reaking News: (I have formed my own news network — the Cardella News Network, otherwise known as “CNN.” We begin our first day on the air with some breaking news. Note: “Breaking” no longer indicates immediacy. It’s just a promotional trickery to make our viewers believe we’re ahead of the competition with a story, even though we aren’t.) We begin our show with breaking news on Donald Trump Jr.’s June meeting with Russian officials. We have learned that there were additional attendees at that meeting than first thought. CNN has just confirmed that in addition to a Russian lawyer linked to the successor to the KGB, a Russian lobbyist with connections to Russian intelligence, a translator, Paul Manafort, and Jared Kushner, there were other attendees – 3,000 Muscovites, the entire Vienna Boys Choir, several members of the Bolshoi Ballet, and a partridge in a Russian pear tree. Mikhail Gorbachev also advised this commentator that he was in the room briefly, just to get his name mentioned in the news again after a long absence. We have not yet been able to obtain the reason for the presence of the Vienna Boys Choir. When asked about why he did not mention all of the attendees at the meeting, Trump Jr. replied, “I simply forgot. It was a busy time in the middle of the campaign.”

pon taking on a leadership role in the Grays Ferry neighborhood, Kyle Shenandoah wanted to figure out what issues were affecting its residents the most. After going door-to-door and asking for feed-

back, he discovered many of these people were experiencing difficulty in finding employment, and in turn he organized a community resource and job fair with the Salvation Army in South Philly taking place on Saturday, Aug. 19 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. As program director of the Resident Action Committee and vice president of the newly formed Tasker-Morris Neighbors Association, Shenandoah has been trying to plan this event since last

February when he first began knocking on doors of residential homes to encourage community members to get out and vote for the next district attorney in late-spring. However, upon his request, Shenandoah found many residents would respond by explaining they needed to find employment before they worried about voting. “I kept hearing this over and over again and See JOBS, page 6>>

Meanwhile President Trump revealed today that he plans to get a future Olympics for Los Angeles. Mr. Trump claims Russia will support the United States bid. The New York Times is reporting that in return for Russia’s support, Vladimir Putin has been assured that he will get a detailed plan of all U.S. nuclear facilities. The president has called that report “fake news from a failing newspaper.â€? The president also denied a report that Russian officials would get comped at Trump hotels in the LA area. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is also denying a report aired on this network yesterday. Our sources have told us that when the embattled attorney general was in Philadelphia recently, he met with the Sixers Joel Embiid at the president’s request. Sessions says President Trump is interested in finding out whether there’s a way that person’s hands can be enlarged through exercise. “Embiid is known to have big hands,â€? said Sessions, “but I can assure you that the president’s hands are already very,very big.â€? Sessions appeared to wink when he made these remarks. In other news on the political front, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is denying that 49 Republican senators have asked him to include special perks in his new health-care bill which may or may not be voted on this week and may or may not be supported by the president. As you might recall, McConnell had carved out a special benefit for Alaska in his effort to get Alaska’s Sen. Lisa Murkowski to support the em-

battled Republican health-care plan. McConnell also flatly refuted the idea that he would make the introduction of a new Republican health-care bill a weekly ritual. When pressed by reporters, McConnell did admit that Republican members of Congress are thinking about identifying themselves as Democrats when they appear at future town hall meetings. Meanwhile at her press briefing today, Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that the president will be “very,very angry� if this latest version of the health-care bill fails to pass. Sanders added that the president only uses a double “very� when he is extremely upset. Now my closing commentary, which we modestly call Cardella Speaks The Truth – We should all give thanks to President Trump for warning us of the Clinton campaign’s collusion with Ukraine. While the liberal media obsesses over Mr. Trump’s alleged collusion with Russia, it has neglected the far more serious proposition of the Clinton campaign colluding with Ukraine. While Ukraine, unlike Russia, does not have nukes and doesn’t have Vladimir Putin running the country, (although Putin has graciously offered to do so), Ukraine does have borscht bombs and is known to pound its lard with garlic. Liberals are so obsessed with Russia, but should be more worried about Ukraine. Any country that is downright neurotic about being called the Ukraine, is a country that should concern us. On the lighter side, Facebook reports that photos of kittens on social media increased 85 percent in the last year. Good night. Stay awake, America!

Police: Suspect wanted for multiple shootings By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

On Wednesday, July 26, the Philadelphia Police Department sent a release stating it needs the public’s assistance in locating Xavier GutierrezMendez. He is reported to be responsible for two shootings that took place on July 22 at approximately 8:20 p.m. After the incident, GUTIERREZ-MENDEZ officers assigned to the 12th Police District responded to investigate a report of a “person with a gun.� Upon arrival, officers located a 24-year-old male victim lying on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds to the back of the head, shoulders and arm. The victim was transported by police to Penn-Presbyterian Medical Center where he was immediately taken into surgery and listed in critical condition. Previously, on June 8 at approximately 9:45 p.m., 3rd District officers responded to the area of 2100 S. 5th St. for another “person with a gun.� Upon arrival, the officers located a 44-year-old male victim suffering from a gunshot wound to his back. The victim was transported to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital by police and was listed in stable condition. The victim later informed investigators that following an argument, he was shot by a Hispanic male he knew from the neighborhood as “Xavier.� Detectives from the South and Southwest Detective Divisions developed a suspect who was later identified as Xavier Gutierrez-Mendez, 31. There are two warrants issued for his arrest. Attempted theft of purse On Thursday, July 20, at approximately 9 a.m., a 67-year-old white female complainant was walking eastbound on the 800 block of Mifflin Street when a white male offender approached her from behind and attempted to grab her purse from her arm. The complainant reported that as she attempted to hold onto her purse, a struggle ensued and the offender pulled her to the ground causing her to sustain minor bruising and scrapes to her shoulder, hip, knee and elbow

before he fled the scene. Nothing was taken and the complainant did not require immediate medical attention. The offender, who was reported to be approximately 30 years old with a thin build and wearing a white T-shirt and shorts, was last seen running toward 8th Street. Spray paint vandalism On Monday, July 24, at approximately 9:50 p.m., three unknown suspects were captured on surveillance video walking in the 1200 block of South 35th Street. Two of the suspects were spray painting anti-police slogans and profanity on walls and vehicles while the third acted as a lookout. They then left the area in an unknown direction. Multiple thefts of car batteries On Tuesday, June 20, a theft of a battery at 2000 Lombard St. was captured on surveillance video. The video depicted an unknown white or Hispanic male with a slim build, salt and pepper sideburns and a goatee and approximately 6-feet tall exiting a tan Honda Civic with Pennsylvania tag, JTN1733. The male then walked back to a Jeep Wrangler, lifted the hood and removed the battery. He then walked back to the Honda placing the battery inside the vehicle. Including this incident, the Philadelphia Police Department’s Major Crimes Auto Squad has been investigating multiple thefts of vehicle batteries, mostly from Jeep Wranglers. These vehicles’ hoods can be easily opened from the outside and thefts have been occurring since May in the 6, 9, 17 and 26 districts. KLEIN: Joseph’s House founder now leads efforts to fund shelter

<<Continued from page 12 Klein said. “In our second year we were open for six months, then seven months, and in our fourth year we bought a building and have been operating inside it all year round ever since.” Yet, as the operation of Joseph’s House expanded, Klein and McDermott realized if they were going to continue meeting the need that was being presented, that they would need to find increased ways to acquire funds. Thus, they came to the decision that someone would need to step up as the executive director of the organization – a role that Klein was asked to take. “Everyone who had been involved asked me, ‘Well, would you want to [be the executive director?’” Klein said. “So I said yes and stopped working with [St. Joseph’s], and begin going to different church groups and speaking about the work of Joseph’s House.” As executive director, Klein has since played a vital role in securing more than $1 million for the non-profit organization. Without these donations, it would not have been possible for Joseph’s House to have assisted as many local homeless people as it has, and has helped successfully transition many of them into better living situations and lifestyles. “Last year, we had 532 homeless come to stay with us, and of those people, 158 were success-

fully housed,” Klein said. Although this was only a 30 percent success rate, Klein explained often the transitional period can be quite lengthy, with individuals, especially those suffering from addiction, who have mental health issues or who need veterans’ services, taking a few steps forward then one or two steps backward.

To help ensure Joseph’s House is truly assisting its tenants and not merely enabling them, those seeking to use its services must agree to meeting with case managers and actively trying to pursue resources that will help them overcome their hardships. Typically, a day shift at Joseph’s House, which lasts from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. will consist of rough-

ly 60 people seeking the organization’s services, and a night shift, lasting from 8 p.m. until 8 a.m. will house 75 to 80 people on average. “When people come to stay here we have an agreement with them that we’ll provide shelter, food, showers with personal hygiene products and case management services, but they need to be honest with us and willing to work with us and get busy in tackling and overcoming the challenges keeping them homeless,” Klein said. “If they can’t abide by that agreement, we’ll give them an exit date that’s approximately three weeks to a month out.” Klein added that establishing an exit date is often the final push (or dose of reality) needed to change a person’s outlook on really altering their present circumstances for the betterment of their future. As long as the tenants are making an effort to “move forward and facilitate the gap” he said they are welcome to stay at Joseph’s House for as long as they need. “Sometimes this work is really heartbreaking, other times it’s really rewarding,” Klein said. “Recently we helped a fellow who would take two steps back and one forward get his own apartment, and he gave me a firm handshake and thanked me for never giving up on him. That’s just not the story for everyone, but you just have to take it one day at a time.”

Valerie Yoder recalls discovering a recipe for Korean beef bowls, but with fat intake and calories being a big concern, she altered the dish to suit her family’s taste and dietary concerns. She is sharing her recipe for Asian Turkey Bowls. It’s a big hit at home, including with her children. So, the next time you are seeking a healthy alternative to those greasy and fatty meals, this one will certainly fill the bowl. Ingredients: 1/4 cup of tamari or soy sauce 2 tablespoons of honey 1 teaspoon of sesame oil 1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper 1 pound of 85 percent of lean ground turkey 1/4 cup of chopped vidalia onion Handful of chopped cilantro 2 minced garlic cloves 1 tablespoon of fresh ginger (about 1-2 inches) 3 cups of cooked rice Cucumber slices, as desired Red pepper slices, cut small

Divvy up rice into each bowl, top with turkey, cucumbers, cilantro, red peppers, sesame seeds and scallions.

‘I will never retire,’ vows Merrill Reese Voice of the Eagles likens current team to early, Reid, McNabb years By Tom Waring SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

Longtime Eagles radio play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese acknowledges he is optimistic about the team entering every football season. “Guilty as charged,” he said. Reese recently addressed a luncheon sponsored by the Greater Northeast Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce. The event was held at the Philadelphia Protestant Home in Northeast Philly. Bill Conaway, the Protestant Home’s director of community relations, introduced Reese, who is entering his 41st season in the booth. Reese appeared on WBCB (1490 AM) just before his remarks. He is co-owner of the Levittown-based station, which broadcasts a weekly show at PPH. Soon, fans will be hearing the 74-year-old’s familiar voice – and that of his good friend and color commentator Mike Quick – on Sportsradio 94WIP and more than a dozen other places on the dial, including WBCB.

Fans will be hearing him for a long time. “I will never retire,” he said. Reese told the PPH crowd that he senses something special, like in 2000, when coach Andy Reid and quarterback Donovan McNabb were both in their second season. Reid, McNabb and the Eagles reached the Super Bowl four years later. Reese calls Doug Pederson, a former assistant under Reid and teammate of McNabb, a “smart coach.” As for Carson Wentz, Reese believes, in three years, he’ll be the best quarterback in the NFC East and among the top five in the NFL. “That’s how good he is,” he said. Reese recalled the Eagles were 3-1 last season before offensive tackle Lane Johnson began serving a 10-game suspension for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The Eagles went 2-8 in his absence. The Eagles, in Reese’s opinion, have dramatically improved at wide receiver by signing free agents Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith.

Reese is also high on LeGarrette Blount, counting on the 250-pound running back to be effective on third down and short yardage. Defensive end Derek Barnett, Reese said, should have a good season. Drafted 16th overall in the first round of April’s draft, he broke Reggie White’s sack records at Tennessee. The second-round pick, cornerback Sidney Jones, has great potential, in Reese’s view. He is expected to miss the season with an injury. Overall, Reese said it is “doubtful” the Eagles will make the Super Bowl this year, but would be “disappointed” if they didn’t make the playoffs. Reese offered some critical remarks about former Eagles coach Chip Kelly, former Eagles wide receiver Terrell Owens, Washington Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and the sputtering Cleveland Browns organization. The broadcaster saved some of his kindest words for, perhaps surprisingly, former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick. A self-described “dog person” who enjoys spending time with his daughter’s Boston terrier, Reese called Vick – who spent

21 months in jail for his role in a dog-fighting ring – “the best teammate.” As for the best coach, that one was easy. Dick Vermeil was the “best coach I’ve ever been around.” Brian Dawkins, Eric Allen and Sean Landeta are among the former Eagles who should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in Reese’s opinion. A no-brainer is Harold Carmichael, Reese said, contending that he was a better wide receiver than Lynn Swann, of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Reese asked a series of trivia questions and gave away prizes for the right answers. And what would a Merrill Reese speech be without one of his famous calls. Fans got to hear the final play of the Dec. 19, 2010 game against the New York Giants. The Eagles trailed by 21 points with less than eight minutes to go, but scored four touchdowns, including a game-ending punt return by DeSean Jackson, to pull out the miracle victory at the Meadowlands, as Reese screamed, “The Eagles win. The Eagles win.”

busy offseason has given the Eagles some increased star power, and many of those additions — through free agency, a trade and the NFL Draft — figure to play key roles this season. Here is a ranking of the additions based on their potential impact on the team in 2017:

Derek Barnett, defensive end

Alshon Jeffery, wide receiver

He is the go-to wide receiver the Eagles have lacked for many seasons. Jeffery, playing on a one-year contract, has been nothing short of outstanding in the spring through the early portion of training camp. He’s big, he’s got terrific hands and he’s motivated to return to the top of his game. Expect big-time numbers this season.

Tim Jernigan, defensive tackle

An aggressive, up-the-field defensive tackle, Jernigan played in a read-and-react scheme in Baltimore. Here, in Jim Schwartz’s defense, Jernigan will be let loose. Watch out. He’s a beast, and teamed with Fletcher Cox, Jernigan should be a disruptive interior defensive lineman.

LeGarrette Blount, running back

At 250 pounds, Blount gives the Eagles a physical presence in the running game. The Eagles were lousy in the red zone offensively last year, so Blount is an upgrade. He scored 18 touchdowns with New England last season, 15 of those scores coming inside the 10-yard line. Dial him up in your fantasy football league.

Robinson for a starting job. It’s a huge leap for Douglas, who was playing at Nassau Community College three seasons ago. He has a lot of promise, but expecting a lot this season may be asking too much.

The question with Smith is whether he still has his top-end speed. We won’t know that until the season begins, but the early peek is promising. The Eagles ranked 28th in the league in pass plays of plus-20 yards last season. Smith is here to stretch defenses.

Patrick Robinson, cornerback Unable to find his footing in the NFL since he was taken in the first round by New Orleans in 2010, Robinson hopes to make the most of an opportunity of a question mark-filled cornerback position. The starting job is there for him to earn.

Rasul Douglas, cornerback The team’s third-round draft pick, Douglas is competing with

Chris Long, defensive end

Long won a Super Bowl in New England last season, so he brings an intangible that few in the locker room (safety Malcolm Jenkins, special teamer Chris Maragos) understand. That means something. It’s also helpful that Long shows he has some gas left in his tank. Once one of the best defensive ends in the league, Long is now best suited as a situational defensive end. He will give a ton of effort every time he’s on the field.

Nick Foles, quarterback Foles is back, this time as the No. 2 quarterback behind Carson Wentz. At the very least, Foles is a huge upgrade over Chase Daniel. Hopefully, we never see Foles play, unless he gets some mop-up duty.

Mack Hollins, wide receiver Donnel Pumphrey, running back The two fourth-round draft picks should find some time, at the very least, on special teams. Hollins is a demon in coverage. Pumphrey, all 175 pounds of him, is going to touch the ball a lot in the preseason games. Enjoy the show. He’s small, but, oh boy, the kid can fly.
