I enrolled in TA — Trump Anonymous, an organization dedicated to members of the media shake their Trump addiction. I poured my heart out at TA meetings where I sat next to Mika Brzezinski (she of a face that doesn’t need lifting). I spoke openly about my own flaws and petty complaints. I watched sports instead of MSNBC and CNN (though I admit that even in my darkest moments of addiction I was never tempted to watch Fox News after Megyn Kelly left). I confined my reading to the sports pages and pretended to get excited over the Sixers prospects (even though The Process is not expected to reach fruition until my grandchildren are on Social Security — if the Republicans haven’t privatized it. But I broke down during the Fourth of July holiday. I blame the liberal company that I keep. Or is that escaping personal accountability? With apologies to my president

Philadelphia consistently have had the highest results. Sales across the 19145, 19146, 19147 and 19148 zip codes accounted for almost 20 percent of all home sales sold in May 2017. “I‘m not surprised by that report because the market in South Philadelphia has been very strong within the past year or so, Joseph Biancaniello, associate broker and coowner of Alpha Realty Group Inc., 1700 W. Moyamensing Ave., said. “The appeal is a few things, but mainly the close proximity to Center City, major highways and our

lthough domestic and professional partners, Rosemary Hay and Rudy Caporaso had been working within the theater industry for years when they decided to move to South Philly to open their own company, REV Theatre Company, focusing on works and creative avenues important to them. Thus, they’ve most recently put together a site-specific, immersive production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet at the Laurel Hill Cemetery that will be performed for a second consecutive week on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 at 8 p.m. As co-artistic directors of their theater company, Hay and Caporaso, residents of Queen Village, have spent a great deal of time making connections and establishing relationships within the Philadelphia theater scene and beyond. For example, stemming from her faculty status at both the University of the Arts and Temple University, Hay has been able to provide her company with access to rehearsal space and additional actors when necessary. Additionally, the couple first coordinated in 2011 a performance of an Irish play, “Carthaginians by Frank McGuinness. The performance was set in a cemetery in Laurel Hill as the play is set in a graveyard in Northern Ireland (specifically, Derry) during the Troubles. Since then, they have established a strong, symbiotic relationship and partnership with the cemetery and its personnel. Through this partnership, REV Theatre Company is able to come to the board of the Laurel Hill Cemetery for approval for

HOUSING MARKET continued from page 1 ing to Biancaniello, are Newbold, Pennsport and Point Breeze, with realtors, such as himself, also noticing a much stronger demand east and west of Broad Street, south of Snyder Avenue. “South Philly in general is very hot right now, Biancaniello said. “The prices are less than many other areas in the city so we’re seeing a lot of younger people looking to buy or even rent. The prices are much higher in Center City, so buyers who are ‘priced out’ start looking where it’s more affordable. He explained this rationale is how all of the so-called “hot neighborhoods began attracting buyers as they look for the more affordable alternatives. Getting his start in the real estate business in 1983, and having been co-owner of Alpha Realty Group for more than 28 years in South Philly, Biancaniello stressed all living trends are connected to city life and the strive to embrace the urban environment at hand. and South Philly’s

apparent “growth spurt, Mike McCann, “The Real Estate Man and associate broker and founder of The McCann Team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Fox & Roach Realtors, noted his team sold more than 250 homes last year and well over 100 so far this year in South Philly. He credits Point Breeze as the hottest area with the most sales and the most appreciation, with Passyunk Square coming in second. “Every block in every area from Washington Avenue down to the naval base is

build new homes or renovate existing ones and possibly even transform a two-story home into a three-story home. Other desires McCann has noticed from those purchasing homes in South Philly are roof decks with beautiful views, finished basements, hardwood floors, plenty of closets and ultra modern kitchens and baths. They also want to be able to walk, ride bikes or take public transportation to theaters, restaurants, clubs or the gym and to go out to meet up with friends.

‘I‘m not surprised by that report because the market in South Philadelphia has been very strong within the past year or so,’ — Joseph Biancaniello experiencing growth, McCann said. “The demand is for mostly nicely renovated homes and [buyers] will pay top dollar for them. The other demand is for old warehouses/lots or run-down properties that can be purchased cheap enough for a builder to

“Many of the people that are buying here are the millennials, single females, single males and young couples ages 26 to 34, McCann said. “They want the social life that the city has to offer.

With something to offer every segment of the market, Barbara A. Capozzi, owner of Capozzi Real Estate / Insurance, Ltd., 3320 S. 20th St., further believes this aspect is where the strong appeal to South Philly stems from. She too believes prospects gravitate to South Philly when looking for higher safety, more reasonable and affordable pricing, easier parking, more peace and quiet and a more “community feel, as well as more friendliness, greenspaces and housing variety (shapes, sizes, ages of homes and amenities). “A short commute from South Philly is a desirable alternative to many previously caught in the ‘walk to work’ myth [of Center City], Capozzi said. “Buyers and renters score much more space and maybe even a yard and parking for what a small airless, sunless efficiency would cost in Center City. Therefore, she explains residencies of all shapes and sizes are currently “hot in South Philly. CARDELLA (I figure that if I own him, there might be a chance at recovery), here’s the way I see it. Hope for our country (or our national sanity) rests on three scenarios: Trump is impeached and removed for colluding with the Russians, he gets bored with the job and quits, or he is declared mentally unfit to fulfill his duties as president and is replaced by vice president Mike Pence. We can eliminate the first scenario. At the slow pace of the current investigations, Baron Trump will be president by the time they conclude. In addition, Fox News (the original fake news network) has already concluded that collusion by a president with an adversarial foreign government is not a crime, unless it was committed by the previous president or Trump’s opponent in the last election. Is there a chance that the president will get bored by the job and quit? Trump may be a lot of things, but he is not bored. In fact, he is loving it. For Trump the job of president is everything he always dreamed of. How else can a real estate developer draw big adoring crowds and get Putin’s autograph? It’s like being Howard Stern only with bigger ratings and being the winning contestant on “Shark Tank. Trump will not resign the presidency. Increasingly the hope of removing Trump from the White House seems to hinge on the invocation of the 25th Amendment, which would allow the vice president, with the consent of the executive cabinet to declare the president unable to perform his duties as president by declaring Trump to be too nutty to continue in office. It would then need the consenting vote of two-thirds of Congress. Do I think that the president is crazy? Let me put it this way — the president is married to one of the most beautiful women in the world and yet he is busy tweeting about Morning Joe at 3 a.m. Speaking for sexist males everywhere, I consider this fact a prima facie case of some form of incapacity. Not that there aren’t other reasons to doubt President Trump’s mental stability. For instance, Trump keeps giving his son-in-law Jared Kushner additional duties. Kushner is 36 years old without any previous government experience. He is re-

â– s o u t h p h i l l y r ev i ew.c o m

sponsible for brokering a Mideast peace, negotiating with China, improving ties with Mexico, innovating government and criminal justice reform. In short, Kushner is the designated president of the United States. My sources tell me that Kushner also ensures that there are fresh flowers placed on every table at White House dinners. The question arises that if Trump has already handed his presidential duties to Kushner, is there any reason to invoke the 25th amendment? Be that as it may, is it possible that Pence, if he is so inclined, g a t h e r s enough Cabinet members - Tom Cardella to declare him mentally incompetent? Off the top of my head, as a minimum, I think Pence could count on support from Secretary of State Rex Tillerson (who is wondering aloud why he ever left Exxon), Secretary of Defense James “Mad Dog Mattis (yes, I realize his nickname hurts his credibility), the head of Homeland Security John F. Kelly (the “F at this point stands for the profanity he must be uttering every time he attends a cabinet meeting), and the head of the CIA Mike Pompeo (he might be dismayed when Trump challenges his intelligence briefings by waving a copy of the National Enquirer at him). The rest of Trump’s Cabinet appears to be solidly behind him either because of their own selfinterest or because they are as crazy as President Bat Guano himself (example — the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson once claimed that the Holocaust could have been diminished if the Jews had guns). As far as getting two-thirds of Congress to declare President Bat Guano crazy, that’s out of the question (even though John McCain might try to vote multiple times and Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan might vote “yes if they could be granted plausible deniability). It’s impossible to get two-thirds of Congress to agree that Kim Jong-un has a bad haircut. George W. Bush reportedly remarked to Barack Obama, after hearing Trump’s inauguration speech, “that was some crazy ____. I never thought of “Dubbya as particularly insightful. It turns out Bush is freaking Nostradamus. SPR

hen you open your front door on Wednesday, July 26, the South Philly Review will likely be sitting on your steps - like the mail, we are aware the time of delivery is not an exact science. Many of you will likely scratch your heads wondering what in the world is going on. Your weekly source for all things South Philly has been delivered on Thursdays of the week for the last 70 years. Our sister publications the Northeast Times and Philadelphia Weekly are distributed on Wednesdays, which means close to 200,000 people across the city will be getting their news on the same day, with each publication targeted to its specific audiences. In terms of content, nothing is going to change. Regular staples such as news, Cardella, Recipe, Police Report, Sports, Lifestyles, Calendar, Around South Philly, Neighborhood Chatter and others will remain as you are accustomed to seeing every Thursday. The upside is South Philly residents will be getting the news one day earlier. If there is a crime in the neighborhood, it will be reported one day sooner. If there is a big event coming to the

avenue, sports complex, Philadelphia Navy Yard or other venue, the change will add an extra day to the planning schedule. After 70 years of the same routine, there is going to be an adjustment period. We still hear from many readers asking why we left our old comfy corner spot at 12th and Porter streets. It was a difficult change, but with several of the Newspaper Media Group publications being based in New Jersey, the move across the bridge made sense so we could all be under one roof. It has not stopped us from sharing the news and happenings from around South Philly. Like those days in South Philly, we are only a phone call (215-336-2500 ext. 121) or email (news@ southphillyreview.com) away. If you have a story idea, send it. The sooner you send it, the better chance it has of appearing in the paper or on southphillyreview.com — one day sooner. For today and Thursday, July 20, things will remain the same. Starting on July 26, and every Wednesday going forward, the process moves up one day. Like the Philadelphia 76ers say, Trust The Process. SPR -By Bill Gelman

REV Theatre brings ‘Hamlet’ to Laurel Hill Cemetery July 14 and 15

lthough domestic and professional partners, Rosemary Hay and Rudy Caporaso had been working within the theater industry for years when they decided to move to South Philly to open their own company, REV Theatre Company, focusing on works and creative avenues important to them. Thus, they’ve most recently put together a site-specific, immersive production of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” at the Laurel Hill Cemetery that will be performed for a second consecutive week on Friday, July 14 and Saturday, July 15 at 8 p.m. Additionally, the couple first coordinated in 2011 a performance of an Irish play, “Carthaginians” by Frank McGuinness.

LIFESTYLES each of its theatrical ideas. As these performances dually bring renewed and regenerated interest in the cemetery space in a way that promotes public consumerism, according to Hay and Caporaso, most of the time the board gives them the goahead. “[REV Theatre Company] does a tremendous amount of outdoor work. The cemetery is so beautifully mysterious and evocative in a way that it seems to be made for a play like ‘Hamlet’ to be performed in,” Caporaso, who will be playing the role of Hamlet in the show about love, murder and revenge, said. “During this performance, the setting will help the audience to contemplate life and death, and the not so great divide between the two.” IN UTILIZING THIS historic Philadelphia cemetery as the stage, Hay and Caporaso further identified that using the grassy areas between gray stones and monuments as part of the fabric of the setting added to its unique theatrical portrayal of the classic play, as well as adding to the audience experience. Due to the natural landscape serving as additives to the scenes, the only

props the company had to externally acquire were a chair, a few fake coffins and contemporary costumes. “I’ve seen [‘Hamlet’] performed in various forms, but never like this,” Hay, who has directed in New York, Philadelphia and regionally including the Williamstown Theatre Festival, said. “To do this play, one needs to bring something fresh and imaginative to it.” In doing just that, the co-artistic directors highlight the juxtaposition between

the cemetery setting, Hay’s editing of the classical text and dark undertones of the play itself to create a masterpiece of their own. Furthermore, they selected actors who demonstrated the ability to perform scenes requiring incredible physical strength, for a lot of intricate use of monuments infused with great physical energy are required throughout the show. “No one should think they’re coming to the show to see people standing around reciting Shakespeare,” Caporaso said. “I like

to say, ‘It’s not your grandma’s Shakespeare.’ We try to blow the cobwebs off of it; no one will think it’s boring.” Adding to its uniqueness, and without giving too much away, Hay and Caporaso also noted that during each performance, the audience is able to work out the plot in their heads as much as the characters are. They believe this element makes the show both more immediate and exciting. “Both the cemetery and the play are not just about grief and death, even though it is a ghost story as far as traditional thinking goes,” Caporaso said. “It’s also about bringing life into the performance. In a traditional theater, an actor can hide behind the curtain, but here the audience has full perception of the characters which is powerful and moving.” Reservations to witness this unique performance are strongly suggested, as are bringing blankets or chairs and a picnic to enjoy before the performance. A rain date for the next show is scheduled for Sunday, July 16. For tickets to the performance, which cost $25 each, visit thelaurelhillcemetery.org. SPR

Steve’s South PaciďŹ c Chicken Skewers

Happy Bastille Day

D

o you enjoy hosting summer get-togethers? Many people are extremely satisfied with making the same old barbecue chicken recipe, even if it a little on the bland side. When Steve Bene has friends and family over for a summer barbecue, he prefers going with his moist and flavorful South Pacific Chicken Skewers. The resident of the 900 block of McClellan Street is not taking all of the credit for this recipe. “My Mom made this one day several years ago, and it was so good that I immediately asked her for the recipe, he said. Bene noted the marinade and ingredients can be flexibly altered to suit whatever tastes or grilling ingredients are on hand.

T

he French National Day, better known as Bastille Day, will be celebrated around the world tomorrow. Many will make the celebration a weekend-long affair. The Good King Tavern, 614 S. 7th St., is shutting down Kater Street, between 7th and 8th for — you guessed it — a Block Party. The food, drink, live music and fun gets under way at 5 p.m. on Friday (July 14). Cash only, pay as you go. The bar will be open until midnight. For more information, call 215-625-3700 or visit thegoodkingtavern.com/events. SPR
