n his recent novel “A Gentleman In Moscow, Amor Towles theorizes that weather has an enormous influence on history. That may or may not be true, but I can tell you firsthand it certainly affects vacations. We flew from Philadelphia for Montreal in a steady rain. We were to spend the night in Montreal before boarding the Veendam for a seven-day cruise stopping in Quebec City and destinations in Nova Scotia — Prince Edward Island, Halifax, Sydney, Bar Harbor, Maine, and arriving in Boston. The sun did not make an appearance until we docked in Bar Harbor. Under this kind of circumstance, It’s imperative that

War and Remembrance: The Meaning of Sacrifice By Gloria C. Endres

M

y earliest memories of foreign wars was as a small child in the early 40’s during World War II. One of my uncles was serving in Europe as a tank commander under Gen. George Patton. I recall this because he survived and brought my twin brother Danny, his namesake, and me a toy tank and two toy rifles, so we could play our own war games. We did exactly that, turning kitchen chairs into airplanes and “bombing” Tokyo or pretending the round dining room table was a tree where we crouched waiting for the enemy to come along so we could shoot them with our rifles. Memorial Day was not actually a part of our early childhood experience, We know now that it originated after the Civil War to honor those who had sacrificed their lives on the battlefield. Now I am thinking that perhaps some sacrifices take longer than others to manifest, and location should not matter. In 1950 at the age of 10, my brother Danny and I received an unusual Christmas gift — a real manual printing press. This means we had to manually lay little rubber letters and punctuation marks inside a metal strip to make up words and sentences. The strips were attached to a roller which was turned by a hand crank that dragged the rubber pieces across an inkpad and towards a piece of paper to print it. The kit also came with little rubber stamps that we could add to the page as illustrations. One of those stamps, my favorite, was of a little soldier standing at attention. This all gave us the brilliant idea to publish our own newspaper and sell it in school. Thanks to an understanding teacher, we printed out a bunch of single page newspapers each week (until we tired of the adventure), and sold them

to our classmates for a penny apiece. I always included the little rubber soldier. In 1951, the Korean War was raging, and every week the Philadelphia Inquirer published the number of Americans killed in action. I used the little rubber numbers and carefully placed the casualty totals of the week under the little soldier’s picture, to add it to our weekly publication. They were often in the thousands. I never missed an issue. Of course, I had no idea that, during that same time period, my future husband Stanley Endres, only 18, was serving in the army in North Korea. Nor could I have known the trauma he endured, including being captured, and later wounded by “friendly fire.” As a fifth grader, all I knew was that the soldiers who were dying had to be remembered in our weekly paper. Was there a bit of premonition in my concern for our soldiers? Technically speaking, Memorial Day is designated for those service members who were actually killed in battle. Veteran’s Day is meant to honor those who survive war and return home. My question is: What about those veterans who just take longer to die from their wounds? What about those war survivors whose wounds are invisible and slowly take a toll on their lives? Are they not also war casualties? There have been members of my family in every single American war in the 20th century, from WWI to Iraq. My twin brother, like my father before him, served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Other uncles, cousins and in-laws served overseas in various branches. Stanley served honorably in Korea and returned home with a bullet in his left leg along with post traumatic stress. He survived the war, but his painful sacrifice continued until his death in 2010. He rarely mentioned the

war and never told me about his wounded leg until he was dying. I truly believe that we should not differentiate between the living and the dead when it comes to serving our country in war. No combat veteran returns completely unscathed. For so many, the war never ceases and some lose that battle long after the hostilities are over. My dear husband finally found total peace on April 9, 2010, with his wife and daughter Claire holding his hands. I always display the American flag on special national holidays like next week’s, using a Korean War flag holder to honor not only his memory but his very real sacrifice. So, on this Memorial Day, 2017, I hope we can rededicate ourselves to seeking peace in the world and among ourselves. We must always remember those who gave their lives on the field of battle. But we must remember also those who have had delayed deaths connected to their war wounds or carried invisible and painful scars for the rest of their lives. It is only right. SPR

AV]ba ¿ `SR On Friday, May 19 at approximately 3:08 p.m., the Philadelphia Police Department

responded to the 2100 block of Sigel Street for a report of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers discovered ballistics evidence in front of the corner grocery store at 21st and Sigel streets. Recovered surveillance showed a tall, heavy-set black male with a beard and wearing a white T-shirt walk into the store, followed into the store by another black male, with a thin build, shorts, wearing a white Tshirt and with a beard, removed a gun from his pocket. The second male then chased the first around the store and back outside. Once outside, the male with the gun fired numerous shots toward the east side of 21st Street and fled north toward Moore Street. No injuries were reported and area hospitals were checked for shooting victims with negative results. Two parked vehicles were struck by gunfire during the incident. He has returned with three impeccably designed spaces that will transport guests to a Japaneses streetscape (Okatshe), a seafront coastal town (Olon) or a beachside beer bar (Bar Olon). A true farm-to-table experience Regular visitors to the Cape May have heard of Beach Plum Farm — the 62-acre site that provides farm-fresh produce for the Cape Resorts family of restaurants. Those into the farm-to-table dining experience may want to pencil this one in on the summer bucket list. Chef Todd Phillips uses ingredients harvested that day for his menu. The date, location (outside, under a tent, in a greenhouse or in the hand-hewn post and beam Amish barn) and menu are TBD. caperesorts.com. IMAX-imize the movie experience Face it, not every day is going to be a beach day, so you may be seeking familyfriendly entertainment. The IMAX Theatre at The Tropicana has a full slate of the anticipated summer blockbusters lined up for the season. The list includes “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, “Wonder Women, “The Mummy, “Transformers: The Last Knight and “SpiderMan: Homecoming. Hey, why not make it a dinner-at-The Quarter-and-movie night? Visit tropicana.net/entertainment/imax-theatre for the complete movie schedule. A-list entertainment Hey, summer is prime season at the Shore, which means headliners galore are coming to town. It’s a list that is way too long to print, so here are the highlights: Dancing with the Stars Live! (June 16-17); Patti LaBelle (June 24); Mary J. Blige (July 3); Pink (July 12); Brantly Gilbert (July 13); Jill Scott (July 16); Theresa Caputo (July 21); The Who (July 22); Jeff Dunham (July 22-23); Vince Neil (June 23); Jim Norton (Aug. 5); Smokey Robinson (Aug. 25); and Sting (Sept. 3). ticketmaster.com. Fireworks Want to see fireworks, you say? Well there will be plenty of opportunities throughout the summer, not just on the 4th. The Trop in AC, for instance, will be firing them off every Saturday night at 10 p.m. May 26Sept. 9. The Wildwoods will literally be kicking off weekends with a bang starting June 23 at 10 p.m. They will be visible from almost anywhere on the Willdwoods Boardwalk. Celebrating Independence Like the City of Brotherly Love, Congress Hall in Cape May — America’s oldest seaside resort — has a tradition of making the 4th of July an extended celebration. It’s capped off with an all-day picnic and patriotic celebration on Independence Day. Carnival games, barbecue, lobster bake, and of course, fireworks are all part of this family-friendly fun. 3-9:30 p.m. July 4. ca-

peresorts.com. Pure thrills Here is a guarantee: the Atlantic City Air Show will draw a crowd of thousands on Wednesday, Aug. 23. Unlike the spectacle in the sky known as the 4th of July fireworks, this eye-opening experience, now in its 15th year, will soar high above the beach creating a “Wow! factor like no other, including an appearance by the Thunderbirds — the United States Air Force Demonstration Squadron. Free to attend. airshow.acchamber.com. Starr power Yes, there will be plenty of stars at the shore, but in this case we are talking about Stephen Starr who is king of the Philly dining scene. While The Playground — located across the wooden way from Caesars Atlantic City — may be filled with vacancy signs, the third floor continues to draw a crowd, with local favorites The Continental or Buddakan, being a big reason why. Hey, it’s not just about a day at the beach. playgroundpierac.com. Did somebody say seafood? The Atlantic City Seafood Festival returns Sept. 9 and 10 with one big change: It’s relocating to the open space between the Showboat and former Revel, steps away from the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. Now in its sixth year, this massive bash is the largest outdoor event of its kind in the Greater AC area. We’re talking food vendors, beer tastings, live entertainment, cooking demos and more. The familyfriendly fun begins at 11 a.m. both days. acseafoodfest.com. Right on ’que Instead of lighting up the grill on July 7-9, here is a better idea: head on down to Wildwood for the NJ State BBQ Championship and Anglesea Blues Festival. Enjoy delicious offerings from some of the top grillmasters around paired with entertainment from top regional and national blues acts. Visit njbbq.com for all of the tasty details or angleseablues.com for a schedule of events. Marble Madness Who are the king and queen of marbles? Well, we will have to wait until next month to find out when the National Marbles Tournament returns to the Wildwoods. This year marks the 93rd anniversary for this national competition for boys and girls ages 8-14. More than 1,200 games will be played during this four-day event taking place June 19-22. Ringer Stadium, Wildwood Stadium and the beach. Free for spectators. nationalmarblestournament.org.

Summer nights with the Mummers Philly may get the Mummers all to itself on New Year’s Day, but kings of strut can be seen throughout the year, including summers in Wildwood. The string bands will perform on the Wildwoods Boardwalk from 16th Avenue to the Wildwoods Convention Center 7:30-9 p.m. on various nights starting on June 29. Free. wildwoodsnj. com/calendar. More Mummers Ocean City is holding a Mummers Night of its own on Tuesday, July 11 7-9 p.m. The strutting takes place on the boardwalk between Sixth and 14th streets. oceancityvacation.com. Next stop, Exit 0 There may be a point this summer when you suddenly blurt out the words: “I could really use an island retreat. Well a visit to the reimagined Beach Shack — part of the Cape Resorts family — with its laid back surfer vibe and new tiki bar at the pool may be in order. Pups are welcome at this beachfront, pet-friendly property. D;MI CARDELLA continued from page 1 you be with someone you love. Fortune has always smiled on me. Fran makes all of my cloudy days sunny. And anyway, as we found out again, it’s the people you meet, not the wondrous places you visit or the sunny days, that linger in your memory when the trip is over. Fortunately, we were not as unlucky as the Asian doctor who was recently manhandled by United Airlines, but in less dramatic ways, flying has become by far our most uncivilized form of travel. The events of 9/11 remain with us. I had my first experience with the new pat-down procedures recently instituted by TSA. Can anyone explain why there are times when the alarm goes off and other times, under the same circumstances, when it does not? This time I happened to set off the alarm at the Philadelphia airport. The TSA agent seemed almost embarrassed as he described where he would be patting me down. No wonder. I discovered a new erogenous zone during the pat-down. Could be a new chapter in the Kama Sutra. Without a chaperone, I would not go through this pat-down in private. One of the few perks of old age is that I no longer have to remove my shoes. (As far as I can tell, the only other benefit from attaining my age is that I am only required to have a prostate exam every two years). The ship we sailed on, the Veendam, is not one of those new monster ships that populate cruise ship lines these days. Rather it is an older mid-size ship, a sort of throwback to those days when traveling by ship was among the most romantic ways to travel (I would include trains in that category). The Veendam’s age carries with it the inconvenience of fickle cabin temperatures and occasional plumbing problems. But the ship’s age also has a charm that is missing from larger cruise ships. The romantic image of cruising has given way in recent times to the banality of the midnight buffet and amateurish entertainment. Austerity has trimmed the size of the buffet, but it has remained the center of attention for those who glory in multiple desserts and as a refuge for those who cringe in horror at the thought of donning a jacket to eat in the main dining room. Amenities now carry separate charges. And while there are still cartoonish performers on cruises such as Bob from Boston who sang “The Impossible Dream” and “Crocodile Rock” equally off-key, we did find an excellent jazz trio, a classical pianist, and good shows to entertain us. At the outset of this column, we men-

tioned the importance of the people we met. And while the hilly streets of Quebec City are still charming even in the rain, and the mussels are wonderful in a little holein-the wall place on Prince Edward Island, and it was great walking along the streets of Bar Harbor, it is the people that we will remember. I have become one of those people who need people. And I found them. There were two women from Sacramento. Ellie is 85 years old. She looks 15 years younger. Years ago, she hosted a German exchange student for a year, a cousin she had never met. During that year with the free-spirited Ellie, he had the time of his life. After he learned to drive, Ellie agreed that he could drive over the Golden Gate Bridge. The once-shy kid dyed his hair black, donned an earring and camouflage pants. Ellie’s motto—“Not my kid.” That “kid” is now 37 years old. He brags about that most wonderful year of his life with Ellie. Janis, her companion on the trip, was one of the first females to become a high-level executive with IBM. Beth from Houston is a sensitive woman who was celebrating her successful battle with cancer. A couple from Santa Fe who mutually had great difficulty walking, clung to each other for support in defiance of their infirmities. There were folks we met who left their safe lives in the East in mid-life for new lives in Tampa and Santa Fe. And there was that rainy day on Prince Edward Island when we met a young Japanese girl from a small town near Tokyo. She traveled alone. We wound up sharing a table with her in a crowded cafe and treated her to lunch. She seemed so vulnerable and we felt protective of her. We left the café and said our goodbyes. It began to rain heavily again. The girl huddled under umbrella as she waited on the corner for a bus. And when the wind kicked up, it looked as if it were going to blow her away. SPR

LIFESTYLES preeminent hip-hop representative for the city of Philadelphia. Pressure? I feel like because of the rich musical history and the rich history of the arts in the city of Philadelphia, to be in a position to act as ambassadors for as long as we have, is something that we take super seriously. We don’t take it for granted. We completely understand that when were are out in the world doing what we do in the further reaches of the galaxy...when we’re out traveling and doing shows, we represent an introduction to Philadelphia and what Philadelphians [to a lot of people]. Just how rich our art history is and our art education is, yeah, I feel like we represent all of that. For some people as it regards to Philly, we are all they know about the city. And after that introduction, we hope that they’ll want to dive into it [and learn more]. So yeah, no doubt it’s something I feel is an honor that we take super seriously. When’s the last time you had an opportunity to give Philly a shout out on a large scale? We were just honored on [May 8] at the prestigious Third Street Music School in New York City, where one of the newer members of The Roots, Dave Guy, learned to play

trumpet there, so we were honored by Steve Higgins the announcer of the Tonight Show and this is a school that is 100-plus years-old and is a New York institution, but the very first thing we did when [famed drummer] Questlove and I took the stage to receive our award was we gave a throwback and a shout out to the institutions in Philadelphia from which we came. We also give props to the High School for the Greater and Performing Arts and Settlement Music School and [Samuel S.] Fleischer Arts Memorial, the institutions that we are a product of. With your work schedule and being the house band of the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, how often do you even get a chance to come back to Philadelphia to get some down time, if down time is actually a thing for The Roots? [Laughs] I don’t really get much down time in Philly, but you actually caught me right now; I’m actually on the Turnpike driving back to New York City from Philly. Currently, I’m actually in Philly almost every morning. I’m training at a gym in Philly four mornings out of the week, I get my haircut in Philly still, so I’m actually there a lot, but I wouldn’t consider any of it as actual down-

time. I went and trained this morning and then I went and had breakfast at the Trolley Car Diner up in Chestnut Hill and now I’m back on the road driving through New Jersey so I can make my way up for [the taping of] The Tonight Show. So you drive 90 miles pretty much every day just to get a cut and hit the gym? Yes sir. I don’t know where else I’d go to be honest. Where do you get your fade, Tariq? I see two barbers. One which is in South Philly and the other actually [inside] Sherman Mills in East Falls. Both of which take great care of me. What’s it mean to be a Philadelphian? It’s a resilience we have that I really haven’t seen anywhere else. You know, [Frank Sinatra famously said] about New York that ‘if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere,’ and I believe that definitely rings true; but for me it rings even more true about Philly. Philly is one of the toughest audiences to do anything in front of. Ask an athlete, ask a musician, ask a comedian, ask a teacher that has to teach a

group of kids from Philadelphia; [Laughs], it’s not easy, man. It’s a no-nonsense, no BS just straight up, keep it 100 type of crowd. So with all that being said, if you can come up in all that and you’re able to survive and thrive in Philly and you go outside of the city to anywhere on Earth to [get your hustle on] and you apply that Philly hustle? You’re bound to succeed, you’re bound to win. I don’t see many people from Philly leave the city and seriously go out to try and make it and fail. I’m definitely proud to be a Philadelphian. My kids weren’t born in Philly, but I tell them they’re from Philly. They may try to argue [that point with me] but if you’re my child, you’re from Philly. The same can be said for The Roots. We’re a Philadelphia band there are people [currently in the crew] from Texas and Jamaica and New York and points near and far; we’re kind of a motley crew of musicians but I’m always going to introduce our band as “The Legendary Roots Crew” from Philadelphia, Pa., that’s understood if you work with us and something that you roll with and accept…[chuckles]...or getting rolled over. Diane’s Italian Baked Beans

Pencil in Hoagie Day

M

emorial Day weekend has arrived! It means a holiday barbecue may be in the weekend plans. You probably have the burgers, hot dogs, chicken and veggies covered, but you can’t forget about the sides, Diane Pecca, a regular contributor to the SPR recipe page, suggests going with this “Italian version of baked beans — complete with a melted Parmesan topping. There is no rule against making this dish as a main course. Pecca said she sometimes serves it with a side salad and garlic bread.

Specifically, three leading resort destinations have shown a commitment to helping AC return to its former luster. In the last two years, Caesars, while emerging from a contentious Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, has reinvested $180 million back into its three primary casinos on the strip, Caesars, Bally’s and Harrah’s Resort. The improvements have arrived in room upgrades to its hotel, better restaurants headed by some of the top chefs and restaurateurs in the country and a $125 million conference center right on the waterfront in efforts to entice both the business and leisure crowd alike. “The decline in Atlantic City is directly correlated to the proliferation of casino gaming in surrounding states,â€? Caesars Entertainment spokesperson Noel Stevenson responded via email. “However Atlantic City is well-positioned with the non-gaming amenities similar to Las Vegas with the unique destination-appeal of the beautiful beaches and the iconic Atlantic City Boardwalk.â€? The reinvestment of dollars from companies such as Caesars hasn’t gone unnoticed by travelers as its word of mouth (and a ton of ad dollars) seem to continue to bring the masses back. Gary Musich, the vice president of convention sales for Meet AC,

If the curve continues to rise, then 2017 is primed to be a year in which forecasters at Stockton University have already predicted that a stable stock market could see Atlantic City as a major slice of an estimated $20-billion pie across Jersey Shore tourism. “We have one-third of the population within the country living within drive-time of Atlantic City, so it’s a wonderful getaway experience for Philadelphians, New Yorkers and beyond,â€? Stevenson said. “Our resorts have the appeal of Las Vegas without the flight and offer something Vegas doesn’t have — ocean views, beautiful beaches and, at Harrah’s, stunning views of the Ma-

rina District bay. With A-list entertainment, first-class hotels, acclaimed celebrity-chef dining experiences, world-class spas and nightlife — our resorts in Atlantic City truly offer something for everyone. NO ONE KNOWS that better than Betty McHugh, who has spent most of her life working for the Caesars corporation in some capacity. Today, McHugh’s role is general manager of Nero’s Italian Steakhouse. For the past 15 years, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday, the steakhouse is transformed into a culinary oasis for brunch, serving everything from traditional brunch staples to fresh seafood and rolled sushi. If the three tables of amazing desserts don’t attract, the bottomless champagne cocktails and endless Bloody Mary bar will.

And it does keep them coming. Every weekend. All at an attractive $65 per person. “I’ve been here for 30 years and we’ve been open for 15, and the weekend is still my favorite day of the week, says McHugh, a classic beauty whose look fits the vibe of the restaurant she oversees. Apparently Caesars agrees, as the company carved out a section of the restaurant and affectionately named it Betty’s Back Bar, in homage to the sparkling personality who has been a staple of its AC iteration for decades. “We have customers that come back every week, I’m always seeing the same people, McHugh said. “ What’s not to love? We have a full bar, great music in the back room, a view overlooking the ocean and great food. It’s really a family here. I know that might sound cheesy but it’s true. We all care about what we are serving our guests and their experience, so it’s important to us that when they leave, they’re leaving happy. Happy customers isn’t just the mantra for Nero’s. It’s for a strip that is desperate for a renewed vigor in tourism. Atlantic City is doing its best to shred its notion of just being a destination town for the degenerate. And in doing so, it’s casinos such as Caesars, Harrah’s and Bally’s that are pouring as many dollars back into its experience to make yours as enjoyable as possible – lose all your money, but have a blast while doing it. “At our Boardwalk resorts, we debuted our all-new Wild Wild West Casino last year – recently named Atlantic City’s “Bar of The Year within a year of its debut, Stevenson said. “[We have] new restaurants [in] A.C. Burger Co., Veracruz and Coastal Craft Kitchen & Bar — as well as $3 million in enhancements to Harrah’s pool and its Pool After Dark nightclub. With A-list entertainment, first-class hotels, acclaimed celebrity-chef dining experiences, worldclass spas and nightlife — our resorts in Atlantic City truly offer something for everyone. SPR TWITTER: @SPRTSWTR

Craig Snider, one of Ed’s three sons,

said. “My dad often said, ‘It’s my way or the highway.’ Well dad, you finally got your way, the Ed Snider Way. Craig Snider added that, although he thought his father would have suggested the street be named “Flyers Way, he wasn’t getting his “way on this decision; instead the community and the fans are. He also commented on how fitting he believes it is to debut the road his father loved most, and what really was home to him, in his name. “It’s been a little over a year since our dad’s death, and it’s a perfect tribute to name a road for him, Craig said. “Some people pay their respects in cemeteries, and others look to the sky, but I think there’s only one place that you will find Ed Snider’s spirit, and that’s right here at Ed Snider Way watching over all of us and all of you.

Helping to make sure Snider’s legacy lived on at the stadiums, Johnson first came up with the idea to rename the street following Snider’s passing and amidst reflecting upon the businessman’s notable contributions to the city. Johnson explained that, not only was Snider the owner of a worldclass sports team, but he was also a great citizen who gave back to the community through his philanthropic work, including the formation of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation. “I thought it would only be fitting to name the street in the sports stadium district after him, Johnson said. “I introduced a bill last November to City Council and it passed unanimously. The Comcast-Spectacor and the City of Philadelphia then worked in a joint partnership to put [the commemoration] event together. At this unveiling event, which

took place almost exactly 50 years ago to the day the Flyers were founded, many influential Philadelphia sports businessmen and athletes were present to witness the honoring of the late Snider, including Paul Holmgren, president of the Philadelphia Flyers; David Montgomery, president of the

Philadelphia Phillies; Don Smolenski, president of the Philadelphia Eagles; John Page, president of the Wells Fargo Center; Shawn Jalosinski, president of the Sports Complex Special Services District; Chris Heck, vice president of the Philadelphia 76ers; and numerous members of the Flyer’s alumni. “Today we honor a man who is responsible for the Flyers, success of the Spectrum, the arena that stands just to my left, the Wells Fargo Center, Mr. Ed Snider, Lou Nolan, the public address announcer for the Philadelphia Flyers, said. “His impact throughout our great city, whether it be his vision, his dedication, his philanthropic efforts or his entrepreneurial spirit, will be everlasting. Johnson further explained Snider’s passion and commitment to bringing a franchise to the city has led to its sports recognition throughout the country. Furthermore, Johnson said Snider truly “stepped up to the plate when it came to helping provide young people with the opportunity to get involved in productive activities, helping them to ultimately become productive members of society. “[He did this] so they [would] become productive members of our society, as opposed to the negative things we see in our city, was another testament of his character and passion to support this great city of Philadelphia, Johnson said. Thus, for all of these reasons, ranging from his service to helping the Flyers win back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and ’75 and to attracting millions of visitors to the stadiums each year, fans can now look to Ed Snider Way as they approach one of the nation’s top sports and entertainment destinations. As Craig mentioned during his speech, Snider will simultaneously be looking back down to fans and always pulling for another Stanley Cup championship. SPR

y himself, running back LeGarrette Blount doesn’t represent the kind of addition that turns a team’s fortunes around. He’s a plus30 back who was one of the last remaining “big-name players on the free-agent market. But by signing Blount to a one-year contract, the Eagles capped off — for the moment — an impressive roster upgrade that makes them a true contender in the NFC East in the season ahead. Blount, who scored 18 rushing touchdowns last season in New England’s Super Bowl-winning year, represents the perfect fit for Philadelphia’s offense. He is a 250-pound battering ram

round pick Rasul Douglas could end up starting, and the Eagles are going to have to prove they can slow down the big-time offenses in the division. For a team that went 7-9 in Pederson’s first season at the helm, the next step is to contend for the postseason. A smart offseason of adding big-play weapons for the offense and stocking up the defensive line puts the Eagles in position to do exactly that. “We weren’t that far away last year and had we been better at finishing games, we might have been a playoff team, tight end Zach Ertz said. “Now we’ve got more experience and more depth and talent. There is a lot of confidence here. We all have to get on the same page and start fast and finish strong and we’ll be right there at the end. The Eagles haven’t been in the playoffs since 2013 and haven’t won a postseason game since ’08. In other words, it’s been way too long. The city of Philadelphia needs a winner, and this strong offseason by the Eagles may have just put the team in position to be one. Right now. SPR
