f you’ve ever been stuck behind a Philadelphia trash truck, you’ve witnessed an example of where the real power resides in the City of Philadelphia. Just ask the guy or gal who’s trying to get to work Tom Cardella on time. Or maybe ask the SEPTA bus driver who’s forced to wait as the driver of the Streets Department trash truck refuses to pull over to the side. It’s understood that in Philadelphia, you don’t mess with the trash collectors. You don’t ask why it is that trash is being collected during morning rush hour. That’s just the way it is. You don’t complain if while a worker is tossing one of your bags in the air, it misses the truck and trash spills all over your

ust how far can someone stretch a dream with only $6 to fuel it? That question must have been on the mind of Joey Vento when he opened Geno’s Steaks, 1219 S. Ninth St., in 1966. When the founder died five years ago, son Geno, ever reverent toward his paASS CARDELLA ^OUS ! ,, triarch’s tenacity, took over and has made the answer to that inquiry “As far as your talent will take you.â€? On Inside: Saturday, the second-generation proprietor will mark the landmark sandwich shop’s 50th anniversary through a carnival-themed event abounding in celebrity appearances and musical performances. “We’re thrilled to thank everyone for 50 fabulous years,â€? the businessman said Tuesday after fraternizing with morning consumers of his site’s cherished cheesesteaks. “We put our heart into everything we do here, and we know that without our customers, we’d be nothing. This is going to be our way to give back for all of the business we’ve had and the friendships we’ve made.â€? evity can prove lovely to convey, but when Ethan Lipkin steps on a stage, he prefers portraying complex, psychologically intense characters whose dispositions move audiences to ponder the navigation of their own dilemmas. Beginning tonight, the Pennsport resident will continue to contemplate how one contends with conflict by playing Frank, the husband of the titular character in the Irish Heritage Theatre’s production of “Molly Sweeney. “He is passionate about so many things, and that endows him with a bit of mania, the actor said of the Brian Friel creation. “Because of his enthusiasm for those pursuits, he leaves some casualties on the side of the road since he’s pretty much a mess. One such obsession concerns the restoration of his bride’s sight, which she has beenwithout since infancy. Seeking assistance from a formerly famous ophthalmologist, he

initiated their “plunge into an unknown frontier, per a promotional release, and gives numerous looks at his tenacity, especially since Friel has the speakers in the 22-year-old two-act play speak only through monologues. “Technically, it’s just crazy, and, structurally, it’s a bizarre play, Lipkin, who will deliver 13 solo addresses to patrons at the Walnut Street Theatre Studio 5, the first being four pages long, said of the work’s scope. “It’s such a nice piece of work, though, and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity because I have such great colleagues in Kirsten (Quinn) and Michael (Toner) to help me. As Molly’s “enthusiastic and adventurous groom, Lipkin finds himself bringing to life a character very much unlike him in that Frank, when teetering on the brink of selfawareness, shuts down the instances that could provide powerful insights. The actor wants instead to grow each day and to see the merit of each moment. “He needs something to focus on because he’s all over the place thanks to his interests, Lipkin said. “Without giving too much away, I can say that Molly’s blindness becomes that, so I’m definitely eager to channel his convictions and also his reservations. Knocking on Cardella’s door To the Editor: Tom Cardella’s piece on his visit to the opulent new Mormon Temple at 17th and Vine Streets (“Knocking on Heaven’s Door, Sept. 22) includes some glaring mistakes. Obviously, he needs refresher courses on the Bible and the United States Constitution. He writes that: “In the Bible, Jesus commanded his flock to build temples... In fact, no such commandment exists anywhere in the New Testament. There was only one Temple around in Jesus’ time, the Temple of Herod in Jerusalem. He did visit there and prayed. The Mormons use only Old Testament references to justify their many temples. And they pay for them by themselves. Tom’s “rendering unto Caesar idea of taxing organized religion for what

he calls the “extravagance of places of worship like the Mormon Temple is also totally invalid. The “free exercise clause of the First Amendment prohibits any taxation of religion, which I am sure Tom already knows. In plain English, it is wishful thinking, has no basis in law, and will never happen. While Tom credits organized religion with funding all kinds of charities, he thinks there is room for debate on this issue. Has he been paying any attention at all to the many church and parish school closings in Philadelphia alone due to strained budgets? Thank God for the Constitution! Gloria C. Endres South Philadelphia

wo days after brother-in-law Ronald Galati Sr. pleaded no contest to corrupt organization, theft, and similar charges in a high profile insurance-fraud case, Joseph Clark pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and conspiracy in matters that occurred in 2009 and ’10. The 59-year-old resident of the 2500 block of South Garnet Street entered his plea Sept. 9, with an investigation headed by Assistant District Attorney Dawn Holtz concluding that the Girard Estate inhabitant falsified accident claims so that Galati’s American Collision & Auto Center, 1930 S. 20th St., could benefit. In the first incident, Clark claimed that a deer struck Galati Sr.’s ’04 Land Rover on Route 322 in New Jersey Feb. 24, ’09. In the other, he stated that a rental car struck Ronald Galati Jr.’s 2008 Jaguar as the former drove it in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Broad Street and Pattison Avenue, May 16, ’10. Documentation states that Erie Insurance received the false claims, with paperwork stating that repair work occurred at American Collision. The younger Galati pleaded guilty to theft and related charges regarding the matters the same day as the court system received a plea from his father, who is serving federal prison time for trying to have his daughter’s then-boyfriend killed in Nov. ’13. Under his deal, Clark received five years of probation and must pay $12,000 in restitution. The plea deal notes the probation period can end after he has submitted the money.

epublican presidential candidate Donald Trump has spoken: he prefers Geno’s over Pat’s. He shared his vote of approval during last Thursday’s visit to the cheesesteak corner of the world. Just like on Nov. 8, some are siding with Trump while others prefer the alternative option. He made the South Philly appearance on his way to a rally in Delaware County. But Mr. Trump, our neighborhood has so much more to offer than a cheesesteak. Yes, it’s what we are known for, but if you were to come back, we would suggest setting aside a full day to tour the area and shake hands with potential voters. If you happen to squeeze in another visit prior to Election Day, here are 10 suggestions to put on the Trump to-do list. 10) Cheesesteak tour continued: Mr. Trump, to be fair, South Philly is much bigger than a two cheesesteak town. Yes, Geno’s and Pat’s may get all of the publicity, but we also suggest giving Tony Luke’s and Jim’s - the runners-up in the South Philly Review’s annual Readers’ Choice poll - a try. We would recommend others, but we are keeping things on a tight schedule. 9) Visit the SS United States: What was once considered the world’s fastest ocean liner has been rotting away for two decades at Pier 82. There have been a number of different suggestions over the years of what to do with this hunk of metal - from converting it into a multi-purpose waterfront complex to scrapping it. She may not be pretty to look at, but we thought you may an idea or two on how to make the SS United States great again. 8) Stroll the avenue: South Philly’s version of foodie row has earned national acclaim, but East Passyunk Avenue also happens to be a great place to take one a stroll and strike up a conversation with residents. If you are not filled up from those cheesesteaks, we could make a lunch suggestion or two. 7) Try a cannoli: Desserts, especially cannolis, are extremely popular, too. Some of these places have been around

for close to a century, so it’s hard to single one of them out. Maybe we will save this suggestion for another visit. 6) Murals: While touring through town, you will likely find your eyes wandering to the eye-catching murals of Sinatra, Rizzo and others located on the sides and back of buildings. We know, this may likely send you on a search for some prime real estate as to where to paint yours. 5) 9th Street Italian Market: There is no way you can leave town without stopping the nation’s oldest outdoor market. We are talking about an area that dates back to the mid-to-late 1880s when Antonio Palumbo, an Italian immigrant, opened a boarding house in the neighborhood for Italians. You could easily kill several hours doing some shopping, so use the time wisely. 4) Hold a rally along the South Broad Street median: Over the summer, when Hillary Clinton came through town for the Democratic National Convention, South Philadelphians were forced to remove their cars from the median along South Broad Street. To park or not to park on the median continues to be a heavily debated issue around here. While this topic will have no impact on the election, we figure it’s only fair that residents clear the street for your visit, too. 3) Attend a Philadelphia Eagles game: While you have been touring the country trying to get ahead in the polls, the Philadelphia Eagles have been one of the early surprises of the 2016 NFL season. Do you think Carson Wentz is the next great NFL quarterback? Will the Birds finally win their first Super Bowl title next year in Houston? Mr. Trump, South Philadelphia is listening. 2) Try a Tastykake: Mr. Trump, despite the common food theme in this column, you have our word that we are not trying to fatten you up prior to Election Day. Tastykakes are a Philadelphia institution, and the headquarters are located right here in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. Hey, while you are visiting the spacious grounds, you may get one of those crazy ideas to purchase some land to build another Trump National Golf Course. 1) A lunch meeting with Uncle Nunzio: Our award-winning columnist Tom Cardella, who has been writing for our paper for more than five decades, has a very opinionated Uncle when it comes to national issues. In a January column, the two played a game trying to guess what you were saying with the television volume turned off. You are going to have a tough time winning his vote though, as “Uncle says he never saw a man lie more easily except for his friend Vito, who has been cheating him at cards for more than 50 years. SPR

SUCH DEVOTION TO being diligent was not always a possession on which the respected leader could consistently rely. When he was growing up, “work seemed like a curse word to him, and he could not always fathom why his father, especially when outside of the shop, could go on and on about his business. “He was definitely a workaholic and someone who understood the value of sacrifices, the deceased founder’s only

child said of his creator. “All of us here, yours truly and the 30 workers I have, want to make him proud each day. A trip to the establishment’s website reveals that Joey Vento actualized his vision with “two boxes of steaks, a few hot dogs, and $6 in his pocket when he turned on the grills at 9th and Passyunk. It adds that neighboring sites predicted he would not last beyond six months, with his dedication, bred out of working in his own father’s steak shop in the ’40s, carrying the day, or, in this case, thousands of days. “I was a bit of a late starter, Geno said, noting that he became highly invested in the place’s success when he turned 17. “Over the years, our approaches differed somewhat because my dad was pretty much old school and I had a different mindset, but no matter what, the emphasis has always been and will always be on presenting everyone with great food options and a chance to feel like they’re a part of our family. Joey Vento died of a heart attack Aug. 23, 2011, a loss that intensified not only his son’s admiration for 45 years’ worth of sacrifices but also his belief that the business could be even more of a beacon through communal engagement. Confident in his ability as an owner, Geno Vento also loves to exude conviction as a charitable figure, with cancer and AIDS awareness and prevention programs being beneficiaries of his benevolence and Veterans First and Wounded Warriors,

among others, also profiting from his penchant for positivity. “What you give is what you receive, he said of his enthusiasm for engendering happiness, which includes letting five couples marry at his storefront. “I take nothing for granted because my worst day could be someone’s best day. Along with the commended fare, including roast pork sandwiches and french fries, that will be available, attendees will be able to inspect another point of pride through the military and police department patches that line the exterior wall. As reflections of his father’s respect for those who serve our country dutifully, they mean just as much to Gus Aberdeen as a cheesesteak with fried onions. “Geno’s a keeper, the former Delaware County police officer and present resident of the 1600 block of Wharton Street said. “He gets the importance of giving back in numerous ways, and that’s why I keep coming here. Saturday’s event, which will include an appearance from 1st District Councilman Mark Squilla, tunes from Tony Pace, Almost Angels, Savannah Jack, The Unexpected Boys, and Go Go Gadjet, hot tracks from DJ Perry, and numerous children’s activities, will go a long way to proving that like his store, Geno’s heart is open 24/7. “I believe the sky’s the limit, Vento said of his business, whose products could soon end up in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and New York City, said. “Here’s to at least another 50 years. SPR For more information, visit genossteaks.com. The free event will find the mastermind eager to continue to count the community at large as a companion, and he knows that his smile will receive a major workout. “I’m going to be so entertained just by seeing all the expressions of joy, the Penn’s Landing resident said of sustaining his immediate connection to Passyunk Square and beloved accord with visitors and admirers, including a who’s who list of famous diners, with the most recent being Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who stopped there Sept. 22. “We’re able to sustain our livelihood because of their patronage. A customer for 18 years, Carmen Cappello cannot wait to offer a handshake to his hero. “I’ve never engaged him in a conversation, just a couple pleasantries, but I hope Saturday will be the day, the resident of the 1300 block of South Eighth Street said in waiting to place his order for a late a.m. example of the gooey goodness that has helped Geno’s Steaks to reach 50. “He’s really been able to take what his father patiently built and make it even more of a treasure. I’m proud of him, and I hope he’s proud of himself. “I’ve heard flattering things over the years, and while those comments have been nice, I just see myself as someone who has the determination to do whatever will help our product to stand out, Vento said. “The biggest thing to us to quality, and that’s never going to change. I like to think outside of the box, so if an idea comes to mind that I think will help us to show our commitment to great service, I’m going to implement it.

articularly through his guitarist role within the Blackbird Society Orchestra, Richard Barnes has long lauded the legacy of Eddie Lang, finding the native of Seventh and Clymer streets an immense influence on the evolution of jazz. On Sunday, the admirer will continue to chronicle the clout that the fellow guitar wielder holds through an eponymous day of celebration at the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. “We are losing history every day, so I believe in keeping that era of music alive, the Delaware County resident said of his esteem for tunes from the 1920s and ’30s, which his 13-piece outfit plays across the Tri-state area. “For me and many others, Lang is such a connector to many of the greats, but if you ask many people who he is, you’ll receive stares. Barnes is beckoning various generations to appreciate the talents of the man born Salvatore Massaro through his sixth autumnal tribute. Lang, whose A-list affiliations included work with Hoagy Carmichael, Paul Whiteman, Lonnie Johnson and Bing Crosby, offers a classic “What might have been case, as he died at only 30 following a tonsillectomy. Enamored with his output for more than two decades, Barnes, whose colleagues will join him as the main act for the 1-4 p.m. occasion, which will benefit Musicopia and Dancing Classrooms Philly, sees Eddie Lang Day as a chance to find joy in the positivity of its namesake’s catalogue and to promote awareness of an all-too-often forgotten great. Eddie Lang Month may be a more fitting title, as Barnes and other supporters are counting down to an Oct. 23 South Philly-based event. This one will be a masterpiece — the unveiling of a 50-

foot mural at Seventh and Fitzwater streets. “I’ve had that kind of desire to immortalize him for a few years, Barnes, who just over a year ago made his pitch to Mural Arts Philadelphia executive director Jane Golden, said of being a man whose wish has come true. “That will be incredible, especially for community awareness, since maybe it will inspire people to learn something about history and to consider how the past can influence us.

THE FALL EVENT in Bella Vista will cap South Philly’s robust involvement in Mural Arts Month 2016: Roots and Risk, with the opening party set for 6 to 10 p.m. tomorrow at Snyder Avenue and Swanson Street. That heavy concentration of projects pleases Golden, the overseer of the nation’s largest public art program. “We pay keen attention to where we’re

working and love having a valued presence in such a rich and diverse part of the city, she said of her brainchild’s focus on stressing each section of Philadelphia as a unifier through art. “We must always be acutely aware that creativity can bind us, and we’re ecstatic to have so many talented artists bringing great ideas to life. Jared Bader has received the honor of depicting Lang, with Barnes saying his design “says so much and means to much. The unveiling of the endeavor and the showcasing of four pieces through Friday’s Murals at Swanson Walk gathering will team with Oct. 12’s 9th Street

Stock Exchange project within the 9th Street Italian Market; Oct. 14’s Philadelphia 76ers homage at 1207 S. Broad St.; Oct. 15’s South Philly Musicians Remix Block Party at 1532 S. Broad St.; and Oct. 20’s interactive What’s in Your Trash? with Trash Academy presentation to swell Mural Arts’ artworks tally to nearly 4,000 and Golden’s heart with pride. “We ask about the possible impact of ideas, and we’re blown away with the answers because they center on innovation, which is the driving force behind cities’ growth, she said. “Art is great for helping us to appreciate the beauty, magic, and hope that’s out there and within us. SPR For more information, visit kimmelcenter.org or muralarts.org.

street. That’s just the way it is. And don’t expect the trash collector who made the errant toss to pick up the trash that is now strewn all over your street. That’s just the way it is. If your trash doesn’t happen to get picked up because — well, who knows why, don’t complain because it’ll get you nowhere. That’s just the way it is in the City of Philadelphia. Mayors come. Mayors go. The fiefdom known as the Streets Department of Streets is forever. This last point needs to be understood if you’re just moving into this city with its wonderful parks, nationally historic sites, and hip restaurants. The Department of Streets is an impenetrable fortress when it comes to being responsive to its customers. Don’t expect much. Consider yourself lucky if your trash is picked up on the designated day. And if it isn’t, don’t bother to gripe because among the most fruitless tasks in life in this city is complaining about your trash pickup. You want an example of what’s likely to happen if you do complain? Glad you asked. Let’s just say it’s a fine morning, a summer one, specifically. No snow, just beautiful sunshine. It’s not a holiday either. It’s your designated day for trash pickup. You’ve dutifully placed your trash and recyclables at the curb. The recyclables get picked up even before you leave the house. Note: few, if any, problems occur in the collection of recyclables. You return home later that day and realize that this is not your lucky day at all. Trash has been collected from half of your neighborhood, but your trash and that from your neighbor at the end of the block still sit there. A gathering of very happy squirrels is holding a party at your trash bags. You get some new trash bags, collect the refuse that now litters the neighborhood, stare down the squirrels, and place your garbage in the new bags. You call 3-1-1. A word about 3-1-1, the brainchild of our former Mayor, Michael Nutter. There is a vulgar expression used to convey a lack of usefulness involving a bull and its mammaries that is not appropriate for a family newspaper. Use your imagination. That old saying applies to 3-1-1. Complain about your trash not being collected, and a pleasant person on the other end of the line

dutifully takes the information. He or she reports the problem to the Streets Department. The next day, your neighborhood trash remains uncollected on the sidewalk, visited only by the squirrels again. You repeat the process of collecting the litter and repackaging the perforated trash bags in yet another holder. You follow-up with 3-1-1. The pleasant person answering your call explains that trash can be collected up until 7 that night, but he or she will report your problem again to the Streets Department. For good measure, you call your councilperson - in this case, Kenyatta Johnson. One of his very pleasant staffers takes down your information and assures you he or she will get right on the problem. The day passes. The clock strikes 7 and there is no truck in sight. You repeat all of the above steps the next day. This time when you call 3-1-1, you are a bit less patient when the person receiving your call indicates that he or she will report your problem to the Streets Department. By this time, you have also called Johnson’s office and exchanged voice mails with the same staffer. That individual keeps leaving you messages as if it is the first time you called. You ask the 3-1-1 person why it is you can’t call the Streets Department directly. He replies that 3-11 is supposed to report the problem. But you’re not solving the problem, you reply as pleasantly as you can. Finally, he gives you the phone number for customer service at the Streets Department. Customer service turns out to be a voice mail asking you to leave a message. No one ever returns your call. In the meantime, the staffer at Johnson’s office has left you his number to call, but when you do so, that number turns out to be the narcotics hot line. It takes two business days for the Streets Department to respond to the failure to pick up your trash. The weekend has arrived. Your real hope is that the Streets Department will pick up your uncollected trash with its regular trash pickup. Your trash is picked up a week late. The squirrels are unhappy. SPR

evity can prove lovely to convey, but when Ethan Lipkin steps on a stage, he prefers portraying complex, psychologically intense characters whose dispositions move audiences to ponder the navigation of their own dilemmas.

B?<;IJOB;I think we’re all fascinating studies because of those internal battles, and I thrive off analyzing with how much gusto people try to figure out how to treat themselves and others. This play is, therefore, a great professional opportunity and a great personal invitation to keep looking for more from yourself. THE LONG ISLAND product began to seek more from himself very early on as a performer. With a firm affinity for playing characters, he came to enjoy the sense of escape that theatrical endeavors could offer and though initially drawn to the fun of the craft, he knew deeper lessons would appear for him to strive to master. “It’s easy to be playful and joke about acting as being a sort of mental illness because of the heavy emotional legwork that comes with conveying everything, Lipkin said of his vocation. “It does demand a certain amount of dedication to want to see something come of your efforts, and that often forces you to analyze just what you feel you can bring to this type of life. Through adding a Manhattan-based

wanted a new challenge and came to Philadelphia, following tim in Brooklyn, with both disciplines on the brain. “I thought ‘I could live here for a year,’ he quipped, having spent 16 years, all in South Philly, in the City of Brotherly Love. “I knew that Philadelphia had a great reputation and that there were so many people eager to put on great work. Fighting through times where he felt he had lost his connection to the craft of acting, he reaffirmed his dedication through renowned theater teacher Irene Baird, with her tutelage and increased belief helping him to tackle pages and plots with aplomb. “The whole idea of working on characters is more important than the quest to play certain characters, Lipkin, whose incredibly impressive credits include turns as Shakespeare heavyweights Falstaff and Macbeth, said of appreciating the art rather than the potential for glory. “There is always so much to learn and to gather from other actors that each role is a blessing. That’s definitely the vibe among us, too, with this show. “Molly Sweeney marks his second job

for the Irish Heritage Theatre, with last year’s “Juno and the Paycock by Sean O’Casey, in which he and Quinn also played a married couple, being his inaugural endeavor. Considering the entity a producer of really provocative works, he loves that he has been able to earn another occasion to further its focus on presenting emotionally-bare looks at life, which is a particularly admirable decision given that the theater is becoming Barrymore Awardeligible. “I’m looking forward to a great run, Lipkin, whose other employers include the Wilma Theater, New City Stage Co., and the South Philly-abundant Idiopathic Ridiculopathy Consortium, said of the show, which will continue through Oct. 15. “I’m that guy who wants to get better each time out there because no matter what anyone says, experience is the best teacher. SPR Visit irishheritagetheatre.org. drama coach while a high school student and by matriculating at Boston University, where he noted that he hit his stride as a committed conveyor of texts, the thespian started to place emphasis on “the honesty of acting and focused on shedding “a lot of preconceived stuff about how to deliver as a performer. His immersion yielded the realization that he likes layered, damaged, and conflicted character or “the grays, as he dubbed them. “There are plenty of good black and white characters out there, but I love the other folks, the one who make us debate who they truly are because I think they offer more insight into who we are and what lengths we’ll go to to understand our depth, Lipkin said. “Those are such compelling roles to put on because you know the writers had a fun time creating them, too. Though stages stood as great motivators, the performer pondered film seriously, too, seeing it as being capable of offering a tad more subtlety and nuance. As life progressed and he dealt with some patiencetesting personal matters, Lipkin, just as he had done when heading to Massachusetts,

Kathleen’s Spicy Stuffed Peppers

M

A full feeling

any of us possess the ability to become incredibly hungry when reading the ingredients to a recipe, imagining how they will mesh to produce a perfect meal or treat. If you find yourself rubbing your stomach and licking your lips when looking at the submission below, you will certainly want to start a fan club for Kathleen Valle. The longtime submitter from the 2600 block of Dudley Street knows that autumn’s soon-to-be-frigid winds need some nutritional opposition, so what better way to bite back against the bitter chills than with copious servings of her Spicy Stuffed Peppers? Fun to prepare and even more exciting to taste, this offering from the Grays Ferry occupant will surely change you from being a hungry reader to a content eater. SPR

to Sicily or the Calabria region of Italy. These two places are the only ones I know of where chefs and good home cooks add hot peppers to a sauce. Some warm bread with a spicy pesto came with the pasta. We also sampled some marvelous slightly salted butter that reminded me of the version I have enjoyed abroad. Swordfish is another Sicilian staple. It is also a tricky fish to cook. If you turn your back on it for just a second or two, it can turn into an overcooked mess. This version was just right. It was warm and cool and rare in the center. The fish was grilled and served in a rosemary foam with small sweet grape halves, crisp bits of celery and topped with black sesame seeds. Foams were all the rage 10 years ago. I thought they jumped the shark. But this one was bursting with flavor and became a bit rich as I stirred it with my fork. Dessert was OK. Patrons received a rectangle, about the size of a Lego, of olive oil cake with a tiny quenelle of pineapple sorbet. I thought the cake was a bit too sweet, but the sprinkling of pistachio nuts was inspiring. Portions are small. I think a growing lad would leave hungry. But during the week, guests can partake of the regular Little Fish blackboard menu. EntrĂŠe prices run in the $30s, which some may feel are too high for the neighborhood. Perhaps, but then again, Little Fish is BYOB. Three-and-a-half tips of the toque to Little Fish. SPR

s a young adult, Aaron Wagner wanted more out of life than what he felt his family’s business could offer, so he became a world traveler. Living in Hawaii when father Michael expressed a need for help, he returned to the East Coast and became yet another beacon for the Wagner clan’s connection to bagel sales. A day short of three weeks old, Fitzwater Street Philly Bagels has helped the 33-year-old to strengthen his lineage and bond with a receptive community. “I feel very fortunate and blessed to have the opportunity to serve this part of town,â€? the fifth-generation figure said from his South-ofSouth establishment. “A few years ago, this was probably the last thing I wanted to do, but a good cup of coffee and a good bagel can go a long way.â€? The Philly native grew up in Cherry Hill and resides in Queen Village above his brood’s South Street Philly Bagels operation, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary. Having found a need for more exposure, Wagner, also responsible for Chestnut Street Philly Bagels, long held South Philly as an appealing spot and believed the Fitzwater Street address would afford him moments to enjoy “neighborhoodyâ€? experiences. “We wanted to make everything warm and welcoming,â€? the proprietor said of the space. “In our short lifetime here, things have been going really well.â€? Wagner lauds his excursions for helping him to appreciate people more, and he has loved interacting with patrons, dubbing those Little Fish exchanges and quality food as crucial ele%"$ A AWfbV Ab ments for helming a customer service-based $% "## % business. forward to adding more faces to his memory. Over his years as a hawker of the goodies, Wagner has fetched numerous comments about his allegiance to tradition and is offering the recipe for something with established charm and novel allure, the latter coming through the spicy artichoke cream cheese. “I think we’ve worked out all the kinks and can work tirelessly toward rewarding people for their support of what we’re doing here, he said. “I think the Chicken Salad Deluxe is such a means for us to say ‘Hey, we’re pretty proud to make this available to you.’ I hope readers feel the same about it if they try to duplicate everything. INGREDIENTS: b] Qc^a ]T QV]^^SR QVWQYS\ AOZb O\R ^S^^S` b] bOabS [SRWc[ abOZY ]T QSZS`g QV]^^SR Qc^ ]T [Og]\\OWaS >ZOW\ Q`SO[ QVSSaS 5]Ob QVSSaS AOW\b :cQWTS` A^WQS A`W`OQVO >WQYZSR O`bWQV]YSa

DIRECTIONS: Boil the chicken for 30 to 45 minutes, making sure it is tender and white all the way through. Add it to the salt, pepper, celery, and mayonnaise to form the chicken salad. Mix the cheeses with the Saint Lucifer Spice, sriracha, and pickled artichokes. Apply these ingredients and the chicken salad components to a bagel of your choice, and top with the lettuce and tomatoes. SPR

hen it opened a number of years ago, Little Fish instantly became a magnet for fish lovers throughout the city. The small space had seating for about 22 guests, with a BYOB policy. The cranky chef cooked whatever he wanted, but the food was always delicious, and the use of seasonal ingredients was most important. Little Fish, located in Bella Vista, recently reopened after a much-needed face lift. The original white tile floor remains, but the walls are now painted a deep charcoal gray. Some pretty fish prints grace the walls. Simple blond wood butcher block tables and comfortable chairs finish the room. Little Fish has a five-course prix fixe dinner on Sunday ($38), and I was fortunate to snag the last table for two. I chose the twotop next to a large picture window. A white marble ledge was perfect for my wine bag, purse and water glass. We brought along a sauvignon blanc from France that I knew would pair well with fish. A handful of servers will take good care of customers, working in teams of two to keep 22 patrons happy. It was some of the best service I’ve experienced in many months. First course was hamachi, a mild fish from Hawaii I first sampled in 1994 when chef Sam Choy, the father of modern Hawaiian cuisine, hosted a dinner at the now shuttered Philadelphia Fish & Co. The dish was done sashimi style with bits of sweet apple, cucumber and topped with an apple glaze. It had a little bit of a kick, which I liked. The next course was sea urchin, which is popping up in restaurants throughout America. It has a mild flavor and silky texture that needs a bit of crispness in a composed dish, although I have enjoyed it straight. Some crisp rice along with soft scrambled egg did the trick. I also liked the use of tamari here. It brought a bit of pep to the sea urchin. The only non-fish dish was cavatelli prepared in a richly reduced spicy marinara sauce. I found the pasta too toothsome, but the sauce was the star of the dish. It was prepared with onions and long hot peppers. Local peppers are in season now. If I had to trace the origin of this dish, I would point

hen Riley Marciante met the Phillie Phanatic during the 2014 Christmas season, the then-3year-old found himself “beyond terrified, according to his mother, Shannon. Having grown far more versed in the mirth with which the mascot makes memories for fans, the now-5-year-old has become chummy with the Galapagos Islands product and last week captured the Phillies’ Fan of the Year commendation. “He used to be very, very shy, his matriarch said from their Marconi home. “Now, whenever he wears the costume, no matter the occasion, he’s just so at ease. The youngster has completed three turns as the Mini Phanatic, with Sept. 18, the day that his family held his birthday celebration at Citizens Bank Park being the most recent. The next day, the Marciantes, including father Bill and daughter/sister Alice, 2, learned Riley had emerged as the franchise’s victor in the inaugural Major League Baseball-sanctioned contest, beating out entrants from Boothwyn, Newtown and Pitman, N.J. “It was fun to get the word out, Bill said of social media outreach that helped his boy to pull away at the end. “We’re very excited, too, for Saturday, when the team is going to recognize him for his accomplishment. As his parents spoke of the honor, Riley proudly showed off a Phanatic doll and drawing, the latter being his own creation. Giving the toy a voice, he shifted back and forth between speaking his thoughts and allowing the Phanatic a say. “I really like being around him because he’s so much fun, the pre-kindergarten student at St. Monica Junior School said of the beloved figure, who debuted in 1978 and entered the Mascot Hall of Fame in 2005. “I like Riley, too, because he’s fun and likes to do stuff with me. THE

costume, which Shannon made, aside from the hat and the jersey, to one of last season’s games between the local nine and the Chicago Cubs. Because of his outfit, team personnel wondered if Riley would want to dance with the Phanatic, and thanks to some stupendous steps, the two began a friendship that the Marciantes treasure, noting that their son delightfully deems the Phanatic “my buddy. His interest in donning the outfit reached a high when he won last year’s East Passyunk Avenue Halloween costume competition and when he and the gregarious green hero fraternized in December for Citizens Bank Park’s Christmas tree lighting. “It’s definitely helped him to come out of initially wore his his shell and to have something that really

makes him enthused, Shannon said, with Riley quickly adding that he owns books and DVDs featuring the Phanatic. “I grew up going to The Vet to watch games, so I’ve been familiar with the franchise for most of my life, Bill added. “To have this become a part of our lives is truly amazing, so I’m very thankful for the hospitality the organization has shown to us. The club’s interest in including Riley in routines with the Phanatic came through a March e-mail. The Marciantes’ receptivity to the idea led to Riley’s involvement in this season’s Turkey Hill Kid’s Opening Night. “I was a little scared in the beginning, he said of the April game in which the Phils squared off against the Washington

Nationals. “I wasn’t scared at all, though, the other times. The Phanatic and fan reunited again in early July when the Phillies hosted the Kansas City Royals - the defending World Series champions. It happened to be the same night as the XFINITY Fireworks Show. On this occasion, Riley, riding the red four-wheeler he acquired for Christmas, had to adjust to a gear malfunction. Undaunted, the youth continued with his endeavor and helped the fans to enjoy a wonderful evening. “It changes the routine a bit, and everyone likes it, Shannon said. “People have said that he looks really cute. He’s almost like a celebrity when he’s walking around the park. His third chance to be on-field chums with the Phanatic transpired just ahead of his birthday, making the countdown to his big day that much more exciting for Riley and his loved ones. “Everyone made me feel very special, the precocious boy said as he proudly held his doll aloft. “I like going to the games and being around so many people. If all works out well, he will continue to charm fellow fanatics next season, with Riley, who has also shown off his agility through participation in the Healthy Kids Running Series at Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, likely to be even more limber and lively come next spring. “All of this has been so wonderful for us as a family, Bill said, laughing at the idea that perhaps Alice could one day follow in the footsteps of her big brother, who will receive a personalized jersey on Saturday. “It’s great to see so many memories unfold before our eyes, and I’m happy that he’s having such fun experiences at this age. “The Phillie Phanatic is the best, Riley bellowed to laughs from his parents. “I can’t wait until I see him again. SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com or ext. 124.
