livanne “Anne Pannone is a hero, but the South Philly resident doesn’t need a lasso of truth or shield like Wonder Woman. Her strength is helping others as a home health aid. Pannone has been described as always “going the extra mile for her patients. Whether it’s through carrying labels in her bag for when she cleans out patient’s refrigerators and cabinets or by constantly checking smoke alarms, frayed rugs and sharp objects around her clients’ homes, she is always willing to help in whatever way possible. Her efforts have not gone unnoticed. Since 1999, BAYADA Home Health Care has been recognizing compassionate, excellent and reliable home healthcare professionals with its Hero of the Year Program. When the winners were announced, Pannone made the list as a result of her proactive approach in caregiving. She was presented the award at the company’s annual meeting at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. “To have been nominated for the [BAYADA] award is such a wonderful gift because I feel like I am able to represent and advocate for every single home health aid, not just in Philly, but around the

Holmes said. “I wanted them to know that in a world where ‘No child left behind’ is stressed, that they were in fact special and that they need to keep going steadfast in their education.â€? In his own experience after graduating Stanton, Holmes admitted that the road to high school graduation became even tougher, with violence in schools and on the streets. However, because his mother had always emphasized the importance of education, seeing as she grew up in the 1920’s in South Carolina where education typically maxed out at eighth grade, Holmes was determined to graduate and ultimately succeed. “I had to repeat 10th grade because I had taken some side tracks in my education,â€? Holmes said. “I wanted to reach out

A

to these kids 50 years later to encourage them not to get sidetracked like me, and to stay focused on school and graduate. Despite having taken longer than he would have liked to graduate high school, Holmes eventually went on to pursue an undergraduate degree in finance, and ended up working in accounting for 25 years. He hopes that by sharing his story and encouraging Duncan and Wood to continue their strong educational careers, they may be able to complete their education and fulfill their dreams faster than he was able to do. “These kids are really sharp, and Stanton is a great school, Holmes said. “They needed to know how exceptional they are. Schools want all children to see themselves as equals, but when they eventually enter the real world they find out it doesn’t work that way. To help set Duncan and Wood up for future success, in addition to providing them with trophies, Holmes gave each a $100 scholarship, which was provided through donations by Century 21 and Conexus Technologies, Inc. “When I gave out the awards everyone started clapping. When you start to get to my age, it feels like there comes an end to certain journeys, and this may have been the end of my journey with Stanton, Holmes, 61, said, “For some reason I still keep my marble trophy from E.M. Stanton in 1976, and I hope these kids will too. SPR

KIRKBRIDE continued from page 1 families, cultures and roots,” Principal Rebecca Julien said. Helping to make this project possible, COSACOSA, an organization that has dedicated its efforts to creating new public art specific to the concerns of Philadelphia neighborhoods since 1990, partnered with the school to guide the students through their artistic examination of the American Dream. In doing so, three COSACOSA teaching artists and six art assistants, along with three Kirkbride lead teachers and Julian encouraged this examination of the concept through original essays, poetry, interviews and visual art. “The American Dream means happiness and success to me,” Samiyah Brown, an eighth-grade student, said. “Through this project I learned about lots of other people’s American Dreams and that not everyone has the same American Dream. I think this is a good thing because not everyone should have to follow the same dream because it’s a free country.”

THE POSSIBILITY FOR this partnership came about after the Friends of Kirkbride shared news regarding the potential acquisition of a grant from the Public Citizens for Children and Youth, a Philadelphia-based organization that advocates to ensure optimal health care, education, and familycentered resources for children and youth with disabilities. “I think this is a very beautiful project and it’s been a pleasure to watch it develop from the beginning, which was just the conversation from what will this project look like all the way to the art making sessions,“ Tim Gibbons, director of the Picasso Project, a part of the Public Citizens for Children and Youth which awards grants of up to $5,000 to schools annually to support projects in creative, performing and digital arts, said. “Something that I think is so special about this is that it’s a great representation of the power of our education, which is so critical in our Philadelphia public schools.” The 52 participating students were all able to connect and explore similarities between their family immigration stories, as well as the cultural traditions which their

families and neighborhoods participate in. Through this conversation and collaboration, students found inspiration which they then channeled into art to create a 60-foot mural in a school hallway. “This project gave me more hopes, and helped me to become more creative,” Diego Zacarias, another eighth-grade student, said. “There are numerous dreams that I’ve never thought about, but that are still really good dreams.” Incorporated in this mural are miniature American Dream-related ceramic sculptures that represent a multitude of the students’ hopes and dreams. Radiating from outstretched human hands, they depict the needs and hopes that “transcend boundaries of culture and community.” Along with the project’s participants and instructors, Mayor Jim Kenney was in attendance at the mural’s unveiling. Addressing the students, he explained how no groups of people are decendents of immigrants chose to make the transition to life in America. Thus, in his opinion almost everyone is an decendant and has a place in the “sanctuary city” that is Philadelphia. “We all have the privilege of being in

This country exists because that statue in the harbor of New York means what it says; ‘Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.’” In closing his remarks, Kenney pointed out the diversity that exists within Kirkbride in particular, calling it “beautiful” and noting that much of the news regarding immigrants that is coming out of Washington lately, especially from the president, is “disgraceful.” As mayor, he said he is committed to keeping immigrants in Philadelphia safe, and will do everything in his power to ensure their rights, leading them to fulfilling their “American Dreams.” “Continue doing the good work that you’re doing, and continue moving on in your life,” Kenney told the students. “You’re going to go to high school next year, then you’re going to go to college if you choose, or you’re going to find a career and you’re going to be great Americans.” SPR

First call An early morning bar tour from Northeast Philly to South Philly ■ By Max Marin S o u t h P h i l ly R e v i e w

T

here’s no line outside of McKenna’s Bar at 6:52 a.m. Less than a minute after the doors open, the first regular lumbers in — a 71-one-year old named Phil with a handlebar mustache and a slight hearing deficit. Without inquiry, Denise Jovovich, one of the Mayfair bar’s morning bartenders, pours him a glass of cheap beer. News is the room’s only soundtrack: jurors deadlocked in the Bill Cosby trial. Phil watches and sips his drink with a look of satisfaction and inner peace. Everyone knows the evening bar scene. But at 7 a.m. nearly every day of the week, at least 30 bars across the Philadelphia open their doors and start pouring drinks to a diverse cross-section of the city, from shaky-handed alcoholics to overnight workers, from coffee drinkers to bereaved funeral goers. I visited seven early-hours bars between first call and noon, had a drink (or two) at each, and I’m here to tell you how very emotional I am feeling at the moment. Sorry — just sorting through these barstool notes for the first time. What sober me is here to tell you is that going to neighborhood bars in the rosy hours after dawn is every bit a fascinating way to see a city as in the evening. At McKenna’s, where mugs of Pabst Blue Ribbon are famously 80 cents a pop, it begins with the retired crowd. Phil will soon be joined by a 90-yearold neighborhood man named Billy, who walks to McKenna’s from his house every morning, drinks four or five small snifters of Pabst, and does pushups and situps on the barroom floor. It’s an overwhelmingly male-dominated scene — and not just at this Frankford Avenue waterhole — hang around and you’ll assuredly catch the group of elderly women who still come in through the bar’s antiquated LADIES entrance in the back. By mid-morning, Jovovich says they’ll have at least six drinkers stretching down the narrow barroom with no place they’d rather be. “People hang out all day,” Jovovich says, who works from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. three days a week. “Sometimes I’ll say ‘Hey! You did

my whole shift with me!” MOST BARS WOULD lose money by opening this early. But in working class areas from the Northeast to South Philly, early morning bars are part of the neighborhood fabric. Less than half a mile from McKenna’s is the Taproom, a corner joint on a sleepy residential block. According to longtime bartender “Kathy,” who requested withholding her full name, mornings are decent business. It gets more competitive once the bar-saturated Frankford Avenue corridor opens up full force in the afternoon. “Some people come in to watch the morning news,” Kathy says. “Certain people come in just to play the games. Some people just come in to listen to the jukebox first thing in the morning.” The retired class is joined by the gainfully employed. In Mayfair, bartenders say midnight shift SEPTA operators, firefighters and State Road corrections officers are mainstays of the morning bar crowd. Two blocks away at Sheffield Tavern, a worker snoozes after a shift in the smoker’s outpost. The bar’s empty at the moment, but morning barkeep Ashley Lang notes she already had two graveyard shifters who came in for a night cap. And it changes day by day, hour by hour. “Once people have found their neighborhood spot, they stick with it,” she says. I down a beer and move to the next spot. If I wanted to, I could walk to Ralph’s Bleigh Street Bar just down the street. Mayfairians are lucky to have so many options. There were 1,442 restaurant liquor licenses in Philly as of 2016, according to the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. For the last several decades, state liquor law

has allowed any business with a restaurant liquor license — which covers everything from lavish steakhouses to neighborhood dive bars — to start serving booze at 7 a.m. Monday through Saturday, and as early as 9 a.m. on Sundays. At Philadelphia International Airport for an early international flight? The good law granteth you booze as early as 5 a.m. But in Center City and University City, despite the concentration of 24-7 business facilities, there are fewer first call options than there are in this half-mile stretch of the Northeast. Work overnight in University City? Spread bagelry isn’t your everyday bar, but I’ll mention it because it’s one of the few spots that serves booze at 7 a.m. And over on the east side of Broad Street, Milkboy is one of the few — or maybe the only bar — open to third-shift Jefferson Hospital staffers looking to unwind as the rest of the city rolls out of bed. Five years ago, I spent a summer working the overnight shift at a now-shuttered diner. Us third shifters would hand off the aprons to the morning crew around 7 a.m., feeling equal parts weary and wired. Happy hour called, but who’s open? I frequented quite a number of morning bars in the River Wards, as well as some the famed South Philly haunts like Ray’s Happy Birthday Bar, 1200 E. Passyunk Ave., — a place that some joke never closes. But put Ray’s aside for a moment. South Philly still has, bar none, the city’s most prodigious morning selection. At Fireside Tavern on Oregon Avenue near 6th Street, five people chat around a circular bar beneath signs with catty messages like TIPPING IS NOT A TOWN IN CHINA and IF YOU’RE DRINKING TO FORGET, PLEASE PAY IN ADVANCE. Shortly after I sit down, a man who is feeling very good and whose name I can’t quite understand forcefully gifts me with damn near an entire box of Tastykake Jelly Krimpets. Is the morning crowd more generous than the evening crowd? It’s only 9:30 a.m. — still too early to tell. Another patron is a young-looking retired postal worker who lives in Jersey. He found Fireside on his commute home from the city for so many years. Now, he still comes back in the morning one or two days a week to hang with the manager, Tommy.

He reads the reads the paper. He smokes cigarettes in the A/C and he’s smiling the whole time. Why go out of his way for this? “Philly folks, there’s nothing like them,” he says. “Jersey people are kind of uptight.” The more time — and drinks — in South Philly, the more I hear stories that defy easily identifiable types of morning drinkers. It’s a quick Lyft ride north to Michael’s Place at 11th and Mifflin streets. Nicky Chrysler, a retired car salesman turned bartender, highlights one of the stranger morning routines at his bar: a crowd of 15 or 20 people dressed in all black walk into the bar early in the morning and order a round of shots. It happens maybe once or twice a month. They’re going to or coming from a funeral at one of the area’s churches. A bit further north, Bonnie’s Capistrano Bar, 1503 S. 13th St., just started opening its doors at 7 a.m. a few years back. The bartender, John (no last name given), has even more stories about the variety of the morning crowd he sees in South Philly. One girl regularly comes in dressed for the office. She orders a double bourbon on the rocks. Sometimes a single after that, depending on the day. “I think she doesn’t really like her job,” John says. Another guy at the bar nods knowingly. He’s been there, too. John’s going through various morning shifts that have stood out over the last few months, and he stops on the day after Donald Trump’s election in November. The gloom of that day in liberal strongholds like Philadelphia was well-reported. People called out of work, and you can guess where droves of them went. “We had almost a full bar,” John recalled. “No one was celebrating. One girl was crying.” It’s easy to romanticize drinking at this time of day for those who don’t do it regularly. The truth is that most of the conversation is as repetitive and predictable as you’ll find in at any happy hour or last call. People complain about parking and taxes. They laugh and cry and swap stories of better mornings. But the morning bar is there for those who need it, in good times and bad, although especially in bad. SPR

Knots to you

bought a braided bracelet for myself. Made of nautical cord. Navy and white. My wife’s favorite colors. Has a dangling brass anchor. Proudly proclaims “Made in the USA. My father used to tell me that “USA was a town in Japan. Said the town was named “USA just to fool us into thinking the item was Americanmade. Not sure where Dad got that story because Breitbart and Fox News didn’t exist at the time. According to the outfit that sells the bracelets — Kiel James Patrick — the bracelets are handcrafted in Providence, R.I. Maybe even by Kiel himself. As you probably surmised, the bracelets are nautical in theme. So nautical, you can smell the salt and feel the breeze whipping through your hair while standing on your yacht. I don’t own a yacht. I did once stand on the deck of a yacht, but I don’t think that counts. As I mentioned in a previous column (you do read all of them, don’t you?), I’m an old salt whose swimming pool activities revolve around three feet of water. If Kiel James Patrick knew about it, he would likely disqualify me from wearing his bracelet. Kiel really pushes his nautical theme. The bracelets come with various nautical knots. My bracelet is advertised as having a “yacht knot. Based on my limited experience with yachts, you’re probably wondering why I selected this particular bracelet. I’m not really sure. I guess I could’ve gone with the “Cape Knot Hitch or “The Nantucket Lifeguard (would that send the wrong message?) or even the one intriguingly called “Kennedy Compound (might get me invited to one of their parties). None of the bracelets bear the Trump name. Surprised me. The way the White House is tied up in knots, you’d think Kiel James Patrick could have come up with a doozy of a rope bracelet with an especially heavy brass anchor. Sticking with the nautical theme, some might say that President Trump is more albatross than anchor. This is the first White House that needs a compass to figure out the direction of their foreign policy. If President Trump were wearing one of these nautical bracelets, it would be called “The NATO Knot. Without the K. The way the Trump Administration is sinking, they ought to be handing out life vests to his appointees. I understand that when you jump in the water wearing a Trump life vest, you automatically float toward Russia. I shouldn’t make fun of my rope brace-

let because it has become my big fashion statement. I was very impressed when I opened the box and found the packing slip had been personally signed with a greeting by one of Kiel James Patrick’s employees. I must admit I was personally tied in knots trying to figure out how to wear the bracelet. The rope bracelet does not come with a clasp. There’s just a small brass anchor on a braided rope with a small knot (the yacht knot?). I tried to put the bracelet on best I could. I knotted the bracelet around my wrist the best I could without any training as a Boy Scout. The result is a clump of rope around my wrist with a small dangling brass anchor. It tends to get caught in anything I’m handling. I get the feeling that Kiel Patrick James would be horrified. The bracelet does have one big advantage — it’s a conversation piece. People ask me what it represents (besides my curious taste for knots and small brass anchors). I tell them it’s an award I received when I was 7 years old for saving a dolphin from getting caught in a fisherman’s net and being served as the main entrĂŠe that night at a local seafood restaurant. The fact that my story doesn’t have an ounce of truth in it doesn’t bother me because, as a small-time member of the media, I’m depicted as not having scruples. If I’m going to be blamed for reporting “fake news,â€? then I may as well be the beneficiary. I realize I have no more right to wear a nautical bracelet than Jared Kushner does brokering a Middle East peace settlement. At least my credentials are stamped by Kiel James Patrick and not my father-in-law. Figure it this way. I know folks who have never been near a boat who wear boat shoes. I don’t hear anyone complaining about those fakers. And let me tell you, I don’t care what anyone says, wearing boat shoes without socks might look cool, but you wind up with blisters on your feet every time. I’ll tell you a secret, I wear Peds footies with boat shoes and sneakers to avoid blisters. It’s not exactly cheating. It may be not exactly masculine, either. Wearing Peds footies is like Donald Trump claiming he has tapes of his conversation with James Comey. Peds footies can’t be seen, but they exist. Trump’s tapes can’t be heard because they don’t exist. Here I am with boat shoes on my feet and a brass anchor hanging from my wrist. Maybe I should get a jaunty captain’s cap to complete my nautical ensemble. With a little practice, maybe I can compete in the America’s Cup race. With no practice at all, in the White House, I can try to steer the Ship of State. SPR

livanne “Anne” Pannone is a hero, but the South Philly resident doesn’t need a lasso of truth or shield like Wonder Woman. Her strength is helping others as a home health aid. Pannone has been described as always “going the extra mile” for her patients.

It was unbelievable because I go about my day, not attempting to win awards, but with the mission to help and have my clients stay as totally independent for as long as possible. In establishing this impact over the past seven years at BAYADA, Pannone has kept busy in providing bathing, dressing and cleaning services to clients, as well as companionship and food preparation. According to Elizabeth Sweeney, BAYADA’s client services manager, “[Pannone] always wants to make things easier for her clients. Large lettering and checking expiration dates go a long way. “Anne is amazing. She greets everyone with a smile and a song. She wants to make an impact on people. Pannone is also well known for her frequent singing to patients. Adding to her special demeanor, she’s described as “the voice for the people because she often tells her clients that every day is Independence Day, and thus they need to stand up for themselves in each day. “When I was growing up, it was during an era without electronics and technology,

Diane’s Sausage Stuffed Zucchini Boats

Brews Cruises

L

ocal farmers have been busy lately producing an abundance of inseason produce for the markets. Many of these items are likely to appear on the grocery list, including zucchini. If you’re putting this healthy item in the shopping cart, consider making Diane Pecca’s Stuffed Zucchini Boats. She says the recipe is “thrifty and easy to make.” Pecca usually serves it with pasta or rice, but noted garlic bread or a side salad will work well, too. After trying the Stuffed Zucchini Boats, the word “stuffed” may be used in a completely different reference.

Still kings of the PIAA throne Neumann-Goretti’s baseball team successfully defended their AA crown ■ By Bill Gelman Review Editor

S

outh Philly residents have been experiencing a major void when it comes to championship parades down South Broad Street. Ever since the Phillies won the World Series in 2008, local pro sports fans have been stuck in that maybe-next-year mentality. Well, the student-athletes at Ss. Neumann-Goretti High School play with a win-now-or-bust approach. The system is working to perfection for the Saints baseball team. The latest example of this came Friday (June 16) afternoon on the Penn State University campus as the East Passyunk Crossing-based Saints defeated Bishop McCort 7-4 in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class AA state final. With the latest win, the Saints, under first year head coach Mike “Zoom” Zolk, can call themselves the back-to-back state champs. “It was awesome,” Zolk said. “It was awesome seeing the kids mature. PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted. Thank You St Joseph for Favors Granted.

M.D.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin (Never Known To Fail)

O most beautiful Flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here you are my mother. O Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth. I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in my necessity (make request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days then you must publish and it will be granted to you. L.T.
