atching the Philadelphia Theater Company production of “Rizzo last week at the Suzanne Roberts Theater was more than an exercise in nostalgia. The force Tom Cardella of Frank Rizzo not only shaped the politics of South Philadelphia forevermore, but in many ways casts a large shadow over the 2016 presidential race. Whether you believe the former mayor’s impact has been for good, evil, or somewhere in between (the play’s conclusion) is up to you, dear reader, but you cannot deny that impact. This columnist’s own life intersected with that of Frank Rizzo at several dif-

n making major life decisions, Zoe Richards loves marching to her own beat, trusting that much-pondered choices will make matters cheerier than unsolicited suggestions ever could. Especially desiring autonomy in her profession, the actress has sought parts that promote passionate immersion into a text and compassionate camaraderie with peers. Through Sunday, she will enjoy both blessings as The Selector in “How We Got On, the season opener for Azuka Theatre. “She’s just such a fun character to embody, the 23-year-old said of the disc jockey who serves as “kind of the narrator in the tale of three suburban teenagers who want to become hip-hop heroes. “The whole storytelling component really resonates with me because there’s something about the pleasure of guiding people that’s powerful

The East Passyunk Crossing dweller and her contemporaries are handling the Idris Goodwin script through The Louis Bluver Theatre at The Drake. Thrilled to help Azuka to further its affinity for “telling the stories of outcasts and underdogs, Richards considers “How We Got On a perfect outlet for fostering positivity, particularly because of the cast’s racial makeup. “It’s a show about black people that’s not sad and depressing, she said of the 1988-set work helmed by renowned director Raelle Myrick-Hodges. “There are no drugs and no gangs. It’s just about exploring hope and self-belief, and I’m loving every minute of it. She and the likewise young hires, in portraying vibrant late 20th-century figures, are, according to Richards, “giving a voice to a section of the black community that hasn’t had any light shone on it. That opportunity has proven potent for her, with The Selector as a refreshing reflection of who she is on stage and off. “It’s just so rewarding to be open to these interactions and to enjoy the space that we’re in, literally and figuratively, Richards said. “I play multiple characters in the show, but the Selector is so endearing to me. She’s galvanizing and hopeful, and I think that’s absolutely intoxicating. To prepare for the role, the thespian found herself in disc jockey classes and had opportunities to work with vinyl, which she dubbed “very much a process. Much like she received instruction in a disci-

C\Wbg 1c^ 1SZSP`ObSa a]QQS` O\R RWdS`aWbg To the Editor: In virtually every country around the globe, outside of the United States, football – or soccer, as we more commonly know it – is the dominant sport. It’s known far and wide as the “beautiful game and for good reason. Soccer is a sport of constant motion and athletic grace. Soccer’s popularity in the U.S. is growing exponentially. Youth soccer leagues are everywhere. Major League Soccer and our own Philadelphia Union have become very popular in a relatively short period of time. International leagues such as England’s Premier League, Germany’s Bundeglisa, Spain’s La Liga and Italy’s Serie A are staples of live television sports programming and draw significant viewership.

Here in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, we very fittingly have the inaugural Unity Cup, an international competition modeled after the World Cup that pairs teams of immigrants from 32 nations at various sites across the city. The Unity Cup competition began on Sept. 10, and a champion will be crowned on Nov. 5 in the first soccer match ever to be played at Citizens Bank Park. Soccer fans have Mayor Jim Kenney to thank for the Unity Cup, the genesis of which was the mayor’s desire to showcase our city’s diverse immigrant population and celebrate the beautiful game across the city. I applaud Mayor Kenney for making the Unity Cup a reality. As a former, half-decent soccer player myself (before injuries and advancing years ended

my playing days), I know firsthand how soccer can both enthrall spectators and bond teammates together. The Unity Cup features the added bonus of showcasing the diversity of our citizenry, while celebrating our shared status as Philadelphia citizens. The mayor stated it best when he said, “When you bring people together around one commonality, it’s the foundation for an important cultural exchange and understanding that increases tolerance across the city. Heaven knows we need to be more tolerant of our fellow citizens. The format of the Unity Cup is similar to the World Cup. Eight group-stage matches, which will be played on weekends, were set when Mayor Kenney randomly selected ping-pong balls at the opening ceremony. The groups are: A: Ivory Coast, Honduras, Germany, Cambodia B: Congo, Indonesia, Lithuania, Argentina C: Liberia, Spain, Colombia, Myanmar D: Nigeria, Italy, Jamaica, South Korea E: Senegal, Poland, Mexico, Vietnam F: Sierra Leone, Turkey, India, Puerto Rico G: Cape Verde, Ireland, USA, Haiti H: Sudan, Ukraine, Bhutan, Guatemala Think about that line-up for a moment. A total of 32 countries are being represented in our first Unity Cup, and that’s only a fraction of the countries and world cultures that comprise the population of this big, beautiful city of Philadelphia. The countries listed are each represented by a single team, with each guaranteed to play at least three matches in tournament play. All teams must play all three of their

scheduled matches and any succeeding finals matches. To keep on top of match scores and upcoming Unity Cup match schedules, visit unitycup.phila.gov. Odds are good that you’ll find your family’s country of origin in the field. If not, come out anyway and root on your fellow Philadelphians. Al Taubenberger Councilman-at-Large

@Sbc`\W\U b] bVS bS[^ZS To the Editor: The admonition by Jesus that his flock build temples (responding to “Knocking on Cardella’s door, Sept. 29) should have been attributed to one of the Mormon guides. I would never presume to be a biblical expert. Regarding whether religious institutions should pay taxes, I think it’s a debatable point that could be tested in the courts. Churches on both the left and the right have strayed into political issues that are worthy of debate as to whether they are covered under the First Amendment. The recent closings of parish churches are irrelevant to the argument, in my opinion. Some of the problem has to do with the financial strain placed on them by lawsuits incurred as a result of what many of us think was a blatant attempt at covering up crimes of sexual abuse. Tom Cardella South Philadelphia Comment on these letters or topics at southphillyreview.com/opinion/letters.

“He’s one of the most visible athletes in our city. I think he represents what our athletes should be. He’s a champion and conducted himself like a professional.

“We’re going to miss him. He played the game the way that it’s supposed to be played. He played with so much heart and with dignity.

“He was the man who powered that team. It always baffled me how much hate he received. He was such a productive hitter, but people become hung up on strikeouts. I wish him well.

n Monday, the Philadelphia Police Department announced the arrest of Alberto Lopez, who turned himself to the Central Detectives Division over his supposed involvement in a June 11 matter outside Geno’s Steaks, 1219 S. Ninth St. In the incident, surveillance footage captured five men assaulting three complainants at 4:15 a.m., with the suspects fleeing in a dark pickup truck and an SUV, both bearing a New Jersey license plate. On the same day Lopez surrendered, authorities issued a warrant for the arrest of Luis Nieves. The former posted bail and will have a preliminary hearing Oct. 27. Call Central Detective Division at 215686-3093 with DC#16-03-033203, text PPDTIP (773847), or visit phillypolice. com/forms.

@Sa]`bSR b] abOPPW\U An at-large male stabbed another man in Lower Moyamensing. At 5:46 p.m. Oct. 1, authorities ventured to 900 Oregon Ave. for a radio call report of a stabbing, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. They learned the complainant had become engaged in a verbal altercation with a man following his accidental contact with the unknown figure. The offender resorted to stabbing him with an unknown object, inflicting wounds in his victim’s arms, legs and chest. The injured figure walked to the 2600 block of South Darien Street and collapsed from his injuries, treatment for which he received at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He described the attacker as white and 20 to 26 years old; having a thin build and a beard; and wearing a white T-shirt and Khaki pants. Call South Detective Division at 215686-3013, text PPDTIP (773847), or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

6Wb O\R `c\ O``Sab Authorities detained a man for supposedly causing a fatal hit and run nearly 10 months ago. Law enforcement officials announced the Sept. 28 arrest of Christopher Cook (left), with their investigation and an anonymous tip leading them to believe that the 43-year-old is responsible for the Dec. 23, 2015 death of Theresa M. Pozzi, who resided in Bella Vista, on State Road. Authorities charged Cook with an accident involving death, homicide by vehicle, and involuntary manslaughter. He had not posted his $1 million bail as of press time and awaits an Oct. 19 preliminary hearing.

^V]\Sa W\ O RcTĂ€ S POU Authorities are after the depicted suspects (below) for their roles in a commercial robbery in Pennsport. At 1:20 p.m. Sept. 13, an employee for Cricket Wireless, 1100 S. Columbus Blvd., heard the entrance bell and, looking at the camera system, observed an unknown black female and a black male walking past the front c o u n t e r. The woman opened a large duffle bag and swept 12 phones valued at $3,000 off the shelf. The worker followed them out of the store, leading the female suspect to state “Yo, she crazy; pop her one.â€? The accomplice produced a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the employee, who stated they fled in an unknown direction. Call South Detective Division Det. Richardson at 215-686-3013 with DC#16-03051910, text PPDTIP (773847), or visit phillypolice.com/forms. SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com. GRACE continued from page 1

THE SOUTH CAROLINA native has always felt ardent about art, with its inherent ability to give everyone a say initially proving irresistible to the “awkward kid. Fond of experimenting, she gravitated toward modern art, loving how it could test the boundaries of expression. “It’s where I’ve always felt the most comfortable, she said of inhabiting space in the

ever-evolving art world. “Just being able to ponder a concept and to make something of it are really such joyful practices. Giving children that extra push when they’re so young really does it for me, too. Grace studied art education at Georgia State University and began her educational career as a high school instructor. An elementary stint in Delaware preceded a lengthy stay at Friends’ Central School, during which she obtained her master’s degree at Saint Joseph’s University. A North Philly opportunity followed, and then Nebinger came along, with her hiring three years ago becoming the inciter of the happiest segment of her life. “I certainly feel more connected with them than I have with any other group of students, Grace, whose duties find her holding the Expressive Arts Lead title and encouraging kindergarten, second, third, fifth, and seventh graders at this junction of the year, said. “Especially with the younger set, I find myself being goofy with them and discussing with them how much fun this all can be and should be. Operating with a firm belief in growth mindset, which mindsetonline.com states is an aid in helping people to “believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the starting point, she has made classroom sessions constant affirmations of unity, a theme that she noted often comes through in her learners’ work. “They want that connection to the world around them, she beamed. “They are realizing their importance more and more each day, and I believe they’re going to be great contributors to whatever fields

they choose and are going to make their neighborhoods proud. Grace finds herself particularly enthused about their overall growth, serving as Nebinger’s community liaison under Principal Anh Brown. As the news of her award spreads and as her venture to the Moore College of Art & Design looms, the educator knows she will never succumb to hubris now that she has a state honor to her name. In fact, she intends to keep commending others for their part in her joyful journey and will undoubtedly continue to try to captivate the Nebinger youngsters, which, based on her impending Art Museum-area trip and the respect that the learners and their parents hold for her, should result in a masterpiece. “I love what we’re doing each day to fill our students with confidence and additional belief in their abilities, Grace said. “I can’t imagine myself being anywhere else, and I don’t intend to start doing so either. There are so many positives going on inside each classroom that I can’t help but feel really fortunate to say I teach at Nebinger. SPR Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com. through a late morning gathering at the Moore College of Art & Design. As part of the association’s annual conference, the occasion will find her eager not to collect kudos but rather insights on how to grow as a motivator. “I’m never still in my learning, Grace said of her curiosity. “I’m constantly in pursuit of ways to improve because our children need to know that continually seeking the best from themselves can really open doors. The humble honoree learned of the prize in late July and needed to put a cap on the news until last week. The Nebinger family has proven a great source of support as everyone has begun a new year, with the victor eager to continue to draw attention to her pupils’ potential. “People need to express themselves, and the possibilities for that expression can be so compelling, Grace, whose awareness of her discipline’s importance has helped her to raise more than $20,000 through crowdfunding over the last three years to cover supply costs, said. “I have great rapport with my students, and that’s what drives me. An accolade is definitely nice, but when I wake each day, I’m thinking about what kinds of connections we can establish and foster. A peer within the Philadelphia Art Teachers Alliance nominated the eventual winner, with the local needing to acquire two letters of recommendation. Not one to tout herself, Grace said accepting compliments has been an exercise in brevity, as she has replied to them without much elaboration. “This could sound funny because I’m the one who won, but what makes me happiest is knowing that a teacher from the School District (of Philadelphia) is receiving the recognition, Grace said. “We always hear that it can be tough to connect with learners in the city, but I think of it as such a rewarding practice. Every child has so much to say, so I’m fortunate to help the Nebinger students to do well because they want that encouragement.

CARDELLA continued from page 1 ferent levels. Like Rizzo, my father was all cop. A law and order cop. He started on the police force around the same time as Rizzo. Like Rizzo, he was a high school dropout from South Philadelphia. Rizzo’s unique identification with South Philadelphia was largely shaped by his persona and his police and political career. Unlike my father, who lived here all his life, Rizzo left South Philadelphia at an early age. My father became a personal friend of Rizzo. They stayed friends throughout my dad’s life. Both Rizzo and my father were almost obsessive over their spit and polish appearance. Dad’s police pistol had pearl handles. He spent hours at the kitchen table polishing his weapon. While Rizzo became known as The Cisco Kid, my father’s nickname was Pistol Pete. Even detractors of Frank Rizzo will admit his courage. My father earned 35 commendations for bravery as a cop. When Rizzo ran for mayor, I was a young columnist at the South Philadelphia Review. While South Philadelphia fell in love with Rizzo, I was critical. The owner of this newspaper at that time, Leon Levin, told me that local merchants were threatening to pull their ads. I can’t afford to run anti-Rizzo columns, he told me, so you can write them, but I won’t print them. You could’ve more easily slammed the Pope in these parts than Frank Rizzo. And yet, the Rizzo campaign advised me that it was sending one of my columns about him to the nationally syndicated Washington columnist Joseph Alsop for background. Rizzo had become a national figure. My father told me one day that Rizzo didn’t understand how the son of a good cop could write such negative stuff about him. In response, Dad told me that he shrugged his shoulders and told Rizzo in so many words that I was his son with a mind of his own. An actor named Scott Greer does as good a job as possible playing Rizzo, but no actor can radiate the former mayor’s magnetism and menace. Many of Rizzo’s most infamous statements were greeted by laughter from the theater audience the night my wife and I saw the play. It was as if they were watching reruns of ALL IN THE FAMILY and Frank Rizzo was merely Archie Bunker. But I can guarantee you that when Rizzo actually said such things as “I’ll make Attila the Hun look like a faggot, no one was laughing. I can still remember one night when my wife and I attended a Rizzo fundraiser in

N a ] c b V ^ V W Z Z g ` Sd W Se Q ] [

South Philadelphia as guests of this newspaper. Prior to the dinner, Rizzo was in the lobby of the catering hall surrounded by media. “Smile for us, Frank, one of the reporters shouted. Rizzo, who had just beaten liberal Councilman and antagonist David Cohen for the nomination, gave the reporter a stare that Wyatt Earp must’ve flashed at the OK Corral. “Say David Cohen, he hissed. And then he smiled. The PTC production is taken from a book by Sal Paolantonio, “Rizzo: The Last Big Man in Big City America. Paolantonio is well known to football fans for his work on ESPN, but he was also a political reporter for the Philadelphia Inquirer and covered Rizzo’s last political campaign. When this columnist served as the host of the pre and postgame shows on the Eagles radio network, I got to know and like Sal. I interviewed him many times on my sports show. Paolantonio’s book about Rizzo came about when the former mayor defeated Ron Castille for the Republican nomination in 1991. Rizzo died before the general election and Democrat Ed Rendell became mayor. I interviewed Paolantonio about his book on my public affairs show on then WYSP-FM and disagreed with his conclusion that Rizzo could well have become mayor again (he barely edged Castille to win the GOP nomination and would’ve needed an African-American to enter the general election to siphon off votes from Rendell in order to win. Paolantonio thinks that was going to happen. I thought it was a fanciful delusion on the part of Rizzo’s political supporters. Controversy still surrounds Rizzo. His detractors want to remove his statue across from City Hall. His rough style in going after his opponents (Rizzo is reputed to have spied on Castille and others) is emulated by Donald Trump. I think it no accident that Trump’s appeal in South Philadelphia lays rooted in its continuing love affair with Frank Rizzo. Just a couple of week before Rizzo’s death, my wife and saw him in Center City. She smiled at him and Rizzo smiled back. “I knew someone you knew, she said to the former mayor. “And who was that, Rizzo replied. “Pete Cardella, she said. “Pistol Pete, Rizzo replied with a smile. “Helluva cop. Helluva cop. SPR (Tom Cardella can be seen along with Paul Jolovitz on MONDAY NIGHT KICKOFF Mondays from 6 to 7 PM video streaming at wbcb1490.com) Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ cardella.

n making major life decisions, Zoe Richards loves marching to her own beat, trusting that much-pondered choices will make matters cheerier than unsolicited suggestions ever could. “The whole storytelling component really resonates with me because there’s something about the pleasure of guiding people that’s powerful

and transformational. Much like she received instruction in a disci-

pline, she hopes her turn in the Philadelphia premiere will be a source of positive spins for those who are looking to scratch goals off their lists one dream at a time. “It takes courage to want to be someone with aspirations, Richards said, giving a nod to the expertise with which her trio of castmates executes the action and expecting big things from the young performers soon. “For me, that means aiming to do really good work that I’m passionate about. Azuka is all about making that a reality for anyone with similar thinking, so I’m very blessed for ‘How We Got On’ and my time among such great and creative people. THE DAUGHTER OF Guyanese immigrants grew up in Jersey City with ample encouragement to determine the course that her life might take. Dancing and singing won immediate favor, but Richards, knowing she would forever be irrepressibly drawn to the arts, did not deem either the ultimate supplier of comfort or conviction. Through the New Jersey Orators, Richards soon found her niche, particularly thanks to competitions in which she emerged victorious. With an initial plan to attend Pepperdine Univer-

sity as a broadcast journalism major, she decided that giving life to plots could offer far more enjoyment than relaying news could. “I just felt that my thing had to be something more engaging and engrossing, the performer said, noting that a high school performance of a Sept. 11 work, through which her character offered a monologue detailing the harrowing process of trying to contact a missing loved one, enabled her to know the proper path to pursue. Craving a conservatory program as her next stop, she chose The University of the Arts, a destination that furthered her enthusiasm for independence and awareness. “I function based on what I feel will make me happy, she said of becoming a Philadelphia resident. “I couldn’t live my life otherwise, and it’s there that I began to understand the reality of making this a career. Great material, amazing connections among educators and learners, and her burgeoning enthusiasm helped the Center City stint to be a delightful experience. Junior year proved pivotal, as she used the first semester to study performance and creation, dance, and devised theater at Headlong

eather can be a wonderful inspiration in helping us to determine our meals. Now that the last quarter of the year has arrived, thoughts will often turn to warm goodies that will remind cold temperatures that they can have their fun outside while we enjoy benevolent delights on the inside. Roe Maglio has a wonderful idea that will soothe your soul without taking too much time through her Quick Chicken Soup. The Point Breeze resident has begun to become a consistent crafter of recipes for this publication, and this one, which serves four to six people, should prove as tempting and satisfying as the others. Though autumn has just begun, one can easily foresee needing to reach for this brainchild as we start the countdown to dealing with 2017’s frigid digits.

said of the six-pepper creation that he loved to serve to guests at the now-defunct Mama Ventura’s in Voorhees. “I think everyone loves something spicy, so this has been something reliable for me and them. As Toll Man Joe’s enters its first full month of business, Bermudez and his bosses are looking forward to fetching more compliments for the fare and the friendly atmosphere, as container rooms will soon make a trip to their brainchild a more fulfilling experience. “Outside, inside, wherever you choose to eat, I’ll be looking to make you happy, Bermudez said. “That’s just who I am as a chef. INGREDIENTS: $ 7bOZWO\ Z]\U V]b ^S^^S`a ]T O eVWbS ]\W]\ bOPZSa^]]\ ]T UO`ZWQ Qc^ ]T QVWQYS\ P`]bV $ aZWQSa ]T ^`]d]Z]\S $ aZWQSa ]T []hhO`SZZO $ aZWQSa ]T ^`]aQWcbb]

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Cut a long slit from top to bottom down the center of each pepper to form a pocket. Stuff the prosciutto and cheese slices into the slit of each pepper. Arrange the peppers on a baking sheet topped with the sliced onion, garlic, butter and broth. Drizzle olive oil over the peppers, and season with half-teaspoons of salt and pepper. Roast until the peppers have become tender, roughly 15 to 17 minutes. SPR

o matter the location, be it his native Costa Rica; Canada, where he obtained formal training; or the East Coast, where numerous spots have thrived through his culinary expertise, Arturo Bermudez always aims to prove the belief that he was “born to be creative. With an insatiable urge to sate diners, the 37-year-old is entering his second month as the head chef at Toll Man Joe’s, 26 E. Oregon Ave. “I often find myself wanting more, the promising preparer said from the Whitman location that bears the name of 2000 Wing Bowl victor Joe Paul, a turnpike toll booth worker and a relative of some of the site’s overseers. “I know how rewarding it can be to have a great meal, so I want to bring that joy to everyone who comes here. Blessed with a lifelong interest in food, Bermudez benefited from residing in an Italian culture-heavy section in his homeland. That immersion and the feeling that he could contribute to the culinary world led him to further his tenacity in Toronto, where a diverse pool of peers prompted aspirations whose growth has made him a happy hire for many owners, including the handful of proprietors who helm Toll Man Joe’s. “I really enjoy the atmosphere here, the New Jersey dweller said of making the short commute from Collingswood. “I think it’s a great location for me to be as imaginative as I want. That dedication comes through in Toll Man Joe’s housemade options, which account for around 97 percent of the selection. With room for more than 200 patrons, the Whitmanbased dining destination has certainly found a winner in Bermudez, whose emphasis on offering a comprehensive menu has already made the spot a hit. In choosing a recipe to win readers’ regard, he opted for an old favorite, Stuffed Italian Long Hots. “There have been great responses so far, he

his daughter, Annette, feasted on a complementary hamburger. “I’m from the old school because I believe that we need to modify our own behavior and shouldn’t rely on people to be saviors, but every bit of help helps, so I’ll be eager to enroll her in the program mainly because I think she can be a role model for other kids, the ones who feel hopeless. The resident of the 3200 block of Dickinson Street and his nine-year-old descendant, who would join more than 200 children as a registrant, delighted in hearing all of the speakers, with state Rep. Jordan Harris drawing their most robust applause. “Please use this PAL center, Harris, who represents the 186th District, said of the destination that unofficially opened last month and that has joined its predecessors in offering sports, including basketball, soccer, and tennis; educational opportunities, such as chess, homework and computer clubs, and mentoring programs; and field trips. “This location, and I cannot stress this enough, is going to be responsible for saving lives.

HARRIS ADDED THAT a space that could prove a boon for the troubled area had always come up in meetings with residents. That desire for diligent means to inspire dreams met the ears of then-councilman and mayoral candidate Kenney last year when he attended a barbecue at Stinger Square Playground. “This is definitely a promise that needed keeping, he said of having vowed to assist locals. “This is a huge step in helping our children because we want for you to reach your potential. We love and care about you so much. “This is a long time coming, 2nd District Councilman Kenyatta Johnson said to cheers, taking time to commend community leaders, including South Philly Review Difference Makers Ella Best and Anton Moore, of Don’t Shoot...I Want a Future Call 215-291-9000, or visit phillypal. and Unity in the Community, respectively, org/join-us/enroll. for bringing the plan to fruition. “The time is now to make a lasting difference in the Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ lives of our children. southphillyreview.com. or far too long, “Abandon hope, all ye who enter here, which Dante Alighieri used in “The Divine Comedy as the inscription for the gates of hell, has seemed an applicable warning to those residing in and venturing to Grays Ferry. Crime, addiction, and poverty have often threatened to throw the proud neighborhood into perpetual upheaval, especially with respect to the lives of its children. On Friday, though, hopeful helpers looked to counter the conundrums by opening the Grays Ferry PAL Center at 3225 Reed St. “Our children need guidance and role models, Mayor Jim Kenney said at the evening ceremony that marked the space as the 18th Police Athletic League location in the city. “A place like this will give them those and will make us all feel better as people and protectors of their future. With more than 100 children gathered before them, the South Philly product and peers promoted the benefits of the partnership between the Police Athletic League and the Salvation Army Greater Philadelphia. Already the overseer of the Grays Ferry Outreach Center within the building, the latter organization loves making the downtrodden turf a place when one should come to discard fear instead of hope. “We saw the potential here and thought everything was ideal to have a presence in the community, Maj. Phillip Ferreira, the Greater Philadelphia Director of Operations of the outreach center said of strengthening a stretch of South Philly that needs ample outlets for youths to feel focused and ambitious. “The end result is what I hope is going to be a model location. The opening of the impressive space, including the gymnasium where dignitaries and community members fraternized, signals the end of PAL’s two-year absence from the neighborhood and gives Grays Ferry trustworthy allies in reducing regrets and remorse. “It’s a shame that some people just don’t care anymore about themselves or others, Bernard Hall said just before the ceremony as

ter decisions and to establish stronger relationships with contemporaries, family members, and educators, the site, which is open from 3 to 9 p.m. on weekdays, will call upon Frank Holmes to be a beacon for their maturation. “I’m happy to be back in this area, the Philadelphia Police Department officer said in offering reflections on his time as a patrol officer in the 17th District. “There’s a lot of work to be done, but I know these children want to make something of themselves, and we all want that for them, too. More than 18,000 youngsters participated in PAL programs last year, so the new spot’s leadership team is eager to swell that total and finds itself thankful for children like Raymir Richburg. “I feel more disciplined because of my time here, the 10-year-old resident of the 3100 block of Moore Street said, noting how basketball and flag football have honed his athletic identity and how homework club has fostered his academic curiosity. “It’s cool to have people who want to help us all the time. The student at the James Alcorn School comes to the Grays Ferry PAL as a part of a group, proving a perfect poster child for the claim that there is strength in numbers. Regardless of whether he continues to come with company or whether any other local boy or girl makes individual or group stops, Ferreira knows their time at the destination will always serve as an appealing alternative to the appalling choices that problems in the home, spats with their friends or enemies, or sadness over the direction of their lives could lead them to make. “This is to be a haven, he said, noting that adults can partake in the center’s offerings through congregation meetings and Bible study options. “We are striving to let kids know that when they need help, they will always be able to find it here. SPR
