It’s a fairly quiet trip on the subway from City Hall to AT&T Station for most delegates. There’s some grumbles about the heat, “I’m

Many delegates looked around to read protest signs from the few demonstrators who weren’t already with their protest groups. f we find ourselves blessed with good fortune, many of us will have opportunities to catch our favorite singers and/or groups in concert, with an additional delight being a seat close to the action. Two weeks ago today, Damian MonteCarlo fared far better than a conventional devotee, as the longtime allegiance holder for Guns N’ Roses joined his MACH22 peers in opening for the rock royals at Lincoln Financial Field, 1020 Pattison Ave. “I’m still at a loss for words, the
38-year-old resident of the 2600 block of South Sartain Street said of the July 14 experience made possible through his rock outfit’s triumph in a 93.3 WMMR Philadelphia contest. “It all came full circle for me because of my admiration for Guns N’ Roses, and I’m always going to think of that night as proof that hard work can really pay off. The Lower Moyamensing dweller and his mates took to the stage roughly two hours before the main attraction made its local Not in This Lifetime tour stop. Having devised a set list, MonteCarlo reveled in the occasion, especially when the quintet was able to play for
a tad longer than its original 20-minute allotment. “When I went out there, I had so much energy and excitement racing through me, the drummer said of his eagerness to excel. “I think we played an awesome set, and I can definitely say that we hit them hard. In applying its aptitude before its largest crowd, with MonteCarlo noting that as many as 10,000 people caught its act, MACH22 took a huge step toward accumulating more followers. His inspections of Facebook have bred evidence of increasing adulation, but he knows that as late summer and fall approach,

To our Readers: With this evening’s affairs capping the Democratic National Convention, we will quickly find ourselves inundated with even more means from Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton to secure our votes. To those who plan to back another candidate, I must say that I slightly envy you, as even though your choices will not capture the White House, they will not leave us absolutely exhausted through television spots and speeches (I know these are necessary evils, obviously, and I will certainly be casting my vote for one of the major party candidates, but these types of outreach will not sway me.) I am looking forward to the debates, with the first to occur Sept. 26 at Hofstra University. Let’s see these two intense personalities go blow for blow, as I do not foresee, nor should you, that either will don kid gloves. I expect some great fall theater from these two.
Whose approach will prove more powerful? Let the real pageantry begin! Joseph Myers South Philly Review editor

To the Editor: Dear Domenick Lazzaro Jr., Thanks for taking the time to respond to my July 7 column “America the Great through your letter, “Liberal allegiance, in the July 21st South Philly Review. Just for the record, I have voted for various Republican candidates both on the local and national level (yes, even for President). Bern marks To the Editor: Bernie Sanders was a brief light at the end of the a tunnel. I believe the tunnel is getting longer because Ralph Nader delivered the same message years ago. Yes, Super PAC kickback politics is still untouchable. Sanders mentioned at least 50 times the dangers of Super PAC money, how he raised millions through thousands of individuals’ average $27 dollar contributions, how Super PAC big money represents large corporations and not the common man. So, after all of that, what did he do? He backed Hillary Clinton, the Super PAC queen. I see a big opening for The Donald. He’s probably hiding his income tax information because of his financial dealings. Now he can attack Sanders and Clinton for not being open and honest about this. We now have the best government that money can buy. We need a government paid for by all of the people’s tax dollars to represent all of this nation, not just the rich. This could be a giant step forward for democracy. Gilbert Lettieri South Philadelphia

A man taking his dog for an early a.m. stroll ended up assaulted in Whitman. The complainant told police he had been walking along the 400 block of Jackson Street at around 2:30 July 16 when three unknown figures approached him from behind. The lead aggressor grabbed him by his shoulder, turned him around, and punched him under the right eye, threatening to pull out a gun if the complainant did not part with his belongings, Detective Danielle Tolliver, of South Detective Division, said. The victim put his hands up, allowing the eager criminal to remove from his pockets $40, identification, and a key before he and his peers fled westbound on Jackson Street. He described the offenders as black, with the first being 5-foot-11 and 150 pounds; having a dark complexion and a thin build; being clean-shaven; and wearing a black shirt and dark shorts; the second as 6 foot and 200 pounds; having a dark complexion and a muscular build; being clean-shaven; and wearing blue jeans shorts; and the third as 5-foot-7 and 200 pounds; having a dark complexion and a chubby build; being clean-shaven; and wearing red Michael Jordan basketball shorts. Responding to a robbery-in-progress call at 4:28 a.m. July 17, police reported to the 2100 block of South Seventh Street and learned from the complainant that he had been walking on Seventh Street near Snyder Avenue when an unknown male approached him. The aggressor placed his hand on the complainant’s back, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said, and yanked his gold chain, with a $700 value, from his neck before punching his prey in the head. The victim, who suffered no serious injury, described the suspect as black, 25 to 30 years old; having scruffy facial hair; walking with a limp; and riding on a bicycle

knows we are dealing with enough dilemmas in contemplating Trump’s and Clinton’s foibles. 7) An appreciation for our history: I have known people who LOVE to stigmatize South Philly (I thank them, as they have inspired an upcoming South Philly 10 column), and, thankfully, their counterparts, those who love our location for its rich history, outnumber them. Thanks to 17 different neighborhoods, South Philly swells with pride over its contributions to the nation and the world, and all office seekers in my hypothetical alteration of our governing system must respect every bit of our backgrounds. 6) A South Philly upbringing: And what better way to generate admiration for our turf than to have a South Philly lineage? A native would certainly have our best interests in mind at all times and would surely take on our most pressing problems with a no-nonsense attitude that would melt the heart of even the biggest cynic. 5) A strong sense of humor: I have met my share of crabby South Philadelphians, often being bold enough to inquire what has rendered them so. I have also fraternized with legions of comedians, both paid and unpaid, and love knowing that so many funny people reside within our boundaries. I would love for South Philly’s president to have a comedic constitution that would help him or her to be the originator and not the butt of some memorable jokes. 4) A robust religious identity: I know that “religious has become a word that gives people pause, but I would like for our South Philly president to have a strong allegiance to his or her faith and appreciation for a given system’s tenets. I would also expect for her/him to have curiosity and respect for other religions and an awareness of the power of appeals to a higher power. 3) A very open mind: I often feel sorry for politicians, or at least those campaigning for the presidency or roles in large cities, because their tasks seem so daunting. With thousands of potential critics residing in row homes, this imaginary guide must want to maintain an open mind, never pandering to certain groups or organizations in search of status. He or she should want to hear as many ideas as possible and not diminish the voice of those who secured the victory party. 2) A well-developed sense of practicality: We all know that Trump and Clinton do not stand a chance of following through on every promise, and I would love for the president of South Philly to have a well-developed sense of just how far a vow can go. South Philadelphians have long memories, so a loose comprehension of being true to one’s word would result in a few not-so-pleasant utterances from the masses. 1) A willingness to admit mistakes: Has anyone else determined that most office seekers are complete narcissists? How I long for someone to say that he or she made a mistake and intends to use the gaffe as motivation to be a better leader. A guy can dream, can’t he? oday marks the end of the Democratic National Convention, meaning that, come late this evening, millions of Americans, with last week’s Cleveland-situated Republican National Convention included, will have spent huge chunks of time listening to plenty of platitudes and, one hopes, a few concrete plans. I cannot imagine the stress that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton feel in striving to convince a majority of voters what the better direction will be for this country. I started to think Dbout our concise expanse and began to ponder what qualities a candidate would need to have to carry his or her campaign to victory if South Philly were a country. Yes, I know our state has a governor and our city employs a mayor, but what if only our territory could have an elected leader? Here then, with apologies to those who have received the title “The Mayor of South Philly, are characteristics that “The President of South Philly would need to nurture. 10) A diverse appetite: For more than a century, South Philly has generated praise as a haven for lovers of Italian cuisine. While many individuals, including yours truly, could live on such provisions, I would expect our leader to have a well-developed interest in various foods. Not only would this benefit his or her popularity, but other numbers would likely benefit, too, including the individual’s cholesterol count if the diet is a health-conscious one. 9) A stellar family: Many elements define life in South Philly, with a strong affinity for family life being one of the most endearing. Any vote seeker would need to be tight with his or her relatives and to have begun to extend the family name by giving us an appealing better half to whom we can relate and an adorable child or precocious children to wish well. 8) An essentially controversy-free past: Hey, nobody is perfect, and it seems to me that South Philadelphians love those who have battled back from harrowing circumstances to make something of themselves. I tend to think, though, that such a tale of redemption would not make for a great candidate, as I believe the initial head of this fictitious scenario could serve us well minus any major missteps to his or her name. from Democracy Spring. Each time a credentialed group, the men mostly in suits or J.Crew-ish casual Friday-wear and the women in matching suits or polyester dresses, walked by on the restricted access side of the fence, the demonstrators, mostly in sweat drenched T-shirts and shorts, would erupt in chats, “Not for sale. Not for sale. The contrast was a striking one, as some of the credentialed acknowledged the crowd, some opened up their phone cameras, but many kept their heads straight and seemingly ignored the fact that hundreds on the other side of the fence were chanting at them: “Show me what democracy looks like. This is what democracy looks like “I am here protesting the injustices of our government, Jeff, who came to the protests from California, said. He was handing out roses in the grass when he came over to talk. “I came here because I have a two-year old and a five-year-old, little girls, that I can’t look in their eyes and tell them we’re leaving them the best planet that we can leave them. The police have been really,
really great. The people have been amazing, they’re full of love. I’m hoping more eyes will be open to the truth that is the corrupt government and the greed that is killing our planet at a very fast rate. We don’t have another 30 years, we don’t, we have to change it now. A union heavy equipment operator, Jeff explained that the recent email leak scandal within the Democratic party has solidified his stance. “A year ago, I was Bernie or Bust and then after all the apparent fraud and possible fraud and the WikiLeaks, and all the stuff right now that may or may not be true, that was enough for me to decide that the Democratic party that I’ve always been in is not my home. I’ve always voted Democrat because that’s what I’ve been told to do, but I won’t out of fear ever again. An impromptu march by one of the Christian groups arose down the middle of Broad Street. “We need to be saved, members voiced. It was met met with other protesters joining in to have their say on the matter.
“Shut the f--- up. With a variety of opposing messages all converging together (Bernie shirts could easily have been confused with the pro-Trump “Socialism Sucks tees others were wearing), there was bound to be some exchanges. A few grew heated. Second Amendment supporters, a group of six middle-aged white men, carrying “Blue Lives Matter posters, were confronted by a group of African-American college-aged girls, for a debate/conversation that lasted about 10 minutes. One of the women in that discussion was Julie, a Temple University student doing research work, rather than protesting, at the demonstrations. She thought more discourse between the divergent groups could be a good thing. “With one of the guys, it went really well, he understood what we were saying about the logic behind Black Lives Matter, she said. “The other didn’t really want to hear it. He wasn’t very open to understanding what his own sign meant. I hope to see a lot more discourse. I think that’s how you get to solutions. Even the discussion I just had with that gentleman

continued from page 1 just a few feet, and a fence, away. Still the chaos seemed more like a spectator sport, until one turn beyond the walls of the subway station, where things got a little crazy. Passengers were met with a fleet of heavily armored motorcycle police and what appeared to be Secret Service security in traditionally non-police suits. If you weren’t credentialed when you reached this point out of the subway station, you were pretty much chopped liver. “Get to the side a man all in black sporting a bulletproof vest and making his already large frame even more intimidating, shouted. “What side, though? It was all happening so quickly with so many people in front and behind, it was hard not just to stand paralyzed. “No credentials. Get to the side he commanded with a louder bark and a shove to the air. You soon realize that if you didn’t listen, and listen fast, something bad was going to happen. After an intimidating start, and with the credentialed peeps safely separated from the sweatier masses, a line of smiling Philadelphia police greeted protesters with, “Have a great time, like a Dave & Buster’s hostess, while creating a human barrier preventing anyone from going any other way than out to Broad Street. And then you were just immersed in people — a sea of people. If the convention looked like a Rolling Stones concert, outside the Wells Fargo was the Phish show: patchouli, tie dye, weed aroma, dreads, and fringe. But there were plenty of nonhippy/hipsters, too. Although the vast majority of protestors were white, their ages ran the gamut, from toddlers riding in carts decked out with Bernie slogans to retirees. But that’s not to say there was no diversity. Black Lives Matter, Black Men for Bernie, Latinos for Sanders, Haitians against Obama were all represented, with even a few international visitors. A family from Tel Aviv came to see how much better the “Left gets treated in their estimation than back home in Israel. Like a school cafeteria, the groups had somehow remained in separate areas of the protest region on Broad Street. You had your Christian preachers on the far end against the temporary fencing at Pattison Avenue, peace demonstrators sitting in the grass, and the Bernie Sanders protesters hanging mostly against the fencing that lined AT&T Station, with a large showing

PROTESTS continued from page 9 ended with a new revelation for him. And I think if everybody could engage in those kind of discussions, things would move a lot faster toward the right direction. For his part, Tim, the man in the debate, did not want to discuss it afterward. “I’m not giving any interviews, he said. “She was just making a point that they weren’t exclusively saying Black Lives Matter, I think we disagree with that. But for the most part, this was a Bernie protest. Lynn, a teacher from Illinois came to the protest to urge the delegates to reconsider their nomination. Starting to cry at the fence, she explained her reasoning. “I see kids growing up with asthma because their air is so dirty, I see kids that come to school hungry. Hillary is not going to change anything, she is part of the system that is currently in place, she’s part of the status quo, they’ve already been in office, they didn’t help people, they hurt people, they threw more people into poverty. I hope that it does change because these delegates are representing democracy not just the Democratic party. The Democratic party cheated during this election season, we all know that. They broke their own rules. Wiping away tears, she said her experiences at the protests over the last few days had been positive. “Everything has been peaceful, everyone has been taking care of each other. I was walking around yesterday passing out water to people, she stated. “These are people that care about the quality of life beyond their own. SPR

Status cymbals A Lower Moyamensing-based drummer and his rock band have kept the beat as burgeoning performers, including gaining recent renown in opening for Guns N’ Roses. ŽÊ0g 8]aS^V ;gS`a Review Editor

f we find ourselves blessed with good fortune, many of us will have opportunities to catch our favorite singers and/or groups in concert, with an additional delight being a seat close to the action.
In applying its aptitude before its largest crowd, with MonteCarlo noting that as many as 10,000 people caught the act, MACH22 took a huge step toward accumulating more followers. His inspections of Facebook have bred evidence of increasing adulation, but he knows that as late summer and fall ap-

proach, resting on laurels would throw their momentum into discord. “Beyond Lincoln Financial Field, we definitely have to double our efforts, MonteCarlo said. “I’ve been at it with MACH22 for four years now, and the great songs and the excellent musicianship make me so proud to be with these guys. We believe that bigger things are ahead for us, so we need to do the legwork to keep getting better and making more connections. Those urges to enhance their reputation as consummate professionals will result in the recording of a single by the end of the summer and the release of an extended play come the fall, both moves that are in line with MonteCarlo’s desire to bring MACH22’s sound “to the masses. “It’s an interesting business, to say the least, the percussionist pronounced. “I’ve been in it long enough to know you have to be your biggest advocate and your most dedicated supporter. I’m with great people right now, so that makes everything that much more compelling to chase. THE NATIVE OF the 2800 block of South Mar-
vine Street gravitated toward music by age 4, with the walls of uncle Sal LaBruna’s basement studio space serving as his initial audience. Loving the freedom that drumming allowed him, he found the pulse of his pursuit to be an incredible motivator and once he turned 11, a certain hard rock band proved pivotal in his formation as a musician. “I discovered Guns N’ Roses on MTV, and I really wanted to become immersed, MonteCarlo said, noting that he never looked at music as a hobby when a child and has never deemed it a job as an adult, preferring to tab it “a way of life. “I wanted to find a band immediately because I had this feeling that I shouldn’t suppress this part of my soul. Holding that a drummer is “the conductor of the train and “the backbone, the enthusiastic learner joined his first band by 15 and as he became more ambitious and curious, he sought out older practitioners to help him to bring to life the notes that steadily beat inside his head. “Guys liked to take me under their wing, and that was incredible because I wanted to improve and see where I could fit in this world, MonteCarlo, whose edification in-
cluded studies at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, 901 S. Broad St., said. “Especially, coming from this city, there was such a rich history of success to make myself aware of, and that pride of being a musician with Philly roots was pretty compelling, too. With groups such as Heaven’s Edge and Cinderella having emerged as successful Philly-bred bands and with a massive distaste for the word “no, he continued to actualize his vision through the Delaware County-based Midnight Angel at 20. Opening for acts such as Quiet Riot and Ratt, the unit helped MonteCarlo to believe even more in his passion, which came to include the 2008 founding of Juliet’s Vice, for whom he expanded his acumen by playing guitar. Feeling he needed more potency as part of his progression, he auditioned for MACH22 shortly before going on a vacation in ’12 and enjoyed an incredible end of the year, as he group welcomed him, had him record tracks immediately, secured him for its participation in the Made in America Festival, and rejoiced with him when they played with Guns N’ Roses lead guitarist, Slash, at the House
of Blues. “These guys are what I’d wanted to be a part of for so long, MonteCarlo said of his chums, with whom he has done regional tours and enjoyed many fond memories, including interactions with Steel Panther at the Theatre of Living Arts, 334 South St., and time in Oklahoma with Kid Rock. “We’ve had some wonderful moments as we’ve formulated our identity, and that’s only going to grow stronger. No matter what amazing recollections the musicians have about their earlier efforts, nothing presents a challenge to their Guns N’ Roses affiliation, which they learned they would have only two days before the show. “I initially started out nervous over it all, MonteCarlo said of the honor. “Then I progressed to acceptance and was finally able to summon a huge sigh of relief. The exposure was beautiful. Now, it’s time to ride that enthusiasm to the next chapter. SPR

’m the proud son of a cop. I saw him come home from his shift with his jacket in shreds because an angry woman came at him with a kitchen knife when he tried to arrest her boyfriend for assaulting her. He was tough on street crime, but he was just as hard on bad cops - complained about cops who took the law into their own hands, cops who turned away from an arrest because their shift had almost ended, or even just cops who grew fat and lazy. I think about what he would have said, if he were alive, about the execution-style killing of cops and African-American civilians. I wish he were still here with us, but, in a way, I’m glad he didn’t have to see what’s happening in our streets today. I’m glad he didn’t have to see how divided we have become - trying to figure out, on the basis of our politics, whose lives matter more. Too many black people are being killed by bad cops. Too many cops are being shot down by psychos who are mistaken for legitimate protesters. This is not an issue on which we are forced to choose sides. All the killings are part of the violent fabric of today’s streets in big city America. The innocent victims are both cops and the victims of bad cops. Charles Manson once infamously tried to start a race war in America. That’s what the senseless 1969 slayings of Sharon Tate and the others were about. Manson hoped blacks would be blamed for the murders. He thought a race war was inevitable and that he’d jump-start that conflict. Manson must be chuckling in his prison cell right now. He’s probably writing a new tune about the insanity that has gripped us. If allowed, he is likely strumming it on his guitar. The bad cops and the cop killers are doing Charlie’s bidding. They might as well be bona fide members of the Manson Family. I can just hear Charlie screaming, “Bring it on, baby. Those folks who have taken sides, as if one can take sides with senseless killing, have come up with all kinds of justifications for the murder on our streets. The snipers are justified, some say, because African-Americans are being killed by cops. The other side claims that the police shootings of unarmed blacks are justified because the cops feel threatened. No. Not today. Not ever. Whether those justifications are used for political purpose or come from some deep emotion, they are dead wrong. Wrong as in justifying murder for which there is no justification.

Some blame the President for the cop killings, but then is there anything horrific that has happened in the last eight years where they have not placed the blame on his shoulders? They also blame Black Lives Matter. But as flawed as the organization is (and we’ll get to that), it arose out of a spate of unprovoked killing of African-Americans in a significantly larger proportion than whites, and they are not the ones wielding the weapons against our police. I have my differences with Black Lives Matter, but the mere name of that organization is not “racist, as charged by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Yes, I would prefer the group had been named Black Lives Matter, Too, but pointing out the disparity in the way the police deal with African-Americans and whites is not racist, but fact. Regarding my differences with Black Lives Matter - the group lacks the steady hand of a strong leader. It has tolerated the unforgivable violent rhetoric against the police from some of its members, but it has also largely been peaceful in its protests, a First Amendment right that is too easily forgotten by those who are seemingly fixated only on the Second Amendment. There is also overheated rhetoric on both sides. Soon after the Dallas tragedy, the Drudge Report carried the shameful headline Black Lives Kill. Former Texas Congressman Joe Walsh (not the member of the singing group The Eagles) tweeted that Obama had better watch out. Social commentator and comedian Bill Maher complained that the Dallas police had used a robot with a bomb to kill the sniper. His reasoning was that police are paid to do a dangerous job (he felt obligated to add, but being a cop is not one of the 10 most dangerous occupations) and should be placed in harm’s way over using a robot. Easy for a comedian, who gets paid much more than what we pay cops, to say. There are ways to improve the safety of both our citizens and our police, but not by taking sides. Support Your Local Police should not mean whether they are right or wrong. Black Lives Matter should not mean that blue lives or white lives or whatever color lives matter less. We can, and should, police ourselves. Any time we see and hear someone talking trash, call that person out. Protesters call out irresponsible protesters instead of remaining silent. The majority of good cops should call out the bad cops instead of observing the blue code of silence. Dad was one of the good cops. I never saw him cry until Mom became seriously ill. And then again when he received his death sentence from the doctors. If there’s an afterlife, he is weeping now for all of us. Protesters and cops. ave you found that your frustration levels have risen as rapidly as the temperatures have over the last week? With daunting digits rendering many of us homebodies, reaching for snacks as our sustenance is an easy alternative to using ovens for meal preparations, but why should our nutrition suffer just because Mother Nature’s mercy is absent? Through her Summer Squash over Rice recipe, Roe Lucas reminds us that when we do not want to fire up the oven, we can still end up with a tasty home-cooked meal. DIRECTIONS: Cut the pandan leaves into one-inch pieces. Combine the leaves, the sugar, and the coconut cream in a blender. Blend to extract the pandan juice, and strain to obtain a cup of pandan-infused coconut cream. Whisk the eggs and the pandan-infused coconut cream in a bowl. Place the mixture in a double boiler, and gently cook, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens to a custard consistency, approximately 20 minutes. Immediately cool the custard over ice. Store the output in your refrigerator. For the plating of the kaya and the soft-boiled eggs, begin by toasting four slices of bread. Spread salted butter on one slice and kaya on the other. Make a sandwich, and repeat the process. Crack two eggs into a bowl, add the soy sauce and the dash of pepper. Serve the kaya toast and the eggs together. SPR

aintaining allegiance to principles can prove problematic for restaurant owners, especially when fear rears its ugly head and the temptation becomes to compromise one’s calling to stay afloat. Knowing the culinary dynasty that has come to dominate East Passyunk Avenue, Angelina Branca felt initial pressure to perform, but in the five months that she and husband John have helmed SatĂŠ Kampar, she has never strayed from stressing that being authentic will breed a successful business. “Our peers set a very high standard,â€? the 43-year-old said from her first dining venture, 1837 E. Passyunk Ave. “However, I realized we just have to keep doing what we know best.â€? For the couple, who recently celebrated its 10-year wedding anniversary, that means executing excellent Malaysian offerings, with Angelina thrilled to honor her homeland’s nutritional chronicles. “I’d been gone long enough from home to have the desire to have a space that would let me share my heritage,â€? the Center City dweller, who came to the United States in 2000, said of actualizing a dream that she and her beau had believed would be their retirement endeavor. “We’re thrilled to be here because of the mystique of East Passyunk Avenue and the receptivity to our food.â€? The co-proprietor gushed when discussing her Asian birthplace’s inescapable influence on her identity as a foodie, noting that encountering her countrymen and countrywomen in Philadelphia and at her 50-seat dining site makes her feel as if she is interacting with relatives. East Passyunk Avenue won her enthusiastic personality over Northern Liberties and University City, leaving her in an overjoyed state where she feels free to experiment yet never compromise. “We work with our flavors and find people from every country who can taste our food and identify with flavors from their backgrounds,â€? Branca said. “However, what we serve here is truly Malaysian, and that has gone over great.â€? The eatery’s chief source of renown comes from its meat-on-a-stick options, but other items grant guests a delicious dining opportunity, including Kaya, the recipe for which she chose to share with readers. “It’s kind of like my country’s version of peanut butter and jelly,â€? Branca said with a laugh about the coconut custard jam that her maternal grandmother prepared for her every day and that

day to celebrate because a long journey has come to a very successful conclusion, and it’s because of people like Ryan that we’re here today.
entered to cheers from the families and the dignitaries, with the senior players presenting the Howards with a signed bat before all of the eager applause receivers headed to Maryland’s Prince George’s County for the Major League Baseball RBI Regional Tournament. RBI personnel, including Jared SpragueLott, a resident of the 700 block of South Ninth Street and a member of the Taney Youth Baseball Association squad that advanced to the 2014 Little League Baseball World Series, who helped to put up a batting cage, gathered around Ryan Howard, the ’06 National League Most Valuable Player, after he and Krystle unveiled the official name of the space. The end of the indoor portion of the occasion (attendees also had a chance to inspect a 66’ wide by 4’ high mural of baseball greats thank to The City of Philadelphia’s Percent for Art Program) endowed the professional with another instance of novelty for the onlookers, as he played pitcher in helping fellow left-handed batter Mateen Bradley to notch the ceremonial first hit. “What a tremendous dream come true! Dan Baker, the Phillies public address announcer and the day’s emcee, said as the Phillie Phanatic fraternized with the crowd. “Congratulations to everyone for a job well done. MORE THAN 20,000 young men and women have received tutelage through the MLB Academies collective, with north of 500 student-athletes having gone on to participate in collegiate baseball and softball programs. With such talent in their midst, the overseers knew they needed a stellar stop for their charges’ evolution, and the constant smiles on the faces of so many individuals, including the constituents of the Anderson Monarchs, who will also benefit from the boon after having used makeshift space through coach Steve Bandura, encouraged Mayor Jim Kenney to utter that everyone was congregating within “an awesomely stunning addition to Parks and Recreation. “This lets us speak of having yet another fine component in our portfolio, commissioner Kathryn Ott Lovell said mid-way through the program. “The more opportunities we have for children to grow, the better we will be as a community. She and the other speakers, including Second District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson, who began his comments with “Let’s go, Monarchs, pondered the possibilities that the center could help youngsters to explore as it joins the outdoor venue, which opened June 4, 2015, in bolstering Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyrePhiladelphia’s baseball reputation. hiladelphia fancies itself as a city of firsts, with the attainment of unprecedented achievements following the pursuit of sheer novelty filling folks with an immense sense of satisfaction. July 21 offered a treat for those who go nuts for newness, as Major League Baseball, the Philadelphia Phillies, and Philadelphia Parks and Recreation opened The Ryan Howard Training Center at The Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 740 S. 17th St., with the space and an outdoor playing location at 20th Street and Pattison Avenue giving Philadelphia the nation’s only multi-site MLB Urban Youth Academy. “There are words in this game that have a nice ring to them, such as ‘sacrifice’ and ‘home,’ words that remind us that this is a sport that makes us feel a bond, Darrell Miller, Major League Baseball’s vice president for youth and facility development, said during the afternoon celebration. “Another big one is ‘team,’ and I’m proud to count myself as a member of the team that accomplished this. We did it! The representative received robust applause for his inclusive comment, especially because the concept for the 7,500-squarefoot baseball/softball facility dates back nine years. Contending that baseball teaches one to be humble, he could have, based on that duration, stated that it encourages pa-
tience, too, but nobody appeared upset that the vision took nearly a decade to become a reality. “This is about opportunity, City of Philadelphia managing director Michael DiBerardinis said of the efforts of the local architectural firm EwingCole. “It is going to add to the arsenal of activities that we are proud to make available to our children. Through the stunning $2.5 million enclosure, which joined the existing recreation center in the winter, more than 8,000 Phillies Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities participants will engage in fitness training and educational and vocational programs headed by former and current Major League players, scouts, and coaches, among others. Its namesake, with wife Krystle by his side, beamed when speaking of their lot in life. “It has been our passion to give back to the community, the Phillies first baseman said of what he and his bride have accomplished through The Ryan Howard Big Piece Foundation. “Today is a reminder that you always have to believe in your dreams and make them your priority. The slugger has long captivated fans with his bat, but his commitment in securing the completion of the project counted just as much to David Montgomery as every titanic home run has. “He’s made his share of history, and he did it again here because your four-hole hitter is not normally your closer, too, the franchise’s chairman said in a well-received demonstration of wordplay. “Today is a
