A South Philly author has penned a very South Philly play for Simpatico Theatre Project, where pride takes on new meaning. NĂŠ0g 0WZZ 1VS\SdS`b R e v i e w S ta f f W r i t e r

play’s debut doesn’t usually catch front-page attention at the South Philly Review, but these are extenuating circumstances: the play is set in South Philly; the playwright has lived in South Philly for 11 years; the director, star, and scenic designer are South Philadelphians; and it’s a play that celebrates a pride in our histories, something with which many locals can identify. Simpatico Theatre Project’s “Time Is On Our Side runs June 3 to 26, and R. Eric Thomas, programming director at the William Way LGBT Community Center and the play’s author, absolutely loves South Philly. “I’ve never lived anywhere else in Philly. Philadelphia is so many cities but one of the most vibrant cities that Philly has is South Philly, Thomas, a resident of the 1800 block of South Broad Street, said. He’s also lived at Broad Street and Snyder Avenue, the intersection of 16th and Ritner and South Bancroft streets, and now, at Broad and Moore. In fact, the 2400 block of South Bancroft Street is the home where the play’s protagonist, Annie, lives – a house she’s inherited by her grandmother. “I feel really proud when I say I’ve lived in South Philly for 10 years. I’ve seen the neighborhoods change, and I feel a real sense of ownership and responsibility,

urprising others can certainly prove an enticing endeavor, but what about the satisfaction that comes from astonishing oneself? Having primarily decided to audition for “The Plough and the Starsâ€? to acquire more practice for the furthering of his professional journey, Harry Watermeier found himself cast as Jack Clitheroe, the protagonist in playwright SeĂĄn O’Casey’s account of Ireland’s Easter Rising. “My wheelhouse is the sensitive, somewhat nervous type, so this is far different,â€? the 29-year-old resident of the 1100 block of Tasker Street said from Plays & Players Theatre, which is staging the work through June 11 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the six-daylong insurrection to establish an Irish Republic free of British rule. “He’s definitely one of the more mascu-

line characters I have played, and that comes with challenges, especially since he does some things that I just don’t like. The Passyunk Square denizen is handling the role through the Irish Heritage Theatre, which has also staged “The Shadow of a Gunman and “Juno and the Paycock, the other elements of O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy. Not incredibly familiar with the work before his audition, Watermeier, with all due respect to the historic richness, feels that regardless of the covered content, the piece, and any other stage-based effort, should aim for emotional integrity, which counts as the crux of his involvement. “Jack has considerable import to the action though he has limited stage time, he said of the bricklayer and former Irish Citizen Army member who leaps at the chance to challenge England’s stronghold over the Emerald Isle. “What’s key for me is not to be too self-aware. I have to know what to communicate to my scene partner to give a wholly spontaneous yet elegantly prepared explanation of the text. With major investment in evoking the turmoil felt within Clitheroe and the conflict’s effects on the other characters, Watermeier stated he is “running with faster runners, meaning he must mind his portrayal as another component of his maturation. “There are successes and failures in this field, like with

To the Editor: Well done, South Philly. While the Italian Festival has evolved with the rest of the everchanging world, today it was like having a piece of the 1980s back. Growing up an Italian, in South Philly, you looked forward to the festival every year. You could flaunt who you were, where you came from. You easily knew that George’s Roast Pork was the best and that DiBruno’s Abbruzze cheese was amazing and you understood why the line for an Isgro’s cannoli was about two blocks long. However, as a kid in the ’80s, I considered the greased pole the highlight. It was so much fun to watch all the men break each other’s stones about how they would be the ones to get up there. What was more exciting than envelopes stuffed with money, a giant wedge of sharp provolone cheese, or a hunk of prosciutto?! I’ll tell you what, watching the guys formulate how they were

going to get up there, watching them try and fall, laugh at themselves and try again. One year, I watched the wall of men get higher and higher just for them to send a little girl up to the very top to pull off the prizes. The excitement, the enthusiasm, and the pride were palpable. Then the pole came down, the festival itself grew, started to include the other occupants of 9th Street. The food became more diverse, the bands got bigger. It was still home, still a good time, and, when I moved away, still a good reason to come into the city for the weekend. Hearing the pole was returning this year was so exciting. I started to see people post old photos of their or their father’s attempts. Stories were shared of days long gone by, and for the first time in a while, everyone I knew was making sure they would be there. The powers that be finally found the right elements to allow the

pole’s return. Safety, insurance, waivers and a breathalyzer were all included, as well as an age limit. The smack talking was immediate....with just one change....now it was my friends doing the talking. The video of the pole being put in was just as enthralling as “Game of Thrones. Saturday morning dawned just as wet and rainy as it’s been for weeks, yet friends were already stalking the area and posting pictures. It seemed Sunday was the best shot at not getting drenched and couldn’t get here fast enough. Finally, the day arrived, with more rain, thankfully not a lot. My husband and I drove in from Delco, picked up my mom and headed over. Once near Reed Street, I could begin to hear the music, the million voices, and the children’s laughter. I have been to this festival almost every year of my life, and I don’t think I had ever seen it so packed. I don’t know if it was the break in the weather, the prospect of amazing food, or the call of the legendary greased pole that called people out in the thousands. Music blared out of giant speakers, merchants haggled with customers over shirts, maps, posters, hats, and key-chains sporting Italian colors. You could buy candles or start up a consultation for new windows. Get an ice cold bottle of Peroni or a pineapple filled with alcohol drenched fruit. Yes the festival had grown, and it was wonderful to be home. It took about 20 minutes to go four blocks. Another 25 minutes in line for that delicious, “cholesterol can go to the devil roast pork sandwich. And then the last stretch to the main event, the greased pole. Mayor Rizzo looked down on us all, and it was packed. From my first position way back, I could see a man, who had clearly done this as a teen the last time the pole was up, try to shimmy his way to the top. The crowd called out encouragement or advice. This wouldn’t do, I had to get closer. I knew I had friends in the fray of men attempting the beast. Now I’m not 100 percent sure, and correct me if I’m wrong. The pole itself had grown, in height and diameter. It was a monster covered in lard. Blessing my small frame and lack of height, I maneuvered myself closer. About three rows of bodies behind, “I think parents should pay more attention, first of all. I’m not entirely sure that officials should have reacted the way they did, but they made what they thought was a safe decision. Toni Irving, West Philadelphia

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m I could clearly see my friends. They looked exhausted and greasy, but determined. I asked a few people to let me through just to say hello and got the slickest hug and kiss in my life. Fellow spectators were kind enough to let me stand in the very front. Higher and higher they climbed each time. There was a hazard to the front row, as each time the guys reached a new height, giant globs of lard came raining down on those below. For the most part, I was successful at avoiding it; bare misses were common. My jacket got splatter on it, but that is a small price to pay for heritage. As an adult, you see things way differently. When you are young, your eyes are on the top guy, seeing if he can make it, see how far he has to go. As an adult you see the guys on the bottom, or base, holding it all up. You see their strength and determination. You watch them shake, get stepped on, kicked, have their heads used as platforms. You notice how their arms are locked, how other men look for weak spots and add their power to the fold. They don’t notice the dirty feet of the guy they just boosted up, they don’t care about the ripped back pockets someone used as a toe hold, and shirts are literally taken off their owners’ backs to be used to wipe grease away without a thought. And they aren’t all just Italian either, despite the name of the festival; there are also Irish, Africans, Asians, Latinos, all working together for a common goal. All men, and their blood, sweat and strength. It’s certainly something to behold, more so when your friends are there and at it for hours, continually trying their hardest, putting their heads together to create a new plan with a laugh and smile. They never did make it to the top, nobody reaching the deliciousness of food and wealth of money. Yet something else occurred that day. Many people felt for the first time in a while that camaraderie of team work, of unity, of everything that being Italian in South Philly has ever meant. For me, a mere bystander, it was everything I ever remembered and worth the occasional drizzle, insane crowds, and constant standing because it was home, and there is no place like home. 3ZWaVO EOaVYZ]dWbQV 2SZOeO`S 1]c\bg Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

n May 25, the Philadelphia Police Department announced the arrest of Tyrell Winchester, of the 2000 block of South 20th Street, having sought the 28-year-old for a Chester County-based incident. Six days before his detainment, Winchester supposedly tried to run over a police officer who had attempted to stop him once noticing that he might have been driving a stolen silver 2000 Mercury sedan. Following the reported instance of aggression, the law enforcement agent followed the local figure down West Chester Pike, with Winchester allegedly stopping his vehicle on the side of the road and fleeing on foot through a nearly field. Authorities retrieved a dropped backpack and found a Social Security card inside, using that information to involve the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. That entity and the Philadelphia Police Department combined to arrest Winchester on the aforementioned date at 19th and Market streets. He ended up remanded to Chester County Prison in lieu of $300,000 bail, with authorities charging him with attempted murder in the first degree, aggravated and simple assault, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.

First reported in the May 26 South Philly Review as “Tails of misfortune, at 2:43 a.m. May 22, police responded to a call from E. Frank Hopkins Seafood, 3120 S. Third St., and learned that a store employee checked the dock and noticed a lock missing from one of the storage trailers. Video surveillance captured the images of approximately six black males of various statures and ages unloading boxes of snow crabs and lobster tails valued at $52,000, with the figures loading the goods into an unknown SUV. ers have won my favor since I heard “Up on the Roof and “On Broadway for the first time just shy of adolescence. “Under the Boardwalk rounds out their trio of cherished titles consisting of prepositional phrases, and the 1964 gem schools me in the brilliance of forgetting one’s cares and pursuing happiness, limitations, be damned. 4) “Seven Nation Army: I am accustomed to hearing this one at sporting events, particularly Catholic League basketball title games at The Palestra (Thank you to the squads at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School for ALWAYS advancing to championship night!), and although it is not a summer tune, this White Stripes masterpiece has such a relentless guitar riff that I am hoping someone has the good sense to give us all a treat or two. 3) “The Boys of Summer: While The Eagles were a phenomenal group (“Hotel California was almost a member of this list), I have always preferred the solo output of Don Henley to his discography with the band. Try to avoid releasing a tear or two when listening to “The Heart of the Matter or to keep from emulating the “she in “All She Wants To Do Is Dance, for example; however, “The Boys of Summer, from 1984’s “Building the Perfect Beast, has to be his signature tune, with the initial note setting us up for a nearly five-minute examination of love and loss. 2) “Don’t Stop Believin’: Immensely fun to play on piano, this 35-year-old masterpiece from Journey could be the anthem for every day of the year. During the summer, I think it sounds particularly apt, as in some way, shape, or form, “Everybody wants a thrill when days grow longer and dream burn more brightly. 1) “Here Comes the Sun: My absolute favorite song, this 1969 masterpiece by The Beatles first grabbed my attention when the 16-year-old version of me watched a PBS show for my junior year physics class at St. John Neumann High School. Twenty-one years later, I know that nothing will ever eclipse this tune’s message of hope, happiness, and appreciation. The 15 to 20 seconds just before George Harrison sings the final verse are gorgeous and make me feel so fortunate to be alive, which I consider a must-have component if a piece of art wishes to endure. >@723 continued from page 1 Thomas explained, noting that longevity means something to South Philly. He gets a notion of “Oh, you get what’s happening here and you’re not just some interloper from his long-held addresses. “The play is this conservation between generations of the gay rights movement, and I think there are a lot of different ways to be proud. This play is steeped in Philadelphia history but also steeped in South Philly neighborhood behavior, he disclosed, acknowledging the neighbor lady who’s always leaning out of the house or the houses that have 16 coats of paint on their walls. “South Philly can be very queer-friendly and affirming, but it isn’t always visible, the Baltimore native, comedic writer, event host, and storyteller said. “Time Is On Our Side is “exploring the idea that queer people have been around South Philly for decades. The show’s premise is “The Schuylkill River Project, a local history podcast that Annie and her best friend, Curtis, host. They’re queer and in exploring Annie’s Bancroft Street house, she finds a secret diary her grandmother kept – what she finds out about a woman whom she loved deeply may be disorienting, even disappointing that it was a well-kept secret. The play’s press release says what ensues is “a gleeful mystery that celebrates the intersection of our city’s past, present and future. It’s timely, too, because LGBT Pride celebrations are around the corner with the parade and festival taking place next weekend. Pride is a curious notion in it of itself, and Thomas has an interesting perspective on how he thinks Pride should feel. “For me, it’s this big unifying event. In an ideal world, pride parades and festivals feel

like the great coming together of all of our streams and everyone is affirmed and lifted up, he analogized. “Because it’s a free-flow of ideas, nobody is shut out because of any difference; that’s what pride looks like to me in my heart. BOB SKIBA, A curator at William Way and archives guru, remembers when post-WWII South Philly was decidedly territorial (not unlike “West Side Story, he mused). “You could be 20 blocks from Center City, but it was a whole other world, said Skiba. “Being gay or queer in that kind of atmosphere could be a double-edge sword – it’s difficult because no one will talk about it but on the flipside, you become their queer so no one else can mess with you. They watched out for you because you were theirs, and I think the same kind of thing happened in South Philly. He’s met countless gay men and women who’ve only ever wanted to be “accepted and respected, not unlike what many South Philly immigrants hoped for, but many who don’t come out until their 40s, 50s or 60s for fear of intergenerational rejection. “They have to remove themselves from enclaves to come out, even if it’s going from South Philly to Center City – it’s a different world. Or they stay home in a tight community and say ‘It’s not time to come out,’ Skiba said. Pride was born in the late 1960s and early ’70s as a direct response to the overwhelming notion that psychologists, politicians, religious leaders, and legislators cast on homosexuality – shame. He cited Barbara Gittings, a legendarily bold and brave Philadelphia lesbian, who stood up against accusations of sickness in the ’50s and onwards as a hero. “People who have the courage to stand up in the face of people saying ‘You’re sick’ or ‘You’re going to hell and you’re a criminal’

and saying ‘No, I’m perfectly fine’ inspire Skiba. In one scene of Thomas’s play, Curtis finds a note from ’76 in Annie’s grandmother’s diary that reads: “A community meeting in the 2nd District was disrupted by two homosexual rights activists last night. Bea Freemont, of Pennsport, and Charles Canning, of Queen Village, protested arrests, beatings and harassment of gay men in the 2nd District by the police department. Rittenhouse Square and the park at 26th and Pine, dubbed Judy Garland Park, were prime destinations for queer South Philadelphians to meet each other. ties, and drag shows, too. Money talks, as they say. When Pride’s longtime producer, Franny Price, moved to South Philly and her neighbor asked her if she was a lesbian and she said ‘yes,’ the famous response she got was “good, you’ll keep the neighborhood clean. Then she was asked if she knew the lesbian at 10th and Shunk streets. A Passyunk Square dweller is enhancing his estimation of his theatrical chops through a lauded Irish play. NÊBy Joseph Myers REVIEW EDITOR

urprising others can certainly prove an enticing endeavor, but what about the satisfaction that comes from astonishing oneself? Having primarily decided to audition for “The Plough and the Stars” to acquire more practice for the furthering of his professional journey, Harry Watermeier found himself cast as Jack Clitheroe, the protagonist in playwright Seán O’Casey’s account of Ireland’s Easter Rising. “My wheelhouse is the sensitive, somewhat nervous type, so this is far different,” the 29-year-old resident of the 1100 block of Tasker Street said from Plays & Players Theatre, which is staging the work through June 11 in conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the six-daylong insurrection to establish an Irish Republic free of British rule. “He’s definitely one of the more mascu-

line characters I have played, and that comes with challenges, especially since he does some things that I just don’t like.” The Passyunk Square denizen is handling the role through the Irish Heritage Theatre, which has also staged “The Shadow of a Gunman” and “Juno and the Paycock,” the other elements of O’Casey’s Dublin Trilogy. Not incredibly familiar with the work before his audition, Watermeier, with all due respect to the historic richness, feels that regardless of the covered content, the piece, and any other stage-based effort, should aim for emotional integrity, which counts as the crux of his involvement. “Jack has considerable import to the action though he has limited stage time,” he said of the bricklayer and former Irish Citizen Army member who leaps at the chance to challenge England’s stronghold over the Emerald Isle. “What’s key for me is not to be too self-aware. I have to know what to communicate to my scene partner to give a wholly spontaneous yet elegantly prepared explanation of the text.” With major investment in evoking the turmoil felt within Clitheroe and the conflict’s effects on the other characters, Watermeier stated he is “running with faster runners,” meaning he must mind his portrayal as another component of his maturation. “There are successes and failures in this field, like with

any other, the thespian said of valuing theater’s contributions to developing and retaining perspective. “As I said, I realize I need to audition more to have a better comprehension of my place in this vocation, and having this responsibility, where the history is secondary to the humanity for me, I feel I’m on the precipice of really improving. I might be right on the edge of getting better. This run will definitely give me some priceless lessons. ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE HAS always registered as a passion for the Indianapolis product. With social immersion at its highest through his participation in theater, Watermeier made that his major at Indiana University, with film studies as his minor. “I find that I light up when theater is the topic, the performer said of the discipline. “It’s highly transformational to see yourself as one person in what I hope will be an endless line of people who are looking to strengthen lives through powerful stories. Following his Midwest formation, Watermeier ventured to Philadelphia to join

the Arden Theater Co.’s Professional Apprenticeship program. Exposure to the Old City-situated venue’s intense attention to producing riveting works and additional exploration of the city as a whole made making Philadelphia his enduring abode an easy selection. “You want to stick around because there’s just so much life here, especially where I am, Watermeier said of his block’s proximity to the ever-bustling East Passyunk Avenue restaurant scene and his expanse’s “great cluster of folks. “I’ve been in South Philly for a little more than a year, and there’s definitely an admirable feel to what’s occurring there. The blunt identity that our environs possess definitely appeals to the actor thanks, in part, to the influence that junior year collegiate studies of realism, including the works of Anton Chekhov and Henrik Ibsen, bred. Armed with that affinity for integrity and possessing tireless curiosity, he set out to hit his mark as a hire and an educator, deeply aware of his need to nurture practicality no matter the task. “There have had to be some modifications of my goals, Watermeier noted.

“No matter any setback, though, it’s still all about communication and the preservation of this art form.â€? His burgeoning resumĂŠ includes teaching duties for the Arden, Lantern Theater Co., and St. Peter’s School, a comedic turn for Philly Improv Theatre, and acting opportunities through the SoLow and FringeArts festivals, with “Dear Diary, Byeâ€? by former Point Breeze resident Ellie Brown accounting for the former and “Fando y Lis,â€? staged at The Shubin Theater, 407 Bainbridge St., the latter; Simpatico Theatre Project; Tiny Dynamite; and Lantern, with his role as Ray Gosling in last year’s “Photograph 51â€? marking the first time he feels he sat at “the adults’ table.â€? “I think it’s great to examine how influenced and influential we can be,â€? Watermeier said, noting how his adoration of films helps him to become an even better student of human exchanges and aspirations. “Especially here in Philadelphia, which I’d say is a great place for people with an interest in producing their own work, your opportunities to give and receive insights are never-ending.â€? ’m a big klutz. Just ask the guy on the Chestnut Street bus whom I accidentally whacked in the head with a large baguette (it was 100 percent whole wheat, but that didn’t seem to impress him). Uncle Nunzi says that’s what I get for buying bread not made in South Philly. Somehow, I don’t think the victim would’ve been any happier if I had hit him with a loaf of Italian bread. Uncle firmly believes my buying a baguette is a sign of poor upbringing. He thinks the word “baguette is pretentious. Our mayor is anything but pretentious, and sometimes it gets him into trouble with a local media that once doted on Frank Rizzo and is intent on making up for it by hyper-criticizing every mayor’s office occupant since. I understand there is no honeymoon period when one becomes mayor of a big city. The urgent problems that face Philadelphia, while no worse and sometimes better than those of other American cities, does not permit grace periods. Negativity is our mother’s milk; cynicism, our religion. There is cause for skepticism. All one has to do is look at the obstacles we have yet to overcome in developing our waterfront area that is still awaiting the kind of development that took place years ago in Boston, Baltimore, Savannah, and San Antonio. But some of the barbs slung at Jim Kenney began right after he made his inauguration speech. His rhetoric doesn’t soar, but charging him with a lack of vision doesn’t square with Kenney’s determination to implement universal pre-K to improve Philadelphia students’ performance. Uncle claims I am blind when it comes to criticizing Kenney. Columnist’s note: My wife worked the phones one day during the Kenney campaign. When he was a councilman, Kenney graciously sent over a couple of drinks to us in the Palm Lounge, and we reciprocated. My South Philly Review column “The Passion of Jim Kenney made it into a couple of his campaign ads. Yes, I like him. I like that he has the combination of the street smarts he learned growing up in South Philly and respect him for his good heart that leads him most often in the right direction when it comes to his politics. I criticized the regressive nature of the sugary beverage tax Kenney has proposed to fund universal pre-K, but at the same time I asked if there is a better way. So far, I have heard a great deal of criticism, but I haven’t seen a better plan. The proposal to tax containers instead of targeting sugar-sweetened beverages

At least taxing soda gives the poor the option to cut down or eliminate the sugary drinks from their diet with the health benefits that accrue from that decision. The poor can’t escape a tax on containers. The proposal to increase real estate taxes to fund pre-K is a non-starter. The City is still in a muddle trying to implement its plan to tax property based on market value. Why then would you turn around and add to that mess by increasing property taxes? It didn’t help when Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders railed against the tax, though he lauded the goal. Sanders proposed a graduated tax not knowing that Philadelphia doesn’t have the authority to implement such an assessment. After committing for years to a slight annual cut in the City’s wage tax, it doesn’t seem smart to turn around and increase that tax. There is little controversy that universal pre-K is desirable in Philadelphia, although implementing the full program in one year might not be preferable to phasing it in. Meanwhile, the soda industry is spending big bucks running scare ads against what it misleadingly calls the “grocery tax. We’re not talking about the necessities of life here, folks. We’re talking about using a little less sugar in our diet. Uncle says the tax will fall heavily on Cumpare Carmen, who likes to mix cream soda with store bought red wine. Not that Uncle is critical because he believes there ought to be a tax on poor taste. Kenney has been less certain in his stance on “stop and frisk. He campaigned against the practice because it unfairly targets minority communities. However, he has since caught flak for wavering on eliminating the police practice altogether. He believes that if implemented correctly, “stop and frisk does not have to be onerous. It’s a difficult position to sell, even if Kenney is correct, and I think nothing can salvage “stop and frisk as a prudent police tactic. The new mayor has admirably tried to lessen controversial police contact with the minority community by downgrading nuisance crimes. Eliminating “stop and frisk would go a long way toward achieving that goal. On Police Commissioner Richard Ross’ decision to forego requiring police applicants to have college credits, I believe a better move might be involving our community colleges in fulfilling that role less expensively. Instead of fostering dialogue and proposing solutions, some of the media is focused on whether Kenney is “cool or whether he should have invited The Roots back to head the July 4th concert. In the meantime, Uncle thinks Kenney should ban me from riding a crowded bus when I’m carrying a baguette even if it is 100 percent whole wheat. He thinks I should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon. SPR Commentatsouthphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

Carmen Craig-Williams Public School Educator Southwest Philadelphia I’ve been teaching for 24 years. As an educator, I want to believe this tax would mean more money for the classroom. But I can’t really say where the money is going to go. We pay enough in taxes already. I should be worried about whether or not my students know their times tables tomorrow, not a grocery tax.

his time of year yields many benefits, including the growth of delicious vegetables. With her parsley among the beneficiaries of the calendar, Francesca de la Torre simply removes the plant from her garden and makes it a component of her Summer Italian Pasta Salad. The inhabitant of the 2600 block of Dudley Street loves to use this creation as an entrée and noted the vegetarian version would make a great addition to picnics. We are bound to have some rainy days come the summer, but when the sun sets its heart on loving us, our Grays Ferry-based submitter’s generosity will leave everyone beaming. SPR

ummers spent at the Jersey Shore are among my fondest childhood memories. Our house on Hillside Avenue in Ventnor was a few steps from the bay. For my mother, it was no vacation. She cooked, cleaned, did laundry, and shopped. She also cleaned and scaled the fish my father and I brought home. I enjoyed helping her with this chore and packing sandwiches, fruit, and iced tea for a day at the beach. When my father arrived for the weekend, we planned dinners at many restaurants. The Knife & Fork Inn was a favorite. The restaurant was built in 1912. Its website proclaims “from the Roaring ’20s to the 21st century. I imagine there was a speakeasy-type private door during Prohibition. We dined at The Knife & Fork Inn for my birthday a few weeks ago. Since shore season is here, I wanted to share our meal with you. The two-story building has a bar downstairs and several dining rooms upstairs. There is natural wood throughout the room. It is almost as if time has stood still here. No modern light, tables, and chairs. I sat at a comfortable banquette. Tables are covered with white linen with napkins. Cocktails were expertly mixed by the woman in charge of the bar. Our server brought dry corporate-type rolls with soft butter. The menu has a ’90s look, and there is nothing wrong with it. There are no strange concoctions with a myriad of ingredients. Tuna tar tar ($12) was a cool way to begin dinner. Sushi-quality deep red tuna was handchopped, beautifully seasoned, and topped with a glistening bit of olive oil. It came with a mound of chopped red ripe tomatoes and sweet red onion. I especially enjoyed the waffle potato chips that accompanied this starter. Unfortunately, the Caesar salad ($7) was limp because of the use of too many outer leaves. The dressing was thin and tasteless even though we asked for anchovies. I doubt a coddled egg went toward the proper emulsifying of the dressing. Very little Parmesan topped the salad. Rack of lamb ($37) was perfectly prepared. Six meaty Frenched chops were rubbed with a bit of mustard and minced fresh herbs, a classic preparation for lamb. The chops arrived medium rare and included a mound of creamy whipped potatoes laced with rosemary and sage. A pool of bordelaise sauce, prepared with sweet Vidalia onions, hit the mark. Everything on the plate was

there for a reason. A dry aged bone-in 18-ounce cowboy steak ($45) was not as successful as the lamb. It lacked seasoning and was a little over-cooked. Still, the beef was tender and a sprinkling of salt and pepper made it better. Do not miss, I repeat, do not miss an order of pommes soufflĂŠ ($6). I first tasted this classic French potato preparation 25 years ago at Tio Pepe, a Spanish restaurant in Baltimore. Pommes soufflĂŠ are long, thin strips of russet potatoes that are twice fried in very hot oil. During the second frying, they magically puff up and are hollow inside. The Knife & Fork Inn is only the second restaurant I have visited that serves these crispy, luscious, slightly salted treats. A nice touch would be offering a small serving instead of the tasteless bread. A side of pencil thin asparagus with a limp thin BĂŠarnaise was cold. Another version appeared but the sauce was still not rich. We asked the sommelier to recommend a wine. He brought three bottles under $50. He told us the Sangiovese ($35) was a favorite and if we did not like it, he would drink it. A Sangiovese can be a bit rough. This was perfection in a bottle. I loved the smooth, rich flavor that was filled with fruit. And, the price was right. Key lime pie with coconut ice cream ($8) was just OK. The graham cracker crust was dry and the ice cream lacked richness. Service was excellent. Both dining rooms were fully booked. A gentleman at the next table was also celebrating his birthday. We toasted, of course. The Knife & Fork Inn has a Happy Hour, is open for dinner seven nights, and serves lunch on Friday. Reservations are an absolute must. Three tips of the toque to The Knife and Fork Inn. SPR

ne can often wonder how truly occupied individuals are when they delay or dissolve their commitments by uttering “I’m busy.â€? When those words come from the mouth of Jaime Tapia, they register not as an indication of escapism but rather as an affirmation of enthusiasm. Having left Mexico as a teenager to seek opportunity and stability, the 39-year-old has become an amigo to many South Philadelphians as the owner of Pancho Villa, 1800 S. Fourth St., and Tres JalapeĂąos, 901 S. Eighth St. “I definitely appreciate the love that people have for what we do,â€? the resident of the 2900 block of Wharton Street said from the latter establishment. “That causes us to be thankful and makes us very interested in giving them our best every time.â€? The Grays Ferry dweller has overseen the Bella Vista haunt since 2010, continuing a calling that has included South Street employment. Open daily from 10 a.m. to midnight, the location offers authentic and Tex-Mex cuisine, with Tapia, who initially desired to be a musician, quick to sing the praises of his personnel. “Our food is really fresh, and that helps us to have many loyal customers,â€? the proprietor said of the ever-popular constituent of the thriving Mexican scene that entices guests to the 9th Street Italian Market and its surroundings. “Especially on Cinco de Mayo, we did many deliveries because people trust that we are proud of our food.â€? If eager chewers choose to venture inside rather than to welcome a delivery person, they will find the 60-seat space incredibly inviting, with Tapia the central provider of pleasantries. Certain not to break the bank or anyone’s promise to go for nutrient-rich options, the El Azteca, whose taco components come with the choice of chicken, ground beef, or pork, not only heads the platters portion but also gives Tapia the increasing feeling that Tres JalapeĂąos will continue to be a commended community entity. “I have had some rough moments along the way,â€? he said. “However, I like what I have here because people are responding to my food, and not everybody can say that.â€?

I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones.
