In Memoriam: Meeting Mr. Jefferson M ost people remember Sherman Hemsley for the popular characters he played on TV, with George Jefferson being the most noteworthy. I watched the show occasionally, but my best memory of him dates back to the spring of 2001 when he was headlining “Sherman Hemsley & Friends in Atlantic City. After viewing the 90-minute show that featured the actor cracking jokes and talking about growing up at 22nd and Christian streets, I was invited back to his dressing room to meet the comedic star and talk about him movin’ on up and out of South Philly. He was on a tight schedule traveling back and forth from New York City for a Denny’s commercial with none other than his former TV wife, Isabel Sanford (she passed away in 2004). While his publicist was trying to rush him out of the building, Mr. Hemsley insisted on giving me a few minutes of his time. Part of it could have been because he had to postpone our scheduled afternoon meeting as a result of the filming. Being fairly new and raw to the journalism industry, I was honored that a Hollywood actor was willing to take a few minutes out his hectic schedule to just shoot the breeze. Surprisingly, the man who made George Jefferson’s trademark peacock strut famous came across as quiet and reserved compared to the loud and animated character he played on TV. George Jefferson debuted on “All in the Family in 1973, and Hemsley spent two seasons playing Archie Bunker’s neighbor before he got his own spin-off. “The Jeffersons broke television ground by portraying an affluent African-American family. The popular series lasted 11 seasons. “I think it was the timing, Hemsley, who received a 1984 Emmy nod for the role, told me during the 2001 interview. “In Hollywood, green is the color. While entertaining the mostly 50-and-over crowd, he shared stories about his days at Bok Vocational High School, 1901 S. Ninth St., and standing on the corner of 20th and Christian streets singing doo-wop with the a cappella group, The Barons. Of course, he enjoyed an occa-
sional cheesesteak, with Pat’s King of Steaks, 1237 E. Passyunk Ave., and Red’s Hoagies and Groceries, 1900 S. Ninth St., being his favorites. Mr. Hemsley landed other comedic roles on the small screen playing Deacon Frye on “Amen, which was set in Philadelphia and ran from 1986 to ’91. He then provided the voice of Richfield — the prehistoric boss from hell — in “The Dinosaurs, which

aired from ’91 to ‘94. Over the years, he landed appearances on other popular sitcoms including “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and “Family Matters. I learned during our one-on-one encounter that he developed the acting bug at William S. Pierce Middle School, formerly 2400 Christian St., during Fire Prevention Week in which he had to play the blaze itself. The experience literally sparked a fire within him to become an actor. “The first time I jumped on stage, it felt comfortable, Hemsley said. I haven’t spoken to or written about Mr. Hemsley since that night in April 2001, but the brief encounter is something I will always remember. Mr. Hemsley passed away Tuesday in his El Paso, Texas home. He was 74. Rest in peace. SPR —Bill Gelman

man is believed to have gunned down his girlfriend and then killed himself inside his apartment. Paul Aldate, 22, did not report to work July 18, so police were notified to check on his well-being, Officer Jill Russell of the Police Public Affairs Unit said. Officers arrived at his apartment at Gateway Towers, 3600 Gateway Drive, but no one answered the door. A building maintenance person allowed access to the apartment at which time officer found two bodies. Police believe Aldate shot his significant other, Michelle Johnson, 21, of Collingswood, N.J., once in the head after an argument of an unknown nature, turned the gun on himself and fired once at his right temple, Russell said. Both were pronounced dead at 2:30 p.m. The firearm was recovered at the scene.

Forced entry As a man tended to shrubbery near his home, he was mugged and forced into his residence, which then was burglarized. A 55-year-old was trimming plants at the rear of his home on the 900 block of South Sheridan Street at 10:18 a.m. July 18 when an unknown man pointed a gun at him and said, “Give me your money,” Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The man replied that all he had was his cell, which the gunman took and asked where the man lived. The offender forced him inside the dwelling and asked for cash. The resident handed him $500 from an upstairs bedroom and the robber demanded he remain in the hallway while he escaped out the back door in an unknown direction. The suspect was described as black with a medium complexion, age 20 to 24, 130 pounds, thin; having hazel eyes, chin hair; and wearing a black T-shirt and black jeans. Troublesome trespassing A Pennsport firing range and gun retail store was broken into Friday. Police responded to a burglary at Firing Line Inc., 1532 S. Front St., at 2:19 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South
Detective Division said. The parking lot gate was open with its padlock and chain cut and set on the ground. The building’s glass front door also was shattered. SWAT and a K9 unit walked through the business, but did not locate anyone, Tolliver said. The owner then was allowed onto the premises, but did not see any firearms or other items to be missing. Surveillance video indicated that three people wearing masks and gloves were inside. A more detailed description was not available at press time. Spotted in Point Breeze A man from a Passyunk Square robbery two weeks ago has been apprehended. Eric Simpson, 23, of Southwest Philly, along with a still unknown gun wielder, allegedly mugged a 24- and 25-year-old, who put up a fight, at 1:15 a.m. July 12 on the 1300 block of Ellsworth Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. The older man suffered an injury to his forehead as a result of Simpson allegedly punching and choking him before taking his phone. Police recovered surveillance video of the suspects July 13 and distributed still shots to area officers. A 17th District officer spotted Simpson, who fit a description of one of the suspects, on the 1600 block of Wharton Street July 13 and relayed his siting over police radio, but Simpson is believed to have fled on his bicycle, with police losing him on the 1600 block of Federal Street. The same officer again saw Simpson July 17 at 18th and Federal streets. He called for backup and attempted to stop Simpson. Officers pursued the man on foot and apprehended him at 19th and Latona streets. Simpson was charged with two counts of robbery, conspiracy of robbery and simple assault, as well as multiple firearm violations and related charges, according to court records. He served three to six years in jail after pleading guilty in 2007 to a ’06 17th District robbery. The gunman in this month’s heist was described as black, age 18 to 22, 5-foot-9, thin and wearing a white Polo with stripes and shorts. atrons seeking palate-pleasing pizzas brought their A-game — as in appetites — to Penns Landing Caterers July 19 for the South Philly Review’s fourth annual Pizza Olympics. More than 1,000 hungry eaters young and old gathered at 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. for samples of all shapes and sizes and to determine which pies earned scrumptious supremacy for 2012. The enrollees in the YMCA’s day camp warmed up by doing jumping jacks, jogging in place and stretching before turning their attention to Damon Hopkins and other figures from the Delaware chapter of JumpBunch, a Maryland-based organization devoted to sports and fitness for children. Using a basketball court for their endeavors, the eager athletes rotated placement at eight stations, with Ishani Harris delighting in each test of her mettle. “The Olympics are fun and help with my health and fitness,” the 10-year-old Southwest Philadelphian said of her second time as a beneficiary of Johnson’s mission to combat increases in childhood diabetes cases. A three-year camp presence, Ishani enjoys swimming, the YMCA’s staple activity, and numerous games. To stress nourishment’s role, he and his allies supplied water, apples, bananas and oranges, which the youngsters quickly quaffed and consumed in order to sustain their energy for the program’s second half. “Days like this are great,” Johnson said as he watched the future stars ready for the obstacle course, “but it is important that all youngsters get out more, and I feel we need to make gym mandatory in schools so that events like this one don’t seem like rarities.” A colossal exercise ball delighted participants, whose limbs had nine total challenges at a politician’s annual event. News hugs, sped across the hardwood with ease, making the obstacles a nominal hindrance in her mission to imitate her Olympic hero, Jamaican sprinter and three-time gold medalist Usain Bolt. “That was so much fun,” she said. “I loved hearing the cheers.” The applause intensified as her contemporaries gave the event a mini-Olympic feel. The United States will be sending more than 500 competitors to the United Kingdom, according to london2012.com, but one could argue they will not match the fire of their younger sporting companions, who after gliding their sneakers from one end of the floor to the other immediately inquired about the next challenge. After a brief break during which they talked about many topics, including which American will have the best showing in the two-week carnival, they galloped to meet Hopkins as he gave his coworkers a rope for the tug of war finale. Johnson and a quarter of the children faced off against Ishani, who occupied the chief handling position, and another quarter in the opening duel. After a back-and-forth beginning, the latter seized momentum with a couple strong yanks and sent Johnson, who accepted playful ribbing, and his mates to defeat. Another scrum produced a similar power
struggle among the youngest entrants, with one squad’s sudden burst of strength sending a few competitors to the ground in a moment that left everyone chuckling. “Thank you for being great participants and for fostering a team vibe today,” Johnson said as the throng, perhaps yearning for more activity, chatted about the performances and what else it wanted to do to work up a sweat. “I want you to remember you have to take care of yourselves and be mindful of what you feed your bodies and your brains. Healthy kids mean strong families.” After offering “Peace not guns” and “Hugs not drugs” as advice, he posed for a group photo and distributed mini base-, basket, foot- and soccer balls as prizes. “Today was great,” 14-year-old Clementon, N.J., resident Veven Still said. “It helped me to connect with my peers.” The two-year camp goer found the obstacle course the best, though it lacked basketball, his favorite sport and the one in which he hopes the United States, with his obsession LeBron James at the helm, captures the gold medal. “Maybe I’ll be an Olympian,” he said. “Today is for thinking about tomorrow.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. HUMANS OF PHILADELPHIA continued from page 1 and as an invitation to include people we might not normally include,” Putnam said Monday from his home on the 2800 block of South 12th Street. “Therefore, anybody is a potential subject.” The North Carolina native moved to Philadelphia in 1969, settling in South Philly 10 years later. At the time of his departure from the Tar Heel State, he had amassed seven years behind a lens. The subsequent decades have deepened his affinity for snapping architecture, but a desire to upgrade his skills led to an alteration of his pastime. “Someone asked if I had heard about Humans of New York,” Putnam said of originator Brandon Stanton’s photographic census of America’s most populous city. “Once I investigated, I found myself enthralled.” The member of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia obtained Stanton’s permission to manage a “Humans of...” undertaking and determined to further an idea he had entertained last summer. “I was having lunch in Rittenhouse Square and thought ‘I should photograph these people,’” Putnam said. A symposium leader with the San Francisco-based Pachamama Alliance, which assists individuals and companies in promoting social justice and acquiring spiritual fulfillment, he started his assignment, one of at least 50 worldwide efforts, to remind his fellow humans that differences in attire, skin color and other characteristics cannot detract from a celebrated tenet of our condition. “Everybody wants to be happy,” he said of the struggle to juggle responsibilities and the need for levity. “A photo can inspire contentment.” Though he conceded no area can top New York’s diversity, he knew his adopted hometown would offer a plethora of variety, so, armed with a new camera, he commenced his brainchild April 28, quickly surmising an “anything goes” approach should lead him. “I desire spontaneity,” he said as he used his computer to review many of his more than 100 images. “I enjoy discovering the subject, letting whatever catch my eye and not forcing anything.” As Center City bore his original plan, he has made it a chief shooting location. Bearing cards explaining his objective, he refrains from sneaking up on people and always seeks permission to immortalize their faces. “I am drawn to everything,” Putnam said, adding that his clicks serve his quest to have people refrain from judging and concentrate on the beauty and not the strain of being human. He has sought to forge an intricate blend
Street and Pattison Avenue, and Marconi Plaza, Broad Street and Oregon Avenue, as cherished locations. “Friends who’ve moved out of South Philly have e-mailed me to say the Humans of Philadelphia photos give them a new connection to their old turf,” Putnam said. “This is my way, then, of thanking the city for giving me more than four decades of inspiration and for spreading a message of tolerance, curiosity and joy.”
Chuck Putnam has captured more than 100 images of city residents, such as his neighbor “Joe” and his dog Bridget, enjoying their diverse existences. His work is an offshoot of a contemporary photographer’s desire to capture New York’s likewise varied population. S ta f f P h o t o b y J o s e p h M y e r s
of simplicity and complexity in his output, achieving the first through capturing subjects candidly and reinforcing the latter by inviting viewers to adhere to the “A picture is worth a thousand words” adage. “I can appreciate that people might seem apprehensive, but 99 percent of the people I have approached have said ‘Yes,’” Putnam, who uploads shots to the “Humans of Philadelphia” Facebook page, said. His Internet aid, with more than 500 “likes,” is picking up momentum and draws support from his “Humans of...” contem-
poraries, who include representatives from Dubai, London, Paris and Rome. According to Putnam, all involved engage in the display of photographic unity only to hone their craft and to honor their brethren. Numerous treks to Center and Old City, including the latter’s multicultural series of events at Penns Landing, have produced an abundance of shots, but South Philly has proven equally inspirational, with the Italian Market, The Philadelphia Navy Yard and South Street as sectional favorites and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Broad

TOTING A CAREFREE personality and his camera, Putnam, who has a non-Humans of Philadelphia piece in a group show at Old City’s Cafe Twelve, easily ingratiates himself to targets, not by coveting any possible boost to their vanity but through seeking to depict their identity, be it a downtrodden or vibrant one. He takes multiple shots of each subject, with feedback helping him to cement the proper additions to his collection. Though he makes no money off his clicks, he assists people by noting a person’s business or website on his page when applicable. “That delights people but their biggest source of pride comes from knowing their extended human family is witnessing their vitality,” Putnam said. Having passed the century mark, he has isolated a few favorites, preferring many pictures for their aesthetic qualities and others for their quaint natures. Owing to his yearning for simplicity, he acquires only first names through successful pitches and always strives to fuse the shot with something that will add feeling, such as a patch of flowers that complemented the flowing mane of a mother helping her daughter to celebrate her first birthday or the cozy backdrop of a home as he captured a neighbor relaxing with his dog on their porch. “Photography is an art but too often it is lacking a look at intimacy, so to speak,” Putnam said. “If we work to find the depth of each personality, we really find photography’s purpose.” As Humans of Philadelphia has become a welcome side project, he has refrained from considerations of how long he would like to extend it or how many images it might contain. He has gained insights from former subjects and is likely to share ideas when he and a Humans of Paris figure convene later this year. “I have several places on my agenda,” Putnam said. “Every spot and every shot has reaffirmed for me that in this beautiful yet flawed world, we need everybody.” SPR Visit facebook.com/HumansOfPhiladelphia to see Putnam’s work. s a chef in Philadelphia, one should know how to cook with beer. Recently Cooperstown, N.Y.’s Brewery Ommegang decided to put the city’s best to the test with a brew-inspired competition entitled Philly’s Hop Chef, that included executive chef George Sabatino of Stateside, 1536 E. Passyunk Ave. “We had to cook with beer. We had an assigned one and we got to pick one,” Sabatino, of 24th Street and Washington Avenue, said. “We had to cook using two Ommegang ales.” Using the assigned Abbey Dubbel ale to whip up beef cheek lettuce wraps, the chef followed up the main dish with a dessert of Three Philosophers with head to tail cherries. “Ommegang is not typically what I would drink, so that was part of the challenge, as well,” he said. “I like lighter beers, like pilsners and things like that.” Despite his taste preferences, the chef who competed July 10 at University City’s World Cafe Live against six other city talents, including Joe Cicala of Le Virtu, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave.; Jason Cichonski, of Ela, 627 S. Third St.; and Scott Schroeder, of The South Philadelphia Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., and American Sardine Bar, 1801 Federal St.; was able to bring home a win. While Schroeder took the people’s choice, Sabatino won the judges’ hearts and will compete at the Grand Hop Chef competition with the winner of the Washington, D.C. and New York competitions Aug. 4 in Cooperstown, N.Y. “The only other thing I had done was, a couple months ago, the Audrey Claire COOK Open Stove series. I went against Ben [Puchowitz] of [Center City’s] Matyson. For Ben, it was actually the second one he had done

and he called me out. They did a mystery basket and the first ingredient was American cheese — which is pretty messed up,” Sabatino, who beat out his friend in that competition, said. “I look forward to doing it again, to be honest. I have a pretty good track record going.” Locals can try different creations from the contest-winning chef daily at Stateside, the Passyunk Square eatery serving up domestic-only beverages and locallysourced food. Opening its doors in November, Sabatino was eager to see who would come. “I was not sure what to expect,” Sabatino said. “People would come in looking for fried cheese and marinara sauce and leave because we didn’t have it. Or they’d come in and see there was no burger on the menu and leave. But we stayed true to the course.” The course the eatery set and continues to improve on is a seasonal-inspired menu with at least biweekly alterations to reflect what is freshest and to keep things interesting for the devotees. “We do get a lot of people that come from all over the city. More recently I’ve met people in the dining room coming from Delaware and New Jersey,” Sabatino said. “I would say what we are fortunate to have is
neighborhood regulars for sure that eat at the restaurant every week and are always willing to try the new stuff, which is awesome. “People are excited when the menu changes and I post things on Twitter and they come in and get it.” LEAVING HIS HOMETOWN in Central New Jersey eight years ago to come to Philly and attend community college, Sabatino decided to major in music, mostly because he didn’t know what he wanted to do. “I grew up playing in bands since I was very young. It was just a normal teenage thing. I went to school for music, but I wasn’t happy doing it. I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to do,” Sabatino who left community college after a year, said. “I didn’t really see what I was doing with it. I didn’t want to become a music teacher.” As a child, Sabatino only was allowed to use the microwave to make macaroni and cheese because he was “a horrible cook,” he said. However, in his late-teens, he began to prepare meals for friends and decided to try his hand professionally. “I came and went to school for a month. I left when I realized [school] wasn’t for me,” Sabatino said of JNA Institute of Culinary Arts, 1212 S. Broad St. “I was cooking in low-level kitchen bars. Doc Watson’s [Pub in Center City] was my first

cooking job. It was pretty crazy, but I was determined. And I showed up with a notebook everyday and took notes.” The immersive experience was just what Sabatino needed and with hard work and some natural skill, he moved up through the ranks and was fortunate enough to land a job with Marcie Blaine Turney, chef/ owner of multiple restaurants on South 13th Street in Center City. “It took one-and-a-half years cooking around kitchens I wasn’t crazy about before I got a job at Lolita with Marcie Turney, who became my mentor,” Sabatino said. “That’s where I made my bones. I learned how to cook fast and efficiently.” Sabatino spent many years working with Turney, who opened Bindi, where Sabatino learned how to cook Indian food, and Barbuzzo, where he perfected charcuterie and Mediterranean, during that time. “I was really fortunate about that, that every time I was ready to do something new Marcie and [partner] Valerie [Safran] were ready to open a new restaurant,” Sabatino said. “I did Barbuzzo and I got very overwhelmed. I decided to take off from management and I was a line cook at Pub and Kitchen.” During this break Sabatino was able to take stock of his options, knowing his next move would be as the executive chef of a new venture. Stateside’s owners approached
the talented chef and Sabatino was immediately on board with their concept. “With Stateside I liked the idea of doing something small. I would be very much in control of the first one. The bar only had 32 seats when we opened,” he said. “We say it’s contemporary American small plates.” Through the turmoil of opening any venture — Sabatino said the restaurant didn’t have a dishwasher for the first six weeks it was open — the chef and his team have coalesced and earned themselves a loyal following that is rapidly expanding. As the restaurant continues its own growth, including current plans to get licensed to serve through the windows, Sabatino wants locals to know they can count on a good drink and an innovative bite any day of the week. “I think at Stateside, what we’re doing, it’s deceptively simple food. There is something for everyone,” he said. “But what’s more important is the cooking we are doing is very honest and from our heart and it’s very interesting in a way. “We’re trying to do something that’s very different in South Philadelphia and even if it’s just for small plates and an awesome whiskey at the bar, people should come on in.” SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/lifestyles.

The crusader’s final caper
Bane (Tom Hardy), from left, goes head-to-head with Batman (Christian Bale) in the third and final installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

A
nd so, the final chapter of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy has landed. Don’t be alarmed if the ground isn’t shaking beneath your feet. Closing out what started with “Batman Begins” and peaked with “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises” may be the ending of the super-est superhero saga, but it’s not quite the whopping event film so many were hoping for. Nolan, a master of grand spectacle with a mind for broody themes, keeps his ambitions high in both scale and resonance, delivering a nearly three-hour epic that speaks directly to our own unbalanced culture and economy. But whereas “The Dark Knight” invited dissertations on its more subtle Gotham-City-as-our-corruptworld conceit, its follow-up is a continuous on-the-nose affair. The only things missing are the “POW!” effects bubbles. The story picks up eight years after the events of the previous film, with Gotham prospering in the wake of Batman (Christian Bale) taking the fall for the crimes of Harvey Dent, who’s been hoisted up as a false idol for people in need of hope. Enter Bane (Tom Hardy), a burly villain whose shadowy associations bookend the trilogy, and whose anarchic plans turn the city’s working class into its own Occupy movement. Caught between revolutionaries and the moral upright is slinky Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman (Anne Hathaway), a jewel thief with a conscience to match her sticky fingers. Though blessed with Nolan’s knack for widescreen urban awe (he’s fast becoming the Terrence Malick of metal and glass), “The Dark Knight Rises” unfolds with a rather workaday spirit, and while
it’s plenty dark, it’s lacking in gray area to keep the mind stewing. The fault lies in the script by Nolan and brother Jonathan, who struggle with the delicate balance of real-world weight and comic-book levity, adding one-liners and in-jokes that clash with what’s at stake. The movie’s key triumph is its focus on frailty, as never before has a superhero been rendered with such aching humanity. Far from impervious, Batman is, after all, just a man, making his hard-won rise to gallantry all the more affecting.

t’s probably happened to you, steering is when you’re in an accident and you call your insurance company and they tell you where you have to get your car repaired. Some other examples are when the Insurance company says they cannot guarantee the repairs from a certain shop, or that you will have to pay the difference in labor rates. These are all forms of steering and they are all illegal. Steering has existed since the beginning of the auto insurance industry and, while illegal, it may be here to stay unless something is done to change the awareness, standards within the industry and the laws that govern their behavior. Steering hurts both the shops and the customer, and if there is going to be progression in this industry, a solution must be found and regulations must be enforced. Good body shops are being forced out of business. Car owners are receiving sub par parts and service. A solution would benefit the entire industry and its customers. … Most insurers today use what are called DRP’s, or Direct Repair Providers. These are shops not owned by the insurers, but shops that agreed to provide service to these insurers. So what does this mean for the vehicle owner? The Auto Body Association said insurers continue
to illegally steer customers and pay inadequate labor rates to body shops. Insurers skirt the language in the law and steer to save money. They get a cheaper repair at the consumer’s expense. The shops may cut corners and make greater use of inferior aftermarket parts. They say the shops may rush a repair job because if it takes longer than what an insurer specifies, the shop may have to foot the bill for the customer’s additional rental car costs. Steering is anti-consumer, anti-competitive and anti-car safety because it rewards the insurance companies through preferred body shops but, in effect, deprives consumers of their choice. It can even be dangerous. … Creating awareness is the only solution to the problem. We have to let car owners know that they do have a choice when it comes to who is repairing their car. The aggressive “recommendation” practices won’t intimidate or influence the car owner if they are aware that the practice is illegal, and by allowing the insurance company to influence their decision, they are partaking in illegal practices that can ultimately hurt the car owner. If you have any questions, give me a call and I’d be happy to assist you, 215-9254520. ■ Nigro’s Auto Body is located at 939 Washington Ave in South Philly.

Going above and beyond I
By Jason Krapf
n the near future, the collision repair community could be thanking Domenic Nigro, co-owner of Philadelphiabased Nigro’s Auto Body Repair for fewer vehicle collisions. “Thank someone for fewer work opportunities,” you may ask? In this case, yes. While efforts like these may seem like community service efforts that shops work on when they can, they’re at the heart of what makes this business a Top Shop in the country as named by Auto Body Repair News. Much about Nigro’s is unusual. The shop actually traces its origins to Italy and the European method of repairing vehicles, which Nigro says outpaces much of the technology used in America. Coowner and father of Domenic, Aniello Nigro trained and worked in Florence, Italy, before coming to Philadelphia to open the shop in 1984. Domenic took over much of the business end of the operation in 1996. He is
the shop’s sole estimator and oversees a business where he, his father and the shop’s other employees (two additional techs and one painter) hold a number of certifications and have received every kind of training. The shop performs metal, fiberglass and aluminum work and spends much of its time renovating classic cars, including Bentleys, though it’s comfortable working on Chevrolets, Hondas and Fords. Regardless of vehicle type, Nigro says each is given the same careful attention. So thorough is the shop with its work, says Nigro, that it’s never had to redo any of its work. In almost 30 years, not one vehicle has had to come back, he said. Despite these accomplishments, Nigro says the focus of his business is helping people. “I’m tired of cars. I don’t like them anymore,” he jokes. “I like people.” This is why he and the shop devote so much of their time to the Philadelphia community and why Nigro is working hard to change the repair community.
On the first Tuesday of every month, Nigro’s, with the help of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, hosts a SAFE KIDS event where technicians properly install car seats (Nigro says he attended car seat installation training that required four, eight-hour days of training). The shop hosts Ladies Night events where it teaches female attendees how to change tires, check fluids, understand how brakes and other systems work, and what to do if they’re ever in an accident. More recently, they started hosting safety events for school children, in a partnership with the Police and Fire departments. At its events, Nigro’s hosts a lemonade stand to raise money for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation. The shop also installs vehicle hand controls for the handicapped, with a portion of the purchase and installation fees going to the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. They’re going high tech in their latest endeavors, which include marketing Smartphone apps. Available free of
charge is Nigro’s Auto Body Assistance for Droid, Blackberry and iPhone devices. This app assists motorists who have been in an accident. It helps produce accident records (photos and recordings of witness accounts) and can contact emergency responders and contacts. After two years of contacting members of Philadelphia’s City Council, he’s finally managed to arrange meetings with council members to discuss his concerns over the state of the auto repair industry in Philadelphia. While such efforts may not seem significant in light of the challenges repairers face nationwide, don’t discount what he may accomplish. Nigro’s already has proven just how much one repairer and one small shop can do. “We’re the shop that fights for you, we stand up against the insurance company, we don’t compromise the integrity of the care.” ■ Nigro’s is located at 10th and Washington (www.nigrosautobody.com)

.L. Grigg, founder of St. Louis’ Howdy Corp., created a bubbly lemon-lime-flavored soda in 1929. Originally dubbed Bib-Label Lithiated Lemon-Lime Soda, 7-UP became a popular drink and then recipe ingredient. The carbonated beverage is featured in Carol Neher’s 7-UP Cake. The resident of the 2200 block of South Front Street adds the liquid, which is believed to have become an alternative to water to make cakes lighter and more airy, to her vanilla cake. SPR

We ordered sautéed spinach and bok choy ($3 each) from the a la carte menu simply because we like our vegetables. A slice of rich chocolate cake and a slice of lemon curd cake completed one of the tastiest meals I’ve enjoyed in weeks. To top it off, service is so pleasant and professional because our servers left us to our conversation while watching the table. University City Dining Days ends tonight. bread was the perfect utensil for sopping up the tasty sauce. Fried calamari ($10) has become so ubiquitous few restaurants prepare it well. This version did not disappoint. A large mound of fresh squid rings were lightly dusted with seasoned flour and flash-fried to a light, golden brown. A ramekin of spicy/sweet dipping sauce was the perfect foil for this delicious starter. Since Grill Fish Café has Vietnamese touches, each guest is given the choice of flatware and black easy-to-hold plastic chopsticks. I noticed many of the patrons went the Asian route to enjoy their dinner. Edward ordered the grilled salmon ($16) after much debate about the leg of lamb. There had to have been at least eight ounces of immaculately fresh center cut, thick fillet of salmon nestled atop a bed of sautéed garlic spinach. The fish was tasty, moist and meaty. It was one of the finest salmon entrées we’ve tasted in a long time. The sauce imparted an Asian twist since it was prepared with ginger, soy sauce and fragrant mint. A mound of perfectly steamed jasmine rice came with his dinner. I went the French/Vietnamese route with mixed seafood ($18), which would have won approval in the South of France. The bowl was filled with bits of rich salmon, squid, mussels, shrimp and clams in a homemade broth spiked with sake. Each fish was perfectly cooked enhanced by the tasty soup that I enjoyed with an Asian por-

fter several weeks of enduring mediocre food, I am pleased to report I’ve found a spot worth visiting. A few weeks ago, I received a brochure focusing on University City Dining Days. A number of restaurants were taking part including Grill Fish Café, a charming place in a bustling neighborhood. Edward and I have never been to the area around 47th and Warrington. Although I lived at 42nd and Spruce during my graduate school days, I more-or-less stayed within a few blocks of my home. This multi-cultural area was a breath of fresh air. It is brimming with restaurants, groceries and independently-owned shops. On the night we dined at Grill Fish Café, the streets were filled with people of all ages delighting in a joyful carnival atmosphere. Grill Fish Café is a moderately-priced restaurant with good-sized portions of tasty freshly prepared dishes served by a delightful staff. One of its signature cocktails is a Bombay Sapphire martini ($9). Since University City Dining Days was in full swing, the restaurant offered three courses for $25. Our waiter told us the portions were the same size as the regular menu. The garlic shrimp ($12) contained a bit of bite; were sautéed with onions, peppers, the right touch of chili peppers; and served in a spicy lemon sauce. There must have been at least eight of these beauties in the bowl. A large slice of good French

world Oscar-nominated writer/director Nora Ephron recently passed away, but her passion for food and lm has left a lasting impression with many of her fans. By Phyllis Stein-Novack Food Columnist

n a cold January day last year, I caught a dreadful cold from my darling husband Edward. After breakfast, I decided a Nora Ephron movie marathon was in order. Clad in my favorite cotton, flannel sickie nightgown with colorful teddy bears on it, warm socks and pink slippers, and with a big box of tissues nearby, I settled into my favorite chair, put my feet up and went through my DVR. I watched “Sleepless in Seattle,” “You’ve Got Mail” and “Julie and Julia.” Like everyone else in the universe, I was shocked and saddened to learn of Ephron’s death last month at the age of 71. She succumbed to pneumonia brought on by a rare form of leukemia. Nora was a talented, witty and funny writer whom people called the Dorothy Parker of her generation, only funnier. She loved New York City, cooking, eating, friendship and gossiping. I’ve seen all of her films and have read her books and magazine essays. I loved her musings in The Huffington Post, especially the culinary ones. Several years ago, she posted a query about cabbage strudel. She wanted the recipe. Nora confessed she only uses Pepperidge Farm herb crushed stuffing mix with the blue stripe on the top of the bag for
her Thanksgiving dinner. "Gee," I thought to myself. "Nora does not make stuffing from scratch. I use the same mix." I felt a close sisterhood to her because although we never met, I feel I knew her. Food and wine play an important role in her films. In “Sleepless in Seattle,” Meg Ryan eats lettuce and tomato on whole wheat and orders tea to go “with the bag out” while Tom Hanks downs a burger with Rob Reiner at the Pike Place Market and orders Absolute on the rocks. Coffee shops and a salute to Zabar’s take center stage in “You’ve Got Mail.” Brinkley, Hanks’ dog, eats pizza and bagels off the street, Ryan can wield a carving set like a professional chef when confronted with a turkey and she severely chastises Hanks for scraping every bit of caviar off the egg salad mold. Much of “Julie and Julia” takes place in my beloved Paris. Sole Meunierre, beurre blanc, beef bourguignon, a perfect tarte tatin, a rich chocolate cake, steamed lobsters and a boned duck appear in the film. “When Harry Met Sally” is another favorite. Ryan drives the waitress nuts about salad dressing on the side, vanilla or strawberry ice cream and apple pie in a Jewish deli. She riotously fakes an orgasm surrounded by corned beef on rye as Estelle Reiner says “I’ll have what she’s having.” In life, I will always have what Nora is having. It is eerie that on the day she died, I wandered into a supermarket and bought two bags of Pepperidge Farm herb crushed stuffing mix.
■ Cucumber Salad ■
Ingredients:
6 Israeli cucumbers, peeled and thinlysliced 1/2 of a large sweet onion, thinly-sliced Kosher salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste Small handful of Italian parsley leaves, snipped with a scissors 1/4 cup of extra-virgin olive oil 4 tablespoons of vinegar of choice
Directions: Place all of the ingredients in a large bowl and gently mix to blend well. Cover and refrigerate for at least one hour. Serves four.
■ The Perfect Egg Salad ■ Sandwich Ingredients:
8 hard-cooked, extra-large eggs 1 large stalk of celery, finely chopped Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1-1/2 teaspoons of Hellmann’s mayonnaise Iceberg lettuce leaves Jewish rye from the deli
Directions: Place the eggs in a pot. Cover with cold water, bring to a rapid boil, lower to simmer and cook for exactly 17 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, place the eggs in a large bowl filled with ice to cool.
Peel the eggs. Slice them using an egg slicer. Break the eggs apart and place them in a container. Add the celery. Sprinkle the mixture with the salt and pepper and add one heaping teaspoon of the mayonnaise. Mix well before adding in the remaining mayonnaise. If you make sandwiches Philly style, smear a little mayonnaise on one side of each slice. Spread the egg salad on one side slice, top with the lettuce leaves and close the sandwich. Slice in half. Serve with potato chips and kosher pickles. Makes four sandwiches. Note from Phyllis: Nora preferred extra hard-cooked egg yolk in her egg salad. Simply hard cook 10 eggs and give the hard-cooked egg whites to the dog.
■ The Perfect Root Beer Float ■ Ingredients: Iced cold Hires root beer 2 generous scoops of Bassetts vanilla ice cream Whipped cream
Directions: Pour enough of the root beer to come up a bit more than halfway in a beer pint glass. Add the ice cream. Top with the whipped cream. Makes one root beer float. SPR Comment on this restaurant or review at southphillyreview.com/food-and-drink/reviews.

Joe Navek You’ve been gone three months already. I miss you everyday . My heart is broken. You’ve accomplished so much in your life, in spite of your tragic childhood. We will always be proud of you. You showed us anything is possible, if you believe it. But in the end I couldn’t save you. Happy “belated” Daddy’s Day. You were a wonderful daddy to Anthony, your love was unconditional. You shared a special bond, only a dad and son could have.

“Marian Anderson has been like a home to me,” he said of the South of South site where he received his nickname after an observer’s comment on his potent fists spawned an irresistible alliterative title. “I always want South Philly to be proud of me.” The area gained a chance to laud him April 16, ’10, when he scored a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Tyrese Hendrix, which secured for him the vacant North American Boxing Organization’s lightweight title. He suffered his lone setback in his initial defense, becoming a technical knockout victim of John Molina July 9, ’10. Though the 11-round defeat cost him his unblemished tally, Lundy, who battled an illness during the encounter, took a vital lesson from the summer night. “It reminded me that no matter what, I will fight until I have given my all,” he said. He rebounded in his next bout and used another unanimous decision to thwart Patrick Lopez April 1, ’01 and snare the vacant NABF lightweight title at Connecticut’s Foxwoods Resort, also the site of his most recent clash, March 30’s unanimous decision toppling of Dannie Williams. “My career is in line with where I had thought it would be this many years in,” Lundy, who has prided himself on challenging and pummeling solid punchers, continued on next page

en-year ring veteran Henry “Hammerin’ Hank” Lundy unleashes powerful punches for more than prodigious purses. “I’m looking to show children who engage in sports that they can go from being a ’hood MVP to becoming a world champion,” the 28-year-old pugilist said Friday. The native of 17th and Dickinson streets will continue to promote diligence tomorrow at Atlantic City’s Resorts Casino Hotel, where he will make the third defense of his North American Boxing Federation lightweight title against Raymundo Beltran. If he downs the underdog, Lundy, whom the World Boxing Council has ranked as its top lightweight fighter, will likely land a shot at the governing body’s appropriate crown, a chief step in his quest to add excitement to his vocation. “I am devoted to hard work and determination,” the Point Breeze product said of his attraction to lacing up gloves and pitting his strength against an opponent’s might. “First and foremost, my goals are to maintain my hunger and to inspire passion for self-belief.” A 135-pound southpaw, Lundy turned professional in 2006 after a three-year amateur career that yielded a 65-5 record,
the ’03 Pennsylvania Golden Gloves prize and the ’05 National Golden Gloves silver medal. His dominance has not waned, as he carries a 22-1-1 record ahead of his first Atlantic City bout and second in the Garden State. His mark includes 11 knockouts, but breaking down foes’ defenses provides only a secondary rush. “I love giving my fans a show,” the 5-foot-7 brawler, whose six Pennsylvania contests include a Sept. ’09 victory at the Yesha Center, 2301 Snyder Ave., said. “However, knowing I have a family to support inspires me most.” Father to 11-year-old Jaquan, 9-yearold Aniyah, 7-year-old Amari, 5-year-old Adriana, and 3-year-old Amarah, Lundy realizes the significance of each payout and knows Beltran, the former WBC Continental Americas super featherweight champion, will likewise be seeking the winner’s share for his clan. “I know he is hungry, and my job is to keep him feeling that hunger by beating him,” he said of his 25-6 opponent. So that his brood emerges as the happier one, Lundy has been following a training schedule devoid of breaks and abounding with intensity. He splits time between the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 744 S. 17th St., and West Philadelphia’s Shepard Recreation Center, which his grandfather, Mitch Allen, oversees, but, family aside, he esteems the former location more.
The South Philadelphia Hurricanes Football Program will have registration camp for upcoming season 6 to 8 p.m. weekday at Smith Playground, 24th and Jackson streets. Program also is seeking coaches. Contact Terry Bennett, 215-4397653 or terancebennett@hotmail.com.

THE CHAMPION BEGAN his boxing bludgeonings at 18, besting a bully who had dubbed him “Little Tyson” while a student at Southwest Philadelphia’s John Bartram High School. Before rocking chins and wobbling legs, he enjoyed football. Extending his love beyond Bartram’s gridiron, he watched late night college games and upon their completion caught fights, including ones with former light-, welter- and middleweight legend “Sugar” Shane Mosley. He soon became a gym fixture, fixating on distinguishing himself as a tireless figure to the point of taking on multiple sparring partners at one time. “I get my mentality from my football background,” Lundy said of shunning fear and pursuing prominence. “I was always on the field with big guys and wanted to make them feel inferior.” His progression has proven so steady that Lundy, like Mosley before him, has become a main event staple in the ESPN family, with ESPN2’s “Friday Night Fights” to air his Beltran date at 10 p.m. “I have definitely enjoyed the exposure because I feel I am among the few boxers
to bring excitement when in the ring,” Lundy said. “As for the fight against Beltran, I’m going to be ‘Hammerin’ Hank,’ which means I am going to be a problem.” Putting himself in shape has never posed difficulty for the titleholder, who counts a former trainer of middleweight great Bernard Hopkins, who last year at age 46 became the oldest boxer to capture a world title, among his helpers. His preparation nearly complete, he is all but guaranteeing a thumping of Beltran and is hoping to unify titles by taking on and vanquishing either Molina or WBC lightweight champion Antonio DeMarco, who will meet in September. While obtaining success in the ring, Lundy is also pondering placing a ring on fiancée China Carroll. “It will come right after I unify the belts,” the confident fighter said. Having heard that many observers consider him a throwback fighter akin to Joe Frazier, Lundy knows his acclaim can be even grander. “I feel accomplished and have said before that I’m going to be great,” he said. “That means more than boxing, though. It means meshing boxing and regular life.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. Comment at southphillyreview.com/sports/features.

PRAYERS
prayer to the blessed virgin
(never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you.
K.G.
st. jude novena
May the Sacred heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world, now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. St. Jude, worker of Miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, helper of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer 9 times a day for eight days, by the 8th day your prayers will be answered. Publication must be promised. Thank you St. Jude.
