Philosophy for today

M

y grandson tells me that as part of his pre-law curriculum he is taking philosophy. That got me wondering how you become a philosopher. So, Immanuel Kant Jr. is growing up and he wants to follow in his father’s footsteps. He wants to be a philosopher. The first thing he must do is come up with a philosophy. Dad already took care of metaphysics and aesthetics, he thinks. And I better make up my mind that I’m never going to go out in grand style like Socrates and drink a cup of hemlock. I have to come up with my own shtick. I’ll have to get a good teaching gig at a university, so I’ll have medical coverage. Something Daddy Kant completely ignored when he complained to us about high copays. If I meet some hot girl in a bar do I tell her I’m going to be a philosopher? Does that help or hurt how the evening ends? By the way, where are all the female philosophers? How does a philosopher dress? Togas are out. Is a nice Harris tweed too pretentious? Maybe a faux suede sports coat with elbow patches? Not wild about elbow patches. Sandals are a must. No self-respecting philoso-

Full slate of celebrations By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he Philly AIDS Thrift, 710 S. 5th St., is commemorating 12 successful years in the battle for a world without AIDS with an all-day Saturday block party (Sept. 16) on the 700 blocks of South 5th Street and East Passyunk Avenue. The event kicks off at noon and goes until 6 p.m. Former South Philly Review Difference Maker Christina Kallas-Saritsoglou, who is the organization’s co-founder and manager, said there will be balloonists, face painters, a Halloween parade, as well as food trucks, artist/craft vendors and area businesses. WXPN DJ Robert Drake and the West Philadelphia Orchestra will provide musical entertainment while Reverend Mackenzie Moltov, the

sword-swallowing and fire-breathing clown, is putting together a thrilling performance. Besides having a good time, the Philly Aids Thrift is celebrating another major milestone as the store recently passed the $2 million mark in donations to area HIV/AIDS organizations, both through its partnership with the AIDS Fund and its own grant-making. … The Philadelphia International Block Party is slated for 5-8 p.m. Sept. 23 at Marconi Plaza, 13th Street and Oregon Avenue (east side of the park). The community event will include entertainment, music, arts and crafts and a beer garden to highlight the city’s diversity and international distinction as a World Heritage City. Call it a warmup for the Philadelphia Unity Cup soccer match taking place around the corner at 10th and Bigler street at 8:30 p.m. between Mexico and Ireland. …

St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church, 910 Watkins St., is holding its annual Italian Festival and Procession of Saints on Sunday, Oct. 1 from noon to 9 p.m. (rain or shine) on the 1700 block and beyond of South 9th Street (near 9th and Morris streets). There will be free parking at Neumann-Goretti High School, 1736 S. 10th St. Call 215-4631326. … Puentes de Salud health clinic, 1700 South St., is the subject of the upcoming HBO documentary “Clínica De Migrantes” debuting Monday, Sept. 25 1010:40 p.m., during Hispanic Heritage Month, exclusively on HBO. Today, undocumented immigrants face countless daily challenges, including obtain-

ing access to affordable health care. At Puentes de Salud, volunteers address this problem by serving uninsured Latino immigrants who have nowhere else to turn and are increasingly reluctant to seek care in the current political climate. It will spotlight the bonds between the doctors and their patients. From Maxim Pozdorovkin (HBO’s “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer”), “Clínica De Migrantes” will go beyond the politicized rhetoric to show the faces of real people in the middle of the immigration debate, asking if America can continue withholding basic necessities from an estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants. More to come in next week’s issue. …

Hurricane Irma may be dominating the headlines this week, but Hurricane Harvey did some serious damage to Texas. Alphabet Academy, 1510 E. Passyunk Ave., is doing its part to help the victims by holding a coin drive through Sept. 18. All proceeds will go to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. For more information, visit facebook. com/alphabetacademychildcare. … Updating last week’s cover story (“Making IT big”) about former Passyunk Square resident Jaeden Lieberher, the star of the Stephen King film adaptation of “It,” the movie had a record $117 million opening weekend at the box office. The number includes a very strong Thursday night of $13.5 million. Pre-release estimates were projected at $60-million plus. Have news to share? Email news@ southphillyreview.com.

LIFE COACH: Woman makes business out of aiding others with goals <<Continued from page 1 their knowledge. “People in leadership positions like managers or teachers or parents take the course to help out in that area of their lives,” said Boyle, a South Philadelphia native. Clients are given two options; to sign up for one one-hour session, or to sign up for 10 one-hour sessions that will take place over the span of two and a half months. Sessions can be done in Boyle’s home, though most choose to take sessions from the comfort of their own homes over the phone. Across the span of these sessions, Boyle helps clients answer these three questions about their goal, in order: why, how and what. Why? The why is an important question to ask, because it helps reveal the necessity of the goal. Boyle’s why is an easy one. She used to work as a cleaner and office organizer, which required her to talk to her clients to figure out what they like. “As I asked them what they liked to do so I can create a space for them, they started to give me personal information about their lives,” she said. “I would naturally be coaching them without even realize I was coaching.” A customer asked her if she was a life coach, and that was when she realized she had inadvertently been acting as one. After doing research, she decided to make the career move. She founded Life Coach Philly in 2009. “Clients may come in not believing themselves, and I’m seeing them through, and knowing they are going to succeed,” she said. “There’s no doubt

LOGAN KRUM /South Philly Review

Paula Michele Boyle provides life advice to clients, and trains prospective life coach students so they may also spread their knowledge. in my mind if they come through with this process, they will get what they want. However, the goal needs to be attainable.” How? When they get to the how section, clients ask themselves what methods they have already tried to achieve their goal, and other methods they might take. For potential life coaches, Life Coach Philly may be the “how” they are looking for. Boyle and Dr. Kalind Bakshi serve as master coaches, who provide guidance for an individualized program

that helps students become life coaches themselves. When she helped design the program students take, Boyle wanted to make sure she wasn’t hogging all the success to herself. “I started to see that people’s lives were transforming, and I decided I wanted to see everyone with these skills,” she said. The training process takes place over the course of one month with four classes. Students can take on modules at their own pace or work with one of the coaches one on one. At the end of each mod-

ule, there is an assignment. What students do once they complete the course is up to them. They may choose to become a life coach themselves, or they may use the knowledge to enhance their current careers. “Most employers will look for people with the skills the course teaches,” Boyle said. Boyle said she has created a network of people who have created the course, and continues to help them with their careers and future endeavors. The last module teaches students marketing skills if they decide to life coach themselves. What? Boyle recalls one client who came to her with an “empty nest situation.” She was a single mom whose kids had moved away and had lost her job of 30 years. She didn’t know what to do next. They worked together to find the client’s “what.” What does she want in life? Boyle recalled the amazement she felt as she watched the client completely rebuild her life in a couple of months. The client landed an “excellent” position (details withheld, of course), and Boyle was in awe of her transformation. That’s Boyle’s own “what.” The “what” part is figuring out if what the client thinks they want is in line with what they truly want. For Boyle, that’s the easiest part. She had trouble deliberating which example she wanted to talk about. “[The client’s] life changed right before our eyes,” Boyle said. “She used what we discussed and went into a higher consciousness.”

Prospective students and clients can visit lifecoachphilly.com for more information and to sign up for classes or sessions.

REMEMBER WHEN

The famous 70 By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

ho remembers the South Philly Review Famous 500 issue? We are talking an extensive list of A-list talent who made their respective marks in the worlds of music, television, sports, politics and other areas. Angelo Dundee, the man who trained the likes of Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard, once called South Philly home. So did Irvin Kershner, the man who directed “The Empire Strikes Back.” Rob McElhenney, the executive producer, writer and star of the FX hit comedy “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” may have been too young for the first famous edition, but there is no doubt he must be included in any current conversation. Former Mayor Frank Rizzo may be the center of a controversial debate these days, but he is one of the most beloved figures to ever come out of South Philly. Speaking of current stars, Jaeden Lieberher, who plays Bill Denbrough in the hit movie “It” also has strong South Philly ties. We could go on and on with the likes of Mario Lanza, Marian Anderson, Chubby Checker, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Rydell, Jack Klugman, Sherman Hemsley, Al Martino, James Darren, Paul Arizin and Earl “The Pearl” Monroe, but you get the point. Instead of filling the pages of this week’s issues with an endless list of worthy names, we are going to take a step back and let you, our loyal readers, weigh in on the conversation. The South Philly Review’s 70th anniversary issue is coming out on Nov. 29 (it will be here before you know it) and will include a section once again devoted to former and current stars who called South Philly home. Feel free to debate among yourselves, and share with us what names make the cut and why. Unlike the judges on the NBC hit reality shows “The Voice” and “America’s Got Talent,” the stars we are talking about here have already achieved greatness and don’t need the approval from a panel of judges to determine whether or not he or she is worthy of inclusion. Like those talent showcases, there are only 70 spots available and some tough decisions will have to be made. Who would you put on the list? We will be accepting names via email, Facebook and Twitter, so be on the lookout for our social media posts. The final list will be a combination of South Philly Review staff selections and reader input. Just to be clear, the likes of fictional Rocky Balboa and Will Smith, who is West Philly born and raised, will not be considered. Sorry. Shouting “Yo Rocky!,” however, is not against the rules. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let the famous South Philly name game begin. Send your list of five, 10, 50 or all 70 - there is no limit. Keep an eye on our social media channels for random questions tied into the Famous 70. Check out next week’s Review for more details about our 70th anniversary edition. Email your list of names to news@southphillyreview. com.

Taking a stand for those who kneel Standing 4 Kaepernick protest planned prior to the Sept. 24 Eagles home opener By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

O

ver the past year, Colin Kaepernick, 29, has gone from a well-known American football quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, to a free agent best known for his support of the Black Lives Matter movement. As some believe his controversial stance has led to his being unsigned through the first week of the NFL regular season, Tim Clark, an Upper Dublin native now living in New York City, has organized a series of Standing 4 Kaepernick Protests set to take place before the first game at each stadium. Locally, his official Standing 4 Kaepernick Protest will take place at Lincoln Financial Field, 1 Lincoln Financial Way, at 11 a.m. on Sept. 24 prior to the Eagles home opener against the Giants (1 p.m. kickoff). “This is not about Colin Kaepernick, this is about what the NFL did and is doing to Colin Kaepernick,” Clark, a 37-year-old middle school teacher said. “His statistics and recent Super Bowl experience make it very clear that he is deserving of an NFL roster spot.” Clark further explained that, as an avid football fan, he came up with the idea to organize the Stand 4 Kaepernick movement and protests after conversing with a friend about the athlete’s free-agent status within the NFL. From there, he took to Facebook to share a long message to friends asking whether they thought it best that he denounce the NFL’s handling of the Kaepernick protesting by personally boycotting and not watching or attending league games. “Through that, different ideas, suggestions and perspectives came up, but the main comment was that, what good does it do if I just don’t watch? That’s not going to change anything,” Clark said. “I wanted to do something that the NFL would actually feel, so I wanted to try to get others to boycott, show up and voice their concerns.” From there, Clark founded the website standing4Kaepernick.org and a Facebook page for move-

ment. Stating that “Colin Kaepernick knelt for us, and now we must stand for him,” Clark further created individual events from his Facebook page for each home opening NFL game across the country. “When [Kaepernick] was comfortable he was making lots of money, and when he took a risk he sacrificed so much to raise awareness for other people’s struggles,” Clark said. “The NFL is clearly silencing one of its athletes for raising awareness of police brutality and other racial injustices in America.” Designed to be a “peaceful protest of police brutality and other racial injustices [which] has led to [Kaepernick] being blackballed by the NFL,” Clark hopes the protest in South Philly, as well as the more than a dozen others, will bring attention to the ath-

lete’s mistreatment, and to the issues that he has raised. “By Standing 4 Kaepernick, we are standing for players’ ability to raise awareness by taking small steps, such as not standing for the National Anthem, without losing their jobs,” Clark wrote on the event’s Facebook page. He added he hopes that as a result of these protests, the NFL will realize the opinions of all fans, not just those who view his protests as anti-troops, should be factored into whether to hire Kaepernick back. Additionally, Clark noted the athlete has made clear that he supports the troops, especially through modifying his protest from sitting during the National Anthem to then kneeling. “I’m not saying he’s the best quarterback in the

NFL,” Clark said. “I’m just saying that punishing him for speaking out because it’s best for business, or sweeping the issues under the rug for fear of upsetting the fan base, are not acceptable.” So, with the hashtag, #S4KPhiladelphia, he hopes that community members will come out to take a stand against the NFL for silencing and punishing players who speak out against oppression. While not condoning any violence or damage, he also hopes the initiative helps to protect players’ ability to raise awareness for causes they are passionate about, and deters the league from solely doing what’s best for business. Hot property on the auction block in Queen Village A family that until recently owned and operated a company with more than 400 billboards in and around Philadelphia, is set to auction off its Queen Village mansion Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Hilton at Penn’s Landing. Following the May passing of Steen Outdoor Advertising’s president and Philadelphia business icon Terry Steen, and the sale of the company, the family no longer has a need for the unique home at 113-121 Bainbridge St. The five-bedroom, five-bath house covers five lots and measures about 7,000 square feet. A wall and gates surround the property, giving it the look of an urban palace. The home, which includes a

three-car garage, was built to resemble a bygone architectural era, features stained glass, marble, chandeliers and large living, dining and game rooms. “This one-of-a-kind home was designed with every detail meticulously thought out,” Bob Dann, COO of Max Spann Real Estate and Auction Company, said. “From the architectural molding in every room to the imported stained-glass rotunda and marble steps, this home is truly a showplace.” Like all the homes along Front Street in Queen Village, the Steen’s property has easy access to Columbus Boulevard, I-76 and

I-95 as well as South Street and Society Hill. The new owner will also have easy access to the roof deck (with hot tub) via the elevator. “Because Queen Village is a very desirable neighborhood and because the property spans five lots, it is ideal for a family that likes to entertain or a developer to convert the site to multiple townhomes or apartments.” Dann said. Previously asking $2.6 million, the property is now guaranteed to sell at or above the minimum bid of $850,000. Those wanting to tour the home will have three opportunities on Sept. 17, Sept. 20 and Oct. 1. All tours are from noon to 2 p.m.

Special to South Philly Review

Chief Kristin Powers, left, and Asst. Chief Katherine McDermott of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office South Division.

DA’s South Division promotes new leadership By Lindsey Nolen SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

A

s the two leadership jobs within the South Division of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office opened, the office chose to promote from within to fill the roles. Kristin Powers will serve as chief and Kate McDermott as assistant chief, helping to ensure the overall success of the division in court and in the community. Powers’ ascension to the role of chief began when she graduated law school from the University of Buffalo and immediately relocated to Philly. For the next 11 years, she has remained employed by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, being promoted to assistant chief in November 2016. Then, in late June she was promoted to chief – a role which she immediately jumped at the opportunity to take on. Although she noted the roles of assistant chief and chief often overlap and are very similar, she now must be more cognizant of the “bigger picture,” including the office in its entirety. “Now my role involves a lot more training and making strategic decisions, like [which district attorneys] should get what type of cases,” Powers, a 36-year-old Long Island, N.Y., native, said. “I also work on intelligence gathering, making sure there’s an appropriate bail, getting a grip on what types of crimes are taking place in each district, conducting periodic reviews and seeing what’s on the horizon.” A resident of South Philly, Powers hopes to use her role as chief in

the immediate future to help ensure all DAs are improving their skill sets, that their caseloads are even and that all staff members have a good rapport with one another. Additionally, she hopes to aid in the pursuit of sentencing justice as quickly as possible, focusing on the right crimes and helping residents feel confident the office is always doing right on the community’s behalf. “It feels great to have been chosen as the next chief, and to be looked upon as someone who can run a whole division,” Powers said. “It’s a great opportunity and I was very excited when it came up.” Similarly, McDermott commented that being promoted to assistant chief felt great and that it’s an accomplishment she had always hoped to attain. This is largely because growing up her father was a district attorney and from a young age she remembers hearing him come home and talk about his goals and accomplishments. “I’m appreciative that I’m able to work [in the District Attorney’s Office] and to continue my family tradition,” McDermott, 33, said. “My dad’s equally as happy as I am, and he likes to hear any stories about trials and court, they bring him back to the time when he was here.” She also was notified of the promotion in June. McDermott received her undergraduate degree from St. Joseph’s University, and her law school diploma from Drexel University. Before beginning law school, she had spent two years working as a paralegal in the DA’s Office, and upon graduating she returned to serve as an assistant DA. “I was a DA in the South Division and went through all the rota-

tions,” McDermott said. “I started by doing trial work, then handling misdemeanor cases in municipal court, spent nine months in juvenile court processing cases, began a major felonies rotation in the charging division and was then the vertical prosecutor of the South Division who processed all shootings.” Despite being promoted, McDermott says she was able to keep some of her existing cases, as she believes it is important for supervisors to continue doing trial work, learning and experiencing new things. In managing this workload in addition to serving as assistant chief, she hopes to further be able to help move cases along efficiently, have everyone work together in coordination and to help other staff members within the courthouse in whatever ways she can. According to Cameron L. Kline, spokesperson of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office, the office prides itself in making sure its trial staff has the opportunity to not just move horizontally overseeing different categories of cases, but to move vertically as well. Thus, he explained that when the office has to fill a position, it looks first to those who have continuously taken on increasingly challenging and complicated cases. “We also make sure our district attorneys rotate throughout the departments so that if they are to be promoted to chief or assistant chief that they have a wide understanding of the different elements within the office of roughly 600 men and women,” Kline said. “Vertical prosecution helps to make sure that the district attorneys, police departments and community members and activists are all able to work together in the same area, which makes prosecutions more efficient and effective.”

The Philadelphia Police Department released surveillance footage related to an Aug. 31 incident at Little Caesar’s Pizza, 2895 Grays Ferry Ave. At 10:30 p.m., four unknown black males were seen on video entering. Once inside, the suspects approached the counter, and as the store was closing, two suspects pretended to jump over the counter. As the suspects were leaving, one took several bottles of soda from the refrigerator and exited the store. When an employee attempted to get the license plate number to the suspect’s vehicle, the second suspect pointed a handgun at him threatening to shoot. Then, the first suspect punched the employee, knocking him to the ground. He and the remaining suspects then fled in a black Nissan in an unknown direction. To report information, call South Detectives at 215-685-1635, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

FOOD SCENE

The buzz of Washington Avenue Since its spring opening, Chick’s continues to be a crowd-pleaser among customers and critics By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

W

hen people talk about eating on the avenue, they’re usually referring to East Passyunk Avenue, a foodie destination that continues to generate national buzz. When the husband-and-wife team of Philip and Gina Narducci started drawing up plans for a new restaurant concept two years ago, they picked a spot on the other avenue, 1805 Washington Ave. to be exact. We are talking about a block that includes an Advance Auto Parts, Chew Playground and other small businesses. When the Philadelphia Eagles were playing the Washington Redskins on Sunday, the 100-seat Chick’s is where the standing-roomonly crowd gathered. But it wasn’t just to watch the game – the customers were there enjoying the great food and cocktails that have been receiving their share of buzz from critics. Chick’s is included on the Zagat’s list of Best New Restaurants and Bars in Philadelphia, as well as Hottest Bars in Philadelphia. Not bad for a restaurant that welcomed its first guests in April. Channel 6 also did a segment at the location over the weekend. Reaching “hot in Philly” status included its share of nervous moments, as it’s part of the turf that comes with any new restaurant, but the husband-andwife team couldn’t be happier with the way things are going. “You can’t get a better rating. It makes us proud,” Philip said. “We have a good thing here,” Gina said. Like a newborn baby, Gina and Philip are dedicating endless hours to overseeing its development. The Chick’s team started with baby steps, focusing on lunch and dinner service the first month. They introduced weekend brunch a month later. Doing 200 to 300 covers on Friday and Saturday nights is becoming a weekly routine. The gnocchi, chicken wings, mussels (Pho, Italian Market, traditional or Chick’s style) and hamburgers are some of the much talked about menu items.

Others are coming in for the 12- or 18inch pizza pies, which are on a separate menu, with many of them having a creative name that coincides with the toppings. Sergeant pepper may sound like something made famous by the legendary Beatles, but in Chick’s case, the name ties into the type of pepperoni they use. It includes tomato, mozzarella, grana padano, cup and char pepperoni. The big rock, which consists of tomato, fior di latte, provolone, sweet Italian sausage and basil, is another one of the top sellers. Starting Monday, new chef William Carroll is coming aboard to lead the kitchen team at Chick’s. He will handle rolling out some new, yet-tobe-announced fall items to the menu,

such as soups, new burgers and seasonal specials. So far, “consistency” has been the main ingredient to the restaurant’s quick rise to the top of the Philly scene. Gina and Philip take a hands-on approach to making sure the food offerings are up to par. “If we find something is off a little, we will taste the food and tell the kitchen [staff] so they can get it back on track,” Gina said. The management team also seeks

feedback from the customers. With so many great restaurants to choose from around South Philly, there is little room for error. Pleasing the regulars and new customers on a daily basis has been a top priority for Gina and Phillip, who are known to put in 16-hour days at the restaurant. “We want to make people happy,” Gina said. This restaurant passion project marks a major career change for Gina,

who spent more than 20 years working in the school system, which included working on the administrative end at String Theory Charter Schools. While the two fields may seem completely different on paper, Gina sees the similarities between the two. “It’s the same principle as when you are managing people. You’re doing schedules and keeping everybody motivated,” she said. Philip has previous experience in the food and entertainment industry, but this is the first in which he has the food and liquor under the same roof. Chick’s offers 24 beers on tap and a total of 60 different selections. Like the food, the restaurant adjusts the beer menu based on the season. The team counts on assistant manager Jayne Campbell and bartender/bar manager Angie Walsh to stay on top of the wine, beer and cocktail selections. As far as the time commitment goes, Gina responded “I always worked 16hour days.” Besides the food, Chick’s has a Cheers-like vibe to it. Yes, we are talking about the hit NBC sitcom from the 1980s and 90s where the staff and customers shouted “NORM!” everytime Norm Peterson arrived. Early Monday afternoon, Gina and Phillip were sitting at a table for two by the front door of the restaurant having a conversation, but each time a customer walked in, Philip and Gina made sure to say hello, even wishing one customer happy birthday. It fits in with the lyrics to the show’s theme song … Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they’re always glad you came. ... With condos and new retail stores under construction at Broad Street and Washington Avenue, Chick’s is expected to continue playing a big part in the revitalization of Washington Avenue.

Xfinity Live! set to host Oktoberfest celebration By Andrea Cantor SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

S

tart searching for some lederhosen and loosen those pants for an imminent beer belly, because the Oktoberfest season is once again rearing its head. The all-out beer festival is a time-honored tradition with German origins. For you history buffs, Oktoberfest began in 1810 as a celebratory event after King Ludwig I, then crowned Prince Ludwig, married Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen in Bavaria. Got it? OK, moving on ... So how should a Germanophile celebrate in Philly 2017? Believe it or not, it’s heading to South Philadelphia, the home of Philadelphia sports, cheesesteaks and the Mummers. Oktoberfest Live! at Xfinity Live!, 1100 Pattison Ave., has been raved as one of the best spots to celebrate the German festival by USA Today. In fact, the publication ranked the festival as one of the top 20 Oktoberfests in the country. “We have close to 8,000 people come out; there’s over 250 different kinds of beers, and over 80 breweries, Anthony Dagrosa, vice president of marketing for Xfinity Live!, said. “We use all of our venues inside and our parking lot outside. It’s a

huge festival, all kinds of games, activities, so it’s actually a very cool event. This year’s event will be held on Sat., Sept. 30 from 3-7pm. However, VIP ticket holders gain entry an hour early and have access to exclusive areas. General admission tickets are $45 and VIP tickets are $60, which Dagrosa claimed is “cheaper than other beer festivals in the area. With the

price of admission, guests receive a five-ounce sampling mug to try the different brews. Although Dagrosa maintains the “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it mentality, there will be some changes to the venue’s sixth annual Oktoberfest. “We have some more beers. We have some more expanded VIP areas. We are working on decorations, bands, and newer activities, explained Dag-

rosa who has been with Xfinity Live! Philadelphia since March 2015. Another added feature to the event is a wine tasting. While the exact particulars of the incorporation of wine are still being worked out, wine as well as a specialty cocktails and ciders will offer non-beer drinkers something to be excited about. Dagrosa, who hopes the wine tasting will be served as a flight, also noted that there will be a number of gluten-free beers for those who have dietary restrictions. According to Dagrosa, many people will travel by the subway and by LYFT, the driving service that has a partnership with Xfinity Live! Philadelphia. LYFT newbies are able to enter the promo code EVENTS for $50 credits toward first rides. The event also has designated driver tickets for $20, where visitors will have access to soft drinks, but no alcohol. Xfinity Live! Philadelphia’s motto could be that bigger is better. “Just our sheer size makes us different, that we can hold 8,000 people is something that is unique with us, and we can do that comfortably,â€? Dagrosa said. “You are right here, in the middle of the sports complex. There is a Phillies game that day ‌ so if you are going to the game, you can come after or before.â€?

EAGLES INSIDER

Eagles get passing grade on first of many tough tests

A

s the Eagles flexed some muscle and outscored the Washington Redskins 11-0 in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s season-opening 30-17 win, some things about this team became initially apparent as strengths the team needs to ride if it hopes to make a playoff run this year. One, the anticipated significant “next step by second-year quarterback Carson Wentz is very much on schedule. He was mostly brilliant in the NFC East battle, escaping blitz pressure and avoiding litter in the pocket to complete 26-of-39 passes for 307 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Wentz, a sturdy 6-feet-5, 240 pounds, seems capable of hoisting the offense on his back and carrying it for a full season. Two, the Eagles have a defensive front four that is the real deal and is capable of dominating games. Philadelphia registered four sacks of quarterback Kirk Cousins and forced two fumbles, both of which the Eagles recovered and one that tackle Fletcher Cox brought back 20 yards for a game-clinching touchdown. It’s a good thing the Eagles have both of those strengths, because they’ve got some work to do in a lot of areas as they prepare for the Kansas City

On offense, the Eagles are going to have WR Ă€QG D ZD\ WR UXQ WKH EDOO FRQVLVWHQWO\ VRPHWKLQJ WKH\ GLGQ¡W GR DW :DVKLQJWRQ

Chiefs on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The most significant piece of business to attend to is the defensive secondary, which took a big hit when cornerback Ronald Darby went down in the first half of Sunday’s game at FedEx Field with a severe ankle injury. Darby is the Eagles’ most athletic and dynamic cornerback; his speed enables the Eagles to match him up against the NFL’s fastest wide receivers. Without Darby, the Eagles are scrambling. Make no mistake, opposing defenses are going to test the Eagles’ offense, starting immediately. Jalen Mills and Patrick Robinson are the starting cornerbacks, with Dexter McDougle gaining a large slice of the playing time as a nickel corner-

back and the Eagles mixing and matching their defensive personnel the rest of the time. To mitigate the loss of Darby, the Eagles are going to have to win in the strategy department. So having a front four that stuffs the run and crushes a quarterback’s protection is the best way to safeguard a secondary that took a big hit when Darby went down. And the Eagles have that with a deep lot of pass rushers off the edge and a dynamic tandem of Cox and Tim Jernigan inside at tackle. Maybe defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz can make it all work, led by the front four. When the defense was whole, with Darby on the field, the Eagles had a chance to be really outstanding. Now? We’ll see. Darby is a big loss. On offense, the Eagles are going to have to find a way to run the ball consistently, something they didn’t do at Washington (58 yards, 24 rushes).

They’re going to have to give the offensive line and Wentz a break by establishing the ground attack. Washington blitzed the Eagles all game, hit Wentz too often and limited the Eagles to a pair of touchdowns scored. This is a football team that is a work in progress, just like most teams early in the season. If the Eagles can beat Kansas City and get to 2-0 on the road, well, the immediate prospects are extremely bright. As encouraging as Sunday’s win was, by Monday the Eagles had their sights set on internal improvements and a game plan preparing for a Chiefs team that dismantled New England to open the NFL season. Feel great about the win over Washington. Understand, also, that the climb remains just as daunting as injuries and inconsistencies are counted and addressed.
