f Mayor Jim Kenney can punt on whether parking on the South Broad Street median strip should be eliminated, I can, too. Besides I don’t Tom Cardella own a car, so I don’t have an axe to grind on this issue. But may I suggest that if we’re going to keep expanding the city into one big bike path, we start forcing bike riders to obey the traffic rules? Is that too much to ask? Many of the cyclists I see around the city believe they are exempt from stopping at red lights. Bike riders have anointed themselves as anti-pollution saints. Bike ride away, folks, but if you don’t obey traffic rules, you ought to get a ticket... One of the biggest myths in our democracy is that someone is innocent until proven guilty. Most of us pay pious tribute to the presumption of innocence, but few of us actually believe

$lex, can I have ‘Name That Civic Association’ for $800? “This South Philadelphia-based civic group was previously known as the Newbold Neighbors Association.

Do you find yourself suddenly scratching your head trying to figure out the answer? Well, on Aug. 24, the aforementioned entity will provide the solution in addressing this hot topic of South Philly conversation, as members will gather to give their entity a new name — one its constituents expect to encourage unity and acknowledge diversity

within their group’s borders. Over the body’s nine-year existence, the neighborhood designation has seemingly drawn more head scratches than compliments. The Newbold Neighbors Association has dealt with discord over its environs’ existence since most of its turf also sits within Point Breeze, the first recorded mentions of

A Bella Vista occupant is curating a multisensory exhibition based on the host entity’s collection of pre-Braille texts. Review Editor

ew acquaintances, experiences, and situations often remind us that there is far more than meets the eye, but what about when nothing reaches one’s orbs? Throughout her commended career, Teresa Jaynes has found herself fascinated with addressing perception and detailing what we derive from our observations. As the Visual Culture Program Artist-in-Residence for the Library Company of Philadelphia, she has taken on what she dubs a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity in curating “Common Touch: The Art of the Senses in the History of the Blind, a multisensory exhibition consisting of items that document visually im-

paired individuals’ educational journeys and of original pieces that encourage the call to nurture quenchless curiosity. “We really wanted something that would analyze the depth of communication, Jaynes said from the Center City space that is presenting the dual offering through Oct. 21. “I have always had an appreciation for storytelling, and that’s what these components reinforce. They speak to the diverse concept of understanding what we perceive in having exposure to information. The Bella Vista resident relayed that the project stems from enthusiasm for working with historical collections and from a desire to increase her knowledge of the manner in which blind and visually impaired people have adapted to their surroundings and excelled as contributors to society. Holding that “It’s hard to come up with a dead end when conducting Library Company of Philadelphia-situated research, she drew inspiration from the location’s Michael Zinman Collection of Printing for the Blind and set herself to pairing some contents with works that guests will experience via touching, smelling, and hearing. “There’s no doubt that sight is important, but how mandatory should we consider it when it can’t always prove reliable? Jaynes questioned. “In fact, there’s nothing foolproof, so why not investigate how knowledge can become ours through different applications of the senses?

>`S^O`W\U T]` bVS ^`SaWRS\Qg To the Editor: I have always been a huge fan of “Napoleon Dynamite, especially the section of the film that deals with electing the title character’s high school class president. Napoleon backs friend Pedro Sanchez over the snobby Summer Wheatley, with Pedro promising before the student body that “If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true. Three weeks after the Democratic National Convention left town, I have thought more than ever that this slogan could apply to Hillary Clinton. Say what you will about Donald Trump, but Clinton is just an outright charlatan. I have engaged a few of her supporters, and, frankly, I have found myself nauseated when done with them because they are full of generalizations. I expect nothing less, as their candidate relies on them to have people overlook her many flaws. Here in

Philadelphia, we soon will be dealing with the sugary drinks tax. If you ask me, Clinton is trying to tax us all mentally by having us drink her Kool-Aid. She can keep it. Richard Ambrose South Philadelphia

Hopeful for Hillary To the Editor: If you are planning to vote in the general election in November, it is time for a serious evaluation of the candidates before entering the voting booth. May I offer a few suggestions? Would you prefer a president who demeans and ridicules women at every opportunity? If so, vote for Donald Trump.

Did you enjoy watching the news coverage of Mr. Trump mocking a disabled reporter? If you did, Trump is your man. Do you appreciate Mr. Trump’s use of “sarcasm in his speeches? Was it acceptable for him to declare President Obama as the “founder of ISIS? If you agree, Mr. Trump is your candidate of choice. Why does Mr. Trump “like prisoners of war “who weren’t captured? I am still trying to understand his logic. Again, if you share his opinion, your decision is made. Did you think that Mr. Trump treated the Kahn family fairly when he ridiculed Mr. Kahn’s speech at the Democratic National Convention? Did he express any sign of empathy with respect to their grief? If you think that he did, cast your vote for the Republican nominee. Does it concern you that Mr. Trump has lied about his relationship with Russian leader Vladimir Putin? Should he encourage Russia to hack into American cyberspace? Only you can decide. Should Muslims not be permitted to enter the United States based on the mere fact that they are Muslims? If you agree, vote for Mr. Trump. Does a wall really need to be built in Mexico to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the United States? Is it even a possibility that Mexico would pay for it? If you like fantasy, by all means, Mr. Trump will inspire you. Do you agree that Mr. Trump should not release his federal tax returns to the public? Aren’t you curious about his charitable contributions (if any)? Shouldn’t there be full disclosure and transparency for presidential candidates? Apparently, Mr. Trump is “above the law, so feel free to agree with him. Finally, do you think that the election is “rigged, as Mr. Trump has stated repeatedly? If my calculation is correct, the election has not taken place yet. We are still in the middle of summer, and Election Day is Nov. 8. So, how can the election be rigged already? How does Mr. Trump support this theory? Is he preparing an early excuse in the event that he loses the election? Fellow voters, please make an informed

The publication’s selection committee will review all entries, with the best ones to receive profiles that will run in our very special Oct. 13 Fall Guide. Previous selections are not eligible. In 250 words or fewer, tell us the story of your worthy candidate who resides or works in South Philadelphia, and send it to either bgelman@bsmphilly.com or jmyers@southphillyreview.com. The entry deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 19. SPR Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

A 3 a.m. bike ride took a scary turn for a cyclist who became a thief’s victim in Lower Moyamensing. On Aug. 8, the complainant was riding her bicycle on the 2100 block of South 13th Street when she needed to stop at Snyder Avenue for a red light, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. 7) Marian Anderson: To know the history of South Philadelphia, one must be a student of its contributions to the music world. Like Lanza, Anderson was a nonpareil whose achievements make one grateful that she never saw her gender and race as reasons to regard herself as inferior to males and Caucasians. If she had not chosen to challenge her register, how little lasting change we might have experienced. 6) Kenny Gamble: Hailing from South of South, like Anderson, Kenny Gamble has joined the contralto in becoming a music industry pioneer, with enshrinement in the Dance Music, National Academy of Songwriters, and Rock and Roll halls of fame as proof. What if he and co-writer Leon Huff had just settled for minor involvement in the business? Who else would have picked up the slack? 5) Frankie Avalon: I met this West Passyunk legend in 2012 and still smile over how courteous he was. Had he not believed in his range, not only would admirers not have opportunities to reminisce, but I would not have chances to treat my pasta to his family’s Avallone Tomatoes! 4) Larry Fine: This Queen Village son proved a knockout as a Stooge, but what if he had continued to lace up his gloves and follow his boxing ambition? Had he done so, I am sure he would have attacked rib cages with as much vigor as he tickled funny bones. 3) David Brenner: I will never grow tired of recalling and writing about my December 2013 phone interview with this Dickinson Square West comedic giant. During it he said, â€œâ€Ś the day I would like to see is where there are no stand-up comedians because people are enjoying their lives so much and are finding laughter within their own friends and family.â€? How thankful I am that he contributed to the initiation of laugh lines that my son’s antics will surely make more prominent. 2) Jerry Blavat: Seventy-six years old and still going strong, the Geator with the Heater has built a 56-year career in radio. The airwaves have changed but this South Philly product’s gumption has not waned. Could anyone imagine how bland our lives would be minus the Boss with the Hot Sauce? 1) Frank Rizzo: Love him or hate him (and my Facebook page proves that plenty of folks have VERY solid estimations of him), Frank Rizzo has become a huge element to one’s comprehension of South Philly’s grit and stand-for-no-nonsense attitude. Had he even thought to tone down his larger-than-life personality, whom would many have to hold as a hero and whom would others vilify as a false savior? Thanks to South Philly’s cultural and critical identity, Rizzo will forever be the polarizer who unites us. SPR Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com or ext. 124. completely comprehend the contempt that some athletes face, but I have never valued the venom that people have spit at Tim Tebow. The 29-year-old quarterback, who last year sought a roster spot with the Eagles, recently announced a desire to play baseball. The vitriol has been brutal, but the man has athletic talent, so I applaud him for not giving up on his God-given gifts. Because of his news and connection to South Philly, I started to wonder about local products who achieved stardom or renown in their fields. I pondered “what might have been had they made different career choices. Here are the results of my musings. 10) Edward “Babe Heffron: In 1942, this Pennsport native joined America’s World War II campaign at 19 years of age, serving as a private with Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army. His efforts and those of his peers inspired the 2001 miniseries “Band of Brothers, which captured multiple Emmy victories and a Golden Globe triumph. What if he had completely elected for a far less patriotic and therefore much safer existence as a waterfront worker, which is what he became after his involvement in the conflict? Might our cause have suffered? 9) Fr. Joseph Kelley: His will be the lone name on this list of which millions will not be aware, but the thousands who have interacted with the product of the 900 block of Pierce Street and pastor of St. Monica Parish can certainly sing his praises. I have known Fr. Kelley for 12 years and have never met a more gregarious and insightful man of the cloth. Thank God for having given him a vocation to serve. 8) Mario Lanza: How often have you met someone who just seemed destined for a certain career? When I think of those rare individuals who naturally gravitate to and succeed in a field, I think of Lanza, whom anyone with even marginal hearing would tout as a titanic talent. Suppose the Bella Vistan had thought of his gift as only a passing fancy. His death at 38 has already inspired so many lamentations that I shudder to think what my supposition might lead a few of you to envision.

Garces acknowledged that the July 27 voting result made even more apparent the frustration that the name “Newboldâ€? engenders and stated that next week’s open-tothe-public meeting will dwindle down suggestions for a name, a move that he hopes will work to create an association that is as diverse as the neighborhood. “There’s always an element of exclusion to a civic association because of boundaries,â€? he noted. “With us, however, we don’t want that sense of being an outsider ever to be felt by the people within our designated area.â€? ment, as many residents had not known of the individual territories or preferred to refer them as a whole, simply South Philly. As the Newbold Neighbors Association’s website states, the City of Philadelphia does not officially name neighborhoods, meaning “anyone can choose to call where they live Newbold, or choose not to if they desire. Since this publication spotlighted the rising use of the term Newbold, it has occasionally heard gripes and has often asked subjects if they wish to identify as a Newbold or Point Breeze resident. “I’m within the Newbold space, but I somewhat prefer to say Point Breeze, Eliot Braden, of the 1600 block of Tasker Street, said. “I’m all for carving out a new identity, which is what I have read the powers that be wanted to give to the community by coming up with the name Newbold, but I guess I’m a traditionalist even though I’ve not been here long and the tendency is for the less tenured residents to say they live in Newbold. “The main objection to the use of New-

which date back to 1895. “There’s a lot of passion in the neighborhood, Miguel Garces said of the turf representing the area west of Broad Street to 18th Street and south of Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue that he has overseen as civic president since February. “That definitely means respecting what makes people feel uncomfortable and what they want to do to change those feelings. Come 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, board members, having voted late last month 18-5, will unite at the Reed Street Presbyterian Apartments, 1401 S. 16th St., for a general meeting that will work to yield a different name. No matter what they will christen themselves, Garces knows that making their stretch a true space for community engagement will not suffer; rather, he expects the change to champion a call for more involvement. “Our organization knows the importance of connecting people to one another and being a voice for them, the resident of the 1600 block of Manton Street said. “We want this to be their association, and we want to be that advocate for issues that are important to them. The South Philly Review has devoted considerable space over the years, notably a Dec. 2010 cover story, to specifying the spat that many Point Breeze inhabitants have had with Newbold denizens. The former have contended that Newbold, which developer John Longacre coined as an homage to the original name for Hicks Street, reeks of an infatuation with gentrification. Garces stated that debate has died down immensely and that he and his peers have gone about their business as community enhancers. “That’s not to say we’re ever going to be opposed to having a more inclusive makeup, the leader said, noting the desire to add

bold that I’ve heard is that it’s giving another name to places that they have always referred to as being in Point Breeze, Maggie Arvidsson, who grew up on the 2000 block of Dickinson Street, clearly a Point Breeze location, and now calls the 1700 block of Moore Street, a destination that both groups can claim, said. “I’m not going to balk if someone says I’m a Point Breezer, but I prefer to tab myself a Newbold resident. Arvidsson’s native area is undeniably mammoth, with boundaries running from Broad to 25th Street and from Mifflin Street to Washington Avenue. Longacre has stated he dubbed a huge portion of those demarcations “Newbold in part to boost the West Passyunk Avenue commercial corridor. “Our goal is to strengthen the fabric of South Philadelphia through volunteer and civic engagement, the association’s website reveals, adding “We are not interested in renaming neighborhoods. Garces touched on that, stating that though his civic body will remove Newbold from its title, the name “Newbold will not become defunct, especially because of the existence of the Newbold Community Development Corp., which is bounded by Tasker Street to the north and Wolf Street to the south, Broad Street to the east, and 18th Street to the west. With six days until he and other locals unite, the recent appointee to Mayor Jim Kenney’s community schools initiative, which includes Southwark Elementary and South Philadelphia High School, stressed that though residents in the Newbold/Point Breeze nexus have disagreed over even having an alternate neighborhood name exist, the key is continuing to see discourse as a primary helper in strengthening the overall community.

CARDELLA continued from page 1 it. I don’t know that we’ve ever truly believed in this veritable cornerstone of our justice system. But the hypocrisy has gotten worse. We’ve heard that old chestnut that a prosecutor can indict a ham sandwich. The meaning is that it’s easy for any self-respecting prosecutor to get an indictment out of a grand jury. The defense has no voice in grand jury proceedings and no chance to cross-examine witnesses. Despite the fact that an indictment means only that the prosecution has presented enough “evidence to warrant a case going to trial, much of the public views an indictment as if it were a guilty verdict. But as I say, things have gotten even worse... It seems that even an indictment isn’t necessary anymore to presume guilt, just being charged is enough. Heck, you don’t even have to be charged; just being investigated is considered equivalent to being found guilty. Numerous examples abound from every walk of life. John Dougherty (Johnny Doc) and Local 98 are being investigated, scream the local news - must be guilty, right? Not only is Dougherty presumed guilty, but let the speculation begin on whether there’s something fishy about his ties to the Mayor, right? Ask Donald Trump supporters about Hillary Clinton, and they robotically respond, LOCK HER UP!! She must be guilty of something--Benghazi (17 hearings later, the Republicans found zilch)--the e-mails, for which the FBI Director concluded no indictment was warranted, tell that to Sean Hannity. And on and on it goes until the presumption of innocence becomes the presumption of guilt, even if the charge is only a rumor posted on someone’s Twitter page... And yeah... I wrote some columns criticizing the late Frank Rizzo during his tenure as mayor. No, I’m against any attempt to remove the statue honoring him. If people though enough of Rizzo’s reign as mayor and commissioner of police to erect the statue in the first place, nothing has happened since then to justify taking the statue down. No startling revelations. Only new sensitivities. I sympathize with some of those sensitivities. Some of them. Leave the Rizzo statue alone. He meant different things to different people in this city, but no one can deny

that he was and is an important part of this city’s history... Here’s something that has always boggled my mind: How upset some white folks can get when a minority moves into their neighborhood, but yet, these same individuals can move into a new development in South Jersey where minorities live next door to them and they don’t have a problem. They sometimes even become best buddies with the minority family next door. Just sayin’... Have you seen John Turturro in HBO’s “The Night Of? Doesn’t his character remind you just a bit of Peter Falk’s Columbo? It’s more than the old raincoat each character wears. Both Turturro’s John Stone and Falk’s Columbo have depth and wisdom that belie their ragged appearance. I’m not drawing any comparisons between the two series, as they are quite different. “The Night Of is as gritty as it gets, and some of the actors from the celebrated series “The Wire are sprinkled throughout the cast. The late James Gandolfini was originally cast in the leading role, but with his 2013 passing, the part had to be rewritten for Turturro. The best TV series of the summer... Here’s another theory on why, at least at this writing, Trump is tanking in the polls. We’re tired of him. He’s worn us out. Talk about overexposure. It’s not any one thing that he’s said or done, although he didn’t do himself any favors taking on a Gold Star mom and dad. It’s the totality of what he’s said and done. It’s the fact that we can’t get away from him. He’s like one long political ad that runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All of us knew someone like Trump when we were growing up. He’s the guy with whom you hung on the corner who always bragged that he had the hottest babes and could pick all the winners at the track (you had to take his word for it after the fact). You couldn’t win an argument with him because he’d just keep yapping. Finally, you would excuse yourself and walk away until the next cringeworthy time he came around. The guy never could play a lick of touch football or hit a half ball. He even wore taps on his shoes. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/cardella.

The popular neighborhood scored the top ranking in a look at the best places to live in Philadelphia. ÂŽĂŠ0g 8]aS^V / 4]\bO\OhhO Review Contributor

@

anking and review site Niche.com annually publishes a list ranking the country’s “best places to live, and South Philly’s own Bella Vista took the top slot in Philadelphia, beating out other Southbound neighborhoods Passyunk Square and Hawthorne, which finished second and third respectively. Founded in 2002 by Luke Sherman, Niche’s predecessor CollegeProwler.com first began publishing information relating to demographics, departments, and every other piece of information that a future college student or transfers could want to make such an important decision. With the World Wide Web still relatively new, the website was one of the first of its kind allowing current and former students at colleges across the country a voice to rank their school on numerous categories to aid the next generation. As the amount of information available grew, so did the website, as the current version now known as Niche.com, which also placed Queen Village in fourth and Dickinson Square West in ninth, provides data for every level of schooling and vital statistics about neighborhoods throughout the country. Bella Vista, which runs from Sixth to 11th streets and from Washington Avenue to South Street, earned an “A rating highlighted by high property values, a low crime rate and impressive education level with 62 percent of residents having a bachelor’s degree or higher towering over the national average by 33 percent. The neighborhood’s exceedingly low crime rate compared to the country’s overall rate is a testament to residents working together in harmony with police through the Bella Vista Neighbors Association. Though the civic plays a large part in helping to keep the community safe, the group has many other functions that keep the community thriving. “Our goal is to maintain Bella Vista as a safe, beautiful, and vibrant community. We help coordinate and augment the delivery of police and city services, coordinate street clean-up days, distribute recycling bins, promote dialogue with our elected officials, host social events, and produce semimonthly general meetings on a variety of rotating topics, association president Eugene Desyatnik, a

resident of the 700 block of South Mildred Street, said regarding the BVNA’s responsibilities. In keeping Bella Vista safe, beautiful, and vibrant, the home values remain outstandingly high at $327,593, eclipsing the national average of $176,700 by $150,893, and that success continues to make Bella Vista a hot sell in the property market. Desyatnik sees the interest as an inclusive effort, going on to say “We are seeing increased development to meet a perceived increase in demand for housing in the area, combined with strong community involvement from life-long residents. Though Bella Vista has garnered national recognition, that may be hard to believe from its modest start. The section of the city whose name translates in Italian as “beautiful view was home to many Italian immigrants looking for a better life in America. The Palumbo family, which both neighboring Palumbo Recreation Center and The Academy at Palumbo are named for, was a vital part of the area’s growth as it built boarding homes for new inhabitants. The Italian Immigrants banded together to make some of the most profitable and well-renowned business and landmarks, highlighted by the iconic Ninth Street Italian Market. Separating from the early years, more diversity has changed the landscape but not the quality of places and people, as Bella Vista became a snapshot of America and its strengths in its differences. Epiphany “Pip De Luca, owner of the market’s award-winning Villa Di Roma, remains a link to his community’s Italian roots and its modern changes. The lifelong resident of the neighborhood did not need his community quantified by numbers on a website, preferring to focus on his neighbors’ qualities, as he said “As far as I’m concerned, I always know [Bella Vista] was. It was always a safe place to live and with the Italian Market, you got a chance to see all kinds of people every day, so you had variety, and different ethnic backgrounds that came in during the years, which were all hard working people. With “beautiful view continuing to be a great place to live, it would be difficult to find one of De Luca’s neighbors would that dispute his claim that “It (Bella Vista) is perfect. SPR Comment at southphillyreview.com/news/features.

Senses of security A Bella Vista occupant is curating a multisensory exhibition based on the host entity’s collection of pre-Braille texts. ŽÊ0g 8]aS^V ;gS`a Review Editor

ew acquaintances, experiences, and situations often remind us that there is far more than meets the eye, but what about when nothing reaches one’s orbs?

PHOTOS

B?<;IJOB;I The intersection of history and a new world of tactile expression commenced in April, with the run serving as the successor to her inaugural interaction with The Library Company. 2014’s “The Moon Reader likewise found Jaynes consulting Zinman’s collection in creating two books that invited patrons to learn the eponymous raised-letter writing system for the blind invented by educator William Moon. Another analysis of the nature, foundations, and limitations of perception and an attempt to look at historical and contemporary connotations of art, that work bred an urgent urge to devote more attention to the chronicled population’s explorations of selfhood and desires for full lives, two wonderful gifts that society often contends such figures can never maximize. “Investigating sources then struck me even more resolutely as a form of play, Jaynes said of inspecting Zinman’s accumulated helpers. “It all then became a sifting process that reverberated with me as I contemplated what I should add. “At its heart, ‘Common Touch’ is the story of an artisan, a mathematician, a composer, and a surveyor, an exhibition aid explains, noting that the artist used their accomplish-

ments to develop “first person constructions that rely on geometric and abstract forms that proved fundamental resources in educating 19th-century sightless individuals. One such element, an embossed paper owl sculpture constructed through her use of passages from blind authors, is particularly powerful, with all of the components as exemplary promotional guides in making everyone refrain from indulging in generalizations. “We’re stressing the nature of a full sensory experience, the curator said. “Being blind or visually impaired is a hindrance, yes, but it’s not a sentence to a joyless life. Through an exhibition that looks at perception, I hope people are able to perceive that we’re all immensely gifted. THANKS TO HER ceramicist mother, Jaynes grew up with access to “a bazillion kinds of materials. Deeming everything fair game, the Dallas-bred seeker also came to rely on her grandmother’s penchant for telling stories, with the tales anchored in exploring the lives of tireless women. “Those stories became my stories, and I loved getting a new narrative, the grateful

practitioner said of using those yarns to inspire a quest to add her voice and talent to the art world. “What also helped was growing up in a very important and pivotal social era through which women could realize that their possibilities were fascinating and robust. Noting that her ilk needed “a certain willingness to swim upstream, Jaynes decided to flow with Philadelphia’s current, earning her master of fine arts degree from Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. In the 35 years that she has resided in the metropolis, with 26 of them in Bella Vista, she has become a devotee of its gritty and accessible identity and has certainly seen each second as a chance to challenge the status quo, most notably through co-founding and working as the executive director for Philagrafika. “Philadelphia initially drew me in because of the mindblowing qualities that I found in coming to understand what makes it tick and what motivates its residents, Jaynes explained. “Fast forward a few decades, and I find it even livelier and compelling. For someone who loves stories, I can’t lose no matter when I go. Along with Philagrafika, the 1999 Pew Fel-

lowships in the Arts recipient has generated affiliations with, among others, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Folklore Project, the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Rosenbach Museum & Library, and the Fleisher Art Memorial, 719 Catharine St., where, in 2012 and ’13, she served as interim director before the site selected Queen Village denizen Elizabeth Grimaldi to lead operations. “When I moved here, I did so because I looked forward to gaining a better sense of the evolution of art, Jaynes, who has also found domestic bliss through her three-year marriage to wife Eileen, said. “Now that I’ve done that to a degree, I want to write a few more chapters and make a few more observations. I believe that I grew up in an immensely important time, and it’s great to explore the results of that period and the ambitions that younger generations have, too. SPR

n “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology), Marvin Gaye laments how cruelly humanity treats the earth. With our recent spate of scorching temperatures, one could easily pen a song about how the sun has chosen to fight back. Water will never wane as a wonderful way to ward off the wacky weather, but Liann Amorose wants another summer staple to be your salvation with her Iced Tea with Lemon and Orange recipe. The resident of the 1800 block of South 17th Street has begun to become a regular contributor to this section of our publication, and it is apparent that she knows the value of finding relief when the climate clobbers us. Pour an exceptionally tall glass of this concoction from the Point Breeze inhabitant, and when you have finished it, go ahead and down another. SPR

onsidering the rapidity with which many people change jobs and careers, one should administer admiration to those whose disposition and desire to maximize a vocation’s possibilities keep them content in a single position. For nearly 30 years, Joe Picariello has devoted his days to delivering on his adolescent promise to take delight in each day as a businessman, with patrons of Wolf Street Pizza & Pasta House benefiting from his diligence. “I enjoy it every day, the Brinton Estates resident said from his Girard Estate-based eatery, 2135 Wolf St., drawing a smile from wife and co-proprietor Victoria. “I’ve set myself to putting in hard work so that I can offer good products. Because of that, time has just flown by, and I’m happy to be in this community to serve these people. Picariello, whose mid-November birthday will fall on the same date that his space opened in 1986, noted that the compact location used to be a vacuum cleaner store. Tending to cravings has successfully replaced addressing messes among locals, with the product of 10th Street and West Moyamensing Avenue proud to sate fellow South Philadelphians’ interest in ingesting his wares. “I’ve been in this field since I was 10, Picariello said, “and I credit my mother [Roccina] and my father [Benito] for helping my vision to become a reality. He and his bride, who also helm Cafe V and Kitchen, 1318 South St., have attracted a tight following owing to geography and gentility. Skill, naturally, has played a part in their success, with Picariello scoring Best of Philly pizza and stromboli honors in ’92. “Our dedication to homestyle preparation helps us to excel, he said of their goods, noting he and Victoria are looking to make even more acquaintances through a third venture. “People appreciate that loyalty to preparing food because they know you’re

taking your time. Picariello chose to share the venue’s Fettuccine di Rocco recipe, which he touted as an easy one for South Philly denizens to duplicate. “Like everything that comes out of here, I definitely stand by its quality, the proud preparer said. “People can actually use whatever pasta they want because anything will work well with the other ingredients.

DIRECTIONS: Cook the fettuccine to package directions. SautĂŠ the butter and the cloves until a brown tinge develops. Add the shrimp, peas, cream, sauce, salt, pepper, basil, and tomatoes, and stir constantly. Incorporate the Parmesan, and return to stirring so as to made the output thick. Add the fettuccine to the sauce, and serve hot. SPR Comment at drink/features.

will follow in the paddle strokes of numerous individuals, as Rivera relayed that the boats have proven far more popular than the ground-based inducers of gregariousness. “With the boats, when the temperatures are nice, there are these beautiful winds that just feel heavenly, the overseer said. “As the weather becomes cooler, whenever that is since it’s tough to say with all of these hot days we’ve been having, I think people will really enjoy everything even more.

means more people who live in and visit the South Philly neighborhood will be able to engage in safe, healthy, outdoor fun all summer long. A visit to wheelfunrentals.com makes apparent that the fun will not end when the summer yields to fall, as weekend and holiday bliss will continue at FDR Park through mid-November, with the amenities returning in April. “When I found out about the possibility of coming to FDR Park to do this, I was very excited, Rivera said as he helped a family to return a double surrey. “As the summer has unfolded, I hope everyone has been having as much fun as I have. Shortly after he stated that, Gil and Louisa Montenegro approached with beaming smiles upon seeing choppers. “We come here every weekend because the scenery is wonderful, the latter, of the 1200 block of Christian Street, said as her husband paid for their rides. “We come here all the time as cyclists anyway, so we just think it’s great to support a company that wants to make the park even more appealing. SPR

THE CITY OF Philadelphia has long striven to increase its offerings to inhabitants, with South Philly an especially fortunate section. Last month, Parks & Recreation opened The Ryan Howard Training Center at The Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 740 S. 17th St., furthering the entity’s commitment to youth baseball and softball. The inclusion of bike and boat rentals in another stretch of South Philly gives further credence to its mission to make everyone healthier and happier. “I am always thrilled to bring more programming options to popular parks like FDR, commissioner Kathyrn Ott Lovell Call 267-698-5624 or 805-650-7770. said, whose employer has been quite gener- Visit wheelfunrentals.com/Locations/ ous to the expanse through its relationship Philadelphia-7. with, among others, the Friends of FDR Park, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Contact Editor Joseph Myers at jmyers@southor ext. 124. o matter the misery-inducing conditions that a sweltering summer can bring, the quest for contentment will always reign supreme, especially among South Philly residents. Inhabitants have had extra reasons to be excited this season, as Philadelphia Parks & Recreation has teamed with Wheel Fun Rentals to offer additional means to be merry at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue. “There’s been a wonderful response to everything, attendant Daniel Rivera said Saturday afternoon as he placed kayaks and peddle boats by the recreational site’s boathouse. “I love that this is making the park more usable to people, especially those who just recently learned about it. The West Philly dweller has worked for Wheel Fun Rentals for two-and-a-half years, helping his nearly three-decadesold employer to further its emphasis on offering “clean, healthy family fun and affordable outdoor entertainment. The City of Philadelphia announced the partnership last month, with Rivera happy to have the chance to venture south. “This is a wasteland to some people in the sense that they’re not aware of everything that they can do here, he said as the sun began its p.m. assault on sweat glands.

“Even on a hot day like today, people will come because this is something different. Wheel Fun Rentals’ website creatively explains the options, noting that one can “feel like a kid again as you achieve lowto-the-ground glory with a Chopper, Quad Sport, or Deuce Coupe. Those choices and the aforementioned aquatic delights join surreys in helping residents to cover many of the green space’s 348 acres with an irrepressible smile. “For the last several years, we’ve offered bike rentals from Boathouse Row in Fairmount Park and from the Independence Visitor Center in Center City, operations director Mark Soto said. “And now, we are pleased to be offering both bike and boat rentals at FDR Park! With the implementation of local diversions, Rivera can proudly state that he has overseen adventures at all three Philadelphia destinations and bore a great grin as he fraternized with the Berenji family as it finished its journey in a double surrey. “This is our first time at this park, and we’re very fond of it, Marjan said as husband Homayon unfastened their son, Dean. “It’s somewhere that we will definitely visit again because our little one wants to go on a boat, but it’s way too hot to try that. When the University City occupants make a return engagement, they will be able to cover the watery wonder that has provided Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park with its nickname as “The Lakes. They
