Because all of us know that the American reading public is reading serious stuff such as “War and Peace the rest of the year. Hey, our brains need a rest from checking messages on our iPhones. Mental exhaustion sets in after sharing mac ‘n cheese recipes or post of our favorite rock band in 1975 on Facebook. In America, many folks believe only women read. Reading and churchgoing are considered feminine pursuits. If you catch a man reading a book or peering on a Nook, chances are he’ll feel the need to apologize. “It’s my wife’s book, I’m just holding it for her. A straight man would rather be caught in a restroom in a compromising situation than be found reading a book. Or at least a book by an author other than Tom Clancy. He is the one author men are allowed to read without a drop in their testosterone levels. You might not realize it, but Clancy died four years ago. For the last four years, Clancy’s books have not been written by Clancy. The credo in book publishing today is never let a popular author die. Clancy’s novels, as

Writer: Political mailer misleading, false To the Editor:

I am writing in response to false and misleading information provided to my constituents by the Commonwealth Foundation, an extreme special-interest think tank in Harrisburg. In a political-style mailer, the Commonwealth Foundation urged constituents to contact me about what it terms “corporate welfare for horse racing owners and breeders. The Commonwealth Foundation is aware that the Race Horse Development Fund is supported by assessments against the casino industry and does not receive taxpayer dollars. Yet, it implied that your state tax dollars are being used to support the horse racing industry. This is not true, and the Commonwealth Foundation should retract this statement and apologize for attempting to mislead the public. We may never know who paid for this political-style attack, unless the Commonwealth Foundation discloses it, but it was clearly a special interest with a strong financial stake in the proliferation of video gaming terminals throughout Pennsylvania. Currently, there is a heated battle over the legalization of VGTs in Pennsylvania, which

would allow more than 14,000 new, minicasinos in bars, restaurants, taverns, social clubs, truck stops and similar establishments. Those who favor VGTs are primarily owners and operators of casinos and gaming facilities in other states. Obviously, bars and taverns would like the opportunity to make more money, but the legislation to allow VGTs was written to benefit casino-style operators and would offer these small businesses only a tiny share of the net proceeds from the machines. Even the state would receive a smaller percentage from VGTs than it receives from existing casinos, and because VGTs would compete against and take revenue away from casinos, the state would receive even less. I opposed recent legislation that would have allowed VGTs and weakened Pennsylvania’s horse racing and casino industries, which have a strong impact on job creation and farmland preservation in Pennsylvania. In Bucks County, our local casino and racetrack provide nearly 1,400 year-round jobs — many in the care and maintenance of horses. Horse farms here and across the commonwealth have been preserved and expanded with racing proceeds paid into the Race Horse Development Fund

by casinos intent on enhancing the purses at race tracks. Higher purses attract more horse owners and higher quality horses. As chairman of the House Gaming Oversight Committee, I am concerned that Pennsylvania farms and the horse racing industry would suffer if the legislature moves proceeds from the Race Horse Development Fund to cover yet another state budget shortfall. Testimony in front of this committee clearly shows that this funding has a direct impact on the quality of horse racing and the success of our farmland-preservation program. A reduction in the Race Horse Development Fund would likely cause an industry that employs approximately 23,000 people statewide to leave Pennsylvania. The Commonwealth Foundation should be embarrassed by its attempt to fool my constituents, and ashamed of the misinformation it spread to do so. While we can all have differences of opinion on the topic, I think it is important to set forth facts and not purposely attempt to mislead people. Rep. Scott Petri (R-178th dist.) Chairman, House Gaming Oversight Committee

these programs included a Family Art and Music Jam with Songbird, a Family Arts Night Lantern Workshop, a Love is Love Painting Project, Pride Music and Art Project, Drag Queen Story Time, Family PJ Yoga, Chalkboard Radio Family Lullaby Night and more. Children were also able to participate in Free-Range Toddler Art, Upcycled Dream House Creations, Zoom Dance, Messy Splatter Art, a Frankentoy Laboratory and more. Gallery openings throughout June were also held and local artists were on display throughout the month, including works by Meaghan Paice. Although many of the programs held in June were opened to and designed for the entire family, Lume’s creative services are not limited just to children and families. Instead, some of its adult programming is BYO and has since encompassed a Dirty Embroidery Workshop, Thirsty Thursday Amateur Craft Hour, yoga for tired moms and Full-moon Figure Drawing, a figure drawing class with both a male and female model doing poses. “Some of the events we held were really popular, like the drag queen story time that was sold out,” Lauren Parker, owner and director of Lume Creative Learning Studios LLC., said. “We plan to hold more of these in late summer and early fall.” Having worked as a teaching artist serving the Philadelphia community for more than a decade, Parker explained her service has seen a lot of successful drop-ins since it opened, and families have expressed their apprecia-

tion of the art and music-focused projects it has offered. She believes people have been so responsive to the studio because of its many options and things to do for kids, but also because it’s a little “quirkier and sillier” than other creative service companies. She also commented she thinks the local community has perceived what she’s doing as refreshing. “Some of our events were less full than others last month, but I think that’s normal considering most people haven’t met us yet,”

Parker said. “Overall, we’ve been pretty successful though, and have been getting great responses. We even have a few regular customers and families already.” Moving forward, Lume, named for a play on the word illuminate, with a tagline of “Learn. Create. Illuminate,” plans to continue featuring an array of fun and unpredictable programs. Parker said its goal is also to build great relationships with the community, while developing more regular customers. In do-

ing so, she has made the space available for birthday party packages, which can range in themes from a musical “punk rock kids” to messy art-focused “splash, splatter, spin.” “I want people to want to keep coming back, and for Lume to be a great spot for things to do for kids, adults and families alike,” Parker said. t’s HOT out there. When the temperature outside reaches unbearable levels, desperation takes over. Sure, you could purchase a cup of your favorite water ice flavor or take a dip at the local community pool. When it gets REALLY hot, there is always the old-time South Philly fallback solution of using the corner water hydrant as the neighborhood swimming pool. This picture from the 2500 block of South Franklin Street appeared in the South Philly Review during the summer of 2012. Keep in mind, if city and water department officials catch you in the act, they will likely respond with a “step-away-from-the-water-hydrant! response. Hey, when it soars into mid-90s and feels like 102, sometimes you just have to do what you need to do.

Julius Erving, better known as Dr. J, was on the opposing sideline coaching the Tri-State squad. South Philly casino update: PA Gaming Control Board schedules public hearing on Stadium Casino ownership By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board announced it has scheduled a public hearing on Monday, July 31, for the purpose of receiving additional evidence regarding the ownership of Stadium Casino, LLC which had previously been selected by the board to be awarded the second Philadelphia casino license. The hearing is in response to a June 20 opinion by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court in relation to appeals of the board’s licensing decision. The court agreed with the board on two key issues raised in the appeal, but remanded to the board for the taking of additional evidence for the board to make a determination whether Stadium Casino, LLC principal Watche Manoukian, who holds a controlling interest in the license for the Bensalem-based Parx Casino, possesses a financial interest in the proposed Stadium Casino, LLC project

NE W S

that would exceed the 33 percent ownership cap in a second casino as provided by the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act. The hearing, which will begin at 2 p.m., will be held in the board’s Public Hearing Room on the second floor of Strawberry Square in Harrisburg. The hearing will be streamed live on the board’s website, gamingcontrolboard. pa.gov. The board awarded a Category 2 license to Stadium Casino in November 2014 to permit the operation of a casino at 900 Packer Ave. Live! Hotel and Casino is a joint venture between Greenwood Gaming & Entertainment, LP, and the Cordish Companies, which operates Xfinity LIVE!, 1100 Pattison Ave., at the sports complex. The Philadelphia Planning Commission approved the Stadium Casino master project plan in the fall of 2015. It would include a 2 million-square-foot facility with a Las Vegasstyle casino floor, featuring more than 2,000 slot machines and more than 125 table games; an upscale boutique hotel; spa; valet parking and an approximately 3,000-space parking

*ROGHQ QLJKW ZLWK WKH *ROGHQ %R\V Before taking the stage at SugarHouse, South Philly native Frankie Avalon talks about his career and good friends Bobby Rydell and Fabian Forte Special to South Philly Review

By Bill Gelman

The Golden Boys – from left, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and Fabian Forte – are still going strong 33 years later. They will perform at SugarHouse Casino on July 21.

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

F

rankie Avalon may call California home these days, but he never forgets where his success story began — right here in South Philly. “The best time of my life was growing up in South Philly,” Avalon said. The legendary singer/actor, who has 50 film credits to his name including Teen Angel in “Grease” and Frankie in “Beach Party” doesn’t make it back home much these days, but when he does, Avalon can’t wait to reunite with his hometown fans. Tomorrow night’s appearance at the SugarHouse Casino Events Center will be extra special as he will be taking the stage with his good friends and fellow South Philly icons Bobby Rydell and Fabian Forte – better known as Dick Fox’s Golden Boys. When asked if performing in Philly is extra special, the South Philadelphia High grad, 2101 S. Broad St., wasted little time responding “Of course! That’s our city. That’s our town. That’s our neighborhood.” The childhood friends have their separate lives these days, but the Golden Boys have been performing together off and on for 33 years. Avalon, 77, is older than his two friends from 11th Street, but the former corner-hangers share a chemistry that remains strong today. He said the three of them share a camaraderie and still enjoy coming together. Instead of hanging on the corner of Broad and Shunk, Avalon enjoys hanging on the stage with Rydell and Forte. Sharing stories about growing up in South Philly continues to produce great thrills today. Just like when Dick Fox put the Golden Boys together back in the 1980s, fans can enjoy songs each member of the trio made famous. Avalon made his musical mark with hits like “Venus,” “Ginger Bread” and “I’ll Wait for You.” “Grease” fans of course remember the song “Beauty School DropOut.” Rydell is the voice behind “Wildwood Days,” which tends to be a popular and catchy

LIFESTYLES

tune during the prime Jersey Shore season, as well as “Valore” and “We Got Love,” which was his first top-10 hit. Forte developed his fan base via top-10 hits like “Hound Dog Man,” “Turn Me Loose” and “Tiger.” After all these years, Avalon, who spent time at 9th and Carpenter streets, 20th and Mifflin streets and the 1900 block of South Hemberger St., said the people make the show. Tomorrow night, three of South Philly’s greatest stars, all of whom appear on the South Philly Musicians Remix Mural, 1532 S. Broad St., will come together to perform a compilation of their hits in front of the people who helped them achieve their respective fame.

It’s not only a great place to visit when you’re sick, but it’s also a great place for vybe clinicians to work. Matt Simone, a Clinical Coordinator and Nurse Practitioner at vybe, has always had a passion for helping those in need. We asked Matt a few questions to learn more about him: Q: What is your favorite area of Philadelphia? Matt: I’m very proud of my neighborhood - East Passyunk Crossing. Lots of fantastic people live here and work hard every day to improve the community we call home. It also happens to have the best restaurants in the city. Don’t you agree? Q: What is your favorite workout song? Matt: The best workout I get right now is from a song called “Grapes” that my one-year-old, Sylvie and I shake our hips to. Q: How do you find your vybe? (How do you stay healthy?)

Bruce Hopper, a physician at vybe decided to become a doctor because he loves the variety of treatable medical conditions and finding proactive approaches to keeping people healthy. We asked Dr. Hopper a few questions to learn more about him: Q: What do you like most about working at vybe? Bruce: The “vybe trybe”, is comprised of high quality clinicians, people who are passionate about serving the people of Philadelphia. Q: What’s your favorite Philly sports team or event? Bruce: Though times are tough right now, I am a lifelong Phillies fan and steadfast Eagles fan. Q: What’s your most helpful health tip? Bruce: Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition... especially LCHF (low carb high fat) and nutritional ketosis if you are brave enough. After you experience a visit to vybe it becomes even more clear that vybe is committed to supporting the community and making South Philly healthier. Next time you visit, remember to say hello to Matt and Bruce - they’ll be ready to help you feel better as soon as you walk in!

Matt: I believe it is very important to build a well-balanced lifestyle that includes activities that allow for self-reflection and self-improvement. It also doesn’t hurt to mix in a little fun every now and again!

amily get-togethers are a big part of the Fourth of July. Sometimes it centers around fireworks and barbecues while others prefer doing an extended stay at the Jersey Shore. However, what took place at Citizens Bank Park on July 3 topped them all. Eva Allmond, 6, and Temple Allmond, 4, had not spoken to their mom, Sgt. Andria Allmond, for a month. The Northeast Philadelphia resident was deployed in April and is in her 12th year of service with the United States Air Force with six tours of duty to her credit. Little did her son and daughter know that this trip to the Phillies game with their father, Forrest Allmond, would be one of those made-for-TV-tear-jerking moments. The Phillies, in conjunction with the Liberty USO, surprised the family with a video message on the scoreboard from their mom who is currently deployed in an undisclosed location. The family was also presented with jerseys on the field by Phillies Tommy Joseph, Howie Kendrick and Adam Morgan. Sgt. Allmond has earned several honors while serving her country, including Air

n the old days, when NFL teams trained at remote locations and television cameras waited as the players parked their luxury automobiles and piled into their pint-sized dormitory rooms carrying fans and enough personal belongings to get them through six weeks of football drudgery, training camp carried with it a hard-scrabbled, it’stime-to-pay-the-price feel. Now, most teams in the league hold training camp at their everyday facilities. Instead of thousands of fans arriving early to stand through the heat of the day and watch from the sidelines, there is room for only a few hundred. No longer do teams beat the living snot out

Dave

Spadaro

of the players on the field; the tackling is now conducted more judiciously to avoid excessive injury. So it’s a different world. But the purpose of the Rite Of Summer that signals the waning of summer and teases of the season to come remains the same: Weed through the roster and find the best 53 players to go out and win football games when September rolls around. The Eagles have some very clear objectives for training camp, which opens on Sunday, July 24, when rookies and selected veterans report to the NovaCare Complex, there are two open-to-the-public practices scheduled for July 29 and Aug. 6 at Lincoln Financial Field – as head coach Doug Pederson begins his second year at the helm. )LQG $ 6WDUWLQJ /HIW 2IIHQVLYH *XDUG There aren’t many true open competitions for starting jobs within an offense that is expected to be vastly improved, but left guard is absolutely one of them. The Eagles have a couple of very clear-cut candidates in veteran

Allen Barbre, the incumbent who has been a journeyman for much of his NFL career, and second-year man Isaac Seumalo. The Eagles like Barbre’s versatility and they love the upside of Seumalo, who showed great promise as a rookie. Seumalo has the edge in terms of pure ability. Another candidate to watch is Chance Warmack, the 10th pick in the 2013 NFL draft (Tennessee) who is looking to regain his dominance now that he’s reunited with his college line coach, Jeff Stoutland, now with the Eagles. 3UHSDUH D \RXQJ &% JURXS IRU FKDOOHQJ LQJ VHDVRQ DKHDG The biggest question mark on the team? The cornerbacks, without a doubt. This group is young and loaded with intrigue. Who starts? Are the Eagles good enough here? *HW 4% &DUVRQ :HQW] +RW +RW +RW Carson Wentz is The Franchise, and the Eagles added veteran wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith in free agency, and then selected Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson in the draft. Wentz is expected to take a

significant leap in his second season. How high does he jump? Are we talking superstar in Year 2? 6HSDUDWH IDFW IURP ILFWLRQ DPRQJ URRNLHV The fantasy world of no-pads football in spring is long in the past. Now it’s the real deal. And the Eagles are going to find out how good No. 1 pick Derek Barnett is with the pads on. They need to find out if running back Donnel Pumphrey can play with the big boys. The game changes in a big way in training camp. 6WD\ DV KHDOWK\ DV SRVVLEOH This is the ultimate objective, of course. The Eagles have three weeks of camp, a visit for three days of practice from the Miami Dolphins and four preseason games to keep their fingers crossed and stay healthy. It’s a must-have if the team has any chance for a playoff spot in 2017. The season is here. The action is live. Now we’re going to start seeing what kind of team the Eagles have for the season to come. It’s been a long, long wait.
