Top Businessmen of South Philly

Getting down to business By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

was watching the semifinals of “America’s Got Talent” a couple weeks ago, and started thinking how each of the acts was amazing. I would hate being in Tyra Banks shoes (besides the fact that they would look rather silly on me) having to tell the performer that he or she is going home. It had nothing to do with being good or bad, but America had final say on which acts advanced. There is only one $1-million act. Putting together this week’s Top Businessmen of South Philly issue created a similar predicament – minus the lucrative prize – as there were hundreds of individuals worthy of consideration. We are talking about places that predate the South Philly Review, and we are on the senior circuit. No

matter who we picked, there would be no stopping the negative phone calls and emails with the “YOU MISSED ONE” subject line. Like the Top Businesswomen of South Philly, we welcome your feedback. No, we are not going to publish a follow-up edition in October, but consider this one the first of many more to come. We know the second time around will involve several hours debating who makes the cut. The great thing about this theme is that South Philly includes an endless list of names that are worthy of making the cut, and as long as there are businesses to talk about, readers can look forward to seeing these types of special editions on a regular basis. There are so many different types of businesses, we may even spin off the theme to focus on the medical and real estate professions. Like the Readers’ Choice Awards (returning in March), a small story in

South Philly Review has nothing to do with whether or not a business is successful. If customers keep coming back and telling friends and family how great your place is, that’s what counts. These profiles are the whipped cream and cherry on top of a banana split or other sundae of choice. Like a sundae, unless you’re ordering the kitchen sink, there is only so much room in the paper to spotlight business owners. With that in mind, it’s time to put the editorial spotlight on a group of extremely talented and successful businessmen. When you get to the end, feel free to make a list of who is deserving of this honor. They may have been missed the first time around, but 2018 is right around the corner. Have a name to share? Email news@ southphillyreview.com or call 215336-2500 ext. 121.

Check out our list of some South Philly’s business leaders on pages 8-12

Meet Victoria! This 14-year-old basset hound mix found her way to City of Elderly Love rescue after being seized by Humane Law Enforcement. We’re not sure what Victoria’s past was like, but we do know that she has an amazing personality regardless and that her future is bright! She gets along great with her foster siblings! We think she’ll need a little bit of time to adjust to her for-

ever home and that she’d be happiest in a quieter home where she can relax, go for walks with her family, and binge watch Netflix on the couch. Victoria has been sweet, gentle and appropriate with everyone she’s met including kids! To adopt this sweet girl, visit cityofelderlylove. org. Top Businessmen of South Philly Jason Douglas – Owner DanceAdelphia

Brian W. Donnelly – Owner Murphy, Ruffenach, Brian W. Donnelly Funeral Home

1100 Snyder Ave. Years in business: 62

What is the secret behind your success story? “My secret is simple: it was my grandmother, Mary Yanetti and my mother, AnnaMarie DiEgidio that made the studio successful for 31 years prior to my tenure as artistic director at DanceAdelphia. Their love and passion has brought forth in children a love for the art of dance that drives me every day to continue their legacy and with hopes, do so successfully. … I am blessed to be surrounded by wonderful people, some who have been with me here at the studio for years. Whether they stand proud as teachers, managers, assistants or production specialists, they each bring something special to the DanceAdelphia family. I am lucky to have the opportunity to share my days with my team and together, we have formed a unique, happy, and successful family, a family that values professionalism and a passion for the love of dance and education of our youth. I have learned that I am nothing without the love and support of my family and team members. As fond memories of the past fill my heart, I choose not to look back, but rather, to move forward toward a fruitful and successful future.” Location, location. Tell us a bit about the spot where your business is based. “DanceAdelphia is located at 1100 Snyder Avenue, in the heart of South Philadelphia. A closeknit community, we teach many children from the neighborhood, but also welcome all students from various neighborhoods as well. All are welcomed to join our DanceAdelphia family. A building is just a building, but the love that fills it is what matters most.” Look into a crystal ball. Tell us something exciting about the future of your business. “With each passing day, I never lose the excitement. The creativity witnessed here is rare, exceptional, inspiring. I have always opened my doors and my heart to others as my grandmother and mother have taught me. … As we continue to serve our customers the best we possibly can, we continue to enhance our vision. We want to maintain our current enrollment and continue to help it to grow. Many of our students from years ago now have children and grandchildren of their own and enroll them in DanceAdelphia in order to provide them with the same positive and loving experience they had here as students many years ago. We are honored to be Philadelphia’s longest running dance studio since 1956, a title we do not take lightly.”

2237 S. Third St. Years in business: Almost 125

What is the secret behind your success story? “Our funeral home has been serving the South Philadelphia area for almost 125 years as the Murphy, Ruffenach Funeral Home. The Donnelly family purchased the business in 2013 proudly changing the name to Murphy, Ruffenach, Brian W. Donnelly Funeral Home. We have made great progress since then and have great hopes and plans for the future of our business. “We provide our families with sensitive and caring services treating each family as our own. We offer after care counseling to all those grieving in our community and the surrounding neighborhoods. I have been in the funeral industry for 25 years and have made an indelible imprint in this industry. Being a funeral director has been my passion since a young boy attending St. Nicholas of Tolentine School. I have always wanted to help people and even though death is a sad point in people’s lives, I can say we truly excel in helping those that choose our services during these difficult moments.”

John Bucci – Owner John’s Roast Pork 14. E. Snyder Ave. Years in Business: 87 What is the secret behind your success story? “The secret behind my success is my family. My dad was the hardest working man I ever met. He was an animal. … It was a couple months before he died of lung cancer we were working one day. It was the end of the day, I was 25 years old, and wanted to get out to start the night. I mopped the floor and said, ‘dad, I’m going. He responded, ‘leave the mop there.’ I said, ‘why I did the floor?’ He calmly responded, ‘No, I have to do it the right way.” I immediately got the point! My Mom has ALWAYS been there for me. I am so blessed to still have her in my life. … We have been fortunate to receive so many accolades together, and I am so happy we achieved that together. (I just wish my dad was here. He never saw our business in print.)” Location, location. Tell us a bit about the spot where your business is based. “Our location was just by chance. My paternal grandfather emigrated to the U.S. around 1918 from Abruzzo, Italy, with a recipe for roast pork and meatballs and many other southern Italian dishes. He was one of the first caterers, but wanted a place to work every day. He came upon the spot we are on today, which was owned by B & O Railroad. We rented from them for about 50 years. We had a 30-day lease. (Real smart business, lol.) When my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer in 1987, I left college and started the long 18-month

process of buying the property. Railroads usually don’t sell their real estate, but they made an exception in our case because it was such a small property and we fed their employees.” Look into a crystal ball. Tell us something exciting about the future of your business. “Having survived Leukemia I try to take one day at a time. Just, trying to find peace, like us all. BTW, this June 6 will be the 10-year anniversary of my successful bone marrow transplant. We plan on having a big fundraiser at my shop.”

Location, location. Tell us a bit about the spot where your business is based. “Our funeral home is located in the heart of the Whitman area of South Philadelphia, which allows us to also offer services throughout the city and surrounding counties. The funeral home is warmly decorated and offers a comfortable home setting. We offer a spacious chapel, lounges and family gathering area where families can take a moment to gather and talk with friends in a more casual setting.”

Look into a crystal ball. Tell us something exciting about the future of your business. “We take great pride in helping veterans in their time of loss. I was named Civilian of the Year for 2017 by the Veterans Department and have worked in conjunction with them in regard to the “No Veteran left on a shelf” program. This program helps veterans who have died and have no family to provide burial for them. We make sure that each veteran has a dignified burial service.”

What is the secret behind your success story? “There is no secret! With any endeavor, hard work is the main ingredient for success. Notwithstanding, commitment, dedication along with having a goal and an objective. Having an ambitious partner like my wife, Faatimah, and a dedicated staff has enabled us to conceptualize an idea and bring the concept to fruition.”

What is the secret behind your success story? “I have been interested in Black liberation since early in life. It is what drives me today; understanding the struggle and issues in 1960s to deal with the struggle. I reference it is all that I do.”

Location, location. Tell us a little bit about the spot where your business is based. “Our business is located in the neighborhood in which I spent my youth. There have been an enormous amount of changes; however, despite the many changes, it’s still South Philly! It was a village then and it’s still a village made up with our family of schools, our students and our employees.”

What is the secret behind your success story? “Our great grandfather Giuseppe was so hardworking and passionate about great quality seafood, and he passed that down to the rest of the family. That’s definitely why we’ve been so successful – love for family and great seafood. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends have all worked in the store over the years, and the regular guests who enjoy our food feel like family to us too. My brother, sisters, and I grew up in and around the store, so family and good food has always been our driving force. We still have customers that say, ‘I remember when your father and mother ran the store.’ It’s great to see the same customers come back year after year. Hopefully their kids will say the same to our children.”

With the restaurant boom on Passyunk Avenue, it’s brought in more foodies, which has allowed us to try new prepared dishes and bring in some unique fresh seafood as well. Our family has been a

A taxing problem

o here is the conundrum in a nutshell (by the way, if you think “conundrum” has something to do with birth control, stop reading this column now and consult your favorite dictionary). A British friend of mine put it succinctly – “If you want our medical coverage in the States, you have to pay for it like we do.” And the problem is that you don’t want to pay for it. The problem, dear reader, is even greater. It’s not just that we don’t want to pay for better health care. We want ALL the perks the government can give us without paying for them. We want the benefits of socialism and the low taxes of conservatism. Our politicians, bless their insecure hearts, are spooked. They want to be re-elected, not ride the subway to a boring 9-to-5 job like most of us. So how do they satisfy that which is economically impossible to satisfy? They lie. Show me a politician who has told the voters the truth, that you can’t have benefits without paying for it, and I’ll show you an unemployed politician. Both Republicans and Democrats lie to survive (although some enjoy it more than others). Lying about taxes is the only truly non-partisan fact in America. Republicans believe that no tax increase can ever be justified. You want a Republican to have a heart attack, mention a tax increase. President George H. W. Bush once said, “Read my lips, no new taxes.” And then the recession hit and Bush 41 changed his mind. He lost re-election and currently resides in the deepest circle of the Republican version of Dante’s Inferno. The mixed signals sent out by voters are mirrored in the current debate over whether to raise the debt ceiling. Our government has already incurred the debt, but there is a debate over whether to pay the bills. Really? Republicans would like you to believe that if you cut taxes, revenues will increase. That bears repeating. Cut taxes – INCREASE the money coming into the government. And as a bonus, Santa will bring you some nice toys when he comes down your chimney on Christmas Eve. Despite the fact that their fanciful theory has been consistently disproven, many Republicans steadfastly cling to their belief. When pushed to the wall, some Republicans will admit that low taxes means cutting the safety net. But usually they explain it away by saying, it’s the other folks that need the safety net, not you who are hard-

working and pay your taxes. Praise be your selfreliance and work ethic. Be aware. The self-reliant among you likely will not be the direct beneficiary of a Republican tax cut. While you are worthy, you are not the most worthy. The most worthy are the wealthiest among us – better known in Republican circles as “the job creators.” If the wealthy keep more of their money, benefits will eventually trickle down to you. While you might think that sales of yachts go up when tax cuts go to the wealthy, in reality the affluent among us are staying up nights figuring out how to create jobs for you. It follows logically then, at least to Republicans, that the feds should get rid of the inheritance tax. In this way, the sons and daughters of the wealthy can continue the good works of their wealthy parents. Republicans like to call the inheritance tax, “the death tax.” Unless you have approximately $5 million lying around when you kick it, your heirs will not be affected by the federal inheritance tax. Republicans like to skip over this fact. Instead they conjure up visions of poor farmers not being able to hand over the land to their heirs who are eagerly waiting for the opportunity to milk the cows and tend to the sheep and pigs. If you point out these inequities to Republicans, they are likely to accuse you of waging class warfare. The Democrats are not immune to their own dishonesty when it comes to taxes. You might think that Democrats would argue that a strong safety net must be paid for by all of us. But scratch a Democratic proposal and you find that it will be paid for by the wealthiest 1 percent. The problem is that although the wealthiest 1 percent might pay less than their fair share, they are still only 1 percent of the country. You can argue, as progressive Democrats do in supporting Medicare for all, that eliminating the inefficiency of the old system will save money. The problem is that you’d probably have more luck waiting for Godot than waiting for efficiency to become the gold standard in government. Democrats also believe that they can save money by putting a scalpel to our defense budget in much the same way that Republicans want to slash the safety net. In fact, if we ever had a truly bi-partisan government with both Republicans and Democrats cutting their favorite areas of waste, we likely would have no federal budget at all (I can hear the anarchists among us cheering). Beware of the whiff of tax reform in the air. “Reform” means different things to both parties. The word “reform” in itself is fraught with meaning. “Reform” means to make changes in order to improve something. Have you ever heard of anyone back in the day going to reform school and coming out a better person?

SausageFest returns to Newbold this weekend By Bill Gelman SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

I

f you take a stroll along West Passyunk Avenue on Saturday between 15th Street and South Broad Street, there is a very good chance you will see people enjoying a variety of sausage offerings. No, it is not National Sausage Day. This gathering is strictly South Philly – outsiders are more than welcome to attend – as the Newbold Community Development Corporation is hosting its third annual South Philly SausageFest from noon to 8 p.m. The event is free to attend. “SausageFest has become a great event for the Newbold community, and we’re so excited to bring it back for a third year,” Newbold CDC president Tim Lidiak said. “This year’s festival will feature several new offerings – including Manatawny Still Works which will be teaming up with The Thirsty Soul’s Billy Hines, the New Orleans-inspired bar maestro, who will be serving up some delightful cocktails, including his famous Sucker Punch!” Neighborhood restaurants will be cooking up a variety of sausage-inspired dishes. Café y Chocolate, 2100 S. Norwood St., is serving chorizo tacos and burritos and chicken azado tacos. Maglio Sausage, 3632 S. 3rd St., will be selling hot and sweet Italian sausage and peppers; Mike’s BBQ, coming soon to 11th and Morris streets, will have mac & cheese Philly Phattie (sausage stuffed with mac & cheese), smoked brisket cheesesteak with onions and Cooper sharp wiz, and Mexican street corn with sour creamlime mayo, Cojita cheese and cayenne; South Philly Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., is preparing spicy Italian sausage and peppers and NoEvil Vegan Italian Sausage. The Station Bar & Grill, 1550 McKean St., will offer slow-cooked BBQ pork ribs, potato salad and

vegetable kabobs. Tap Room on 19th, 19th and Ritner streets, will be cooking up chorizo sandwiches with pineapple salsa and cilantro-lime crema. For those concerned about getting thirsty, the festival will also feature draft beer from eight Philly breweries, plus local cider and special offerings from Manatawny Still Works, 1603 E. Passyunk Ave. Brewery ARS, 1927-29 West Passyunk Ave., will have multiple selections to choose from, including Maple Hill, a lightly smoked sweet potato saison) along with two new releases. Point Breeze Brewing Co., 1225 S. 28th St., is serving up Point Breeze Pale Ale, Reed Street Rye IPA and Spiced IPA with cardamom and ginger. The Thirsty Soul, coming later this fall to 1551 W. Passyunk Ave., is preparing some of their much talked about Sucker Punch - Manatawny Still Works rum infused with cinnamon, agave and pineapple juice, as well as The Elder - Manatawny Still Works Keystone Whiskey, infused with elderberry flower, orange, agave and ginger ale. Beer tickets can be purchased in advance as well as at the event (four for $18, 10 for $35 or 18 for $54). This family-friendly event will include fun activities for children - face painting, crayon station, water sprayer - along with a full lineup of live music. The Blue Pharaohs will start things off at noon, followed by Shakey Lyman (1 p.m.), Sun Hat (2 p.m.), Firestorm, featuring KAND-D (3 p.m.), New Pony (4 p.m.), and The Whips (7 p.m.). Proceeds from the South Philly SausageFest will benefit and fund Newbold CDC’s Street Cleaning Program, which provides employment for 10 disabled Philadelphia residents. EAGLES INSIDER

Rookie kicker makes lasting impression in Eagles debut

O

K, so understand how Jake Elliott felt: He just had the greatest moment in his professional life, and he had no idea where he was. Well, he knew where he was: at Lincoln Financial Field, seconds removed from a life-best, and Eagles franchise-record, 61-yard field goal at the buzzer to beat the Giants 27-24, and Jake Elliott was a spinning top. “It was like being in a daze, Elliott said. It was like being part of history, although Elliott had, or now has, a real sense of what it all means. See, Elliott is a newbie to the Culture of The Philadelphia Eagles, and while his field goal Sunday two weeks into his Eagles career doesn’t necessarily rank among the top moments in Eagles history around here – the Miracles of the Meadowlands, the 4th-and-26, the NFC championship game moments – it was something special. And it was remarkably special for a kid, age 22, who was a member of the

‘I don’t want to look past these moments. I want to have many more of them.’ – Eagles kicker Jake Elliott

Dave

Bengals’ practice squad when Eagles placekicker Caleb Sturgis suffered a hip injury in the opening-day win over Washington and said “yes to the Eagles’ invitation to join the 53man active roster. “I just tried to go out there and focus on my job and make the best contact I could make on the football, said the 5-foot-9, 167-pound Elliott, who is as unassuming as unassuming can be for an NFL player. “I looked up, and it had a chance, and I just was hoping it would go through. I couldn’t even think.

Spadaro

Elliott then, in the hours to follow, did the media tour. Every television station wanted to hear Elliott’s story of having a terrific career at Memphis, and how he was a fifth-round draft pick of the Cincinnati Bengals last spring and how he lost the competition to win the job and was plucked off the Bengals’ practice squad when Sturgis was injured and how he got to this point. “Crazy trip, he said. “I just have to focus on the moment. The moment lasts for a couple of days in the NFL, and that’s it. By the time Sunday rolls around and the Eagles are in Los Angeles playing against

the Chargers and you are watching on television, you’re going to give Elliott exactly zero slack. When he lines up for his next field goal, he has to make it. In the NFL, you are only as good as your last play. Elliott knows to live in the moment. He just had a hard time figuring out a moment on Sunday that he had never before created. A game-winning kick from 61 yards away? For a rookie in

his first home game? That just doesn’t happen. “I’m trying not to think about it, Elliott said. This is what makes the NFL so great. To win games in the NFL, entire rosters have to shine. As the Eagles have gone 2-1 early in this 2017 season, they’ve gotten key contributions from all three phases of the game. In Los Angeles, an 0-3 Chargers team is playing for its season. This won’t be easy. And by the time Elliott makes his first kick, his 15 minutes of fame will be over. To last in the NFL, Elliott will have to deliver every week. He doesn’t want the high point of his career to have happened two weeks into a contract. “I want to be around in the NFL for a long time, Elliott said. “I don’t want to look past these moments. I want to have many more of them.

here are games you play, even as a pro, that stay with you forever. It is safe to say the players on both the winning and losing side of Sunday’s thrilling 27-24 Eagles victory over the New York Giants will stay with them for a long time, some forever. The game was decided on the final play, a 61-yard field goal by rookie kicker Jake Elliott, who just under two weeks ago was on the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad. Elliott hit back-to-back field goals of 46 and 61 yards in the last 51 seconds of the game to erase a 24-21 deficit. The former University of Memphis star said he remembers very little about the winning kick, the longest in franchise history. “It’s kind of all a blur to me,” Elliott said at a formal post-game news conference usually reserved for the head coach and quarterback. “I don’t really know; all I know is that the ball was in the air for a really long time and was real close to that right upright.” But it went through, and the Eagles are 2-1, 2-0 in the NFC East. The Giants are on life support at 0-3. Elliott’s 61-yard field goal is tied for the seventhlongest in NFL history, trailing only Matt Prater (64 yards on Dec. 8, 2013 vs. Tennessee), David Akers (63 yards on Sept. 9, 2012 at Green Bay), Sebastian Janikowski (63 yards on Sept. 12, 2011 at Denver), Jason Elam (63 yards on Oct. 25, 1998 vs. Jacksonville), Tom Dempsey (63 yards on Nov. 8, 1970 vs. Detroit) and Matt Bryant (62 yards on Oct. 22, 2006 vs. Philadelphia). It is also tied for the third-longest, last-play field goal in NFL history, behind Dempsey and Bryant. Elliott’s winning boot is also the longest ever by an NFL rookie, breaking the record of 60 set by the Rams’ Greg Zuerlein on Sept. 30, 2012 vs. Seattle. Elliott is on the Eagles roster because Caleb Sturgis suffered a hip injury week one against Washington and is out until midseason. Elliott’s time in a Philadelphia uniform has not been great. He missed a crucial 30yard attempt last week against Kansas City. Elliott was asked about his mindset after missing the kick last week and then missing a kick Sunday from 52 yards prior to the game-winner. “I kind of approach every miss the same way and every make the same way,” he said. “I just have a one- to two-minute rule. It’s something that I learned to do in high school. You miss a kick and you’ve got one minute to get over it and bounce back. You make a kick, enjoy it and bounce back. I don’t dwell on it for too long, but you know, it’s definitely one that I wanted back, and I’m glad I got another opportunity.” The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead on a LeGarrette Blount 1-yard run in the second quarter. The Birds made it 14-0 on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz to Zach Ertz. The Giants exploded out of their season-long scor-

Two were pass plays from Eli Manning to wide receiver Odell Beckham, Jr., who scored from the 10- and 4-yard line. Sterling Shepard and Manning teamed up on a 77yard catch and run pass play that made the score 21-14 with 7:12 left. Wentz answered with a four-play, 75-yard drive that ended with a 15-yard scoring run by rookie Corey Clement. From there, the teams traded field goals. The Giants scored on a 41-yard field goal by Aldrick Rosas. The drive stalled, in part, because of an idiotic five-yard delay of game penalty by guard John Jerry, who tried to hold up Eagles nose tackle Elijah Qualls from getting off the field on time by grabbing his arm right in front of the referee. After the Giants’ field goal, the Eagles offense engineered an eight-play 47-yard drive, setting up Elliott’s 46-yard field goal that tied the game 24-24. The Eagles depleted defense — missing defensive tackle Fletcher Cox and linebacker Jordan Hicks from injuries suffered in the first half — stopped Manning and Big Blue at their own 34-yard line, forcing the Giants to punt with 19 seconds left in the fourth. Normally reliable Brad Wing, though, shanked the punt, giving Wentz and the Eagles offense the ball at their own 38yard line with 13 ticks of the clock left. After an incomplete pass meant for Wendell Smallwood, Wentz hit Alshon Jeffery with a 19-yard sideline pass. When Jeffery got out of bounds, there was just one second left on the clock, setting up Elliott’s dra-

matic kick. Several players said they would not forget this game. “This might be the top one I’ll remember,” Clement said. “I thought my first college touchdown was going to be the top but I think this is the best one … when I got into the end zone, I truly blacked out. LG (LeGarrette Blount) was the first one over there. I don’t know how he got over there so fast to congratulate me but it was a good feeling to get one for the city and do something great for the organization and put something positive on film.” Clement said he thought about how important it was for him to step up when he got the chance. “I knew I had an opportunity to tie the game up,” Clement said. “Why not put it all on myself to get it in the end zone? I didn’t want to sell myself short. Once I got the ball, I didn’t take no for an answer.” Beau Allen said he would remember this game. It was his stuff that prevented the Giants from scoring inches from the goal line with 24 seconds left in the second quarter. Allen’s initial hit on the Giants offensive line set up Vinny Curry and Joe Walker to be able to stop Orleans Darkwa from getting into the end zone. “Yeah,” he said. “This was a huge grind for our defensive line. They (the Giants) had a great game plan coming to just to try and neutralize our line with a quick game. We played with three defensive tackles, so when the ball’s out that fast, it can get kind of frustrating. But I think we did a great job of just staying the course and getting the win.” Blount was asked if he’ll remember this win.

“Of course,” said Blount, who rushed 12 times for 67 yards and a touchdown. “This is my first year on this team so I’m going to remember everything. I love this game so there’s not much I don’t remember.” Blount talked about Elliott’s winning kick. “He’s got ice in his veins,” Blount said. “Not a lot of guys can do that. It takes a lot of guts. He bounced back in a major way, especially in the way we needed him to. That was big, we’re all happy he came through for us.” It was not a good memory for Wing. “It sucks,” said Wing, standing at his locker after the game. “I have to get my s**t together. I think there are some positives to draw from it and I’m looking forward to how we’re going to respond to this going forward.” It was a memorable day for the Eagles running game. After putting up poor numbers the first two weeks, the Birds rushed 39 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns. “That was our goal coming in this week after we got tired of not running it last week, especially when we really needed it,” Eagles tackle Lane Johnson said. “It was big and it was something that we worked hard on all week. We worked really hard at it, and it finally paid off. It’s good to see.” For Manning, this was memorable for the wrong reason. He was asked whether this is the most shocking regular season loss he has experienced. “Yeah, a tough one,’ said Manning, who was 35 of 47 for 366 yards, three TD passes, two interceptions and no sacks. “Tough one just because of the way we fought back and took the lead, and took it a couple times. Just the events at the end of the game. To lose that way is tough.” It was a good day for Wentz. He was 21 of 31 for 176 yards and a touchdown pass. He did not throw a pick but was sacked three times, but not in the second half. Wentz was happy for the Eagles’ NFC East record. “Getting to 2-0 in the division is huge,” he said. “Our No. 1 goal right now, which we’ve said in the offseason, is to win the division. Starting the season off 2-0 is huge, with one on the road and one at home. I can’t say enough about it, and it really puts us in a good situation going forward.” Elliott talked about if he allows himself to think beyond week-to-week, given that Sturgis is on injured reserve and could return: “Yeah, you never know,” the 5-foot-9, 167-pounder said. “I’m just kind of taking the opportunity for what it is. If I’m here after those eight weeks, that’s great. If not, I’m thankful for the opportunity. I’m just trying to do my job while I’m here.” If doing his job has many more finishes like Sunday, he’ll be here for a long time. Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @thompsoniii
