to $2.4 million – 100 percent of which will go toward the region’s top autism research institutions, including the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health. “We’re starting a legacy here – on the field and off the field,” Howie Roseman, the Eagle’s executive vice president of football operations, told crowds at the starting line. “They said it was too cold! They said it was too rainy!” said Eagles center Jason Kelce, mimicking his iconic parade speech on the Parkway. “Now, let’s go out there and have some fun.” All cycling routes launched in the Linc’s parking lot throughout the morning, as each ride wound along different courses around city and eventually finished back at the field on the 50-yard line. The 50-mile ride reached as far northeast as Blue Bell, while the family friendly 5K circled Citizens Bank Park along Darien, Packer, Broad and Pattison. From parents of children on the spectrum to special education teachers, attendees say they traveled from across the country to support an underresearched and underfunded cause. “I’m seeing every day these kids and how much this could benefit them,” said participant Kelsey Turp, an autism support teacher. “Just a little bit of money would be something, but the amount that we raised – more than $2 million – it could be such a benefit.” The developmental disorder is being diagnosed at a rate of one in 59 children, according to the Eagles Autism Challenge report. It seems to be more prevalent among males, as one in 37 boys and one

Attendees found the Eagles’ fundraiser to be particularly valuable, because the challenge not only aims to draw awareness toward a relatively uncertain condition but strives to improve its scientific studies. “We wanted to support this, because the money’s going to help out early detection and help out where it’s needed – instead of just awareness, like most things,” said participant Joel Lipenta. Participants also say it was especially thrilling to watch their favorite team in the NFL shed light

on a commonly misunderstood disorder that falls near and dear in their lives. “We’re die-hard Eagles fans, so to have our team support a cause that’s so personal to us, it’s amazing,” said attendee Natalie Beckwith. “We’re here to support the Eagles and to raise money and awareness for autism, which is a cause we all deeply care about,” added attendee Kennedy Edmonds. “I think it’s so great to be a part of something that’s bigger than us. It makes you feel like you can do something small but make a big difference. And if everyone felt that way, imagine

what we could all do and how we could change the world.” During closing remarks on the field, Eagles Insider reporter Dave Spadaro recognized the challenge’s major research partners, including Madeline Bell, the CEO of CHOP, John Anderson Fry, the president of Drexel University, Robert T. Schultz, director of the Center for Autism Research at CHOP, Craig Newschaffer director of The A.J. Drexel Autism Institute, and Roseann C. Schaaf, a professor at Thomas Jefferson University. “Your passion and resilience today epitomize everything that made us Super Bowl champions this year,” Jeffrey Lurie, chairman and CEO of the Eagles, told the crowd at the finish line. “This has truly been an incredible year. Today has exceeded my wildest expectations, and this is just year one of the Eagles Autism Challenge.“ The Philadelphia Eagles and Lincoln Financial Group plan to conduct this fundraiser and event on an annual basis. The funding will specifically go toward research related to autism causes, including environmental and genetic evidence, as well as assistance toward individuals affected by the disorder and future generations who fall on the spectrum. This year’s top team funders included Team Eagles – Catch 22, which raised more than $550,000; Eagles Football Operation, which raised more than $69,000; and Team KTMC, which raised close to $68,000. “This is a fantastic start, but today is just the beginning, Philadelphia,” Lurie said. “You never let us down. I know we will look back on 2018 as not just the year we won the Super Bowl but as the year we began to change the world for those living with autism.”

Local students compete in Eagles chess tournament By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

H

undreds of students from chess clubs around the city took to Lincoln Financial Field Wednesday afternoon for the 14th annual ASAP-Eagles Chess Tournament. After School Activities Partnerships coordinates afterschool activities for city children in chess, drama, Scrabble and debate. “We are really trying to foster competition with all of the Philadelphia scholastic chess players in the city,” said Martin Collette, ASAP’s director of chess programs. “The Eagles tournament is one of their end of year events that they get to come back after competing all year long.” At the event, students played five rounds of blitz-style chess. The K-12 winner was Central High School’s chess team. “It feels amazing,” said the team’s captain, 12th-grader Elijah Rowe. Rowe said he and his team would originally practice every Friday, but then started practicing on Tuesdays as well in the weeks leading up to the Eagles tournament. Eagles wide receiver Mack Hollins was on hand to take pictures and play chess with a few students. “Mentally it’s a lot more strenuous,” Hollins told SPR when asked why chess is such a good game to get children involved in. “I guess the saying is ‘I’m playing chess, you’re playing checkers.’ But there’s just so many combinations and there’s just so much composure that has to go into it. And you get frustrated because you’ll play a lot of players that know they’re better than you and they’ll start talking trash and you have to be able to keep your composure.” Hollins said he learned to play chess when he was in grade school, but never played in competitions – only casually. Collette said many of the students who participate in the chess program are absolute beginners or are unrated. However, some of the highest-rated students are rated in the 1800 to 2000 range, which, according to Collette, is “bordering onto expert level, master level players.” To put that in perspective, Magnus Carlsen, who is the world’s best chess player, is rated at

2843. “To get to that level, you can go from 0 to about 1000 fairly quick, 1000 to maybe 1800 a little slower, but it’s reasonable to do it in a few years,” Collette said. “To make that leap from being an expert to a master or a grandmaster is a much slower process.” Collette said that learning chess is

kind of like a “magic trick.” “You’re not even going to believe these are the same kids you might have had when they started learning chess,” he said. “You can walk into a room – especially in some of these tournaments – like this out here is kind of noisy, but if you go in there when they’re playing it’s just silence. You hear the sounds

of pieces moving and blocks being hit because they’re so focused in on the games that they don’t care to really goof around, run around, talk a lot and that kind of stuff. It really helps them work on their focus, their concentration, obviously their critical thinking skills, next steps, looking at patterns, wondering whether this move is the best move

or that move is the best move and trying to think a couple moves ahead.” Also at the tournament was Gil Motley, a chess coach who teaches children how to play chess at the Lenfest Center, a recreation center in North Philly. Motley said chess teaches critical thinking, patience and planning. “You have to have patience,” he said. “All these things you’re going to need in your adult life. Chess and life is just like a mirror. You got to have a plan. Failure to plan means planning to fail. It’s simple.” If you’re interested in getting more details about enrolling your child in one of ASAP’s programs, reach out to Collette at mcollette@phillyasap.org.

The Happy Hour menu, served daily from 3 to 6 p.m., includes $3 wines, $2 draft beers and a $5 food menu. From 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., conquer your midnight cravings with a late night menu featuring flatbread pizzas and more. Additionally, Billy Jack will host Friday night Happy Hours. One band to keep an eye out for is the Soul Cruisers, coming this season to Lighthouse Pointe. Although Lighthouse Pointe boasts an upgraded, fresh look, its décor reflects the originality of the Lighthouse Pointe of the past. Come for the nostalgia and create a new experience!

Reclaim U, Inc., founder Jameela Williams speaks at the group’s recent launch event at the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s Courtyard Apartments at Riverview.

Reclaim U aims to aid at-risk individuals across the city The new mobile organization strives to mentor youth and their families around Philadelphia By Grace Maiorano SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

orking close to a decade at the Riverside Correctional Facility, South Philly native Jameela Williams noticed a recurring theme

among inmates. Assisting victims of violence, drug addiction, prostitution and other adversities, the nurse had a revelation. “There was a gap, and in order to bridge that gap – they didn’t have nobody. Some of them just didn’t have the resources,” she said. “Some just needed an ear to listen to them. Some just needed help. So, I had the passion to just want to help people. And I wanted to start first in my community.” Recognizing that support is key to prevention, Williams recently established Reclaim U, Inc. – a pending nonprofit striving to “empower and inspire individuals in order to strengthen families and communities.” Recently, the group, comprised of seven board members from around Philadelphia, held its official kickoff event at the Philadelphia Housing Au-

thority’s Courtyard Apartments at Riverview on 4th and Washington. From local politicians to former prisoners, a series of guest speakers endorsed Williams and her team’s message on the premise and hopes of Reclaim U. “You – you are our future … who’s going to be making the decisions for us but you,” State Rep. Maria Donatucci told the young crowd. “So, it’s so important that you know who you are – that you have that drive, that you’ve had that mentoring and that you’ve had that education to take us where we need to go. And that’s so important, it really is. We will be relying on you.” Aside from living in the building three decades ago, Williams, the group’s president and founder, says she picked this location in lower Queen Village for the launch because she sees a particular need among South Philly youth, hoping to mend communities affiliated with domestic issues, violence, poverty, drug addiction and health disparities. “I see the difference from when I grew up to now in South Philly,” she said. While the coalition holds some of its work here, See RECLAIM U, page 12>>

RECLAIM U: New group aims to offer lifeline to those in need

<<Continued from page 10 Reclaim U considers itself a “mobile” organization, cultivating confidence in children and their parents throughout the city. While the group is still in its infancy, it plans to kick off a five-week training program soon, which would focus on basic life skills – from tying a shoe to changing a tire, as Williams and other board members say such rudimentary abilities are not always enforced in minitory children’s upbringing. “The concept is to empower and to inspire, but through an individual aspect,” said board member Zakiyyah Berry. “Retraining the mindset of urban people and trying to make them understand they are not victims.” The life skills training session will encompass many concepts, like using proper etiquette, practicing self-love and cooking with affordable, alternative foods. There will also be a course strictly centered upon verbal communication, discouraging children to fidget on their phones and focus on interacting with one another verbally. Another chief component of the organization is to not solely foster support among youth but to embed such visions in their parents and guardians, as families can also participate in lessons on financial literacy, such as filling out FAFSA forms or applying for a credit card. Although the official organization sparked this year, board members are bringing years of experience and expertise, as their backgrounds are in everything from Boy Scouts of America to social work. Having networked in Philly communities for several years, they say it will not be hard recruiting mentees. The very essence of the group lies in its name, as the goal of Reclaim U is to not necessarily create confidence but to unearth an integrity that was present all along. “We’re trying to retrain the mindset of our people,” Berry said. “And we want them to reaffirm and reclaim who they are, who they can be, who they should be, and who they will be once they claim themselves.”

GRACE MAIORANO/South Philly Review

Reclaim U, Inc., a pending nonprofit, hosted its launch event recently at the Philadelphia Housing Authority’s Courtyard Apartments at Riverview. The group aims to empower and inspire individuals to strengthen families and communities across the city. At the event, young people from around the area listened to guest speakers ranging from politicians to former inmates.

CARDELLA: Sports gambling is nothing new to South Philly

<<Continued from page 1 The cash cow of sports betting is pro football. I get the feeling that the big reason the NFL introduced instant replay was to assure the gambling world that it got the calls right. Before instant replay, Johnny Half-point watched wrong calls by the refs and wondered out loud about “integrity.” Mostly described “integrity” using four-letter adjectives. Might have tossed the barbecued wings at the TV screen. These days, the network telecasts obligingly show the replays with numerous angles. Half-point might not be happy with the outcome, but at least he knows the refs are not on the take and tinkering with the game’s integrity. For you youngsters out there, it wasn’t always that way. Back in the

day, we’d hang on the corner at 9th and Wolf after an Eagles game. One of the older guys would insist that the interception in the last minute of play was intentional. He claimed every NFL game was scripted. Each play. He’d look at each of us with a jaundiced eye and tell us how stupid we were being taken in by the elaborate choreography. Claimed he knew who would win and when the fix would be in before the game. Would insist, when his prediction didn’t turn out, that the script had been changed sometime between the National Anthem and the final gun sounding. We called him “Murph.” And Murph had no doubts about the integrity of the game. There wasn’t any. Murph would’ve loved replay. I heard some naïve commentator on NPR claim that with legalized sports

betting, fans will be able to sit in the stands during games and bet on every play. Hey Cecil, or whatever your name is, didn’t anybody ever tell you about the guys with fat cigars in their mouths, sitting in the bleachers at Connie Mack Stadium, betting on balls and strikes? These guys didn’t need the sanction of the state to place their bets. And they still don’t. A recent study estimates that within the next five years, 32 states will line up to take advantage of legalized sports betting on games. And what do you think the remaining 18 states will do once that happens? It’s much easier for politicians to take a pledge of no new taxes when gambling tax revenue is pouring in. You can worry about gambling degenerates betting themselves into oblivion, and rightly so. But what

do you think those guys are doing right now during every football season? They bet the Thursday night game and lose. Then they bet the Sunday games to make up for their Thursday night loss. By the time the Monday night game rolls around, they’re in big time and are taking one last shot at recouping their losses. That’s not going to change much. My source tells me he thinks Vegas will take a small hit, but – as he says – “Vegas is still Vegas.” He thinks on-thestreet betting will survive legalization better than the illegal numbers business did when state lotteries went into effect. The difference between numbers and sports betting being the amount of the bets. Legal establishments require the cash up front. Many of the illegal bookmaking operations already use

off-shore betting websites. Customers like the convenience of their local bookmaker. They can settle up at the end of the week rather than needing the money up front to bet. Bettors also like the convenience of using their computer or picking up the phone to make a bet. Former Sen. Bill Bradley, a professional basketball player himself, has always vehemently opposed legalized sports betting on games. Bradley says that legalized betting on sports turns every player into a roulette chip. I respect Bill (“Dollar Bill” to his friends), but hell, these players have always been roulette chips in America. Like it or not, gambling is as much part of the culture in South Philly on an Autumn Sunday as Mom’s meatballs.

TOM BECK/South Philly Review

Low Cut Connie frontman Adam Weiner plays to the crowd Thursday during the hometown band’s concert at Union Transfer.

Low Cut Connie brings it on home at Union Transfer By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

“W

here do we live, kids?” Low Cut Connie’s flamboyant frontman Adam Weiner shouts at the packed crowd inside of Spring Garden Street’s Union Transfer Thursday, as it responds with a hearty “We live in South Philly!” Weiner, the pianist/singer and main songwriter of the band is onstage for

the band’s album release eve show, where the Philadelphia crowd gets its first shot at purchasing Dirty Pictures (Part 2), the fifth and latest release from South Philly’s sleaziest party band. He and his band are jamming to “Boozophilia,” the band’s biggest hit and third song of the night. They opened the show with “All These Kids Are Way Too High,” the first track off the new album, before leading into Hi Honey’s “Back in School.” The audience fed off Weiner’s energy by dancing and singing along to every note he sang, and Weiner re-

turned the favor at one point by jumping into the crowd to greet fans with hugs. The band played a variety of songs from the new album, including “Every Time You Turn Around,” the single “Beverly” and “Oh Suzanne.” Instead of taking bathroom breaks and grabbing drinks during the new stuff, the crowd overwhelmingly decided to stay put and keep enjoying the show. Some of the highest high points of the night were the band’s rendition of “Shake It Little Tina,” a song about a burly manly man who dresses up and dances like Tina Turner when he’s all

alone. Weiner stood on his piano bench, plucked out some of his chest hairs and blew them into the audience during the opening bass lines, driving home the point that this would not be your typical hop-on-stage-play-the-songs-and-leave concert performance; a Low Cut Connie performance is an experience – a fully choreographed production even. The band also played a variety of music from previous albums, including a track lead guitarist James Everhart sings lead vocals on called “Am I Wrong?” as well as tunes like “Revolution Rock and Roll” and “Scoliosis

in Secaucus.” The band ended its first set with “Rio,” before coming back onstage for a six-song encore that included several covers. Charles Bradley’s “Changes,” Brother Claudy Ely’s “Ain’t no Grave” and Harry Nilsson’s “Jump Into the Fire” were all performed before the band ended the night with Prince’s “Controversy.” At the very end, rhythm guitarist Will Donnelley smashed his guitar into pieces capping off a performance for the ages. The show was opened by local bands Ceramic Animal and TJ Kong and the Atomic Bomb.

Doug Pederson fits Philly and what we’re all about

H

ere is Doug Pederson, on a television set talking about himself and the success he’s suddenly had and what it all means to him after an undistinguished 14-year NFL playing career followed by a coaching career lacking any real pizazz. Until now, of course. “Philadelphia, I get it. I get the fans and I understand that things haven’t been quite where everyone wanted until this past season,” Pederson said. “It’s kind of been that way for me. I’ve always been an underdog. I’ve never had a thing handed to me, and everything has come through hard work. That’s what Philadelphia is all about. Hard work and hoping for the best. We’ve got

the best now. The goal is to stay the best.” Only eight teams in NFL history have repeated as Super Bowl champions, and that story will be told through the course of the next many months of the 2018 Eagles season. This is about Pederson and the rise from unknown assistant coach to very-much-questioned head coach hire to Super Bowl hero. So what does Ped-

Dave

Spadaro

erson do for an encore? “I’ve just got to do what I’ve been doing, continue to be me and make sure we are ready to play our best football each week,” Pederson said. Sounds simple, but it’s clearly not easy to do. The Eagles are the defending Super Bowl champs, and Pederson – mocked when the Eagles hired him shortly after the 2015 season ended in a Chip Kelly flameout – is in demand. He’s the hot ticket and he’s the one other coaches and teams and players talk about modeling their approaches after. If the NFL is a copycat league, we’re about to see a bunch of teams going for it on fourth down, calling trick plays and playing entirely unpredictable football. Could it be that Pederson is perfect

for Philadelphia? “He relates so well to people, and I think the fans identify with who Doug is and what he’s been through,” center Jason Kelce said of Pederson. “Doug came in here and didn’t care what people thought of it. He didn’t listen to what the media wrote and said about him. He just went out and did it his way. That’s just the way he is.” Pederson continues to do things his way, and it’s not all by the NFL playbook. He’s got his players, for instance, involved once again in something he calls “competition games,” a weekslong series of “fun games” the players participate in and compete against each other for prizes such as – and these are hotly contested – parking spots in the

front row at the NovaCare Complex, Tshirts and the most coveted one of all, the chance to DJ the weight room for a week. “Those guys get after it, I’m telling you,” Pederson said. Sometimes, Pederson isn’t pretty. And sometimes he’s got some ‘splainin to do with the moves he makes. He’s a likable everyman who plays well in a city that loves honesty, grit and a story that involves a hard day’s job. Pederson checks all the boxes. “I think I’m one of them in a lot of ways. I get what they’ve gone through,” Pederson said. “To be here and to win the Super Bowl for these fans, that’s what makes it all so special. These fans deserve the best.”
