Of lobster and honor

T

he Palm Restaurant reopened recently after almost a two-year absence. During July and August, Palm offers a lobster dinner special. Two people can share a four-pound lobster with the fixings. Fran loves lobster. I do, too. And I love this deal. Fran is a disciplined diner. In my world, that means more lobster for me. On a recent Saturday night, we were early for our reservation so we took a seat across from one another in a booth in the crowded lounge and ordered drinks. Palm used to be famous for the caricatures of local personalities on its walls. The caricatures are all gone now except for one of Rocky raising his arms high on the steps of the Art Museum. One thing you notice about the crowds at steakhouses in town like Palm, Capital Grille, and Del Frisco’s is that the people all look as if they just flew in from Vegas. Some of these folks give narcissism a bad name. These guys could all be nicknamed “The Mooch.” The gals overdress by being underdressed. Capital Grille even has personal lockers where the vanity crowd can store their expensive wine or vodka. Ruben Amaro and Vince Fumo once had their own lockers. Both no longer

Racism is a poison of the soul, and we need to work if we want a different country in the future To the Editor: Racism is a poison of the soul. It’s the ugly, original sin of our country, an illness that has never fully healed. Blending it with the Nazi salute, the relic of a regime that murdered millions, compounds the obscenity. Thus the wave of public anger about white nationalist events in Charlottesville this weekend is well warranted. We especially need to pray for those injured in the violence. But we need more than pious public statements. If our anger today is just another mental virus displaced tomorrow by the next distraction or outrage we find in the media, nothing will change.

Charlottesville matters. It’s a snapshot of our public unraveling into real hatreds brutally expressed; a collapse of restraint and mutual respect now taking place across the country. We need to keep the images of Charlottesville alive in our memories. If we want a different kind of country in the future, we need to start today with a conversion in our own hearts, and an insistence on the same in others. That may sound simple. But the history of our nation and its tortured attitudes toward race proves exactly the opposite. Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

POLICE REPORT

Police report assault, robberies, gunďŹ re injury By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

The following reports were provided by the Philadelphia Police Department Office of Public Affairs:

Delivery driver faces attempted robbery On Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 1:10 a.m., police officers responded to the 1600 block of South Newkirk Street for a robbery in progress. Upon arrival, they were met by the complainant, a Domino’s Pizza delivery driver. The complainant stated he was making a delivery for Domino’s Pizza at a residence on the 1600 block of South Newkirk Street when the offender, a roughly 17to 21-year-old black male with a medium build and wearing a black ski mask, dark sweatshirt with writing on the center of the chest and jeans, approached him and demanded his money. A struggle ensued and the offender eventually entered the complainant’s vehicle, a silver 2014 Nissan Sentra, and fled the scene. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Victim struck by gunfire On Saturday, Aug. 5 at approximately 10:40 p.m., a 26-year-old black male was walking northbound on South 28th Street from Jackson Street when he heard four to five gunshots as a black vehicle drove by him. The complainant stated that after hearing the shots, he realized he had been shot in the left thigh and immediately ran to a residence on the 2800 block of Jackson Street, and police were then called. A medic unit responded and transported the complainant to Presbyterian Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. The complainant stated he was unable to provide a description of the shooter because he did not see him. However, police officers later surveyed the area for a crime scene and located ballistics evidence and found two vehicles that had also been struck by gunfire. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Assault and robbery On Saturday, Aug. 5 at approximately 11:52 a.m., police officers took a report of a “robbery point of knife which occurred on the 1000 block

of Mifflin Street. Upon police officers arrival, a Hispanic male reported that on Saturday, Aug. 5 at 2 a.m., he was standing on the front steps of his residence when he was approached by approximately six unknown Hispanic male offenders, all between the ages of 15 to 20 years old, who began asking him questions. The complainant stated that he ignored the offenders and attempted to enter his residence. However, one of the offenders then grabbed him by his bookbag and flung him to the ground. Next, the group of male offenders began kicking and punching the complainant while going through his pockets. After the incident, the complainant had sustained injuries including bruising to his face, left arm and left knee, however, he did not require immediate medical treatment. The complainant reported the offenders took two cellphones, $20, his house keys and a black wallet from his person before fleeing the area. The offenders were last seen running eastbound on Mifflin Street, and then southbound on 10th Street. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

PANTANO: Longtime WOGL DJ joining city’s musical Walk of Fame ‘This feels very, very good,’ says Philly’s Patti LaBelle of W.O.F. induction

A

lthough having grown up a little further west at 58th and Washington streets, singer, author, actress and entrepreneur, Patti LaBelle was also a 2017 Music Walk of Fame inductee. She explained that, to her, it is a wonderful blessing to be recognized in this way by her hometown, and that she finds it humbling and extremely honoring. “I love Philadelphia and the people here so this feels very, very good,” LaBelle said. “I’m excited to be able to celebrate with my fellow inductees.” Having taken her career from singing to many ventures across a variety of industries, including the penning of her new cookbook, “Desserts LaBelle,” she advises the key to success is to believe in oneself and never give up. She also recommends never letting anyone state the limits of what one can or cannot do. Another 2017 inductee was Sister Sledge, a music group which gained popularity in the 1970s, and which was comprised of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. Best known for their song, “We Are Family,” the sisters from Southwest Philadelphia remain a staple of the disco era. “It feels amazing [to be inducted into the Walk of Fame] because this is our hometown,” Kathy Sledge, the youngest of the sisters, said. “To be honored in Philadelphia is really special.”

Above, Pantano appears when he started out in radio in the 1970s. At right, Pantano and wife Debbie pose with fellow Walk of Fame inductee and American music icon Chubby Checker.

<<Continued from page 1 in radio, TV and film. That’s how it all started,” Pantano said. “I first got on the radio in 1971 in Camden at WCAN, but my first professional radio job wasn’t until 1977 when I was on 98.1.” Although it took years for his dream to become a professional reality, Pantano persevered and today is honored to be recognized for his work and contributions to the music industry. While he’s also been recognized in the Temple University Hall of Fame, for him, the Music Walk of Fame is another one of the highest awards and best honors he could have ever dreamed of receiving. “I’m so honored to be able to be in the sidewalk of the City of Philadelphia,” Pantano said. “It’s hard to believe, but I’ve got to thank all the people who have been dancing in the clubs and listening to me on the radio over the years. They’ve made me what I am.” In addition to being the renowned host of the Saturday Night Dance Party, Pantano explains he really was just a kid from South Philly and he’ll never forget his roots. As for other South Philly kids who love and have a passion for broadcasting or music, just as he did decades ago, Pantano stresses the key to success is to never give up and to keep going and pushing forward. “If you want to be successful work hard, but if you want to be No. 1, work twice as hard and never give up,” Pantano, whose favorite Philly pastime is enjoying all the great food this section of the city has to offer, said. “I never gave up my dream in the 70s.” For a full list of Philadelphia Music Alliance’s Music Walk of Fame inductees, visit: philadelphiamusicalliance.org/walk-of-fame.php.

O

ver the past few weeks, a growing debate has occurred over whether parking on the center median should be permitted. Although many South Philly residents use this space to park, by law it is prohibited. Thus, two solutions have been proposed: to either start enforcing the law, or to amend the laws to legalize median parking with certain restrictions.

5th Square: PennDOT crash data from 20082016 reveals every pedestrian death on South Broad occurred south of Washington Avenue, the stretch where illegally parked cars consume the median’s buffer zones, turning lanes and crosswalks. From City Hall to Washington Avenue, where enforcement occurs, there were zero pedestrian deaths in this same span. Joe LiTrenta representing the residents of South Philadelphia: Businesses and residents along

the corridor and in the surrounding blocks rely on the approximately 200 parking spaces the median provides. Elimination of these spaces will hurt the small and large businesses on Broad Street, create additional parking congestion for the already crowded neighborhood streets and inconvenience residents, possibly prompting them to leave the city. At this time, 5th Square has no proposal on how to use an empty median, just that it should be free of cars.

The call for the enforcement of the existing laws that prohibit median parking on South Broad Street from 5th Square, an urbanist political action committee, began over a year ago during the Democratic National Convention, which took place from July 25 to 28, 2016. During the DNC, current median parking laws were enforced. After the convention, 5th Square PAC received 1,167 signatures for its petition attempting to solidify the enforcement and subsequent ticketing of median parking. On July 20, 5th Square filed a lawsuit against the City of Philadelphia and Parking Authority to “perform their mandated duties to end illegal and unsafe parking on South Broad.” 5th Square says it is open to conversations as to what should become of the medians (i.e. possible raised medians), and continues to request the pres-

ent laws be enforced. On Saturday, July 22, South Philly resident and activist Joe LiTrenta voiced his support of the median parking practice by releasing a YouTube video stating the city parking laws should be amended to allow for free median parking on Broad Street south of Washington Avenue (where applicable). The scope of his legalization request includes: Vehicles will not park in turning lanes or crosswalks, nor on existing angled yellow lines that the city has identified for visibility. Vehicles will not park on existing concrete medians or subway grates. Vehicles must park between the double yellow lines with no portion of the vehicle obstructing traffic. Failure to comply with any of these rules will result in ticketing and possible towing by the Philadelphia Parking Authority or City of Philadelphia.

hen talking about the great all-time leaders in Philadelphia Phillies history, Darren Daulton is one of the names that is almost a guarantee to make the list. He was the well-respected clubhouse leader of the 1993 squad that advanced to the World Series. On Aug. 7, the Phillies family lost the man best known as “Dutch at the age of 55 from brain cancer. With Alumni Weekend taking place at Citizens Bank Park last weekend, it was only fitting the team, former players and fans used the time to honor and remember one of the all-time favorites in Phillies history. He was the third Phillie to pass away in what is turning out to be a very sad year for the team family. Dallas Green, the manager of the 1980 World Series champions, and Hall-of-Fame pitcher Jim Bunning were the others.

CARDELLA: Take-our-picture plea leads to questions about marriage <<Continued from page 1 do, although for different reasons. In the lounge, Fran and I are minding our own business. She checks her iPhone. Me? I’m lost in thought about whether I like my lobster steamed or broiled. Sitting across from us in the lounge, on high bar stools, are two guys and a gal. One of the guys suddenly jumps up from his stool and slides into our booth alongside my wife. “Take our picture,” the guy says and hands her his iPhone. Fran is nothing if not obliging, so she gets up and takes a few pictures of the trio. The guy is not happy with the picture. A woman suddenly appears out of nowhere and claims to be an expert at taking photos. Maybe she’s one of those famous paparazzi. Who the hell knows? She takes a photo of this annoying group. Me? I’m still fixating on the lobster dinner I wish I didn’t have to share. Fran’s pride is hurt. She is not normally one to suffer a bruised ego easily. I would’ve seen she was upset, if I wasn’t busy thinking about dipping some claw meat into a cup of drawn butter. She demands to see which photos are better – hers or the pushy self-proclaimed expert’s. It turns out Fran took the better pictures. The guy who started all the fuss originally now agrees with Fran. The self-styled expert is nowhere around to offer a countervailing opinion. The guy – who I swear must be one of those guys who refers to himself in the third person – jumps back into the booth alongside Fran. He begins high-fiving her just as a hostess shows up to seat us in the dining room for the long-awaited lobster dinner. I dart ahead to wish the new manager good luck on her promotion and to get a head start on the lobster. Fran, still flush with the knowledge that she took the superior photos, stops to chat with the now-infamous three. The annoying guy – I swear he could be Trump’s next director of communications – makes a few comments to her, unbeknownst to me (I’m already busy choosing my side dishes and tying on my lobster bib). I’m trying to cool off my lobster bisque when Fran tells me that “Mr. Pushy” had said to her, “How long are you married to that guy, and why?” I think it was the “why” that got to me, even as

I tasted the really excellent lobster bisque. After she replied to him by saying, “Fifty-three years,” and going on to extol my virtues (one of which is I’m springing for this lobster dinner) he followed up by asking her if she still felt the same way 30 years ago. Her reply is that she would never have stuck around for the full 53 if she didn’t like me when we hit 30. You must admit that my wife does have logic on her side. By now, I’m steaming more than the lobster that has now been delivered to the table in all its glory. Call it retroactive indignation. I’m finally realizing that this Mooch-wannabe was hitting on my wife. I am not upset enough, however, to put down my fork and return to the lounge to give this guy what for. The story ends happily. First – the lobster was terrific – and Fran, bless her heart allowed me to eat the much larger portion. Secondly, we were able to hail a cab that had a working air conditioner and no empty bags of Fritos in the back seat. And finally, I got sweet revenge on the freaking wise-guy who had hit on my wife. In a manner of speaking, of course. I had a dream that night where I beat the hell out of this guy. I mean I grabbed him by the neck and threw him out of our booth. I think I may have told him where to stuff the photos of his group. And I must say, I looked dashing doing so in my navy blazer. I promised Fran that I would always protect her honor this way. “In your dreams,” she said!

“I’m trying to cool off my lobster bisque when Fran tells me that ‘Mr. Pushy’ had said to her, ‘How long are you married to that guy, and why?’”

Hello, Neumann-Goretti New Catholic school president Joseph M. McColgan talks education, aspirations By LINDSEY NOLEN SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

A

fter Bruce Robinson announced his resignation from the role of president of Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School, 1736 S. 10th St., in March to pursue other opportunities, the school was left searching to find a viable replacement. Months later it announced Joseph M. McColgan has been selected to assume this position, his employment having become effective on Aug. 1. A joint effort between the school’s board of directors and administrators from the Office of Catholic Education and Faith in the Future, McColgan’s selection came as a result of his admirable past achievements in the field of education and beyond. For example, upon graduation from Archbishop Ryan High School in Northeast Philadelphia in 1980, McColgan went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in political science from Villanova University. He has also obtained a master’s degree in business administration from Villanova, and embarked on a second master’s program in international relations from San Diego State University. “Education is important because it’s the basis of everything that we do,” McColgan said. “The world and environment are changing, and education helps prepare us all for tomorrow. Aside from elementary and secondary schooling, McColgan also served as a member of the armed forces from 1984 to ‘89, after earning his bachelor’s degree and before his master’s. In the role of officer, he gave five years of his life to the United States Navy at the Naval Amphibious Base in California, before receiving an honorable discharge. Upon moving forward from his military career, McColgan sought new employment in the field of finance, as he built his managerial resume through working at renowned institutions including Fisher Investments, Wells Fargo Private Bank, SEI Investment Co., Philadelphia Consulting Group, LLC and Merrill Lynch. “Entering the world of investments gave me an entrepreneurial role, and the oppor-

Joseph McColgan has been tapped to lead Ss. Neumann-Goretti Catholic High School as its newest president.

“Education is important because it’s the basis of everything that we do.” – Joseph McColgan tunity to build and create things with an entrepreneurial mentality,” McColgan said. “It was the vehicle that allowed me to do what I wanted to do, but I’ve always been passionate about education. I feel that we owe it to the children and leaders of tomorrow to provide them with the best education possible.” Continuing to advance his managerial prowess, in 2015 McColgan founded Acre-

tive/212°, an early development start-up. Through this opportunity, he was able to utilize his skills to create a “full-service handson Office of Supervisory Jurisdiction.” Ultimately, this service helped the company provide its clients with “professional marketing and personal brand building, strategic and career coaching; professional development; training, as well as objective financial advice

and investment research. “Everything I’ve done has been to solve problems from an entrepreneurial standpoint by looking and situations and finding solutions to make things better,” McColgan said. Further adding to his leadership credentials, the 55-year-old has also been a candidate for public office several times, pursuing a Philadelphia City Council-at-Large seat in 2010-2011, and was a previous board member of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority. Today, he still rests as a board member for the Philadelphia Veterans Comfort House, the East Torresdale Civic Association, Catholic Philopatrian Literary Institute and is co-chair of the Development Advisory Board of Prevent Child Abuse PA. In terms of his of religious affiliations, McColgan remains a parishioner of Saint Katherine of Siena Parish in Northeast Philly. Thus, he plans to use his passion for education and involvement in the church to help the Catholic education at Neumann-Goretti flourish. “I plan to carry on and attempt to fill the shoes of [Robinson],” McColgan said. “He turned the school around and stopped the bleeding. If we need to do some tweaking around the edges we will, but I plan to pick up the ball where he left it and run it down the field.” Despite being in this period of transition, McColgan also plans to continue the school’s focus on positive transformation “under the guidance of teachers and administrators.” Committed to championing collaborative relationships, he intends on assessing all elements of the school while increasing fundamentals including enrollment, development and fundraising efforts. He added he also has some big ideas planned for the future. “We extend our sincere gratitude to the interview committee and all who helped to bring this process to a successful conclusion. Collaboration is a core value in our organization,” Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti stated in a press release. “We believe that Mr. McColgan, along with current administrators at Saints John Neumann and Maria Goretti, are laser focused on equipping saints for life, in this world and the next.”

South Philly teen tunes into musical opportunity By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

P

roving the power of social media, all it took was for 17-year-old Samantha Mulvihill to begin posting videos of herself singing on Instagram for a DJ 1,900 miles away to take notice. Now, after direct messages, followed by months of email exchange and recordings, her first single, “Strikes Tonight,” has hit iTunes, Google Music and Amazon Music. While her musical debut has been a year in the making, Mulvihill’s love of singing and dancing stems back to her childhood when she would perform for her grandmother. Yet after her grandmother’s passing three years ago, Mulvihill once again began recreationally singing alone in her room. “I didn’t tell my parents I had started singing again, but when my mom heard me she suggested I start taking it more seriously,” Mulvihill, who is a resident of 18th Avenue and Oregon Street, said. “I’m serious about going to school and my education though, and I really just wanted to sing for fun.” Keeping her own enjoyment as the sole focus of her singing, Mulvihill decided to simply create her own singing account on Instagram, which she named @SammiRose_sings22, as Sami Rose is her stage name. Upon establishing her platform, she would record 30-second video clips of her

singing covers, including songs by Jessi J, We The Kings, Justin Bieber, One Direction and more. “I would use a lot of hashtags on my videos, and one day DJ SNCN direct messaged me asking me if I would write lyrics and perform a song based on a personal experience for one of his tracks,” Mulvihill said. “We discussed that it would be a very simple verse and a chorus, and how it would be best to record it.” DJ SNCN, whose real name is Luis Fernando Sancén Garcia, asked her to use a soundproof room to record her song so that he could then put her voice to the beat of his track. Although at first Mulvihill had difficulty finding a suitable recording space, eventually her mother’s friend’s husband, Darren Lucis, a member of the local band Midnight Hour, offered to let her use a small recording studio in his basement. Once she had the space needed to record her song, she had no problems completing the vocals for the track. Through her lyrics, Mulvihill chose to express the time in her life when she was attending St. Monica School, 2500 S. 16th St., where her mother was a teacher and her father served as the athletic director. “I felt like I had to live in the shadows because of how people would treat me differently because my parents worked for the school,” Mulvihill said. “People would act like I got all the opportunities

Samantha Mulvihill sports a jacket her family created with her song title, ‘Strikes Tonight,’ written on the back, and a cancer ribbon in honor of her father on the sleeve. because they were there, when really sometimes it was the opposite.” Focused on her transition to Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti Catholic High School, her song “Strikes Tonight,” therefore exposes her feelings of regained opportunity which arose from changing schools. Here, she said she felt as though she was no longer being pushed down because of her name, and that the opportunities at-hand became endless as she was able to in a sense “strike” back.

Released first on Apple Music on July 28, Mulvihill says that she feels so proud of her work and has since seen her song come to trend at the No. 2 spot on DJ SNCN’s Spotify account. Additionally, she has had multiple friends and family members go on to purchase her song from the various platforms it is now available on, adding to her feelings of success. “My grandmother always loved to see me sing, and I know she played a part in helping me gain this opportunity,” Mulvihill said. “It feels amazing to have had the opportunity to record this song, and I’ve been on cloud nine since it came out.” While Mulvihill hasn’t decided to fully dedicate herself to the music business just yet, she remains hopeful that through her motivation and hard work additional singing opportunities will arise. If not, the incoming senior at Neumann-Goretti says she plans to continue striving for greatness in the classroom, and exploring colleges (including Temple and Widener universities) with the potential to later possibly pursue a career in medicine. “I hope to have many opportunities in the future, and I could definitely see myself doing something with music,” Mulvihill said. “I just want to see where this all goes, and until then, I just love hearing my friends and family put my song on.” To listen to or purchase DJ SNCN’s song, “Strikes Tonight” (featuring Sami Rose), visit: https://goo.gl/NbUZGP.

ADVERTORIAL

For vybe urgent care, South Philly is home vybe urgent care operates urgent care centers that provide convenient and compassionate treatment for a broad range of illnesses and injuries. The team consists of board certified physicians and other highly skilled clinicians, who also live and work in South Philly. It’s not only a great place to visit when you’re sick, but it’s also a great place for vybe clinicians to work. Matt Simone, a Clinical Coordinator and Nurse Practitioner at vybe, has always had a passion for helping those in need. We asked Matt a few questions to learn more about him: Q: What is your favorite area of Philadelphia? Matt: I’m very proud of my neighborhood - East Passyunk Crossing. Lots of fantastic people live here and work hard every day to improve the community we call home. It also happens to have the best restaurants in the city. Don’t you agree? Q: What is your favorite workout song? Matt: The best workout I get right now is from a song called “Grapes” that my one-year-old, Sylvie and I shake our hips to. Q: How do you find your vybe? (How do you stay healthy?)

Bruce Hopper, a physician at vybe decided to become a doctor because he loves the variety of treatable medical conditions and finding proactive approaches to keeping people healthy. We asked Dr. Hopper a few questions to learn more about him: Q: What do you like most about working at vybe? Bruce: The “vybe trybe”, is comprised of high quality clinicians, people who are passionate about serving the people of Philadelphia. Q: What’s your favorite Philly sports team or event? Bruce: Though times are tough right now, I am a lifelong Phillies fan and steadfast Eagles fan. Q: What’s your most helpful health tip? Bruce: Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition... especially LCHF (low carb high fat) and nutritional ketosis if you are brave enough. After you experience a visit to vybe it becomes even more clear that vybe is committed to supporting the community and making South Philly healthier. Next time you visit, remember to say hello to Matt and Bruce - they’ll be ready to help you feel better as soon as you walk in!

Matt: I believe it is very important to build a well-balanced lifestyle that includes activities that allow for self-reflection and self-improvement. It also doesn’t hurt to mix in a little fun every now and again!

Darby could lift Philly over the NFC East hump

or a team that made so many significant moves in the offseason to surround quarterback Carson Wentz with weapons, and to arm the defense with an improved pass rush and front four, the Eagles felt the nagging tug of feeling they needed to do more to the roster to compete for the top of the NFC East in 2017. Trading for cornerback Ronald Darby last week may have been the move to put the Eagles in line to win the division for the first time since 2013. Yeah, the price was steep – wide receiver Jordan Matthews averaged 75 catches and 12 yards per reception in each of the three seasons he was here, and a third-round draft pick in 2018 is significant – but the Eagles acquired a legitimate, solid, on-the-rise cornerback in his third NFL season whose contract extends through the 2018 season. Darby has big-time speed, he’s not going to back down from any receiver, and he’s started since his rookie season. “You look around the league and it is a cornerdeficient league,” Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said. “It’s hard to find those guys. It’s hard to find guys

EAGLES INSIDER who have been solid starters in the league and can play at a high level, and teams that have them aren’t really ready to move them.” “He’s got rare speed. His production on the ball, he doesn’t have a high interception number, but his (pass breakup) number is incredibly high. He’s played a variety of coverages. He won a national championship at FSU (Florida State University).” What the Eagles think they’ve learned through the early portion of the preseason is that they have an offense with a lot of firepower, complete with a terrific offensive line, a franchise quarterback in Carson Wentz and the potential to be devastating in the passing game and punishing in the running game. They think they have a front four on defense

Spadaro

that is about eight or nine players deep and that can scare the bejeebers out of quarterbacks and disrupt any and all offenses. But they also knew they had a glaring hole at cornerback, one that became more apparent as they went through practice after practice and coached up a young group of players who, collectively, lacked the top-end speed to close on receivers with the ability to stretch a secondary. Enter Darby, who in 2015 was considered one of the best rookie cornerbacks in the league with Buffalo. His play dipped a bit in 2016, due possibly, the Eagles hope, to the chaotic coaching and front-office football structure with the Bills. In Philadelphia, Darby gets a clean slate and the responsibility of being the best cornerback on the team. He’s an immediate starter here and a player whom the Eagles expect to be a difference maker. “I’m going to be aggressive, play fast and get to the ball,” Darby said, giving fans a preview of what to expect. “I have a lot to learn about the de-

“You look around the league and it is a cornerGHÀ FLHQW OHDJXH µ – Howie Roseman fense, but I definitely expect to come in here and do whatever I need to do to help us win games. It’s just a matter of learning the defense and then I’m good to go.” How much of a difference does Ronald Darby make? It’s fair to think, as preseason reaches the halfway point, that the Eagles just set their sights a full notch higher in the wide-open NFC East.
