y wife and I copped a couple of passes recently to take a tour of the new Mormon Temple at 17th and Vine streets. It was late afternoon Tom Cardella and the sun still shone with the intensity of summer. We peered upward at the granite structure that rises 200 feet in the air. The beautifully landscaped plaza sits on 1.6 acres of valuable Center City property. We were already in awe as we joined the long line of visitors. A reflecting pool glistened in the sun. In his illustrious, Barrymore Awardwinning career, Scott Greer has reveled in revealing the depth of his characters. His penchant for probing their humanity has met the perfect match through his opportunity to portray Frank Rizzo, with the resident of the 800 block of Federal Street and colleagues from the epony-
mous play about the polarizing politician having given a taste of the text to onlookers at Ninth and Montrose streets Sept. 15. “He is such an iconic figure and a huge piece of the fabric of this city’s history, the Passyunk Square dweller, who captured the South Philly Review’s Readers’ Choice Award for top actor/actress/ comedian in March, said of the former resident of the 2300 block of South
Rosewood Street. “There is no gray area in having an opinion on him. People either love or hate him, so it’s a real responsibility to create a portrayal that is full and complex and as big as the man himself. Greer and the South Philly-heavy cas ventured to the 9th Street Italian Market to offer the first scene from the work by Pennsport-situated playwright Bruce

itchell Bloom considers connecting with the can-do attitude common among his acting peers a tremendous triumph in his progression as a performer. Particularly fond of those whose ambition results in the creation of theatrical entities, the South of South resident has enjoyed the fortune of joining one such zealous set of confident thespians through Revolution Shakespeare, which is holding its third full production, the Bard’s “King John, in Hawthorne Park, 12th and Catharine streets. “I look at my colleagues, and it’s just an embarrassment of riches, the 28-year-old said from the green space, the host through Oct. 1 for the group’s FringeArts Festival entry. “To interact with them and to offer such an interesting play, especially as the election cycle unfolds, are two amazing gifts. Bloom is portraying Cardinal Pandulph, a figure, who, though he has taken a vow to help others, serves his needs with such abandon that one immediately ponders his ultimate allegiance. The man of the cloth lets his loyalty vacillate, including through his connection to the titular English sovereign, whose right to the throne comes into question. Handling the role of “a manipulative character, Bloom, who resides on the 2300 block of Catharine Street, enjoys conveying Pandulph’s inconstancy, dubbing it fun to play the villain. “He comes in and has this knack for shifting everything around, the actor said, connecting the presence of chess boards in Hawthorne Park to his character’s penchant for ordering monarchs around. “His interactions bring up the whole notion of who has power and what are the limits to its implementation. With the Nov. 8 general election only 47 days away, the 16th-century text has taken on added significance for Bloom and the South Phillyheavy company, including founder, artistic director, and Queen Village occupant Griffin Stanton-Amiesen, because it tackles leadership, its perils, and responsibility to self. Well-versed in addressing the vexing inquiry of why people should produce a given work, the former believes Shakespeare should continue to receive regard for how contemporary his canon is. “This is not a work that sees many stagings, and that’s a shame because

To the Editor: When will the endless shootings end? Two Philadelphia police officers were shot on Friday. In one of the shootings the alleged gunman fired at the officer 18 times, with two bullets hitting her vested gun. The other was hit in his hip and ankle Thank God they are alive. Then this lunatic continues shooting into a club hitting two, then shooting into a parked car hitting both occupants, killing one, a 25-year-old female. Then when the family is interviewed they said they called the police to have him committed, and they said they were told that he had to be a threat to himself or others. They could have taken him themselves if he needed help as they say. There are many treatment centers they could have taken him
to themselves. There was another shooting by some young punk on South Street because he and his friends were smoking pot and the officer called to them and he supposedly ran away. The officer gave chase, and he allegedly fired three shots. There are entirely too many assaults against Police throughout this year, two officers were shot in Fort Worth, Texas. New York officers were hit with a meat cleaver. In Atlantic City, an officer was shot getting out of his car during a robbery outside of Caesars casino. Young children getting shot, like that little girl in Camden, N.J. over a month ago, and no one knows a thing. Bull. Someone saw something. Everyone is afraid to open his/her mouths. I give credit to the pastor’s wife from North-

east Philadelphia for shooting the man who tried to rob them. And now we got the NFL doing their silent protests against police, especially on the weekend of 9/11 for all those lives that were lost and our first responders going into those buildings to save lives. That was a disgrace and a slap in the face to all our first responders and military that put their lives on the line everyday for us. The players could have waited until the second week. If these people were not out there trying to make this place safer, they wouldn’t be able to protest. Go over to Iraq, Pakistan, Russia and other countries, if you protest there, you are shot on the spot. I am proud of the police and the work they do to keep us safe. Hell, when I was younger when the Police told you to disperse and if they came around and you were still there they would put you in patrol car and take you to another district and make you walk back. We should publicly support our police by putting blue in our outside lights and blue ribbons or the blue line flag or sign. Mario Marchetti South Philadelphia

Attention, please To the Editor: I find it troublesome and disheartening that no candidate for the House, Senate, President or any other politician has found it necessary to address the plague and epidemic of drug use and abuse among the citizenry of this country. It proves they don’t have their ear on the pulse of America, and they simply don’t give a damn. / AC113AA4C: =>3@/B7=<( BVS 5W`O`R /QORS[WQ ;caWQ >`]U`O[ !$ E @Wb\S` Ab V]abSR ]\S ]T AObc`ROg¸a be] QWbg aWbcObSR =TÂż QS ]T 3[S`US\Qg ;O\OUS[S\b =^S`ObW]\ AVSZb3f aVSZbS`W\U SfS`QWaSa BVS Âż dS V]c` aSaaW]\ VOR d]Zc\bSS`a eV] `SQSWdSR S[S`US\Qg ^`S^O`SR\Saa 5= 0OUa ^]`b`OgW\U SdOQcSSa a] Oa b] bSab bVS ]TÂż QS¸a ^ZO\ O\R ]TTS` `SOZWabWQ aWbcObW]\a T]` ^O`bWQW^ObW\U `Sa^]\RS`a SPR

t around 10 p.m. Sept. 13, Angelo Colon, a cousin of chart-topping rapper Meek Mill, was standing on 18th Street and Snyder Avenue when the occupants of a burgundy vehicle shot at him and a friend, police said. One bullet struck the 21-year-old Colon in the head, with medical personnel pronouncing him dead at the scene. The other victim, a 27-year-old male, received transport to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where authorities listed him in critical but stable condition. Police announced Tuesday that the shooter escaped in a dark sedan and that surveillance footage could prove vital in securing an arrest. B`W^ZS aV]]bW\U A Point Breeze shooting injured three people, including a mother carrying her 10-month-old child. At approximately 4:35 p.m. Monday, shots rang out on the 1800 block of Wharton Street, with authorities saying they recovered 17 shell casings. A stray bullet hit the aforementioned female in her left arm, not far from her shoulder. She received transport to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, and was listed in stable condition. Police added that she was carrying her baby and concluded that the gunfire likely just missed striking the boy, who did not require medical attention. The incident also left an elderly woman, who, like the first complainant, received transport to the same facility where she was listed in stable condition, and a male suffering from leg wounds. Authorities stated they are conducting an inquiry to determine if the shooter was gunning for the injured man, who ended up listed in stable condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Chief inspector Scott Small said witnesses described the gun wielder as a black male wearing a dark hoodie and possibly escaping in a dark Ford F-150 pickup truck. block of South Street. He attempted to grab the attention of a few individuals, but one supposedly took off, running east on South Street and then north on South Darien Street, authorities said. They added that as the officer chased the 19-year-old into a driveway on the 500 block of South Darien Street that the suspect shot at him at least three times. Backup officers reportedly found the adolescent, whose name they had not revealed as of press time, hiding in a yard on the same block. They transported him to Methodist Hospital, where personnel treated him for a right ankle sprain resulting from his alleged scaling of fences to avoid capture.

9) South Philly Walk of Fame – OK, South Philly doesn’t exactly have the Alist talent like the one along Hollywood Boulevard, but there are certainly enough people who once called South Philly home deserving of induction into this shrine. One thing is for sure – it would not be difficult coming up with a list of worthy candidates (Avalon, Darren, Bishop, Anderson, Lanza ‌) who are long overdue for such an honor. Getting some of those handprints, though, is another story. 8) South Philly’s Got Talent: Who needs Simon Cowell, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum? The rising stars of South Philly would take advantage of this newly minted space to showcase their entertainment talents – singing, dancing or magic – before a local panel of judges with a chance to earn a one-night engagement at the Wells Fargo Center. 7) Take the ‘Que: The avenue’s dining scene has earned plenty of acclaim thanks to a constantly expanding list of international culinary offerings. It’s time for a celebrity chef to set up shop and join the booming foodie row.

here is plenty of buzz along the avenue these days. Some of it is good news (the recent openings of Sate Kampar and Perla) and some not so good, including the bankruptcy filing by celebrity chef Luke Palladino. Here’s the burning question: What could possibly fill the void at Palladino’s place at 1934 E. Passyunk Ave.? This is the gateway to South Philadelphia’s foodie row – one that has earned national acclaim. Enough with playing the waiting game. Here are 10 ideas of what to put at 1934 E. Passyunk Ave. 10) Open a beer garden: Seasonal pop-up beer gardens - fuggedaboutit! We are talking about an all-seasons place to meet up with the group before dinner. This would be a great place to sample local craft beers. Add live entertainment, and this could easily transform into the newest hot spot. Heat lamps will take care of that fall chill in the air.
Here’s a name: Guy’s Bar-B-Que Joint, where patrons could enjoy some mouthwatering Blue Ribbon chicken or championship Pork Butt. Imagine what the line would be like if Guy Fieri showed up to greet his fans? 6) The Jon Dorenbos House of Magic: Face it, now in his 14th season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Jon Dorenbos is eventually going to retire from the NFL and he will likely be focusing on his other talent that has earned national acclaim: magic. Yes, he’s a perfect fit for a residency on the Las Vegas Strip, but Philly is home. This intimate space is a perfect spot for a dinner theatre where guests can enjoy a great meal while being mesmerized by Dorenbos’ amazing tricks. Has anyone seen the five of spades? 5) Stephen Starr sighting: I’ve lost track of the number of times this restaurateur has been rumored to be opening a spot on the avenue or South Broad Street. Let’s start a new one: Starr has been seen around South Philly scouting out the former Palladino’s on Passyunk space. Well, not really, but it sounded good. 4) “Chopped: South Philly Editionâ€?: “Imagine if the Food Network decided to relocate its hit reality competition show in which contestants turn baskets of mystery ingredients into a three-course meal to Philadelphia. Except in this case, the show would be filmed in front of a live studio audience. Who wants to be a judge? 3) Beat Mamma Maria: Move over Bobby Flay, it’s time to put a fresh South Philly spin on a show in which others try to take down this superstar celebrity chef. There are so many great chefs on the avenue, but since opening in 1992, Mamma Maria continues to earn high culinary marks for her authentic dishes, including the hand rolled gnocchi. Do you think you have the skills to challenge this native of Abruzzi? Stay tuned for the casting call details. 2) Yo Cuz: Before Steve Martorano starting building his national restaurant empire, this former Grays Ferry resident started small by making sandwiches out of his house. His namesake establishment would be a perfect addition to the avenue scene. Besides enjoying his meatballs, which would likely become the talk of South Philly, the dining experience of watching “Casinoâ€? while listening to John Coltrane or Frank Sinatra would be unlike any other. Since this one will likely not come to fruition, make a reservation at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City. 1) Dash South Philly: It’s time to take a whole new approach by opening Philadelphia’s first DASH store – the contemporary boutique owned by Kourtney, KloĂŠ and Kim Kardashian. Good luck finding parking when this one opens, as the paparazzi will be waiting for Kim and Kayne to arrive. As a result, an E! network television crew will be seen hanging around town filming the latest spinoff to its hit reality series: “Keeping Up with the Kardashians on the Avenue.â€? and more than 150 others have been erected in the United States. In the Bible, Jesus commanded his flock to build temples (whether he envisioned that such temples could exceed the national wealth of a small nation is for others to speculate). I find the extravagance of the Mormon Temple a good argument for requiring organized religion to pay taxes. I don’t make that recommendation lightly or because of an anti-religion animus. Just my sense of rendering unto Caesar what Caesar can use for public purposes and lighten the load on the rest of us. While the Mormons do have churches, temples such as the one here in Philadelphia have been built for various purposes such as meetings, teaching sessions, and moments for quiet contemplation. However, Mormons also plan to hold weddings and baptisms in the temple. We were ushered into the Baptismal Room. Mormons believe that in order to qualify for the afterlife, one has to be baptized. Belief in the afterlife is a very important component of the Mormon Church. Practitioners believe that people marry for all eternity. Families are supposedly united in the afterlife. Many of us might not view such a circumstance as a positive. Who really wants to spend eternity watching Uncle Vito pick his nose at the dinner table? But it is the Mormon belief in baptizing the deceased that gets more of our attention. One can act to sponsor the baptism of a deceased family member and the ceremony held in the lovely Baptismal Room. The idea is that by baptizing those who had no opportunity when alive to be baptized, they can join you in the afterlife. If the deceased are bothered by not having been consulted in their baptism, no one has heard any complaints yet. A word about the Celestial Room is in order. It is here that materialism meets spiritualism head on. Mormons will come in silence here to contemplate their relationship with God. In the center of the room hangs the most magnificent chandelier one has ever seen. This room represents a human effort to honor the glory of heaven. Outside, the sun was setting over the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was as if we were being reminded that when it comes to sheer beauty, we humans have not found a way to one-up nature. Not even with the grandest of chandeliers. SPR

hough she loves living on the 800 block of Fitzwater Street because she can quickly walk to South Street, Maxine Latimer has always felt tense about the latter thoroughfare’s role in causing discord among pedestrians and drivers. Wishing that fewer cars would cover the expanse, the Bella Vista resident will have her wish from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday when the City of Philadelphia, through the Managing Director’s Office of Transportation & Infrastructure Systems, holds Philly Free Streets, an invitation to enjoy a nearly 10-mile expanse minus the presence of automobiles. “When I heard in August that [Mayor Jim] Kenney would be making this a reality, I thought it would be a huge step toward appreciating what our blocks can offer without the impediment of cars on them, Latimer said of the decision by Kenney, who will lead a mile-long power walk . “I think of cars as a necessary evil and clear space as an absolute treat, so this should be fun. The City had intended the occasion to run slightly more than seven miles but expanded the route thanks to what it dubbed “an overwhelming response from communities eager to promote the benefits of walking and biking. The impressive expanse will run from Front and South streets to the South Street Bridge, hit the Schuylkill River Trail, venture into West Fairmount Park, and continue on to Martin
Luther King Jr. Drive to the Falls Bridge. That huge chunk of South Philly turf greatly appeals to Latimer and boyfriend Byron Altasair, both health care workers. “Like Maxine said, you can’t escape cars, but it’s’ great to be a bit more active, the resident of the 1300 block of South Fifth Street said, touching on the Philly Free Streets website’s Frequently Asked Questions section, where one can learn that among large American cities, Philadelphia, sadly, has the highest rates of diabetes, hypertension, and premature cardiovascular death. “So what if people have to move their cars for a day. That’s not the proper movement to be concerned with anyway. In prohibiting parking and driving along the aforementioned stretches, with some exceptions explained through phillyfreestreets.com, the day’s overseers are hoping to highlight the impact that active transportation has on businesses, communities, the environment, and public health, with the expanded route set to “engage more neighborhoods and communities and make this event even more impactful, according to Deputy Managing Director Clarena I.W. Tolson, who stated Philly Free Street attendees will have a chance to earn rewards by completing challenges, participating in activities, or exploring the city through our scavenger hunt. While motorists, who can take solace in knowing the City will relax parking river to river from Locust Street to Washington Avenue and that zone parkers can go outside of their boundaries along the same perimeter, might find themselves miffed, those eschewing engines will spend five hours of bike riding lessons, boot camps, group rides and runs, interactive educational games, mural mazes, and music performances. “Think about the length of all of this, Altasair said of the South Street inclusion. “You’re going to want to take advantage of it all. If I were making a slogan, I’d say ‘Forget your keys, and move your knees.’ SPR Visit phillyfreestreets.com. The guides moved the crowd quickly with Disney World-like efficiency, even to the point of placing mandatory shoe coverings on our feet. The coverings, we learned, were for the most practical of purposes. They save wear and tear on the lushly carpeted covering of the interior floor of the temple. Certainly the kind of touch Mom would’ve liked. The most spectacular sights lay ahead. From the stunning accoutrements of the regal chandelier in what is called The Celestial Room to the tiniest detail of the well-matched tony fabric of the sofas and chairs in the temple’s countless rooms, the Mormon Temple is a place where taste and elegance rule. If one were going to represent the major religions of the world by furniture groupings, the Amish would be log-cabin simplicity at one end of the spectrum, and the Mormons would be French Provincial at the other end. The Mormons are said to tithe 10 percent of their income to their church. A nice portion of those offerings must’ve gone toward funding the temple. When we consider that unlike most beautiful structures in the world, the expense of building the Mormon Temple was at today’s prices, you get an idea of just how costly this entire project was. I have to admit that if I were the Mormons, I wouldn’t have allowed hordes of tourists placing their fannies on these chairs and sofas. Mom would’ve insisted on plastic slipcovers. The Mormon Temple was closed to the public two days after our visit before it was turned into the insides of a SEPTA bus littered with bags of Doritos and empty bottles of Pepsi. I sensed my wife’s fingers were itching to vacuum the carpet. Of course, the sheer extravagance of the Mormon Temple calls into question whether any religion should be spending so much on materialistic decoration. I’ve heard the same question raised about the Vatican (Mom wanted the Pope to melt the gold, sell the masterpieces, and buy macaroni for the poor). To be fair, it’s not as if Mormons, Catholics, and members of other organized religions don’t run charities on behalf of the underprivileged, but the debate remains valid. And the Mormon Temple is another reminder of that debate. One of the many Mormon guides addressed the question of why the temple

Graham. The creation, drawing inspiration from Sal Paolantonio’s book “Rizzo: The Last Big Man in Big City America, centers on the titular character’s 1991 run for the mayor’s office and finds Greer reprising the role that he played last fall when Theatre Exile, 1340 S. 13th St., premiered the play in Old City. Audiences so voraciously ate up the Rizzo narrative that founding artistic director Joe Canuso and producing artistic director Deborah Block, two more South Philly inhabitants, desired a remount and approached Philadelphia Theatre Co. (PTC) “We believe in the play, so we told them immediately that we would absolutely stage it, Sara Garonzik, the executive producing director for the Center City entity, said just before Greer et al took their places in front of the famous (and infamous, to many, judging by its frequent vandalization) mural of Rizzo. “It’s especially important that we’re presenting the work now since the presidential election is looming and people are looking at the legacies of local and federal leaders. PTC will hold previews of the work tomorrow through Sunday and Tuesday, with the run lasting from Sept. 28 through at least Oct. 16, as Garonzik expects an extension based on preliminary ticket sales figures. No matter if the powers that be add performances of the look at the Girard Estate native, who served as the Philadelphia Police Department’s commission from 1967 to ’71 and held the mayorship from ’72 to ’80, Graham believes that patrons will go way beyond the surface so as to comprehend Francis Lazarro Rizzo Sr.’s intense nature. “He’s a fascinating character, the scribe, whose “According to Goldman and “The Outgoing Tide have also received PTC stagings, said. “In conveying his importance to the cultural climate of Philadelphia, it was important for me to balance the stormy and turbulent times with laughter, and there is a sort of Greek chorus of Philadelphians, too, to give accounts of the period. Last year’s experience was incredible, so we’re hoping for similarly strong reactions. Graham finds himself especially blown away in being a part of such a

rapid remount, something that he said “almost never happens in this business. The uniqueness of the opportunity, which yielded rewritten portions, proves especially appealing to Garonzik and her peers. “This fits in perfectly with our mission, she said of the 42-year-old regional theater company’s desire to present “entertaining and imaginative contemporary theatre focused on the American experience. “We’re all confident that it’s going to look absolutely great on our stage. SETTING THE ACTION in ’91 stands as a solid choice, as that offers a quarter-century’s worth of reflections on Rizzo, who died that year on July 16 at the age of 70. A statue of the simultaneously revered and reviled individual has received additional attention lately and not as an exercise in art appreciation, with many backers saying it should remain outside the Municipal Services Building as a tribute to his commitment to law and order and plenty of detractors stating it lauds a racially insensitive and corrupt man and needs to go. Those variant stances have made the remount that much more interesting, with last week’s free peek in the Italian Market drawing ample applause. “It was a unique opportunity for us, Michele Gambino, the business manager for the 9th Street Business Association, said of hosting the gathering. “Talks began in June or July, and the result was this very well-done reading. Nearly three dozen people observed the introductory scene, with 10 times that many theatergoers expected to fill the Suzanne Roberts Theatre at Broad and Lombard streets. In the opener, Rizzo, who ran as a Republican after having served his mayoral terms as a Democrat, engages in discussions on how to attract voters, with the use of humility emerging as a possible component of the path to victory. A synopsis tabs Rizzo as “A big guy who left an even bigger impression, and Canuso, who will direct the show, will employ an amazing thespian to express the enormity. “I’m a transplant but also a proud Philadelphian, Greer, an Atlanta product, said upon completing his morning turn as the mayor. “I read Sal’s book upon moving here, so I had been very well aware of Rizzo’s status and stature before taking on this wonderfully well-

itchell Bloom considers connecting with the can-do attitude common among his acting peers a tremendous triumph in his progression as a performer. “This is not a work that sees many stagings, and that’s a shame because
B?<;IJOB;I there are so many good characters and such wonderful language, Bloom offered. “It makes so much sense for us to present this now because of our political climate’s instability and, frankly, because it’s quite compelling to bring Shakespeare to life. Early fall temperatures should make for a pleasant experience for viewers of the free performances, with Revolution Shakespeare acknowledging its connection to civic matters by making voter registration available. The outdoor setting and the political link aside, Bloom admires that their experience will further his fascination with Philadelphia as a theatrical powerhouse where opportunities are ripe and rife with wonder. “There are many chances to become involved, and I’m grateful for each one, especially with RevShakes, he said. “There’s so much else that I want to explore, and I believe the confidence and the conviction are there to make it all happen. WITH RESPECT TO his overall journey as a performer and an admirer of texts, one might consider Bloom a late bloomer, as he did not fully situate himself in the theater world until
N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [
his senior year of high school. He recalled playing Lysander in a third-grade production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream, an experience that bred a love for being in front of an audience, but art held more sway, with dance being another interest. “Come senior year, I wanted to be at it again, and ‘West Side Story’ was my chance, the Hollidaysburg product said of the Stephen Sondheim opus. “It was a lovely and wonderful means to broaden myself, but I didn’t think about pursuing acting that seriously. Entering Temple University with majors in English and history, he eventually let theater work its magic in his heart, and he nearly took enough courses to earn a minor in the discipline. Seeing this city as “a metropolitan location that wouldn’t reduce people to anonymity, he explored education through the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows initiative and landed a job through the Kimmel Center, with grant writing as a huge element of his two-year, Center City-based employment. Desiring more depth as an actor, he acquired his master’s degree from Villanova University, with seven shows in two years giving
him exactly what he needed. “I think performers thrive off affirmations that are not only self-fashioned, Bloom said of the effect that positive estimations of his efforts bred. “You can find great joy in having your voice listened to and respected. The giving individual has proven that sentiment beyond his acting aspirations through Philadelphia Young Playwrights, for whom, come next month, he has served as a development and communications associate for three years. That position has helped him to have a say in numerous projects and is set to align him with registrants at Delaplaine McDaniel School. “I’m eager to be in the classroom as an assistant teaching artist, Bloom said of his presence at the Point Breeze institution. “It’s always great to work in settings where you’re asking children to think creatively and to help them to understand that they have every right to be heard. That emphasis on personal growth, which Bloom will help to document through 20 podcast episodes, is akin to what he is seeking with his “King John affiliation, which is a terrific reminder of the power of the Fringe-
Arts Festival, which is overseeing 17 South Philly-based offerings; the wonders of Shakespeare, with a turn in Mauckingbird Theatre Co.’s “Much Ado About Nothing as his other opportunity to channel the playwright’s genius; and the thrill of matching wits with equally ambitious stage presences. As the run picks up momentum, he will continue to strengthen his bonds with fellow South Philadelphians and hopes that observers can give credence not only to public performances and Shakespeare’s potency but also to their roles in contributing to the creative climate. “What makes us human? What makes us strive? Bloom inquired. “Those are things this play will have you asking and answering, and your replies are particularly valid when you see yourself as being the owner of a very important voice. You don’t need to be a royal or a politician to have merit. Trust in that, and make your own sort of difference. SPR Visit revolutionshakespeare.org. Theresa’s Pasta Fagioli
T
oday marks the beginning of fall, and while we will likely have a few more occasions to wipe our brows, cold weather will definitely not forget to vex us as the season advances. While that thought might sound depressing, Theresa Strati welcomes the nutritional challenges that come with this time of year through her Pasta Fagioli submission. The Lower Moyamensung resident delivers a dynamic recipe sure to increase bean sales while decreasing worries over what to eat when earlier sunsets look to bring on the doldrums. If you are like Strati, when the temperature drops, you will rise to make this Italian staple.

Grubhouse’s Root Beer BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich
/
s anyone who has sampled the wares from his Lancaster-based Rita’s Water Ice location can attest, Jim Lord loves levity in his life as a businessman. Since March 2013, locals have let his lighthearted nature sate their appetites for great food and gregarious interactions through the proprietor’s operation of Grubhouse. “It’s a good time in Philadelphia for the food industry, so we’re thrilled to offer items of great value in a fun, casual environment, Lord said. “We know there are so many options out there, so we strive to better ourselves each day and be accessible to everyone who wants high-quality yet affordable meals. The 35-seat spot, formerly a luncheonette, finds the owner building on his lifelong interest in making lips smack. As his first nonchain endeavor, Grubhouse peddles “middle brow delights and has compelled Lord to look for involvement in civic association matters, particularly those of the West Passyunk Neighbors Association, whose Sept. 10 second annual SausageFest called on his culinary competence. Having hit his stride within the last year, he has grand ideas for the haven, including adding a bar, dinner hours, and more evening events, all ambitious aims given Grubhouse’s breakfast/lunch identity. “I think I know more than when we began, Lord said. “That means I have this constant desire to do things differently, and if that involves selling a lot of specials or making menu changes, I’ll do so to keep the momentum going. Many places don’t even make it this far, so I know the significance of respecting our customers and their tastes. Grubhouse has fetched considerable kudos for such creations as bacon cakes and Cap’n Crunch French toast, but Lord wanted to step away from the a.m. goodies and decided to offer the recipe for the destination’s Root Beer BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich ($8 at location, $9 online). “It is definitely a popular item, Lord proclaimed of the offering, the preparation for which is a three-person task that sees him handling the meat element. “I’ve loved making it for years. The process to make it is go-
ing to be so rewarding when you’ve finished the job because it’s so good.â€? INGREDIENTS FOR THE SAUCE: 1 cup of premium root beer 1 cup of ketchup Âź cup of fresh lemon juice Âź cup of orange juice 2 tablespoon of molasses 1 teaspoon of smoked paprika ½ teaspoon of ginger ½ teaspoon of garlic powder I N G R E D I E N T S F O R T H E C O L E S L AW : A small head of red cabbage, shredded 3 carrots, shredded Diced scallions Âź cup of olive oil Âź cup of apple cider vinegar 1 tablespoon of cumin 1 teaspoon of garlic powder 1 teaspoon of onion powder 1 teaspoon of white pepper 1 teaspoon of maple syrup DIRECTIONS FOR ALL: Rub the boneless pork shoulder with dry rub spices. Cook the meat in a covered pan in the oven (set at 190 degrees) or a Crock-Pot (set on low) for seven to 10 hours. Pour eight ounces of premium root beer in the pan or pot. Pull apart immediately after cooking, and let sit in natural juices. For the sauce, simmer all of the ingredients, and mix them. For the coleslaw, combine all of the ingredients, and mix them thoroughly. SautĂŠ the pork in the barbeque sauce, and serve on a brioche bun topped with the coleslaw. PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (never known to fail). O Most Beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, Fruitful Vine Splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O Star of the Sea, help me and show me here You are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech You from the bottom of my heart to succor my necessity (Make Request). There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Say this prayer for 3 consecutive days. Then you must publish it and it will be granted to you. M.T.
