pon going through an audition three years ago, Kenny Wittwer, hoping to secure employment as a Terror Behind the Walls worker, thought of the film “Monsters University and feared that he, like several candidates for the narrative’s scare program, would hear that he lacked the look to petrify patrons. When the opposite estimation came his way, he set out to sure up his shock appeal and has become a commended quickener of pulses, with the Eastern State Penitentiary enlisting him as the attraction manager for its Lock Down: The Uprising element. “I marvel at how amazingly fun it is to scare people, the 23-year-old said of his chief task for the historic prison’s annual homage to horror. “It’s really addicting to me, and I think of it as an art form and a crazy skill to master. The South-of-South occupant has revelled in rising through the ranks for the seasonal offering, with last

year marking his transition as an attraction manager for the infirmary component. With the powers that be conjuring a new iteration for Lock Down, Wittwer wanted to continue to energize the proceedings and loves having such a vast expanse in which to lead a team of more than two dozen fellow fear inducers. “It’s like having a big playground to manage, he said of fraternizing with the staff and the brave of heart as a zombie cyborg guard. “The job calls on us to be very athletic, and I have to say I’m always in the best shape during Terror season. That enduring physical rush and the mental might that his job helps to engender, particularly through the immediate recognition of how well his antics go over, have led him to dub his assignment as “gym and therapy. He loves giving thanks for the double endowment, which he will nurture through Nov. 5, and finds this year’s chores true tests of his ability to provoke. “Once you’re in your element, you can feel so much in control, Wittwer said of this year’s endeavors. “Knowing you can scare people multiple times is so rewarding, and I think Lock Down is great at helping us all to terrify and question everyone’s tolerance. Through the attraction, one of six in the ever-popular presentation, a force brings evil throughout the site, with Eastern State’s website noting that the performers are “agile, “ruthless, and “hungry for flesh. ‘Tis the

To the Editor: Since the presidential election is rapidly approaching, it is time for all of us to get serious about voting. Of course, the Clinton and Trump campaigns have been “entertaining, but the fate of our country is at stake. If you plan to protest the election and want to vote for a third party candidate or “write in a candidate’s name, do not do it. Now is not the time to make a political statement. If you recall, after the Presidential election of 2000, there was a major controversy about the results. However, Al Gore accepted the decision that was made after all of the votes were finally counted.

He stated that “this is about country, not party. Although the outcome was not in his favor, Mr. Gore graciously conceded to George W. Bush. The rest is history. As Americans, we are extremely proud of our democracy. We cherish our independence and freedom in the United States. When Mr. Trump denigrates and criticizes the election process as being “rigged before voting has taken place, he disrespects our country and its citizens. Nov. 8 will be upon us shortly. I strongly urge voters to consider all of the issues carefully. This election is not about a single issue, as some politicians will lead us to believe. It is certainly not about party

any longer when Republicans have denounced their own candidate because of his disgraceful conduct and platform. A bag full of thoughts To the Editor: Tom’s article titled “Trashed (Sept. 29) is so true. I drive eight hours a day mostly in Southwest Philadelphia and South Philadelphia. I can not even guess how many times I have been stuck behind a trash/recycle truck. Over the years, I have witnessed everything that Cardella wrote about and witnessed just about everything from workers throwing trash bags from a pavement, completely missing truck, bag splits, trash left on streets and they will not pick up debris. Numerous times I have confronted these workers and asked them if they were going to pick it up. Most workers have said the following to me: “We don’t have to pick it up. “Get back in your car. “You come and pick it up. There are many more things said to me, too numerous to mention, and some things not so pleasant. I have called the Streets Department, 311, and it has done no good at all. Perhaps the mayor and head of the Streets Department should ride together a few days a week in an unmarked vehicle and see with their own eyes what Cardella is talking about, or perhaps the mayor and head of the Streets Department just don’t care! Michael P Iacono South Philadelphia

“I’m eager to see my cousins and godkids in their costumes. It’s fun to see how much pride they take in dressing up and being different characters. Brianna Brown, Sixth Street and Snyder Avenue

A F.A.S.T. course on stroke awareness To the Editor: When I suffered a stroke at age 23, I didn’t realize that a stroke could happen to me. After losing consciousness, experiencing facial droop and then having difficulty completing my thoughts, a good friend immediately took me to the hospital. If she hadn’t insisted that I go right away, I may not have been able to get help in time. It’s frightening that many people don’t know the signs of a stroke or decide to delay calling 911 when they spot the telltale signs. Whether you’re in denial or you feel you are “too busy to call for help, no excuse is worth risking your life. I want people to know that every second counts during a stroke and stroke is treatable if you get help FAST. If you spot the signs of stroke in yourself or someone else, call 911 immediately. No excuses. I’m joining together with the American Stroke Association for World Stroke Day on Oct. 29 to raise awareness for the warning signs of stroke and what to do. I hope you’ll join us in learning and sharing the simple acronym F.A.S.T. for stroke: If you see (F)ace drooping, (A)rm weakness, or (S)peech difficulty, it’s (T) ime to call 9-1-1. I was saved because my friend insisted that I get help and I was able to get treatment in time. Please learn F.A.S.T. in case someone, someday needs you to do the same. Aimee Minarich Volunteer, American Stroke Association Newfield, NJ Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“I love the spookiness of the night. The guesswork and the anonymity that come with dressing up are great, too. Of course, you can’t leave out candy! Edward Ford, 900 block of Morris Street

n Tuesday, the Philadelphia Police Department announced it has charged Mehdi Fraiji, of the 900 block of South 15th Street, with aggravated assault, attempted murder, firearms violations, robbery and related offenses for the Oct. 20 incident in Rittenhouse Square. The 17-year-old, whom authorities are charging as an adult, turned himself in at the Central Detective Division Saturday. The department stated that Fraiji and an unidentified and at-large conspirator attempted to rob a man and a woman near 19th and Walnut streets at approximately 9:30 p.m., with authorities stating that the local boy knew the duo. They added that a water-peddling cyclist tried to intervene only to end up suffering five gunshot wounds to his shoulder and stomach. As of press time, the department had not revealed if the victim remained at Hahnemann University Hospital, where personnel had listed him in stable condition. The complainants stated Fraiji, whose nickname they gave to police, and his reported accomplice fled without anything and raced in the direction of 19th and Walnut streets. On Oct. 19, authorities executed a search warrant on his house. He had not posted his $250,000 bail as of press time and awaits a Nov. 10 preliminary hearing.

several clothing items inside a backpack, with the female taking multiple boxes of headphones as well as she left, while the accomplice occupied a worker. The employee confronted the duo outside and immediately had pepper spray shot at her face, which the female also punched before she and the man fled in an unknown direction.

3\b`g RS\WSR Police arrested a minor for allegedly assaulting a would-be passenger on the Broad Street Subway. The complainant was walking toward the subway stop at Broad and Tasker streets 11:45 a.m. Sept. 29 when an unknown figure accosted him on the 1700 block of South Rosewood Street, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Pushing his prey into a gate, the offender pointed a silver revolver at him and barked “Don’t scream, and give me everything. Parting with cash and an iPhone 7, the victim saw the teenager head northbound on the same block and then westbound on Broad Street and Castle Avenue. Surveillance footage helped authorities to prepare a photo array for the complainant, who on Oct. 12 positively identified his supposed attacker. Two days later, police detained the minor. pon going through an audition three years ago, Kenny Wittwer, hoping to secure employment as a Terror Behind the Walls worker, thought of the film “Monsters University and feared that he, like several candidates for the narrative’s scare program, would hear that he lacked the look to petrify patrons.

‘Tis the

B?<;IJOB;I season to be scary, so Wittwer will stop at nothing to encourage his contingent to bring about sleepless nights and urges to return. “It’s just so much fun to create characters, he said of their careful consideration of what will cause the most piercing screams. “That attention-seeking part of me really finds satisfaction in this line of work, and I certainly enjoy being among so many people who likewise enjoy taking the things that go bump in the night and amplifying their reach. WITTWER HAS LONG been accustomed to securing reactions to his creative endeavors, having made music his most endearing passion. The Folcroft native gravitated toward the trumpet initially and subsequently forged a deep interest in 1980s synth pop tunes, with video game music also a source of enthusiasm. Seeking an additional means to channel his artistic impulses, he acted on an interest in acting that came in part due to the success of brother Patrick. “I watched a ton of television, too, and because of that and what I saw from him, I began to think about how fun acting could

be, the young man, who came of age in Swedesboro, said of his second yet nonetheless powerful pursuit. “I started to ponder the release of real and raw emotional energy thanks to acting, and I loved thinking about how the right use of it could make characters more believable. Validation came early thanks to friends and teachers, and Wittwer, wanting more engrossing means to address his place in the world and to explore his curiosity for cultural influences, decided to test his “big picture views by studying writing and publishing, psychology, and sociology at Drexel University. Switching to Temple University and reducing his concentration to sociology, he credits eye-opening course work for giving him a better grasp of numerous topics, including how influential one’s youth and early adulthood can be. “That’s part of what made my time at The Franklin Institute so thrilling, he said of his recently ended six-year stint with the educational titan, for whom he served as a discovery camp counselor and facilitator, curriculum assistant, and museum educator, among other titles. “It’s always great to see people getting excited over acquiring

knowledge, and I can tell you that it never bores me either to make a new realization or find myself impressionable because of some intriguing line of thinking. Such a school of thought led to his Terror Behind the Walls audition, with Franklin Institute contemporaries having told him of their enjoyment as hires. Always a fan of Halloween yet never a devotee of its ultra frightening possibilities, he had the aforementioned moment of doubt when presenting parts of his skillset, but fast forward three years, and one would think he went before the evaluators as the picture of calm. “We all love what we do because we wouldn’t come back each year to scare the pants off people, Wittwer said with a nod to the scores of individuals who have helped Terror Behind the Walls to gain national acclaim. “I feel very much at home when around them. South-of-South’s environs have also proven quite calming, as he is nearing the end of his third month as a South Philly resident. Clean, quiet, and conducive to his penchant for bicycling, the expanse is already a tremendous influence on his state of mind, so even when Terror Behind the Walls ceases,

he knows he can rely on the neighborhood to provide therapeutic benefits. Eager to write the next chapter of his life, Wittwer is looking for employment with a social justice-oriented nonprofit and is hoping for more exposure for his music enthusiasm, with two videos for his “escapist instrumental work, with nods to late-’80s and early-’90s synth pop, set to drop soon. “It’s all about finding the right formula to make your dreams come to life, Wittwer said of his aspirations. “I’m all about doing what I can to bring stuff to life. No pun intended, but I don’t ever wish to be someone who scares easily. A>@ Event: BS``]` 0SVW\R bVS EOZZa Date: BV`]cUV <]d # Where: 3OabS`\ AbObS >S\WbS\bWO`g % 4OW`[]c\b /dS # !$ !! City of Brewerly Love New craft creations planting roots in the city.

De h[i[hlWj_edi h[gk_h[Z just $6,597. But that was enough to put them over the hump and begin producing on a very small one-barrel system that can brew two kegs of beer at a time. The ďŹ rst brews should be on tap by Jan. 1 in local bars, including Madira Bar & Grill (1252 S. 21st St.), a hidden gem with a surprising bottle selection, smack in the middle of Point Breeze. Its agship is Point Breeze Pale Ale, but look for specialities including a lime-avored hefeweizen and a cardamom-spiced IPA.

Brewery Ars The third of the southern newbies is Brewery Ars (1927 W. Passyunk Avenue). Set in another garage-like space squeezed amid the avenue’s rowhomes, it’ll include a small cafe-style tasting room with munchies from food trucks. The brewhouse is surprising large for the space—10 barrels with a halfdozen fermentation tanks, which is likely big enough to eventually provide beer to area bars. The brewery is the work of the Arsenault twins, Sean and Andy, who have been ďŹ xtures in local homebrewing circles for years. Expect them to open in mid-November with hop-forward saisons, among other styles.

Second District

This one’s completely under the radar: A brewpub startup from the folks who brought you South Philly Tap Room (1509 Mifin Street). Located nearby on Bancroft Street, the pub will seat about 100 and serve a limited menu from behind the bar. I’ve seen interior shots of the place, and it looks casual, comfortable and tavernlike. The brewer is Ben Potts, formerly of Dock Street and DogďŹ sh Head. Second District is slated to open mid-November.

Point Breeze Brewing Point Breeze will send most of its beer to local bars—partly because its garagelike digs at 28th and Oakford streets in Grays Ferry are pretty tiny. It’s barely 500 square feet—about enough room to squeeze in a couple Cadillac Escalades. The partners, led by head brewer Kristen Nichelson, partly funded themselves with a Kickstarter campaign that raised

The massive plant that once brewed Schmidt’s, the iconic Philly beer of yesteryear, is long gone, replaced by Schmidt’s Commons, a condo and commercial space on Second Street below Girard Avenue. Fittingly, one of the restaurants, the former King’s Oak, will be replaced next year by this new brewpub. Operated by the folks behind Landmark Americana Tap & Grill (University City, City Avenue, et al), the pub will serve wood-ďŹ red pizza, mussels, pressed sandwiches, salads and small plates. The brewhouse can make sevenbarrel batches, a fairly typical size for a brewpub. I don’t have many details on the beer itself, but the group has been testing batches of IPA and an imperial stout that have been getting good reviews.

MoJo’s Pop Co.’s Salted Caramel, Pretzel, and Peanut MoJo Bar

BS and NBC fared quite well in promoting patriarchal wisdom in airing “Father Knows Best from 1954 to ’60, but based on her experience, Maigan Lennon would likely lobby for lauding moms and dads equally. Thanks to input from parents Steve and Maureen Namiotka, the latter being her co-proprietor, she last year overcame fears of opening a business by establishing MoJo’s Pop Co. and has gladly touted her creators’ insights in acquiring regard among her clientele. “I’d never run a site before, but that’s true, at one point, for everyone with aspirations, the 30-year-old said from the Pennsport location. “If you keep your mind on your tasks, though, everything becomes much easier. Lennon, who lives in the neighborhood, loves the burgeoning connections that the location has helped her to make with fellow residents. The space serves as “the icing on the cake for the ladies, as it complements travel opportunities to peddle their toffee corn products. With roots in Maureen’s home-based popping prowess and Maigan’s pastry chef background, the Friday-Sunday operation calls on a non-GMO commodity from Lancaster County to satisfy cravings and does so with “All Natural. Gluten Free. Made with Love. as its motto. “Retail can be tough, Lennon said of deciding to helm a weekend destination. “However, we’ve done well here because the products have such flavor and people love the variety. The alumnus of Johnson & Wales University’s North Carolina campus noted that production of the goodies occurs in the store almost every day and that each moment within its walls finds her focusing on how to be constantly creative, a desire that will grow come December when she will welcome her first child. That urge to forge novelty comes through courtesy of numerous options, including bacon bourbon and pumpkin spice pecan popcorn. For this publication, Lennon chose to share the recipe for her space’s Salted Caramel, Pretzel, and Peanut MoJo Bar. “I’m thinking it’s going to be a limited time item, she said, assuring its availability for Halloween weekend. “... Maybe we’ll let it be an option throughout the holiday

season. Regardless of that, I hope readers will want to try it because the combination of flavors is so amazingly good.

DIRECTIONS: Spray a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray, and set aside. In a large bowl, toss the popcorn, peanuts and pretzels, and set aside. Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Bring to a boil, and boil without stirring until the caramel is amber in color. Meanwhile, heat the heavy cream until warm. Remove the caramel from the heat, and slowly pour in the warm heavy cream. Stir in the salt. Add the marshmallows to the caramel, and stir until melted. Pour the marshmallow-caramel mixture over the popcorn, peanuts, and pretzels, and stir to combine with a rubber spatula. Pour the mixture into your prepared pan, and press down with a piece of wax paper sprayed with cooking spray. Cool completely, and then cut into squares. Melt semi-sweet or milk chocolate chips (or both) over a water bath or in microwave (slowly, in increments of 10 to 15 seconds and stirring after each time). Drizzle the melted chocolate over the bars. A>@

et ready for an explosion of new breweries in Philadelphia. Not the suburbs or Jersey, where the bulk of the region’s beermaking growth has occurred in the past two years. But right inside the city, in the northwest, in the north and, especially, in South Philly. None of the spots is in Center City, which is down to a single brewpub (Second Story). Chalk that up to high rent, I guess. Instead, these new breweries are in the neighborhoods where people live, all reachable by bike or SEPTA. By next spring, we’ll see no fewer than 10 new breweries, including several brewpubs. Here’s a rundown:

A MEMORY TRIBUTE TO

Carlton Fox A South Philly Legend An awesome husband, father, pop pop, son, brother and friend to many. A man that had your best interest at heart. A man that poured positive into any youth he came in contact with. That affectionate smile that would light up a room. In this life, he touched so many, yet in his death so many lives were changed. The moment we met there was an instant bond and as we began to start our new journey in life. God was ready for you. Life has taken so much from me, but yet I’m grateful for the time God has allowed us in this lifetime In the end, I realized your wings were ready but my heart wasn’t.

Rest well my love until we meet again

ream often rush toward the drain, with feverish attempts to keep them from the dreaded location frequently leading people to realize they must settle for far less captivating careers and pursuits. Able to actualize his most fervent vision, Bill Werndl has spent more than five decades plying his trade as an esteemed media figure, with his recollection of amazing experiences and regard for the inspirational individuals behind them calling him to co-author “No Curveballs: My Greatest Sports Stories Never Told. “It’s something I think many people will be able to sink their teeth into, the 70-year-old scribe said of his brainchild with fellow sports media presence Joe Vallee. “It offers real insights about the business, the heart, and the soul of the athletic world, and I’m proud to put it out there, especially for those who can remember the times when that universe was more about the last two parts than it was the first element. The wordsmiths saw three-and-a-halfyears of hard work come to fruition Sept. 21. Werndl, thanks to a journey that started 50 years ago in the spring, is enlisting 29 chapters to reinforce not only his irresistible interest in performers’ feats but also the city’s charms in inspiring such devotion. “For all of the star players who have come through town, you’ll find a ton of journalists who are fortunate for the chances to have come across them, interact with them, and count them as friends, Werndl said. “There’s no mystery about what helps guys to get by when they put on a uniform for one of the Philly teams; it’s guts and determination. The opportunity to relay some tales from my time inside and outside of Philadelphia and how those interactions are unforgettable parts of my identity set my mind going. His active thought center, therefore, loved recalling the plentiful South Phillysituated contests teeming with legendary hires all with desires to work toward claiming championships and waving at parades. With Delaware County roots, he found

himself hopelessly devoted to wishing for the success of the City of Brotherly Love’s athletic upholders of pride and productivity. His book’s website notes the transformational rapport that he established with titans such as former Phillie Pete Rose, a huge component of the franchise’s 1980 run to the World Series title and Major League Baseball’s all-time hits leader; ex-Eagles coach Dick Vermeil; and the Broad Street Bullies clubs, whose courtesy toward him still seems as delicious to his soul as championship libations felt to their lips in their Stanley Cup-champion heyday. “The loss of that link between players and the reporters and broadcasters who want to publicize their gifts and reactions to wins and losses is unfortunate, he said in pondering how social media and the possibility of causing controversies have strained exchanges over the years. “I think guys from bygone periods had more engaging natures, and the book covers that and wonders where we’re headed as fans and chroniclers of athletes’ performances. “Having been at this for so long, I’ve seen the changes and pondered what motivates owners, athletes, and regular folks to be unable to refuse the allure of sports. I think I had some things to say about that complexity while also considering the simplicity. “‘No Curveballs’ is my tribute to what has kept me employed and content. WERNDL WANDERED INTO the wonderful world of sports as a Sharon Hill-reared youth, with an infatuation for statistics starting him on a path that has produced tales that could tame even the most undisciplined attention span. “I knew I didn’t want to have one of the go-to careers like a doctor or a lawyer, he said of other options’ inability to spur him. “I liked being around sports and knew that somehow, I could make my enthusiasm pay off. The prescient professional scored his first interview for WFIL Radio, the future WPVI/Channel 6, shortly after starting in its mailroom, engaging hoops legend Wilt Chamberlain when the Philly-bred center played for the 76ers. The next 30 years solidified him as a voice of reason,

even when his messages included a bit more honesty than one might have desired, including his assertion to Ron Jaworski that the Eagles should part ways with the struggling quarterback during the ’86 season. Twelve years earlier, Werndl had made history in becoming the first full-time sports producer in the coveted Philadelphia market. “There were so many great people who entered my life when I was first in Philly, the appreciative septuagenarian said of bonds that include an endearing friendship with South Philly Review columnist Tom Cardella, whom he credits for helping him to land co-host duties for WYSP’s Birds pre- and post-game shows. “By no means am I ready to hang it up, but I do love 0WZZ ES`\RZ aSZT ^cPZWaVSR bVS ! ^OUS ^O^S` looking back and giving POQY ZOab []\bV nods to everyone who has P h o t o p r o v i d e d b y B i l l We r n d l made a contribution to my success not only as a broadblessed to have great athletes with amazing caster but also as a man.
