White power groups have problems, too

W

hite supremacists have come out of the closet. No longer do they wear white sheets when parading in public. Many of us believe it’s because they’ve been emboldened by the tweets of President Trump. There’s a more practical reason. Little known fact: In the past many injuries suffered by KKK members occurred because they tripped over their sheets. It must be difficult seeing through the eye holes, too. I dressed as Casper the Friendly Ghost one Halloween and nearly broke my neck going out the door because my eyes didn’t match up with the eye holes. Besides, white sheets aren’t much of a fashion statement. How much can Michael Kors do with a white sheet? There was a time when the leader of the American Nazi party, George Lincoln Rockwell (he took his middle name from our greatest president and his surname from an American artist who was obsessed with freckle-faced kids), wore a full-blown Nazi uniform.

South PhillyReview Op-Ed Waiting for DeVos: The plot to eradicate public education Mail

By Gloria C. Endres

B

ack in the fall of 2010, a sensational documentary film was released titled “Waiting for Superman.” It promoted the oversimplified notion that American public education has been a gross failure that can be saved only by a free market reform model. Of course the major blame for this exaggerated failure was placed squarely and solely on teachers and their union. Whenever Randi Weingarten, the head of the national teachers’ union, spoke, sinister music was heard. All she needed was a scary cackle to complete the portrait of evil. Administrators, parents and the students themselves were spared any responsibility for failure. Special needs or disabilities did not matter. If only those villainous, incompetent educators could be brought to submission and lose their union protections, defined benefit pensions, seniority rights and tenure, the free market would descend like Superman and magically take care of everything. The star of the film was former chancellor of the District of Columbia School District Michelle Rhee, who had formed a PAC called Students First. She shared the same name with another PAC affiliated with billionaire theocrat Betsy DeVos who had her own school choice organization called American Federation for Children, formerly the Alliance for School Choice. Together, Michelle and Betsy worked hard but failed to get Pennsylvania state Sen. Anthony Williams elected governor of Pennsylvania with his platform of school vouchers. Betsy Prince DeVos, secretary of education, is the wife of Dick DeVos, son of the co-founder of the home products business Amway. Her brother is Erik Prince, founder of the infamous private military contractor Blackwater USA. (Erik’s name has been mentioned lately in connection with taking over private military operations in Afghanistan.) The DeVoses, along with other wealthy families like the Koch brothers and the Waltons, have been working for years to achieve several conservative goals that include: eliminating public education, privatizing Social Security, reducing government regulations, thwarting environmental policy and dismantling unions. Getting government out of their way as much as possible is the ultimate goal. Some, like Betsy, have other theocratic goals also. Let’s not just end secular public schools but replace them as much as possible with Christian-centered education. If she could, she would replace science with religious doctrine. No evolution for her. Climate change is a hoax. Environmentalism is a cult attacking Christianity. School vouchers never passed in Pennsylvania, but we have back door vouchers in the form of Education Improvement Tax Credit “scholarships.”

e-mail

These tax-supported scholarships circumvent our state law forbidding money to go to sectarian education by using the device of private organizations that indirectly funnel corporate money to private schools. The corporation meanwhile gets a 90 percent tax credit. The state legislature keeps increasing the funding for these scholarships. In Philadelphia, for example, thanks to EITC money, there are 15 former parochial schools that have been converted to an independently run group called Independence Mission Schools. Saint Thomas Aquinas at 18th and Morris is one of them. Most of their students are poor and non-Catholic. Also, students who attend local diocesan high schools such as Saints Newman-Goretti are eligible to apply for these scholarships. Please note that EITC recipients are not required to take state standardized tests. Another form of “back door” vouchers is of course charter schools. Most of the charter schools in Pennsylvania exist in the School District of Philadelphia. There is a scene in “Waiting for Super-

E D I TO R I A L C A R TO O N

man” where tense, hopeful children wait in an auditorium to hear if their lottery numbers are called and they can escape their inferior public school for a better education in a charter school. The movie never mentions the many charter schools that fail to provide adequate education or simply go out of business. It is all about saving these children from the pit of ignorance otherwise known as “government schools.” Betsy De Vos is not evil. She is just an ideologue. When she found out there is a rule called Title IX that would have disregarded due process when dealing with so-called college date rape, she moved to end it. That was the right thing to do. But when it comes to public education, she has only her personal world view to guide her. She has never attended, taught or sent her children to public school. But she is part of the radical religious right that believes it is essential to separate school from state. DeVos and her family have been top contributors to the Republican Party. She spent a fortune promoting a voucher initiative that failed in her

own state of Michigan. At a time when this country is becoming super sensitive to segregationist missions, many attempts to introduce “school choice” are falling on deaf ears. Citizens are awakening to the fact that vouchers, like charter schools, guarantee nothing. A student with a voucher has no privileged entry to a school that has special admissions standards. Likewise, charter schools still have their lotteries and other criteria for admissions. The notion of school choice is basically a hoax. The only system that remains open, democratic and free to all is the public school system. If we can keep it. Meanwhile, Secretary of Education Betsy Prince DeVos remains undeterred. She has more than three years left to advance her cause. Her president has already signed legislation dismantling many environmental regulations. He openly agrees with her about climate. He has no time for unions. He chose her on purpose to lead the Department of Education to give her the biggest platform for her agenda. But will it leap tall buildings?

RIZZO: Vandalism to mural, statue, have people debating ex-mayor

<<Continued from page 1 the death of David Jones, a 30-year-old who was shot in the back by a Philadelphia police officer in June) on the mural, but the wording was quickly covered by city workers in the daylight that followed. This act of vandalism came just two days after the words “black power were spray painted on the Rizzo statue located at the Municipal Services Building. Since then, Wali Rahman, a Germantown resident who ran for mayor in 2011, was arrested and charged with this act of vandalism. Despite the unarguable illegality of vandalizing city property, public figures and community members alike have supported various sides of the argument over whether the Rizzo memorials should remain on display. To some, the statue and mural are historical features and celebrate a determined and hard-working politician and city man, while to others they demonstrate the celebration of a man who exhibited a harmful, prejudiced agenda. “I don’t think we should be memorializing [Rizzo], Tony Lawton, a Roxborough resident who was shopping at the Italian Market on Saturday afternoon, said. “My understanding of him is that he was a racist and perpetrator of police brutality. Although Lawton couldn’t think of another prominent Philadelphian whose image should go up on the wall instead, he suggested that for now it remain blank.

Similarly, the mural’s original artist, Diane Keller, commented that although she also doesn’t have a solution in mind, she believes now is a good time for the community to have the conversation regarding what should be done with the Rizzo mural. On the other hand, Gloria Endres, who was a young teacher when Rizzo was police commissioner, remembers a time of great turmoil throughout Philadelphia, especially after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in April 1968. During this

“Now it’s a 2017 version of Dodge City. Although Police Commissioner Ross is a good top police commissioner, he doesn’t get a lot of support, Friel, a Philadelphia resident, said. As for possibly moving the statue, perhaps it should go in the Italian Market or in the lobby of the new police administration building at Broad Street and Callowhill Street, he added. Councilwoman-at-large Helen Gym took to Twitter on Monday, Aug. 14, to oppose the statue and mural. Then, on Saturday, Aug. 19, she called for a “respectful public process to move the statue to a better location. Gym also referred to the statue and mural as “the most vandalized in the city. “I condemn vandalism. It’s illegal and the perpetrators will be charged accordingly, added Mayor Jim Kenney. Yet, while the mayor voiced he doesn’t personally like the statue, his office commented his opinion isn’t the only one that counts. This is because the city has a pre-established policy on the decommissioning of public art, which includes initially soliciting public input. “The policy was first established in 2012 and updated in 2015, Lauren Hitt, Kenney’s spokeswoman, said. “Before we begin the process laid out [in the policy], we are going to solicit public input on what Philadelphians would like to see for the future of the statue. If we ultimately move forward with requesting a change, that public input would inform the petition that the public art director transmits to the Art Commission. She added the mayor’s office will be figuring out the structure to solicit public input in the coming days.

“My understanding of [Frank Rizzo] is that he was a racist and perpetrator of police brutality. – Tony Lawton “He was often uncouth or cruel, but he kept us safe.– Gloria Endres time, she also recalls Rizzo having come down hard on lawbreakers and rioters, helping the city to avoid the worst cases of urban unrest that had been affecting other cities across the country. “There was also a proliferation of street gangs and youth violence during that time, Endres said. “Mayor Rizzo never gave up upholding law and order, and citizens of all races understood that. He was often uncouth or cruel, but he kept us safe. Another Philly resident during Rizzo’s tenures as both police commissioner and mayor, Joe Friel, added he believes every citizen has the right to protest and demonstrate, but defacing the statue and mural is wrong. He continued that under Rizzo’s leadership he believed the city was safe to live in.

he name may have changed, but the theme – PIZZA – remains the same. On July 16, 2009, the South Philly Review introduced the neighborhood to the Pizza Olympics, a fresh-out-of-box concept in which 600-plus attendees sampled slices from some of their favorite neighborhood spots while a panel of judges deliberated over best crust, topping, sauce and a variety of other tasty categories. The crowd filled Galdo’s, 1933 W. Moyamensing Ave., for the three-hour sampling session that featured pies from Adrianna’s, Celebre’s, City Pizza, Francoluigi, Key Pizza, Napoli Pizza, Not Just Pizza, Pizzi Pizza, South View Pizza, Venuto’s Old World Pizza, Pizza Shack, Wolf Street Pizza, Cacia’s Bakery, The Pizza Place, Chickie’s and Pete’s, Rustica and J&J Pizza. to pose for pictures, sign autographs and chat with fans. The panel of judges consisted of Geno Vento of Geno’s Steaks; Phyllis Stein-Novack, former Review food columnist and restaurant critic; Tom Cardella, long-time Review columnist; radio personalities Glenn Kalina and Jenn Ryan; and Lou Galdo, owner of Galdo’s Catering. Fast-forward to present day, and it’s time to talk pizza again, as in the South Philly Review’s Eighth Annual Pizza Palooza presented by Liscio’s Bakery taking place tomorrow night (6-9 p.m. Aug. 24 at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd.). For those wondering about the name change, we have dropped the competition element as all of the participants are winners. Just like the first one, King Arthur is back to play some tunes. Come and check it out. This way you will not have to try and remember what you were doing on that Thursday night in the summer of 2009.

These pies took the cake

Thursday night dinner plans call for pizza

Y

By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

es, the Philadelphia Eagles are playing the Miami Dolphins at home tomorrow night in what will amount to another meaningless preseason football game. Sure, the diehard fans will still be there, and there are roster decisions to be made, but you can read all about the game on Facebook and Twitter. Besides, they are not playing the Cowboys, Giants or Redskins. The South Philly Review is serving up a much tastier alternative tomorrow night. It’s called the long-awaited return of Pizza Palooza (many remember it by its former name, the Pizza Olympics). The South Philly Review’s Eighth Annual Pizza Palooza presented by Liscio’s Bakery is taking place at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd., 6-9 p.m. tomorrow night (Aug. 24). If you love pizza — we are talking pepperoni, white, mushroom, veggie and other eye-opening creations — this is a can’t miss event. This summer night out on the town is about two things: enjoying delicious pizza and entertainment. Come enjoy a slice or two from some of the neighborhood favorites. Maybe there will be a new pizza shop you have been dying to try, but haven’t gotten around to it. This is a golden opportunity to collect

pizza menus for the next take-out night or rate the best samples of the night. The confirmed lineup of participating pizza vendors is: SliCE, 1180 S. 10th St.; Cacia’s Bakery, 1526 W. Ritner St.; South View Pizza, 367 Durfor St.; Key Pizza, 1846 S. 12th St.; City Pizza, Front Street and Snyder Avenue and 2700 S. 16th St.; Millies Burgers, Steak & Shakes; 1441 W. Shunk St., and South Bowl, 19. E. Oregon Ave.; and Steak ‘Em Up, 2600 S. 11th St. Hungry yet? This is an all-you-can-eat foodie event. King Arthur will be hosting the event. The Mummers will also be making a special appearance. Ready to join the party? Admission to this annual summer bash is only $10 in advance and $15 at the door for unlimited samples while supplies last. There will be a cash bar. There is also a family ticket RSWLRQ ²௘ IRU WZR DGXOWV DQG XS WR IRXU NLGV and under). For those who would like to reserve a table, the cost is $300 and will include pizza samples and 10 drink tickets for the table. Free parking is available at Penns Landing Caterers. Pizza Palooza is being presented by Liscio’s Bakery, and sponsored by Methodist Hospital, Metro PCS and Inspire Energy. To purchase tickets, visit sprpizza.upcomingevents.com. <<Continued from page 1 Nazi uniforms fell out of style when American Nazis couldn’t get them dry cleaned. Who knew there were so many liberal dry-cleaning establishments? I heard rumors that one dry cleaner poured borscht on Nazi uniforms instead of dry cleaning it. And how do you get borscht stains out? Beats me. It used to be that the Department of Justice took the “justice part of its name very seriously. Under Attorney General Jeff Sessions, the DOJ mainly worries about whether you’re dark-skinned and illegal. Perhaps the two facts that fill most white supremacists with pride is that they are white and legally born here. Hence the lack of interest in them by the DOJ. It’s tough making the case that you’re superior based only on the accident of birth and color. Getting higher test scores would be a start. One deranged white terrorist drove a Dodge Charger into a crowd of counter protesters and forced the White House to react. President Trump was very upset when he found out the murder car was manufactured in a plant outside the United States. We don’t give our president enough credit for his subtlety. Why do you think he began his statement about the violence in Charlottesville (I’m talking about his third attempt) with an economic message? In just a few short sentences, Trump took care of condoning racial violence and pushing his message to get auto makers to manufacture their damn cars here in America. Was Barack Obama ever that clever and concise? The media made a big thing about the fact that it took awhile for the president to specifically condemn white supremacists. Just because Abraham Lincoln spoiled us for all time when he got the Gettysburg Address right in one take, do we have to hold every other president to the same standard? Trump has admitted that he is second behind Lincoln in being the most presidential president ever. Although if Lincoln had been forced to deal with CNN, it might have been a different story. Can you imagine Anderson Cooper second-guessing Lincoln on denying habeas corpus or for removing Gen. George B. McClellan? Just how would

Honest Abe have liked Alec Baldwin doing an impression of him wearing a stovepipe hat? Trump is held to a different standard, my friends. David Duke should stop complaining! Duke got hot and bothered because Trump finally condemned white supremacists. Wonder how Duke enjoyed being in obscurity when Obama was in the White House? Who is personally responsible for your big comeback, buddy? Before Trump came to office, Duke couldn’t get enough marchers together to create a traffic jam on Snyder Avenue. Just a few years ago, most white youths thought David Duke was a highly-rated prospect in the Phillies farm system. Now Trump’s in office, Duke’s never had it so good. His mug is all over cable TV. Who does Duke think made birtherism popular? What does he think candidate Trump meant when he said, “Let’s make America great again? Hell, Duke didn’t even originate the idea about whites taking back our country. I think that was the late governor of Alabama, George Corley Wallace. If it wasn’t, it should’ve been. I’m still trying to square the idea of white supremacy excluding our Jewish friends. I don’t know if that’s a nod to the neo-Nazis or if it’s something deeper. One problem that white supremacists have is recognizing Jews. I can attest to that fact. When I was a kid I was mistaken for Jewish and punched around by some white kids. It could’ve been because I lived across from a Jewish deli or someone found out that I have a fondness for good Nova on a bagel. Who can figure? Another time, my wife and mother were mistaken for Jews in a Center City restaurant by some skinheads. I happened to be broadcasting from the restaurant at the time and the skinheads kept pelting my family with food. One of them called my wife, a “Jewish princess, even though my wife insists that she still has to wash my underwear a couple of times a week. To my wife’s credit, she never denied being Jewish. It isn’t easy being an anti-Semite when you can’t figure out who is a Semite. Hating the wrong people must be frustrating for white supremacists. Not as frustrating, though, as not having anything to feel superior about.

The Philadelphia Police Department released surveillance video related to a July 30 incident. An unknown black male, who was approximately 5-foot-11 and 20 years old, entered a Wawa located at 1602 S. Christopher Columbus Blvd. While two employees were inside the office, the suspect, who was wearing a white hooded sweat-

shirt with black lettering reading “BATTLE on the front, entered the office and pointed a handgun at a 32-year-old female employee and demanded money. After complying with the suspect’s demands, a second employee handed the suspect an unknown amount of money, and the suspect ordered both employees to lie on the floor while he fled west on Morris Street to a getaway vehicle. The suspect was last seen traveling south on Interstate 95. With any information about this crime or this suspect, please contact: South Detective Division: 215-686-3013.

LIFESTYLES

Emerging as a Point Breeze leader By LINDSEY NOLEN SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

H

aving strong community leaders is an essential part of building a successful community, and after 12 years living in Point Breeze, Jennifer Devor decided she wanted to take a personal stake in ensuring her neighborhood’s success. Devor recently has been nominated and awarded the 2017 Forum of Executive Women Award for Emerging Women Leaders. The purpose of this award, which is in its 18th year, is to seek out inspiring women from the Philadelphia region who demonstrate “leadership and accomplishment in their careers as well as high potential for future growth.” Devor has become extremely involved in the community endeavors of Point Breeze and the city as a whole over the years. Through her full-time job as director of partnerships at Campus Philly, Devor works to retain college talent in the Greater Philadelphia Region leading to a greater local economy, talent pipeline and culture overall. To assist in this communityfocused endeavor, she must work with different entities throughout the region, from government relations to arts and culture organizations, to help connect students and employers. “Being involved in the community is a very clear passion of mine and one that I’m very vocal about,” Devor, who lives on the 1500 block of South Carlisle Street, said. “I’m a block captain on my street, a committee person and I have formed great working relationships and friendships with the diverse populations that make up Point Breeze.” In solidifying these relationships, Devor had crossed paths with three women in particular who pursued nominating her for the Forum of Executive Women Award. One of these women is Michelle Freeman, president and founder of Witty Gritty Marketing & Events, who is a colleague of Devor’s and who has collaborated with her on several projects while working within the social impact and startup communities in Philadelphia. The other two women who nominated Devor for the award include Ivy Olesh, executive director at Playworks, and Jacqueline Zavitz, principal of Heidrick & Struggles. Devor knew Olesh from their mutual involvement in the city-wide movement of community members supporting local elementary schools known as the Friends of Neighborhood Education. “When [Olesh] and [Zavitz] decided to collaborate on a nomination, [Olesh] introduced [Zavitz] and I, and after we met they submitted my name to the Forum,” Devor, 32, said. “[Olesh] just recently

Childs Elementary School K-8 in Point Breeze.” Devor believes Freeman, Olesh and Zavitz chose to nominate her because she is a “doer,”

and that the three women also possess that quality. Furthermore, she thinks they similarly noticed this quality in her, which is why they are able to get along and work together so well. “Throughout my career in Philadelphia, I’ve done a good job and have tried to build bridges between residents of old and the new Philadelphia,”

Devor, a native of Parsippany, N.J., said. “This is critical for the city right now, and I believe [Freeman, Olesh and Zavitz] recognized the timeliness of these qualities.” After siphoning through the list of nominations and deliberating on who should be selected to receive this honor, The Forum of Executive Women chose to award it to both Devor, and Kelly Devine, a senior marketing specialist at Comcast Cable Communications. Since The Forum of Executive Women is an organization created to leverage and empower women leadership in business throughout the City of Philadelphia, upon winning this award, Devor and Devine will receive a customized professional development experience, facilitated under the leadership and guidance of Forum members. “We are delighted to honor Jennifer and Kelly, who demonstrate the qualities that The Forum seeks in future women leaders,” Nancy O’Mara Ezold, chair of The Forum Award Committee, said. “Our Leadership Development Program will enable Jennifer and Kelly to tap into the expertise of Forum members who will share lessons from their professional journeys and offer guidance and support to these outstanding awardees.” From here, Devor and Devine will be matched with Lesley Mallow Wendell, president of Rosewood Consulting Group, who will take them through a series of leadership assessments. Although this service is usually very costly, the awardees will receive it free of charge, and after will create a leadership plan based on their results aimed at continuing to evolve their leadership strengths and opportunities to develop these skills. “People say that it’s just an honor to be nominated for this award, but that’s so true,” Devor said. “It’s amazing to be an award winner because of the wealth of resources which the Forum offers. Having been identified by an organization so committed to the success of Philadelphia has made me feel excited about my future.” In the months to come, Devor also plans to fully utilize her award-granted access to the Forum of Executive Women’s membership directory. She also intends on continuing her work at Campus Philly while figuring out the best ways that she can contribute to the continued growth of Philadelphia. “Through this professional development I’ll be able to find a direct path,” Devor said. “I’m happy to represent Point Breeze and South Philadelphia in this realm of the network of professional women.”

Domino’s Sausage, Turkey and White Bean Chili

Taste of Italy

S

ince there are no chili cook-off events happening around South Philly this week, we are offering readers another option — the opportunity to make it at home. It will make for a great game-time meal when the Eagles open against the Redskins on Sept. 10. Domino DeFrancesco, of the 1700 block of South 10th Street, enjoys making his Sausage, Turkey and White Bean Chili. He described the dish as a delicious, hearty, healthy dinner for all tastebuds.

Next month, Brigantessa, 1520 E. Passyunk Ave., and sister restaurant Le Virtù, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave., will be introducing a tempting Benvenuti in Città menu every weeknight, featuring three courses from new executive chef Joseph Voller for $35 per person. The menus will allow guests to “dine along” during Voller’s upcoming research tour of Southern Italy with owners Francis Cratil-Cretarola and Cathy Lee. Soul set to host ArenaBowl XXX Saturday By Al Thompson NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP

T

he Soul defeated the Baltimore Brigade, 69-54, on Aug. 12 to advance to ArenaBowl XXX. Just like the playoff game, it will be played at the Wells Fargo Center, 3601 S. Broad St., on Saturday, Aug. 26 (7 p.m. kickoff). Philadelphia’s entry in the Arena Football League will face the the Tampa Bay Storm (11-4). The Soul won all three games against the Storm this season. Riding a 17-home game win streak, the Soul (14-1) will be playing for their third championship since joining the league in 2004 and defending their ’16 championship title. “I’m proud of all this team has accomplished this season,” Soul head coach Clint Dolezel said after the game. “We have worked very hard to get to this point and I’m excited to defend the title once again.” The Soul’s Darius Reynolds looked very NFLlike leading the receivers with nine catches for 171 yards and six touchdowns. “I just wanted to give us a chance to make plays,” Reynolds said in the Soul’s chaotic locker room after the win. “[Quarterback] Dan [Raudabaugh] had a great night. I can’t take all the credit for it. Dan made a lot of great throws from the pocket. Our line gave him time to make some great throws.” The touchdown that ended up being the winning score was a wild one. With just under four minutes to go and the Soul leading 55-47, quarterback Dan Raudabaugh, who completed 23-of-35 passes for 324 yards and nine touchdowns, fired a pass to the corner of the end zone where there is a big two-door gate where the all the dance team members, promotional personnel and away team players come and go through. As Reynolds made his leap for the ball, he ran out of arena and, and with a defender draped all over him, went into the gate, which incredibly opened up for him. It appeared to give Reynolds an extra step and allowed him to make the acrobatic catch to put the Soul up for good, 62-47. Reynolds said he was just focusing in the ball, not the wall. “When you are near the sideline you just have to tap your feet,” Reynolds said. “I felt the wall give but I couldn’t let go of the ball. I just decided to hold on to it.” The referees were good with it and the Soul were on the the championship game for the second year in a row. Darius Prince added four receptions for 76 yards and one touchdown, while Shaun Kauleinamoku tallied eight receptions for 66 yards and one touchdown. Offensive lineman Michael Simons, a veteran

The thing with Dan is, he’s the best quarterback in the league. You give him time, he’s going to complete everything. He’s the best.” Every Soul player and coach said they were thrilled to have the title game at home. “Last year we had to go to Arizona to play in

We worked hard all year to make sure we had the ArenaBowl here.” Dwayne Hollis, who is up for Arena Football League Defensive back of the Year, is equally as excited about the home field advantage. “It’ll be a change,” Hollis said. “I’ve been to two neutral sites as a player in the ArenaBowl, and we went out to Arizona last year, it’ll be great to win one at home and celebrate with our fans here at home.” Sources have revealed the Arena Football League is expanding with teams in Albany, N.Y.

and Newark, N.J. Hollis said he heard there may be new teams coming in and obviously was happy to see the league’s gamble with restrictions on who can own an AFL franchise appears to be paying off. “It’s great for Arena Football,” Hollis said. “Once you see Arena Football one time, you’re hooked to it. I know the league has gone through its growing pains, going back to five teams (this year). I just want to give kudos to all the guys who stuck around to play in this five-team league. It’s going to pay off.” Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @thompsoniii

he year was 2015, and Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford had just exited the third preseason game of the summer after completing all of his 10 passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns in a single quarter of play against the Green Bay Packers. It was a heady performance, one that inspired some proclamations of great optimism for the Eagles that season. They were, just like that, in the Super Bowl conversation. A couple of weeks later, the Eagles opened the regular season in Atlanta against the Falcons and managed a paltry three points in the first half and the offense stunk for most of the year and Bradford proved to be what he had been (and continues to be) in his NFL career: Nothing special. As the Eagles prepare for their third preseason game, on Thursday night at Lincoln Financial Field, they do so knowing that, improbably, the defense is ahead of the offense in late August. They know that the running game, expected to be bolstered with the addition of big man LeGarrette Blount, has been underwhelming. They know that the offensive line, projected to be among the very best in the league, has been scrambling to win in the trenches. “It’s been pretty ugly out there at times. I’m not gonna lie,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “We have a lot to clean up.”

GEORGE BENSON AUGUST 26

EAGLES INSIDER The preseason lasts four games, which sometimes feels like four months. Teams do not specifically prepare for the games, nor do they game plan for opponents, and they don’t really care a whole lot about winning the games. What’s important is that teams accurately identify the best 53 players for the regular season and that they get through the preseason as injury-free as possible. Other than that … “I think it takes about a week to get ready for the regular season,” Eagles safety Corey Graham said. “One week of practice and one game and I’m ready to go.” So which of what we’ve seen matters for the Eagles? Well, quarterback Carson Wentz is making great strides, which should be obvious to everyone. The wide receiver corps is much better than it was a year ago. The addition of cornerback Ronald Darby gives the Eagles a legitimate chance to

compete against the passing game, and the defensive front four is as good as the team has had since the Reggie White-led days of the 1980s and early 1990s. Everything else, we’re going to find out starting Sept. 10, when the Eagles play at Washington, where they haven’t won since the 2013 season. Until then, we’ve got two games of preseason football to watch and to overreact to and to wonder how much longer it’s going to take until the real games begin. Preseason football is here and it’s real. But only to a certain extent. “As coaches, we evaluate in the preseason. That’s what I get out of it,” Eagles linebacker coach Ken Flajole said. “I’m just trying to determine the best guys to play linebacker for us this season. Stats and the score of the game, that stuff isn’t all that important to me in these games.” Someday, this four-preseason-games, 16-regular-season-games format is going to change. It just has to change. The public wants more regular season football. Teams don’t need four games to evaluate players they’ve had on the field since April. The injury factor is too high.
