hey’re here: Hillary, Bernie, Chelsea - the whole bunch. Now, while officials are telling us to stay cool, that the Democratic National Convention that South Philly hosts next week is no bigger or worse than your av-

erage Eagles game at the Linc, we see ominous signs of trouble: Some bars can stay open past 2 a.m‌. Uber is suddenly legal‌ The cops will be handing out $100 tickets instead of sending protestors to jail for disorderly conduct‌

Fergie is headlining a concert. And possibly worst of all: No parking in the middle of Broad Street. It’s starting to sound like a reallife version of “The Purge: Election Year, where the usual rules

of law and order are temporarily suspended and we’re left to fend for ourselves. But don’t fret; you’ve got the South Philly Review Guide to Surviving the Democrats. ASS AC@D7D/: ^OUS ,,

ate last decade, Rajiv Shah, though enamored with his employment within the theater world, sought to take a break and looked for a job with a predictable schedule, ultimately applying to a bank. When his application met with rejection, he chose to count on his calling minus any hiatus and has continued to combine his creative profundity and cordial personality for numerous productions, with Orbiter 3 enlisting him as its resident technical director, a title the resident of the

1800 block of Wharton Street is reveling in as the collective stages “I Am Not My Motherland. “It’s easily one of the best companies that I have worked for, the 36-year-old said of the thriving South Philly residentdominant entity. “I like to engage with the Orbiters because there’s so much dedication to taking chances and addressing important topics. His peers’ offering marks the third production for the group, with Emily Acker handling the writing duties in crafting a tale that retells stories of “collective grief and collective possibility, per Orbiter 3’s

website, following the futile execution of a live-saving operation by a PalestinianAmerican surgeon and her Israeli-American resident. Accustomed to working with established and new material, with “I Am Not My Motherland as a world premiere, Shah does not burden himself based on the relative age of a piece, feeling he needs to convey a director’s desires as best as he can. Not the component that draws the applause, his work nonetheless resounds as a mammoth part of presenting a provocative theater experience. “I like to feed off the creativity that the contributors bring and the content, too, if

I’m familiar with it, Shah said. “There are definitely some occasional challenges, but, in the end, everything is incredibly rewarding, especially when I’m working on something that is in Philadelphia because it has such a unique and compelling theater community and the productions are always trying to inspire conversations on what contemporary life is all about. The metropolis is making for a pleasant engagement for the Point Breeze occupant, as the Center City-based St. Stephen’s Theater is staging the three-person play through July 31. Shah oversaw technical directing duties for Orbiter’s 2015 endeavors “Moon

BVS QVOZZS\USa ]T QVO\US To our Readers: Though I cannot say that I have engaged thousands or even hundreds of people for their opinions, I believe I have had a fair amount of conversations and have read a wide range of reports to suggest that this country’s citizens eagerly want for this election cycle to be done. I have heard supporters of the major parties express incredible discontent, finding hard to fathom that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton will be the names they see before them when they enter voting booths. I have also interacted with people who are thrilled to be able to have an opportunity to give the Democrats a thirdstraight presidential victory and individuals who trumpet Trump as an agent of renewed vigor. No matter where you stand, especially if your vote will go to neither candidate 110 days from now, may the nominating conventions serve as more than a chance for you to reject the office seekers’ principles and their adherents’ allegiance. Here’s hoping you also find the strength to tolerate, even welcome, the changes that a new administration will bring.

Joseph Myers South Philly Review editor

:WPS`OZ OZZSUWO\QS To the Editor: After reading “America the Great from the July 7 issue, I certainly know who Mr. Cardella will be supporting in the general election. It’s clear that he will never support a Republican running for any office. Mr. Cardella, you think the Democratic Party has all the answers, but you are wrong. I have lived in this city for 79 years and know this is not so. And, yes, for your information, I am a rare South Philadelphia Republican. Domenick Lazzaro Jr. South Philadelphia

cades ago (“Communion breakdown, July 14.) From his description, that first so-called “marriage probably could have been annulled by both civil and religious authorities. I still think it is possible to correct that mistake and have a valid church wedding performed. What Pope Francis is urging is that Catholics, who find themselves in such awkward situations, seek guidance and a way back to the sacrament. Archbishop Charles Chaput was merely and clumsily listing the rules. The Pope never changed those rules. But he wants bishops and priests to facilitate as much reconciliation as possible. Robert should urge his parents to seek spiritual counsel on this issue. It is time. Gloria Endres South Philadelphia

<Se ]e\S`aVW^ On Friday, the South Philly Review took on a new owner. Here are the contents from a release explaining the transaction. Richard Donnelly, president of Donnelly Distribution (Pennsauken, N.J.), announced that he has acquired Broad Street Media and its affiliates. The Philadelphia-area community newspaper and magazine group publishes more than a dozen separate publications. The group includes the award-winning Philadelphia Weekly alternative weekly and the longstanding Northeast Times and South Philly Review. Together, the publications have a weekly unpaid circulation of more than one-half million. Donnelly, a minority owner of Broad Street Media, purchased the company from former CEO Darwin Oordt and others who had operated the company since 2010. “I’m a true believer in the value of community newspapers, and it’s my aim to support journalistic excellence at all of these publications, Donnelly said. “We have already developed exciting plans for their future. Donnelly announced immediate plans to expand distribution of Philadelphia Weekly to sections beyond the weekly’s traditional Center City turf, including Manayunk, Roxborough and East Falls in the northwest, and the burgeoning neighborhoods of Northern Liberties and Fishtown in the north. Additionally, Donnelly named veteran Philadelphia newspaperman Don Russell to lead the publications’ editorial growth as editor in chief of Broad Street Media. “Philadelphia needs an alternative, community-based journalistic voice more than ever, Russell said. “I’m excited to work with Rich to build all of Broad Street Media’s publications, and to give the city’s neighborhoods and suburbs the newspapers they deserve. In addition to Russell, Broad Street Media will be led by a management team, including: Perry Corsetti, publisher, served previous “I don’t like either [Donald] Trump or [Hillary] Clinton. I can see a good point or two for each, but I don’t think either would be a great leader. Ahmed Saad, Beverly, New Jersey

Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m terms as publisher of Broad Street Media, as well as advertising and finance positions at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Corsetti is also a board member at the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. Bob Jacobs is the former publisher of The Guide in Philadelphia and has served as chairman of Northeastern Hospital, board member at Temple University Hospital and advertising executive at Donnelly Distribution. John Gallo is the longtime chief operating officer of South Philly Review. Brandon Chamberlain, general manager, has held advertising management, production and IT positions at several newspapers, including the Village Voice in New York and Broad Street Media. About Broad Street Media: Founded in 2010, the company publishes a group of community newspapers and specialty products with a total combined circulation of more than 500,000. These include South Philly Review, Northeast Times, the Star, and Philadelphia Weekly in Philadelphia; the Midweek Wire in Bucks County, Pa.; Montgomery County Living magazine in Montgomery County, Pa.; the Wire newspaper, and Gloucester County Living and Burlington County Living magazines in southern New Jersey; Employment Weekly in Philadelphia and New Jersey; the Princeton Packet in New Jersey and Football Stories magazine in New Jersey. The company has about 100 employees. About Richard Donnelly: Starting from his brother’s garage in 1976, Donnelly built Donnelly Distribution as the Philadelphia region’s largest advertising distribution company. Operating out of a 40,000-square-foot facility in Pennsauken, N.J., it packages advertising inserts for delivery, reaching nearly 900,000 homes every week. About Don Russell: Known to newspaper readers as beer reporter Joe Sixpack, Russell previously served as a reporter, editor and columnist at the Philadelphia Daily News. A Philadelphia native, he was the creator of Philly Beer Week, the nation’s first and largest citywide beer festival; and was the first executive director of the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild.

“With the email scandal, I cannot believe Clinton is not in prison. With Trump, there’s just a massive amount of insensitivity. Overall, there are such passionate factions that we end up with a stalemate, and that’s where we are today. Chris Larocque, Austin, Texas

n July 14, an indictment noted that Grant Shea, of the 2000 block of South Dorrance Street, will face one count of receipt of child pornography, distribution of child porn, and possession of child porn. This announcement stems from the allegation that on about April 24, the 29-year-old, then the health and human services program manager at the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management, received via the Internet a visual depiction of a minor engaging in sexually explicit conduct, with the report contending that he also distributed the image. The document adds that on June 2, the South Philadelphian knowingly possessed computers that included material that involved “the use of minors, including prepubescent minors and minors who had not attained 12 years of age, engaging in sexually explicit conduct. The indictment also reveals that a search of his home occurred, with officials seizing a desktop computer and two laptops. Shea entered a “not guilty plea during his Friday arraignment and is under electronic monitoring at his home.

Two teenagers became robbery and assault victims in West Passyunk. At approximately 7 p.m. July 6, police met with the complainants on the 2500 block of Wolf Street, learning from the chief adolescent that he had been in the area to sell his motorcycle, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. While he was showing the item to a quartet of individuals, the primary offender pulled out a handgun and demanded “Give me everything out of your pockets. Two more members of the party punched the complainants’ acquaintance, with the final figure hopping on the motorcycle and driving eastbound on Wolf Street toward 24th Street. On Monday, Philadelphia District Attorney R. Seth Williams announced that Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Nelson Agholor will not face charges with regards to an alleged sexual assault that occurred June 9 at Cheerleader’s Gentlemen’s Club, 2740 S. Front St. Through a statement, Williams noted “The District Attorney’s Family Violence and Sexual Assault Unit and detectives from the Philadelphia Police Department’s Special Victims Unit thoroughly investigated the allegations of sexual assault against Nelson Agholor. As a result of this joint investigation, our staff and the Police reached the conclusion that we lacked sufficient evidence to bring charges against Mr. Agholor; therefore, no charges will be filed.

/QQWRS\bOZ W\Xc`WSa Two women suffered gunshot wounds in Grays Ferry Saturday. Standing outside a sports bar on the 1300 block of South 33rd Street at approximately 10:25 p.m., the individuals heard a loud popping sound, immediately running from the scene upon becoming aware of it. The frightened figures drove themselves to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania when discovering they had both sustained injuries, with the 28-year-old victim struck under her right eye and the 26-year-old complainant hit in the legs and her right side. Personnel listed them in stable condition. Authorities, as of press time, had not made any arrests and revealed the shooting was accidental, stating that a man had unintentionally discharged his gun. Subtle or extravagant, local decorations never leave me hanging for a chance to flash a smile. 5) Recite prayers at church: As I have confessed before, I like to attend Mass at different churches and always find myself among those who do not need their prayer books as refreshers in offering praise. In an age where the secular world dominates, I consider such retention heartwarming. 4) Cook: See my simple explanation in item number eight. From established cooks to burgeoning kitchen devotees, South Philly sticks a fork in the competition. No matter whether the calendar bears a celebration shared by thousands or a few, one can be sure that local pots, pans, ovens, and stoves are making acquaintance with some fascinating food. 3) Tell stories: If Hollywood ever grows tired of issuing sequels and remakes, executives should flock to South Philly for new material, as I have met some people who can spin a yarn. Imagine the plots that they could weave out of locals’ tales. We might even have some Oscar-worthy raconteurs ready to reap the benefits of simply receiving a chance. 2) Give advice: Since Al Pacino is one of my favorite actors, I fondly recall his line “The worst vice is advice from 1997’s “The Devil’s Advocate. South Philadelphians prove him wrong each day, as it appears we have a ton of amateur life coaches and sages in our midst. I love the compassion that we show one another when we are downtrodden. That is another tradition that I hope our children prolong. 1) Show love: Absolutely nothing will ever conquer love, and the brands that South Philadelphians show, whether they be romantic connections or familial bonds, are unmatched. The expression of such devotion tops this list of what South Philadelphians do well, and it heads my hopes when I consider what I want the most for us as we make the most out of our finite time together. ultural anthropologist Margaret Mead humorously stated “Always remember that you are absolutely unique. Just like everyone else. That sentiment came to mind recently when I thought about what makes South Philly a wonderful place to call home and visit. Discovering individuality has always struck me as a compelling activity, but for this list, I wanted to look at what I think South Philadelphians collectively do well. Yes, I am likely guilty of a generalization or two, but I find myself so enamored with the talented people here that I will gladly bear that description. 10) Support sports teams: I find it incredibly sad that we have not been able to unite on Broad Street that often for championship celebrations. What we lack in enjoying lengthy processions, though, we make up for in employing amazing athletes whose sole goal is to give us payback for forking over our money to see their efforts. 9) Display cultural pride: There are many people who dislike their color and/ or culture for numerous reasons, but I have never encountered such individuals in South Philly. I have found folks who feast on occasions to speak about and display their cultural pride, with many of them serving as educators for me in my attempts to become even the tiniest bit more worldly. 8) Welcome a new year: Who can even slightly rival the manner in which South Philadelphians celebrate New Year’s Day? Case closed. 7) Maintain traditions: I have immense respect for residents who strive to keep the practices of their youth and their ancestors’ childhoods going strong. As I watch the maturation of local children, I hope they maintain their households’ traditions,

State donkeys: New Jersey and New Hampshire

Joy Waldinger

State donkeys: Washington and North Dakota What research did you do beforehand? I have never been to either of these states, however through this experience I now plan on visiting Washington and North Dakota. I researched these states by doing simple Google and YouTube searches for content and images. Did your donkey give you any trouble? Yes, it was challenging to paint some-

Describe the elements of the donkey: New Jersey gave me great stuff to work with, perfect for my style. Atlantic City, Frank Sinatra, The “Trenton Makes bridge, the N.J. state seal, Tick Tock diner. I designed a sort of steel-pier/carnival midway-themed motif to decorate the legs and head. What’s the secret to painting a donkey? It helped to jack the donkeys up on buckets of paint or boxes to paint the undercarriage and legs without having to lie on the concrete floor for 14 hours. More difficult than the curves was the bumpy, hair texture molded on the donkeys. - By Anastasia Barbalios, Jacqueline Rupp, Joseph Myers and Broad Street Media staff SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

nton Moore, of the 2000 block of Snyder Avenue, will speak Tuesday as part of the Democratic National Convention. The 2011 South Philly Review Difference Maker and founder of Unity in the Community will address the perils of gun violence and submitted these reflections on what locals and guests can enjoy about the four-day gathering. Localizing the event The first thing I think people should enjoy about the Democratic Convention is

National spotlight The second thing people should enjoy about the convention is that Philadelphia will be on the national stage. Philadelphia is a thriving city with cool spots to hang out at and eat as well. When you have a city like Philadelphia in the national spotlight, it inspires people around the world to want to visit Philadelphia and help the businesses within the city make money. Freedom of speech The power of freedom of speech will be on full display during the convention. I think we have to give kudos to the City of Philadelphia for giving the protestors the opportunity to voice their opinion and concerns in a respectful manner at FDR Park here in South Philadelphia. We can all agree to disagree on various issues as long as we are respectful and courteous to one another. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/briefs.

ate last decade, Rajiv Shah, though enamored with his employment within the theater world, sought to take a break and looked for a job with a predictable schedule, ultimately applying to a bank.

B?<;IJOB;I Man Walk by South Philadelphia-based Barrymore Award winner James Ijames and “A Knee That Can Bend, so he is happy to have a hat trick of successes for the widely respected union of some of Philadelphia’s finest creative minds, who will offer three more plays through next year before transforming their brainchild into an online resource for entrepreneurial theater makers. “I love that each show is at a different venue and by a different writer, he said of the appealing nature of what Ijames, Emma Goidel, Maura Krause, Acker, Douglas Williams, Lauren Feldman, Sam Henderson, and Mary Tuomanen ponder and present. “I’ve had many opportunities in this profession, and I’m thankful for them all, particularly this one because Orbiter 3 is really taking off and I’m among these amazing people who are natural encouragers. THE UPPER DARBY product has been involved with theater since middle school, growing as an artistic appreciator and helper through his Delaware County turf’s summer stage productions. built his resolve, influencing his penchant for being a behind-the-scenes factor in the business. “I never considered being an actor, Shah confessed. “In fact, while the other students went through different tracks, like lighting or sound, I stayed in the shop and grew my passion for this line of work. Matriculating at Temple University with technical theater and set design as his concentrations, the son of Indian immigrants enjoyed taking on a worldly approach through his studies, holding that no matter which books he would be cracking open, the text would direct him to some lessons that would enhance his professional journey. Commencing employment in 2001 with the Charleston, S.C.-based Spoleto Festival USA, which unites renowned and burgeoning opera, theater, dance, and music practitioners for 17 days each spring, Shah, who retained his connection to the Palmetto State celebration for 12 years, gained a wonderful introduction to the workings of engrossing tasks, with production manager responsibilities for international and domestic tours of “Porgy &

Bess intensifying his joy from ’02 to ’09. “Encountering so many places that were thrilled to have a great story before them amazed me, Shah said of his connection to the George and Ira Gershwin opera, with European lands as his primary stops. “It all made for a great collection of memories that I call on occasionally. The seven-year South Philly inhabitant, whose other extremely commendable credits include head carpenter gigs for the national tour of The Martha Graham Dance Co., “Avenue Q, and “Ain’t Misbehavin,’ which took him to France, Germany, and Greece, also uses his Philadelphia experiences as opportunities to stroll down memory lane, and, with his line of employment, one might suspect that he has constructed a few figurative thoroughfares to cover. Among others, Prince Music and Lantern theaters; Swim Pony Performing Arts; Pig Iron; Inis Nua and Amaryllis theatre companies; and the South Philly-friendly Berserker Residents and The idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium have helped him to feel happy about continuing to carve out a career here. Next month, he will celebrate

his third year as the technical director at Villanova University, where his interactions with graduate students expose him to enthusiastic enrollees whom he is proud to dub contemporaries. “I really try to keep busy because I love to create, Shah, who will co-technical direct the July 27-31 Shakespeare in Clark Park production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona and who has embarked on set design for the Delaware Shakespeare Festival’s “The Comedy of Errors, which has the same run as “I Am Not My Motherland, said of his tenacity. “I tried to step away from this field a few years ago to have a bit of a change, but that wasn’t meant to be, and, fortunately, I’ve been able to stay active, which is great considering the abundance of diverse shows in Philadelphia. SPR

here are different reasons to get excited over the Democrats coming to town to hold their convention next week. A week after they leave, we’ll finally get rid of all those “cute donkey statues around Center City. Columnist’s note - there will still be a lot of asses left in Philly even after the donkeys are removed. Uncle Nunzi always thought it would actually be a great idea to put a wellknown politician’s face on each donkey. The only criteria would’ve been the politician would have to have been convicted of a felony. Personally, I think the Ozzie Myers and Milton Street donkeys would’ve been the most popular. As it was, the idea was soundly rejected, and instead each donkey bears the name of a state. The “Colorado donkey bears a perpetual scowl, no doubt because it is positioned outside the Union League, with its long history of Republican worship. In our neck of the woods (a colloquialism hardly ever applied to South Philadelphia), next week’s convention is expected to provide a boost to the South Jersey Shore. The prospect of protesters camping in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park (League Island or the Lakes to us) is expected to create a massive exodus not seen since Grateful Dead fans littered this area. Protests, no matter how well intentioned, are not part of our DNA, unless they’re marching in support of making the roast pork sandwich our state emblem. If you want to effect social change, elect crooked politicians and bribe them. It works for us. Happy to see that Bernie Sanders finally endorsed Hillary Clinton for President. Now they can cancel the dance number scheduled for Day 1 of the convention - Undecided Now. Clinton has some very high unfavorable ratings. If she beats Donald Trump, it is likely that the Democrats will change their old theme from “Happy Days Are Here Again to Billie Holiday’s “Glad to Be Unhappy. Sanders almost took longer to make his endorsement than his look-a-like Larry David did to decide to bring back “Curb Your Enthusiasm. In fact, the Vermont senator did a great job of curbing his own enthusiasm at the thought of endorsing Clinton. She did seem to cave on a number of Sanders’ pet ideas, but rumor has it that she was crossing her fingers behind her back when she did so. The TV networks are probably disappointed that we don’t have a Sanders-Trump matchup in the fall. The public relations folks could have promoted the matchup as the Socialist versus the Sociopath. Once again, dear reader, I’ve gotten hold of the highlights of next week’s Democratic Convention to share with you.

Exceptional Care in the Comfort of Your Home Why JEVS at Home:

Day 1 (July 25) I’m not predicting a bloodbath over the party’s platform, but I understand that the Red Cross is asking for emergency donors. To use a source’s quote, “There hasn’t been this much blood spilled since Sonny tried to get through the Long Beach Causeway Toll Plaza in ‘The Godfather.’ A prominent rumor of unknown origin on Facebook claims that Bill Clinton has been locked in the basement of the Warwick Hotel for the duration of the convention. The evening will conclude with a fiery keynote speech by Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Warren’s performance is praised by partisans, but Trump tweets the following - “She doesn’t like it when I call her Pocahontas, but did you notice that she was wearing moccasins? Wow! Unbelievable! #-I love the Indian people. Day 2 (July 26) Chelsea Clinton is scheduled to speak. She is expected to extol the virtues of her mother’s chocolate chip cookies (“I don’t want to say that Mom is a nerd, but she named each cookie after a little known country. Her recipe was titled a FIVE-POINT PROGRAM FOR BAKING CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES.) Bernie Sanders will address an enthusiastic crowd that chants BERNIE! BERNIE! until Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Chairperson of the Democratic National Committee, is forced to come on stage (amid boos) and remind the crowd that it’s Hillary Clinton they are there to nominate as their party’s presidential candidate. Day 3 (July 27) It is time for the Vice-Presidential nominee, Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia, to speak. Many of the delegates are disappointed that the nominee is not Warren, and they begin once again singing “Glad To Be Unhappy. Uncle Nunzi is surprised that Clinton didn’t choose Bill as her running mate. I mention that not everyone has NETFLIX and seen “House of Cards. Republican Congressman Trey Gowdy picks this day to announce yet another congressional investigation into Hillary Clinton. The subject of the investigation, to our surprise, is not either Benghazi or the Clinton e-mails, but on why Hillary takes so long in the restroom. Day 4 (July 28) Hillary Clinton accepts the Democratic nomination for President. Her speech consists of one word “finally. However, she does mention her 10-point plan for the use of the word “finally. On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow debate whether it is proper to call the party Democrat or Democratic. Fox News features a spirited debate on whether Hillary will be indicted for taking too long in the restroom. Sean Hannity believes it is worth a five-year prison sentence. Bill O’Reilly adds that it proves that Hillary is “not a regular guy with whom you can share a beer. Roger Ailes, the head of the network, proudly asserts that Hillary is the one female whom neither he nor Donald Trump has ever hit on. Mildred’s Cheese Balls

Abandoning convention

M

ildred Lloyd-Henderson has served as a loyal contributor to this publication for years, so on account of her recent submission, the South Philly Review has the conviction to call her “The Belle of the Balls. The resident of the 2400 block of Manton Street certainly does not skimp on the chief ingredient in her cheese balls, crafting them with five kinds of the milky goodie. With a great assortment of seasonings, too, this creation from the Point Breeze inhabitant is certainly worth placing on grain-based products and spreading the news of among relatives, friends, and neighbors who cherish cheese. hen I reviewed Bibou more than six years ago, I found it to be one of the finest new restaurants of the year. Chef Pierre Calmels, who once worked at Le Bec-Fin, planned the perfect French menu. He and Charlotte, his charming wife, also own Le Cheri near Rittenhouse Square. Bibou, located within the South Ninth Street Italian Market, closed more than a year ago for renovations. The results are stunning. Bibou, which is BYOB and cash only, has a perfect staff and a wonderful seven-course menu priced at $100 per person. I always celebrate Bastille Day in a French restaurant, so Bibou immediately came to mind. The dining room seats 18 guests. The tin ceiling remains and one wall is papered in a pretty blue/green with gold running through it. A large picture window allows natural light to set the room. Calmels ordered navy blue wool berets from France for his waiters to wear on Bastille Day. Jeffrey, our server, who graduated from the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College, also wore a nifty bow tie. Dinner began with an amuse-bouche of seared gnocchi that set my appetite. We brought a dry Riesling from Alsace that we enjoyed with the first few courses. We also brought an Xavier, a French burgundy. Calmers did much research so his dishes reflected the cuisine at the time of the French Revolution. Chilled Dubarry cream consisted of an aged mimolette foam served with truffle toast. The headiness of the truffle played off beautifully with the light creamy foam. Few restaurants serve razor clams. Thank goodness Calmels placed them on the menu. The long, narrow shell served as the vessel for bits of tender clam, beets, and a mousse of guinea hen, which was piped into tiny stars and finished with fennel flower. Fennel flower can be mighty potent; Calmels, however, had the right touch. Dover sole is my favorite fish. I first tasted it in London nearly 35 years ago. It is light, delicate and filled with flavor. Calmels paired it with white anchovy, artichoke, and olive puree and topped it with a milky foam laced with tarragon. I never thought of using tarragon to enhance fish. I have some growing in my garden, and I am going to try it at home. Calmels always has foie gras on the menu. He taught me how to prepare it in my kitchen on a brutally hot July day six years ago. He made a crème caramel with the foie gras and paired it with cherries, which are in season now and are absolutely scrumptious. I don’t usually think of pumpkin as being served in the summer, but

P h o t o b y Ti n a G a r c e a u

Calmels served this dish with pumpkin bread. The pastry chef at Le Cheri bakes the breads for Bibou. The baguette took me straight back to Paris. The olive bread was Mediterraneaninspired. We slathered on the butter and enjoyed several rounds of bread. I have always preferred lamb to beef. I grew up on lamb chops, which my mother simply broiled topped with salt and pepper. Calmels presented lamb two ways. The chop was seasoned and seared to medium rare. Shoulder chops, which can be a bit tough, were braised long and slowly and shredded as one might do with pork. The shredded lamb was topped with a crispy round of potato and served with Swiss chard, one of my favorite vegetables. Calmels placed some natural jus on the plate for added flavor. The cheese courses consisted of Bleu de Bresse, which was paired with a crouton and praline made with pumpkin seeds. I had never tasted a white peach hot soufflÊ. White peaches are in season, and they are juicy and sweet. Jeffrey made a little well in the center of the soufflÊ and poured in some crème anglaise. I scraped every bit of this dessert from the bottom and sides of the soufflÊ dish. Espresso and coconut macaroons, along with bits of vanilla Madeleines, ended a perfect meal. Calmels proved once again that he is one of the finest chefs in Philadelphia. He made his way around the room and chatted with each guest. His hires are second to none. They know how to pace the meal and knew exactly when to fill our beautiful wine glasses, which were crafted in France. Bibou is open for dinner Wednesday through Saturday. There are two seatings, 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Bring the best bottle of wine you have in your wine rack. Reservations are an absolute must. Four extraordinary tips of the toque to Bibou. SPR

For Pete’s Sake Pub’s Cuban Sandwich

E

hen then-17-year-old Brendan Arnold introduced himself to Peter Quinn as the latter was looking to make For Pete’s Sake Pub, 900 S. Front St., a standout location, the adolescent revealed to the businessman that he desired to be the best chef in the world. Fourteen years later, the two have become neighborhood staples, with the hire continuing to aspire to additional greatness. “I liked his attitude and told him that I’d start him off with dish duty, the proprietor said with a laugh from the Queen Village space. “Everything has unfolded well because we’re dedicated to giving people excellent food and drink options and considerate service. The resident of the 1300 block of Federal Street came to call the spot his after a career in kitchen and bath design. Eager to do something different, he actualized a long-held dream and has never wished that his wish would have been less intense. “After all, doesn’t every Irishman want to own a bar? Arnold, of Front and Sigel streets, comically inquired. The South Philly native received excellent tutelage from his grandmothers, with For Pete’s Sake Pub intensifying a love for food that developed during his boyhood. Growing up around the corner from his place of employment, he enjoys continuing his connection to Queen Village, sharing that joy with his boss, who used to reside on the 400 block of Fitzwater Street. “This is a great social location, Quinn stated, with Thursday evening Quizzo offerings and private party opportunities as boons. “I saw a niche and a need when I purchased this place in October 2001, so when we opened the following July, we just wanted to be able to start off strong and maintain growth. W. Sharswood School, 2300 S. Second St. The former had company through friends Lisa and Ryan Pacetti, Amanda Casile, and Shannon Wright, while the latter lass rode individually, but regardless of the classification of their endeavors, they never lost sight of reaching the finish line and reveling with fellow enthusiasts. “It would have been easy to think that I could be in a hotel and gambling when we entered Atlantic City, but there’s so much beyond just our lives to think about, Pierandozzi stated. “When we ended the ride, I think we all knew we’d been part of something amazing. “The last 13 miles were a real test, Campagna confessed. “I was in tears over the emotions that doing this brought out in me, and you know what, I can’t wait to start to think about doing again next year. It’s that necessary. The six-figure tally from Sunday will see more than 80 percent of the funds go directly to local children in need through the Irish Pub Children’s Foundation. Knowing their selflessness will encourage beneficiaries to look beyond their sadness and grief in order to make great lives and do their fallen family members proud resonates especially with Pierandozzi. “As I said, it’s easy just to be all about

yourself in this day and age, the educator, who has also shown her giving nature through Stockings for Soldiers efforts, said. “I think it’s more rewarding to look outside yourself, though, and I like doing that, especially on Sunday because I believe we should look out for those who protect us.

their beloved relative went by the nickname “The Big Kahuna. Bearing shirts that featured his favorite saying, “Good night, and God bless, the grieving yet grateful group enjoyed an amazing bonding experience, with the Marconi product noting that their preparation for and subsequent execution of the task has tightened their bonds and given her more eagerness for riding. “I enjoy trips around my neighborhood, she said. “I’m sure this will likely also lead to more talks on what else we can do in addition to thinking about coming back next year. Kathy also laughed when discussing her abode, noting the presence of bicycles as complements to the other athletic equipment that it holds. Along with adding items to her residence, the ride, whose organizers claimed the 2013 National Restaurant Association’s Restaurant Neighbor Award for its outstanding charitable service initiatives, has also engendered more appreciation for her brotherin-law and his first responders brethren. “I have great respect for what they do each day, she said. “To contribute to their caring legacy really touches my heart. SPR

KATHY MURPHY KNOWS quite well about the dangers that first responders face, as her husband, Shawn, and recently deceased brother-in-law, Buddy, ended up shot in 1994 when working as officers for the Philadelphia Police Department. Highly familiar with fundraisers through her partner’s employment and role within the Fishtown Athletic Club, the native of the 2000 block of Jackson Street revered the opportunity to be a part of Sunday’s gathering. “When you realize how devastating it can be to lose someone and how much of a hole that leaves in your life, you can either give up on trying to move on from the pain or you can stop letting the sadness take over, the Fishtown inhabitant said. “The ride is all about trying to make a difference, and that’s what my family and I tried to do by participating. The 50-year-old and her kin honored Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@ Buddy Murphy, who died in January, by southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Campagna said Tuesday from her residence on the 1800 block of Gladstone Street. “It always felt appropriate for me to do, and with all the recent violence directed toward police officers, I really wanted to help to send a positive message.â€? The 36-year-old gladly exceeded the $200 fundraising goal that each rider must meet, with her contributions and those from Pierandozzi, of the 1100 block of Jackson Street, assisting the overseers, who began the excursion in Center City and concluded it in Atlantic City, to raise $1 million. While the Girard Estate and Lower Moyamensing dwellers loved that the journey will work wonders for their devotion to healthy living, they value far more what it will do for their compassion. “There were definitely some challenges in preparing and then completing the ride,â€? Pierandozzi, 24, said of their involvement. “However, I’d day the people who sign up do so more to help those who really need it than they do to say they overcame the course or made any individual gain.â€? The ladies engaged in incredibly productive preparation throughout the surrounding environs, with Campagna having her bike spoken for when not serving as the co-owner of Flawless Finish Artistry, 1534 Packer Ave., and Pierandozzi giving herself a lesson in diligence when not in the classroom as a special education teacher at George
