What about us birds? Inspired by a tweet from Heckle and Jeckle, the talking magpies, who agreed to co-author this column. e’re not ones to get involved in political matters us being magpies and such. But we’re very concerned about where this statues controversy is heading. “Heretofore, we’ve always been able to find a nice perch on any statue in the area. Jeckle here particularly likes the Rizzo statue because Big Frank’s outstretched hand makes for a very nice perch. I, myself, have experienced some arthritis in my feet in recent years, a little unusual for a cartoon character, but the big picture studios don’t care about little creatures like me and Jeckle. They’re only interested in keeping their Super Heroes healthy, because they make a lotta money for the studios. No one wants to see a talking magpie battle Superman. I find the attraction of that lummox hard to understand. Speaking for myself, I think I would’ve made it with Lois Lane. And changing in a phone booth? What are phone booths? But Jeckle here tells me that I digress. “The point being that Jeckle and myself See CARDELLA, page 12>>

Students and staff of the Andrew Jackson School were joined by members of the NFL Alumni last week, including former Eagle Hollis Thomas, for the delivery of the organization’s school supplies drive.

Calling a winning play for education NFL Alumni helps students prepare to tackle school year By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

ith the onset of back-to-school season, many elementary students throughout South Philly neighborhoods have readied their new backpacks, notebooks and pencils. However,

as some children don’t have the means necessary to obtain these educational tools, members of the NFL Alumni used their platform to make a special school supply drive delivery to the Andrew Jackson School on Aug. 25. An initiative put together in honor of the NFLA’s Annual Youth of America Week, which took place Aug. 20 to 27, the organization was

able to collect a variety of school supplies for the K-8 public school. Included in the supplies donated to the Andrew Jackson School, 1213 S. 12th St., were backpacks, binders, notebooks, colored pencils, pencils and more. “[This event] is all about the kids as it is the 50th Annual Youth of America Week, and its See JACKSON, page 6>>

The offender, who was roughly 5-feet-8 with a medium build, stuck a black handgun in the complainant’s face and told him to get out of the car and empty his pockets. JACKSON: NFL alumni group lends support to students in need

<<Continued from page 1 motto is ‘Caring for Kids,’” Elvis L Gooden, Sr., interim president/CEO and CFO of the NFL Alumni, said. “This is just one way in which we are able to do that.” Gooden added that he visited the school in February as part of a career day, and it was then he really “fell in love with the school and the kids.” Thus, he felt it was important to come back and show continued support for the school during this NFLA-sponsored youth week, which was simultaneously holding events throughout the country through its 35 chapters. Also making an appearance at the school that morning was Hollis Thomas, a former defensive tackle who played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1996 to 2005. He stopped by to show his support for both the NFLA and its push to help set students up for success. In addressing the school’s students and staff, he explained he remembers as a kid that the best feeling in the world was getting something new. “I wanted to help get these kids started on the right foot [this school year,]” Thomas said. “As a kid, I looked forward to getting a new notebook and new clothes each year. It’s important that these kids get all the tools to help them learn and be successful, and that [the tools] help them take a step in the right direction.” In addition to Thomas’ comments, Dr. Jen Welter, credited as being the first woman to coach in the NFL, relayed to the students that with hard work and determination, they can achieve anything they want. She told the students she hopes each of their notebooks gets filled up with lots of big dreams, and the pens and markers take them as

pinosa said. “I think this is really laying a great framework for the students to have a really successful year.” Espinosa added she is looking forward to this partnership between Jackson and the NFLA, and Gooden stated he is already looking forward to being back at the school next year for career day. Concluding the event, school staff member and Milken Educator Award winner for the 2016-2017 school year Jayda Pugliese expressed it’s nice to see the community come together to support public schools and education. She made note that it takes a village to raise a child and it’s comforting to know the school is so well supported. “I am an extremely big Eagles fan,” Pugliese said. “It’s nice to see these NFL players giving back to the school and showing that they value education and realize that our kids are the future and that they want to set them up for success. These types of events are critical to Philadelphia schools like ours that are overcrowded, underfunded and in need.”

the NFLA delivery to thank the organization for its donation of both the supplies and an additional $2,500. She added that because of this display of generosity, a financial burden will be taken off many of the students and their families who have a “big laundry list of things they need to bring on the first day of school.” “We know that so much of starting off a successful school year is having that stability,” Es-

Yes, many famous names, including the likes of Marian Anderson, Mario Lanza, Eddie Gottlieb, Eddie Fisher and Frankie Avalon are a handful of the notable students that once walked through the halls. But this week’s journey takes us way back to opening day when the school opened in 1907 as the Southern Manual Training High School for Boys. The adjoining girls’ site was added nine years later. <<Continued from page 1 can’t afford to live in Center City if we have to pay those outrageous rents. And buying one of those pricey new condos is impossible, what with the tiny pension that 20th Century Fox gives us magpies to live on. We need free living quarters. And that’s what the statues provide for us. May I remind Mayor Kenney that we’re probably the only residents in Center City who don’t scream that they need a tax abatement. “Look, we’re not dumb. Both of us watch CNN and MSNBC. Jeckle here is in love with Brooke Baldwin, but that’s another story. “We understand that a bunch of good folks are offended by some of these statues. Although Jeckle reminds me that neither one of us ever saw anyone even peek at one of these statues before all this political hubbub arose. If it weren’t for us birds, I think even the Rizzo statue would tell you that without us birds as friends, it would get very lonely just standing here. To tell you the truth, most of the time he finds the pigeons too liberal for his taste. Embarrassingly, though, Big Frank constantly reminds us that we birds are not very discriminating about where we perform our bathroom duties. I keep telling him that it’s nothing personal. A bird has to do what a bird has to do. But you know how Big Frank (he likes when we call him “Big Frank) is all about neatness. I think his is the only statue which has its shoes polished. “About those statues of Confederate generals, I’m not sure any of us birds can tell Robert E. Lee from Stonewall Jackson. And this is a statement that you might not agree with, but I don’t think anyone would know who these southern generals were if they didn’t have an identifying marker. Jeckle has a solution: instead of tearing down these southern statues, just change their markers to show their names as U.S. Grant and Joseph Hooker. On second thought, Jeckle says we better forget about using “Hooker as a name because it might

wind up being a meeting place for “Ladies of the Night. Aside to Jeckle: I don’t think that term is used anymore. That solution wouldn’t work in the South, so I figure they could put up statues honoring heroes of the civil rights movement. Can’t you just imagine how the locals would react to a large statue of Rosa Parks sitting in the front of a bus next to a statue of ol’ Stonewall? “Obviously Jeckle’s solution would not work for Big Frank here. And I’m worried that if they tear down this Rizzo statue, either South Philly secedes from the city or, even worse, the great pasta restaurants would close in protest. Jeckle and I simply could not get by without visiting those dumpsters to get our fill of the al dente noodles that people leave on their plates. And let me tell you a secret about the columnist we’re writing this column with. His father and Big Frank were pals when they were on the force together. While they were calling Big Frank the “Cisco Kid, they were calling Cardella’s father “Pistol Pete. And this columnist wrote a lot of bad stuff about Rizzo while he was mayor leading Big Frank to ask Pistol Pete, “What gives with your kid? But even a stoonad like Cardella believes that nothing good would come from defacing this Rizzo statue and mural. He believes that ethnic pride, not racism, is at the heart of honoring the former mayor. Maybe they can put the statue in Marconi Plaza next to Marconi and Columbus. I think they could get neighborhood town watch volunteers to safeguard the statue. “The only other thing that Jeckle came up with is that they put all these controversial statues in a museum. Call it the Museum Of Controversial Statues. Maybe they can put a tax on healthy beverages to pay for it. I’d love to see them tax almond milk and kale juice. The way things are going the only statue that will be left standing is Rocky. “Let’s face it. Room to roost is at a premium in the Art Museum area. There’s a Limitation of Statues.

FRINGE PREVIEW

The Soul of Philly Fringe By Max Marin SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

C

hained to a bathtub on the floor, Gunnar Montana balances an angle grinder on his groin and begins to free himself from the shackle, his cotton-candy blue European mullet glowing in a shower of sparks. Jessica Daley observes her choreographer with concern, unsure of how she’ll manage this powertool feat into the middle of her dance solo. Montana’s latest dance production, “KINK HAÜS,” kicks off Philly Fringe Festival at the Latvian Society on Sept. 5. For the last three months, he has been transforming this ad hoc theater space into an ultra-queer, underground nightclub, replete with steampunk graffiti and an enormous silicone penis that dangles from the catwalk. A sign reads “REJECTED MATERIAL.” An operatic rock ballad – “Dark Nights” by Dorothy – blasts through the speakers. Montana self-produced his first Fringe show, “Basement,” in 2013 at the Asian Arts Initiative. His budget came out of his pocket at the time.

Photo special to South Philly Review

Gunnar Montana’s latest dance production, ‘KINK HAÜS,’ kicks off Philly Fringe Festival at the Latvian Society on Sept. 5.

After working a restaurant shift, he’d bike down to The Home Depot to buy props for his set. This year, thanks to fans he has garnered over six years of Fringe performances, Montana fundraised more than $11,000 to put on his kinky nightclub fever dream. He’s in the process of starting his own nonprofit dance company. Amid all of this motion, he feels himself getting older and further from the soul of Fringe. Rehearsal is over, and the 28-year-choreographer is fiddling with plastic zip-ties to reconnect the severed lengths of chain. Each year the production value of his shows gets bigger. He transformed this same space into a fairytale wonderland for 2016’s “Wroughtland,” and in 2015, into a brooding, candlelit chapel for a particularly well-received show titled “Purgatory.” “I’m-just-here-to-make art is that real essence of Fringe,” Montana says. “I get sad the more and more I make work and the bigger my work gets, the further I stray from that … I’m really happy to be able to be where I’m at, but at the same time I kind of miss being a nobody and just doing my thing.” See FRINGE, page 15>>

FRINGE PREVIEW

FRINGE: Annual performance arts festival kicks off Sept. 5

<<Continued from page 14 But the nobodies, as it happens, would probably sacrifice limbs to be in one of Gunnar’s shows today. FringeArts, the nonprofit brainchild of the festival, is now showcasing young artists who weren’t even born when the Fringe Festival began in 1996. The scale has grown over the years, according to FringeArts director Nick Stuccio. Uncurated productions, which range from highend stage acts to mobile one-woman performances, still make up the bulk of the festival. Two decades ago, Fringe had 60 curated and uncurated performances; this year will showcase more than 200, plus another fresh slate of online-only digital shows. Two miles away, a dozen UArts students are rehearsing in a cramped black-box theater in Gershman YMCA on South Broad Street. The title of the piece, “An Incomplete List of All the Things I’m Going to Miss When the World is No Longer,â€? has the windedness of a postrock song, and its 19-year-old creator, Dante Green, is reckoning with some similarly weighty subject matter — death, life after death, experimenting with hallucinogenic drugs — through a mix of dance, song and dialogue. In one chorus, student actors break out into a mournful harmony about hunting for signs of hope in a bleak world. There’s no course credit for Green and his peers. Like Montana’s early works, Green is financing his own project. Why? For the glory of Fringe. “To be able to be 19 and show this thing that I’ve been working on to the whole city of Philadelphia ‌ I think that’s like it,â€? Green says. “That is the soul.â€? Make no mistake: Many Fringe shows are startlingly bad. The awful factor is part of the tradition. Conventional advice varies for first-time and veteran attendees alike, but in general, one should take a gamble on (at least) three uncurated shows. One will be bad and another one will also be bad. But one will likely change the way you look at the performing arts. Today, with its $3-million-a-year

Zakiya Cornish, Patricia Peaches Jones, and Lela Aisha Jones reimagine African identity in ‘Plight Release and the Diasporic Body.’ The show: The Edge of the Rock Show type: Dance. Why you should go: If for not going to see some of the city’s best dancers across all different schools of dance primarily ballet, go to support The Rock School for Dance Education, and its outreach program that provides instructional arts and fitness classes to over

26,000 students throughout the Philadelphia School District. This show will showcase some of the brightest up-andcoming dancers in Philadelphia hailing from a school that has found scores of its alumni move on to some of the most prestigious dance troupes and companies worldwide. It’ll be a good show, but for an even better cause. We think that’s

budget and a new waterfront headquarters, Philly FringeArts still retains its fundamental democratic virtues. Artists pay to play, and no one is spurned for lack of talent. Success or failure – largely fueled by the media (and the gossip mill) over the course of the festival – rests on each show’s laurels, Stuccio says. Philly Fringe has its growing pains, but they’re not as bad as others. The eponymous festival in Edinburgh, Scotland, began in 1947 as a protest movement against the high-brow and the elite theater festivals that excluded serious works from unknown artists. In 1966, Tom Stoppard premiered his now-famous drama, “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead. Today, sophomore

comedy acts dominate the festival, so much that it’s hard to imagine a sophisticated, three-act dramatic work finding a stage. No one would care now, says Stuccio. But in Philly, there is still space – this year, at least. Philly is not the poor-artists’ paradise it once was. Funding remains an ever-graver concern amid our current political and economic climate. When Fringe began in the mid-1990s, Stuccio recalls that thespians rented Old City apartments for $200 a month, and there was cheap warehouse space within a stone’s throw in any direction. But the silver lining of the city’s real estate boom is that, each year, more Fringe shows appear in neighborhoods outside of Center City.

There are varying opinions about Fringe’s slate of curated shows — which tend to be established, crowddrawing acts that are premiering new work — but many of these same artists got their start on the festival’s ground floor. Protean director-actor Thaddeus Phillips opened Fringe in the mid-1990s with a solo rendition of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest, relayed from a plastic kiddie pool. Phillips has returned to more than a dozen festivals since then, and this year he’ll produce his latest work, “A Billion Nights on Earth, on the FringeArts main stage. Other artists come to the festival mid-career. Choreographer Lela Aisha Jones, 39, had a first Fringe experience just a few years ago, and returns this year with “Plight Release and the Diasporic Body, an Afrocentric production that was commissioned by Temple University’s dance department. “The Fringe is an open space that’s ready to go for whatever message you have, Jones says. “What your work is centered around culturally, or with gender or with class, you have permission to go into this space and do your work. Follow Max Marin on Twitter @MAXMMARIN

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

tacks of freshly made pizza pies - we are talking plain, pepperoni, mushroom and onion, tomato pie and several other varieties - were front and center on Aug. 24 as a hungry crowd of patrons arrived at Penns Landing Caterers for one of the most anticipated foodie events of the summer. The South Philly Review’s Eighth Annual Pizza Palooza presented by Liscio’s Bakery made its long-awaited return. On this night, there was no need to order a pie as an eye-opening amount of pizza slices were front and center at Penns Landing Caterers, 1301 S. Columbus Blvd. With numerous pies on full display for patrons to try, the toughest decision of the night was which one to try first. SliCE, 1180 S. 10th St.; Cacia’s Bakery, 1526 W. Ritner St.; South View Pizza, 367 Durfor St.; Key Pizza, 1846 S. 12th St.; City Pizza, Front Street and Snyder Avenue and 2700 S. 16th St.; Millie’s Burgers, Steak & Shakes, 1441 W. Shunk St.; J&J Pizza, 1177 S. 9th St.; South Bowl, 19. E. Oregon Ave., and Steak ’Em Up, 2600 S. 11th St., brought their fresh-fromthe-oven selections for all to try. Others did a little dancing as King Arthur played the golden oldies. A special thank you goes out to sponsors Liscio’s Bakery, Methodist Hospital, Metro PCS, Inspire Energy and Utz.

Friends, from left, Becky Narkin, Patty Aversa and Marie Palena grabbed a table to try some different slices.

At left, Chef Chris Rodgers of Penns Landing Catering serves a piece of stromboli to an attendee. Above, Sam Cacia and daughter, Danielle, of Cacia’s Bakery serve up their signature pies.

North Bowl employees, from left, JJ Porteus, Tim Librizzi, Javon Carl and Mariah Weiler help serve slices.

(Come)back-to-back champions Philadelphia Soul take ArenaBowl XXX crown in historic fashion By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

railing by 13 points with about five minutes left in the first half, the Soul staged the biggest comeback in ArenaBowl history. That effort started with a drive that ended with 46 seconds left in the half when Mykel Benson scored the first of his two rushing touchdowns, helping the Soul earn a 44-40 win over the Tampa Bay Storm and the third Arena Football League championship in franchise history. The Soul became the just the fourth AFL franchise to win back-to-back titles. The Soul’s defense pressed all evening, and with loud and spirited support from the announced crowd of 13,648 at their backs at the Wells Fargo Center, the home team eventually wore down the Storm, forcing mistakes that allowed the Soul to take a 10-point lead with 5:13 left in the fourth quarter, a lead they would not surrender. One fatal blow came at the 7:33 mark of the fourth quarter, with the Soul up 35-27. Soul defensive end Sean Daniels sacked Storm quarterback Randy Hippeard in the end zone for a safety, making the score 37-27. The Storm and Soul traded touchdown passes to make the score 44-34. On the Storm’s next possession, with time slipping away, Hippeard tried a quick strike down field. Soul defensive back Dwayne Hollis effectively sealed the Foster Trophy for Philadelphia by intercepting the pass with 2:40 left in the game. “Defense wins championships,” defensive back James Romain said outside the Soul’s chaotic locker room after the game. “That’s all we preached week in and week out. You win the defensive battle, you win the special teams battle, you should come up with big victories. That’s what happened tonight, back to back, we brought it home for the city of Philadelphia. It’s great.” The Soul defense set the tone on the Storm’s first possession of the game.

Putting pressure on Hippeard from the first snap, the Soul forced a fourthdown play. In the Arena Football League, there

Above, Soul quarterback Dan Raudabaugh played a big part in the team’s victory, completing 20-of-34 passes for 232 yards and four touchdowns. Once we got on the same page, the Zidian said. “We get ball started rolling, it was a snowball there, we disrupt him effect, touchdown after touchdown … any way we can and we know our DBs ‘Money’ (Darius Reynolds), SK (Shaun are going to have our backs no matter Kauleinamoku) and Dan (Raudabaugh) what. say it enough, defense wins championships and in the second half we shut them down. Sean Daniels came up with a big sack.” Several Soul players played through injuries, including Reynolds, who suffered a head injury just before the half and had to be checked out before returning; Raudabaugh, who wore a brace on his knee after sustaining what has been reported as an ACL tear in the first half; and center Brennen Carvalho, who had to be helped off the field in the third quarter in what appeared to be a leg injury. All returned and played well. Their effort was not missed by their teammates. “He’s a warrior,” Zidian said of Carvalho. “He’s definitely a warrior. Those guys are who I’m playing for, getting a ring for those guys. ‘Money’ was hurt last week, he was able to come out. Dan was playing with a knee brace after he got hurt, he’s a warrior ... they’re proud guys.” Raudabaugh was 20-of-34 for 232 yards, four touchdown passes and the interception. Reynolds caught six passes for 121 yards and a touchdown, Kauleinamoku snagged eight passes for 81 yards and a score, and ArenaBowl MVP Darius Prince caught five passes for 27 yards and two touchdowns. Prince became the first rookie since Rick Hamilton in ArenaBowl XII to capture MVP honors with the two touchdown passes to go with three tackles on special teams. Leading the Storm were Kendrick Ings with five catches for 57 yards and two touchdowns, plus a third on the missed field goal, and Joe Hills, who had five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Romain also chimed in on Carvalho, who visibly struggled through most the third and fourth quarter to stay in the game. If he couldn’t, the outcome may have been different. “‘Valho’ (Carvalho) is an oldhead to me,” Romain said with a laugh. “When I was a rookie, he was a vet. We went to the championship and we lost. To see him fight through that, how hard he did that. The way he played his heart out to See SOUL, page 22>>

EAGLES INSIDER

C

All aboard the Carson Wentz train

arson Wentz has all the pieces around him. He’s got the talent within him. He is surrounded by coaches who have played the quarterback position and who understand the highs and lows of the job and the enormous pressure that comes with overseeing the Philadelphia Eagles offense. In Year 2, Wentz is ready for The Big Jump. As the Eagles turn their attention toward the final preseason game — one that neither Wentz nor any player whom the Eagles think will step foot on the field in the regular season is likely to play — and then begin in earnest preparations for the Sept. 10 regular season opener at Washington, the stakes grow exponentially higher for Wentz, in his second season as the Eagles’ starting quarterback. In 2016, he was a feel-good story, the big kid (6foot-5, 240 pounds) from a small school (North Dakota State) who became the second pick in the draft and then was thrust suddenly into the role as a starting quarterback eight days before the season opened against the Cleveland Browns. There were super-bright moments for Wentz, like when he led the Eagles to a 3-0 record in September and was named the NFC’s Offensive Player of

Dave

Spadaro

the Month. And there were plenty of tough times, too, as Wentz threw interceptions and couldn’t hold leads and finished the year with 16 touchdown passes, 14 interceptions and a 7-9 won-loss record. For the most part, the tough-guy mentality in this city backed off on Wentz, understanding his position, admiring his maturity, recognizing his very rare natural gifts and cutting him some

slack. That won’t be the case this season. The expectations for Wentz, and for the Eagles, are sky high. That’s a good thing for a team that hasn’t won a playoff game since 2008 and hasn’t been in the postseason since 2013. The Eagles are moving in the right direction with the personnel moves they’ve made, starting with the trade up to No. 2 in the 2016 NFL Draft to get into position to take Wentz. Now the pressure is on Wentz, and it’s going to

“He is the leader of the team. That’s what a quarterback does in this league and Carson handles all of that very well.” – Eagles Head Coach Doug Pederson

be that way for the remainder of his career. “It’s the nature of the position and I’m fine with that,” Wentz said. “I embrace that pressure because I put more pressure on myself than anyone else could. I want nothing more than to win the Super Bowl for this franchise and for the fans. That’s what I’m here to do.” With the additions of wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and running back LeGarrette Blount, and with a strong offensive line and a proven offensive scheme in place, the table is set for Wentz to thrive. Now. This year. There is no more grace period.

“Everything flows with Carson. He understands the position he is in. He’s the quarterback here. He is the leader of the team. That’s what a quarterback does in this league and Carson handles all of that very well,” head coach Doug Pederson said. “He’s still growing, that’s the thing. There is always going to be room for improvement.” The Big Jump comes this year, from rookie to a winning, star quarterback. It’s the natural ascension for the Face of a Franchise, as Wentz is for the Eagles. The kid is all grown up, and one year later the weight of steering the Eagles back into the playoffs is resting comfortably on his broad shoulders.

You’ve got to dig deep inside yourself and find whatever you

can to get it done. I couldn’t be prouder of my guys.
