e’re reaching a fever pitch of intrigue surrounding a proposed Soda and Sweetened Beverages Tax, a creation courtesy of Mayor Jim Kenney’s administration, which hopes to collect $0.03 per ounce on sodas and sweet drinks in Philadelphia. Through the proposal, issued on March 1 and set for a late May or early June City Council vote, Kenney’s administration plans to earmark these funds for specific improvements: Pre-Kindergarten education, recreation centers, and libraries.

The debated tax has incited protests and millions of dollars in commercial campaigning from the Philadelphia Licensed Beverage Association, among others. The tax has received coverage in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal. And both Democratic presidential candidates have sounded off – Bernie Sanders is against it, Hillary Clinton supports it. Did the administration imagine it would be making national headlines with this effort? “Yeah, we definitely did. They’re a multi-billion dollar company, and we’re passing a tax that would set a precedent for the industry, Lauren Hitt, the mayor’s spokesperson,

said referring to the giants at the top of this chain, Coca-Cola and Pepsi. The very idea that this tax is a “Grocery Tax is a tactic that seems powerfully successful. “We have never referred to it as a grocery tax, it’s a nickname that the Grocery Tax Coalition is using as a scare tactic, Hitt added. “The Grocery Tax Coalition has worked really hard to reinforce that conception. The message from City Hall says that the tax is on the industry and the distributor, not on the consumer. But that’s been a hard sell. At the Philadelphia Crosstown ASS A=2/ B/F ^OUS ,,

ver his 53-year, rarely-a-dull-moment life, John Tenaglia has nourished lasting love for opera and wife Joan. Eager to sing the praises of each amazing influence, he will pull double duty Saturday through “Tutto Verismo, a gala concert through which he will laud Italian masters and perform with his pride of nearly 29 years. “She has taught me so much, including perseverance and vocal presentation and preservation, the product of the 2700 block of Dudley Street said from John’s Custom

Through pieces by Giuseppe Verdi and verismo pioneers Umberto Giordano, Pietro Mascagni, and Giacomo Puccini, the Grays Ferry native and his peers will show not only their appreciation for the selections but also their gratitude for their livelihood. “You can never take anything for granted in this line of work, Tenaglia said of his vocation, making a particularly powerful point as his partner struggles with hearing deficiency. “I am humbled and honored to do what a composer asks, and I am happiest when I put my feet on a stage because I’m hoping to sir emotions within audience members and help them to see the significance of this art. The indebted interpreter noted that no endeavor ever finds him falling for the belief that he is anything more than a conduit for the greatness of others. To the Editor: This letter is in reference to the editorial that Joseph Myers wrote concerning his support for individuals with mental illness (“Mental sentinels, May 12). I have worked more than 10 years for a Philadelphia agency dealing with an elderly population diagnosed with mental illness. Many do not have the support of family and are confronted with many stigmas. The people I work with have inspired me with their strength and compassion that I wish others could see. I have the experience in my own family with an intellectually disabled mother and father with mental illness. I was lucky enough to be raised by relatives but felt ashamed for a long time because of the stigma that my family felt. Your editorial has given me hope that there are others who are

empathic to those afflicted due to no fault of their own. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and understanding. :W\RO 4`SSR[O\ 3OUZSdWZZS

A^WZZ bVS \Sea To the Editor: Do you know that there are invisible oil spills leaking into our air every day? These invisible spills are methane gas. Methane is the waste of natural gas extraction and transportation. Pound for pound, methane is 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide for trapping greenhouse gases. In 2014, the gas and oil industry leaked nine million met-

ric tons of methane pollution into the air. Every day we breathe and absorb this methane waste, along with smog forming volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and one specifically insidious toxic air pollutant: benzene. There is some good news. The Environmental Protection Agency has just finalized a first protective measure. We now have a Federal Methane Leakage Standard for new and modified natural gas infrastructure like well pads, pipelines and compressor stations. These federal safeguards are proven, low-cost safeguards. We need to take the next step and maximize public safety to include the existing natural gas infrastructure within this rule. We already have an aging network of gas pipelines that connect all our homes. There are plans to expand our fossil fuel infrastructure to make Philadelphia an “energy hub. Couldn’t we better deploy resources and create jobs to secure the safety of our existing infrastructure and most importantly our citizens? “I’m a little surprised we’re that low. People are putting in great efforts to make healthy choices, so maybe these other cities have just had more practice, so to speak. Toni Frangipani, 13th and Bigler streets

To the Editor: I went to Popi’s Italian Restaurant for an event last week, and it was so nice to be with friends that I haven’t seen for years while listening to some great music and dancing. It was only then that I realized how much I missed it because as they say, “you don’t stop dancing because you get old, you get old because you stop dancing. I happen to agree with this wholeheartedly because age to me has always been more of a state of mind rather than a reality. Anyway, it had me thinking about all the beautiful vacant buildings that we have in our own backyard, and I thought it would be great for someone to open these establishments once again as a restauarant/club. I can name a few vacant buildings that may have the potential to be successful. One is La “I’m surprised that we’re on there at all. I don’t see too many people when I go to the gym, and I think there are too many fast food places in this city, especially near our gyms. John Oliver, Southwest Philadelphia

Stanza/Loft located on 20th Street and Oregon Avenue. The Loft was very popular in the 1970s and ’80s, so I was very happy to see it re-open after many years and have always felt that it was perfect for us city dwellers who enjoy going out yet prefer staying local, but, sadly it closed once again. I believe it is going to be an Asian restaurant that may be very nice, but, again, not a social scenario. There is also Paradise Gardens located on 15th and Ritner streets, a banquet hall that has been left vacant for many years. It is a very neighborhood place that would be sure to raise the value of this area. I realize that so much effort needs to go toward running these types of places, but I also believe that it would be a great success because we are lacking social entertainment in the city. We have many great restaurants, and that is very nice, but I know many people would like some nightclub entertainment, so that seems to be what we need right now. There is another empty building where Drug Emporium was years ago, and I do remember it being very large inside. I would love to see some diversity in our local shops because we certainly don’t need another nail salon; we have one on almost every corner. I never understood why we have so much wasted space when there are so many ways they could be occupied. I would love to see a department store come in to South Philly so that we wouldn’t have to go to a mall if we want to shop. I do go into Center City quite often, but if we had more choices, it would be much more convenient to stay here. I’m sure we would all rather patronize our great city. We are experiencing many wonderful transitions so having some places to go after dinner could only be considered an asset. Maybe these abandoned buildings will get a second look from someone who is a position to recreate them, and although there are no guarantees for any business becoming a success, it may be a chance worth taking. 2SPPWS @caaW\] A]cbV >VWZORSZ^VWO

n Monday, the Philadelphia Police Department issued the image of Chassity E. Harris, whom they say nobody has seen at her residence on the 1700 block of South Napa Street since on or about February 8. The entity added that on February 13, at least one person burglarized, ransacked, and trashed her abode. A flier regarding her disappearance notes the 28-year-old is a mother to three children with whom she constantly communicated, though her descendants have also not heard from her. Other relatives noted that she also kept in contact with them but has not done so, with a lack of Mother’s Day outreach particularly perplexing. If anyone has seen the Grays Ferry resident, who has boxing gloves tattoo with a child’s name and birth date on her right arm, contact South Detectives Division at 215-686-3013 with DC#16-17-016676, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Authorities are after two men who robbed and assaulted a male in Dickinson Square West. At midnight Friday, the complainant stood on the corner of Fifth and Dickinson streets, texting someone who had indicated a desire to purchase an iPhone 6 he had placed on Facebook for sale, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. /ZZ b]] Q][[]\ Two daring individuals pulled off the ever-common robbery of a delivery man in South of South. At 11:40 p.m. Friday, the driver for Xing Yang Chinese Restaurant attempted to make a delivery on the 2000 block of St. Albans Street, needing to contact the store to have someone call the number attached to the order since nobody answered, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A male soon appeared in the second-floor window of the location and told the complainant nobody from that location had placed any order. As he was leaving, the worker, having confirmed with his employer that nobody had answered at the

provided number, found himself in the presence of the unknown figures, one of whom placed an object in his back as the other went through his pockets. Removed of $16 and the food, the complainant said they fled westbound on St. Albans Street toward 21st Street. He described the aggressors as black, in their 20s, and 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10, and having medium builds, with the first wearing a light-colored T-shirt and blue jeans, and his partner donning a black hoodie and blue jeans. The thief received $45 and ran away from the location, heading westbound on Snyder Avenue. The employee described the criminal as black and approximately 40 years old; having a dark complexion; wearing a tan hat, a green sweatshirt, and green pants; and armed with the aforementioned weapon. tain, announcers will often refer to the final moments as “garbage time. I could easily engage in my own application of this term by wading through the waste that could rival my inbox arrivals for consistency. 5) Listen to people as they complain about their lives: I consider myself a very sympathetic and empathetic guy, but some of the stuff that I hear on the streets and on buses really makes me ponder how little gratitude some people possess. It’s OK if your overpriced iced skinny mocha arrived with just enough time for you to rush to your hair appointment, my dear. As for the flat tire on your expensive sports car, air your complaints elsewhere, dude. 4) Spend a whole day on Broad and Snyder: Photographer Tina Garceau and I often cover this thoroughfare when conducting our Word on the Street inquiries, and I know that putting in a day’s worth of observational time on it would strike me as less weird and troublesome than looking for the Sixers to hold a team under 100 points. 3) Retrieve my recycling bin from halfway down my block: If the collectors come soon enough, I can take my bin back inside my home and know it is ready to handle my next batch of recyclables. If I am unfortunate, I end up wondering why many of the workers have not signed lucrative contracts to be professional discus throwers. 2) Go to Acme on a late Sunday morning: This one is really one of those firstworld problems, as I am fortunate to have a supermarket only a couple blocks from me. I used to frequent it on a Friday night, but as I have grown older, my sanity has abandoned me somewhat, and I feel pulled to go there on late Sunday mornings. Even though I chide myself for doing so, I would still pick that frustration over the brand that would come from engaging in hoopla for our hoopsters. 1) Try to climb the grease pole: I went to the 9th Street Italian Market Festival Sunday afternoon and caught a few folks attempting to climb the 30-foot grease pole. Nobody succeeded, but I bet a few chiropractors have been quite happy this week. This time next year, when the Sixers (Simmons included, I hope) have failed to make the playoffs, perhaps I will honor my having abstained from their performances by having someone use my shoulders as boosters in engaging in an activity as fruitless as heading to the Wells Fargo Center and hoping for competitive play. he Philadelphia 76ers scored the top pick in this year’s draft lottery, with many fans hoping they will select Louisiana State University star Ben Simmons. I despise any sense of entitlement, and this 19-year-old is abounding in it, saying he would rather play for the Los Angeles Lakers. Kid, shut up, and go play for whatever team takes you. Part of me hopes he ends up here just so I can hold a grudge against him. Regardless of his destination, I still will not enjoy watching the team, whose recent futility inspired me to list 10 lackluster South Philly-based activities that I would engage in before subjecting myself to their efforts. 10) Attempt to diminish the size of my inbox: As I type these words, my South Philly Review inbox contains 18,008 emails. In my six years here, it has always seemed that as soon as I empty the thing, some sort of signal goes out to people to alert them to flood me with correspondence. Some of the pitches are quite odd, such as invitations to cover events in Atlanta and Seattle (we have enough rain here, thank you very much!), but reading them is better than wishing that professional basketball had a mercy rule. 9) Hope for any SEPTA bus to come on time: The South Philly Review is close to the beginning of the line for routes 4 and 45, so one would think that I would luck out when needing either to head to a story. If wishes were buses, I would end up with punctured hopes. 8) Receive scratches from my cats: Basil and Louise are fearless felines, so I am sure I could coax them into scratching my eyes out should I ever utter “Ooooh, the Sixers are on tonight. 7) Scream at the clouds to unleash more rain: I would prefer finding myself fending off tempests to watching Simmons or his peers go for a rainbow shot. If my power were to go out 82 times a year, I would have another reason to thank God for the blessings in my life. 6) Trip over all the trash: When the outcome of any timed sporting event seems cer-

wo of the leaders of Philadelphia’s summery programming goodness are getting ready to provide the masses with spaces and places to gather, have a drink, rollerskate, eat, and convene outdoors. That’s right, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is back with its pair of pop-ups – the South Philly location on South Street is now considered its “flagship, but it’s entering new territory with a second site at 10th and Hamilton streets in the Callowhill section. With the help of the Pew Center for Arts & Hertigate, the society will be establishing a summer-long build-up to the beginning of construction on the Reading Viaduct Trail. And then there’s the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation (DRWC), who has been providing free or affordable entertainment on the eastern edge of our city for decades. But this year marks the second season and grand return of rollerskating on the river at the Blue Cross RiveRink Summerfest. The pop-ups open June 1, and Summerfest debuts tomorrow. The PHS Pop Up Garden at South Street will be operated by Khyber Pass Pub with an opening celebration June 1 at 5:30 p.m. There will be “sweet potato summer rolls with chipotle-hoisin sauce, Italian charcuterie and cheese with roasted olives, artichoke salad, pickled mushrooms and fig toast, bacon guacamole, fire-toasted salsa and spicy corn chips. For drinks, they’ll be doing daquiris, Margarita Mondays, Brewsday Tuesdays, South Street Gulps on Wednesdays, all in Karen Regan’s lush

landscaped “magical retreat with the city skyline as a backdrop, according to a release from PHS. In Callowhill, PHS communications guru Alan Jaffe says “this is a very new thing for us. Construction of a three-mile rail park is set to begin in the fall, but in the meantime, his employer has “Walter Hood, who is a rock star landscape architect in the U.S. – he’s in Oakland, CA and he came out to visit when we were exploring the site. Jaffe says it’ll be an oasis in a “gritty, industrial neighborhood. Friends of the Rail Park and the Historical Society of Pennsylvania will curate a park that’s “a rare combination of historic preservation, contemporary planning, and green advocacy. Top Chef alum Jason Cichonski and chef Sylva Senat have developed a concept called The Bun Box, offering an array of steamed buns, plus guac, chicken, curry and churros. They’ve even tapped a Philadelphian, Abby Sohn, for a site-specific sound installation on display underneath the Viaduct. On South Street, they’ll be open seven days a week: 5 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 2 p.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday. In Callowhill, they’ll be open Wednesday through Sunday: 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 2 p.m. to midnight on Friday and Saturday; and noon to 10 p.m. on Sunday. “This year we made a big investment – we’re putting a surface down similar to a tennis court and it’s going to be painted to have a river effect, says Quinn Logan from the DRWC, discussing the rollerskating surface at Summerfest. “Parts of

the rink will have clear plexi-glass boards, so part of the rink will be see-through. Skating is free for Independence Blue Cross cardholders, $3 for admission to open skate and $10 for rentals. There’s also mini-golf this year with nine holes designed by local artists with reclaimed, recycled materials, and it’s $5 to golf. Chickie’s and Pete’s Waterfront Crabshack is providing the eats, as is Franklin Fountain with ice cream, shakes and floats. “We’re trying to connect all the parks for a nice weekend along the waterfront, Logan said, hinting at the possibility of a scenic, slow crawl from Pier 68 at 1751 S. Columbus Blvd. to the Washington Avenue Pier at Columbus Boulevard and Washington Avenue, up to Spruce Street Harbor Park, Summerfest, and the Race Street Pier. And that doesn’t even touch on the bounties of Penn’s Landing programming. Look for: Philly Beer Week at the Harbor Park June 4 to 12; a Natural Lands Trust scavenger hunt June 12 (1 to 3 p.m. at Pier 68); LGBT Pride Fest June 12; Screenings Under the Stars Thursdays in July and August (save for the Democratic National Convention Thursday, July 21) at the Great Plaza; Smooth Jazz Summer Nights on Fridays in August; and the amazing PECO Multicultural Series at Penn’s Landing, starting with the Irish American Festival June 5 and concluding with Brazilian Day September 25. rank Freda possessed a name that would please lovers of alliteration and a special spirit that made everyone who knew him well feel at ease. The native of the 2200 block of South Bucknell Street, highly respected for his leading role on “Diver Dan and his insightful stage writings, died in New York City April 13 at age 79. The West Passyunk product graduated from South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St., in 1954 and shortly after headed to The Big Apple to chase professional glory. Success initially came through the aforementioned show, a series of live-action shorts for children. In keeping with his calling as a stirrer of emotions, he also penned numerous plays, including “Lunchtime, the winner of the Waldo Bellow Memorial Award, and established a durable relationship with the recently-shuttered Society Hill Playhouse. “He was very good-hearted, MaryAnn Calvello, of the 1800 block of West Moyamensing Avenue, said of her brother, who would have celebrated his birthday on June 1. “He always gave very practical advice and was a pretty deep thinker. Refraining from buying a cell phone or a computer, Mr. Freda leaves behind for his family, which, in addition to Calvello mainly consists of sister Jane Froio, son Philip Sr., and grandsons Philip Jr. and Matthew, the recollection of amazing conversations. “We are better people for having had him in our lives, Calvello offered. “Through the show, his writings, and our memories, we’ll always treasure him. - By Joseph Myers A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/briefs.

SODA TAX continued from page 1 Coalition’s Sugar/Soda Tax Debate Monday night at the United Way on the Ben Franklin Parkway, with seven of the 20 association constituents based in South Philly, former Republican mayoral candidate Sam Katz moderated two speakers: Donna Cooper spoke in favor while South of South Neighborhood Association chairperson and Philadelphia Beverage Association attorney Lauren Vidas spoke against the tax. The latter opened by saying that “the Sugar Sweetened Beverage Tax, while the intentions are good, is not the way to go. Cooper’s opening was more verbose. The former Ed Rendell Deputy Mayor of Policy and Planning and current executive director of Public Citizens for Children + Youth (PCCY) said “70% of students start school without the benefits of Pre-K. We’re here because we think Pre-K is the great equalizer. She went on to say that most of Philly’s rec centers were built before most people in the room were born, that “Big Soda (as Kenney called it in a press conference) sees revenues larger than the gross domestic product of some countries, and that they’re “profiting from the poor. Lower-income and minority Philadelphians have been referred to a great deal in the debate: that they’re targeted by the soda industry; that they’re the most affected by tax; that they’re less empowered to avoid the tax, like middle- and upperincome Philadelphians are. Health benefits seem to be touted as a side-effect of the tax from the administration, not the sole purpose – but many locals are keenly aware of the dangers of obesity and dia-

betes, especially in lower-income and minority neighborhoods. Philadelphians for a Fair Future organized a news conference at Puentes de Salud, 1700 South St., Monday that saw Philly’s Health Commissioner, Tom Farley, pulling 58 linked sugar packets out of a 64-ounce soda cup. Many alarming facts were shared as support of the Sugar Tax: Diabetes now affects 15 percent of Philadelphians, nearly one in five African Americans; Americans living below the poverty line are twice as likely to have diabetes as those with double their income; and, according to the 2015 Southeastern Pennsylvania Household Health Survey, 24 percent of adults living in the 19146 zip code have been diagnosed with diabetes. MAYOR KENNEY DRINKS Diet Pepsi, says Hitt, and a lot of it. She argues that, “last May, voters were given the option to vote for whether the city should form a commission on Universal Pre-K and more people have voted for that than any other ballot initiative in nine years, she said, adding with a chuckle that “it beat all the mayoral candidates except Kenney – “he edged it out by a few votes. “We need a way to fund these things that people have said loudly and strongly that they want, Hitt explained. Kenney’s spokesperson says this is “a tax that people can opt out of, one of the fairest options we could come up with. Vidas argued on Monday night that Philadelphians would, in fact, not be able to avoid it and suggested that the Mayor hopes to fund his well-intentioned “legacy tax on low-income grocery bills. The phrase “this is a tax that won’t be paid for by Philadelphians – that is false, she said. “Small mom-and-pop restaurants, bodegas, these are the folks that are going to

be paying the tax. If we care about these issues, we need to find a stable, long-term source of revenue. There are a lot of uncertainties about this tax. Harold Honickman, a Rittenhouse resident who’s earned upwards of $850 million in the local soda bottling industry and was ranked 277 on a Forbes list of wealthiest 400 Americans, has ushered in a soda lobby spending spree to prevent the tax to the tune of $1.7 million. He, like Vidas, points to the tax collection problems that trouble Philadelphia. “The tax is great politics and bad execution, Vidas said. “When you’re not collecting what you’re already owed by initiating a new tax? That’s bad policy. (Quiet asides immediately after the de-

bate saw whispers of bonds the City’s keeping afloat and that this money would just get injected into a general fund.) Cooper said “I remember when the liquor-by-the-drink tax was passed, and this feels like deja-vu – the same voices against it are the same voices now. So-called “vice taxes, on cigarettes and liquor, have met mixed results in the past, but Cooper said both have been a boon for local budget inflows. Similarly, a $0.01 per ounce tax passed in Berkley, CA and a nationwide tax in Mexico have been cited as potential measures of success. “Mexico saw its obesity level drop by 12 percent, she argued. “The Cigarette Tax was an increase of $2 per pack, and the School District estimated about $50 million would come from that. The Liquor Tax hit its mark and has grown every year since. The world’s going to be different! she fake-argued. “Thousands would be unemployed and there would be lawsuits! she said was the initial reaction to both of those proposed, relatively successful taxes. But that wasn’t what happened. Vidas hinted that so-called “Big Soda would litigate this tax and that “if you’re going to do a vice tax, you have to do it on a large scale so you can’t go to the next town or county over. SPR Contact Staff Writer Bill Chenevert at bchenevert@southphillyreview.com or ext. 117. Carmen Craig-Williams Public School Educator Southwest Philadelphia I’ve been teaching for 24 years. As an educator, I want to believe this tax would mean more money for the classroom. But I can’t really say where the money is going to go. We pay enough in taxes already. I should be worried about whether or not my students know their times tables tomorrow, not a grocery tax.

ver his 53-year, rarely-a-dull-moment life, John Tenaglia has nourished lasting love for opera and wife Joan.

Stairs, 2115 S. Eighth St., his family’s 85-year-old Lower Moyamensing-based business. “Having this opportunity will be another stop on what has been a wonderful ride. The baritone and his soprano spouse will take to the Perelman Theater of The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts at 8 p.m., joining seven other standouts and accompanist Richard Raub for a tribute to works teeming with a concentration on realism. Enamored with the possibilities present within each offering, he will belt out his signature aria, “Nemico della patria from Giordano’s “Andrea Chenier, and

B?<;IJOB;I will team with Joan for the Alfio/Santuzza duet from Mascagni’s timeless “Cavalleria Rusticana. Having considered holding the celebration within his establishment, where he also encourages budding voices through studio work, Tenaglia hit a crescendo when pondering what the Center City-situated gathering could yield. “It’s easy to shy away from or completely ignore opera, he shrugged. “I fear that America is becoming a cultureless country, and there are many casualties because of that, with opera being a heavy one. How can you hear the fat lady or, in my case, the fat guy sing if there are chances drying up all the time? These are truly great works of art, so I’m all about promoting them. Having a show at The Kimmel Center goes a long way, I hope, toward doing that. Music is vital, especially to the youngest among us, and these are great composers who will forever inspire me to give thanks each time I open my mouth. TENAGLIA TOUTS HIS passion as “something that gives me a place to ponder what’s beyond our immediate sense of awareness. He found his fascination fomenting at age

14, familiarizing himself with the work of tenor and South Philly staple Frank Munafo and soon joined the choir at South Philadelphia High School, 2101 S. Broad St. He enjoyed great exposure in his early years, yet he lacked an immensely important component in acquiring constant confidence. “I needed a sense of maturity, he confessed. “There were times where I think I was minus much direction, and I’d say I didn’t really learn to sing until I was in my 30s. It was during that period where I gained a little finesse. Much like commended actors and actresses, the Bridesburg resident refuses to dub himself “good at his craft, contending “You’re never satisfied because there’s always something that you can improve on. Dually deeming his skill a gift and a curse, the latter because of its frequent separation of him from his family over the years, he has accumulated an undeniably stunning list of credits, no matter how modestly he esteems them. “Titles and awards are great, but I’m mainly about the interactions because I’m a people person, he said. “I feel that too often, singers become more focused on

themselves and not the material. We really need to scrap the selfishness for the sake of the sanctity of our calling. Not electing to approach his track record with a dismissive wave of the hand as its owner might do, this writer highly regards Tenaglia for handling, among many other embodiments, the roles of Rigoletto in Verdi’s opera of the same name and Count Almaviva in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s opera buffa “The Marriage of Figaro; for performing with the New York City Opera, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Opera Theater; for contributing to oratorio pieces; and for emerging as either a victor or a finalist in numerous competitions, including ones named for Luciano Pavarotti and Mario Lanza, the latter a fellow South Philly son. “It’s really all about the music, Tenaglia mused. “The Kimmel Center is a terrific location, and we’re exceptionally fortunate to be there, but I can sing anywhere because the music is the same. Geography isn’t important in the least. I’m happy just to sing. No matter the age of the ears that will hear him wherever he heads, the booming

baritone, whose background also includes a teaching stint with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and a 26-year haul as the music director and conductor of the adult choir and orchestra at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church in Merchantville, New Jersey, aims to exalt the creators of such endearing masterpieces, tabbing his participation in their veneration as “an intense joy. Blessed with a loving life partner, with whom he and brother Frank traveled across the country years ago as the Tenaglia Trio, children Richie and Francesca, a polished career that has led to his christening as “Johnny Stairs, and a ripe reputation as a winemaker, with ample Vendemmia honors as proof, he has certainly kept his life in tune and is definitely eager to encourage literal and figurative encores. “There’s much more to say musically and more obstacles to address, Tenaglia said. “I haven’t lowered the curtain on anything just yet. A>@ Visit kimmelcenter.org. ncle Nunzi reached in the refrigerator for some of Vito’s homemade wine. He really doesn’t like Vito because he constantly cheats at cards and brags a lot. But good wine is good wine, so he is willing to overlook his friend’s failings. Uncle used to make wine before his arthritis (Uncle calls it his “arthuritis) forced him to quit and accept Vito’s wine. For Uncle, accepting the offering was as difficult as it must have been for Lee to hand over his sword to Grant at Appomattox. Uncle’s main objection to Vito, besides his habit of cheating at cards, is his constant bragging. Vito owns a pair of high-top black Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers that he claims were captured from the Germans in World War II. Even if you gave Vito the benefit of the doubt, which Uncle claimed would be your first mistake, his claim that he had won an Olympic medal in track wearing those sneakers was a bridge too far. According to Uncle Nunzi, Vito is a braggart, a spaccone. Uncle prefers the Italian word “spaccone to “braggart because he says it expresses more clearly how he feels. Uncle pours me a glass of Vito’s wine from a bottle still bearing a prune juice label and places the glass in front of me despite my objections. A few pieces of what had once been fresh peaches float unhappily in my glass like survivors in a zombie apocalypse facing an uncertain future. I take a tentative sip, and my face cringes as if I were on a desert island and the only recording I had was Debby Boone singing “You Light Up My Life. Uncle interrupts my search for other clever analogies. “Vito is like Donald Trump, he says. I must interject a note here about Uncle’s politics. His sense of politics is a distinct distrust of both major parties. If you look up the word “anarchist in the dictionary, I suspect that you’ll find a smiling picture of Uncle. In truth, Uncle’s main reason for his suspicion of political parties is that they are made up of human beings and there is nothing Uncle is more skeptical of than the human race. He often wonders out loud how we have managed to survive this long. It is important to note that when Uncle discusses human frailty, he seems to exclude himself, as if he is an alien who somehow got trapped here eons ago. Trump has managed to distinguish himself in Uncle’s view by trumping (the pun is intended) even Vito

in his boasting. Vito may be a spaccone, but, in Uncle’s eyes, Trump is the chief of all the spaccones. Uncle does not admit to being wild about Hillary Clinton, but I think he’s a bit fond of her. He claims he only likes her when compared to Trump, but he’s taken to calling her “Hil. Uncle is not comfortable being considered a liberal, not even when the word is softened to “progressive to fit 2016 standards. He trusts her more when it comes to having a finger on the nuclear button. Says Uncle, “Trump would push the button just so he could brag that he was the first one to do so until somebody reminded him that Harry Truman did it twice before him. I comment that Trump would likely ask, “Who is Harry Truman? I have often wondered why Uncle votes at all because of his negative attitude toward politics. He explains it by saying that life is nothing but bad choices. By his own admission, Uncle has never missed voting in an election. He does not believe in “get out the vote drives because a higher turnout dilutes his own vote. If he would admit it, Uncle would love it if no one but himself voted. He can’t believe that his intelligent, thoughtful vote is neutralized when that ignorant stunod Vito is allowed in the voting booth. Uncle’s opinion of democracy went down the tubes the moment he learned that his friend Vito would also have the right to vote. I don’t even attempt a counterargument, and you wouldn’t either if you ever met Vito. Uncle believes Vito is secretly a Trump voter. In perhaps his wisest move, Vito keeps his voting preference to himself. In his working years, he was employed at a fruit stand, but his constant tardiness got him fired. Uncle says Vito’s political motto is Make America Late Again. It is Uncle’s credo that all spaccones stick together. I was curious as to how that would work since braggarts believe only in themselves. Wouldn’t spaccones incessantly argue which one of them is the greatest? “That’s the thing about spaccones, Uncle said, “they appreciate the art of boasting (although Uncle used the more earthy term that is not fit for a family newspaper). Uncle predicts that only another spaccone could be Trump’s Vice President and hints that Trump could actually name himself Vice President since he truly believes that he - Trump - is irreplaceable. Uncle actually likes Ben Carson, although he thinks the physician is as crazy as a loon. He brags less than any of them, according to Uncle. I think Carson speaks so softly that his voice is out of the range of Uncle’s hearing aid. Uncle has an idea. When Trump shouts “Crooked Hillary, she should retort “Spaccone Trump. SPR

spiring dish. Basil gave the little pasta pillows an eye-appealing hue. Toasted pine nuts and basil produce a tasty pesto, and this one succeeded beautifully. English peas are still in season. Pasta and peas is a classic dish. The addition of speck added a slightly salty taste that was not overwhelming. The braised pork shank ($30) was tender but a little dry in spots. It was placed on a pool of rich, creamy, homestyle polenta, like Nona would make. But instead of the usual addition of Parmesan, Millon knew creamy ripe taleggio would be a perfect substitution in this dish. Pickled fennel added another flavor dimension to the entrÊe. I often order an entrÊe because the use of a specific vegetable is included. Baby artichokes are in season. Millon fried them to a splendid crispy state and used them as an accent for the skate wing. I make skate at home. I always dust it with seasoned flour before it hits the hot pan of olive oil and butter. This version ($28) was pan seared with salt and pepper. I found it too salty, so I asked for the preparation of a second order. It was nicely seasoned this time and topped with tiny bits of sweet red peppers and caper berries. All it required was a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Service was excellent. Servers and assistant servers clear and serve and keep a perfect pace for a fine meal. I particularly liked the menu. There are 17 items that comprise antipasti, primi and secondi. Three sides are also available. A Mano will definitely serve the Fairmount and Logan Square neighborhoods well. But I suspect all of you who enjoy Wentz’s marvelous French flavors at Townsend will want to select a bottle of fine Italian wine and enjoy what Millon and his staff have created. Three-and-a-half tips of the toque to A Mano.

ilence resounds as a golden gift for many individuals, but Michael Seccia considers bustle a boon. Since 2009, he has handled hungry patrons’ hankerings at Cosmi’s Deli, 1501 S. Eighth St., extending his family’s 84-year-old connection to the community. “We’re the recipients of their dedication because we’re loyal to their preferences, the 47-year-old said within his Passyunk Square establishment. “We’re big on pleasing our customers because we know there are so many tastes to cater to. Those propensities have never failed to receive regard from the New Jersey dweller, whose uncle, Cosimo Quattrone, established Cosmi’s Supermarket & Grocery Store in 1932 and whose father, Leon, oversaw operations before he assumed the leadership role. Working at least 60 hours per week, Seccia never runs short of opportunities to collect feedback from guests, many of whom have been keeping him and his predecessors busy for decades. “We get our fuel from knowing they’re full, the poetic proprietor stated. “We’re big into being versatile because we know we’re working with different generations and walks of life. Dealing with such diversity has led Seccia to craft a massive menu that could require a few minutes from which to select, as it teems with tempting choices. Cosmi’s commitment A>@ to quality control has bred national exposure, too, with Seccia proud to tout love from America’s Best Bites, Food Paradise, ESPN College GameDay, and FOX 29’s Breakfast with Bob. He also delights in having a dedicated, tenured staff to prepare the site’s offerings, including / ;O\] the Chicken Cutlet Lagasse whose recipe he "" 4OW`[]c\b /dS elected to divulge. # !$ " “There’s a great neighborhood feel around O[O\]^VWZZg Q][ here, and the food places are always supportive of one another, Seccia said, noting his affinity Comment on this restaurant or review at southfor the Termini family, responsible for Termini phillyreview.com/food-and-drink/reviews. of here knowing they’ve made a great choice, and the Lagasse, in my book, is just that. Priced at $8.50 for inclusion on a hoagie roll and $10.50 for presence on seeded bread, the sandwich, whose cutlets’ cutting, trimming, and hand breading occur on site, has “your choice of greens listed as the final element of its menu description, with Seccia noting broccoli rabe makes an apt pick. No matter one’s craving, the finished product stands to prove a cut above other cutlet creations. “Our burger business has really taken off, too, but you can’t argue with cutlets, Seccia said.

The site also gives patrons a choice of greens, with the owner suggesting that those looking to try this recipe at home likewise load their creations with veggies.A>@ Comment at southphillyreview.com/food-anddrink/features.

hen Chef Townsend Wentz opened his eponymous French restaurant on East Passyunk Avenue two years ago, it immediately became a fine addition to the neighborhood. Wentz, who worked at The Fountain at the Four Seasons Hotel under Jean-Marie “Papa LaCroix also turned McCrossen’s, a Fairmount pub, into a French-inspired place for fine food and drink. Townsend, the restaurant, 1623 E. Passyunk Ave., featured French cuisine at its best. Now, Wentz has turned his culinary attention to Italy. A Mano, which means “by hand in Italian, opened several months ago in a former grocery store in Fairmount. The man in charge is Chef Michael Millon, who had already worked with Wentz. The casual restaurant is BYOB, but it does not take reservations or credit cards. We were fortunate we did not have to wait for a table. The place has a brightly lit open kitchen, calming green and white walls, and a friendly staff. Homemade focaccia and soft butter helped to calm my appetite. Our server opened our wine, and we perused the menu. The bill of fare clearly explains how Italians enjoy dinner: Antipasti, primi, and secondi. Seared Spanish octopus ($15) was a warm and welcoming dish to begin our culinary journey to Italy. The octopus was beautifully seared and cut into bite-size pieces. Tiny cockles, still in their dark shells, played off against the spicy bits of chorizo and tender white beans. Octopus can be chewy but Millon’s version hit the mark. Gremolata, which is grated lemon rind, added a lively, slightly acidic flavor to this starter. Tripe ($12) may be an acquired taste. It is rather bland so the ingredients used to create a complete dish help make it the main attraction. Millon slow-braised the tripe in a spicy tomato sauce (I want the recipe), with guanciale, or pig cheeks, and added chickpeas for texture. The combination of flavors and textures was spot on. We used pieces of bread to sop up the rich sauce. Primi is the pasta course. We selected cauliflower mezzaluna ($14) and potato-goat cheese gnocchi ($15). Mezzaluna, which means “halfmoon in Italian, is also a chopping instrument used throughout Europe. When Millon did was make “pasta from half-moons of cauliflower, cooked them so they retained a bit of crunch, and topped them with a sauce prepared with brown butter and balsamic vinegar. He added almonds and bits of crushed amaretti for a touch of sweetness. This sauce was culinary genius. The use of almonds is often Sicilian, but I think he created the sauce in A Mano’s kitchen. Bravo. Blending potatoes with tangy goat cheese to produce light pillowy gnocchi was another in-

individual challenges and third-place in the 100 meter high hurdles. “I might be a bit biased, of course, but I’m incredibly proud of her dedication, father Lincoln Townsend, the coach of the accomplished seven-member-strong outfit, said of his daughter. “Coming back in April from an injury that had kept her out since November, she really proved her tenacity. The patriarch has experienced similar secondary and primary joy within the world of track and field, as his son, Todd, likewise ran to renown when at Neumann-Goretti, graduating in 2013, and he left foes out of breath, too, as a competitor, with qualifying for the 1988 and ’92 Olympic Trials in the 400 meter dash among his accomplishments. The overseer noted that he stresses the process over the product, estimating that track and field is 20 percent physical and 80 percent mental. That cerebral emphasis has greatly benefited his offspring, with Sydni happy to pit her concentration against that of her adversaries. “I see myself as a leader for the team, the Collingdale denizen divulged. “We go up against some pretty talented teams, so if we stress believing in ourselves each

time, we’re going to remain in the hunt for championships. THANKS TO HER father and mother Jonette, Sydni has received considerable encouragement in her sporting endeavors. The couple started the Delco Stallions in 2003, with their little girl quickly considering their efforts vital to her maturation. Winning her first national championship at age 8, she spent the next four years really honing her admiration for the different disciplines, deciding just shy of adolescence that she could make track and field a big part of her life. “It’s really helped me to feel confident and composed, Sydni said of the calling that has compelled her to compete in numerous state and national championship duels. “I owe a lot to track and field. Because of her track record, she felt no intimidation when beginning her high school career and has spent her first two years making area foes find something within them to counter her conviction, endeavors that have not proven successful at all. “I still find myself a bit stunned with everything, the humble youngster said of her South Philly-based journey. “I want to keep improving as an individual and as a teammate because there’s always room

for improvement and always someone pushing you to grow. “Last year was amazing, but this year is even more phenomenal, Lincoln added, singling out the District 12 prowess. “We’re going to use the summer to recharge so that we’re ready for productive indoor and outdoor seasons. Before the calendar calls for a break, the Saints will head to Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania today for the state championships. If all goes according to their wishes, Sydni will have many tales to spin, albeit of the actual variety. “It gives me a different sort of satisfaction, she said of her output, some of which appears on fanfiction.net. “I’d like to do something writing-related in college, but there’s plenty of time to figure out what that will be and how track and field will continue to be a factor in who I am. “If she wanted to walk away from this, I’d be happy as long as that is what she truly wants, Lincoln said. “I want for her to explore and test herself no matter what she chooses. SPR Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted.
