Dream lover

M

y mission today, dear dreamer, is to help you understand President Donald Trump’s decision on DACA. Please bear with me. Don’t shoot me. I am only the messenger. I am a dream lover – forgive me, Bobby Darin. Both President Trump and his Attorney General Jeff Sessions have asked me to perform this service because they are too busy with other pursuits – Mr. Trump with his golf game and Mr. Sessions with his efforts to learn more about the Yankee North, to answer your questions. I trust you will find this column informative. DACA stands for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. If you were brought into this country illegally and are under the age of 16, then DACA applies to you. You have whimsically and perhaps wishfully been labeled a “dreamer.” I realize politicians are not normally given to whimsy, but this is an exception to that rule. There are approximately 800,000 of you living in this country, going to school and/or working. You have been vetted for criminal records and therefore likely to be less of a threat than your average American. We Americans appreciate that very much. Last week President Trump gave Congress six months to figure out what to do with you. This means that in six months you could be deported to your country of origin See CARDELLA, page 9>>

Op-Ed Christopher Columbus – Admiral of the Ocean Sea

A

By Gloria Cipollini Endres

s we prepare to celebrate another national holiday commemorating the first landing, on Oct. 12, 1492, by the Renaissance Italianborn explorer Christopher Columbus on the Caribbean island he named San Salvador, many modern pundits are taking issue with his achievements, character and legacy. They strongly object, for example, to the word “discover” because, after all, there were already millions of indigenous people here, plus those Viking sailors who reached the North American continent earlier. They want to eliminate his images and change the name of the holiday and any place that honors him. Complaining about naming part of Delaware Avenue “Columbus Boulevard” is just one example. Behind their agenda is an attempt to denigrate his Italian Catholic heritage, while elevating an aboriginal culture to an unrealistic status. The mistake these protesters make is judging the man through the lens of modern mores and politics, where it does not apply. Columbus did navigate a voyage of discovery. He was searching for a safer and faster route to the gold, spices, and other goods of the Orient. He hoped that this treasure would not only help defend and spread Christianity but also enrich his royal sponsors, himself and his descendants. The Spanish monarchs, Ferdinand and Isabella, promised to name him Admiral of the Ocean Sea if he was successful. His motivations were in descending order: God; Gold; and Glory. Christopher Columbus may not have been the first human being to set foot on the American continents, but he literally opened a vast New World to the rest of humanity. According to the Order of the Sons of Italy, “The arrival of Columbus in 1492 marks the beginning of recorded history in America.” Through storms, shipwrecks and failing health, Columbus made altogether four voyages to the New World. He continued to believe that Cuba was part of China, but during his third voyage, he discovered a river of fresh water flowing into the ocean from what is now Venezuela and understood that he had found a new continent. His ships just missed landing in Florida, so he never actually touched North America. He always believed that this new southern landmass was just hanging off China. There have been concerns about the way Columbus treated the natives he encountered. Although he befriended the first people he met, he did capture others and brought them back to show the Spanish Court, along with gold jewSee COLUMBUS, page 5>>

COLUMBUS: Explorer had big impact on world

<<Continued from page 4 elry, pearls, a tobacco plant, a pineapple and a turkey. The king and queen ordered him to return and establish friendly relations with the natives. But when Columbus returned on his second voyage to Hispaniola, where he had left some of his men, he learned they had all been killed in a dispute with the natives. Indigenous people had their own violent traditions, including: tribal warfare, torture, human sacrifice, and cannibalism. Slavery was widely practiced in the 15th century around the world, including by some Native American tribes. Columbus, against the wishes of the Crown, captured more than a thousand people from one tribe and handed them to another tribe as slaves. Columbus did try unsuccessfully to enslave and transport about 560 people back to Spain. About 40 percent died en route and the rest were very ill when they landed. Some of the survivors were returned to the Americas. Ferdinand and Isabella vehemently ruled against continuing the slave trade. Columbus switched to a policy he learned from the Aztec tribute system, where he required residents of Cicao on Hispaniola to find and deliver a set amount of gold every three months. Punishment for not delivering was severe. Columbus also had

to quell uprisings from both sailors and Spanish settlers who were disappointed and angry that they could not find riches in abundance. It was altogether a very violent time. For seven years, Columbus contended not only with rebellions and poor health, but also arrest and punishment by the Crown for “mismanagement. They finally gave him his freedom and new ships for his fourth and last voyage – still searching for the illusive westward passage to India. Clearly, Christopher Columbus was both a man of his time and ahead of his time. Navigating an uncharted ocean (with no knowledge of longitude) in wooden ships with nothing to guide him but his compass, the stars, moon and sun, took uncommon courage. He gambled that he was going to find a route to the East Indies that would enrich his patrons, his church and himself. As Admiral of the Ocean Sea, what he accomplished instead was a transfer of cultures, plants, animals, human populations, technology and ideas between two hemispheres. Native Americans exchanged food crops like: avocados, beans, bell peppers, cocoa, corn, peanuts, pineapples and potatoes for European wheat, barley and sugarcane. (The American potato later saved countless European lives during the next mini ice age be-

cause a tuber grows underground.) While Europeans enjoyed new animals like the turkey, the native people fell in love with the horse, as a beast of burden, and to expand their hunting territory. They also benefited from the importation of pigs, dogs, chickens, sheep, goats and cattle which Columbus brought on his second journey. Sadly, included in that exchange, was deadly cross contamination. While the native people of the Americas succumbed to diseases like smallpox, measles, whooping cough, chicken pox, bubonic plague and typhus, Spanish sailors returned to Europe with syphilis. A pandemic they called “The Pox cost the lives of millions. Meanwhile, the deaths of so many native people caused a labor shortage that eventually prompted the importation of African slaves, which is why the populations of the Caribbean Islands remain primarily black. European customs, technology, and languages overwhelmed the New World. From those first explorations and conquests emerged new civilizations and new nations. The voyages of Christopher Columbus ultimately laid the groundwork for what would later become the greatest nation in history, the United States of America. For that alone he deserves a parade on Broad Street.

We’ll tell everyone else.

South Division Narcotics team receives Award of Valor By Lindsey Nolen

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

emonstrating both courage and commitment to their work, members of the Philadelphia Police Department’s South Division Narcotics team succeeded in removing a criminal and contraband from the South Philadelphia streets last New Year’s Eve. In response to their heroic acts, Sgt. Jason Sommerville, Officer Matthew Czarnecki and Officer Raymond Sima were the recipients of the National Liberty Museum’s Team Award of Valor, given out on Sept. 12, at the National Liberty Museum. The awards honor extraordinary police officers and firefighters for their acts of heroism, and for being role models in their communities. “It was very humbling [to receive this award],” Sommerville, who said he first learned about being honored with the award in mid-July, said. I know firsthand that when I took this job and oath that I didn’t take it to receive awards, but to serve my community. I’m a South Philly guy, born and raised, and to have the opportunity to service the community and my family of my own means a lot to me.” The three honorees put themselves in a dangerous situation on the night of the incident to ensure the safety of the community. They were dispatched to the scene of the crime to monitor a block party in an area of South Philadelphia that is a hub for the “2-3-4” street gang. As the gang had been responsible for several acts of violence throughout the South Philadelphia area, according to police, and because the department tends to receive an influx in reported gunshots on New Year’s Eve, Sommerville, Czarnecki and Sima arrived to make sure that everything was

“going smoothly.” However, after arriving on the scene wearing full uniform in an unmarked vehicle, an unknown male stepped out from the crowd and, while looking directly at the officers, raised a loaded gun and fired eight rapid shots into the air. “My first concern was for the safety of everyone who was out there,” Sommerville, who was raised in Point Breeze, said. “It was midnight, but because it was New Year’s Eve there were women and children outside. We just wanted to bring the gunman to a faithful resolution, preserving the life of everyone, including that of the gunman.” Thus, while surrounded by a crowd of hundreds of people, the officers drew their weapons and moved forward shouting for the assailant to drop his weapon. Although he refused, they continued to approach him and eventually the offender threw his weapon into an adjacent vehicle (which was was retrieved by an unknown woman who attempted to conceal it) and fled toward the crowd. “The officers showed great restraint by giving him verbal commands at gunpoint to make him drop his weapon,” Sommerville said. “However, the large crowd became hostile because they didn’t know what was going on, and because of the heightened state of community relations between police and the public at the time. We had to keep the crowd under control to protect the crime scene and everyone else out there.” While Sommerville worked to keep the crowd at bay until back up arrived, Czarnecki was able to prevent the male assailant from getting away and placed him under arrest, and Sima arrested the female accomplice and retrieved the weapon. It was for these courageous acts that the Philadelphia Police Department’s South Division Narcotics team was able to secure the arrest of a dangerous felon, and later the acquisition of several weapons and drugs that were removed from Philadelphia streets, earning them the Team Award of Valor.

He is joining forces with fellow South Philly native Bob Pantano, who will serve as executive producer. Pantano is of course being inducted into the Philly Music Walk of Fame next month. He passed away in June

at the age of 78. When the organization started putting together plans for a fall block party, it was a no-brainer to name it after the former president – the only one in EOM’s 51-year history. The Ed McBride Block Party is taking place Saturday, Oct. 14, noon-8 p.m. (rain date is Oct. 15). It is being hosted by Moonshine Philly on East Moyamensing Avenue between Mifflin and McClellan streets, and will include live music, wiffle ball and corn-hole tournaments, food, a beer garden, games/activities for the kids, giveaways and more. Admission is free, with all proceeds benefiting EOM and the continued offering of youth athletic programs. Moonshine, Chef Big Rube’s Famous Fried Chicken, Uncle Oogies and Hog Face BBQ are some of the confirmed participants. The wiffle ball tournament will consist of three-person teams while the corn-hole tournament will have two members per team. The $25 per person entry fee includes a T-shirt and discounted drinks. <<Continued from page 1 health-care services. In doing so, Pozdorovkin shadowed student and doctor volunteers who run the clinic, designed to provide pro bono medical care to undocumented immigrants. Seeing as undocumented immigrants are unable to purchase health insurance and receive no regular medical care by law, many of these people are forced to bypass preventive or comprehensive medicine, and therefore must seek out an emergency room once symptoms worsen or become extreme. According to Larson, this is increasingly problematic because, as immigrants are forced to seek out emergency room settings, this ties up resources and forces health-care systems to absorb much of the expense. “One way or the other, resources are limited. We have thousands of patients at the clinic who make roughly 3,000 total visits a year, and if we weren’t here they would end up in the emergency room,” Larson, who has worked in an emergency department full-time for 30 years, said. “Most patients don’t require that level of service, and the clinic can help to save resources, time, energy and to make care more accessible.” Larson chose to involve himself in this work at Puentes De Salud, the clinic featured in the documentary, as it helped leverage his interests, work as an educator, travels abroad and experiences in global health. He noted that, although he began seeing immigrant patients clinically in the fall of 2006 in the old Saint Agnes Hospital, formerly at 1930 S. Broad St, through a partnership with the Archdiocese, he and his team had since been working to find new

Check out our review of ‘Clinica de Migrantes’ on page 23 spaces to meet a growing demand. When Saint Agnes closed 2.5 years later, as word of the clinic and his work spread via word-of-mouth among patients and potential patients, Larson was able to convince a local clinic at the University of Pennsylvania to lend its facilities to Puentes two

nights a week. “We watched the number of patients grow from 5 to 10, from 10 to 100 and then from 100 to over 200,” Larson said. “The population kept growing exponentially in terms of the clinic, so we needed to expand the hours to meet the need. Holistically,

we’ve grown about 15 to 20 percent per year.” As a result, he and his team at the clinic have been working to continue to expand days of operation, and hope to someday obtain a larger, more accommodating facility. Although they are mostly forced to work nights at the clinic, because many of the volunteer base works during the day, it has since expanded hours to, by appointment and walk-in only, on Mondays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. He added the goal is to be open five days a week, but that this will take time to achieve. “Rather than wait for a diabetic to have a heart attack, or for things that require an increased amount of resources, we can do a heck of a lot of preventative care that’s in the public’s best interest,” Larson said. “We also want to further health-care education principally in children, because education is tied to socio-economics which is tied to health-care outcomes.” Thus, when Pozdorovkin approached him about his interest in making a documentary, Larson thought that ideally his work could help patch a human face to the patients, hoping to change the perception of some that immigrants are associated with crime. Larson stressed that this is not the case, and that there’s a real other side to this story in terms of human rights. Sharing their story through the lens of his camera, Pozdorovkin, an immigrant from Russia, said he learned of Puentes De Salud through a short article See HBO, page 23>>

CARDELLA: What dreams may go? <<Continued from page 1 (even though you might have to check your birth certificate to find out the identity of your country of origin because you were too young to remember where the hell it is). You are in the Trumpian version of Limbo (Limbo is the Christian way station for unbaptized infants who are waiting for a celestial congress to decide what to do with them). No, I do not know what heaven ever decided to do about unbaptized infants. In America parlance – which you no doubt understand because of the years you’ve lived here – you’re screwed. Maybe you play football for UCLA. Or you might have helped your neighbors in Houston during Hurricane Harvey. Or maybe you’re serving in our armed forces. Doesn’t matter. You’re still screwed. You may find it ironic or disquieting that the president spoke through Sessions, a man who just a month ago, was himself, in Trumpian Limbo. “Doghouse” is probably a better word. Perhaps you will be as lucky as Sessions to be rehabilitated into the president’s good graces during the next six months. The word “perhaps” is the operative phrase here. “Perhaps” as in perhaps is the operative phrase for most decisions under the Trump presidency. As in perhaps, Trump will survive the Russia investigation. Perhaps, we will go to war against North Korea. Perhaps Mexico will not pay for the damn wall after all. Perhaps Republicans won’t replace Obamacare. Perhaps, the debt ceiling will not be raised and America will become a nation of deadbeats. You can be excused if you are confused now about what will happen to you. I know President Trump has said in the past that he “loved” you and all the dreamers. Our president used to dream quite a bit himself – sometimes about a world

without the news media – before he calculated that tweeting in the middle of the night about crucial policy decisions or the ratings of “The Apprentice” is presidential. He and his Chief of Staff John Kelly have a difference of opinion on tweeting-asgovernance. President Trump also promised you a decision with “heart.” You may be forgiven if you are unable to detect in his recent decision what he meant by “heart.” The president is a man whom his admirers say is given to nuance, despite what his detractors such as myself say about him. His use of the word “heart” is an example of such nuance, they say. This heart that Mr. Trump speaks about has four of its arteries clogged with no chance of a quadruple bypass anytime soon. Supporters of President Trump would say to you, he IS giving you six months to make your travel plans back “home.” If you are depending on the Republican Congress to come to your rescue, you are likely somebody who believes Mexico is just kidding and that they will surely pay for the wall. This columnist has learned that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan will team up to provide you with informational videos about your “home” – the one you left when you were 6 months old. You will be reacquainted with its language and customs. And your money will be exchanged into pesos or whatever is the currency of your home country, with no fee. Assimilation, or should I say re-assimilation, should be a snap. And remember the big plus about your homeland is that it does not have a President Donald Trump. As it is, don’t let the door hit you on your way out. Don’t take another look at the Statue of Liberty. And don’t talk bad about us when you’re gone.

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

here is no doubt South Philly has hosted its share of hard-to-forget moments. Later this year, the South Philly Review will be taking readers on a trip back in time revisiting some of the greatest moments in South Philly’s storied history. Besides highlighting the famous 70 from these parts, the very special Nov. 28 70th anniversary edition will touch on 70 great events in South Philly history. Sure, the Phillies 2008 World Series parade down South Broad Street may immediately pop into your mind for the fact that those types of celebrations are a rarity in the City of Brotherly Love. Think about it, the previous championship caliber celebration took place in 1983 when the likes of Dr. J and Moses Malone led the 76ers to an NBA championship. But if we keep going down this championship path, the conversation will likely take a depressing turn. Besides, South Philly is known for much more than its professional sports teams. There’s the annual Mummers Parade on New Year’s Day that dates back to the days before anyone reading this paper was born. In terms of politics, the Wells Fargo Center, formerly the First Union Center, was home to the Republican National Convention in 2000, and more recently, last year’s Democratic National Convention. Others may recall the 1979 visit by Pope John Paul II that included residents lining up along Broad Street just for the opportunity to see the papal motorcade up close. Others may recall a little concert known as Live Aid that took place at the old JFK Stadium in 1985. There was some guy by the name of Frank Rizzo who was elected mayor of Philadelphia in 1972. Call this random list of events as the conversation starter. There is no doubt there will be a widerange of opinions on which events should make the cut, and which ones shouldn’t. Based on recent current events, many of you may give a thumbs down to the simple mention of Rizzo’s name. Calm down, this is not meant to be a shouting match. Share as many or as few events as you like, good or bad. All of them are considered part of our history. Keep an eye on our social media pages for random questions to get the history conversation going. Email your list of events to news@southphillyreview.com.

Wesleyan wants to become friends

Wesleyan came into the rescue with another dog in early September after they were left stranded together when their family moved without them. We suspect they are somehow related, but we are not sure how. Wesleyan is an approximately 5-year-old female Maltese/Terrier mix with a lovely singing voice. Wesleyan has loved all of the humans and has done well with the other dogs that she has met so far. She loves to be held and cuddled. She’s a calm sweetheart who deserves a great forever home. Teaching the ABC’s of charity Alphabet Academy to host coin drive for hurricane victims By Lindsey Nolen

LINDSEY NOLEN/South Philly Review

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

hortly after Hurricane Harvey caused record-breaking damage to Texas, Amanda Fischer, director of the Alphabet Academy, 1510 East Passyunk Ave., organized a coin drive to take place throughout all of her schools through Sept. 18. However, now that Hurricane Irma has followed suit, causing vast destruction in Florida as well, the school has extended its coin drive through Saturday, Sept. 30. Hoping to raise as many funds as possible, Fischer explained the schools’ collection will hopefully result in one large check donated to victims through the Red Cross. With four locations on East Passyunk Avenue, she is confident that together the approximately 200 students, staff members and parents can make a difference on the road to recovering from each storm’s disastrous effects. “We really wanted to do something for the victims that the kids could be directly involved in, rather than asking for

fore be a part of the collection. To make parents aware of this collection, the schools sent home letters to parents on Sept. 7, and started the coin drive fundraiser five days later. The initial letter also mentioned that, as students and staff begin the new school year, the school believes the most most valuable lesson to be taught is compassion and generosity. “Our goal is just to help the victims in some small way, and to help the kids understand a sense of community and giving back, Fischer said. “We’re not looking to meet a specific number or anything, but anything helps. She added that all donations, including change, dollars and checks from those community members with no direct ties to the schools are welcome. To donate, people are encouraged to swing by any of the school’s locations and contribute to the coin drives.

Authorities seek suspect in Citizens Bank heist

The Philadelphia Police Department Violent Crimes Task Force and the FBI are seeking the public’s assistance to identify and locate the subject responsible for the robbery on Tuesday, Sept. 19, of the Citizens Bank branch at 2540 S. 24th Street. Authorities say at approximately 10:18 a.m., the subject entered the bank, approached the counter and showed a demand note to a teller. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, she fled the area of the bank on foot, heading east on Porter and then north up the alley behind the U.S. Post Office on the 2400 block of S. 23rd Street. The subject is described as a black female in her mid to late 30s, approximately 5-feet-6 to 5-feet-8, medium build. She was wearing the black garb favored by some Muslim women, a green scarf covering her head, black gloves, and gold-framed dark

sunglasses. The subject carried a medium-sized navy blue purse with a brown strap. This subject is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information about this robbery or this subject is urged to call the FBI/PPD Violent Crimes Task Force at 215-418-4000. There is a reward for information leading to this subject’s capture; tipsters can remain anonymous.

‘Clinica de Migrantes’ a tough pill to swallow Documentary shows harsh truths for South Philly’s undocumented immigrants seeking treatment By Logan Krum

O

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

pening with muted shots of crowded and trash-laden streets, Maxim Pozdorovkin establishes a bleak view of South Philadelphia. The colors brighten as his documentary, “Clínca de Mingrantes,” introduces Puentes de Salud – a nonprofit medical organization that gives undocumented and uninsured immigrants medical care. The documentary was produced by HBO and will premiere Monday (Sept. 25). Director Pozdorovkin set out to put a human face behind undocumented immigrants, as he believes today they are stereotypically associated with criminalization. Puentes de Salud, 1700 South St., was founded in 2004 by a group of doctors in response to the growing Latino community. According to the clinic’s website, an estimated 30,000 reside in South Philadelphia. The clinic, run entirely by volunteers, provides a large variety of medical services to the undocumented and uninsured, so that they may seek treatment before going to the emergency room is required. With a run time coming short of 40 minutes, the documentary covers the history of the clinic up to present day. The subject matter makes for immediately sentimental viewing, though the short length is a detriment. What it succeeds at the most is showing how caring the doctors are for their patients – many are seen going above and beyond in their service. Dr. Steve Larson, one of the founders, is more or less the doc’s protagonist. The camera shows how much of his life he dedicates to the clinic — during an exam, he questions a patient about an unusual injury, making sure it is not the result of abuse. Outside the clinic, he tries (to mixed results) to enlist the help of nearby restaurants for financial help. With a topic as relevant and politically lavish as this, the doc does seem to leave questions unanswered and some stones unturned. Some clips seem to be included just introduce more faces benefitting from the clinic, but leaves their full story

Courtesy of HBO

Dr. Jack Ludmir talks with other medical professionals in a scene from the HBO documentary ‘Clinica de Migrantes’ that focuses on undocumented immigrant health care in South Philadelphia.

‘Clinica de Migrantes’ Debuts on Sept. 25 10-10:40 p.m. HBO The film will also be available on HBO Latino, HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and affiliate portals. untold. A lengthier play time would have hugely benefitted in humanizing the clinic by telling fuller stories of its doctors and patients. Which isn’t to say the more isolated clips aren’t effective — every scene of the doc contributes to its rejuvenating momentum. In one scene, a cry-

ing mother in a check-up room recalls performing physical labor through intense pain to give a better life to her son. “ ‘You go to work every day, even when you’re sick,’ ” she says, tearfully quoting her son. “If I didn’t have that, it would be all over.” Behind the camera, Pozdorovkin is cautious to interfere or ask questions, preferring to capture real events as they happen. The documentary concludes with exactly what it needed. A patient, diagnosed with cancer, is unable to get the care she needs at the clinic, and needs to visit a hospital near her hometown. The doctors help this patient (who came to Philadelphia alone to work and earn money for her children) with everything from food to travel arrangements.

HBO: Filmmaker says story is important to share

<<Continued from page 8 in The New York Times. Fascinated by the intersection of undocumented immigrants and health care and what it can explain about other issues and ethics doctors face, he saw this as an opportunity to portray that this population still remains an important part of the labor market. “Their not having access to health care is expressive of the general political situation, and ways

which the health-care system is failing itself,” Pozdorovkin said. To demonstrate this notion, he referenced a scene from the documentary where a man visits the clinic because he is going blind from diabetes. A nurse asks him what he does for a living, to which he responds that he chops melons for Walmart. “These people’s stories need to be told and they need to be represented, rather than forced to live in

the shadows,” Pozdorovkin said. “There’s a lot of immigrant stories about how they came over the border, not their day-to-day reality isn’t presented enough, and people don’t realize the extent to the labor we benefit from them.” For more information on Puentes De Salud, visit puentesdesalud.org. Additionally, to speak with someone at the clinic, email info@puentesdesalud. org or call 215-454-8000.

Driving the patient from the clinic, Larson asks her what she wants to eat. She requests a sandwich from Subway. Instead, he takes her to a restaurant she had mentioned to him a few weeks ago. It’s loving texture like this that gives the documentary its heart. Pozdorovkin is a documentary veteran – he directed 2013’s “Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer” and 2014’s “The Notorious Mr. Bout” about an international arms smuggler. All notably had at least double the screen time this documentary has. This is his second venture with HBO. With this installment, he studies medical care and the Latino community, but more prominently, optimism in humanity.

Eagles fans have fun, will travel New players like Carson Wentz and LeGarrette Blount have been impressed with fans on the road By Al Thompson SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

ake a poll of Eagles players who have been with the team for more than a year, and ask them … if they had to begin the season on the road, what stadium would be their choice? If it was a reporter asking, no doubt each player would want stay off the other team’s bulletin board and say they didn’t care, that they just have to worry about the game and the opponent. But privately I would have a hard time believing every veteran wouldn’t pick Washington. Because of a general distaste for Redskins owner Daniel Snyder, many season ticket owners offer up their tickets on various ticket purchasing sites and agencies. It is the easiest road ticket to get on the Eagles schedule at a fair price. Every year about 15,000 fans take the short trip to FedEx Stadium and make plenty of noise. In the week leading up to the game, offensive tackle Lane Johnson was asked about how well Eagles fans travel with the team, especially to D.C. No one really had to ask Johnson about that question. The fifth-year blocker knows his audience. Back in August, Johnson wrote a column for the players-only blog site theplayerstribune.com. In it he promised Eagles fans the team was going Washington, D.C. to “...whup some against the Redskins. We’re going to surprise some people.” The week before the game, Johnson doubled down on his comments and invited Eagles fans to join him. “I hope they go there and scream their a__ off,” said Johnson, making a sort of call-to-action aimed at Eagles Nation. “I bet they’ll be just as loud as their fans. It will be a battle, a battle on the field, a battle in the stands.” The Eagles defeated the Redskins 3017. The Eagles offensive and defensive lines were physical and Philadelphia was a force in the stands. They chanted “E-A-G-L-E-S...Eagles!” all afternoon and at the end of the fourth quarter, when defensive tackle Fletcher Cox scooped up a fumble by

Eagles fans are loud, passionate and ready to rock home or away. Redskins then-battered quarterback Kirk Cousins and ran it into the end zone, FedEx field sounded like the Linc. Johnson was asked if players hear the chants out on the field. “Yeah, especially in pregame,” Johnson said. “When I get in the game I really try and tone it all out. But in pregame, you can really hear them.” When Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was asked the first question of his postgame press conference, he pivoted right to the fans in the stadium. “Obviously a big win for us,” Wentz said. “You know, last year we struggled on the road. We couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to come down here, a divisional rival like this. I mean, it was so cool being out there. The Eagles fans showed up in amazing form.”

Free agent acquisition LeGarrette Blount, fresh off an 18-touchdown season where he helped the New England Patriots win a Super Bowl, was taken aback after seeing all the Eagles fans at the Redskins game. “We travel well,” he said. “Our fan base travels well. That’s a big thing for us. They drowned out all the Washington Redskins (fans). All I heard was Eagles cheers throughout the game and throughout the process.” He won’t have to worry about that. The Washington game is special every year because of the relatively short distance to the game and ticket availability, but Eagles fans travel in droves to every away game, including Dallas. A few days before the season opener, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie held an im-

promptu press gathering at the NovaCare Complex. During the half-hour session he was asked if he was still trying to host a Super Bowl at the Linc. Like most people in the area and around the country, Lurie was overwhelmed by the passion and spirit Eagles fans showed during the NFL draft held in Philadelphia for the first time and the first time it was held with the NFL Experience in full Super Bowl mode. Approximately 250,000 mostly Eagles fans packed Benjamin Franklin Parkway over three days and made what had been an underwhelming snooze fest every year, into one of the most entertaining offseason happenings in the history of the NFL. For Lurie, hosting the Super Bowl,

didn’t seem so super anymore. “Bidding for a Super Bowl? Yeah, I’d love to,” Lurie said. “I mean, I really want to get the draft again. We can talk about the draft. The draft was one huge Philly success. “Personally, it meant a lot to me,” Lurie continued. “I loved showcasing Philly across the country. I tell people wherever I go how incredible our fans are. There are fans of other teams, owners I’ve talked to about it. But they have their teams.” But really, you can see it in Lurie’s eyes, he is dying to bring a title to Philadelphia. And believe it or not, I don’t think he wants it so much for himself. He really wants it for these incredible fans who just can’t stay away from this team … their team ... home or away.

EAGLES INSIDER

Let’s hope home crowd can kick-start Eagles offense

M

aybe some home cooking will do the trick. Maybe playing at Lincoln Financial Field after two road games to open the regular season will cure what is ailing the Eagles’ running game, which has not been anything close to a strong point in the team’s 1-1 start. An offense that received a transfusion of talent in the offseason as the Eagles signed wide receivers Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith and running back LeGarrette Blount figured to be off and, well, running from the jump this season. Instead, the Eagles have been off-kilter in their run/pass ratio and have relied on quarterback Carson Wentz to carry things. He’s done his best, throwing 85 passes, with 640 yards and four touchdowns in the two games. But 85 passes is too many, and Wentz’s 61 rushing yards, while not conjuring memories of Randall Cunningham, are enough to lead the team.

And that’s not a good thing. “ We p r i d e ourselves on being able to run the football,” right tackle Lane Johnson said. “That’s something that every team needs in the NFL to win games. You have to be able to run the ball. We’re just having too many breakdowns. It’s never one guy. We’re not consistent. We know we need to be a whole lot better.” So how do they do that? There is no magic-wand solution here, and there aren’t any Pro Bowl running backs available for the asking. And, the truth is, it’s not just a matter of subbing out the running backs, because while the group as a total – Blount, Darren Sproles, Wendell Smallwood and Corey

Dave

Spadaro

Clement – aren’t putting up any substantive numbers, they aren’t getting help from the blocking execution. Maybe it’s a mindset. Maybe head coach Doug Pederson needs to commit his play-calling to running the football, which is easier said than done with the formidable run defenses of the New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers waiting. No doubt, though, that the Eagles need to be more physical up front and create some running lanes. In the backfield, the Eagles need to establish roles. Who is the go-to running back? Who gets the football when the Eagles have a lead with four minutes remaining in the game and a three-point lead? Blount was expected to be that back, but he went from 14 carries at Washington to zero at Kansas City. Sproles is a gamer and an all-time great, but he’s in his 13th season and not suited for such heavy duty. Smallwood, in his second season, has not yet taken the next step that everyone anticipated.

How about Clement, the rookie from Wisconsin who had such a strong preseason? “We’re going to get the running game going. I have a lot of confidence,” Wentz said. “It’s just taking some time. We’ve played two good defenses. We will get on track.” As soon as possible, please. Wentz

has taken some big hits in two games. He’s on the road to greatness, but the second-year quarterback shouldn’t have to shoulder so much of the burden. The Eagles need to run the football to make the playoffs. It’s that simple. The time is now to do the self-analysis and massage what needs to be fixed and get it right.
