am not a fan of self-help books. They bore, rather than inspire me. Yet, after 53-plus years of writing this column, I find this may be my first column to fall into the self-help category. The times that we are living in are very difficult, to be sure. Divisive times. Not the most divisive, at least not in my lifetime. The most difficult time to live in America for this columnist dates from the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated until the day Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency in disgrace. We survived those nightmare years and that alone should give us the hope that we will survive the crises of today. This column is all about coping in America 2017. You’ll pardon my wife for laughing at my posing as an expert on this subject because she’s seen me get in a dither when the 2 bus is late. Actually, the 2 bus is not a bad place to begin in learning how to cope. For those of you who never ride SEPTA, just imagine being caught in heavy traffic with horns beeping and bike riders zooming in and out (more about bike riders later). I cope with SEPTA stress by being overly courteous. This means ignoring the annoyance of the person seated behind you who is indulging in a loud conversation on his or her phone. It means that if a passenger steps on your foot, you smile and apologize even though you’re not the offending party. Smile a lot. “Smile though your See CARDELLA, page 13>>

hile the Philadelphia Eagles’ mission on the field is to win a Super Bowl, off the field its collective vision as an organization extends to the work and support it offers the community

and its citizens. Thus, the team is joining forces with the Mayor’s Office, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health to announce a new event, Eagles Autism Challenge, that will be taking place next spring. The first annual cycling and 5K run/walk fundraising event, which was announced at last

month’s press conference, will be held on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at Lincoln Financial Field, One Lincoln Financial Way. One-hundred percent of the participant proceeds from the Autism Challenge will go to supporting innovative autism research and programs at the three beneficiary institutions. The goal is that, with increased funding, See EAGLES, page 6>>

EAGLES: Team joining with local institutions to aid autism research

<<Continued from page 1 the region’s premier research institutions will be able to help drive scientific breakthroughs that will have an impact for generations. Jeffrey Lurie, chairman and CEO of the Philadelphia Eagles, was joined at the press conference by team president Don Smolenski, Christina Weiss Lurie, president of Eagles Charitable Foundation, Eagles Social Responsibility, Mayor Jim Kenney, Madeline Bell, president and CEO, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, John Fry, president of Drexel University, and Dr. Stephen Klasko, president and CEO of Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health. “It is very difficult for a single institution to address the complex medical and scientific issues presented by the condition of autism,” Jeffrey Lurie said. “So the partnership was organized to bring fresh ways of thinking and the necessary resources to the field. “I have such great respect and admiration for the amazing work that Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel and Thomas Jefferson are conducting today. ” This collaborative effort is increasingly important because each of these institutions has different areas of focus, and together their findings may lead to strength in numbers and impactful conclusions. For example, CHOP is watching how children learn, grow and develop to make connections and find personalized treatments for children and their families. “Teams at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia care for thousands of children on the autism spectrum each year,” Bell said. “These patients and their families need answers, solutions and treat-

‘It is very difficult for a single institution to address the complex medical and scientific issues presented by the condition of autism,’ said Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie during the announcement of the Eagles Autism Challenge set for May 19, 2018. ments that can only come from breakthroughs in research – and they are counting on us to make those breakthroughs. Fundraising events like the Eagles Autism Challenge give our teams the resources they need to make discoveries that will change our patients’ lives today and help them thrive in adulthood.” Scientists and doctors at Drexel University are focusing on prevention made accessible to the broadest possible population while Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health are working

with families to support children along the autism spectrum by providing resources, training to students to provide integrative care, and conducting research on some of the least understood manifestations of autism, including sensory differences. “Families need one team working toward the same goal, in the same fight,” Klasko said. “Jefferson Health’s experts are on the front lines of childhood-autism research, and now, with the Eagles leadership, we will push progress forward to make a difference in the lives of families of chil-

dren with autism. We’re proud to partner with the Eagles on this important and vital initiative that will meet our mission of improving lives.” Lurie noted that while researchers are working hard to understand the underlying causes of autism, the conditions themselves are still not clearly understood. While there is still much to learn about the disease, it is known that it impacts equally all socioeconomic, racial and ethnic groups, and has touched Lurie’s family personally. “You might assume that a widespread health issue of this magnitude would be met with large scale private and public funding, but that’s not the case,” Lurie said. “In fact, autism has been historically underfunded, under-researched and commonly misunderstood.” As Lurie also touched on it being extremely difficult for a single institution to address the complex medical and scientific issues presented by this condition, he stressed that it will take a collaborative, even global effort to accelerate the pace of recovery. However, by bringing together teams from Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Drexel University and Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health for the Eagles Autism Challenge, he believes this innovative coalition will be able to advance research and programs. “We chose to call this event a challenge quite purposefully,” Lurie said. “It is of course a physical challenge, and one that is fun and familyfriendly. It’s also a fundraising challenge and one that offers us all a chance to pull together for a cause that affects so many people, and finally it will be a challenge to unlock the puzzle of autism.” Each participant in the Eagles Autism ChalSee EAGLES, page 13>>

JFK Staubach and

F

ormer President John F. Kennedy was there. So was Hall-of-Fame quarterback Roger Staubach – before he suited up for the Dallas Cowboys. It happened nearly 55 years ago, Dec. 1, 1962 at Philadelphia’s Municipal Stadium, to be exact. Kennedy was sitting in the stands along with Attorney General Bobby Kennedy to watch the Army/Navy game. We are talking about the late fall ULYDOU\ WKDW GDWHV EDFN WR 7KH ¿ UVW 3KLOO\ JDPH taking place in 1899 at Franklin Field. In this particular year, Staubach and his Midshipmen defeated Army, 34-14. The quarterback passed for two touchdowns and rushed for two more. The venue name was changed to JFK Stadium in 1964, following the president’s assassination. This year’s game is being played at Lincoln Financial Field on Dec. 9. The Kennedy/Staubach story is just one of the great ones in this long-storied tradition.

Four days of fear Multiple city organizations, including Juntos, say latest ICE raid made to put immigrants ‘in their place’ By Sabrina Vourvoulias

L

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

ast week, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released information about the arrests of 498 undocumented persons as part of “Operation Safe City” – an initiative which ICE itself admits was meant to target so-called Sanctuary Cities, like Philadelphia. “ICE’s goal is to build cooperative, respectful relationships with our law enforcement partners to help prevent dangerous criminal aliens from being released back onto the streets. Non-cooperation policies severely undermine that effort at the expense of public safety,” said Tom Homan, acting director of ICE. In a nutshell, a Sanctuary City, like Philly, is where local law enforcement does not fulfill ICE’s request for a detainer or immigration hold unless there is a judicial warrant to back it up. During the four-day operation, 107 people were picked up in Philadelphia. Targeted communities, according to immigrant advocacy sources, were primarily communities of color, including the Indonesian community in South Philly, the Brazilian community in Northeast Philadelphia, and the Latino communities in both South and North Philadelphia. “It feels retaliatory,” Peter Pedemonti, executive director of the New Sanctuary Movement of Philadelphia, said. “Under Trump’s administration [the raids have] escalated, and our members feel that they are doing this to divide people. Since [Sanctuary City] protections were a victory won by immigrants of color, this is intended to ‘put them in their place.’” The South Philadelphia immigrant group Juntos, 600 Washington Ave., is even more blunt about the racial nature of the targeting. “Operation Safe City can only be described as a deliberate retaliation against cities and communities who refuse to cooperate with a racist, xenophobic and white supremacist administration in violating people’s rights,” read a statement released by the organization on Sept. 29. “Philadelphia felt the brunt of this retaliation by having the largest number of people disappeared in the country, with 107 people picked up in four days, more than any other ICE office in the country.” “Operation Safe City” is also a misnomer according to many of those who work with immigrants in Philadelphia and nationally. “Public safety is a local issue,” said Erika Almiron, the executive director of Juntos. Sanctuary City protections, she said, actually help reduce crime. Police chiefs around the nation agree with her. According to a March L.A. Times commentary by Chuck Wexler, the executive director of

WIKICOMMONS

Immigration officers, like those shown in this stock image, geared up in a raid throughout Philadelphia last week that, once the dust settled, led to the arrest and detainment of 498 people.

‘Members of the community feel like pawns in a political game ... It is creating a climate that is QRW UHÁHFWLYH RI WKH YDOXHV WKLV country was founded on.’ – Msgr. Hugh Shields, pastor at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish

the Police Executive Research Forum: “In reality, sanctuary cities are hardly sanctuaries for any criminals. Because of the trust and cooperation they have developed with undocumented immigrants, police in these cities are often able to identify, arrest and prosecute dangerous offenders who might otherwise still be on the streets victimizing residents.” “Let’s be clear. ICE has no interest in ‘safety,’” read the New Sanctuary Movement statement released late Friday. “ICE is trying to demoralize our communities and to normalize terror as the state of our lives.” Juntos’ statement, pointed questions of safety back at ICE: “Public safety is about all of us being safe from the hands of Trump’s criminalization machine,” it read, “and cannot be defined by ICE agents who knock down the doors of our homes

with guns and drag people out in front of their children.” “One local family reported that ICE raided their home wielding guns in front of several children, interrogating one of their daughters without parental consent and proceeded to fingerprint everyone in the household,” the statement alleged. “Some who were handcuffed and removed were described as ‘collateral damage,’ meaning they had no reason to be detained other than being immigrants and are the victims of an agency and political climate that terrorizes and tears apart families with Gestapo style tactics in the name of public safety.” Out of the 498 apprehended via Operation Safe City, ICE has identified 68 of them as “immigration fugitives” and 104 of them as “previously deported criminal aliens,” which – despite the sen-

sationalized phrasing – makes immigration their violation. Pedemonti spoke briefly to this reporter about one of the arrests that took place in the Indonesian community: “[The man] had an expired visa, that’s it, no interaction at all with the criminal justice system.” He was apprehended as he arrived at work, and was quickly transported up to York County Prison (where ICE detains those it arrests in the Philadelphia area). According to Msgr. Hugh Shields, the pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, 1719 Morris St., where most of the Indonesian community resides, the arrest has unsettled the community. “There are lots of rumors in the community that ICE is trying to fill quotas so that they’ll receive the budget they’ve requested,” he said. “Members of the community feel like pawns in a political game, and the bottom line is that people who are undocumented become [less and less secure]. It is creating a climate that is not reflective of the values this country was founded on.” Despite the alarm the raids have raised, New Sanctuary Movement Community Organizer Cynthia Oka expressed confidence in the Indonesian community’s ability to weather the difficulties. “The Indonesian people created a language to unite 300-plus tribes in the struggle against centuries of colonization,” she wrote in NSM’s statement. “We rebuilt a genuine, if imperfect, democracy from the ashes of decades of a military dictatorship. My people survived riots. Mass killings. Displacements. Disappearances. My people know how to survive.” Father José Luis Queimado, who ministers to the Brazilian community at St. Martin of Tours Parish in Philadelphia, confirmed that a member of that congregation had been arrested by ICE during Operation Safe City. “His name is Luciano and we are trying to get him out of the prison. He is a very good person and attends our community actively,” Queimado said. “We keep praying for our struggling people who suffer a lot from the anxiety of being hunted like animals,” he added. There are reports of another undocumented immigrant, a Latinx, who was also apprehended at his workplace, this time in North Philadelphia, but most of the Philadelphia raids so far are reported to have taken place at private homes. There are also reports from immigrant groups and grassroots advocates that home raids took place in King of Prussia on Sept. 27, and in Chester County during the four-day stretch of Operation Safe City. CARDELLA: Be nice, empathize <<Continued from page 1 heart is aching. Smile even though it’s breaking, in fact. Note: your heart may not be aching, but your feet most certainly are. As you depart the bus, tell the bus driver to “have a nice day. He or she may even respond by wishing that you also “have a nice day. Both of you know the odds are long on that possibility, but just saying those words to one another makes both of you feel better about your chances. The other morning as I left the Reading Terminal, I practiced my ultra-courtesy policy to good effect. I held the door open for seven people – an African-American woman and half a dozen police officers. The woman smiled at me as I smiled back. The police officers, every one of them, thanked me and called me “sir. A small gesture, but imagine if that gesture spread between the police and the community. I warned you this isn’t easy. Smiling a lot is not enough. Neither is being overly courteous. Dear cynic, you suspected as much. What next, you think? Drawing smiley faces on all the napkins in your local diner? No. The next step in the Cardella Coping Manual is tougher than that. It’s called empathy. You must try walking a mile (maybe even a mile and a half) in the other person’s shoes. I know that some of you have trouble walking a mile and a half in your own shoes, but seriously, listen up. Take our current national debate over protests by professional athletes during the singing or playing of the national anthem. My wife’s Facebook page is exploding with outrage by good Americans who don’t want the flag disrespected. I understand your outrage. You love what our flag stands for. You see, that’s my example of empathizing with you. Here’s the good news that might help you

empathize with the protesting athletes. They’re not protesting against the flag, despite what our president tweets. Note: My coping mechanisms require that you avoid reading the president’s tweets. Whether you agree with the method of the protesters or not, their intent is to protest those instances when rogue cops shoot unarmed citizens, almost all of whom are African-Americans. It happens too often. And too often, the rogue cops are not punished for what amounts to an execution. Before you get angry, hear me out. Not all cops are rogue cops. My father was a cop and he definitely was not a rogue cop. I, too, support my local police, but not those police who act as judge and jury. Empathy requires us to realize that Lady Justice in this country does not always wear a blindfold. Sometimes she checks out the color of your skin first. As a white person whose father was a cop, I tend to see cops as protectors. But in a place where race can determine who gets stopped, just walking down a street or driving a car, an African-American person likely sees cops somewhat differently. Recognizing that fact doesn’t mean you have to agree with kneeling during the national anthem. But it helps you tolerate those who do. And when you’re tolerant, you are more than halfway to coping with the situation. That brings me closer to home. Here in Philly, drivers and bike riders have become openly hostile to one another. Me? I’m just a pedestrian who feels threatened by both groups. The City could reduce the tension between the two groups simply by enforcing traffic laws equitably. Many bike riders already obey the law, but alas, some do not. They cut in and out of traffic. They fly through stop signs. When drivers do the same, they are ticketed. Ticket rogue bicyclists. Reduce the cause of hostility between the two parties. Help the rest of us cope.

AUTISM: Institutions rally for cure <<Continued from page 6 lenge will be responsible for a registration fee as well as a fundraising minimum. The registration fee for all three cycling routes is $150, while the 5K run/walk is $50. Virtual participants can sign up for $25. By registering for the Eagles Autism Challenge, members will receive access to the Friday Kick-Off Party and Saturday’s Finish Line Celebration at Lincoln Financial Field, free food and beverage for both days, a cycling jersey or 5K T-shirt, honorary medal (riders and runners/walkers only) and more. Participants must be 13 or older for the 15-mile and 18 or older for the 30- and 50-mile rides. Children 12 and under may participate in the 5K free of charge under the supervision of a registered adult.

Lurie recognized unlocking the puzzle of autism will not happen overnight, he hopes that as the community comes together to make this challenge a reality year after year, that it will truly be advancing autism research together. “Our entire Philadelphia Eagles organization is supporting the Autism Challenge, Lurie said. Fry and the team at Drexel University are, too. “Finding ways for people on the autism spectrum to pursue fulfilling lives is vitally important work to this community, and I’m deeply grateful that the Eagles Autism Challenge will help us continue our efforts, Fry said. Sixers hungry to rebuild rivalries History, like the Sixers-Celtics games of past decades, was one of the many hot topics at media day By Al Thompson

N

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

ow that the Sixers have a real chance to be a relevant team this year, It’s time to talk about getting back some of the traditions that have made the 76ers one of the most storied teams in the NBA. Let’s start with the Sixers-Boston Celtics rivalry. From Wilt Chamberlain vs. Bill Russell, to Julius Erving, Mo Cheeks, Bobby Jones, Andrew “The Boston Stranglerâ€? Toney and Charles Barkley against Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parrish, there was nothing quite like it, for many years, in the NBA. During the Allen Iverson era, most of Boston’s great players were gone except Paul Pierce, but he was never the villain Sixers fans gravitated to during the previous eras. But the Celtics now have a great villain in former Cleveland Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving and possibly with their 2017 first round pick, forward Jayson Tatum out of Duke. But Irving, who helped the Cavs with the NBA title in 2016, will do for now. On Aug. 22, Irving was traded by Cleveland to the Celtics in exFKDQJH IRU ,VDLDK 7KRPDV -DH &URZGHU $QWH äLĂĽLĂź DQG WKH ULJKWV WR the Brooklyn Nets’ 2018 first-round draft pick. At Sixers Media Day, third-year guard T.J. McConnell was asked if it was time to bring it back. “Yeah absolutely,â€? McConnell said. I think over the past couple years we’ve started to rekindle it a little bit, finally getting over the hump, beating them I think one time last year. The games are always tough and with the pieces we’ve added this year, it’s a no-brainer that this rivalry will come full circle. With the pieces they added, I know both fan bases are extremely excited and so are the players.â€? Second year forward Dario Saric, a native of Croatia, who was taken with the 12th overall pick in in the 2014 draft, was finally able to join the Sixers last year after buying out his contract with the Turkish pro team Anadolu Efes. Saric was asked about the Sixers-Celtics rivalry at Media Day, and his knowledge of the history of his team was impressive. “Of course I know about 76ers history,â€? Saric, who averaged 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game last year, said. “I know that was one of the biggest rivalry games was 76ers-Boston. Also Boston against the Lakers, Lakers against the 76ers.â€? Saric, who also represents the Croatian national team, believes the rivalry will return ‌ eventually. “It is hard to say if we’ll have the rivalry immediately, right now, from the first game,â€? Saric said. “But I know in the future, this team

Tell us your news. We’ll tell everyone else.

MARK PSORAS

Dario Saric showed he has done his homework on the history of the Sixers. On Media Day he was well aware of the ‘Big Three’ NBA teams from the late 70’s throughout the mid 80’s: Sixers, Celtics, Lakers. can be really good. You know how it is in sports, before it was the rivalry between 76ers and Boston. Right now, these last couple of years, the rivalry game is between Golden State and Cleveland. That (rivalry) is changing with history. I can see the 76ers for sure, with our rivalries, because we are young, it will be very good, especially with Boston. McConnell talked about the new vibe on the team now that there are real pieces in place for Sixers fans to have legitimate expectations for successful season. “When you add veterans like Amir (Johnson) and J.J. (Redick)

and the experience we have with the other players, it helps, McConnell said. “Not we, but a lot of people are throwing around that this year there’s expectations, so that makes it fun to know that people are coming in expecting us to play well and if we stay healthy, the sky is the limit. Given all the new faces, especially at his position, McConnell was asked how his minutes would be affected. “Honestly I think that’s up to coach [Brett] Brown and his staff, said McConnell, who “I’m gonna work my butt off every day to make sure I’m on the court. But I’ve said it a million times, if I play two minutes and we win, that’s ultimately all that matters. That’s the mindset I’m going to have. After going undrafted in the 2015 NBA Draft, McConnell joined the Sixers for the 2015 NBA Summer League. On Sept. 27, 2015, he signed with the 76ers. He played well during preseason, averaging 6.2 points and 4.8 assists in five games which impressed Brown enough to earn him a spot on the 76ers’ opening night roster. Every year has been the same for McConnell, he has had to earn his minutes. This year, with the roster upgrades, it will be even more challenging for the 25-year-old. “I’m not going to look at it as one (season) being more important than the others, McConnell, who was awarded the “Charles Barkley Award last year by Sixers beat writers for being cooperative and respectful with the media, said. “I’m going to fight for my life, fight for my minutes like I have each training camp. That’s never going to change...in year three or year 10 if I’m playing that long. My mindset is not going to change. This offseason, the Sixers selected guard Markelle Fultz out of Washington with the No. 1 overall pick. In 2016, the Sixers selected guard Ben Simmons out of LSU with the No. 1 overall pick. Simmons did not play his rookie season because of injury. Also guard Jerryd Bayless was a free agent acquisition last year and he missed the entire season last year also due to injury. Those are players who were not here at all last season. They will no doubt be getting a lot of the minutes on the court that McConnell got last year. The former Arizona standout talked about the challenge. “It’s kind of all another battle to me, McConnell said. “Obviously, the two No. 1 picks, they’re here for a reason. I don’t want to look at it as...we’re battling. I’m here to help them. Whatever they need from me, I’ll be happy to answer. I’m going to push them as hard as they’ve ever been pushed. I think it will be good for them. And good for the Sixers. Follow Al Thompson on Twitter @thompsoniii

EAGLES INSIDER

T

Eagles fans take over the StubHub Center

he reputation nationally labels Philadelphia sports fans – particularly those who follow the Eagles – as bullies who are so terrible that they boo Santa Claus, for goodness sakes. The narrative, then, is not complimentary in any way. Basically, the rest of the world thinks we’re nasty and classless. And the rest of the world is wrong. What Eagles fans are, as they demonstrated again on Sunday when the team played at the Los Angeles Chargers at StubHub Center, is incredibly loyal, passionate and hungry for this football team to win a Super Bowl. Eagles fans dominated the 25,374 in attendance at the StubHub Center with chants of E-A-G-L-E-S, EAGLES! and LET’S GO EAGLES throughout the game, overwhelming the shrinking Chargers fan base and turning Philadelphia’s third road game in four weeks into a cozy, home-feel affair. “It’s incredible how the fans sup-

port this team on the road,” tight end Zach Ertz said after the 26-24 Eagles win. “Usually, you’re on the road and it’s a hostile environment and for an offense, you have to prepare for the noise. The silent count comes into play because you just can’t hear the quarterback when you’re lined up wide. “But these fans are always with us on the road. In Washington, the place

was packed with Eagles fans. We could hear them from the minute we ran onto the field. In Kansas City, it wasn’t quite as prominent and you have to give a nod to the Chiefs fans who don’t give up their tickets. Here, the place was swarming with Eagles fans.” Boo Santa Claus? If you know the story, the guy (the late Frank Olivo, a

19-year-old kid in 1968) understood that the fans were booing a 2-11 team that was absolutely miserable. The boos were not directed at Santa Claus. They were directed at a terrible team. But that doesn’t stop the national media from running with the story. The facts, though, say something different about Eagles fans.

WORLD-CLASS PROGRAMS.

The facts say that Eagles fans are going to be there, through the good times and the bad times. Not every football team can say that of their fans. “They follow them as well on the road as they do at home. It’s a religion for these fans,” said Craig “Quimby” Chenosky, who is in his 15th season of running the fan travel group Green Legion, which averages 400 to 500 fans for each Eagles road game. “They have an incredible passion for this football team. Sunday is a religious day, and the Eagles are these fans’ religion. It’s a different kind of fan base and it’s awesome.” The Eagles agree. The players appreciate it. They see it, they feel it, they hear it and they love it. “You know you’re going to get the fans’ best every single game and you have to be prepared to give them your best,” defensive end Brandon Graham said. “I know that I love it. The fans, they fire me up. They’re so into it that they get me even more excited.”

Holy Spirit, You who make me see everything and who shows me the way to reach my ideals, You who give me the divine gift to forgive and forget the wrong that is done to me and You, who are in all the instances of my life with me, I, in this short dialogue want to thank you for everything and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. AMEN. Thank You for your love towards me and my loved ones. Pray this prayer three consecutive days straight without asking for your wish. After the third day your wish will be granted. Promise to publish your dialogue as soon as your favor has been granted.
