or securing our border, I’ve got a better idea than building a wall. My idea is less expensive, ecologically superior and more practical. Build a moat. And catch this: We wouldn’t need to fill the moat with alligators. Just fill it with Sheriff Joe Arpaio in the moat after he’s missed a few meals. Even the sheriff’s critics agree that he’s very fierce, particularly if it comes to persecuting Mexicans. I know what you’re t h i n k i n g . Wo u l d the government of Mexico pay for the moat? I think President Trump, being the “strong” negotiator that he is, could swing a deal. Issue a formal apology to Mexico for Taco Bell. The moat could also act as a dump for establishment Republicans. Think of the TV ratings when Trump dropped Mitch McConnell from Air Force One … without a parachute. I don’t want you to think that building a moat is the only solution to solving our illegal immigration problem (Wait! That isn’t a problem since illegal immigration has fallen off since Obama was president). My other alternative is a tad more expensive, but attractive in its simplicity. We could just reconquer Mexico and declare that country part of the U.S. No wall. No moat. Why? Because Mexicans crossing into America would be

he last time Jaeden Lieberher spoke with South Philly Review, he was 10 years old and had just landed his first commercial gig. The commercial aired during the Super Bowl, and he said he wanted to keep doing what he was doing. Four years later, the former resident of the 1200 block of S. Clarion Street maintains the

same sentiment, even though his acting chops have expanded far beyond commercials. Now 14, Jaeden is set to lead in one of the biggest anticipated blockbusters of the fall. He is the star of “It,” a film adaptation of Stephen King’s classic horror novel. It’s his first blockbuster-leading role, but he already has 11 television and film acting credits to cram onto his resume.

Ask him yourself, though, and he’ll say not much has changed since that initial interview. “I’ve hit puberty, that’s pretty much it,” he said with a laugh. Jaeden plays Bill Denbrough, who lives in the fictional rural town of Derry, Maine. In the film, Bill’s 6-year-old brother Georgie is claimed by Pennywise the Dancing Clown, an entity that lives in the town’s sewers and is able to take the form of any child’s greatest fear. Bill leads his friends in an investigation See IT, page 6>>

A group of 11 ladies, who started a social club in 1968 called SOS (Sigma Osa Simmerson), is having a reunion. All the invitees attended Philadelphia Public Schools together and The Lakes is where their parents took the family for fun and relaxation. Some of the

members have not been back in more than 50 years, so this weekend will offer them a chance to return to their roots. Former junior high teachers and jazz musicians, Anthony Williams (Tony Williams Quartet) and Joseph Stevenson will be in attendance. … There is a 9/11 Heroes Run taking place on Saturday (Sept. 9) at the Philadelphia Navy Yard Marine Parade Grounds on South Broad Street starting at 9 a.m. The fun run/walk is open to all ages and is an opportunity to come out and say thanks to local veterans, their families and first responders. to take down Pennywise, all the while hoping to find his little brother. They may look identical, but Jaeden and Bill have vastly different backgrounds; Jaeden city-hopped from Philadelphia to Los Angeles when he was about 8 to pursue his acting career, and Bill is used to biking everywhere in his small town home with his friends. Bill also speaks with a stutter. To approach the character, Jaeden had to find similarities. “Bill has a fear of losing his little brother, and I have a similar fear I’ll lose someone I’m close to,” he said. He was able to approach the role with that common fear in mind. “It helped me imagine what Bill is going through, so having a similar fear is how I related to him,” he said. Jaeden’s Georgie is his mother. As for the stutter, Jaeden used YouTube to research how to speak with one, but quickly found there are no prevalent speech patterns. “It was difficult to find the balance of sounding real, and making sure it was noticeable,” he said. Jaeden speaks softer than his on-screen counterpart, measuring each word with contemplative care. He’s entirely humble, and treats landing his role in “It” with the same importance of landing that Super Bowl commercial, because they were both “equally important to his future.” For someone his age, he’s already done quite a lot for his future. In 2014, he starred in “St. Vincent” alongside Bill Murray, Melissa McCarthy and Naomi Watts. For that role, Jaeden played a bullied kid who Murray’s alcoholic war veteran character takes under his wing, for better or worse. That role also was big for Jaeden’s future. He earned five award nominations for his performance, and he took home the prize in Las Vegas Film Critics Society

Awards’ Youth in Film category, and Phoenix Film Critics Society’s Best Performance by a Youth category. “It” isn’t the only movie he’s played the lead role in this year. Earlier this year, he starred alongside Watts again in “The Book of Henry,” this time as an 11-yearold genius who concocts a plan to save the girl next door from being abused by her father. Although acting keeps him busy, Jaeden looks forward to returning to the east coast to visit family who still reside in Philadelphia. “I feel weird being there, because I never want to do the touristy things because I’ve lived there most of my life,” he said with a laugh. His favorite thing to do is go to restaurants and “see what’s new.” A relative owns Johnny Brenda’s, a bar in Fishtown, one of his favorite jawns. He said he misses Philly’s weather; his west coast friends never heard of a snow day. As for the future, Jaeden’s approach is the same as it was four years ago. “I hope to keep acting in movies,” he said. “I just feel that anyone who gets to do this should be the happiest person, so I’m really, really glad it happened.” In each of the three films he’s played a lead role in, he’s played someone who deals with bullying. In the future, he’d like to take on a more sinister role, like a villain. How about taking up the role of Pennywise in a potential “It” sequel? “Maybe in 20 years,” he responded. He will next appear in “The True Adventures of WolfBoy.” Details on that question-raising title are hush-hush, but at least for now, he gets to keep doing what makes him happy. Another future goal he has is getting behind the camera and directing. It only took him a few years to achieve the goal he set at age 10. Who knows where he could be in another four years?

Don’t stray away from Mesquite

Meet 10-month-old Mesquite, a male fox terrier or Jack Russell terrier (your guess is as good as ours) who was found as a stray. He just wants a home where he can grow from a puppy to an adult while maintaining his phenomenal eyebrows. As with any puppy, he has energy and is looking for a home where he can get exercise and training. He is fun, sweet and seems to like other dogs. He is a great pup who deserves a great home. Review: The ‘It’ movie of the fall By Logan Krum SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

tephen King is known for scaring. Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the poster child/demonic entity of “It, is the stuff of nightmares. He lures kids into sewers with promises of bright red balloons and “floating (whatever that means), then chomps on their arms before they can even say “bananza. Such is the life story of Georgie Denbrough, the fictional 6-year-old whose biggest mistake was letting a paper boat sink down a sewer drain. As he peers down the grate, he (and the audience) are greeted by glowing yellow eyes and a sickening feeling in the stomach. The film’s introductory scene to Pennywise is a powerful one. But after that, it stops. Pennywise the clown just isn’t as effective after that gutwrenching opening scene (during which your digesting lunch will float, too!). It’s in no part the fault of Bill Skarsgard, the bug-eyed goblin who’s been quietly stealing the show in whatever he appears in (the “Divergent series, this summer’s “Atomic Blond). Nor is it the part of its child cast, led by South Philly native Jaeden Lieberher, who collectively give the best child cast

performance since “Stranger Things (and not just because youngster Finn Wolfhard double dips in both productions). It’s Stephen King’s fault. Despite its status as one of King’s most famous works, “It really isn’t that scary of a tale. Admittedly, I’ve never read the book, but the story’s formulaic repetition is easy to pick up on; Pennywise targets one of the seven main kids to spook with their specific fear, the kid escapes (usually by simply running away, the least creative solution), and repeat. Which isn’t to knock the story of “It at all. The book deserves its classic status, and Andy Muschietti’s 2017 adaption deserves every heap of praise it will receive. The story of It has always misconstrued itself as prominently a horror. It isn’t. It’s a coming-of-age tale with horrific elements, and at that, it’s in a class of its own. As vehicles for that sentiment, the young cast shines. Lieberher (who first started making waves for his role in 2014’s “St. Vincent) makes for a magnetic lead. His character speaks with a stutter that the actor expertly uses to convey his character’s inner fear, juxtaposed against his determined exterior as the leader of the brigade against Pennywise. Act now, get scared later. It’s a philosophy that is used

by the most memorable young main characters. Wolfhard, Sophia Lillis, Jack Dylan Grazer, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Wyatt Oleff and Chosen Jacobs round out the cast of kids as the “Loser Club, social outcasts who bond over being haunted by school bullies and evil clowns. Grazer especially puts in work as Eddie, the bespectacled hypochondriac who often serves as the group’s voice of reason. New Line Cinema produced the film, in case you forgot it was possible to have horror movies that weren’t released by Blumhouse Productions. While the latter has deservedly hacked its way to the forefront of horror, “It is a noticeable change of pace from the countless “Paranormal Activities, “Purges and “Annabelles crowding the horror scene. Approaching the film’s release, it’s on track for a potential $50 million to $60 million opening weekend. Not only would that put it on track to become the most successful Stephen King film ever, but it would break records as the largest horror movie opening of all time. There’s a current trend in the box office where mixing two genres results in creative breakthroughs. Look at the market’s See REVIEW, page 12>>

REMEMBER WHEN

O

The Eagles were NFL champions

ne of these days, the words “Philadelphia Eagles” and “Super Bowl Champions” will be used in the same sentence. When it does finally happen, millions of fans will line up along South Broad Street for what will likely be the biggest championship celebration this city has ever seen. Hey, the Chicago Cubs finally put an end to the Curse of the Goat last fall, so anything is possible. With the Eagles season opener against the Washington Redskins just days away, it’s the perfect time to look back at the 1960 season — the last time the Birds called themselves NFL Champions. It’s been so long that many of us weren’t born yet or have simply forgotten about that day-after-Christmas present when they defeated the Green Bay Packers in front of 67,325 fans at Franklin Field (the only one played on the University of Pennsylvania campus). Yes, it happened so long ago that Veterans Stadium wasn’t even built. The team included future Hall of Famers Chuck Bednarik and Norman Van Brocklin in green and white. Trailing 13-10 in the fourth quarter, full back Ted Dean scored on a 5-yard run to put the home team up for good while All-Pro kicker Bobby Walston added the extra point to make the final score 17-13. Philadelphia finished the year 10-2 under the leadership of head coach Buck Shaw. Since that crowning moment some 57 years ago, the Eagles have played in just two Super Bowls, losing both times. The 1980 team led by Dick Vermeil played in Super Bowl XV, but lost 27-10 to the Oakland Raiders. The 2004 Eagles, under head coach Andy Reid, played the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXIX, but lost 24-21. One of these days … Photos provided by the Philadelphia Eagles

<<Continued from page 1 – by definition – legal citizens. This solution has the benefit of avenging our defeat at the Alamo (we could root out any statues of Santa Ana while we’re at it). Think of how the descendants of Jim Bowie would tear up. As you undoubtedly realize by now, I’m not just a columnist, but a problem solver. Take North Korea for example. It is easy to solve the problem of North Korea. Just rename that country South Korea. In exchange, South Korea, a friendly country with a great barbeque, could be renamed North Korea. Presto! North Korea would no longer be a problem. True, low information voters (otherwise known as Trump supporters) might miss the switch, but eventually they’d find out at a Trump rally. One possible hitch: the new “South Korea” would become the problem. But don’t worry, I’ve got it covered. Trump could solve a sensitive international problem with a master stroke. Award Kim Jongun an NBA franchise. Kim would be thrilled when Trump throws LeBron James into the deal. But probably not thrilled enough to name Dennis Rodman coach of the new Pyongyang Missiles. Hire Tom McGinnis to do the play-by-play. McGinnis calls the team “the Young Uns.” The logo design could be a missile exploding on takeoff. Dear readers, Trump is a president who knows how to think outside the box. With you I mourn the loss of life in Texas last week from Hurricane Harvey. I think maybe Secretary of Energy and former Governor of Texas Rick Perry may have overdone his celebrated rain dance. But I ask you, why name a hurricane “Harvey?” Isn’t it more appropriate if we name hurricanes after serial killers. Last week’s hurricane was not innocuous like most guys named Harvey. Hurricane Ted Bundy would have been a much better name for it. I sympathize with protests directed at getting rogue cops to stop killing minorities without cause. But I found out that at least some of the protesters were kneeling while the National An-

them was being played because no singer can hit the high notes. I submit to you that Francis Scott Key was no Richard Rodgers. I’m not unpatriotic. Even the best singers turn into Rosie O’Donnell when trying to sing the Star Spangled Banner (is there a statue of Francis Scott Key that we can get rid of?). Want to get rid of the pornography business? Porn has officially become a more popular pastime for men than golf. In the public interest, I have personally conducted extensive surveys to verify porn’s popularity. Here’s my idea: Knock the porn merchants out of business by legalizing and encouraging sex in public. That way, we’d get voyeurism out of our national system and we men could return to our pursuit of drinking beer and watching sports on TV. Many southerners feel victimized ever since losing the Civil War. Feeling their pain has led me to one of my better suggestions, healing the fracture between North and South. Stop tearing down statues of southern heroes of the Confederacy. So, for the good of the country – and even though I’m a longtime supporter of the Union – I say that we Yankees should begin pretending that the Confederacy won the war. My stipulations are that slavery never return and that Republicans stop believing that widespread voter fraud by illegals was responsible for Clinton winning the popular vote in 2016. Most of us don’t care if Breitbart or Jeff Sessions declare that the South won the war so long as they don’t think the rest of us are going to accept less than equality for all. We can finally stop all the southern whining and together accept that Barack Obama was a helluva president who really was born in America. No more tearing down statues. And perhaps, more importantly, folks can respectfully name their kids Beauregard again. Finally, I have figured out how to get Trump to accept transgenders in the military. I know this is unfair, my transgender friends, but bear with me. If transgenders will agree to wear the uniform of their assigned sex, all would be solved. Throw in a clothing allowance and latrine privileges.

CARDELLA: Think outside the box

<<Continued from page 9 oversaturation of superhero films, for example. Just this year, Marvel has released two genrebenders that allow it to play with conventional superhero movie tropes. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was mixed with shades of high school dramedy, while “Logan” went for a classic western aesthetic. Both paid off critically and financially. “It” is taking the genre-blending trend and applying it to the horror market, which is arguably more populated than superheroes. Some of the best moments of the film come from its softer, character-developing moments. Among the film’s most striking images is a scene where the kids play in a lake to a hauntingly beautiful track from Benjamin Wallfisch’s score. In its quieter moments,

Muschietti knows exactly how to do more with less. The film closes with an obvious sequel tease, but for once, splitting a book into two films feels earned. Besides, the bigger payoff from the film’s closing statement is the chemistry between Lieberher and Lillis. Kudos to screenwriters Chase Palmer, Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman for choosing to end this high-concept horror on a quiet character moment, and to Muschietti for trusting these two young performers to carry it through. At its core, “It” is a story about childhood fears and memories, and how time and distance can sometimes make you forget them. This film will stick around for a while, though.

South Philly resident voted next PR group president By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

fter graduating from Cabrini University in 2006, South Philly resident Nina Scimenes decided that becoming a member of the Philadelphia Public Relations Association was a good first step on the path to utilizing her English and communication degrees and setting herself for career success. A little more than a decade later, she has been inducted as president-elect of the organization. Set to assume the presidency for the 2018-2019 program year, Scimenes, 33, of 4th and Wharton streets, was voted into this new role by the organization’s nominee committee at an annual meeting this past June. She believes her nomination stems from her volunteerism with the PPRA over the past several years, ranging from planning luncheons to organizing other external affairs. “It’s an honor to be recognized [as the next president],” Scimenes, who works as a communications and marketing manager of Brûlée Catering by Chef Jean-Marie Lacroix, 14016 S. Front St., said. “I hope to continue adding value to [the organization’s] membership. There will always be a PPRA, and we will continue its legacy.” In expressing how proud she is to now be a leader within the PPRA organization, Scimenes

‘I hope to continue adding value to membership. There will always be a PPRA, and we will continue its legacy.’ – NINA SCIMENES, Philadelphia Public Relations Association president explained she has learned so much from other past and present members, and looks forward to passing along this knowledge and leadership skills to others. Thus, she hopes to continue a push toward increased college relations in hopes to get more younger members involved.

“As president, I will be overseeing all of the committees and board of governors to ensure that we meet our mission and serve all public relations professions,” she said. “I look forward to being able to recognize other individuals who have been able to work hard and excel.”

Additionally, in the coming year, Scimenes hopes to focus her efforts on giving back to the community, as it is a “huge part of what [PPRA does.]” She also plans to find new ways to add value to the membership to “really make it something that people desire and want to be a part of.” Scimenes already has planned a Networking 101 event set to take place at Independence Live, 1919 Market St., on Sept. 25 at 5:45 p.m. as part of her responsibilities of overseeing the College Relations committee. She encourages those interested in their community, networking and public relations to get involved and volunteer. “This event will allow for networking and will explain the importance of using resources to college students as well as to mid and entry-level professionals,” Scimenes said. EAGLES KICKOFF

Fans have great expectations for a Carson Wentz leap

P

ip is the lead character in perhaps Charles Dickens’ most famous novel, “Great Expectations.” It tells the story of an orphan and his growth and personal development. Dickens was torn about how to complete the novel so he wrote more than one ending. Carson Wentz is the lead character in the latest chapter of Eagles football, an organization that has gone 57 years without winning a championship. While Wentz is far from an orphan, he was drafted No. 2 overall from a tiny school in North Dakota that most people in Philadelphia had never seen play a down of football. Like Pip, Wentz’ 2017 season is about growth and personal development. So how great should the expectations be for the kid from Fargo? Great growth and development should also mean great expectations. The cynical Eagle fan might surmise that it is best to expect nothing and then they won’t be disappointed. This Wentz kid is different than most and more special than most. This year you will be more pleasantly surprised than fatally disappointed. Every time I speak with an Eagle executive who is responsible for evaluating talent and building this roster the conversation ALWAYS comes back to Wentz. Actually they never say Wentz by name. They simply say that “we have 11.” In other words, in Wentz they trust. When pressed to say more about Wentz, they simply say that it’s everything. The work that he puts in. Quality work. It’s the time, as long a day as any employee puts in. The interaction with all teammates and the sincerity of those interactions. He is a complete self-starter and never needs to be told where to be or what

Fans should expect to see a jump in play and production from Carson Wentz this season.

O N T H E E AGLE S else needs to get done. He already knows that. The insatiable appetite to get better and to be great is a knowing purpose that can’t be qualified. When it comes to expectations he simply wants to be GREAT, and no price is too high to accomplish that. When Doug Pedersen and the coaches who accompanied him to his private workout at the Fargodome prior to him being drafted back in March of 2016, he was already out on the curb with a bag of balls and some spikes to workout waiting on the Eagles to work him out. Before the sun came up he was mentally ready to blow the doors off the Eagles coaches and scouts. When I spent time this spring with Eagle safety Malcolm Jenkins, who has one Super Bowl ring with Drew Brees in New Orleans, he told me that he has

every single trait that Drew Brees possesses. He said he can be Drew Brees. And that’s from a perspective of a star defensive player who has lined up opposite Drew Brees and Carson Wentz in practice every day and sees the special qualities that only a few of the QBs possess in any decade. The Eagles front office sees these qualities. Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, and the rookie additions of Donnel Pumphrey and Mack Hollins and Shelton Gibson are a pretty good haul considering the dismal salary cap situation they found themselves in at the end of the 2016 season. There are a couple of immediate areas where we can follow Carson on the road to great expectations for both him and the team. He must become more accurate with throws 10 yards or more. Some of that will happen automatically as he is now surrounded with better players than the group he played with during his rookie campaign. The incessant drops should

be fewer and the routes and who he trusts to run those routes should be far superior to any game he played in a year ago. He has yet to secure a fourth-quarter comeback. Never underestimate this statistic for quarterbacks. While it is the ultimate team game, it still falls on the QB’s shoulders to find ways to win games in crunch time. Think back to week four last year in Detroit where they surrendered a fourth quarter lead because of a fumble by Ryan Mathews. But Carson still had a chance before an interception by Darius Slay Jr. foiled that attempt. Then there were back-to-back heart breaking defeats to the Giants and Cowboys in the middle of the season. Against Dallas they were up 10 points in the fourth quarter on the road in front of a national TV audience that slipped away. Later in the season they had a great chance to upend the Ravens on the road and could not make plays at the end to

pull out a mild upset. Those were four possible wins that could have made a good debut a great debut. When he pulls out his first fourth quarter comeback this year a graphic will immediately appear on a lower third of the man cave TV set you are watching on that will inform you. While you are informed, Carson will be relieved and that 100 watt incandescent smile of his will be a beacon of joy on the Eagle sideline. If the Eagles can enter the toughest stretch of their schedule 8-5 before they face the Giants and then on Christmas night they face the Raiders followed by the Cowboys only six days later, I think it could be the most exciting Eagle season in a long long time. With an 8-5 record going into that stretch it would ensure at least an 8-8 season and the possibility of an 11-5 season. But they can’t get to 8-5 without great play from Carson. Whether it’s looking at NFL stats and seeing Wentz among the leaderboards or listening to the new analytic kids who are breaking down every throw into some newfangled measurement, he will have to be an improved player at that point. The highest expectations are reserved for those players who are true franchise players. Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, who make everyone in their organization better. They make them better by making five throws in almost every game that no one else can make. They make everyone better by converting on the toughest thirdand fourth-down plays that no one else makes and keeps a weary defense off the field. They manage games differently week to week to help cover up the weaknesses. They exude leadership via their actions especially when a team is in the toughest predic aments. This is a special club that awaits Carson. If Dickens were to write the script for the Eagles 2017 season I hope that his title, “Great Expectations,” were met by even the most cynical of fans. And I would hope that Dickens would only need to write one ending that leaves all Eagle fans with hope; the type of hope that leaves all fans of all ages believing that the Birds can end this 56-year old drought without a championship. Wentz, like Pip, is a season of growth and personal development.

EAGLES KICKOFF

Eagles still building chemistry with running game By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he guts of a football team’s offensive production, at any level, is measured on how the coaches mesh the offensive line with its running game. The chemistry and execution of those two units often determine the success of the season. The Eagles have a veteran offensive line that played together last year with the exception of right tackle Lane Johnson who sat out 10 games because of a PED suspension. This year, though, the Birds are basically putting together a new running corps. Darren Sproles is the only running back returning with significant playing time and carries over the last few years. Wendell Smallwood, now in his second year out of West Virginia, played in 13 games last year and accounted for 312 yards and one touchdown. Byron Marshall was signed in mid-December off the Eagles practice squad to the active roster and played in just three games. Veteran LeGarrette Blount – signed as a free agent this offseason – plus rookies Donnel Pumphrey and Corey Clement are new to the team. Halapoulivaati Vaitai, in his second year out of TCU, said the offensive line unit was making progress. “It’s improving, we just need to keep working on communicating,” Vaitai said at his locker after a training camp practice. “There’s always room for improvement. We’ve got everything down, we just need to execute it right and communicate.” Vaitai was asked about the Eagles making very few changes on the O-line this year. Was that a sign they are happy with who they have in camp? “I think so,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of talent in the offensive line. There is a lot of competition with the offensive linemen too. It’s a good thing.” Vaitai said he liked the group of running backs and how they are getting to know each other and the system. “They’re good guys, they are getting it,” Vaitai said. “They’re trying to understand our offense.” Vaitai said the running backs need to learn how their blockers operate, especially their footwork.

ANDY LEWIS/contrastphotography.com

The Eagles rushed for 152 yards in the third preseason game against Miami. LeGarrette Blount, number 29, had four carries for 19 yards. Giants head coach Ben McAdoo recently said his young group of running backs had to “learn the heels of their offensive linemen.” Vaitai said he understood what McAdoo meant by that. “They have to learn which guy we’re sliding to,” Vaitai said. “And which guy we’ve got and they have focus in for a second on each play and look where the gaps are forming.” Left guard Brandon Brooks was asked the same question about running backs learning the heels of their lineman. “It’s more or less … each running back has their own running style and how they read different things,” Brooks said. “They just need to get into the groove of things and understand how we block up front, the things that we do and how it affects their reads and what they need to be seeing their keys and stuff. We have certain footwork, certain angles we need to be on, things like

that.” Brooks said Blount will obviously catch on faster than the rookies and second-year players. With all this talk about running backs and offensive linemen getting to learn each others’ steps, the Birds opened the preseason against the Green Bay Packers and ran the ball just 19 times for a measly 47 yards and no touchdowns on the ground. Head coach Doug Pederson called 54 pass plays — in a preseason game. NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger looked at the Eagles-Packers preseason game and said these games are for getting your blocking techniques down and to practice tough game situations. “They should look at these games honestly,” Baldinger said. “And just use these games for every situation. They should go for it on fourth down. They should go for it on fourth and one from the goal line. They should try every possible situation you are

going to be in at crunch time during the regular season. You should be getting into as much situational football as you can. “That includes if you want to try a fake punt or whatever … also can the center snap it to the up back? They should try these things right now.” Baldinger said there are plays you only practice during preseason games. “The one area you can’t work on in practice is the inside run game,” he said. “You’re just not going to beat guys up and you don’t want to tackle. You should be working on all those inside combo blocks, doo-dad blocks and getting to the second level. You should be running these plays regardless of the result.” The Eagles ran the ball much better against a bad Miami team but must get better, especially their rookies. Pumphrey said he needs to learn more about his line and fundamentals. The Eagles gave him 11 touches against Green

Bay and the rookie produced just 17 total yards. It wasn’t poor blocking on every play for sure. After four preseason games, Pumphrey has 20 carries for 49 yards, no touchdowns. The team has averaged just 3.12 yards per carry. It has to improve. “I’m definitely happy with the touches,” Pumphrey said. “I felt like I could have done a lot more with those touches. They are giving me the opportunities to showcase myself, I just have to do better in space and make plays. I was disappointed.” Pumphrey has also fumbled twice, the team nine times, losing four. “You can’t do that at this level,” Pumphrey said. “Turnovers are a big part of the game. Whatever team turns the ball over usually ends up on the bottom. Football at this level is a business, and if I continue to fumble, I’ll no longer be here.” Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @thompsoniii

Eagles need to start strong on the road

I

f there were ever the perfect place to exorcise some demons for the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles, FedEx Field is a good place to start. The Eagles haven’t won there since 2013, in large part because Washington linebacker Ryan Kerrigan has been the most dominant Eagle-slayer since the days of Lawrence Taylor when he was with the New York Giants. Mission A for the Eagles offense, with all of this fancy firepower – wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and running back LeGarrette Blount – added in the offseason, is to slow Kerrigan, who has recorded 14 tackles and four quarterback sacks in three straight Washington wins over the Eagles in Landover, Maryland. To open the season with a victory against the NFC East-rival Redskins, the Eagles have to get the offense in gear right away. They have to establish the running game with Blount and Wendell Smallwood, and then work some play-action passing off of the ground attack. Washington’s front seven is its strength defensively, and the premier piece in all of that is Kerrigan, a seventh-year player who has 58.5 career quarterback sacks and two Pro Bowls to his name.

E AGLE S I N S I D E R “He’s a great player, no question about that, Eagles right tackle Lane Johnson said. “He makes you work. He has a lot of moves, gets off the line of scrimmage well and he just keeps coming. I’ve had my hands full with him. He’s a real challenge. Kerrigan is more than that. He’s the single player who disrupts the Eagles like no other, and he’s a primary reason — along with the play from quarterback Kirk Cousins, who has completed 64 percent of his passes for 12 touchdowns, three interceptions and 1,579 yards in five career games against the Eagles — that Washington has won five straight games against the Eagles, including three consecutive victories at FedEx Field. For the Eagles to become a playoff team in

Dave

Spadaro

2017, they’ve got to win on the road, something they did only one time (against seven losses) last season. Two difficult venues await — at Washington and then at Kansas City and Arrowhead Stadium. The vaunted Eagles offensive line, with Johnson at right tackle, Brandon Brooks at right guard, Jason Kelce at center, Isaac Seumalo at left guard and Jason Peters at left tackle, must play up to the expectations. And it starts with Washington. And Kerrigan. “He can change games, Brooks said of Kerrigan, who ended the Eagles’ postseason chances in 2014 in a late-season game when he forced quarterback Mark Sanchez into a hurried throw that was intercepted, leading to Washington’s final three points of the game. “He can turn speed into power off the edge and he can beat you inside. He’s a veteran guy who knows how to play. He works hard. You can never let down against him. You have to account for Ryan Kerrigan on every play.

That’s your key matchup to watch on Sunday (1 p.m., Fox) as the Eagles open the regular season amid high hopes. They added in free agency to boost the offense at wide receiver and running back. Defensive tackle Tim Jernigan and cornerback Ronald Darby were acquired in trades to lift the defense. Defensive end Derek Barnett was the team’s first-round draft choice expected to make an immediate impact. Ready or not, here come the Eagles. Is a playoff season ahead? The answer is yes, only if the Eagles learn to win on the road. Sunday’s game offers a perfect litmus test to see just how far the Eagles have come in a year’s time.

Sara’s No-Bake Granola Bars For those of you who hate baking, this week’s recipe has likely caught your attention, that is if you like granola. South Philly resident Sara Sierschula said they are easy to make, adding to the try-it appeal. Instead of trying to figure out breakfast or lunch first thing in the morning, Sara’s No Bake Granola Bars can be prepared the night before. When you wake up the next day, all you’ll have to do is grab a knife and slice a piece. Not such a nutty idea for a nut-filled recipe! INGREDIENTS: 1 cup of instant oatmeal (do not cook) 1 cup of crispy rice cereal 1/2 cup of dried fruit of choice, such as raisins, cranberries or dried cherries 1/2 cup of chopped nuts of choice, such as peanuts, walnuts or almonds 1/2 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup of honey or maple syrup

DIRECTIONS: Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl, then heat the peanut butter and honey in a pan on the stove top for about three minutes, stirring until smooth. Pour it over the dry ingredients, and stir until well blended. 3DFN WKH PL[WXUH GRZQ ´UPO\ ZLWK D UXEEHU VSDWXOD RU VSRRQ LQWR DQ E\ RU E\ LQFK SDQ Let it set in the fridge for at leastComment 30 minutesat before cutting into bars. southphillyreview.com/food-and-

Johnson sparks war of words with Redskins By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

f Eagles standout offensive tackle Lane Johnson wrote a bombastic column for the players blog website theplayerstribune.com to divert people away from talking about his 10-game suspension last year for violating the NFL’s policy on performance enhancing drugs, it backfired. If he wrote it to stir the pot and get Eagles fans and his teammates inspired to travel to Washington and leave the nation’s capital with a win over the Redskins in the season opener Sept. 10, then it was a brilliant move. We will know if it worked Sunday night. On Aug. 23, the popular player-only site published a column by Johnson where he talks about how tough fans can be in Philadelphia and that he found it “refreshing.” He talked about his mistakes and how he wanted to make good on missing a total of 14 games over four seasons due to suspension for testing positive for PEDs. In his quest to relate that enthusiasm to Eagles Nation, he may have started a firestorm that will no doubt intensify as the opener approaches. In the column Johnson writes: “Let me tell you what’s going to happen in a couple of weeks: This team is going to go down to D.C. and whup some a___ against the Redskins. We’re going to surprise some people.” Johnson wasn’t done. The 6-foot-6, 317 pounder went on to say the Washington game is just the start. “That’s where the momentum is going to begin,” he said, “And then the hype train is just going to get bigger as the league realizes that the Eagles are back. The NFC East is the toughest division in all of football and it’s going to get even tougher this season because nobody is going to want to face us. I’m not saying this just to blow smoke, I’m telling you guys this is how it’s going to go down.” Well it didn’t take long for those words to find their way into the Redskins locker room. Washing-

ANDY LEWIS/contrastphotography.com

Lane Johnson’s bombastic column predicting the Eagles were going to “Whup some a__” in Washington on Sept. 10, has generated strong locker-room material. ton linebacker Zach Brown, who joined the Redskins this offseason, took to Twitter to let Johnson know what he thought about his prediction. “They are some new boys in town and we don’t need PEDs to win...but just for u, 53 will be seeing you.” Brown, who obviously wears No. 53, did delete the Tweet, but explained himself to a local reporter, The Washington Post’s Scott Allen. “Just to hear somebody say that about our organization is insulting,” Brown said. “So for me, I was like, man, let me just say something back to him real quick to let him know this is a new atmosphere, a new team, a new drive. Everybody here is playing to the last second no matter what it is. We have one goal in mind — to win every game.” Brown is a sixth-year linebacker who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in 2012. After the Birds defeated the Miami Dolphins 38-31 at the Linc, Johnson was asked if he’d seen Brown’s quotes. “Not really, but it’s all in good fun,” Johnson said. “I’m a competitive person. We’re gonna go

there to play and I hope they are ready for us to come down there. It’s gonna be a good game.” As more follow up questions were asked, Johnson seemed to double down on his prediction for the opener at FedEX Field. “Yeah, I mean that’s the mentality here,” Johnson said. “Who wants to be soft with a division opponent? Has that ever been that mentality here? No. Nobody likes the Cowboys, nobody likes the Redskins, nobody likes the Giants, so I really don’t give a damn (what their fans or Brown says).” Johnson went on to say he hopes the war on words helps the Eagles break a five-game losing streak to Washington. “If a few words can get this team riled up, it’s not hurting anybody,” Johnson said. “All it is is words so … take it out on me, I don’t care. If it makes other people play better, hey I’m down for it.” Johnson was asked about if he plays badly, people will say it was because he was shooting off his mouth. Again, the left tackle was unfazed. “That’s fine,” Johnson said. “As long as we

come out with a win, I’m fine,” Johnson was asked if he was bucking the tradition of players always being politically correct, toting a party line. “I try to be as honest as possible,” Johnson said, “You know how it is in this world, negativity sells. That’s what gets you clicks, that’s what gets people interested in stuff, so that’s how the game goes.” At the end of his column, Johnson called on Eagles Nation to stand up … and do their thing. “So Philly, here’s what we’re gonna need from you: Fly with us and just be you. Come out to the games, drink some beers and raise some hell. Make this a place where our team loves to play and everybody else hates – especially Cowboys fans. “We’ll take care of the rest. “Man, is it Sept. 10 yet?” Johnson is doing his part to make sure everyone is paying attention.
