+HOG DFFRXQWDEOH ll of us claim that we want people to be more accountable for their actions. Columnists like me want to claim the high ground. I guess that’s why Uncle Nunzi Tom Cardella challenged me to take my Sept. 8, 2015 column, “Crazy Baby Crazy, and stand accountable for my written comments at the time. It seemed like a reasonable request. Plus, I figured it would be interesting to see what news items I felt were important last year at this time. Philadelphia was preparing for the Pope’s visit back then. Folks such as then-mayor Michael Nutter and Archbishop Charles Chaput were upset at the thought that some of us were complaining over what we felt were the over-the-

uring her captivating career as a determined dancer, Carolyn Marcinkiewicz has often needed to nurse her bloody feet, such has been the devotion that she has applied to the vocation. While tending to those extremities has become a customary practice, the 34-yearold finds herself having to heal another cherished body part, her heart, having lost brother Danny to addiction four months ago. She will call on her calling to be a balm beginning tomorrow when she and fellow South Philadelphians Leslie Davidson and Jessica Noel present “our poison at Philly Pack, 729 S. Fourth St. “It’s going to be cathartic in some ways, the Queen Village occupant said of the 30-minute show, one of 17 South Philly-based creations that will help the FringeArts Festival to

mark its 20th celebration. “I might cry while performing because it’s still often incredibly emotional when facing it all. She and her peers will address addiction through their dance theater project, with Marcinkiewicz noting their movements will work to reflect the effects that the malady’s many forms have on relationships. For one element, she will initiate the action by placing herself in the same spot where she was when learning that her sibling was missing. Along with the intensely emotional qualities of the premiere, which will run on Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 24, Marcinkiewicz expects for her involvement to strengthen the commitment to dance that has helped her to become a commended professional. “Of course with my brother’s death, it’s been a wild ride to go through the grieving process with my art form as a means to comprehend the setback, she said. “When I look beyond that component and focus on the opportunity that we have to be a bit of a comfort provider to people and the chance that I have to represent Philly PACK and work with two amazing women, I feel really fortunate.

Editor’s note: Ready for Kickoff The Philadelphia Eagles are back! I am happy to report that the DeMarco Murray search party has been called off. He has resurfaced in Tennessee, so we can stop asking those “what if questions. Actually, we could probably go on and on mentioning all of the names former head coach Chip Kelly (what was his other title again) brought through town last season. As it turns out, like Pope Francis and Hillary Clinton, they were just visiting. How is San Francisco, Chip? It seems the team is getting more attention as to whether or not quarterback Colin Kaepernick is standing for the national anthem than their performance on the field.
;OWZ S [OWZ Speaking of performances on the field, forget about the fact that the Philadelphia Eagles went 4-0 during the preseason. Sunday against the Cleveland Browns (1 p.m. ) kickoff is when the real conversation begins. Doug Pederson, who is an Andy Reid disciple and former Eagles quarterback (remember before Donovan McNabb took over), is calling the shots from the sideline. Reid is a well-respected coach around the league, but he has never been able to win the big game. Here’s hoping the pupil outperforms the teacher. Football fans around South Philly are still waiting for that first Super Bowl championship parade to come down South Broad Street. Overall, Philadelphia is not viewed as a championship town (kudos to the Philadelphia Soul on their recent ArenaBowl championship), but the remaining hairs on the top of my head will turn gray while waiting for this monumental occasion to occur. I really

believe this town is cursed, as the Phillies 2008 World Series win is faded into the distant memory category like one of Taylor Swift’s ex-boyfriends. It’s certainly not going to be this year – more on that later. The team’s last crowning moment came in 1960 when it was known as the NFL Championship. It also happens to be the last time the NFL Draft came through town. This week’s issue of the South Philly Review is jam packed with football coverage, from the cover story by Joseph Myers on the NFL announcing that the NFL Draft will be taking place on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway next spring (was anybody surprised by this news?) to local fan reaction on the very unexpected Sam Bradford trade. We also have a special contribution from former Phila-
Iekj^ F^_bbo H[l_[m delphia Eagle and current NFL analyst Brian Baldinger sharing his thoughts on defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. Al Thompson, the editor-in-chief of our sister publication FootballStories, is sharing a piece on the Eagles defense. The special section also includes a center spread featuring the schedule and roster. Come Sunday, it will be time for all of the talking to end. This Carson Wentz era will officially gets under way, and I expect there to be a lot of growing pains along the way. I am predicting the Eagles will open the season with a win (24-10), but will finish the year 7-9 overall. Of course, we should not forget that this Sunday is the anniversary of 9/11. While sitting back and enjoying the games, take a moment to remember our fellow American who were lost on that horrible day in

even or eight juvenile black males surrounded a Pizza Pub delivery person as he tried to complete a job on the 2700 block of Tree Terrace at 10:55 p.m. Aug. 28, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. One offender opened the passenger door and took the food, valued at $58, before they all fled the area, with the victim last seeing them heading westbound inside the Wilson Park projects at 25th and Jackson streets. He described them as all being 13 to 14 years old and wearing white T-shirts and blue jeans. At 1:40 a.m. the next day, a driver for Three Countries Pizza also ventured to the 2700 block of Tree Terrace and soon encountered three unknown black males as he approached the designated residence, Tolliver said. All three used T-shirts to cover their faces, and the lead aggressor put a silver gun to his side, with the accomplices taking the provisions and cash from his pocket before rushing off to the 2700 block of Snyder Avenue. The employee described all of the offenders as 18 years old and 5-foot-7; and having a thin build. The first two were shirtless and wore black T-shirts around their face, while the third wore a white T-shirt and placed a black one around his face. An at-large individual used a knife to pull off a robbery in Dickinson Square West. An employee at T&R Mini Market, 1526 S. Fourth St., was working at approximately 10:30 p.m. Aug. 30 when an unknown male came to the counter and demanded money, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. He quickly moved to the side of the counter and produced a knife to intimidate her. Grabbing a handful of cash, she gave it to the aggressor, who ran northbound on Fifth Street. She described him as white, approximately 25 years old, 5-foot-7, and approximately 190 pounds; and having short brown hair and a slight beard. 10) The decision to promote Rich Kotite to coach: Then-offensive coordinator Rich Kotite became the franchise’s 18th coach on Jan. 8, succeeding the polarizing Buddy Ryan. Given that he was inheriting an offensively gifted team, I believed Randall Cunningham et al would shred opponents. Then came Sept. 1. 9) The loss of Cunningham to a knee injury in Week 1: Linebacker Bryce Paup will live on for many achievements, including his winning the 1995 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, but here in Philly, he is known as the (insert your favorite expletive) whose first-quarter tackle resulted in a knee injury for Cunningham, the reigning most valuable player. Had the Green Bay Packer not inflicted that hit, how explosive might the offense have been that year? Sigh. 8) The hiring of Bud Carson as defensive coordinator: Most fans rightfully geek out on their favorite players’ statistical output, but I have always been a fan of the coaches and coordinators who help them to put up such great numbers. Already highly regarded for his Super Bowl-winning methods while with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Bud Carson came to town having escaped Cleveland, or Football Hell, as I know it. His initial unit was scary, finishing first overall and topping the ranks against the rush and the pass. We will never see such dedication to hard-nosed tackling in
this town again. 7) The tenacity with which they played defense: This group of defenders really let me down only one time (See item number 3.). With Reggie White, Jerome Brown, and Clyde Simmons harassing people up front, Byron Evans and Seth Joyner heading the linebacker crew, and Eric Allen leading the secondary, I pitied opponents who felt they would put up career days against this nest of pests. 6) The Week 6 loss to Tampa Bay: Tampa Bay used to be Football Purgatory to me, and when the Eagles traveled there Oct. 6, I expected them to avoid damnation and slaughter the Buccaneers. This was an interesting day, as I also watched the Flyers and the Penguins play to a 2-2 tie and the Mets’ David Cone strike out 19 Phillies. None of our teams would emerge victorious that day, as the wretched Sunshine State athletes claimed a 14-13 win. 5) The commendable job by Jim McMahon: The Wikipedia article on the ’91 season says when Cunningham went down, the Eagles needed to rely on “an over-the-hill Jim McMahon. The guy was 32 years old! I think he performed well, especially when keying a six-game winning streak through a Week 10 throttling of the New York Giants. He was an exciting piece of a complex puzzle, and I thank him for being a solid fit. 4) The Week 10 win over the Giants: Being a typical Philly fan, I hate all teams with “New York before their nickname. The fact that the Giants play in New Jersey makes me dislike them even more! On Nov. 4, the Birds romped to a 30-7 win over the defending Super Bowl champions, drawing many smiles from this then-12-year-old. 3) The Week 11 win over Cleveland: Losing to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Indians is no cause for shame, but falling to the Browns should be enough to make a team consider folding. On Nov. 10, the Eagles nearly earned my ire by going down 23-0 in a road tilt. Storming back to win 32-30, they made me feel that something special was going to occur as the season aged. 2) The Week 14 win over Houston: Despite their defensive prowess, I heard a few experts say the mighty Oilers, with Warren Moon chucking the pigskin, would put up 50 on the Eagles. Subtract 44 from that, you sages. The Birds allowed only 247 total yards and forced five turnovers, completely knocking Moon and his mates out of their orbit at the Astrodome. 1) The Week 17 win over Washington: This 24-22 triumph over the Redskins, who went on to win the Super Bowl, immediately mattered to me because it gave the Eagles four straight years with at least 10 victories and again marked a great effort against an offensive juggernaut. It took on greater significance June 25, ’92 when Brown died in a Florida car accident. I cried over his passing and still engage in “What if scenarios regarding the rest of the decade. Such is life. Such is football. SPR

began to follow the Eagles in 1989 and immediately fell for the club because of immense heart that the players showed. They tallied an 11-5 mark that season and a 10-6 mark the next campaign, earning a playoff berth each time. When ’91 rolled around, I was certain that not only would they win a postseason contest but three, the number of victories for a division champion to claim the Super Bowl. Though the Birds failed to qualify for the playoffs, I still consider that team my favorite. Being that this marks 25 years since that starcrossed gridiron march, I pondered my top 10 favorite memories surrounding the squad and present them before you.

tion. I was right that nobody cared. On the other hand, anyone asking directions to Mount Denali is likely to be told--Never heard of it... Surprise! Surprise! Hillary’s e-mails were in the news at this time last year. Her e-mails were about to be released (a continuing process likely to last through the two terms of her presidency if she gets there). I ridiculed the idea that these e-mails would contain anything more newsworthy than an opinion about Jenna Bush’s wedding gown. The e-mails have been and continue to be newsworthy, but only because the public rates Hillary’s trustworthiness lower than that of a used car salesperson. Fortunately for her, the public’s trust in Trump falls somewhere between that of its estimation of sushi sold at a 7-Eleven and the toilet seat at a roadside rest stop... I expressed awe at President Obama’s support for the Keystone Pipeline during a trip where his goal was to alert the public to the dangers of climate change. The Keystone Pipeline never made it. Climate change has been mentioned as an issue in the current presidential campaign Beingless than the number of times Hillary needs to make a pit stop... The anti-gay Kentucky clerk’s refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples came in for one of my snarky remarks. She has faded from the news, but the issue hasn’t. Some folks still confuse freedom of religion with discrimination. Luckily, there are still federal courts that know the difference... Despite my suggestion (my suggestions are often ignored by the people who matter), the NFL didn’t stop Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson from making ludicrous claims about his brand of water called Recovery. Wilson claims that his water can treat concussions. If you think so, you likely have a permanent concussion. One can still buy Recovery Water online. Maybe the Food and Drug Administration will get around to testing the stuff or maybe the Eagles Lane Johnson has already bought a case or two while serving his expected suspension... I mentioned in last year’s Sept. 8 column that Dr. Ben Carson’s approval rating was the biggest threat to a Trump nomination. I was wrong. Dr. Ben’s success proved as lasting as my virility. A>@ (Tom Cardella can be heard with Paul Jolovitz interviewing an Eagles guest from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 12 through wbcb1490.com)

top security measures being imposed on us. Our criticism was being viewed, not only by Nutter and Chaput, but by other movers and shakers in the city as petty and even anti-Pope. That 2015 column was concerned that the city planned to shut down a bridge, rerouting or limiting public transportation, and also the likely strain on the emergency rooms of our local hospitals. It turned out that the city’s estimates of the number of visitors to our area were way too optimistic. And so our concerns turned out to be unfounded. The Pope wowed us. City restaurant owners were not so wowed. And I was soon able to go back to worrying about the football insanity of thenEagles head coach Chip Kelly... Hard to believe that Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was considered a leading presidential contender last September. If you think Donald Trump is nutso about building a wall, Walker was even crazier back then. He wanted to build barriers to protect our 4,000-mile Canadian border. My worry was that such an action could raise the price of maple syrup. Walker’s campaign collapsed much like my butt cheeks around the age of 20. No one has mentioned Canada as a campaign issue since. And I still have my maple syrup... I voiced concern last September about our state’s budget impasse. Gee, we had a budget impasse back then? My suggestion was for Gov. Tom Wolf to accept privatization of Pennsylvania’s liquor stores and a reformed pension plan for all future state employees that would center around a 401(k). I thought such concessions by Wolf would place pressure on the Neanderthal Harrisburg Republicans to help finance our schools by impose a tax on fracking. The good news is that the governor did accept a plan to allow a limited number of stores to sell wine. The bad news is that unlike other states, we still don’t have a tax on extracting gas. As far as reforming the pension system for state employees, that’s gotten as far as the effort to tax fracking. In other words, in this state, we’re still fracked... Here’s an item I wrote about that most of us probably don’t even remember a year later. President Barack Obama renamed Mount McKinley “Denali. Trump claimed that he would go back to calling the mountain “McKinley (his first day in office?). I pooh-poohed the whole situa-

NFL DRAFT one due to the Democratic National Convention at the Wells Fargo Center. With no equally notable event planned for next spring, the franchise put in a bid and will relish its role as the city hosts its 12th draft, including the inaugural gathering in 1936, and the first since ’60 when it took place at the Warwick Hotel in Center City. “On a football field, you might hear about how the players need to work in harmony to make things work,” former Eagles quarterback Ron Jaworski said. “Well, I’m here to commend the harmony that everyone involved in this created to make this possible. The NFL Draft is back in Philadelphia!” Jaworski, who played for the Birds from ’77 to ’86, will co-chair the host committee, along with LLR Partners partner and civic leader Ira Lubert, for the outdoor extravaganza, which the Destination Marketing Association International Impact Formula projects will net more than $86.4 million in total economic gains, with $2.9 million in city and $3.9 million in state taxes also parts of the equation. The Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau expects more than 200,000 fans to participate in the celebration, for which the Eagles have a one-year deal with an option for a second, and for half of them to be out-oftowners. Such stats and the opportunity for another chance at selling the city’s charm charmed Mayor Jim Kenney as he spoke of having green blood in his veins. “On behalf of the City and our legion of Philadelphia Eagles fans, we’re proud to be chosen as host city for the 2017 NFL Draft,” the South Philly product said to enormous cheers. “We are excited to showcase Philadelphia and our passion for football and fully expect an awesome experience for all those attending and for those watching at home. I’m thankful for the incredible team at the NFL and the Philadelphia CVB for making this happen.”

THOUGH CENTER CITY will reap the visual benefits through extensive television coverage and foot traffic, South Philadelphia and its residents and proprietors will certainly see a boost in their emotional and economic identities. “It seems as if we’re unstoppable,” Mark Halter said Sunday upon exiting the Broad Street Subway at Oregon Avenue following his attendance at the Budweiser Made in America Festival, which also happened on the Parkway, home of the Barnes Foundation, the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, the Franklin Institute, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Rodin Museum. “We had the NHL [Entry] Draft two years ago, then the Pope, then the DNC, and now this. It’s all pretty amazing.” The resident of the 1100 block of Daly Street has found himself devoted to the Eagles since he moved here from Pittsburgh six years ago. Now that the team will once again have a first-round pick, thanks to Saturday’s trade of quarterback Sam Bradford to the Minnesota Vikings,
Halter looks forward to scoring an outdoor theater ticket through an early spring lottery, with good fortune meaning he will be able to view the selections as they make their way to the stage. The festivities will find the incoming prospects walking the red carpet during the first round and will call on 32 members of the NFL Legends Community, one for each team, to announce teams’ choices on the second night. April 28 will also feature the winners of the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. As with all major events, one tends to think of job creation, a point not lost on Salvatore Recchini. “I read somewhere that there are going to be at least 26,000 jobs through the whole thing,” the 400-block-of-FitzwaterStreet resident correctly noted of the positions that the construction, hospitality, and transportation sectors will support. “I know there are those people who will want to see this event as a great way to help these kids to enjoy themselves as they prepare to become millionaires, but

I care about what it’s going to do for local folks. I’m happy then that the job totals are going to be high.” The dollar amounts associated with pulling off the overall endeavor will be considerable, too. Organizers relayed that the Thursday-through-Saturday pageantry could cost $25 million, with the City accountable for $5 million and the league set to tend to staging and similar costs. The Philadelphia Industrial Development Corp. has committed $500,000 through a grant, and the local government has committed the same total through tax dollars. For those with a fixation on numbers, more than 39,000 hotel room nights will end up drawing revenue, at least 1,700 media personalities will attend, and an estimated $115 million in established television and digital media advertising will make bank accounts heftier. In securing the draft, Philadelphia will be taking the host title from Chicago, whose Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University oversaw the last two occasions, with Eagles fans hoping they will fondly remember this year’s, as the number two overall pick, quarterback Carson Wentz, will start Sunday’s 1 p.m. season opener versus the Cleveland Browns at Lincoln Financial Field. An accompanying release states that fans can enjoy free fun through Draft Town, a space that will include interactive exhibits, autograph sessions with current and former players, and opportunities to take pictures with the Vince Lombardi Trophy. “There are plenty of people who’ll want to hold that when the Eagles win the Super Bowl in three years,” Recchini said. “Here’s hoping we get someone good next year. Here’s hoping everyone makes out well, from the star athletes to the little guys.” SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@southphillyreview.com. Hanging with Fringe Performers Sean Green & Garrett Olthuis. NĂŠ0g 8OQ_cSZW\S @c^^ S ta f f W r i t e r
A
pole dancer collaborating with a ballet dancer? It must be Fringe Festival. Balancing atop a square that’s about an inch wide and dangling from the secondfloor ceiling of Flaunt Fitness studio in South Philly, Sean Green and Garrett Olthuis look perfectly in sync. But Fringe actually marks their first full performance together. Green has competed and performed as an aerial artist for just two years but already has the titles of 2015 Atlantic Regional Men’s Pole Champion and 2012 Mr. Gay Philadelphia under his belt. Olthuis is a UArts alum. Graduating with a BFA in classical ballet, he’s graced the stages in productions of everything from Les Miserables to Naked Boys Singing. Each planned a debut at Fringe this year but decided to join forces. “Garrett had planned to do his own Fringe show, and I asked him to be in my Fringe show, explains Green. “And he responded, ‘Don’t you remember I was doing my Fringe show?’ And I was like ‘Oh...well let’s just
do it together.’ And we talked about our ideas and they were similar, so it’s nice to see it evolve into something else together. In preparation for their “Grounded Autonomy aerial performance, which takes place this weekend at Brewerytown’a Glass Factory, the four-person SkyDance Philly ensemble (Green and Olthuis plus two supporting female cast members) were practicing six nights a week, mostly at Flaunt. It’s above Dom’s Auto Body on a residential block of Newbold rows, where a narrow dark staircase leads up to the fitness studio: a room filled with yoga balls, hanging panels of silk and many, many shiny stainless steel poles. Those poles aren’t just for strippers or soccer moms with Groupons eager to try something naughty. Men, it turns out, are flocking to the pole, too. Green, who is also a trainer at 12th Street Gym, says his classes are divided equally between the genders and that the popularity has spread through word of mouth. Though you might assume men would have an advantage in a performance art that relies so heavily on upper body strength, Green and Olthuis say that’s wrong. “Most of us [men] lack the flexibility, explains
Olthuis. “The girls were teaching us this move last week, where you, like, roll over your hip, and he [Sean] and I both were, like, screaming. When I hold my leg like this, I have nothing here! Where you have that extra layer of fat, no matter how skinny a girl is, there’s some. But for me, that’s just bone, that hurts.â€? Grounded Autonomy tells the story of young love, a concept both Olthuis and Green were each drawn to. “It’s sort of our two characters, who are ourselves essentially, and, we wanted to have sort of like our consciences or our best girlfriends‌ I have a ton of best girlfriends so they represent that for me, that shoulder to cry on, but the girl that’s going to smack you when you’re being ridiculous,â€? says Olthuis. To create the foursome dynamic of friends aiding the lovers, the duo brought in the balance square, a device which hangs from a center hook and radiates outward to chains affixed to each corner. With the four performers precariously upon the piece, precision plays a huge role, as each person’s weight must be strategically balanced against the others. The apparatus simultaneously moves both up and down and side to side. “We got the square so we

could work four of us in the air together. I’ve never done that before, Sean’s never done that before. We’ve all done doubles before. We’ve all done hammock before. We’ve all done silk before. We’ve all done pole before. But this is very different.â€? Aerial artistic performances seem to be a trend in 2016. Earlier this summer, Beck Epoch twirled over the Schuylkill and under the Strawberry Mansion Bridge, while Tangle Movement Arts presented the 10-women RetroAct earlier in the year. Green says these other acts aren’t competition, they’re opportunity. “I have personally found it’s hard to perform in most spaces because people are nervous that we’re going to hurt ourselves and sue them. So those liability issues, people still don’t trust you because they haven’t seen you do it in person.â€? Then there’s the not-so-incidental matter of ceiling strength. Before the group performs, it must first get approval from the building’s structural engineer. They’ve also honed their own rigging skills, with Green interning in a residency program at the Philadelphia School of Circus Arts and a workshop with Cirque du Soleil. “They gave me tons of advice to let me know what I had planned wasn’t actually the safest, so we went back and changed it all so now our space is super sound and it’s ready for the next set of performers coming in.â€? A few places, including Franky Bradley’s in Center City, have allowed the team to hook their equipment in the ceilings, but other places remain reluctant. Green has his eye on one place in particular: Midtown’s Voyeur Nightclub. “The owner of Voyeur said no, only because they have those chandeliers, so they don’t want us to bring down the chandeliers,â€? says Green. Olthuis interrupted: “I need to be on a chandelier, like, it’s on my dream list, like, where I wear crystals. You can see that vision, right?â€? Meanwhile, even as their Fringe Arts show represents the innocence of young love, Olthuis and Green concede there is a certain sex appeal of their craft. “People are always nervous because no matter what, it’s always going to be sexualized,â€? Olthuis says. “But then I look at this show and it’s much different, it’s much more refined, it’s much more a sweet performance where you’re just looking at how much strength someone has rather than the sexuality of it. Being naked is nothing for us, we’re ending the show pretty much in the nude.â€? “Well not totally naked,â€? Green says. “My parents will be there.â€?äääA>@

uring her captivating career as a determined dancer, Carolyn Marcinkiewicz has often needed to nurse her bloody feet, such has been the devotion that she has applied to the vocation.

As a tap and hip-hop instructor at the space, under the direction of Noel, a May 2013 South Philly Review Lifestyles subject, she loves interacting with children, dubbing them “a blast, and discussing how dance, through shows and movies, has become even more of a reminder that hard work pays off for loyal practitioners. With only one day remaining until she furthers her connection to the discipline, her place of employment, and Danny’s influence, she knows that no matter the challenge and regardless of the time that she will need to recover from external or internal struggles, dance will never fail her. “I love what I do, she proclaimed. “I look to make that pretty obvious with each class or opportunity because this is what drives me. This is what, aside from my connection to my family, goes a long way to defining me. MARCINKIEWICZ IS MARKING her third decade as a dancer, having begun lessons at age 4. The Northeast Philly product quickly and resolutely realized that if she truly wanted to become a standout, she would need to apply her will constantly to the pursuit of admirable execution and
tireless evolution. “I absolutely loved that sense of sacrifice that it was all going to take, she said of girlhood epiphanies. “When you’re young, you definitely are aware of the sparkles, the glitter, the costumes, the music, and the environment, but I was able to see much farther beyond all of that because I knew I wanted dance to be a huge part of me, not a passing fancy or something that had competition for my attention. Following enrollment at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls, Marcinkiewicz transferred to the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, putting in intense preparation when enrolled at the Hawthorne-based institution. The comprehension of her talent and tenacity bred thoughts of heading to New York City, but the University of the Arts ended up instilling more dedication within her and intensified family bonds because of her decision to remain a Philadelphia resident. A lifelong inhabitant of the metropolis, she values how influential it has been on her maturation, with her professional and personal lives benefiting. “I’ve really enjoyed being an active per-

That key theme in her life makes Marcinkiewicz especially compelled to etch in everyone’s long-term memory that victims of addiction are not statistics to use to make people feel better about their own dilemmas but are missed loved ones whose absences leave lasting voids. “I dearly miss my brother, she said, adding that his humor included a willingness to let everyone know that he taught her everything she knows. “I look forward to seeing how I’ll pull everything together. Marcinkiewicz offered of the expanse, with this present four-year run in Queen Village marking her second time as a resident of the proud section of the city. “I find it comforting and inspirational, especially down here because there’s an emphasis on creativity and responsibility to others. They have to sort through “the soup to clean up the mess. This is where Tulloch is a master. He is only 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and when crouched in his presnap stance, he can appear smaller but he is crafty at finding the ball carrier and then taking shortcuts to making the tackle. While that is the foundation to Schwartzy’s defense, he also knows exactly how it is supposed to operate. Fairly vivid and simple and fun. Dallas 10-6 The Eagles are fortunate they got To help him, he has had the power to go Schwartz. Had Doug Marrone been and bring a few of his former students in Washington 9-7 hired as a head coach this past offseason, to help him implement his plan. With teaching. Coaches are teachers, or at least are supposed to be. Schwartzy grew up outside of Baltimore, a lifelong fan of the Orioles and of the team with the original horseshoe. But he is also extremely intelligent. So when Georgetown University came calling to invite a young Jim Schwartz to come play at a small level of college football, the education was too good to refuse. He would go on to earn Academic AllAmerican, and become a team captain; but more impressively, he graduated No. 3 in his class at Georgetown. That type of intelligence is reserved for running hedge funds on Wall Street, or operating rooms at Johns Hopkins. Rarely are they used to put on the gym shorts and coach American football. But Schwartzy had the coaching bug, so upon graduation he would bounce around the country and make four stops in four years at four different colleges to earn a healthy postgraduate degree in the gridiron sport. His doctorate would be earned in his next stop with the Cleveland Browns, as a young guy named Bill Belichick was named the new head coach and he was looking for a sharp young mind to add to his impressive roster of young coaches. I have talked to many men who served as part Belichick’s regime in Cleveland at that time, and most would tell you that his best hire was Jim Schwartz. But when Art Modell pulled up his stakes in 1995 and announced that he was moving his iconic franchise to Baltimore, the rat pack in Cleveland dispersed in many directions. Schwartzy would follow his path back to his hometown city and earn a spot on Ted Marchibroda’s staff. No real positions were available, so he got himself a room at the local Howard Johnson’s for $25 per

“I say 16-0 (19-0 including postseason) because someone has to be the eternal optimist. Undefeated in the preseason. They have the seventh-easiest schedule in the league. Their division is a mess. And Section 206 will be loud.â€? Bill Kenny Northeast Times Staff Writer “Eagles 10-6. Eagles got a break when Minnesota lost Teddy Bridgewater for the season and Dallas lost Tony Romo for the ďŹ rst half of the season. That should be two wins they didn’t expect. EAGLES KICKOFF 2016
Turning over a new defense The Eagles are displaying some early consistency under new coordinator Jim Schwartz. opportunities,” Jenkins said. “Sometimes when you see a ball tipped up in the air like that, you plan for it and go after it. We were fortunate, we were backed up a little bit at the time, obviously were able to stop the drive.” Will this turnover party be able to transfer over to the regular season? “I hope so,” Jenkins said. “It’s hard to gauge everything off the preseason. We just want to go out and compete. We’re do-

fter three exhibition games - linebacker Mychal Kendricks was the only starter to play in the fourth game, a 14-6 win over the New York Jets - the Eagles defense registered some impressive numbers: Eight interceptions, 10 sacks and three fumble recoveries. The Birds’ first unit continued its penchant for creating turnovers and helping put points on the board, with four interceptions in the first half against Pittsburgh, one for a touchdown, leading the Birds to a 17-0 preseason win over the Steelers at Heinz Field. Nolan Carroll had two picks in the preseason, one against Steelers quarterback Landry Jones that he ran 38 yards for a touchdown. “It’s very encouraging when you get to take the ball away,” safety Malcolm Jenkins said recently. “Getting those are the highlights so far with our defense. Guys are making plays.” Eagles fans have to look back only to last season to realize how preseason play can be fool’s gold. Last year, Sam Bradford went 10-for-10 against Green Bay in the preseason, and many pundits and fans, locally and nationally, crowned the Eagles as Super Bowl champs, only to see the season deteriorate into a 7-9 dud that cost Chip Kelly his job. But having players perform well is better than the alternative. The defense and special teams have played well. “I think we’ve been playing well from the starters all the way to the fourth quarter,” Jenkins said. “Those turnovers can really impact games and the season. So it’s really important to continue to get turnovers.” Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz talked about putting a particular emphasis on getting turnovers. “Well, you can emphasize it all you want,” he said. “You can do drills all you want, but you’ve got to have players.

Standing up and giving a speech or putting a PowerPoint up or making an emphasis on a drill doesn’t get it done on the field. I think a lot of it comes from rushing the passer. You saw two of them came from knocking the ball away from the quarterback. Quarterbacks are very vulnerable to fumbles in the pocket. If you can hit those guys in the pocket, you can get some balls out; they throw it too quick, you see some coverage overlap. “We had a bunch of turnovers, which again, we are trying to win the game. And
those should help. We should have had more. We dropped a bunch of interceptions. I’m not giving pats on the back for what we did. We probably should have done even more and maybe not even make it close at the end of the game if we do a little bit more defensively.” Some said Jenkins’ interception against the Steelers was lucky. He was in the right place at the right time to grab the deflected pass. The veteran safety said it is a matter of being prepared. “It is more so taking advantage of our
ing well but there are a lot of other things we need to improve on. “ Carroll, who is a lock to grab a starting cornerback spot, talked about being prepared to take advantage of opportunities when they are presented. “It’s a process of elimination,” Carroll said. “I know what routes they run from film study, knowing what they like to run.” It was pointed out to Carroll the Eagles allowed only 32 points in the first three preseason games, including the shutout in Pittsburgh. He was asked what indication that gives him. “That we still have room to grow,” Carroll said. “There are things we really need to fine tune and not make the same mistake we’ve been making. There are a lot of things we need to clean up, which I think we’ll do.” So far, Eagles fans have to be happy. SPR Follow Al Thompson @thompsoniii

We all know that fame can prove fleeting, but with this recipe at your side, perhaps you, too, will likewise become a legend among your culinary beneficiaries.

Posterity might come to commend Michael Strauss for his talent at engendering a good time, which he does as co-owner of The Taproom on 19th, 2400 S. 19th St. On Saturday, the 47-year-old will pull double duty at the second annual South Philly SausageFest, with his Girard Estate venture and his burgeoning brainchild, Mike’s BBQ, among the entities looking to help attendees to reach hog heaven. “It’s another wonderful opportunity where we can connect with the South Philly community, the Roxborough inhabitant said from the Taproom, which has long involved tself in numerous neighborhood projects and celebrations since its 2013 inception. “Plus, I absolutely love barbeque. The New Jersey product conceived of Mike’s BBQ earlier this year and hopes to acquire a physical space soon. The idea marks another element of his evolution as a fascinated-with-food fellow whose motivation for being a proprietor lacks any mystery. “I’m in this field to make people happy, pure and simple, Strauss said. “There’s nothing like placing a plate in front of someone and having that person enjoy every bit of the experience. His love for maximizing such moments hrough barbecue endeavors has occurred hrough interactions with The Garage, 1231-33 E. Passyunk Ave., and Le Virtu, 1927 E. Passyunk Ave. Having enjoyed last year’s participation in the inaugural SausageFest, he knew Taproom would make another appearance but believed Mike’s BBQ would not be a part of helping the planners to bring home the bacon. “I don’t like to pass on any chance to assist a worthy cause, Strauss said. “With hat in mind, I’m thrilled to be able to have wo ways to help out.
The website for SausageFest notes the eight-hour event, which will transpire on West Passyunk Avenue from South Broad Street to 15th Street, owes its existence to the Newbold Community Development Corp., who will use the proceeds to support its street cleaning program, through which 10 disabled Philadelphia residents secure employment. Finding the cause “awesome, Strauss will look to cause connoisseurs to squeal with delight through his Smoked Pastrami Sausage Sandwich, which he prepares on a recently secured smoker. “The fat and the white wine are huge elements, so if you’re trying to make this at home, definitely don’t skimp, he said, laughing. “Also, if you are fortunate enough to have a smoker, consider grilling the sausage once the hour is up. The crunchiness will be amazing.
INGREDIENTS: Uncooked, raw corn beef 10 percent ground pork fat or beef fat White wine Swiss cheese Sriracha mayonnaise Coleslaw
D I R E C T I O N S : Put the corn beef through a grinder, or request that a butcher do it. Add the fat and the white wine, and stuff the contents in a sausage casing. Place in a refrigerator, and let it dry out for two days. Smoke the product at 275 degrees for an hour. Add it and the other ingredients to a roll.
